Books for Christmas

Books I haven't done much sewing/quiltmaking in the past few weeks. I have done a bit of knitting and a lot of reading.

If you haven't yet read the Dewey book by Vicki Myron, I will tell you that I have not one compunction against recommending it. I loved this book and read it in less than 24 hours, even while tending to lots of chores. I will make one disclaimer, however: Be sure to have an adequate supply of tissues handy before getting to the last two chapters.

I'm now finishing up Stephen King's latest, a book of short stories entitled Just After Sunset, which I started before the holidays. My next two reading projects will be the John Lennon book and Ken's Follett's World Without End,
two really big books. I'm also reading When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson.
I read a chapter in it each night before going to sleep. It's about faith and healing--physical as well as spiritual healing. It contains some concepts you don't hear every Sunday morning from the traditional Methodist pulpit (well, at least I don't). I'm find it this book quite enlightening.
The little book on the bottom of the stack is Angela and the Baby Jesus by Frank McCourt. My sister gave it to me for Christmas. It's a children's book, a very entertaining one. I just love Frank McCourt. His Angela's Ashes was one of the best (and most squalid) books I've ever read.

Dewey
We had friends visiting from Texas this morning. They've left to go to see family in Cullman and will be back later tonight.

Vann is feeling quite well today. Right now, he and Sophie and Phillip have gone over to Paul's to help him do something. Ooops! I hear Sophie barking so I guess they're back.

World Without End was excellent.
I have just finished two books by Michael Cox, which were extremely good. The Meaning of Night and The Glass of Time. Historical fiction, and you feel like you are right there in Victorian London.

This book is on my to read list. I grew up in a small town in Iowa - and I have wanted to read this book since I heard about it. I have more books to read than I have time - but I am going to fit this one in.

Lucky Me!

6a00e5514ca1c9883401053692b3ec970b-pi I just went over to visit Donna's blog and found out that I've won this beautiful quilt in her latest giveaway. I was so surprised and thrilled; I think my mouth is still gaping open.

I think the colors will look great in my living room, so I'll probably drape the quilt over the back of one of the sofas and use it for a cuddle quilt for reading and tv watching.

Thank you so much, Donna. Your quilting and your fabric choices are lovely. And you're so very generous with your time and talents. I'm still planning to finish my Twisted Turning Twenty quilt when things get a little calmer around here.

Before/After

Orn Jeans Fixed jeans

My super-talented, very artistic friend Diane at Sooner or Later fixed Jesse's jeans right up. Sorry I can't make her photo larger. It gets fuzzier. But I know you can see those rewoven jeans legs.

Just wait till Jesse sees. He's going to have a fit! Thanks Diane.

Added 12-29-08: Vann says that I should explain that Diane Photoshopped the changes in Jesse's jeans in the photo; she didn't actually reweave them. (But I bet she could have if she'd wanted to.)

Wishing You a Redbird Christmas

Redbird 1 The redbirds just keep flying in at The Yellow House. The card at right is from our good friends, Marla and Jerry, who also gave us the redbird ornament below and the little pine tree that he's hanging on (and a beautiful plate and some great cookies). The redbirds-in-the-snow card is from our daughter Andy and our grandson Jesse.

Vann's chemo yesterday was long and tiring. He's not as chipper today as he was after Monday's treatment, but he's hanging in and Amy, Phillip, and I are taking good care of him.

We're planning a quiet Christmas Eve with just us, then we'll have Christmas Dinner tomorrow with the kids.

Here's wishing all of you a very magical Redbird Christmas. Stay warm and safe. Be blessed.

Thumbs Up!

Vann Chemo Vann's chemotherapy went well yesterday. So far, no nausea. In fact, he's feeling better than he has felt since his laproscopic surgery. Thanks again to everyone for all your well wishes and prayers.

We go again today for the really dreaded treatment. This one is supposed to make him hypersensitive to cold. He won't be able to drink anything cold or touch anything cold after the treatment. It's really cold here, so he and Phillip dragged out all his cold-weather gear last night (even a balaclava and goggles).

Gene and Maria stopped in this morning to drop off a pot of chili that Maria cooked for us. They were on their way to south Alabama but will be home tonight.

I tried to get a photo of Maria and Sophie. But Sophie always get so excited when she sees Maria, so she wouldn't be still. It's a good shot of Maria though.Maria & Soph

Simon Says, "What a great weekend!"

Simon's Face 2Phillip and Amy returned safely from south Georgia. Carrie brought Simon (her parents' doggie pictured at left) to see us. Vann and I went to church on Sunday morning. And on Sunday afternoon, we had a gazzillion visitors.

Simon is a 13-week-old Labradoodle. Sophie loves him, as do we all. Since he lives just down the road from us, we hope to see this fellow often.

Vann got lots of love, prayers, support, and hugs at church. Several of his guy friends came by our pew to give Vann a hug and to say, "I love you, man, and I'm praying for you every day." And, naturally, all the ladies gave him hugs too. He got several "thumbs up" gestures from across the isle from folks who weren't close enough to hug him.

When we got home, Horace and Marcie (friends from north Georgia) were waiting for us, as were Phillip, Amy, and Carrie. Horace and Marcie had stopped by on their way to their cabin in Wyoming where they plan to spend Christmas in the snow. We had ham croissants and potato salad for lunch, with a dessert of pecan tarts.

Before Horace and Marcie left, Bob and Mary Beth (neighbors) dropped in for a while. They were both sporting new motorocycle boots. Minutes after Bob and Mary Beth left, Gene and Maria (more neighbors) came by. We spent a long time visiting with them. And as soon as they left, Carrie's brother John came in. Finally at about 8:00, we ran everyone off so Vann could get some rest. He feels great this morning--better than he has felt in a while. So I guess good company is good for him.

This is a chemo day. We're scheduled to be at the doctor's office at 1:00. Vann is dreading it, but I know he'll do fine. Phillip is going with us.

I hope everyone in Blogland had as good a weekend as we had. Here are a couple of pictures of Simon with Carrie and Phillip.

Knitty Gritty

Knitting yarn,e tc This is the yarn that my Autumn Yarn/Coffee swap partner Alicia sent me back in November. I love Vanna's Choice yarn. The colors are so soft, and so is the yarn. It's a 100% acrylic, machine washable, worsted weight yarn that feels and looks more like a soft wool, without the scratch and itch.

I think I'm going to use the pink to knit the scarf and hat in the photo above. The project is in Fons and Porter's "For the Love of Knitting" magazine, Knitting mag just out this fall. On the left is a photo of the premier issue, which contains the scarf and hat shown as well as many other beautiful projects. If you knit, you'll probably want to have a look at this new mag.

Phillip and Amy left this morning to drive to south Georgia to see their grandparents. They'll be back tomorrow afternoon.

It's still rainy and dreary here, as it has been for days and days. I love rainy days, but even I am longing to see a little sunshine.

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

It's a Fit!

Cap 2 Cap 3

Aren't these two cute? (Click on photos to enlarge.) Our sweet friend Ashleigh, who lives next door, is knitting Vann a soft and warm toboggan, in case he should lose his hair during chemo. Or not; Everybody needs a warm hat during the wintertime.

She brought her work over last night for a fitting, and I took pictures. I don't know who Vann was talking to on the phone, but Ashleigh was giggling her head off because Vann looked funny with knitting needles sticking out of his head. Andy also came over and cleaned up the kitchen for me, for which I was extra grateful.

Phillip and Carrie arrived in the late afternoon. And Jesse and I visited the new Bass Pro Shop to get Jesse some new boots; but they were out of the style he wants, so we're waiting for a new shipment. Phew! It was a busy evening!

Vann had his port-a-cath surgery this morning. All went well and we're home now. We were only at the hospital from 6:30 a.m. till about 10:00.

Now I think I'll go and chill out in my big chair with a book for a while this afternoon. Hope everyone is having a good Tuesday.

Signs

Cardinals Yesterday I read Fannie Flagg's A Redbird Christmas. With Fannie's trademark humor and ability to draw characters that you would swear you've known, she tells the story of a Christmas miracle involving a red cardinal named Jack in the south Alabama bayou town of Lost River. When I got to the recipe section (Yep, most of her books have recipes.) I found this beautiful color print of some redbirds. Knowing that both my sisters had checked out this very library book before me, I'm wondering if one of them left it there.

Second part of story: This morning Sophie and I were having our morning walk over in the wooded vacant lot across from The Yellow House. I was thinking about that sweet book I had finished reading last night, and what should fly right past my nose and light on a limb beside me but a red cardinal. I'm not sure it was Jack, but I spoke to him just the same.

Glass bird Seconds later as Sophie and I were coming down the path out of the woods, I looked down on the ground and here's what I saw (photo at right).

Do you see the cardinal? I brought it in and showed Vann and asked him what he saw and he said, "A little bird." But I'm sure it's a cardinal. See the little crest on top of his head. I'm naming him Jack.

I don't know what all this means. I've never really believed in signs--not really. I've always thought that God works more through our hearts and minds to show and tell us things and to lead us. But things like this are making me wonder.

I didn't write about the Wal-Mart incident last week--another possible sign. I was thinking on my way there how my prayer life these days had become sort of yakky. I just yak yak yak all day, asking God to do things my way. I had never stopped to listen to what he has to say back. So ok, I told myself, I'm going to hush up for a while and just listen.

After I'd made my purchases and checked out, I started out of the store and for some reason I turned toward the exit on the right--whereas I was parked way down on the left side of the store. When I got almost to the door, I heard someone call my name. It was my friend, Jean, who has been undergoing chemotherapy. Her husband, who is also undergoing chemo, was diagnosed at almost the same time. So they're a two-chemo family.

Jean and I had a nice talk and assurred each other that we were in each other's prayers. Then Jean said something that touched me: she said "I thought I trusted God before this happened, but now I know what trusting God really mean." She added you have to turn everything over to him and let him handle things. In other words, when we give our cares and requests to God, we don't need to give him a set of instructions to go along with them. He knows his job better than we do.

So then, I'm in the car driving back home, thinking of what Jean had said, and then the yakkking started again. "But God," I argued. "I'm afraid I might forget to say something or do something in my prayers that will make a big difference. I can't take the chance that I haven't done things, said things the way you want me to."

Just then, I had driven under a big power transformer. Well something or Somebody decided it was time for that particular transformer to make a statement. It exploded with a very, very loud boom, and fire and sparks flew all around my car. It was like God was saying, "I'VE GOT THIS! YOU CAN HUSH NOW."

So I did.

Ooooooh! Didn't you just love that book? I'm SUCH a Fannie Flagg fan! She ROCKS! (Remember her on Candid Camera?) I read Redbird Christmas at least a year ago & loved it! And those redbirds are definitely signs! How could they be just coincidence? I sort of think God (or the Great Spirit, etc.) figures it's good to use ANY method that gets people's attention! And that transformer would definitely grab a person's attention!

Oh, my! Talk about the proverbial bolt from the sky! God does have a sense of humor, doesn't he! One thing I know for certain...He loves you and wants to hear from you. True, he probably prefers a chance to get a word in edgewise! :-)
DH and I were talking this morning about the verse in Eph 6 where it says to pray always, all kinds of prayers about everything. When your mind is full of talking to God, it doesn't have space left for wrong thoughts, fear, etc. Not a bad thing! Bless you both!

Remarkable post, Susan...a keeper that I will print and put in my journal.
One of my favorite ways to pray is simply say, "Thy will be done..." and then wait.

I have that book here waiting for me to read it. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed it.

Susan, I know just what you mean. I have been through the experience of "letting go and letting God". Even though I prayed constantly, I wanted God's answer to be what I wanted most. He truly does speak to us, if we can just listen. There are times in life that are difficult beyond imagination, and it is those times that teach us the only way is through Him.

I enjoyed reading about the redbird book and then your find. I think cardinals are just beautiful, especially against a winter background. The glass you found is rather unique and its so interesting how these redbirds just kept appearing while or after you finished the book.

Once again I'm behind on my reading, but not on my prayers. I'm glad to read that things are going well so far. Love the picture of Vann in the hat! What good friends you have to support you - I'm so glad.

I truly believe in the power of prayer, and the fact that there can be signs. I'll never forget my mom telling me the following story. I was very, very little, and my mom was pregnant with my sister. They were at a company picnic in the summer, and my dad went out to play baseball with the others. My mom told him he was too old to play - he was 45 or 46 then I think- and that he'd probably break a leg or something. He laughed and went out to play. And broke his leg. This was in 1949, and there wasn't any sick leave pay or anything like that back then. He couldn't work for several months. My mom said she just had a talk with God and said she just couldn't deal with this, so she was putting all of us in his care. A month or two later one of her brothers - who made very good money doing construction for the government - came to offer his help. He got out his checkbook and asked how much money they needed. She said God was taking care of them - that we had enough money to get buy thanks to His help. You see, she was a bookkeeper at the bank for 20 years before I was born - so she knew how to keep books. When she added up the bills they totaled more money than was in the checkbook. So she just told God she trusted him to take care of us, and started paying the bills. She wrote a check for every bill, carefully subtracted it from the checkbook, and when she was done there was still money left over. She double and triple checked her figures, and everything was correct. She'd added up the bills correctly, and she'd subtracted correctly as she wrote the checks. She knew it wasn't possible, but it happened. A miracle with absolutely no explanation than the fact that God was taking care of us. I'll never forget that story.

May God continue to take care of you, Vann, Sophie and all those you love.

There's Good, There's Evil, and Then There's Batman

Ledger2304 Andy didn't forget to bring the dvd, so last night Vann and I watched "The Dark Knight." This is definitely the darkest of all the Batman movies. Not for children, in my opinion. It was very hard for me to watch parts of it, and I love scary stuff and thrillers. Lots of very intense violence.

While Christian Bale didn't play the best Batman I've seen, Heath Ledger was by far the baddest of all the Jokers. His character would make Hannibal Lecter look like Santa Claus. I mean, this dude is E-vil!

The plot was a little complicated, and the sound was terrible (Sensaround definitely doesn't work in one's living room), and I admit I was so tired that I zoned out in a couple of a scenes. But it was definitely worth watching to see Heath Ledger's awesome performance. (Just make sure the kiddies are in bed before you plug it in.) The world lost a very good actor when it lost this young man.

VANN UPDATE
We visited with Dr. Wood yesterday. We go on Tuesday for Vann to have the port installed. Phillip and Carrie are coming Monday and Amy on Tuesday. Or is it the other way 'round? Anyway, we'll be glad when they get here.

I Bee Blogging

Bee Last night after work, our daughter Andy came by and we watched "Bee Movie." Phillip and Carrie sent it and a "Dirty Harry" dvd to Vann for his birthday.

The movie was lots of fun and had a good moral: "share your honey." And being as how I love bees and Vann loves animated movies, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Andy had to leave before it was over because she was very tired.

Yesterday I cooked some of the venison steaks that Bill brought to Vann last week. Smothered them in milk gravy. Very good. I gave Sophie a small helping, which she deemed most scrumptious.

I got the little bee toy in the photo several years ago at the Birmingham Museum of Art gift shop. Isn't he cute? Please ignore the dust. That photo was shot in my sewing room, which is off limits to the cleaning ladies.

I have to think of something to make to take to the neighborhood Christmas party at Paul and Karen's tomorrow night. I'm a little tired of baking cakes. Maybe a nice dip. Hmmm. Or some cookies. The guys all seem to like cookes. Cowboy Cookies are easy.

As mentioned, we meet with Vann's surgeon this afternoon to schedule getting the port. Then tonight, I think we're going to watch "Dark Knight," if Andy doesn't forget to bring it to us.

What a cute lil' bee! Hey! Maybe it can be your "I BEE-lieve" mascot for Vann's healing! I'm on my normal December 'old favorite Christmas movies' kick. GOT to watch Scrooge (the one with Alistair Simms!) Miracle on 34th Street (the original - Edmond Gwynn IS Santa, you know!) It's a Wonderful Life because it IS and because I adore Jimmy Stewart, White Christmas (if nothing else, just to hear the song "Sisters") and a few others! I am soaking up all the sugary movies I can! No calories, and I LOVE them! LOL! I need to check out the Bee Movie! Oh, my goodness! Milk gravy! I could jump straight in a vat of it and eat my way OUT! It's my FAVORITE thing next to meatloaf. And what are Cowboy cookies, please ma'am? I take it no cowboys will be harmed in their making. Bwahahahaha ... sorry. LOVE YOU! (You, too Vann!)

I Didn't Know We Could Bring Cameras

 Knitting e3

I made lots of progress on my current knitting project, a scarf, while Vann had his first chemotherapy treatment yesterday. It was long, and I wasn't allowed to stay in the room with him because there were too many patients having treatments. I didn't know I would have been allowed to take my camera, but I could have. One perky young woman, dressed in a pink doo rag and pink baseball cap was there for her breast cancer treatment. She had one of the nurses take her picture with her camera for her journal.

So I didn't get a photo of Vann this time, but trust me--he was very cute lying back in a big pink leather recliner, eating peanut butter crackers and drinking a Sprite. Then I had to leave and go to the waiting room and tend to my knitting.

Dr. L. is sending us back to the surgeon, Dr. W., to have a port inserted so that they won't have to put a needle in Vann's vein for each treatment. His next chemo is scheduled for Dec. 22 and 23, after he gets the port.

Meanwhile the cards, letters, prayers, gifts, phone calls, additions to the Prayer Quilt, and notes slipped under the doormat keep pouring in.

Carads 2

Thank you all so very much for your caring and concern--and most especially your prayers. And look what I received this morning from my dear, dear friend Kai. On the back are the words, "The caterpillar thought the world was over, and then she became a butterfly." I love you, Kai.

Butterfly

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.

Glad they are putting in a port. Much less taxing on the body! Your knitted piece is looking beautiful! What yarn is that? I'm assuming the colors are already worked into the skein, right? It's so PRETTY! I was hoping the butterfly would give you a lil' boost. The minute I saw it, I had to get it for you! It's not 'fine jewelry' but if love were gems, that small thing would be worth a lot! HUGS TO YOU & VANN today!

When my father was undergoing chemo my sister Nicki and I would bring in a picnic lunch and keep him company. It was an all day affair so we would drop him off in the morning and then on our lunch break would meet up with him (well, it's not like he was going anywhere!) and visit for an hour or so.

The chemo nurses were always so nice and accomodating. I'm sure if we wanted to commence with square dancing they would have cheerfully allowed it.

My very best to Vann and you hang in there too.

Home

Family We're home already. Vann needed time to rest up before starting his chemo on Wednesday, so we came on back today. We're all three very tired, especially Vann. But even Sophie is a bit pooped too.

Here are photos I took while at Vann's parents' house. The one at right is (back row, from left) Vann's sister Fran and Vann; (front row, left to right) Vann's brothers Ben and Kenneth.

The second photo is Vann and his Dad Grover. His mom didn't feel like having her photo taken. And the last photo is the lady herself--Miss Sophie Belle Patterpaw.

Family 3

And here's a note that our friend Betty W. sent to Vann for his prayer quilt. It's a quote from St. Theresa of Avila:

Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing.
God only is changeless.
Patience gains all things.
Who has God, wants nothing.
God alone suffices.

Thank you, Betty. And thank you, Mary, for delivering it. May God bless you both.

On Taxing the Tumescent

Cow_1 From the "Do What, Now? Department" comes this. According to the EPA, cow flatulence is the culprit behind (no pun intended) global warming. So the government is considering taxing each cow in the country. Taxes will range upwards to $175 per head. Er, well, maybe "head" isn't the right word here, but you get the drift--or you will if you stand downwind from a herd of the bloated beasts.

Now I'm no big lover of cow flatulence, or any other kind of flatulence. But is taxing really the solution to this? Wouldn't some big Bovine Gas-X tablets be a better solution? Or removing some of the roughage from the cows' diets? Everybody knows what raw vegetables can do to a digestive system when eaten in huge quantities.

I don't see how taxing the critters will stop the gaseous emissions anyway. It'll just cause steak and hamburger and dairy products to cost more. The cows will continue to produce the noxious fumes, the planet will continue to warm and the government will continue to come up with more ridiculous schemes to collect more taxes. And how would you like to be a farmer who tries to explain to his dairy herd that they can no longer pass gas because it's costing him too much money?

I say this movement has got to stop right now. Because if Uncle Sam can tax cow farts, it's conceiveable that he could extend that tax to humans. I know a few people that the government could make a mint off of in that regard. Be warned, people: Today's it's Bossie, tomorrow it might be Uncle Clyde or Grandma Clara.

NOTE: We are leaving early in the morning to drive down to south Georgia to see Vann's family. We'll be back Monday evening. Just didn't want anybody to think we'd dropped off the face of the earth.

OMG, I'm laughing so hard. That is so goofy, but I've read it too. Poor cows. I say if we tax the cows we have to tax the windy politicians who also send off so much hot wind that it has to be effecting the global warming as well. So let's be fair with this taxing. And if we have to get into taxing all those we know with "global warming tendancies" oh my! That might be a poot, I mean hoot! LOL You guys have a fun visit with Vann's family.

Good grief. Maybe those cows should eat big Bean-O tablets.
They getcha one way or another. We get our electricity here from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). Okay, so we've been told for years to conserve. We've been turning off lights, etc.
The trouble is, the less we use, the less LIPA earns.
So they're talking about a 17% (yes, that 1-7) increase in our bills over the next few years to make up for the money lost!
Damned if we do and damned if we don't.
Hey, do you think cow essence could be put in a tank and sent to these idiots?

Promise of Prayer

Amy & PhillipI think I must be one of the most fortunate and blessed people on this planet. Not only do I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful and loving children (Andy and Cait), and one handsome grandson (Jesse), I also have two of the greatest stepchildren in the world (Amy and Phillip, shown at left). In fact, I never even think of them as stepchildren, any more than Vann thinks of Andy, Cait, and Jesse as steps.

All our kids are talented and smart. But right now, I want to tell you what Amy did. She set up this website, Promise of Prayer. On it, she tells the story of her dad's illness and asks for prayers for his healing. She also has a blog on the site where she tracks our journey to recovery, as well as an area where you can leave prayers for Vann or request prayers for someone dear to you. Please visit Promise of Prayer and see what a talented daughter we have in Amy.

Thank you, sweet Amy. It's a great website, and you're a great young woman. We love you.

Vann's hunting buddy, Bill, came by today with a cooler full of venison. When he heard that the doctors had told Vann that he needs lots of protein, Bill knew that here at last was something he could do for his friend. He went hunting. Early yesterday morning, just before daylight, Bill was in his shooting house. He says that's when he does some of his best praying. He said that when he had finished praying for his family, he said, "Now, Lord, you know I never have asked you to let me shoot a deer, but this isn't for me; it's for my buddy Vann. If you'd just let a big old doe come by here and let me shoot her for Vann, I'd be so grateful." Five minutes later, guess what walked by Bill's shooting house? We now have a freezer full of fresh venison--protein o'plenty.

Vann is scheduled to begin his chemotherapy next Wednesday and Thursday. He'll be on a twice-a-week schedule for a while.

I can't close without thanking all of you once again for your prayers. We continue to pray for each of you every day as well as all our friends and family who are keeping us in their thoughts and prayers. God bless you all.

Hi Susan & Vann. I'm going to visit the site as soon as I post this. I'm so glad you have such wonderful children in your lives. Continued prayers & positive thoughts for you all. Loved the story of Vann's hunting friend. :)

I visited & bookmarked Amy's website. What a sweet & beautiful young woman. You already know how I feel about you & Vann, and you know that my prayers flow in a constant stream for you. I'm so glad Vann's buddy managed to provide the very thing Vann can use! PRAYER IS POWERFUL & IT WORKS. People are sometimes reluctant to pray for certain things because they feel it may be too 'silly' or 'mundane' but NOTHING prayed for from the heart is any less than important! And I think - no, I KNOW - that there are two sets of two words more important than any others - "I BELIEVE" and "THANK YOU!" HUGS to you & Vann!

Embarrassment of Riches

Charisma Well, actually, it's not all this wonderful fabric that's embarrassing; it's more how I came to have it all.

You'll recall that I talked about how I was struggling to resist the temptation to buy this beautiful Moda collection, Charisma, to make a quilt to hang in our living room. Well, I bowed to temptation twice, once without even knowing it apparently. Well, I knew it, I just forgot.

One day last week, I ordered the collection, along with Sandy Gervais's pattern from Hancock's of Paducah. It came the very next day. Then the very NEXT day, I got a notice from Ebay that a seller had filed a complaint against me for failing to pay for another layer cake of the same Charisma fabric. When I received the notice, I remembered (vaguely) bidding on the item. But I never received a notice that I had won the auction--not from Ebay and not from the seller, so not being someone who checks in at Ebay regularly, I forgot about it. But as I was being complained on, I figured I'd better pay for the item. I'm sure I'll find some use for the second pack.

It's very rainy, windy, and chilly here today. We've had unusually cold weather for November here in North Central Alabama. But that's ok with me. I like cold weather.

Vann is doing well today. We have an appointment with Dr. Lakhanpal on Dec. 10, but we could go sooner, if they can work us in.

Back in the Saddle

Vann and Soph Look who I caught sneaking off for a ride around the 'hood. Neither one of them wanted to hear any of my mothering advice, so off they went. They're out now, making the rounds.

Vann is feeling much better today. (Thank you, Father God.) The surgery sites are healing fine, and he isn't having nearly as much pain. Our visit with Dr. Wood (the surgeon) went well yesterday. Now we're waiting until our oncologist, Dr. Lakinpal calls with our time to come in and talk about treatment.

We continue to soak up the blessings of your prayers and those of countless others. We feel like "thank you" is an inadequate response to all the caring. We pray for you all daily, and we love you dearly.

When my dad was having his chemo treatments, I used to go sit with him and bring a light lunch. We would sit and joke with the nurses and distract ourselves. Now that he is well and I can look back at that time, I am grateful for the time we spent together, even under such odd circumstances.

For the Love of Friends

Bee Prayer Quilt Today was my quilting bee's annual Christmas party, held again at Sally's. What a wonderful morning we spent, enjoying friendship and good food. The highlight of the meeting for me was Vann's Prayer Quilt, shown at left. Sally made it, then had bee members, guild members, and other friends of mine and Vann's sign notes to him to attach to the quilt. You can see some of them on the bottom of the quilt. (Click on photo for a larger view.) Others are in a pocket that Sally sewed to the backing.

Vann was overwhelmed when I gave it to him. "The only way I can ever thank all these people," he said, "is to get well." (And the whole congregation said "AMEN!" )

If anyone reading this would like to add anything (a note, a Bible verse, a line of poetry, or just your name) to Vann's prayer quilt, e-mail me at suscleve@aol.com and I'll give you the mailing address.

We have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with Vann's surgeon. We're hoping he'll have the results of the biopsies so that we can get on with treatment.

We are so very blessed by your prayer offerings, and we lift you up to God every day. Please continue to pray.

I would like to share this comment that my beautiful friend Kai left in response to "Plucking Daisies."

"I believe maybe it's the same as with friends. We are so reluctant to allow our friends to do for US because we think we are the ones who should give to & do for them. But a friend told me once that I was being SELFISH to not allow my friends the JOY of helping ME. That stuck in my head & I've never forgotten that it IS as blessed to receive as to give. I guess I just never considered that before. And I love the reminder that we need to give God or the Great Spirit or Buddha or whatever name we call the Creator the opportunity & the JOY to prove HIS desire to care for US. I will remember to pluck daisies on my own behalf, but also continue to pluck them for you & Vann! MUCH LOVE, Susan!"

Thank you, Kai, for such a lovely comparison. I have an ornament hanging on my front-door Christmas wreath that says, "God gives us friends to show us that we don't have to walk alone." He certainly has given us an abundance of them. Thank you all for being our friends.

And this comment from a dear friend, Trudy Neill:
"Have you ever sat in front of a fireplace and watched the glowing embers? One old log can burn brightly for a while, but then as it loses its energy, the flame lessens and so does the warmth it provides. But...add another log, and the two join forces and the flame rekindles and the flames glow forth and heat in all its glory is there!!!! So it is with love, and prayer...one prayer is wonderful, but the joining of more than one prayer, gives off so much energy it flies upward to the heavens. May your week be warmed with love and the prayers of all of us.
Love,
Trudy
"

Thank you, Trudy. I love your warm and beautiful word image.

And finally, here's the annual picture of the Piecemaker's Quilting Bee.

Much love today to you and Vann. I am eager to learn the biopsy results so we can all know EXACTLY where & how to focus our prayers!

Iron Bowl Weekend

Heart We had a very full weekend. On Saturday, Andy (our daughter who lives near us) came over and we watched The Iron Bowl together. Bama won, something to nothing (I forget the actual score). ROLL TIDE! Can't say it was a nail-biter. Auburn never really threatened. I'm a really true Bama fan, but I think Nick Saban made an ass of himself during the game--especially considering the fact that his team was dominating. Screaming and yelling and kicking and cussing! Is that any example to set for young men? I don't know. Well anyway, now it's on to Atlanta, and let's win there! Try to get a grip, Coach.

Yesterday, I went to church. Vann's tummy is still quite painful from the surgery, so he stayed home. When I returned from church, his friends Gene and Mike were visiting.

I made chicken and rice for lunch; and then in the evening, we were all ready to watch the premier of "24," which for some reason I thought would be on. When we couldn't find it, I looked it up on the Internet and was told that the premier is actually January 11. I have no idea where I got that idea. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Oh, the heart in the photo? It's a gift for a friend.

Hi Susan. I'm taking a break from decorating my Christmas tree.

I wanted to let you and Vann know that you are in my prayers. And, I do believe in praying big, and in praying specific. God is hearing your names from me.

Hope Vann soon will be feeling stronger.
Sometimes I think that a programme is due to be on and get already to watch it only to find I've got it wrong. All this week on one of our channels is Jane Austen. I'm in my element. Last night was Persuasion, tonight Pride & P, then Emma ,Northanger Abbey, and so. Great.

Well, I confess I am SOOOOOO not a fan of ANY sport, so football is a mystery to me. But good sportsmanship ALWAYS applies to ANY situation, so shame on that young man! Bah, Humbug! About '24' - I WISH I had started watching that from its inception. Don't know WHY I never did because it certainly gets rave reviews! I hope Vann's tummy heals quickly. I can imagine how uncomfortable he must feel! Give him a (gentle) hug from me and be SURE he gives you one in return! And your heart is absolutely beautiful. Oh, so is the one you MADE! (Smile!)
