Quietly Easter

Ozzie_quiltWe had a wonderful Easter Sunday. First we went to Sunday school and church. There was the usual phenomenon, where people show up at church on Easter who wouldn't think about attending any other day of the year, and our sanctuary was packed cheek by jowl with worshippers. Pastor Chip gave us a rousing good sermon, and the choir was fantastic, with a solo performance by my friend Joan.

As soon as we got home and walked the doggies, Vann announced that it was time to hang the quilt we won in Nichole's blog giveaway a while back. It looks beautiful hanging in our foyer. We're very proud of this quilt. It represents a good part of what blogging means to me: wonderful, rich friendships. Thanks again, Nicole (and Ozzie). Your quilt has become an instant family treasure for us.

Time was when every holiday was a major family celebration here. But these days, we spend more and more holidays quietly. Yesterday was one of those times--just us and the two doggies. I cooked a pot of corned beef, cabbage, carrots, onions, and potatoes and a pan of cornbread and late in the afternoon, we chowed down. We spent the rest of the afternoon into the evening reading, and went to bed around midnight.

I love big boisterous holiday gatherings, but I love quiet ones too. There's something dear about a holiday spent with time and quietness to remember just why we're celebrating. Yesterday we celebrated the life and death and rebirth of a man from Galilee, a man named Jesus. He came to teach us to Love, to show us that Joy is possible, that Peace is necessary. He came to show us The Way.

And what is a holiday without sweets? Not as sweet! As you can see, we didn't forget the dessert. I made a Strawberry Jello Cake that looks like that one that somebody left out in the rain (a little soggy), but boy was it good. And Reed (who sat with his Ma through the entire church service and was good as pie) got down with some bright blue Peeps rabbits (photo by Buffy). Ummm, ummm. Peeps. Whoever invented them surely knew the joy of sugar.

Well, first off, that quilt is gorgeous. And, it looks beautiful displayed in your home.

But, your comments about special time with family and special time alone rang so true for me. I treasure all of my special times, but the time my husband and I share alone together is such a comfort to me.

Your story about your grandchild is so sweet. My grandson had Peeps yesterday, too. Of course his father, my son, had to show him what happens if you put Peeps in the microwave for a few seconds. If was so funny.

Thanks for sharing your special Easter day and your love of God.

Susan ~ It is totally amazing that you own that beautiful quilt from the giveaway! I'm sure it looks lovely in your home! Our Easter was on the quiet side, too, but enjoyable with my mom visiting.

That quilt looks just gorgeous in your home! Wow, to think you won that, what a thrill. Our Easter was my daughter, SIL & only granddaughter plus my MIL & my Mom who we recently had to move into assisted living. It was a nice time but I'm still stressing over my Mom & how she's NOT handling being out of her home & in assisted living. I can totally relate to what I've read about baby boomers having to deal with their elderly parents, not sure what the right decision is...sad times.

It sounds like you had a very nice Easter. The quilt looks like it has found a lovely home with the spot you have chosen for it - like it was made to be there.

Happy Easter - I am a bit late and behind in my blogging as I worked all Easter weekend.

Hi Susan,
The colors and patterns in the quilt are so rich and lovely - so warm and vibrant - reminds me of cinnamon. You are so lucky to have won, and just the right recipient, as it is clearly a treasure to you.

A quiet holiday sounds so peaceful. Your sweets look delicious.

I have to comment on the most important part of the post... I could eat that entire cake myself! looks soggy? no way! It looks absolutely finger-licking good. Where can I get the recipe? I have a really terrible sweet tooth and anytime I can try and new treat, I am thrilled.

That quilt looks stunning! How lucky are you to have won it. I love what you said about what it represents. You were the right person to win it and I am sure everyone who reads your post on it will know it.

Thanks for sharing your blog with us.
