May I Be Excused?

ReadingI have really not been feeling well for a few days. The fibromyalgia crap has combined with seasonal allergy symptoms to make me just want to take to my bed. So I went to Books-A-Million! this morning and loaded up on reading material. At least for the rest of today, I'm going to take up residence on the couch and do some reading.

Monday, my quilting bee (The Piecemakers) is having its first Sew Fun day at the Leeds Library. It will be like a mini-retreat. We'll bring our projects and sewing machines and play all day. I just have to be feeling better by then. I'm determined not to miss this.

Somewhere I heard that cranberry juice is good for you, so I got me a big jug of the stuff and I'm swilling it like a wino with a bottle of Thunderbird. I'm also taking my vitamins and prescription meds on schedule and thinking calming thoughts and praying. I'm not sure what else I can do.

So if you don't hear from me for a couple of days, don't take alarm. I'll be resting, reading, praying, swilling, and, I hope, sewing.

Sophie_on_bed Sophie says HEY!

On 03/30/2008, Jed said ...

Hello Aunt Susan! I hope you get to feeling better soon. By the way -- if you are worried about the sugar (actually, corn syrup) in cranberry juice, then you can get the unsweetened kind and add water. I put about 1-2 ounces in a 10 ounce glass. It's very tart, but I like it that way. An entire 32 ounce container has less corn syrup than one glass of the sweetened kind. It also has more cranberry juice than a gallon of what they usually sell as "cranberry juice."

Also, if you get the "all juice," look at the label. The "all juice" cranberry juice is sweetened with grape juice. It actually has a lot more grape juice than cranberry juice. You end up with as much sugar as in a can of Coke either way.

Stop and Buy the Roses

Star_borderOne of the fat quarters that I showed here Saturday came from a bolt of this fabric (at right). At the time, Terry mentioned that it would make a wonderful border to go with the fat quarters. But I didn't even know what I was going to make from the fat quarters, so I didn't know if I'd even need a border.

At home in my sewing room, going through books and patterns, I found just the design for these soft spring fabrics--Friendship Star (see photo below) from the book Quilts from The Quiltermaker's Gift (see other photo below). Now I had my design, and I was positive the quilt would need a border.

So yesterday, on our way back from the drive in the country, I asked Vann if he would stop at the quilt shop (since we were going right by it). And, being the best husband in the whole world, he agreed to stop. I got three yards, which is more than enough for borders. (Maybe some pillowcases too.) I so want to get started on this quilt right away, but I've vowed to finish Felicia's wedding quilt first. So why am I not in the sewing room??? Bye, y'all.

A Drive in the Country

Covered_bridge

This morning, Vann pulled me and Sophie out of bed early so that we could take a drive with him up to Oneonta, where he was going to pick up a box for his truck bed. Oneonta is in Blount County, which is just about as country as it gets. It's about a 45-minute drive to the north of us. The area is beautiful, and is called "The Covered Bridge Capital of Alabama," or something like that. I think they have seven covered bridges in the county, or maybe nine. This is one of them, which we didn't cross today, but we have driven across it in the past.

It was a very relaxing trip. We saw horses and cows and goats grazing in the pretty pastures.  We had coffee and sausage biscuits at McDonald's in Oneonta. Sophie and I both dozed off in the car on the drive home.

But now we're back home, and the laundry basket is running over. So--gotta get to work.

Quietly Easter

Ozzie_quiltWe had a wonderful Easter Sunday. First we went to Sunday school and church. There was the usual phenomenon, where people show up at church on Easter who wouldn't think about attending any other day of the year, and our sanctuary was packed cheek by jowl with worshippers. Pastor Chip gave us a rousing good sermon, and the choir was fantastic, with a solo performance by my friend Joan.

As soon as we got home and walked the doggies, Vann announced that it was time to hang the quilt we won in Nichole's blog giveaway a while back. It looks beautiful hanging in our foyer. We're very proud of this quilt. It represents a good part of what blogging means to me: wonderful, rich friendships. Thanks again, Nicole (and Ozzie). Your quilt has become an instant family treasure for us.

Time was when every holiday was a major family celebration here. But these days, we spend more and more holidays quietly. Yesterday was one of those times--just us and the two doggies. I cooked a pot of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, onions, and potatoes and a pan of cornbread and late in the afternoon, we chowed down. We spent the rest of the afternoon into the evening reading, and went to bed around midnight.

I love big boisterous holiday gatherings, but I love quiet ones too. There's something dear about a holiday spent with time and quietness to remember just why we're celebrating. Yesterday we celebrated the life and death and rebirth of a man from Galilee, a man named Jesus. He came to teach us to Love, to show us that Joy is possible, that Peace is necessary. He came to show us The Way.

And what is a holiday without sweets? Not as sweet! As you can see, we didn't forget the dessert. I made a Strawberry Jello Cake that looks like that one that somebody left out in the rain (a little soggy), but boy was it good. And Reed (who sat with his Ma through the entire church service and was good as pie) got down with some bright blue Peeps rabbits (photo by Buffy). Ummm, ummm. Peeps. Whoever invented them surely knew the joy of sugar.

Cake Peeps

Our Easter was my daughter, SIL & only granddaughter plus my MIL & my Mom who we recently had to move into assisted living. It was a nice time but I'm still stressing over my Mom & how she's NOT handling being out of her home & in assisted living. A Trip To the Toy Store

Fabrics

Yesterday, Vann and I took a ride over to Trussville to Heart to Heart Quilt Shop. I wanted to get there before the month of March was over so I could get my 20% birthday month discount. One of the owners, Terri, was putting together a fat-quarter bundle of wonderful spring colors, and I found another bundle that matched. Aren't they pretty? I came away with 19 beautiful fat quarters at a 20% discount. But, WAIT! That's not all.

Gripper_cropped

Vann can hardly go into a quilt shop without buying me something. And this is what he found for me on this trip: a Gypsy Gripper. I've been wanting one after I saw someone using it at retreat last month. I tried it out this morning, and it works like a charm. Suction cups grip your ruler tightly, and you hold the handle of the gripper while cutting. It really stabilizes the ruler and cuts way down and slipping. Edited 4-13-08: I have no idea what I meant to say at the end of that last sentence, but it makes no sense at all.

Thank you, my sweet husband, for a wonderful toy.  As you know, Quilting Toys R Me!

Easter Greetings

Basket
Our wishes and prayers go out to everyone for a happy and safe Easter weekend. May God bless you all with grace and peace.

We are very thankful this Holy Week for our sweet Sophie, who almost left us last Easter. But thanks to her strong little will and the good work of some wonderful vets, she's with us this year, and we thank God for her. (Right now, she and Daisy are barking their furry heads off at something going on outside. Inside voices, girls! Inside voices!)

********************************************************************************************************Sophie_easter
I wanted a nice photo of the girls wishing everyone a Happy Easter. Here's what I got. Sophie wouldn't cooperate 'cause she was mad at us for subjecting her to the horrors of a grooming--even though Diane comes right to our door with her tricked out grooming van, and thus Sophie doesn't have to spend all day in a cage at the groomer. You can't please that dog. So here she is, with that Sophie Belle Patterpaw pout on her furry countenance.  (Also SuSu left the lens cover on the bed.) Oh well, here's Soph, waiting for the Easter Squirrel.

********************************************************************************************************
Daisy Miss Daisy Dukes refused to pose at all. She just wanted to curl up on the afghan I was crocheting and take a nap.

There you have them--not exactly what I had in mind--but our sweet doggies, our own dog and our step-dog. We love you, girls.

Happy Easter, everybody. Woof!

If you'd like to see some more cute animals this Good Friday, head on over to The Friday Ark.

Balancing Act

Egg_5 I mentioned in my earlier post this morning our tradition of standing an egg on its end on the equinox each year. Well, here it is. We did it.

Whether this will work any other day of the year, I cannot swear. And I'm not sure what the feat proves. But we always get it to work on the spring equinox. We mostly forget about it on the fall equinox and just stand a pumpkin on its end.

Edited after some research: Sadly, that esteemed website, snopes.com, has again destroyed the magic and wonder in favor of hard science. According to their entry, this trick can be accomplished on any day of the year--not just the equinoxes. Hmmmph! What do they know? All I can say is that I've never done it on any day except the spring equinox. Ignore the fact that I've never TRIED to do it on any other day besides the spring equinox.

Hey, I'm glad you like the planter. It's one of my 'clearance babies.' My daughter is a florist and marked it way, way, way down after the holiday. Why Hello, Spring!

Bunnies_in_bathroomEarly this morning, the Earth stood on its end briefly, the Sun beat straight down on the Equator, and Spring began in the northern hemisphere.

We usually celebrate this day by standing a raw egg on its end. Word has it that this, the day of the Vernal Equinox, is one of only two days a year (the other being the autumn equinox) when this feat can be accomplished. If we do that today, I'll take a photo and show you that it can be done.

There are two things that come to mind when I think about the winter of 2007-08: 1) We had snow twice, and 2) Vann learned to love pajamas.
Vann_in_pjs_2
Doesn't he look comfy (and cute)? He still doesn't sleep in them. But now, like me, he looks forward to the moment that darkness falls so he can shed his regular clothes and slither into those soft, warm flannels.

Hope everyone is having a great First Day of Spring. I'm so far behind; why, I haven't even cooked my traditional Irish Pot Roast yet. I think that's what we'll have for Easter dinner, in lieu of the usual ham and potato salad.

Speaking of St. Patrick's Day, here's a beautiful card that I received from Katherine of the ClothPaperStudio Yahoo Group for my birthday. I'm extremely late showing it to you. I just love it. Inside is a traditional Irish blessing. Thanks Katherine.

A Visit from the Fabric Fairy

Peas_carrots

Here are some wonderful fabrics I have come by this week. The one above is from my DD Andy, for my birthday. It arrived Monday. Isn't it wonderful. It's from an American Jane fabric collection called "Peas and Carrots." One piece is panels that I'll use to make a quilt I think. The other contains panels for a fabric book. Some future baby will get these.

Playmates
Above are two fat quarters that I won in one of our games at guild on Monday. I don't know what the fabric collection of manufacturer is. There's no printing on the selvage to tell me, and I haven't been able to find either one of them on the internet. It doesn't appear to be American Jane or Dick and Jane. Anybody know what this fabric is?

Prayer_bearsw
Last night, Lori and I stuffed Prayer Bears. All I have to do is stitch up their little legs, and I'll have a sackful to give Ms. Brenda at church on Sunday.

We're having a very blustery day here at The Yellow House on Blackberry Creek. Sophie, Daisy, and I were outside just now and saw a crow blow by sideways.

BTW, Daisy is doing well. All her blood tests, etc., came back negative. She doesn't have epilepsy or anything else they can find. She is with us since last night while Lori visits her grandbaby Miss Lily in Houston for Easter. I told Daisy she was to have no hissy fits around me and scare me to death. So we're hoping for a peaceful Holy Week with our two favorite doggies.

Glad Daisy is well.

BQG Celebrates 30th Birthday

Q_pink_cakeYesterday, at the regular monthly meeting of Birmingham Quilters Guild, we celebrated our 30th birthday with a special program, special goodies including a huge birthday cake, a calendar block contest, games, and giveaways. Our program consisted a past- presidents' panel, in which I took part. We talked about how the guild had changed since our terms as president. We all agreed that one of the biggest changes has been in attendance. From an average attendance of about 60 when I was president in 1995-96 to an average of near 120 now. That's double!

We will be coming out with a 30th anniversary commemorative calendar for 2009, and the guild held a contest to choose 13 small journal quilts to appear in the calendar. Here are photos of some of those quilts. I thought they were all winners.

Susan, the pictures are wonderful, and I can tell you all had a glorious time. Please let me know if those calendars will be for sale because I would love to purchase one.

The needlework is just exquisite. Each piece is a delight. I have so much admiration for those who are so gifted. Needles and I just don't seem to have a good working relationship.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. And, of course, you can use my pin pillow idea. I would be so flattered, and I would love to see a picture of your pin pillow.

I mentioned in my post that I have another pillow for my butterfly pins, but I failed to mention that I have one more pillow that holds Christmas tree pins. I'll post those another time.

Again, thank you for your thoughtfulness.

Happy National Quilting Day

QuiltingToday is the 17th National Quilting Day, sponsored by The National Quilting Association, Inc.

I always try to set this day aside to work in the sewing room, but I don't think it will happen today. I have too many other things to take care of.

But here's a UFO that I found hanging in the sewing room closet. It contains some hand quilting I did in a workshop with Alex Anderson at the American Quilter's Society Show in Paducah, Kentucky. That was years ago, in the mid-90s.

I also want to show you a new gadget that I gave myself for a birthday present. It's the Sidewinder, and here it is.Sidewinder It came in last week, but I still haven't tried it out. I just put the thread spools and bobbins on it to set up the photo.

The Sidewinder is touted as a way to thread your bobbins without unthreading your sewing machine. That's what caught my attention. You know how aggravating it is to run out of bobbin thread in the middle of a project and have to unthread the machine needle to fill your bobbin.

But now a thought comes to me. Unless you keep two spools of each color/type of thread you plan to use, you're still going to have to unthread your machine to get the spool of thread off to put it on the Sidewinder. Hmmmph! Oh, well, it's still a cute little gadget, isn't it? I'll let you know whenever I get around to tryiing it out to see how well it works.

I got a disturbing call from Lori this morning. She called to tell me that our Daisy_2sweet doggy friend, Miss Daisy, had had a seizure. Lori was on her way to take Daisy to the vet. The seizure lasted only about 30 seconds or so, Lori said, and Daisy seemed perfectly fine as we were talking. But we're worried, naturally. We get jumpy around here when one of our doggy pals is in trouble. So please say a little prayer for Miss Daisy that she'll be fine.

You could get lots of extra bobbins and wind several before starting a project?! Or as you suggested, two spools of thread. I've seen it advertised too...it looks cute. Let us know the secret once you have tried it. Miss Daisy is in our prayers.

Thanks for visiting my blog through the Typepad site. I've been exploring your blog and see all your "little friends". When I read about Miss Daisy, it made me sad for a second and then I thought ... hey ... she needs to know that I have epilepsy and it's not a big deal. I take medicine and haven't had a seizure in a LONG time. I get acupuncture for my bad back, but needles are put in to treat my seizures as well. I'll be back to see how she's doing - please let us know.

On 03/16/2008, Nancy said ...

I've heard of the sidewinder. It looks pretty nifty. I love the look of the quilted piece at the top. I'm ready to try something like that, really plain, kind of, white on white is so elegant. I just seem to get bored without a lot of color. I think an intricate pattern would satisfy, though.
Nancy

On 03/17/2008, hunnybunny said ...

Ooh I just got a sidewinder too. I love my sewing machine but the bobbin winder on it stinks, a lot. I haven't used mine yet either but am so excited at the prospect! I hope that Miss Daisy feels better soon. She's quite the cutie.

You will love the sidewinder I think. I use the same color thread for all of my piecing so I usually wind 10 bobbins at a time of that color and then I don't worry about it until they all run out. I like your hand quilted piece. What are you going to do with it?

On 03/18/2008, Karen Lee said ...

Mama's Balloon People

Balloon_people_3
I just this morning discovered Kelli's "Show & Tell Friday" carnival at There's No Place Like Home. Sounds like a lot of fun, so I decided to participate.

My mama had these figurines for a long, long time. I don't even remember where or when she came by them. But I always loved them. Whenever the subject of "What You'll Get When I'm Gone" came up, I always said, "All I want are the Balloon People."

Mama passed away in January 2005. I got some other things too, but when my sisters and I were cleaning out Mama's apartment, I made sure that the Balloon People were in my hot little hands before I did anything else. (Thanks, Mama.)

I can't tell you anything about them, their origins or provenance. I can't even tell you why I love them so, but I do. I've always loved balloons. That's what I want at my funeral: lots of balloons and happy music. Not some stinky old funeral flowers and Amazing Grace played by Lurch on the Adams Family's organ (or was Lurch a Munster?). Anway, I want my homegoing party to be a party, not a wake.

How in the world did we get on the subject of funerals?

Be sure to go by Kelli's and check out all the wonderful Show & Tells listed on her Mr. Linky.

P.S. Mama also made the doily under the Balloon People.

Heeeeeeere's Our Sign

Sign_4Vann just finished hanging the sign that Penny at Lavender Hill Studio made for us to display by our front door. We both love it and think it's right in character with our home.

Vann and I married in 1994. At the time, I had a late-50s, ranch-style home that we both really loved. But when he moved in with all his stuff, we soon knew we needed bigger quarters.

So in 1996, we found The Yellow House, a two-story Cape Cod with full basement. The basement was Vann's onSign_vannly requirement, and I've always wanted a yellow house. So here we've been ever since. As the years wear on and our joints wear out, we sometimes wish The Yellow House didn't have so many stairs. We've talked of relocating to a flatter house; but we love this neighborhood, and we love our house. Besides, all Sophie's friends live here. She'd never go for a move.

Thank you, Penny, for creating such a beautiful piece to welcome visitors to our home.

A Respite from Rabbits

Lamp_3Enough with the rabbits for a while. I want to show you this lamp that I found at the Thrift Store on Friday. I paid just under $15 for it, but it didn't look nearly this good when I got it. The cord was frayed (I wouldn't dared have plugged it into electricity), and it was dirty and stained.

I loved it though, so I bought it anyway and turned it over to my talented husband who rewired it, put in new hardware, and cleaned it up. The shade didn't come with it either; it's one I already had. Now isn't it pretty. Vann thinks it's probably old.

Thanks to all of you who sent birthday wishes. Yesterday was one of the best birthdays ever. Vann took me to Olive Garden (which I love) for lunch. I had Chicken Marsala and Vann had Chicken Something Else. Along with their great salad and bread sticks, we over-ate and still had enough to bring home for lunch today. I thought, since it was my birthday, I'd have dessert too. But there was no room.

Altered Playing Card #11/52
Speaking of my Birthday, I received a lovely piece of altered art from Jenny R. of of the ClothPaperStudio Yahoo Group. Jenny's art inspired me for a design for altered playing card #11 in my series. Here it is.

Card_11_3

Jenny's creation is the embroidery floss spindle. I added a green paint wash to the card, the torn piece of green striped tissue paper, and the piece of ribbon. It's called "Sing," of course.

Thanks, Jenny, for your lovely rememberance.

Jenny has a wonderful craft site with all kinds of fun stuff to do. It's called Craft Test Dummies. I recommend you pay her a visit.

No Wabbits?

Bunny_bowlI guess there aren't as many rabbit collectors out there as I thought. But that won't deter me! Here are some more of my bunny collection. The first is a little treat bowl I found at the Thrift Store on Friday when my sister and our went treasure hunting. Look here, some Easter Bunny has already snuck in and filled it with candy bunny eggs.

Speaking of bunny eggs, here are five pretty marble ones that I also found at the Thrift Store.

Next is a closeup of a  quilt I made using Sharyn Craig's "Twist & Turn" technique. If memory serves, I got the bunny squares at Tiny Stitches quilt shop in Marietta, Ga., several years ago.

Here are a couple more shots. First is a lamp I got at "The Monkey's Uncle" gift shop right here in Leeds, Alabama. The other is a bunny I got at "Thyme and Again," a great garden and gift shop in Winterset, Georgia.

I have more rabbits, many more, that I plan to show you. But today is my birthday, you know. And my sweet husband is taking me out to lunch. So I have to go and doll up to look nice for him--and with as many birthdays as I've celebrating, dolling up could take a little while. Have a great day, everyone.

Hi Susan ~ I'm so glad your husband took you out for your birthday! I hope you've had a wonderful day celebrating.

I'm enjoying all your rabbits...I have only one rabbit in my house (but many in my yard--wish I could take pictures of those in cages!). The one in the house is a tall wooden wabbit that stands in the corner of our foyer. He's actually pretty cute. Now...if you had asked me for cows....those I have! :)

Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday to you! May your DH make you special day special! I call my DH my 'honey bunny'. He gave me a cute stuffed white and pink bunny years ago which I call my 'funny bunny' or pardon the expression, 'buns' :0) I enjoy following your collection. Thanks.

Hi Susan, Happy Birthday! I love all your rabbits...especially the lamp. It would take me all day to post how many I have around the house and yard.

Happy Belated Birthday. (My only rabbits would be on assorted pieces of fabric - mixed in with other animals, i.e. cats.)

Happy belated birthday! Glad it was a good one. (Sorry to be late, but I was in the wrestling with a lion headdress yesterday . . . )

I remembered that I do have one rabbit I can show you. I put this quilt on my dining table yesterday. It's an old UFO that I finsihed last year. Here's a couple links to pictures and the story:

Show Us Your Rabbits

Rabbit_2

The bunny is a favorite image of a lot of bloggers I know. So I'm offering a challenge. If you're one of those people who have lot of rabbits around your house, show us some pics. 'Tis the season for Easter Bunnies, after all. Be sure to leave a comment here with a link to your blog so we can see your rabbits.

These are only a couple of mine. I have many, many more bunnies around my house. I'll take more pictures and post them later. Photo 1 is the wallpaper border in my kitchen; photo 2 is a pillow I found at the thrift store a couple of years ago.)

This ATC is beautiful. That cat's expression gives it a lot of personality.
Those rolls (previous post)look delicious. Everything you cook looks so good. It sounds like you've been having rough weather. We are finally enjoying sun.

I think I like this card best--but you know me. I'm not called 'mom2fur' for nothing, LOL!
BTW, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who's chicken about sergers!
