Bring Back J.J.

Hotchner-and-jj_500x333
Hotch and J.J.

Rarely have I ever got so involved in a tv show that I cry when a character leaves. The last time I remember this happening was about 1968 when my favorite character in the soap "Edge of Night" was killed in a plane crash. I cried for three days.

Well, it happened again last night--on "Criminal Minds." This to me is a high quality production among all the trash and stupidity on television. The acting, writing, sets, lighting--it's all super.

One character, Jennifer Jareau (J.J.) played by A.J. Cook is the heart and soul of the BAU team on the show. She's the go-to gal for comfort and sympathy for victims and victims' families. Her greatest quality is empathy. Plus A.J. Cook is a great little actress. (Last week's episode in which she talked with serial killed Billy Fynn regarding fear of monsters proved that beyond a doubt). Plus, the BAU team members love her as a sister.

So last night, BAU Director Strauss informed J.J. that she must take a promotion and leave the BAU team. J.J. can't refuse to take the promotion and Hotch (J.J.'s boss) can't refuse to let her go. BUMMER! Viewers were led to believe that last night's episode would be her last. We were given a glimmer of hope, however, when Hotch told J.J. that he wasn't going to replace her, that he hoped he could get her back. I know thousands of CM fans hope the same.

If you're a "Criminal Minds" fan and you agree that letting J.J. go hurts the show (and, fictionally speaking, breaks the hearts of all her team members), please let CBS know. I already have.

And if you have never watched this show and don't know what I'm talking about, I'm sorry to go on about this. But sometimes we just have to speak up when we see wrongs being committed. And this is wrong.

Hey Susan! I watched the show last night and actually thought "I bet Susan is crying". I like the show also but don't catch it every week. Probably watch more of the old ones...I cried when Hill Street Blues ended!

Bring Back JJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm still in mourning for all of the NUMB3RS cast and the lovely Craftsman house Jud Hirsh got to live in. We didn't even get to say good-bye. Sigh!

Hugs!

Amen, amen and amen! I'm headed over to CBS. I thought of you so many times while watching this phenomenal show. It is the only fall show I have ANY interest in. And it is quality TV. Without JJ, who will bring on the empathy?

Rednesday in the Kitchen

Red1

Thanks to those of you who agreed to take part in The 2nd Annual Yellow House Virtual Quilting Retreat. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, read yesterday's post. There's room for lots more to join.) More information will be forthcoming.

I wish I could say my cold is all gone now. I can't. I try to ignore it, and sometimes I can. Actually I am better--except for those times when I try to cough up my toenails. That's a little bothersome, but the decongestants and Thera-Flu help. Have y'all ever had any of that Thera-Flu stuff? It's a very vile tasting concoction, but it sure helps the coughing. Tastes like what I would imagine a witch's brew would taste like. If I read the ingredients, I bet it will list eye of newt horn of toad.

Today, I'm linking to Sue's Rednesday blog party. I love Rednesday. I've come to the color red late in life, and I'm making up for lost time. I can't seem to get enough of it.

Cherry World 1

HAPPY REDNESDAY TO ALL MY BLOGGING FRIENDS.

Glad you're feeling some better!!

Have I got news for you - add sugar to the vile Theraflu. That's what makes the lemon flavor palatable for me. When I'm feeling totally cruddy from respiratory germs, Theraflu with sugar is my go-to remedy.

You want to talk about vile. I thought the old Cepastat sore throat spray tasted like a dentist's office, old magazines and all. YUCK!

I'm looking forward to more information about the virtual retreat. Shall we all sip some special tea?

Love the red!!

Hugs!

Oh no! I'm so sorry you're feeling poorly! You cracked me up with the toenail and eye of newt stuff - I'm pretty sure a sense of humor means you've turned the corner on the bug. ;)

I used to get colds all the time and they would go into my chest and I'd get bronchitis - I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but ever since my doctor had me start taking Vitamin D, I haven't gotten sick. WAHOO!

Take care, hope you're feeling better soon!

Red is my second favorite color, I wear it a lot and our bedroom is decorated in brick red and sage green.

I'm with you on the Thera-Flu, it is vile tasting, plus you drink it HOT, which makes it more repulsive. I bet there is some batwing powder along with that eye of newt! Hope your cold flees soon.

Hi Susan :) I've just spent a bit of time catching up with you my dear. I'm sorry you've been having so many health issues and discomforts. I know only one other person who suffers from the ugly Fibro; but from her, I know it can make life quite miserable. You may also remember that my Husband suffers from a chronic illness and his journey has been extremely difficult, so I somewhat understand what it's like for you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I'm so thankful that the 1st Anniv of Vann's entrance into eternity is behind you ... it also means all the "firsts" are behind you as well. I know how difficult they can all be; but I imagine the love of your life would be etremely proud of the way you have made your way thru it all!!! He's always with you my dear and one day you'll be reunied in the most glorious places of them all :)

I've been MIA because I was diagnosed with Triple Negative (nasty kind) of Breast Cancer back in July and just a few short weeks ago advanced to Stave IV when we learned it had moved to my brain. I wanted you to know because my Husband and I truly believe in the "power of prayer," so I'm here to ask you for yours :) Thanking you in advance and God Bless :)

2nd Annual Yellow House Quilting Retreat

Retreat

For the past several years my quilting bee group has held an October quilting retreat. This year, we weren't able to come up with the minimum 12 attendees that the facility requires. So the manager caved to my whining and said they'd let the 8 of us who had signed up come. Trouble was, I had miscounted; we didn't have 8 signed up, we had only 7. I was too ashamed to whine anymore, and I don't think it would have done any good anyway; so we had to cancel.

I'll miss being with everyone at bee retreat this year; but I'm not letting this bump in the road spoil my fun. I'm going to hold the retreat anyway--right here at home in my sewing room, just me and the dogs.

This will actually be the second time I've held my own private quilting retreat. I mean officially, when everyone knew I had blocked the time off for me and would not be coming out of the sewing room for silly things like cooking, cleaning, running errands, etc.

I don't recall the exact date of the first one. I do remember that it was after Vann was diagnosed but before the battle got all consuming. He was still feeling good and getting on with life. I told him that I needed a sewing break and explained what I had planned--a private weekend sewing retreat. Vann enthusiastically agreed.

I have plenty of projects to work on at this year's Yellow House Retreat, namely the ones I started at the bee retreat last year and have never finished.

OR MY BUNNY QUILT

OR THIS PILE OF STUFF

As you can see, I have a great many projects that I have started and not completed, so I won't lack for work. Oh yeah, there are also a couple of baby quilts I have to finish--SOON!

If you'd like to join me in The 2nd Annual Yellow House Quilting Retreat, just let me know and we'll make it a virtual retreat. I'll post a link to your blog if you  have one, and we can share photos and information about what we're doing throughout the retreat. The dates are Monday, October 11 through Thursday, October 14.

I'll create a button for the retreat that you can post on your blog if you care to. But right now, I have to go grocery shopping. I've put it off as long as I can.

What a great idea, Susie! I'd love to join in! Right now I have only one thing that cannot be rescheduled and that's the afternoon of the 14th.

More than a year ago when I joined in Pat Sloan's Orange Challenge virtual retreat I accomplished more in those 3 days than I dreamed I could, considering my limited spoon count. My completed project was smaller than the rest and became my Halloween wall hanging, but I was more than delighted with it.

What I'd LOVE to make progress on is a quilt for DS1 who designed the block 13 years ago and has been waiting ever since. So far, only 1 block has been made. I think I can, I think I can!

Hope you're feeling lots better.

Hugs!

Sick Woman Down

QuiltIt's a good thing I preposted Friday's and Saturday's blog entries or I probably wouldn't have got them done. I've been in bed or on the couch all weekend with a terrible cold. I remember about this time last year I had swine flu or bird flu or one of those beastly flus. But I don't think this is flu since I don't seem to have had any fever. All the other symptoms are present though--especially coughing and nose-blowing and all that stuff one doesn't talk about in mixed company.

Andy came yesterday and stocked me up on meds, juice, chicken noodle soup, and even chocolate ice cream. So I'm good to stay in at least for today.

I hope after today I'll begin to feel better--much better. This week must be devoted to getting my house ready to host my quilting bee next Monday. Another day or two is all I can afford to devote to being sick. Sorry, crud. You're just going to have to move on down the road and leave me alone now.

Well bless your heart, nose, throat, lungs, and other parts, honey! Cheers that Andy has you stocked up on the sicko necessities, including the very therapeutic chicken soup.

As others have said, rest, and enjoy the required down time with good music or movies and doze off as you need to.

I lost my voice Friday but it was back to normal first thing Saturday. Go figure. I still have the sniffles and am disgustingly tired.

Rain today! Thanks be to God!

Get well hugs!

Happy Sunday to you, too!

Hope your weather has cooled off as ours has - at last!

Those are yummy and lovely items in the give-aways but my house is overflowing already so I'd better not enter!

Just this week I unearthed a box with depression glass plates and cups that were my Grandma's so I put them with the plates I found last year. I have 4 patterns and each color is a defferent pattern: pink, two shades of green, and yellow. The cups match one green pattern and the lovely almost square yellow plates. I was astonished to count the pink plates - 20! I know these were used to host the Garden Club ladies!

Hugs!

I think by their next drawings, tho', I should feel okay getting in on the fun. (And all THREE of those are GORGEOUS giveaways! That pink cup & saucer is ESPECIALLY awesome!) Hope you are having a beautiful & relaxed Sunday! GUESS WHAT? We are FINALLY going to cool off a bit here in Houston this week! HAPPY, HAPPY KAI!

A Silk Purse From a Sow's Ear

60422_149299735107767_103082953062779_206309_4935278_n

I spent most of yesterday repairing and painting the corner cabinet that I bought a little while back. It's not the one above. I'm not sure where that picture came from, but it was on my desktop, and I love it. It's very inspiring and keeps me going working on my cabinet.

I'm usually very pleased with purchases that I make. I don't buy impulsively or in haste. But yesterday, when I began work on my cabinet, I had regrets that I had bought it. It needed repair, which I did, and painting was absolutely necessary. The inside of the cabinet had been painted black. And even the white outside was a little more than shabby chic--it was more like grungy grief. The bottom compartment looked like someone had shoveled dirt into it. So before I could do anything, I had to give the whole thing a good cleaning.

None of these faults were hidden. I could have seen them if I had looked closely. I think I was focusing too much on the table that I bought at the same time. I was so excited about it, I failed to take a good look at the cabinet.

But I'll just keep looking at that picture above to stay inspired and keep painting. Skipper stays right beside me while I paint. Yesterday afternoon, both of us were pretty much covered with antique white paint when we were finished. I got most of it off us, but we're going to have to put at least one more coat on the cabinet, so we'll probably get ourselves painted again too. Sophie stays clear of the mess.

My cold and sore throat are still with me. It turns out that we all caught colds at the beach. Poor Andy has to go to work every day with hers. At least Jesse and I can hang out at home and be miserable.

Watched season premieres of "CSI" and "Fringe" last night. Both were pretty good, but neither measured up to the excitement and quality of the "Criminal Minds" episode. In my opinion, "CM" is the best thing going on tv right now.

We've had to cancel our bee quilting retreat. Not enough people could make it to reach the minimum number required. I'm disappointed, but we'll try again later and see if we can get enough.

I still don't have everything put back in place that got moved for the carpet cleaners. So that's my goal today. And if there's enough spoons left, I might put that next coat of paint on my cabinet.

NOTE TO VICKIE L.: If you will send me your email address, I'd like to answer your comment on my post about fibromyalgia. Your comment didn't link to your email or to a blog. My email address is suscleve@aol.com

I look forward to seeing your new cabinet when you've finished resurrecting it to a happy, loved appearance. I think you'll feel it smiling when you fill it with pretty things!

My spoons have been in very short supply this week and it's annoying the stew out of me. I'd be happy to just veg in front of the TV. This morning I made a mess emptying a drawer so have to deal with that.

I'm getting a sore throat, too, so will join you and Jesse if you don't mind.

Bummer about the quilt retreat but hope when it is rescheduled, many people can come and you have an abundance of spoons.

Hugs!

I'm sooooo miserably behind answering blogs, so this once I will beg forgiveness for answering bits and pieces of your last posts all at once. First, I'm so glad Skipper is recuperating! He's so cute & you KNOW I think Sophie is PERFECT! Speaking of perfect, YUMMY PERFECTION is how I'd describe that handsome young man. (Yeah, I'm OLD, & blind in ONE eye. But I'm not TOTALLY blind! LOL!) Your beach time looked wonderful! And you are 100% right - Andy is a beauty! As for the cabinet, you can DO it! Take your time. There's no Cabinet Monster to spring out & terrorize you if you don't get it all done quickly! It's going to be gorgeous when you finish it! LOVE YOU!

I'm sorry you're not feeling well. I was thinking about you while I was riveted to my seat watching Criminal Minds the other night. Wasn't it great? There isn't another show I'm really interested in but that one. That show I will get things done and my shower and be waiting when it starts. Most of the rest of TV is garbage. I wouldn't watch reality TV if someone paid me to.

A Big Old Moon and Billy Flynn

40480246.ze2oGbfW.harvest_moon

Did you see that Harvest Moon last night?

Actually this one is a Super Harvest Moon, the first one to occur in 20 years. That's when the full moon of September falls on the day of the Autumnal Equinox. On such a day, the full moon is rising at the same time the sun is setting. This, according to my sources, produces a unique twilight in which the entire sky is illuminated.

I didn't know all this last evening as my sister Ramey and I were driving back from Birmingham. I only knew that the evening was beautiful and the rising full moon was a show stopper.

If you missed the view last night, don't worry. This Super Harvest Moon will put on a show all week, producing a phenomenon known as “moon illusion." What appears to be an abnormally large moon is actually an optical illusion resulting from the moon's lower than usual position in the sky. At least that's what NASA claims. I just like to enjoy the view.

***

I have come down with a cold. Andy caught one while we were at the beach--came down with it the last night we were there. I thought I had escaped that old bug, but it seems I caught it too.

4750 I hope all "Criminal Minds" fans caught last night's season opener in which the evil Prince of Darkness Billy Flynn, perpetrator of a decades-long killing spree, is brought down by two girls, Special Agent Jennifer Jerau (J.J.) and Detective Spicer's young daughter Ellie, whom Billy has kidnapped.

J.J. was clearly the star of this episode, although Morgan had his moments too. The climactic scene where J.J. talks to Billy over the emergency broadcast system was actually a tear-jerker for me. It pointed out how the actions of Billy's demented mother not only destroyed Billy's life but also the lives of many other innocent people. When Billy asks Morgan if Morgan thinks Billy will get a second chance (after his death), my heart broke for him. For all the things that could have been. An example of just what horrible consequences child abuse can have.

And Billy's teeth--did you get a load of them. I couldn't stop looking at them. Eeeeew!

Good episode--but not for the faint of heart. The preview tells us that J.J. will be leaving next week. Although her job is not one for a young wife and mother, I still will not want to see her go. And I know the team will miss her. (Yes, people, I know this is fiction. But don't you know about what Coleridge called "the willing suspension of disbelief"?)

All right, I'm going downstairs now to put my house back in order after disassembling everything for the carpet cleaners yesterday. The carpet is finally dry--well mostly. Happy First Full Day of Autumn, everyone. Be sure to check out that moon tonight.

I too am a fan.Criminal minds is one of the best things TV is doing right now and yes belief is suspended for that hour and they become friends.
Here on Cape Cod the moon over the bay was an amazing sight and yes I will look forward to a week of the Harvest Moon.
Take care and keep blogging.

On 09/23/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

The moon is astonishing here, too. I didn't realize that the sun's position played a part. Interesting!

Criminal Minds was a thriller all right and Tim Curry was creepy to the max. I was in tears when JJ said that is was all right to be scared of monsters but it was not all right to become a monster and that so many citizens were shown hearing her words. I don't want JJ to leave either.

Have some good soup even if the air conditioning is still on in your house as it is here. Soup will help your cold. Be good to you as you deal with your cold symptoms and get over it.

Wishing you well! Hugs ...

I had to stay off your blog until I watched it. And I just finished (It's 10:30 am, told you it had to be in the daylight)! I really hate that's JJ's leaving...I even signed the petition to CBS to keep her...guess it didn't work! But I'll keep watching (in the daytime) 'cause I love this show!

Blessed Mabon

   Autumnal-equinox-ernestine-grindal

The skies they were ashen and sober;

The leaves they were withering and sere;

Hello Lady Autumn. You're here at last. This is the day I look forward to all through summer--the first day of autumn, the equinox, Mabon. The doorway to October. I love it!

I love all the sights, smells, sounds, colors, and sensations of autumn. It's my favorite time of year by far.

Now I can dust off the soup pot, drink more coffee and hot chocolate, watch the leaves carpet my yard, and snuggle with my doggies under a quilt on the sofa.

Well, maybe not just yet. The high today is supposed to be somewhere in the mid-90s. But there's hope--now that Lady Autumn is here.

Welcome, My Lady. Take off your shawl and stay a while. We're glad to have you any time at The Yellow House.

***

And Happy Rednesday Too!

As we all know, one of the starring colors of autumn is red. So today, I'm linking to Sue's weekly Rednesday blog party. I haven't visited yet, but it will be fun on the day of the Autumn Equinox to see what everyone has come up with.

Red 4

Have a great day, everyone. Happy Autumn.

Added: Just FYI, I'm not a witch nor a practitioner of Wiccan (although I know some very nice people who are), but I love the old Celtic holidays, and especially anything autumn. That's why I celebrate Mabon.

Susan, I love Autumn too. The leaves especially, though raking them not so much. I love to walk through leaves suffleing my feet and kicking the leaves just as I did as a child. Like you I'm ready for homemade soup.
Happy Autumn to you Susan hope the temperature soon drops.

Me three! Autumn is a particular delight for me as I love the colors, the warming foods, the cool breezes, and crisp fragrances.

I've always been drawn to Celtic designs. The Baptist church we belonged to in TX had a women's retreat on Celtic Christianity that was just wonderful. It just seems so right, as if it's part of the equation that's been missing for too long.

Do you have autumn decorations in your home? I do, but not to excess (IMHO!!).

Hugs!

Talking Teddies

Teddy Bear Quilt

A few years ago I did a series of 12" x 12" journal quilts based on Elvis. This is my favorite, "Teddy Bear." The bear is made from some fuzzy fake fur stuff. And see the little bears in the background fabric?

I've always loved teddy bears. I have a small collection of them, shown below. I remember one huge teddy bear that my sister Ramey and I shared when we were children. He was black and white, and Mama and Daddy got him at an auction that was held one night in our hometown. I don't know who was holding the auction or any other details (Ramey probably remembers--she remembers everything). I just remember that my parents bid on the bear and won it. There was another one just like it, but someone else got it, so Ramey and I had to share the one bear. But that was ok.

My bears
Some of my teddies.

***

I watched the season premieres of two of my favorite tv shows last night: "House" and "Castle." Neither one was very knock-your-socks-off exciting. Looking forward to the season opener of "Fringe" on Thursday. And tomorrow night, "Criminal Minds" returns. I don't think this new season premiere, "The Longest Night," will lack for excitement. Tim Curry (I love his bad-guy rolls) returns as serial killer Billy Flynn. The BAU team is up against pure evil.

Gotta go. I have two very impatient doggies pestering me for a walk. Have a great Tuesday everyone. I always thought Tuesday gets short shrift. It's not really a famous day for anything. It and Thursday. They just hang there, holding the rest of the week together. So do something special today to celebrate Tuesday. Let this fine day know it is appreciated.

Hi there!

I love teddy bears, too, and the Elvis Teddy quilt is cute as pie! Well done! Your collection of so many different bears is wonderful! One of my bears was given to me when I was 3 days old and he's one-eyed and shabby now. Another teddy bear had a rubbery muzzle that I teethed on and never heard him complain once. My teddies usually join us at Christmas.

House didn't impress me either and I am bummed that NUMB3RS is gone or I cannot find it. I really liked that show. Sigh ...

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Hugs!

Billy Flynn creeps me out (worse than the Reaper)! I'm taping Criminal Minds so that I can watch it in the daylight! I watched Hawaii Five-0 last night...so much better than I expected...I loved it! (I'm watching too much TV...'cause it's too hot to be outside! Where's fall?)

Can't wait to see Fringe, though I hope they resolve the last-season cliffhanger quickly. I lose patience pretty quickly. As I like to tell my husband, reading is better than watching because I can always read faster!

Criminal Minds is too scarey for me. So we don't watch it anymore.
Psych, White Collar, Castle are favorites. But I have to go to bed around 10, so I miss a lot.
You know, not that I feel deprived or anything, but I don't think I ever had a teddy bear.
Love to Skipper and Sophie!

I love Teddy bears too! My husband likes Castle a lot as good light entertainment. Last night we watched The Event, which I liked better than the other new premiere, Hawaii Five O, which was a bit predictable, violent, and high tech loving to interest me as much.

Tuesday is my favorite day of the week! I was born on a Tuesday, that's why :)

The Gang's All Home!

WH1Soph

Sophie upon arriving home: "Where's my Dog?"

WH2Skip

Bless his little pea-picking heart! I've never seen anybody so glad to be back in the arms of his family than my Skipper was this morning. He couldn't be still in the car all the way home. He wanted to keep giving me kisses. Then when we got home, he and Sophie played until he couldn't play anymore. Sophie wasn't ready to quit, but post-op Skipper couldn't keep up her pace.

WH3S&S

The vet assured me that he is doing great and is in perfect health. Of course, everyone there fell in love with him, especially the girl who had kennel duty over the weekend. In addition to his neutering procedure, I also had them to give him a microchip. Since he was a lost dog when I got him, I thought we should play it safe with him. I think I'll get Sophie one too.

VacSuSu&Boys2

Our beach trip was fantastic. Above you can see me as I appeared during the four days of our retreat--no makeup (not a bit) and hair air-dryed. That's my handsome grandson Jesse in the red shirt and his friend Heath making the monkey face. I couldn't have asked for a better group to have a restful weekend with. Andy wouldn't let me lift a finger hardly, and the boys were helpful too and also didn't run off chasing girls--well at least not too far off.

But although I had a great time and feel much better than I did when I left, I am so very glad to be home. My favorite place in the whole world is home--just as it is for Sophie and Skipper.

Vac4SuSu&Boys

Here's my beautiful daughter Andy and my beautiful dog Sophie enjoying a glass of wine on our balcony at sunset. (Actually, only Andy had the wine. Sophie is a teetotaler.)

As the sun goes down on our beach retreat, we look forward to home, but also to the next time we have a chance to do it again.

Beachy Boys

Heath and Jesse

OK, no more guesses. The above photo ought to give you the answer. Sandy was on my trail when she guessed that I was going to Cracker Barrel for chicken and dumplings, turnip greens, and corn bread. That's how this adventure started exactly--lunch at Cracker Barrel on Thursday. And that's exactly what I had, along with some pinto beans and iced tea.

Then it was on to Panama City Beach, where I've been chilling ever since with my daughter Andy, grandson Jesse, and Jesse's friend Heath. The photo above shows Heath on the left and Jesse on the right after a dip in the warm Gulf waters. No oil, no tar balls, just miles of white sandy beach, blue water, and golden sunshine. This morning, Andy and I had our coffee on the balcony of the condo. We watched pelicans diving for their breakfast, a pod of dolphin gliding by, and a beach cat down in the sea oats and grasses leaping for dragon flies. God is good.

Skipper Update

Skip 3 I delivered the Skipster to the vet's office Thursday morning before we left for the beach. He was a little nervous, but for the most part, he was a brave little boy. I telephoned to check on him at about 3:00 that afternoon. Dr. Rachel's assistant told me that he came through his surgery beautifully and that he was up "prancing around his cage." You see? No harm, no foul.

Sophie and I miss him and can't wait to see him. We'll pick him up on Monday morning.

Giveaway Winner

Heath drew a number for me from among all your comments on Thursday's post. And the winner is WENDY! The prize will a surprise prize because I didn't get around to deciding what the prize will be before I left home. But it will be a good one. Wendy please e-mail me your full name and mailing address to suscleve@aol.com when you can.

I have a very unreliable internet connection here, so I'm going to sign off. I already lost this post once, and don't won't to go through again what I had to go through to get it back. Happy Weekend, everyone.

Snipping Skipper

Pink1
Now I know why I thought I needed two pink gingham chairs in my office instead of just one.

In just a bit, I'm taking Skipper up to Dr. Rachel's. He's scheduled for surgery, you know, to remove his, uh, manhood, today. I have felt guilty about it ever since I scheduled him, and the men I know haven't made it any easier. They talk like I'm having the poor little pooch labotomized. I almost backed out, but I didn't. I know I'm doing what's best for him. He'll be less likely to roam away from home if he should accidentally get outside unsupervised. Someone told me he'd be less likely to have prostate problems. So wish Skipper luck. He's going under the knife today. (Why does nobody seem to have a problem when you have a female pet spayed, but this male neutering thing sets off a storm of moaning and protest? Are those things sacred or something?)

Also here's a chance to win a prize. Guess where I'm going today--in addition to taking Skipper to Dr. Rachel. You don't have to be correct to win, but guess anyway. I'll draw from among the guesses and comments on this post and let you know tomorrow who the winner is. I don't know what the prize is yet, but it'll be a good one.

Awwwww, bless Skipper's little heart and other parts! You're doing the right thing, the responsible thing, and he'll recover in a short time. Guess what?! He'll thank you for rescuing him from THAT PLACE and bringing him home again, too! Just cover the furniture with thick old towels so he cannot mess up your upholstery.

I love the quilt behind the pink gingham chairs, too. You were psychic in knowing you'd need two such chairs so the kids would each have a place to nestle and keep you company!

My guess is that you're either going to a quilt shop, a thrift shop, or out to lunch with a friend or family member to help take your mind of Skipper's surgery. Oh, you might also be going to the pet shop to buy Skipper a please-forgive-me gift! Do 4 quesses count?

Please let us know how Skipper does.

Hugs!

I guess it all goes back to that "jewel" thing or something. Like ovaries don't matter??? Out of sight, out of mind? I don't understand it either.

Great picture. Ya think Skipper is telling Sophie "ha ha, I have a pillow and your don't" :)

The vet told us that every male dog should be neutered to prevent prostate cancer, so we got our little male chihuahua neutered and he was ready to play later on that day.

Good luck Skipper.

I think you're going to have some sort of delicious milkshake - don't know where, but that's my hunch - and if that wasn't on your agenda, maybe you should add it in anyway!!

Good luck, Skipper!
Looking at that photo, makes me think you need another pink gingham chair! :-)
Where you are going today? Of course you are going to your local quilt shop to treat yourself, and after that you are going to Starbucks bringing home your favourite coffee! Because that's what I would have liked to do!
Enjoy your day!

Wherever you go and whatever you do may it bring gladness into your heart. Also, Skipper will be such a good boy for the rest of his days. Our Sparky continues to pee like a girl after his "Jewels" were removed. That is such a blessing to not having a dog squirting every piece of lawn furniture, etc. to mark his territory.

Makes perefect sense to me to neuter of apay a dog or cat. Don't understand the male attitude at all!
I think you may be heading to the thrift store and to have a milkshake or maybe a nice lunch out , whatever it is ENJOY!

Good luck to Skipper today. We have never owned a male dog, so haven't had to experience this part of belonging to a pet.

I would guess that you are going to the thrift store an then for your favorite malkshake.

I read down thru the comments...and acupunture? Those guessers must know something the rest of us don't. My first thought (why I don't know) was to Paula Deen's. And another commenter said the same thing! Well, whatever you're doing, have fun. I, too, love the quilt behind the chairs.

When I picked Pumpkin, my cat, up from the vet after his tutoring, um, I mean neutering, he lept out of the technician's arms and into mine. Verna commented she had never seen a cat do that before. Pumpkin chose me to be his Mommy and he meant it! I'm probably too late to guess, but I'd have to say Hobby Lobby.

Rednesday's Child

  J&V2

This is one of  my favorite photos, Jesse and Vann years ago. Two handsome guys, don't you think?

I thought this was a great photo to feature for Sue's Rednesday blog party over at It's a Very Cherry World.

Below are a few more red offerings from The Yellow House.

Red1
I didn't make this quilt. I bought it years ago from Claire Murray. I often use it on my bed during the  holiday season. But now that I've become a Red Head, I've decided to leave it out more to be enjoyed.

Red 2b
Over the weekend, I found this white frame/wall hook piece at a local yard sale. Price tag: $1. Back in 2005, I was into fabric postcards. I made and sent over 400 of them, and received almost as many. I decided that this piece would be perfect to showcase some of my collected fabric postcards. I chose three red ones. The artists who made them are (left to right): Karen Walker of Warrenton, Virginia; Janice Simpson of Marquette, Michigan; and Kathleen (don't have her last name or where she's from).

I can change out the cards from time to time. I have all kinds of seasonal cards (halloween, Christmas, etc.) that I can feature.

I haven't hung the frame yet because I haven't decided where I'll hang it.

***

I took a little spill yesterday while walking the dogs up behind the house. ("A little spill" is a euphemism for "fell down and busted my backside.") I stepped in a hole (probably dug by some roving armadillo--or either one of my dogs), and kersplat went I. It hurt really bad when I fell, especially both my ankles. I thought I had done some real damage. But after I lay on the ground for a few minutes while Sophie and Skipper gave my face a good going over with their sweet little tongues (yekk!), I decided I could get up. And I did, and nothing hurt so bad after all.

However, as the afternoon progressed, so did the pain in my ankles, especially my right ankle. A big old knot and an ugly bruise also appeared on my right ankle. I grabbed the ice bag that I keep in the freezer for just such klutzoid events as this, and kept my ankle iced for the rest of the day in between subsequent dog walks. This morning, I still have the bruise, but the knot has gone way down and the pain has turned into just some soreness. So I think I'll live.

I'll try to keep off my feet as much as possible today. I have a big pot of chili on the stove right now that I have to deliver to the church to feed the church young'ns this evening. But that's about  all I have to do today. The rest of the time, I'll be on the couch reading Bloodroot by Amy Greene on my Kindle. I only just started it last night and I'm intrigued already. The story is set in Tennessee's Smoky Mountains and involves granny women, magic, herbalism, and mystical powers.

Oh I hope you are ok. You better be careful. The quilt is absolutely beautiful. Oh and your picture of Vann and Jesse is so sweet. I know it is so special. Even though I am not much of a reader (I am a wanna be) the book you are reading sounds like what I would like. My Mother is the reader in the family. Take care and be careful.

Well bless your heart and the rest of you, too. Ouch!! This old nurse says to be sure any ice bag is inside a flannel bag or a towel is between skin and ice bag. Ice in a zip lock bag (or the like) and in contact with skin can burn the skin as heat does.

Love your $1 frame and think your plan to rotate fabric post cards is a worthy one!

The photo of Vann and little Jesse is a wonderful picture of them both. If that doesn't warm the cockles of your heart I don't know what will!

Be sure that hole in the yard is marked and/or filled in!

Hugs!

Well...you can't live in a bubble...you could wear tight boots, then you wouldn't twist your ankle(but then would probably break a leg!). I suggest keeping an keen eye out for any and all possible obstacles that you might trip over. I've fallen into plenty of chuck holes on our two acres. No fun! I always thought I was a suck it up type of gal. After hanging with my 91yo dad, I've learned I need to get a lot tougher if I want to see 90!! It is much easier if you have someone cheering you on. Hi Susan
Glad that you have no serious injuries from your fall. Is the hole filled in yet?
The idea of an armadillo in the yard sounds very exotic to me. We have possums here that migrated to Canada from the South via trucks, who knows maybe we'll have armadillos one day.
Lovely photo of Vann and Jesse, another memory to treasure.

Walking Sticks, the Good Kind

Walking stick 2

All this discussion of debilitating diseases and what-not, and lo and behold look what appears on the Yellow House this morning! A Walking Stick Bug! I've always thought that a walking stick bug is one of the most beautiful examples of natural selection, evolution, whatever. Some people think Darwin's theories go counter to a belief in God. I couldn't disagree more. Oh what a divine intelligence it must have taken to design a walking stick bug! Who cares how the design came about? Isn't he wonderful? God, I mean. Well, and the walking stick bug too.

I appreciate all your comments, information, and advice. Some of it I knew, some I didn't. I do have a rheumatologist, and I visit him at least once a year. I find my family doctor to be just as helpful, if not more, though. And I visit him several times a year.

Medications-pills-pile I think I have been prescribed just about every medication that has ever been indicated for fibromyalgia, and some that have not. I've found Cymbalta to work better for me than anything else I've taken. I had taken it for a couple of years and decided one day it wasn't working, so I decided to wean myself from it. I was about halfway through the wean when I figured out that indeed is was working. I began to feel like I had been buried in a bed of fire ants after having wolves chew on me. So I weaned myself back onto it.

In addition to Cymbalta, I also have pills for blood pressure, mytral valve prolapse, esophogeal problems, low thyroid, high cholesterol, muscles relaxers, and anti-imflamatories. Maybe some more. I have to be looking at them to remember them all.

I have also been tested for just about every disease known to man, but I'm not sure if I've been tested for lupus. And even if I have, it sounds like sometimes it takes more than one testing. Therefore, I'm putting that on my list to ask my doctor next time.

Somebody, I forget who, suggested I get a dog. I'll take that as kidding right now, since both of my doggies are tussling around me feet, making thinking even harder than normal for me.

BigDog2

Exercise is always a problem for me. But I do walk at least half a mile a day (most days) with the dogs. Days when I can, I do a mile. I'm not saying I enjoy it. It hurts. And even a stroll to the end of the street and back wears me slap out. I did try heated pool exercises once, but quit because of the long drive to the facility. It did help though. I need to look for a closer pool. This one is an almost 20-mile drive to and from.

Old-lady-squat

Click on the above photo to see these ladies in action.

In reading all your comments and thinking of past advice from many of you--I think I know that a big part of my problem is, well, me. I don't know where I got the idea that one has to "keep going," no matter what. But I feel that way. It's partially guilt (an emotion for which I have excellent skills and endurance). That's at least 50%. OK, 90%. All the while I'm lying on the couch watching a movie or reading, the thought of that unfinished baby quilt, unpainted front door, unlandscaped yard, unlaundered laundry, unvaccumed carpets, unwalked dogs, uneverything are nagging nagging nagging. Who can rest with all that nagging?

But there's also the feeling that if I don't keep going, I won't be able to keep going. You know, the invalid thing. I DO NOT WANT THAT!

So instead of taking a year off and wallowing around after Vann's illness and death and my subsequent bouts with flu, bronchitis, tendonitis, and a couple other itises, I flew right into the major project of redoing the house. I know now that I should have put that off a year or two until I had recuperated a bit. But I didn't.

BE071744

So now, I have to learn to:

1) back off and let things go when I feel awful--no matter if that's just for a day, a week, a month, a year, or however long.

CHILL!!

20081005bubbles

2) accept help from friends and family, another thing I'm not good at. My pastor called me this morning to check on me and offered to do my grocery shopping. I almost took him up on it, but I couldn't quite bring myself there. I'm going to work on that. From now on, if a chore just must be done and I'm not feeling up for it, I'm calling one of those bazillions of friends who have lovingly offered their help.

Images

3) Work on destressing my life. Knowing that stress is poison for me, I will avoid it, ignore it, run from it, hide from it. Tell it to take a hike. Kick it's...oh well, you get the idea.

Mannequin+kicking+Ass

3) (and this is a biggy) stop feeling guilty when I blow off a club meeting or other social gathering, or even church. I can't even imagine where these feelings come from, but I feel like I have to apologize to somebody if I miss a quilters guild meeting, bee, book club, church, or whatever. That's pretty nuts, huh?

4) Let sleeping dogs lie, and join them from time to time.

I always love reading your self-discoveries because they apply to so many of us! Why do we women ALWAYS feel we 'must' do everything? And when we CAN'T, why do we feel we 'must' apologize? Sometimes I visualize myself popping my round head out of my coffin to say, "Oh, goodness! I'm really SO sorry I wasn't able to make it to the gathering Thursday, but I was busy being run over by that truck driver." LOL! You are VERY correct about Lupus - takes way more than one test to diagnose it. I just hope you will remember when you feel bad, STOP. When you don't want to do something, DON'T! And when you are tired, REST! We all need to remember that! I LOVE YOU!

We can alal learn from your post. I am sure you were full speed ahead after Van passed. When I first read your post, I thought maybe you had just moved. I wondered why you were doing all that you were. But, I think I understand. I hope that you will accept help and just do what you can and feel good about it. So sorry that your health comes in the way. Maybe that will eventually get better when you slow down. There are some days when I just chill. It's not bad. Good luck.

Susan - a very sensible sorted woman - you are an inspiration and I think every one of us reading today can learn from what you have written!
Take care my dear, you are in my prayers! Maybe when the weather cools a little you will feel better and life will start being fun again!
I certainly hope so.
Alternatively, stay home, write a book, we will all buy it and you will become stupendously rich and famous and can pay people to do all those chores!

On 09/13/2010, Alison in UK said ...

That all sounds like very good advice Susan. I'm sorry you're struggling so much at the moment. I understand the need to "do" after a dear one dies, but at some point grief needs to be worked through and it sounds as if your body is telling you it's now. I don't know anything about your lifestyle, but I do find your list of medications seriously scary and can't believe that anyone can take a cocktail like that and not suffer side-effects. Is there any way to adjust your diet to reduce your reliance on some of the meds, such as cholesterol and high blood pressure? Maybe if you manage to get rid of some of the meds your need for some of the others might reduce? The pharmaceutical industry is only there to make money, we have to take ownership of our own health, and fortunately nowadays we have a wealth of information at our fingertips (though obviously some caution is advised when researching on the internet!!). With all best wishes.

Wise words, grasshopper! Please repeat them to yourself when you need to quell the nagging voice in your heard with the "should" litany! I know I say very similar things to myself when "could" has turned to "can't" and I must sit or fall on my face.

Since I read the analogy of comparing the amount of energy you have each day to spoons, I had a new idea. It crossed my mind when I'm out of spoons and am resting as I must, it's like my spoons are in the dishwasher getting ready for my restored allotment of energy. I'm not being really productive (unless the washer/dryer/dishwasher are working!) but I'm investing in myself. I didn't choose this, so I have nothing to feel guilty about. It is what it is and I'm along for the ride.

Be sweet to yourself!

Love and hugs!

The walking stick is amazing--I don't believe I have ever seen one up close.

These are good lessons for just about everyone. We all can learn to lean on others just a little more and not feel guilty for it! I'm glad you have lots of people who are in your life and also your pets to help you along. There was an article in the Health section today that said that the support of friends and family and community support allow people to live longer lives. Love helps!

Susan, I think you're right on!
I am like you in that I think I have to keep doing and moving and taking care of things. A wise counselor told me several years ago that I needed to learn to have compassion for myself. That transformed my life.
It says in the Bible to love our neighbor as ourselves. If we don't love ourselves, how do we know how to love our neighbors? Well, part of loving ourselves is having compassion for ourselves. So let yourself off the hook!

On 09/13/2010, Bonnie said ...

Susan, I wish you were my neighbor so I could come over and help you out with a dinner or errand!

You are in my prayers as you are coping with pain and stress. One thing that helps me give up and ask for help is asking myself if a friend had my symptoms, how would I treat the friend? Chances are we are tougher on ourselves than our friends -- so treat yourself like your best friend and give yourself some relaxing time!

I work full time, and daydream about sitting in the lawn chair admiring the view in the backyard for 30 minutes every day. Please, do a little of that for me, would you? Just sit and admire the view!

Hi Susan. I am so sorry to hear you're struggling with a myriad of problems. I hope you don't mind but I wanted to ask a question - have you considered acupuncture? I see an acupuncturist and truly LOVE the treatments. I come away from them feeling thoroughly relaxed, destressed, and rejuvenated. (Not to mention, they do help with the physical ailments I'm seeking treatment for. :) I asked my acupuncturist whether acu can treat fibromyalgia. She said to tell you, "Yes, not as a cure, but we can help keep the symptoms under good control." So, I thought I might pass that along to you. I realize that acupuncture sounds like hocus pocus - I don't totally believe in it, either, I just know that it works for me. Take care of you. ~Stephanie at Buttermilk Hill

It sounds like you have a better handle on things today. It's hard for us that are used to doing things for ourselves to ask for help, I stuggle with that myself, but find that I can wait until I get help and the world doesn't really fall apart. But it sure is a struggle sometime to just rest....
Hope your day is better, love ya.....
