Book Talk

Harry_potter_2

Last evening, while Vann and Sophie conducted their regular neighborhood visits, I finished Jodi Picoult's My Sister's Keeper. After crying uncontrollably for 45 minutes, I picked up my brand new copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and began to read. Didn't get much read, though. My eyes were burning and puffy from the crying. Talk about a surprise ending--a horribly sad surprise ending! But My Sister's Keeper is an excellent book, if you can endure the sadness. Picoult is a wonderful storyteller and writer. I'm just hoping that J.K. Rowlling doesn't kill off Harry or one of the other characters that I love. I can't stand any more crying right now. (And if you've already read the book, don't tell me.)

My only complaint about JK Rowling is that I wish she'd had more about Ron's twin bros. that have the magic shop- that was FUN to read about. Made you feel like a kid, again. And more about trips to that
village with the strange shops where the kids bought their school supplies.

I am going to check out the book, My Sisters Keeper today at the library if they have it in. I've been collecting stuff for my fairy cottage and plan on working on it this week - end. Have a great day. Nita

Hearts, Hands, and Happy Hugs

Hugs
This is my spread for the "H Book" in the current Northwind Studio Altered Book Round Robin. Each participant chose a letter for her book. Mine is S. I totally thought I had lost the "B Book." I knew I had received it, but didn't remember working in it or mailing it on to the next person. I tore my office and my sewing room apart looking for it with no luck. I was in a panic, trying to think what I could do for the B Book's owner to make up for losing it. Just on the off chance that I had sent it on to the next person and didn't remember, I e-mailed Karen, and she says that yes, she has it. I sent it to her with the "M Book." Well, I still think I never worked in it and it just got in the package by mistake. Either that, or I have pre-alzheimer. Who knows?

There are times I think I might have alzheimer too...but I can't remember what the symptoms are!
Susan
PS I won't breathe a work about Harry Potter! Three of the four of us are done reading....and we're all being very, very good about not telling the last one!

On 08/02/2007, mom2fur said ...

Well, first, the spread is lovely. If you can do something like that, there's nothing wrong with your brain.
Second, forgetting you did something isn't pre-Alzheimer's. I walk into rooms a gazillion times each day, stop dead in my tracks and ask the famous question: why did I walk in here? There are days I ask myself, "did I take stupid pills this morning?"
If you forgot how to do your crafts, or write an e-mail, or brush your teeth...then you'd have to worry.
Meantime, most of us are losing it these days. You are in good company!

Fifth Sunday Feast

Cake
Every fifth Sunday, our church holds a fellowship potluck luncheon. Today being fifth Sunday, we're looking forward to a great lunch, since Leeds First United Methodist ladies are known as great cooks.

Last night, I made this Peach Jello Bundt Cake to take. I also made Crock Pot Pork Roast (still in the pot), and this morning I put a dish of French Onion Brown Rice in the oven. I think I can smell it cooking.

Oh, and look what I found at America's Thrift Store in Centerpoint on Thursday. Three great Christmas plates to begin my collection. Christmas_plates I've planned to do this for a long time--collect plates in various designs to set my Christmas dinner table. Very Martha Stewart, you know.

Reed Speaks My Name!

Reed
My grandnephew (great nephew??) called me on the telephone this morning. I answered the phone and there was nothing for a little while. Then I heard all this babbling. Somehow, I knew it was Reed even though I couldn't understand a word he was saying. Then in the background I heard India (my niece, Reed's aunt) say, "Say hi to Aunt Suzie." Then Reed said "Hi Aunt Suzie. Bye." and hung up. I was so tickled that I ran to the living room shouting, "Reed said, 'Hi, Aunt Suzie'!" Vann said, "I know; I was listening." I was tickled pink, and so was Vann.

It reminded me of the times, years and years ago, when Buffy (Reed's mom) used to call me from Centerville (long distance) when she was about Reed's age, maybe a year older. Her mom (Ramey) finally asked her how she knew how to dial my number. "India taught me," said Buffy. So now India's teaching a new generation of toddlers to be phone savvy. At least I'm not long-distance any more.

Oh, No! It's the Big Blank-O!

Pats_senior_portrait_2
My beautiful sister Ramey is celebrating a birthday today (at least, I hope she's celebrating). Out of kindness and good manners (and because I don't want my head bashed in), I won't say which birthday she's celebrating. Let's just say, she's still beautiful (although he hair isn't quite as big as it was in 1965). And no matter how old she gets, she's still my baby sister. Have a great day, Trois. I'm baking you a cake.

Ripple Isn't Just a Fine Wine

Crochet
I've started a new ripple afghan. This one is for the beach condo. I tried to find yarn that would match the colors in the sofa. What do you think? Will it work? I think I probably need one more yellow, a darker buttery yellow.

Hi!
I think your color selection is perfect. It really doesn't need more yellow in my opinion...the sofa has enough. Your afghan will look lovely without more yellow...sort of "set off" from it! Just my opinion...a non-knitter!

A Well-Dog Visit

Cat_scan
DR. RACHEL, with with the help of her new medical assistant Snuggles, performs the all important cat scan on Sophie. Since Soph endured the procedure with quietness and dignity (and a dirty look or two), Dr. Rachel said there would be no charge for the cat scan. (Thank goodness! I hear those things are expensive.) She promised to call us with results as soon as Snuggles has his nap.

BUT SERIOUSLY, we're off the Prednisone. Soph took her last dose today. Dr. Rachel decided against her annual shots for now. She doesn't want to do anything that would trigger another immune system problem. The only negative about the visit was when Soph stepped on the scales--23.9 pounds, a gain of about 2 pounds. She hated the scales. I know how she feels.

We are so happy that our girl is her old self again

There's a Little Bit of Martha in All of Us

Crepe_myrtle

I have been thinking lately that I'm more of a Martha than a Mary (Luke 10:38-41). I haven't been able to do anything--read, sew, etc.--as long as there's a chore to be done. I can't stand an unmade bed or a sink full of dirty dishes. If the laundry basket is full, I must empty it. But it has come to me that I'm missing a lot of life, trying to make sure the bed is made, the socks are clean, and the towels are folded. So I've vowed to change. Yesterday, I let the bed go unmade until almost bedtime--then it seemed pointless to make it, so I just straightened the sheets and covers. As I write, there are several dirty dishes in my sink and the laundry basket is overflowing. So far, the the housekeeping police have not arrived to arrest me. I think that's a good sign. As they say in 12-Step Programs, I'm taking it one day at a time.

I love synchronicity (what some people call coincidence, but I don't believe in coincidence). I honestly and truly have been thinking a lot on the Martha and Mary story lately, and trying to not get too caught up in making sure all the "chores" are done before I can enjoy Life. Then, lo and behold, this morning our minister's sermon was based on the Martha and Mary story from Luke. According to Deepak Chopra, this is important. He says that sychronicity (or coincidence, if you prefer) is God's way of guiding us. So I think maybe, for once, I'm moving in the right direction. Well, I hope so.

Clare has tagged me to answer some revealing questions. So here goes:

1. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? My paternal grandmother. Her name was Susan Alvetta. Mine is Susan Elaine. The Elaine was daddy's cousin's idea.

3. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? Sometimes. Sometimes not. It changes.

5. DO YOU HAVE KIDS? 2 children, 2 stepchildren, 1 grandson, and a dog

9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP? Hell no!

10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL? Oatmeal in winter; Cheerios or Total in summer.

11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF? This is a silly questions.

12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG? What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, they say. Just call me Popeye.

15. RED OR PINK? Pink, PINK, PINK!!!!! Oh, I love pink.

17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST? My babies. They're grown-ups now.

22. IF YOU WERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE? Burnt Sienna, only because I think that would be a beautiful name. But I'd have on pink panties.

23. FAVORITE SMELLS? Coffee is no. 1. Turkey and dressing cooking on Thanksgiving morning. A real Christmas tree. Peaches. Lavendar. Avon Skin So Soft. Fresh cut grass. Honeysuckle.

27. HAIR COLOR? Well it depends on what kind of mood my hairdresser is in. We try to stay in the neighborhood of dark blonde.

28. EYE COLOUR? Blue.

30. FAVORITE FOOD? If I have to pick just one, it would be coconut pie.

31. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS? Scary movies with happy endings.

32. LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED? The Godfather (last night)

34. SUMMER OR WINTER? Winter (but my favorite is Fall)

35. HUGS OR KISSES? Hugs. My family didn't hug, so I was severly hug-deprived as a child. I've tried to make up for it in my adulthood.

39. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU READING NOW? My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. (Good book!)

42. FAVORITE SOUND? Music, especially The Eagles, Journey, and Vince Gill.

43. ROLLING STONES OR BEATLES? Rolling Stones

44. WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME? About 3000 miles.

45. DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT? I used to be able to predict the winners of sporting events--especially baseball. But then one October, my dearest uncle lost a ton of money betting of the team I said would win the World Series. I've never tried to predict winners again. (I stress that I was NOT involved in the betting, nor did I encourage my uncle to do so. I just told him who I thought was going to win.)

46. WHERE WERE YOU BORN? The Jefferson-Hillman Hospital (currently UAB) in Birmingham, Alabama

47. WHAT SUPERPOWER WOULD YOU LIKE? I'd like to be able to make it rain.

Now wasn't that interesting? If you are reading this and have a blog, consider yourself tagged. --Susan

This Martha is having a difficult time learning to rest and take it easy. I think God is telling me I need to learn more Mary like behavior. I like the comment about Teilhard de Chardin. I've long thought that his theology made so much sense and helped me understand how faith and science can work hand in hand instead of being adversaries.

I'm sure not a Martha--lots of unfinished chores in my life! But I've always hesitated to think about myself as a Mary, since she was so spiritual. There should be a third category, don't you think?

Autumn Splendor in July

Front

Back_tag

In honor of the rare July cold front that is making its way through Alabama this weekend (which means the high today is 90 instead of 95), I worked on Sherry's page for her "Autumn Splendor" fabric journal. (Top photo: front of page; bottom photo; back of page and tag). This was fun, and it really put me in the mood for the real autumn, my favorite time of year. I live for October.

Before & After

Before
BEFORE

After
AFTER!

When Sophie was just a wee pup, we discovered that she was precognitive. No, Really! She always knows Vann's coming home at least 30 minutes before he gets here. And she never fails to wake up weird on bath day. And if she even sees a piece of luggage, she'll stick that our legs like glue.

Yesterday was grooming day for Soph. And she knew it! That dog acted strangly all day, even trying to hide under the bed at one point when Vann called her. She wasn't a bit surprised when Diane showed up with her traveling grooming studio at 5:00 p.m. Sophie tried her best to make herself invisible, but it didn't work.

Anyway, here are the results. Doesn't our girl look beautiful. She had become very, very shaggy as a result of Diane's and our vacations running back to back. Sophie was several weeks overdue for a haircut.

Vann looks cute too, doesn't he? I just love my those two! When they rode off on the 4-wheeler, Diane called them "two peas in a pod." I think she was right.
******************************************************************************************

ON A MORE PAINFUL NOTE
I have been having trouble with my right foot, as I mentioned last week. The condition severely hampered my beach walks. By the time the week was over, I was hobbling big time. So as soon as I got home, I made an appointment with the orthopedist. I saw him yesterday; he diagnosed plantar fasciitis and started me on therapy. The therapist was very positive that I would see dramatic improvement with the treatment and therapy (cordinsone cream applied with ultrasound wand, ice packs, and exercises). But he also told me to toss the Crocs. MY FAVORITE SHOES OF ALL TIME! I have to go to a more supportive shoe with arch support inserts. What a crock!

How funny that you would make that post. Riley goes in next Wed (2 weeks past due) for his grooming. He looks like a little sheep dog and I have been thinking about doing before and after shots.

Oh Suzie, I don't envy you PF! I had it a couple of years ago and it is the most painful thing. If you go to a podiatrist, he may fit you with orthotics, which you could wear in your Crocs. He can also tape up your foot to help ease the pain. Meanwhile, rolling your foot over a frozen bottle of H20 helps. Man, I've been there. It's no picnic.

Does Sophie walk around like a queen after being groomed? Yes Sophie and Vann are cute.

I have heard it said, over time we start looking like our pets. Hum? I wonder which one of my three dogs I am going to look like.

Our dog Belle who has passed on, knew 1/2 hour before hubby came home too.

Now all three of the dogs around 8:50pm sit and stare at hubby because they know walk time is 9pm.

What a pretty girl your pup is! And look at that stylin' bandana!
(Your husband ain't too bad, either.)

Ouch...your foot sounds painful! But I have to tell you, I think Crocs are ugly as sin. Sorry, I just do! Still...couldn't you find some kind of supports that fit inside of them?

PF—been there, and it's no fun. My doctor recommended Dansko closed-back clogs (no open-back shoes) or New Balance walking shoes (good arch support). They helped. Also the cold-bottle-of-water trick, and stretching before I got out of bed—point with the heel, not the toe. And never, ever go barefoot. (which was the hardest thing for me) Mostly it was just a matter of being patient while things got better. Good luck!

Soph and Vann both look extra-cute! I think animals just naturally know more, or learn more, than we think they do. Every time I set my alarm clock, Mo wakes me up 15 to 30 minutes before it goes off.

Regarding your "review" of Darwin, Divinity and the Dance of the Cosmos: I agree that science and the Bible don't conflict. I read The Phenomenon of Man by Teilhard de Chardin a long time ago, and that old priest or monk or whatever he was, said that God made it all and set it in motion, and planned evolution as well as the rest of it. I've always believed that. Whoever wrote the books of the Bible wrote in language that they understood, and that a lot of people misinterpret, but it's all true. And science just finds out parts of the Plan in bits and pieces.

I'm so sorry to hear about the PF. I had it once and it was about the worst pain I've ever had. They put Cortisone and some painkiller into it with an elephant needle. What a relief, I could walk! Your guys are adorable; lucky you!

New Use for Pizza Cutter

Tip
Since I was planning to work on Lacey and Jared's baby quilt at the beach, I packed a sewing kit full of all the necessary tools and materials. I had everything right at hand to cut out the pieces--rotary cutter, rulers, mat. I had brought my treasured Singer Featherweight, extra needles, thread, etc. I was sure I was well prepared.

To construct the flying geese for the border, I was using the method where you start with a rectangle and sew a square to each side to make the goose. (See Speed Piecing Method A.) No cutting triangles or sewing bias edges this way. But before I start sewing the geese units, I like to lightly mark each square's diagonal so that my stitching line will be straight. But I had forgotten to pack any kind of a marking utensil. Didn't even have a pencil. (I did have a pen, but didn't want to use it on my fabric.) I found a couple of pencil stubs on the bar at the condo, but the points were dull and there was no pencil sharpener.

While scrambling through kitchen drawers for something to mark with, I came upon this pizza cutter. And suddenly, I just knew it would work. Now I'm probably not the first person who has ever marked fabric using a pizza cutter, but I've never seen it done, so for me it's a new technique. Here's how to do it: Lay your ruler across the square diagonally, corner to corner. Run the pizza cutter along the edge or the ruler, using it just as if it were a rotary cutter and you were cutting the squares into triangles. Except the pizza cutter isn't sharp enough to cut the fabric like the rotary cutter does. It simply marks a crease where you have rolled it. Voila! A perfect stitching line. (I was able to mark two squares at a time, laying them on top of each other with all edges matching.)

I finished the top. As soon as I find it, I'll post a photo. Then I'm taking it to Lena at New Traditions to have it quilted.

You are brilliant. That is a fabulous idea to mark your diagonal line with a pizza cutter. I am always leaving pen smears on my ruler and this way I wouldn't have any of that mess.

Last Day of Sand, Seagulls, and Serenity

We've decided to cut our vacation short by one day and return home tomorrow. Missing Sophie has won out over quiet days with no phone, no chores, and lots of reading and sewing. So this is our last day to enjoy the peace and quiet of the beach.

Last night, we had dinner at Carabbas. We both had chicken marsala with garlic mashed potatoes and salad and a nice glass of chianti. No dessert, since we were stuffed when we finished the main course.

I finished Between, Georgia and began reading Beth Moore's new book Get Out of That Pit. I have only to sew on the remaining borders, and the baby quilt will be done. Late this afternoon, I'll start straightening up the condo and getting ready to pack up in the morning. It has been a great vacation, but it will be nice to get home and see Miss Soph.

Downed by Mini-Tsunami

The water looked calm this morning, no big waves, whitecaps, or violent breakers. So we decided to go shelling. By the time we got down to the water, the waves had kicked up just a wee bit and the shore breakers did require a pretty good foothold to keep our balance. But we were doing all right keeping our footing and harvesting some pretty neat shells. All of a sudden, Vann was down, rolling around in the water. Before I could get a good guffaw out, I was caught by the same wave and sent rolling too. Needless to say, we were both a bit embarrassed, although nobody really seemed to be paying us any attention. But we came back to the condo, took showers, and had waffles and peaches for breakfast.

Last night, we had steamed shrimp from Buddy's Seafood Market. Yum Yum! I boiled the Silver King corn that we got at Durbin Farms in Clanton on the way down. We both agreed it went well with the shrimp.

Wish Sophie were here.

Donuts to Die For

We're getting up very early here at the beach. You'd think we'd take the opportunity to sleep late, but something gets us out bed shortly after sunrise each morning.

This morning, after coffee on the balcony, we went to Thomas's for donuts. I know I shouldn't have, but who can resist those wonderful sour cream donuts? Not me?

We got back to the condo at about 8:00, and I finished sewing the flying geese blocks for the baby quilt. Now all I have to do is assemble all the blocks and borders, and the top will be finished.

I'm about 3/4 finished with the Joshilyn Jackson book. I've accomplished more in the two days I've been at the beach than I would get done in a month at home--at least with sewing and reading.

Vann says we could download photos if I like, but I'm still thinking I'll wait until I get home and do a photo story of the entire trip.

Something has been very wrong with my right foot since I've been here; walking has been painful and difficult. But this morning, the foot feels better, so maybe I'll get some more beach walking done this afternoon.

Oh boy! Do we miss our Sophie dog!

Friday 13th, Beach Style

Yesterday, I got all the pieces for Lacey and Jared's baby quilt cut out. I also read half of Between, Georgia by Joshilyn Jackson. I found a copy of it here, and since I liked Gods in Alabama, I decided to read it instead of one of the books I brought. We sampled the gazpacho for lunch and it was wonderful. A little spicy, but we like spicy. I made spaghetti and meat balls for dinner. You can see we're eating well.

This morning, after a walk on the beach and peaches and cereal for breakfast, we went to Panama City (the city) for a visit to Quilting By the Bay. It's a great little quilt shop, and I always visit when we come to the beach. I spent some bucks, of course. Got some cute patterns and pretty fabric. Pictures will be included in the photostory that I'll post when we get home.

Going to make lunch (tuna salad and fresh tomatoes), then some reading and sewing this afternoon.

First Full Day at Beach

We're here! It's so good to be back at the PC condo. Kim has added a few more decorative touches since last summer. It's fun to look around and pick out the new stuff.

We ate at Somebody's Crab Shack last night. Bill's maybe? Something like that. Anyway, I had the blackened grouper, and wow! it was great. Best grouper I ever ate. Vann had shrimp and crab cakes. He said it was great too.

This morning after breakfast (fresh peaches, and the last of the zucchini bread), I made gaspacho. First time I've ever made it. I forgot to bring my vegetable chopper from home and had to chop by hand, so it took forever. It's in the fridge now, marrying its flavors. It's looks beautiful. I'm not going to post photos from the beach because downloading them here is a lot of trouble and slow. I'll do a photo story when I get home.

OK. I'm going to the shower now. Then I'm going to cut out the pieces for Lacy and Jared's baby's quilt.

We miss Sophie.

Pretty in Pink

Img038

Isn't this the prettiest room? I found this magazine at the drugstore today when I stopped in for some prescription refills. Pink is my favorite color. It's the softest, most comforting, comfortable color to me. If pink had a taste, it would be sweet. I could live in a room like this. I've always wanted to do my bedroom in pinks and roses. But Vann would have kittens if I did such a thing. He thinks pink is fufu, too fancy, tacky. He'd like nothing better than to decorate our room in Realtree camo and hang a moose head over the bed, I suppose. But that's ok. He can no more help liking what he likes (neutral) than I can help liking what I like (lots of colors, especially pink). That's why our bedroom is done in offwhite and a sort of mossy green. A little bit neutral, a little bit color. (Well, I do have some pink-trimmed pillow cases and a small pink striped throw pillow. Does that mean I should let Vann hang a small animal head in our room?)

We're leaving tomorrow for our annual week at Panama City Beach, Fla. The condo is right on the beach. It belongs to a friend of ours who lets us use it every year. We are so blessed to have good friends. And not just to get a free condo for a week, but because we gain strength from our friends. Friendship is one of God's great blessings. We definitely count our friends at the top of our list of treasures.

We're both taking a ton of books because we love to read. I'm taking a sewing project, a jigsaw puzzle, and some crochet. And we'll probably take a stack of movies. You'd think we were staying a year instead of a week. I'll bring most of the stuff home unsewn, unworked, unwatched, uncrocheted, and/or unread--but I have to take it all because I never know what I might want to do. Our friend Stuart also told me how to find really great shells, so I'll be doing some shell-seeking too.

We'll return on the 18th. I will probably be checking in on the blog from time to time. Vann's taking his laptop. Sophie is staying with Paul & Karen, neighbors across the street. We'd love to take her with us, but PC Beach has a ban against dogs on the beach. I don't understand it, but that's the way it is. And Sophie loves the beach so much and can see it from the condo's glass doors. It's just cruel to take her and make her stay off the beach.

Have a good week, everyone.

Zucchini Bread

Bread
Zucchini is one of those things that comes under the heading of "Things I Don't Like to Eat." It's a small category, I admit, which also includes calamari, suschi, and beets. So when our neighbor, Paul, gave us some zucchini, I thought I'd probably leave them in the refrigerator until they were too old to eat and then throw them out. But I remembered that I once tasted zucchini bread and liked it, so I decided to make some. I made four loaves. We cut one for lunch today (it was scrumptious). I'm sending one to Paul and Karen and two more to friends.
Here's the recipe I used. Very, very simple.

2 eggs
1 cup cooking oil
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
2 cups grated zucchini (about 2 zucchinis)
2 Tbsp. vanilla
3 cups all purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 heaping tsp. cinnamon

1. Beat eggs. Add oil, sugars, zucchini, and vanilla. Mix lightly.
2. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon. Add flour mixture a little at a time to the wet ingredients, mixing just until moistened.
3. Pour batter into 2 medium-sized loaf pans that have been sprayed with cooking spray (or you can grease and flour them).
4. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 50-55 minutes (until toothpick inserted in center of loaf comes out clean).

WOW! Look at Us!

Wows
This is some of the women's Bible study group of which I'm a member. We're known as WOW (Women of Worship).
Vann shot this photo after church yesterday. Don't we look snazzy in our hot pink and lime green t-shirts. Sandra B. ordered them for us, and we decided to wear them to church. Bynum E. gave a testimony about the group. She told about Joan's impromptu performance of "Amazing Grace" at the restaurant in Orange Beach. Some of us teared up, as usual.
I love these women. And I love the bond that has formed among us. It makes us all stronger. Love always does that, doesn't it?

Umm, I still don't think He minded.

7-7-7 at My House

House_block_2
Well, this won't happen again for a thousand years, and I probably won't be here then. So I'm going to wish you much good luck on this rare day, July 7, 2007 or 07-07-07 or 777! All those sevens can't be wrong.

The good luck has already shown up here at Blackberry Creek. We've had rain, a steady light rain, since yesterday afternoon. I don't know if it's enough to break the drought, but we sure are thankful for it.

I found the little house quilt block in my sewing room a while ago. "Now where did this come from?" I asked me. And then I remembered: It was one of my guild's blocks of the month some time back. I always make them, but most of the time I forget to take them with me when I go to guild, so I just put them in my orphan block box.

Again, good luck to all today.

Remember a couple years back when this woman discovered the Virgin Mary in her piece of toast and offered it for auction on Ebay? Well look here! Now you can have your own holy toast every morning. I saw this thing first on Anita's blog, then I found it online for sale. I don't know if you'll make much money on Ebay with your slices of toast, and I'm not even sure I'd be able to bite into one of them (seeing as how it's the Blessed Mother), but there you are. Do with the information what you will.

Hi!
It's late at night. I've been surfing the blogs...waiting for my sixteen year old to arrive home...he's here...finally. But, I found your post right before he put the key into the lock. So, is this some Southern thing? I scanned Anita's blog for a quick hint but didn't see if she, too, was fighting the heat and humidity...and the everlasting strangeness of "the South".

Unlike the other poster, I do find this sort of thing totally amusing. Maybe that's because I am Catholic living among the Baptists of South Carolina and watching the Neo-Nazi's parade up our Main Street every year and watching weekly television news about troops headed to war while knowing our educational system is #49 in the country but we lead in infant mortality...Life is strange...the "South" isn't like anyplace else on Earth...or...maybe it's because my family and I would actually use this sort of toaster thing...just for the fun of it.

Like your pork shoulder...butt...loin...whatever post. Hilarious! Really enjoyed it! Where, exactly can we buy the Virgina Toast Template?

here, in the "Bible Belt" (Okla, TX, Ks, etc.), was brought up a Baptist, my husb. and his family are all Catholic from up north (Dubuque, IA, 90% Catholic)

Yea, the "Nazi/Aryan" group tried to parade
in downtown Tulsa 1-2 yrs ago and either the city denied 'em a permit or they did and hardly any "public" showed up. People
here are fairly tolerant of everyone, EXCEPT child predators. When one is arrested, they literally show up @ the local courthouse with nooses. People wear
cowboy hats, cowboy boots and some "chew"
(tobacco). UGH- I can't stand that!!

When I think about it, the "Pope" Garden Gnome isn't that bad-maybe "he" is watching over peoples gardens-?

What I think is hilarious is that Okla is
celebrating our 100th yr of statehood this
Nov. There are signs on the highways, info everywhere, tshirts printed up. Oh, it's a BIG DEAL, here. I chuckle "100 yrs-
that's not any "history" at all, compared to some of the states back east, and even
less compared to UK, Germany, etc." I have a good friend coming next wk from UK
to visit- I can just see her going home and saying "I was THERE-they're 100 yrs old!!!!" Not likely.

I'd like to see Charleston someday, and Getttysburg. I've been to Chickamauga, very "incredible" the sense of history that falls over you in such places-

What a Feast!

BbqEveryone agreed that Vann's smoked pig shoulder/butt was some fine stuff. Combined with Marla's potato salad and homemade Italian bread, my baked beans, Paul C's home-grown tomatoes, and Mary Beth's sweet tea, it was enough to make us comatose for most of the afternoon. Oh, and we topped it off with slices of Marla's homemade pound cake with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. It was one of the best BBQ feasts I've ever experienced.

As you see, Sophie and Daisy got in on the feasting too. Sophie says there's nothing like PopPop's BBQ pig--shoulder, butt, or left hind foot.Bbq_dogs

Sweet Land of Liberty

Flag
I was, like, nine or ten years old before I knew that the reason we eat barbecue and shoot off fireworks on July 4 was NOT because it was my daddy's birthday. And even though I'm aware now that the holiday is for rejoicing because we live in the best country on earth, still enjoying many freedoms (for now) as well as beautiful landscapes and wonderful people, July 4 remains for me, first and foremost, the anniversary of the birth of my daddy, Gordy Ramey.Dadd_2
Daddy left us to meet Jesus on January 15, 1977, more than 30 years ago now. We all still miss him, but we know he's been enjoying great peace and happiness (at least until Mama got there in January of 2005). Happy Birthday, Daddy. Your earthly body would be 96 today. So it's just as well that you left it behind. Tell Mama hey. I hope she isn't giving you too hard a time.
******************************************************************************************
Vann is cooking that much discussed butt/shoulder today. We've got friends (another blessing) coming over to share it this afternoon. We're also having baked beans, potato salad, homemade bread, pound cake, strawberries, and sweet tea. I'll take pictures.

Happy Birthday, America. Happy 4th, everyone. On this anniversary of Freedom and the birth of my daddy, I wish freedom for all and peace for our world.

Summer Treasures

Peaches_2

I've never been a fan of summer. I hate (HATE!) hot weather and high humidity. I hate not being able to wear my soft sweat shirts and snuggling up on the couch with a good book and a warm blanket. I hate trying to take a walk with sweat pouring in my eyes. I hate the high electricity bills that the heat and humidity necessitate. And firecrackers???? I hate firecrackers. And rattlesnakes and ticks and fleas and mosquitoes. Give me autumn any day--or even winter or spring. Just deliver me from July and August!

But there are a few things about summer that I love. And today, I choose to dwell on the good things. Here's a list of the Top Ten Things I Like About Summer.

10. Fresh veggies from the farmer's market
9. Barbeque
8. Blackberry picking
7. Flowers blooming
6. Summer thunderstorms
5. Picnics
4. Trips to the beach
3. Watermelons
2. Lightning Bugs

And the top, NO. 1 thing I like about summer: CHILTON COUNTY PEACHES!

Um, there's not much about summer I like at
all, except airconditioning. And out here,
we are ALL waiting for the "Hotter Than You-Know-Where" weather we KNOW is going to
hit when all the rain is over. It has rained EVERY day in the genl Tulsa area, since 6/9, and we are all SICK of it. But
what's coming will be worse. Hot, Hot, Hot.

I've been thinking about October for several weeks now. . . .

I'm glad you don't like fireworks, either.
They scare the cats, and I'm just tired of
'em, in general. we aren't doing them at
all this yr (always have, because John is
a kid, afterall), but we don't know what
the reaction would be "here". In Tulsa county, which we are barely in, it's only
"legal" to shoot them off YOURSELF in a
county park. But for that one nite, most
neighborhoods don't "say anything" if residents shoot em off. Unless you have
wooden shingles on your roof.

But there's other things I'd rather do, now, in life.

Your peaches look so yummy!...and I'm not much of a peacher. I'm with you when it comes to heat, I'm not much of a summer person at all...I love the fall & winter where I can where my jeans a sweaters and use my oven baking all kinds of goodies. Have a great 4th. Toni

I just finished dinner, but those peaches are making me hungry!
I hate extremes of weather myself. Winter is the season I hate. At least in the summer, you don't have to be afraid of falling on your patootie when you walk outside. But my favorite season is, and always be, fall! I love 'sweater weather'!

Those are some mighty good looking peaches!!

So -- the butt is really the shoulder? Why do they call it a butt then.

I don't like the summer heat either but I don't live somewhere that the heat gets too bad and we usually have a nice ocean breeze in the evening to cool things down. But I do love BBQ's and watermelon :))

Anatomy of a Pig

Porkcuts_2

So it seems that I've been cooking and eating cuts of pork all these these years without knowing what part of the pig I was dealing with. Emeril told Rian and Rian told me that a pork butt is really a pork shoulder. WHO KNEW?!?!? I googled "pork cuts," as I was having a hard time with this strange fact. And guess what? It's true. Not only is what's call a butt really the pig's shoulder, what's called his leg is really his butt. And stranger still: the loins are on his back. Bet he has a hard time breeding.

Hi!
My husband Steve and I have just rolled off our dining room chairs with laughter. (Okay, we've got one of the kid's laptops on the table!) I read your earlier post to Steve just the other day. He does all the grocery shopping and cooking, and he thought he knew EVERYTHING about the entire meat department at Publix...but, this latest post proves...once and for all...that neither of us could have spotted a pig's snout from his curly hind tail! Hilarious.

By the way, thinking of summer in South Carolina and elsewhere in the South has always brought to mind the first bead of sweat at the beach...which is shed somewhere long before arrival at said oceanfront location...I've always felt that this sensation is some insect running down my leg...then I start to itch...then I start to panic. I have no idea how people can stand sun tanning or lounging on a towel plopped down in the sand. Give me a cool evening with a blanket and a book anytime! Better yet, put me inside an air conditioned house with classical music and a needle pulling a thread through some exotic fabric! Have a great Fourth of July. I'll be in my nice, solitary studio...creating art.
Susan

It's Sumertime, Summertime, Sumsumsummertime!

Guild_display

I hope everyone is having a safe and happy holiday week. Vann is going to smoke a pork shoulder (he gave up cigarettes years ago) on Wednesday.

Funny story (I think): When we were shopping for the roast to cook, we found a hunk of pork with a lable that read "pork shoulder butt roast." Now I don't know a lot about meat cuts, but isn't something wrong with that? Can you have a shoulder/butt combination in a roast. I guess maybe it was a very short pig.

I've been working on the Church Directory this weekend, mostly typing the membership roster, which has to be put in the proper form for the printer. I love typing, but not lists and tables that have lots of numbers--which is what this is. It's slow going, and I'd rather be in the sewing room. I'm lagging behind on lots of project. I haven't finished even one of the quilted church banners, and Thanksgiving (my deadline) will be here before I know it. I'm looking forward to a Red Rooster Quilting Retreat in August, so I can get a lot done then. Nothing to do but sew, visit, and enjoy the wonderful Red Rooster cuisine.

I wonder if Hell is any hotter than Alabama in the summer. (I hope I never find out.) We've had thundershowers the past two days. Maybe a half inch of rain, all told. Not enough to break the drought; but as somebody said, "Some is better than none." I think maybe that's from the new Stephen King book I'm reading, Blaze. Actually, it's a Richard Bachman book. I think since the cat has been out of the bag for years, Stephen should just stick to writing under his real name. But hey, some Stephen King is better than none, I say. I love his books, my favorite being The Shining. I'm so glad he didn't die when that van ran over him a while back.

I have a busy Sunday before me, so I best slug down my second cup of coffee and get in the shower. Everyone have a great Sabbath.

P.S. The photo above shows the snack table decorations at the June quilt guild meeting last week. Virginia B. did them. She's very good at stuff like that (and cooking).

I do empathize with the "Hotter than Hell" notion, yesterday it was 106 with 9% humidity. Almost turned down an offer to go shopping until I realized that the stores keep the AC cooler than I do at home, lol.

I do my pork in the crockpot. I put it in to cook very eary in the morning, add liquid smoke and seasalt, turn it on and walk away. It makes the most delicious smoked pork!!

Have a great day.

The butt IS the shoulder. I don't know why they call it that, but it is. I learned that on Emeril.

Stay cool.

South Carolina and Alabama....yes, we might be experiencing temperatures that are "hotter than hell"....or at least the humidity is! What I'd give for a mere 9%!
