Mama's Balloon People

Balloon_people_3
I just this morning discovered Kelli's "Show & Tell Friday" carnival at There's No Place Like Home. Sounds like a lot of fun, so I decided to participate.

My mama had these figurines for a long, long time. I don't even remember where or when she came by them. But I always loved them. Whenever the subject of "What You'll Get When I'm Gone" came up, I always said, "All I want are the Balloon People."

Mama passed away in January 2005. I got some other things too, but when my sisters and I were cleaning out Mama's apartment, I made sure that the Balloon People were in my hot little hands before I did anything else. (Thanks, Mama.)

I can't tell you anything about them, their origins or provenance. I can't even tell you why I love them so, but I do. I've always loved balloons. That's what I want at my funeral: lots of balloons and happy music. Not some stinky old funeral flowers and Amazing Grace played by Lurch on the Adams Family's organ (or was Lurch a Munster?). Anway, I want my homegoing party to be a party, not a wake.

How in the world did we get on the subject of funerals?

Be sure to go by Kelli's and check out all the wonderful Show & Tells listed on her Mr. Linky.

P.S. Mama also made the doily under the Balloon People.

Aren't those sweet!? I'm with you on the funeral thing, too. Wakes are so boring they put the dead to sleep. My husband says he wants giant TVs with rock videos playing, LOL! Me...I want everyone to go out to a great dinner and talk about what a wonderful (cough, cough) person I was!!!!
Hey, thanks for saying such a nice thing about the bag I made!
PS...Lurch was the Addam's family's butler.

You rang?

These figurines are so lovely Susan - I adore the colors, their delicate faces, and their postures. I have a bird figurine from my Grandmother who passed away in 2000 - I look at it every day.

Warmly,
Susan

These are really sweet. I can see why you wanted them. And I love the doily. The doilies I have from my grandmother have been used so much most of them have "issues", lol. I agree, the Irish had it right, wakes are good!

I love the balloon people, too!Do they have any markings on the bottoms? They are pretty and realistic; not "cutesy",and probably valuable as well. Thanks for sharing them! And you must read the paperback "Annie Freeman's Wonderful Traveling Funeral"!
Her best gal pals all wear red tennie-pumps and take HERs filled w/her ashes on trips, leaving her where she wanted to be, and celebrated along the way!
(You wouldn't mind if they play Amazine Grace on the beautiful bagpipes, would you?!!) heh, heh......

I have never seen andy like that---really different. Baloons at a funeral--that would be different. Maybe you could put your casket in a hot air baloon and get it to the cemetery that way---or sprinkle your ashes from one!! (hmmm, maybe I had better behave )

It is so special that you have these figurines. They look as if they have story to tell about being at a special party or a celebration

I'm with you about the balloons - of course, I want pink and pearl balloons. Now, I've learned that balloons are not environmentally friendly, but I still want them.

Your figurines must be such special treasure for you. My mother has a collection of antique figurines. She has told me that I should pick out the ones I want because she is going to leave some to family. She wants to sell the remaining ones.
