Inside the Sad Cafe

Paige
Maybe the time has drawn the faces I recall,
But things in this life change very slowly,
If they ever change at all
There's no use in asking why,
It just turned out that way
So meet me at midnight
Beside the Sad Cafe.
--"Sad Cafe" by The Eagles

Paige Parnell is the real winner, and we know that. But we're still sad. Less than 200 votes decided the outcome of this election. To us, last night, as we gathered, dispirited and heartbroken, this was just another indication that it's a losing battle, that the only way to win an election is to run a dirty, dishonest campaign. No matter how qualified you are, or how unqualified your opponent, you're fighting a losing battle unless you get down in the mud and splash around like pigs.

This is as close as I've ever come to observing up close and personal how the political process works, at least in Alabama. I don't like it.

But I am so very proud of my beautiful cousin for standing firm in her integrity. To her, and to all of us, a win is not a win if you come out with mud and filth dripping from you. Our time will come, Cuz. "Things in this life change very slowly," but they do change. They do.

I Googled your cousin this morning to find the results of yesterday's election. I was sorry to read she had come so close to winning. You're right; change is slow to come.

I also had searched so learned of Paige's narrow defeat but there is always next time. It is sad when so many voters don't vote and so many that do vote blindly.

Applause to Paige for being the best candidate for the job, for caring more about people than about party, and for her integrity in running a positive campaign. Well done!

Hugs all around!

Poll Watching

302515_251174101603983_100001341861235_611781_65259251_n

I have never been a poll watcher in my life--but I'm gonna be one today. My dear cousin Paige, who is running for Alabama District 45 state congressional representative asked me if I would. And since I made the promise that I would do anything I could to help with her campaign that I could, I said yes. I'm supposed to make sure everything goes according to hoyle, and there are no shenanigans. I'm not sure I'll know a shenanigan if I see one, but I'm going to be eagle eyed and alert anyway.

If you happen to live in Alabama congressional district 45, please bundle up and go out and vote for Paige today. Our communities, people, and schools need her honesty, intelligence, wisdom, experience, and dedication working for us. The alternative is more of the same that has put our state near the bottom in every category there is--from education to economics to honest government.

Paige would have my vote if I lived in her district - or state!

Happy poll watching. Sadly, there is a need for vigilance since some people take the scary view that the ends justify the means and that just has NO place in an election!! NO WAY, NO HOW!!

Chilly and rainy here and I should be sewing.

Hugs!

Susan, I got behind on my blogs but loved catching up with your life, my you've been busy. I LOVE Bentley, you did a marvelous job bringing that bear to life, I'm thrilled you found a hat for him. Dating!! OMG, good luck with that, I'm happy you had a nice evening, what a leap of faith, even agreeing to go to dinner, I'm proud of you for being so brave. We played the game Apples to Apples on Thanksgiving Day and loved it, if you've not played it give it a try. Good Luck with your Poll Watching, and to your cousin Paige. It's hard to find good folks who are willing to run for public office, I hope all goes well.

Bentley Got a Hat

Bentley Santa

Bentley's hat fits perfectly. He looks great sitting on the front porch with his bright red santa hat and his wooly plaid scarf. The bear is having to spend a few days inside sitting on the quilt rack in the foyer, however. Windy, rainy weather drove him inside.

I had a second date with Pete on Saturday night. He arrived and rang the doorbell, and when I opened the door, there he stood holding Bentley. I wish I had had my camera then. The wind had blown old Bentley off his chair and he was lying face down on the porch.

Pete is really a nice man, very outgoing, very personable, and not bad looking either. But this is just not working out for me, and I have to tell him--sooner rather than later, as they say. I think it's just still too soon after Vann's death for me to enjoy dating, if ever. I've been thinking all weekend how I'm going to tell him I don't want to see him anymore. Lord! I feel like a teenager.

How charming Bentley looks in his Santa hat and scarf! The color match couldn't be more perfect! Am glad to hear he's in from the wet weather as all beloved bears should be.

I can certainly understand what mixed feelings you must have about dating. I've not been in your situation but wonder if enough time will ever pass so you'd be comfortable dating again? Perhaps a casual friendship is the way to start now or later. Wishing for your head and heart to find peace about this.

Big hugs!

Hi Susan,I'm sure Pete would want you to be upfront with him.If your heart isn't ready then it is too soon, there is no limit on the time we grieve.By the way Bentley is adorable!!

On 11/28/2011, Debra said ...

Strike a deal with Pete--tell him honestly that you are not up for a romantic relationship but if he wants a friend, you can handle that (if you can). Then, tell him that once a month would be about as much as you could handle being friendly (and that would mean going to an expensive restaurant and then a concert or something! joking, well, not really.)

Seriously, I am sure he understands your position; having lost a spouse too. Vann's shoes are very big to fill. But, it's ultimately about you and not Pete so let him know that he is a swell guy but you have some healing to do before you can be a swell gal in return.

It wouldn't hurt to keep in touch with him.

On 11/28/2011, Annie said ...

Bentley is adorable. Good luck with the breakoff, at least you gave it a bit of a try. I don't think guys get casual friendships,it's either all the time or not at all with them.

On 11/28/2011, Sharon M. said ...

Susan - Pete does sound like someone who'd understand your misgivings. I'd probably feel the same as you - you tried it, it didn't feel right, too soon - if ever.

I've thought it would be nice to just have a male friend to go out to eat with occasionally, or to an occasional movie or theater performance. Just haven't had the courage to do any of that on my own. We live in such a "couples" society, and when we are no longer part of a couple, it really shrinks our world. BTW, tomorrow, November 29 would have been (WOULD HAVE BEEN) our 50th wedding anniversary. Not sure how I'll spend that day.

Bentley looks so cuddly and loveable - love him!

On 11/28/2011, Debby Messner said ...

I love Bentley. Better tie him to the porch when the wind dies down. Someone would have fun kidnapping him.
Sorry about your friend. Would he or you just consider companionship. Sounds like it wouldn't work for you. That would be nice for you though. Or tell him to look you up in another year. You still need to heal. Van must have been such a special man. (((((HUGS))))

Oooh, Susan, I do feel for your situation! I've never had an experience like this one. But my motto has always been that nothing beats communication. He would appreciate the honesty I'm sure. If it's too soon, it's too soon. I'm saying a prayer for you right now and wishing you the best!

Gotta Do This!

166562886188146181_zr8niTec_c

I love to browse through the Pinterest photos. There's so much creativity and prettiness in those pictures. And sometimes, like this morning, I find something that really grabs my attention. This altered puzzle is one of those somethings.

I haven't done any altered art in a long time, but I love to do it. I've done altered books, tags, boxes, and one round robin in which we did puzzle pieces. But I've never done an entire puzzle. Today or tomorrow, I'm going to find a small puzzle and start this. At least, that's my plan right now.

Andy, Ramey, and I had a great Black Friday. We went to the thrift store then to Cracker Barrel for late lunch. No malls or WalMarts for us. We're just not into doing battle with our fellow shoppers for a chance at one of the three $25 big-screen tvs or a few $1.98 towels. Since none of us owns any pepper spray, we'd never get the merchandise anyway.

We didn't find any really great treasures at the thrift store, but we had fun. I got Bentley a Santa hat, but I'm not sure it's going to fit him. I haven't tried it on him yet. I forget exactly what Ramey and Andy got.

As I do most Saturdays, I'm linking with Beverly's Pink Saturday blog party. That's another place to find excellent ideas of all kinds--from crafting to home dec to cooking and everything in between an all around. I suggest a visit.

Oh, and btw, today is my and Vann's 17th wedding anniversary. Happy anniversary, Boo. I love you and miss you.

Happy Anniversary, my friend! I believe with my whole heart that love never ends and can never be wasted.

What a great way to spend Black Friday, off the beaten track, indeed! I spent part of my day getting AMIL's Christmas decorations down from her attic, putting up her tree, and swapping the autumn leaf garland and decor on top of her breakfront for a holly garland, a Jim Shore Santa, and a tall Nutcracker! She's all about decorating the day after Thanksgiving.

Love the puzzle quilt and I can't wait to see Bentley in his new hat!

I'm off to visit Beverly's pink extravaganza.

Hugs!

Have you given thought to continuing the UFO challenge for another year for those of us who were slow, who got side-tracked, or had/have lots more UFOs that are still unfinished? Perhaps the check-in could be monthly instead of weekly so it would be easier for you?

If You Cook It, They Will Come

ThanksgivingfeastLeastwise that's the plan. An even dozen family members are scheduled to join me and the doggies for our Thanksgiving feast tomorrow.

I started cooking yesterday but didn't get much accomplished as I was nursing a particularly evil headache. A migraine that starts with the flickering in the peripheral vision of my left eye and proceed to visit the right side of my head with pounding pain. That's the third one of these I've had in two weeks. And I never have headaches--or hardly ever.

It was the headache, not the weather, that finally persuaded me to call Pete and beg off. He was very kind about the whole thing. I would have likely been upset if someone had broken a date with me, but Pete didn't seem to be. Very understanding, he was.

Well, anyway, I got the chicken for the dressing crock-potted yesteday. I'm doing the dressing the way my first MIL, Irene, did it. With the chicken in the dressing.

I'm also cooking a ham, cabbage, sweet potato casserole, french onion rice casserole, sour cream mashed potatoes, and brownies (Jesse always has to have brownies). My sisters are bringing salads and desserts, I think. We're also having yeast rolls, cranberry sauce,  gavy--oh, yeah, and ice cream to go with the brownies.

Think I went a little overboard? Well, I always do. There will be lots and lots of leftovers, I'm sure. So I can send everyone home with supper.

I'm out of here now. I need to be smelling stuff cooking.

Happy-thanksgiving-dressed up chihuahuas

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!
(The second dog from right is one of Skipper's ancestors who came over on the Mayflower--Great Granny Tabitha, I think he called her.)

Oh, so sorry about your migraines yesterday and in recent weeks. I get them, too, but infrequently I'm happy to say. I learned that if I could take one Codeine pill when I had the visual disturbance and then go to sleep, I could stop the migraine before it started. That was a wonderful discovery and at times I even left work if the visual disturbance started during a workday. Have you tried that? It's worth a try but I think you'd need a mega-pill to promptly take and not just aspirin, Tylenol or the like.

I'm glad Pete was understanding, too.

Your menu sounds scrumptious and you are going to be busy today and tomorrow morning. Is your recipe for the French onion rice casserole on the website here? If not, would you please post it after Thanksgiving?

We're dividing up cooking tasks so I'm making only the sweet potato casserole, the corn pudding, and a baked potato for DS2 who doesn't like sweet potatoes. Am also hard boiling 18 eggs, some of the eggs will go in the cornbread dressing DH is making, and the rest will be deviled. AMIL is doing the turkey, green bean casserole, a chocolate cake, a pumpkin pie, and a pecan pie. She loves to bake.

Love the Pilgrim dogs! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Hugs!

I'm sorry you've been getting those yukky headaches! I don't get migraines, but my daughter does & she says the only thing that helps her is sleep in a dark, quiet place. Yum to your dinner. I am taking a 20 minute break because I have my adopted senior ladies here 'helping' me bake. Do I REALLY need to translate that? LOL! Actually they are precious. I just could have done without company today. I admit, I tend to work better alone. Sorry your date had to be postponed. I bet there will be others! Pete sounds very sweet! And I believe MY doggy ancestor, Chief Woofandwag KNEW Skipper's Great Granny Tabitha! (Susan, you are a GLORIOUS NUT!!! LOL!) HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND ALL OF YOUR WONDERFUL FAMILY1 This crazy Houstonian LOVES you!

And to be honest, I'd take a thick Ghiradelli brownie over pie any day! :)

An Update from Sophie

Poochies

Good morning to SuSu's blogging buddies. She says tell you she doesn't have time to blog today. She has to get ready for our Thanksgiving feast. There's tornadoes coming. And she has another "date" with Pete tonight. She says she's thinking of asking Pete for a rain check so she won't have to go out in the tornado weather. It's supposed to get here about the same time Pete does.

Skipper is sorry if she cancels. He wants to play another tune for Pete on his blue toy. Me, I don't care. He kept her gone way too long last week and I had to give him a piece of my mind when they got back.

Now, Skipper and I are going to snuggle down in our pink chairs and wait for the tornadoes to come.

Little Red Featherweight

287948969894615580_M0YKyAKj_c

Look what I saw on Sharon's Pinterest Board. I have a black featherweight that Vann bought for me years ago--and I love it. But who could resist this red one. I want one. Where do I get one? And will I have to mortgage the house to get it? Probably a pricey piece, don't you think?

Thanks a zillion for all the comments on Date Night. I get the feeling that several of you are hopeless romantics. I like that. I also like all the encouragement and support. I love y'all.

I have plans to go out with Pete again on Tuesday evening, as I told you. But I might have to ask for a rain check. Severe, tornadoey weather is forecast for tomorrow night, and I don't care to be out and about in storms. We'll see.

This is going to be a busy, busy week--date or no date. The fam is coming for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. So I'll be planning, shopping, and cooking for the rest of the week. And I hope to have Bentley Bear finished and sitting on my front porch to greet everyone. I found him a great scarf at the thrift store and can't wait to wrap it around his furry neck.

After church yesterday, I spent the afternoon with Andy. We shopped for her a Christmas tree and ornaments for her Little Yellow House. While at Lowe's, I sprung for a new dishwasher (guess that's my Christmas present). I've been putting off buying a new one for a couple of years now. I knew mine was on it's last leg. I'm glad I made the purchase when I did. When I got home and opened mine to put away the clean dishes, my top shelf fell out. It is now hanging in there very precariously. I don't think I'll risk running this dishwasher again. My new one should be delivered this week.

OK. I'm going to get to getting now.

Congratulations on your new dish washer! What color/finish did you choose? May there be no delay in its delivery. We got a $105 refund from Lowe's when our new washer/dryer wasn't delivered on time.

I look forward to seeing Bentley Bear and his new scarf. Meanwhile, happy sewing and happy Thanksgiving cooking. I'll be fixing my part of the dinner on Thanksgiving morning: sweet potato casserole and Mary Lou's corn pudding. Yum!

Three HUGE cheers for red ANYTHING! I LOOOVE RED!!! I also love YOU, and it is so great to hear you sounding genuinely happy! Can't wait to see Bentley finished! And what's on your Thanksgiving menu? I need ALL new kitchen appliances but I DON'T need a dishwasher 'cause I never use them. My appliances are relatively new, yet they are what I jokingly call Chinese appliances. (My adorable landlady, Mei-Chin, is Chinese.) They are TINY. Really! The burners on the stove are SILLY small with only one semi-large burner for a wok. I don't USE a wok. Sigh. I also don't use those 3 hideously small burners. The fridge is awful. I'm sorry to report that ALL my bad language surfaces everytime I have to try & get something in the freezer. No ROOM for bigger appliances. So I'm STUCK. Anyway, I'm glad you got a new dishwasher! Hope the storms do not materialize & you can have your date Tuesday night! BIG HUGS!

You don't have to buy a little red featherweights ... you could decide to have yours painted. There were no original red featherweights (nor purple ones, nor British Racing Green ones). The only original colors are black, crackle black (the WW2 military version), "mint" (which is so light, it really looks white) and tan.

I have two featherweights and keep thinking about having one of them painted--just have to decide on a color ;-)

On 11/21/2011, Gael said ...

Hi Susan! Oh that bear will be sooo cute. You'll have to get him some cool sunglasses for a summer display! Maybe a beer in his hand? lol
Sophie is correct in that the Featherweights with color are painted. I bought a "white" one on eBay (long story with a happy ending) You can Goggle painted FWs, and there is an awesome guy who paints them. They "restoring" folks take everything off the FWs, and repaint them.
I once read a young lady's blog where she bought a FW really cheap, had a auto paint shop paint it!
Anyhoo, Happy Thanksgiving to you and Andy!

That is an awesome red machine!! Looks brand new.
I thought about you on your date night. Feels funny doesn't it...."dating."
I remember my first date after Dick passed away. It was 3 years when I received a phone call from an old high school beau.
We had a lot of fun together, but not a person to partner up with.
I now have a partner of 4 years. And we are blessed with being on the same page...most of the time!! hahaha

Date Night Went Well

287948969894563374_zQj5cpxU_c

I got dressed up, put on makeup, even polished my nails, and I was ready--a whole hour before the gentleman was due to arrive. Like a teenager waiting for her first date with the football captain.

Actually, I had just forgotten that it doesn't take me nearly as long these days to get ready to go out as it did when I was an actual teenager.

The gentleman (Pete is his name) turned out to be a very nice man. (He even brought me beautiful flowers.) We had dinner at a restaurant in Bessemer, Alabama (quite a drive) called The Bright Star. It's a local legend, and I had never been there. The food was awesome. I had blackened snapper and some kind of asparagus and mushrooms that was the best asparagus I've ever tasted. He had prime rib and baked potato (typical man, meat and potatoes).

The restaurant was crowded and we had somewhat of a wait for our food, and I didn't get back home until about 10:00, or maybe later. The phone started ringing almost as soon as I got in the door. It was Andy, checking to see if I was home. Oh how the tables have turned! I remember all those nights, waiting up for her till way way way past 10:00.

We learned a lot about each other and found that we have many things in common--and some things not. He''s a lifelong Republican (although he has recently switched to Independent; he now calls himself a recovering Republican). I lean considerably more to the left than he does--although he's certainly no far righty. His wife passed away three years ago; Vann has been gone two years. He's a Baptist; I'm a Methodist. He has a cat; I'm ruled by dogs.

Pete got along fine with Sophie and Skipper. Sophie gave him the old "What do you mean taking my mama out of the house and keeping her for so long routine." Bark bark bark bark bark bark bark! She does that to everyone that I leave the house with, when we return. Skipper just wanted to get in his lap and be petted--after he played a tune for Pete on his squeaky Blue Toy. (Pete asked if Skipper squeaks that toy all the time. I told him no, just when he wants to entertain a visitor.)

We found we had a lot in common, despite our differences. We're the same age. We know a lot of the same people. We're both Bama Crimson Tide fans. He saves aluminum pop tops for a lady in his church; so do I. We both like the mountains, the Gaithers, and an occasional white wine. Neither of us smokes. He doesn't play golf, and neither do I. We both like knockout roses and have lots of them in our yards. You see, I told you we learned a lot about each other. He's quite a talker.

The long and the short: He asked me to attend an Exchange Club dinner with him on Tuesday evening to hear my cousin Paige Parnell speak. Paige is running for District 45 (my district) state representative. And although Paige is a Democrat and Pete is a recovering-republican-turned-independent, he's helping Paige with her campaign. She's running against a pretty shady competitor who has an equally shady organization behind him. The election is Nov. 29.

Anyway, I seemed to have slipped off topic. Obviously, I like Pete well enough to go out with him again. But I can't see anything developing beyond a good friendship. I'm just not there.

Happy PINK SATURDAY, everyone.

So glad to hear that you had a good time on your date and that the evening was not a disaster. The doggies seem to like Pete and dogs are usally a good judge of kind people.

Who knows..... many a relationship started out with a simple friendship at the beginning. And he did ask you out a second time and you did accept. Enjoy yourself... you deserve it.

Thanks for the update! I had a chuckle at Andy's call to check on you! I thought about you several times last night and as I was getting into bed, but refrained from calling.

Sounds like a great start for a new friendship and that's the best beginning if anything more is in the stars for you two. Is Pete handy with tools and repairs? Does he have a good sense of humor? Both attributes would be nice in a new male friend.

Wishing your cousin success in her campaign!

Happy Pink Saturday!

Hugs!

What a wonderful post. I'm traveling Pink Saturday by links that end in 3, based on the last digit of my link (#123). I was working from the bottom of the list to shake it up a bit and am glad I got to stop by. I'm sorry to hear that your husband has passed. Glad to hear that you can and did go out (huge step). I think it's just fine not to be ready yet, but good to try. I thoroughly enjoyed the way you penned the post. It's like chatting with a friend. I enjoyed the likenesses and differences contrasts. Love your header page. Enjoyed my visit immensely. Take care, hugs! Thanks, Jenn

Now, the worst is over....you have met and can communicate...this is good....next is to just let things go in the direction they are meant to go....fate has a way of taking care of us and I think it often has help from those above who love us and still are taking care of us....there are special people - angels on earth - who come into our lives for a reason...usually something we don't understand when it's happening but later when we look back we can see why....some of these "angels" stay with us forever....some for just a little while....but, for sure, we always learn something from them.... so......as I said before....keep your heart open if only just a little bit and enjoy your new friend....

UFO Progress Report: Week 45

Floppy bear headMeet Bentley Bear--or I should say, meet Bentley Bear's head. I found all his pieces cut out and stored in a big bag in my sewing room closet. I remember him. He has been started for more than ten years. The intention was to set him on the front porch at Christmas time. Well, this year, Bentley is going to serve his life's purpose. I got all his pieces sewn together. (When he's finished, he will be about 3 ft. tall.) Now I just have to add his eyes, attach his head to his body, and stuff him. I'm going to the thrift store to see if I can find him a nice warm, colorful scarf, and maybe a knitted 'boggan hat, to wear to stay warm while he's on my front porch.

Floppy Bear jpg

But, right now I have to do some house cleaning and get ready for my date tonight. I couldn't sleep soundly last night for thinking of this. I hope it's not what one of my former bosses used to call a "boondoggle," which I think means something that probably shouldn't have been undertaken. It sort of reminds me of the word lollygag, which means doing something you shouldn't be doing instead of the thing you should  be doing--like blogging instead of cleaning house.

So I'm going to stop lollygagging and commence getting my house ready for my gentleman caller, a night which may or may not prove to be a boondoggle.

Y'all be sure to post your links below so we can see what UFOs you have been working on--or not working on if you've been lollygagging.

What a cute bear! He will look very welcoming on your front porch.

Good luck on the date!

On 11/18/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

Love your Bentley Bear and he'll add such charm to your porch decor at Christmastime. He'll certainly need a cozy wrap, even in Alabama!

When DS1 was just out of his baby bed and into his big boy bed, I made a "bear" rug from a pattern and fake fur. Bear was put beside DS1's bed so he'd have a soft landing should he roll overboard. The bear rug worked well for its intended purpose, but it also was a dear friend, a worthy adversary, and a tackle dummy by turns in the ensuing years.

Perhaps you should consider having a glass of wine to settle your nerves before you embark on this evening's adventure? Do enjoy yourself! Hope the word of the evening is "serendipity", an unexpected, fortuitous discovery you happen upon.

Hugs!

Thank God for Friendship

CrossThank you all for your wonderful dating advice. I really do feel a lot better after reading all your comments. All of you seem to understand the fear and uncertainty. Many of you have been there. Debra, I loved what you said about if I was worried about my tummy poking out, he was probably worried about his bald spot. I have thought a lot lately on how men ever get up the nerve to ask a woman out. Bless their little bald heads.

And many of you pointed out that if I don't go, I won't know--or something to that effect. And that, at the end of the day (as the politicians say), is why I agreed to go. I could never stand thinking that I might have missed something good through my own actions (or inactions).

So thank you all, my friends. I'm still nervous and not convinced this will be an awesome experience. But I'm open to the fact that it could be at least fun. And as one of you said, one can never have too many friends. Maybe he will be a new one.

Let me tell you about that cross now. My church has always put up and decorated a Chrismon tree in our sanctuary. This year, we're still doing that, but we're also decorating a tree with crosses for the Family Life Center. Each person/family will donate a cross with his/her/their name on it. This is mine.

Cross detailI found the beaded/wire cross at a local Christmas shop and added the hanging doodads (cross, key, name tag). I just went to scrounging around in my containers of collected this-and-thats and found stuff that would work. Quick & Easy.

Remember that tomorrow is UFO Progress Report Day. I have some progress to report this time--on a UFO I haven't talked about  before. I found him yesterday in the closet of my sewing room while scrounging for this-and-thats.

I'm so glad you're up for whatever delight tomorrow night holds! Have fun!

The pearl cross is lovely and the items you found to attach to it are the perfect touches needed to make it more beautiful. Well done!

So I'm not the only one who is still finding UFOs! That is reassuring and I look forward to seeing your newly found UFO.

I Don't Think I Was Meant to Be a Golden Girl

GoldenGirls1

All right. The news is out, so I guess I'll blog it: I have a date. Friday night, I'm going out to dinner with a man I've never met. My sweet cousin (who, among other talents, is a matchmaker) has "fixed me up."

I have so many mixed feelings about the whole thing. Mostly leaning toward the negative. I've talked with the fellow a couple of times by phone and he seems very nice, which my cousin says he is. But, I don't know. At this stage of my life, I just have so many more things that I'd rather turn my attention to. I haven't dated in a long time, true. But I do remember that dating, relationships, etc., take a fair amount of attention and work and time--time and effort I just feel like I'd rather be devoting to something like quilting or reading--something where I don't have to put on makeup, worry about how I'm dressed, wonder if my stomach is poking out, think of stuff to talk about.

Am I just old?

I truly don't know why I agreed to do this. For one thing, my cousin can be very persuasive, so I agreed for her to give him my phone number. Then after he called a couple of times asking me out, I really didn't want to disappoint him. And then there's this feeling of obligation to "get on with my life." None of that makes any sense now, though. It's my life, after all. If I'd rather quilt than date, then that's what I should do. If I'd rather read a book than get gussied up and do a night on the town, it's my business.

And then there's Vann. It has been barely two years since he passed away, and sometimes I feel like it was just yesterday. Andy said she felt like he would approve. I said sure he would approve of me dating--IF he could pick the date, the place we go, the day and time, what I wear, what time I get home. (My Vann did like to be in control.)

Well, at least nobody can say I'm going into this with high expectations. I don't expect to enjoy it or ever do it again. So if I have a good time and he asks me out again, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Meanwhile, just call me Blanche Deveraux. No, no. Better make that Sophia Patrillo.

I'm so glad you're going Susan - and either it will be great and you'll do it again or it won't and that will be an end of it - but at least you will have dipped your toe in the water! I do hope that you are very pleasantly surprised!!!

Firstly, your cousin loves you and has your best interest at heart. Secondly, it is just A date. Thirdly, this is the thing I think about most if my husband, 11 years older, predeceased me, "would I have to date again?"

Good luck, and just think of all the books you can talk about.

I hope it works out for you in a friendship way. It's nice to have a man to do some things with. Makes us feel more feminine in a way. AND if he's good at fixin' stuff that's a bonus!!

Hi Blanche - I mean Sophia,
I am glad you are going and it IS a big step. I sure like your attitude about all of it. You never know what can happen. Wonderful things can happen and if they don't you will continue to live your full life. Much to my surprise, my life changed dramaticlly a year and a half ago. I had not dated in 20 years and now I share my time with a wonderful man. We take a day at a time. He would like to marry, but I do not know if I can ever take that step. By the way, I am 72! Yes, it is difficult to find the time to do everything we think we can do, but you will know if it is worth the change in the schedule that you have become accustomed to. Good Luck. We will be thinking about you with healthy postitive energy.

On 11/16/2011, Nancy said ...

Susan, I do kind of know where your coming from...I have been married for 43 year to the only guy I ever dated and I know without a doubt that if anything happens to him, I will NEVER remarry. I won't even date! BUT...my issue is that I have a terminal illness that is at this time at a plateau. It has been for several years. Besides, I wouldn't wish me on anyone at this stage in my life, LOL.
Anyway, please don't start out the evening planning to 'not enjoy yourself'. Even if you don't go again, at least relax, think positive and you may be surprised. You just might have a really nice time. Even if you do, it doesn't mean you are obligated to go again if you don't wish to. Enjoy, enjoy!!! Hugs...

On 11/16/2011, Laurel said ...

Hi....I know EXACTLY how you feel....and was in your place 7 years ago.....it took over a month of persistant telephone calls before I finally said I would go to lunch on a Sunday afternoon...thinking....if I go and get it over with he will leave me alone....What a surprise to have a nice time with a very sweet man whose company I enjoyed that day and have now for the past 7 years.....I know "my Jack" would be pleased that I am not alone in the world and - although if I had the choice I would take Jack back in a minute - I am happy in my new life.... Eloy is from South America and at the beginning I said I was having "A menopausal Latin love affair" but it has gone beyond that.... Keep your heart open - even if just a little - you might be surprised at the feelings that creep in....Good Luck!

Hi Blanche, er ... Sophia!

I'll add my voice to those who are glad you're going out. Hey, it may be fun and the food will be good - and you're not cooking it. A plus! Hope you can relax and be your delightful self. If it's the beginning of something more, okay, if not, okay. You already know you have lots of things to do that you enjoy doing at home while in your jammies.

As is said in The Hobbit, "The greatest adventure is what lies ahead." I'm proud of your bravery and sense of adventure.

You go, girl!

There's so little I can add that has not been said (and certainly better than I can say it) but at least let me say that it really ISN'T the chances we TAKE as much as the chances we IGNORE which we end up regretting. On 11/16/2011, Ann Marie said ...

When my mom and dad divorced.......years ago. My dad said he would never remarry. Well after 3 or 4 years, he missed having someone around to talk to, he missed wanting to go out to dinner with someone, anyone, instead of by himself all the time, he missed going to the movies with someone, someone that he could talk about the movie afterwards. So he started dating. To fill just those voids. After a while seeing Nancy, who they got along great, always had things to talk about, had a lot of things in common, they started truly dating, and he was having feelings. A few years later they remarried. They have traveled all over the world, globe trotting I call it. Yes they got married too. When I questioned him about it one day, about his remark he would NEVER get remarried...........his answer was " Never say Never, you don't know what life has in store for you" Apparently the universe knew these two people needed each other, more than they knew it themselves. Keep an open mind, and don't worry about what others think about your makeup, your clothes, or if your stomach is sticking out. Be happy and be yourself. Life is too short not to enjoy the journey.

On 11/16/2011, Karen said ...

Susan: I hope you do have a good time despite your misgivings. I have been divorced for 11 years and it's been 3 years since the last boyfriend finally left my life. In many ways, I think I'm completely done with men, but sometimes I think it would be nice to have someone besides the cats to share things with. So, even if you aren't sure if you're ready, this is your chance to see if you might be ready after all. It's just dinner--it's not forever. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and you might find out that you are ready after all. And if you are not ready, that's OK, too.

Wow -- lots of nice, great comments on this. I, too, am of the mindset that a relationship at this stage of my life would take too much time and energy and I totally prefer to be myself doing what I want to do and not answering to anybody or even having to talk to anybody! Work is enough interaction for me and my home time is my time. But -- I anxiously await to hear how your evening went and hope, if nothing else, that you totally enjoy it, even if going down that road is not what you choose to do and I applaud you for testing the waters.

One thing I learned while dating (between marriages) is that it is just as difficult for a man to ask for a date at (insert age) as it is at 16. He's asked you because he wants to show you a good time. He's putting himself on the line for your approval. If you are worrying about your stomach sticking out, he's probably worrying about his bald spot shining too much.

You really can't have too many friends; even of the male persuasion!
Try to be gentle on yourself and on him.

November Quilters Guild

Guild1

Members turned in 49 Autumn Pinwheels blocks (above) for the block of the month drawing yesterday--and Lisa A. won them. We were all really happy. Lisa just lost her dad, with whom she was extremely close. She needed some cheer.

Guild5Our speaker was Lillis Taylor (left), a young woman who has recently become a member of our guild. Lillis has lived in many parts of the world, but is a Birmingham native. She talked about her life as an artist and how that led her to quilting. She was very interesting--and just too cute.

Our clotheslines were full for Show & Tell. Everyone has been busy, busy. I took my coloring bags to show and got lots of interest from other members who want to make them for family members and charity causes. I emailed some directions when I got back home. I'd be happy to email them to anyone who is interested.

Below are a few of the other beauties that were featured on the Show-&-Tell clothesline yesterday.

Thanks to all of you for sending me well wishes. My back is much better. The allergies are still giving me fits, and the meds keep me a little blicky, but, all in all, this week is turning out much better than last.

I'm still working on reading SK's 11/22/63. Not quite halfway through. It's a long one, almost 900 pages. But it's really really good. And I haven't even got to the title date yet.

The quilts are so pretty. I love the purses too!

I read some of the reviews of the book 11/22/63 that you had linked to in your post and thought that they made me want to read the book. I noticed that you referred to the book as 9/22/63 in your post. I was curious if that was a typo or if your were referring to the date where you are half way through the book?

Thanks for sharing your quilts, ideas, books with us. I love reading your blog. I read it almost everyday during my lunch break at work. I don't always comment but I do enjoy reading.

Wonderful blocks, quilts, and purses!! I love the colors and the imaginations that have been used! Applause to all!!

Glad to hear you're a bit better and that this week is better than last week.

Does anyone know someone in Mississippi who needs a wall clock for Christmas? The Signals catalog has the cutest clock that counts the time as one mississippi, two mississippi, etc all the way around to fifty-nine mississippi, sixty mississippi!!

Hugs!

Oooooh! I always really LOVE seeing the gorgeous quilted pieces! Your crayon bags ROCK! I didn't comment on them (I don't THINK I did) because I was dodging storms. No, not INSIDE! Just needed to unplug the computer! LOL! Anyway, they are brilliant! The lil' speaker looks so cute! I WANT her outfit! Of course, at MY size, I believe it would look a LOT LESS cute on ME. Hope by day's end you feel TONS better!

Susan, I got the audio on the 8th because I had some Audible credits, but this is one I really want to 'read'. I'll listen to the audio after I have finished it so that I know what it going to happen and it won't interrupt my sewing.
My pre-ordered copy is sitting in my PO box right now and it will probably stay there until tomorrow.
It was cleaning day at church today so we spent our morning there. Besides, I'm in the middle of "Starvation Heights", a true crime story by Greg Olsen about Dr. Linda Hazzard. A chilling story that has been at times hard to read, but such a page turner that I haven't been able to put it down. Have you read it?
As soon as I finish Starvation Heights, I plan to start "11/22/63". I did listen to the first chapter and really liked the direction it was going so I'm looking forward to it. Let me know what you think of it after you get into it a ways.
I find that I enjoy the very same books and authors that you do so I know I can always rely on your reviews. Enjoy your day of reading, time well spent. Hugs...

UFO PROGRESS REPORT: Week 45

UFO2

UFO1

What a week! I haven't got much done this week due to allergies and back problems. I did quilt a little more on the "Blackberry Creek" quilt. And although they aren't UFOs, I got two crayons bags made. I have two more cut out.

Crayon Bags

Attention UFO Busters: Please add you link below.

Now I have to go lie down.

Love the quilting on Blackberry Creek and every time I see it, I'm eager to start my version of those charming cottage blocks.

The crayon bags are just too cute!

I have no UFO progress to report but hope to soon.

Hope you're feeling better and continue to feel better each day.

Hi Susan, I hoe your back is better soon. I love the crayon bags. A clever idea for gifts. I can't wait to see your Blackberry Creek quilt finished. I gave up hand quilting and machine quilt. It is way too time consuming.
Wishing your better days ahead.

Post Haste, Indeed!

Postacard

Never count our post office out. Look what was in my mailbox this week, mailed way back in 2005. It's a beautiful fabric postcard, mailed from Mary in the U.K., and unusually fresh and clean to have spent the last six years crossing the Atlantic and getting to Alabama.

Back in 2005, I was into the fabric postcard craze big time. I made and swapped hundreds of these mailable quilts. It was so fun, but I finally decided I'd had enough--after spending probably hundreds of dollars on postage.

Unfortunately I don't remember Mary. There is no return address, no email address, no way to get in touch with her and let her know that the beautiful card finally arrived. She has probably forgot all about it anyway. But I'll treasure it. One of these days, I'll have to blog about some of the hundreds of lovely fabric postcards I received when I was doing this.

After running errands yesterday, I stopped by Andy's house. She was home from work, also sick with allergies, so I decided to take the opportunity to visit my grandkitties. They, however, were still not up for visiting, although much calmed down from the night before. All they wanted to do was snuggle up next to Jesse.

Jesse and Andy named the little boy Billy Boots and will call him Boots. The little girl still doesn't have an official name.

After returning home, I had what can only be described as a sinking spell. Not unusual; I have them regularly. It's like my energy just drains away and I can no longer function except to lie on the couch. This time though, I was also very drowsy. That part was a little unusual, although not unheard of. I'm blaming it all on the allergies and fibro. I feel a little more energetic this morning, but now my back has the miseries. I won't take a muscle relaxer because I have too much to do today to risk lethargy that the MRs sometimes cause. So I think I'll have a nice hot bath instead.

Have a great Thursday, everyone. And remember that tomorrow is UFO Progress Report Day.

Goodness! It's a wonder that lovely blue fabric postcard arrived at your house at all. Don't you wonder where on earth it's been all this time?

Hope you and Andy are both quickly on the mend from your annoying miseries. Meanwhile, stay cozy ... and perhaps have hot tea or Theraflu?

It's gone from a beautiful autumn day to cold and rainy so I think a cup of hot tea will be next on my list.

Hugs!

WOW! Neither rain nor snow nor nearly 6 years of NOT being delivered ...! It's a lovely postcard! Worth the wait! The kitty-children? I want so MUCH to play with them! Rest today, my lil' friend! I am having a 'not TOO bad' Lupus flare, but it still robs my energy. And it kicks the fibro into gear, so I GET what you're going through! LOVE YOU & I say do ONLY what YOU feel like doing!

Baby Cats, Bald Dog

390057_2141477732638_1117020633_31889429_463334805_n

Say hello to my new grandkitties. They don't have names yet, but we've been calling the little calico Sister. The black one with the white blaze and white chin is a boy.

I didn't take this picture. Last night's visit didn't go too well. Andy came in the front door with the kittens in a box and Skipper and Sophie went wild--barking and jumping and trying to get into the box to see the kitties. "Sister" went wild as well. She hissed and spit and looked wild-eyed. If you put your hand near her to try to calm her, those tiny little needle claws came out in a speed-of-light swipe. After a few minutes of bedlam, Andy gathered her box of kitties and took them home.

This photo is one that Andy took after she got them home and calmed "Sister" down. The little boy cat was cool. "Dogs? What dogs?"

I am fighting allergies this week. My eyes feel like they're filled with itching powder and my vision keeps blurring up. I'm sneezing and coughing and just generally feeling bad. I took an allergy pill just now. Hoping it will help.

I worked on my crayon bags yesterday while Skipper and Sophie were at the groomer. My quilting bee is making them to give to a women/children shelter in Birmingham. We're supposed to make two each, but I have four cut out and two sewn up. I'll show them maybe tomorrow or soon.

Have you ever gone for a hair cut and said "Ooops!" when you looked in the mirror afterwards? Well Sophie got one of those kind yesterday. I always tell them to cut her short, so that's what I said yesterday. But Haley has cut her only one time before and I guess she needed further instruction on just what I meant by "short." She took it to mean "almost clean shaven. But as I always tell myself when I suffer a haircut catastrophe, "It'll grow back," I said to Sophie. "Easy for you to say," she answered.

I would show you a picture, but Sophie absolutely refuses to be photographed until she is less naked.

if you put perfume on a cat's nose before bringing in a new animal, bedlam wont happen. everything smells the same to the cat and it confuses them. we have used this for years after being told of it by a vet.

What adorable little grandkitties you have! The boy cat looks like he'd be called Cinder or Smudge or Bro!! Sister is a sweetie.

Since we have 2 cats, mother and son, I feel free to add this:
"The trouble with a kitten's that
All too soon it becomes a cat!"
- Ogden Nash (I think)

Great information, Marolyn! Thanks for sharing that tip!

Hope you feel lots better soon. I recommend Theraflu with some honey or sugar in it.

Hugs!

I don't know about YOU, but if I had MY way, I'd OUTLAW all this feeling bad garbage! It gets in the way of what I want to DO! Finally, tell Ms. Sophie that Aunty Kai thinks she'd look beautiful even if she had ZERO hair!

Look What I Won!

6a00e54fac40428834015392a15cc3970b-400wi

I love owls, and this one is so fine. So I entered Kay Ellen's blog drawing, and then pretty much forgot about it. This morning I opened an email from her telling me I had won. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Kay. I really love the owl. And I REALLY love your blog.

If you aren't familiar with Kay's blog, Kay Ellen Design, her beautiful sense of style and luscious photography, I suggest a visit right now.

And might I add that I'm glad somebody won something. Bama lost that game last night to the LS and U Tigers, and there was no call for it. Two missed field goals spelled the Tide's doom. Well, and LSU played well too. But still...

Gonna Give Those Tigers Pachydermatitis!

Today the No. 1 rated LSU Tigers roll into Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on the No. 2 Bama Crimson Tide. You can probably guess who I'll be cheering for. But the game doesn't start until 7:00 p.m., so I have plenty of time (and so do you) to visit Beverly's Pink Saturday blog party.

After that, I think I'll wash the back porch. I've been planning to do that ever since Steve cleaned up the muddy mess that was Skipper's China-digging project. Now for a pastime, Skipper stands under trees in the backyard and barks at squirrels, which gets Sophie doing the same, which gets me pulling out my hair thinking our fractious neighbor will lodge a complaint. Such an exciting life I have.

After porch cleaning, if I have a speck of energy left, I'll do some sewing.

Alabama-dm

ROLL TIDE!

Cheers for your ambitious plan to clean the porch. I'm stove up with a left low back ache at upper hip level (too low for kidneys) and so far the Aleve hasn't helped much at all. Bother!

If your delicate and grumpy neighbor doesn't like the barking, he can invest in ear plugs or go rent somewhere else! You're the homeOWNER and are staying put with your furry kids.

ROLL TIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
