Fresh Berry Muffins

I didn't feel like getting ready for church this morning, so I made a pan of muffins instead. I had almost a full container of fresh blueberries that weren't going to last much longer. I decide that a batch of Easy Blueberry Muffins was the place to put them

EASY BLUEBERRY MUFFINS
1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 c. sugar
2 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. fresh or unthawed frozen blueberries
3/4 c. milk
1 egg
1/3 c. melted butter
In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
Add milk, egg and butter to dry mix. Stir until moist.
Add blueberries.
Spoon batter into 12 to 15 paper-lined or greased muffin cups.

Bake at 400°F for 20 to 25 minutes. Serve warm.

That's the recipe I used, but I had more like a cup and a half of fresh blueberries instead of a cup of frozen ones. I can assure you, they made a wonderful brunch.

Now I need to go upstairs and sew, but I think the baking session took all my spoons. Reading on the sofa is probably more realistic.

Happy Sunday, everyone.

Oh, I was just thinking of blueberry muffins this morning, but DH made banana bread last night so that needs to be eaten and enjoyed before any more baking happens here.

Your blueberry muffins look scrumptious and that recipe does look marvelously simple. Thank you!

Hope your relaxing time spent reading restored some of your spoons.

Last weekend we had the blizzard and today the high is 62*F. Lots of snow remains and much of the ground where there's no snow is all is muddy and mushy.

Hugs!

Polka Dot Pretties

Scissosrs
Many of you are no doubt familiar with Sharon at Daisy Cottage Quilting. But did you know that she also has a wonderful Etsy Shop where you can find the cutest stuff? I was there the other day, looking for a particular fabric, which I also found. And I found these wonderful scissors. I love red and I love polka dots. So you know I had to order these. Aren't they cheerful?

Brushy
And while we're on the subject of red and polka dots, look what I found at WalMart. My dish brush is so worn, I needed a new one. But I love this little brush so much, I don't think I'll use her. Just let her sit on the sink and be pretty.

These scissors and dish brush are both too cute! I like red (and most other colors) and polka-dots, too. I need to visit Sharon's etsy shop soon.

Several years ago I found Christmas scissors somewhere (don't remember where) and bought 3 pairs so I could keep on, give one to AMIL, and the last one went to DS1's fiancee. They're fun to use when wrapping Christmas gifts.

Where Were You?

Challenger-AP_86010101567

That morning, January 28, 1986, I was at my computer writing a story about something farm related. That's all I remember. At the time, I was a writer for Progressive Farmer magazine, so it had to be something farm related. My assistant stuck her head into my office and told me that the Challenger had just exploded. She was crying.

I can't remember much after that. I think maybe we all went home. Or maybe we just went to the conference room where there was a tv. I can't remember.

I do remember that mostly all I could think of for days afterward, and still sometimes, is what they must have endured. I hold onto the hope that the blast rendered them unconscious immediately. But we'll never know.

And I remember part of President Reagan's address to the nation, the part about the astronauts having "slipped the surly bonds of earth." Godspeed, Challenger Crew. We'll always remember you.

I was in the car listening to my radio. The usually stoic news director came on the station and announced it. I remember it clearly. I also remember Reagan's tribute that they "slipped the surly bonds of earth...to touch the face of God."

I live in NH and we were all greatly affected. I had just picked up my 4yo daughter from the library story time and we rushed home to watch it on tv. I explained to her why this launch was so important because there was a teacher on it and she was going to teach millions of children from space. When it exploded I just about went into shock and I started crying. My little girl kept asking me why I was crying so I had to turn off the tv and change the subject until I could tell her in a way she would understand. She is 34 and a teacher so I like to think that day had something to do with it.

I was at work at a hotel type facility and we had the television on in the recreation room and we were all watching it.

After the explosion we were just all stunned and teary eyed.

The only part of President Reagan's speech that I remember was the quote several people have noted. . . ."slipped the surly bonds of earth. . . to touch the face of God."

I was at work in a fabric store and didn't find out until later. But my now-ex husband and I wrote a letter to the President, our Congressman, and our Representative saying we still supported the space program and not to let this deter the important projects derived from it. We got letters back immediately from the Congressman and Representative and eventually one back from the White House. And I got a letter from NASA inviting me to apply for the civilian astronaut program. I didn't--I couldn't pass the health requirement. I kept the letter but not the husband.

Week Four Farm Girl Block

Pig2

So I decided to sew the piggy block instead of the cow this time. It made me think of my mama. She loved pigs and had a whole collection of ceramic ones. Cait has most of them now.

Four blocks are all it has taken to teach me that I don't want to make another quilt of six-inch blocks. They are extremely tedious, especially now that my hands and arms shake like a 9 on the Richter Scale. I've been told that it's just another fibro symptom, but I'm beginning to believe that fibro has become a catch-all term for "I'm clueless."

I changed my health insurance and had to choose a new doctor. And although I'll miss my old doctor (who has been my doctor for at least 25 or 30 years, and he's funny and outgoing and very sympathetic) I won't miss the 70-mile round-trip I have to make to see him him since he moved away from Leeds. And I'm looking forward to visiting the new doc to see if maybe he has a better plan to get me feeling a little better.

BOM
This is the guild block of the month for February that I whipped up after I made the pig block.

Cheers for your This Little Piggy block and am wondering if you'll add a curly-cue tail. Will you?

Love your guild block, too. Is this for a block drawing so someone who made a block will win all that were made? If so, hope you win!

I'm sorry to hear that your fibro symptoms have caused this unwelcome shaking in your arms. Bother and bummer. I hope your new doctor will have new ideas, new treatments, and a new medicine or combination of medicines that will stop the pain and the shaking and will restore your spoon supply to normal. Might as well wish big, doncha know?! :)

Hugs!

I agree about the difficulty of making 6 inch blocks. I am finally sewing together all the blocks of the Moda Modern Blocks. The 6 inch blocks were the hardest to sew. Something about all the tiny seams and getting them to lay flat when one presses them...Seams just need more room it seems to me. Sorry about all the homonyms. You might really like a new doctor. I, too, had to change doctors because of new insurance. I really like the new doctors I have seen. It is hard discussing all the aches and pains to someone new, but my younger docs seem to really know their stuff.

I think perhaps the 70 mile round trip was causing you lots more pain, too.

Not Quite a Blizzard

Snow1
My handcrafted good-luck bell that Cait and Kathryn sent me from Woodstock, NY, where they spent most of last winter.

When the weather forecasters commenced pronouncing the "S" word for North Alabama, we all got a little excited, especially the grocery store managers. It didn't take long for the bread, milk, and toilet paper shelves to become bare. So this morning, everyone has a hoarder's supply of these products, and no snow to be seen. Oh it did snow, I saw it. Yesterday afternoon, the white stuff started falling and continued off and on until at least dark. Some even stuck to roofs and trees. But this morning, what little fell has melted away.

But it's COLD! And the wind is blowing like a blizzard. Scared heck out of Taco. I wish I had filmed him trying to do battle with the invisible force outside that he was struggling to avoid. Finally he gave up and came back inside. The neighbor had raised his garage door anyway, a signal to Taco that the "Big Dogs" would be appearing on the other side of his fence shortly. That Taco.

I really need to go to the grocery store myself, having not heeded the Snow Warning and stocked up before the flurries. But it's so darn cold out there, I do believe we'll have to do with whatever we can scrounge up for now.

Snow2
Bundle up and stay warm, friends--especially those of you who were in the path of the real blizzard.

12592333_10153385420538589_3072346792440716179_n
And for those of you in or near Long Island, N.Y., please be especially vigilant. Me, I'd rather have snow.

Holy Lizzards, Batman! Somebody in New York state didn't use spell-check!

So far, so good here but it's still snowing hard as well as being windy and causing drifts today. All of the footprints I made yesterday have completely been filled-in and disappeared. We surmise we've had about 14" of snow and last night got 4" of sleet. It's amazing!

We did heed the snow warnings so our pantry is full and I did a lot of cooking for DS2 so he has warm, nutritious food aplenty to tide him over. He as declined to come here for the duration.

Stay cozy!

Spools

SpoolsI have my Week 3 Farm Girl block, Spools, finished already. So I'm a few days ahead of schedule. I'm not making them in any kind of order. I just open the book and pick one. I plan to make the cow next--if I don't change my mind.

Now I think I'll head down to the sofa and try to finish the book I'm reading, The Girl on the Train. Lots of people are reading it, so I had to see what it was all about. Sort of in the genre of Gone Girl. I can't wait to find out how it ends and who done it. I have no idea at this point. But then I've never been good about figuring out a mystery. Vann was tops at it. He would have it all figured out (movie or book) before I could get well acquainted with the characters.

I hope everyone's New Year has started out on a good note. I have already made two quilt blocks and read almost two books this year, so I'm feeling pretty good about 2016.

Well done on your sewing and reading accomplishments for the new year, too, and you can give yourself a pat on the back.

We got 3" of snow yesterday (mostly melted), the low tonight is forecast to be 11*F. and we may have more snow Friday and Saturday. Do you suppose winter finally arrived? My winter wall quilts have felt rather silly with our daytime highs for the last weeks staying around 50*F. So far in January, we've had only 3 days with highs in the 30s*F and nothing lower during the days.

Old Red Hen

Hen

I just finished my second Farm GIrl Sampler block. Two weeks into the new year, and I have two blocks finished. If I can keep up the pace of a block a week (well, I actually made the first block in 2015), I'll have enough 6" blocks for a quilt just before next Christmas. Or if I experience a burst of energy at some time during the coming year, maybe I can get them done sooner.

I also replaced one of the stripes in the first of my Farm Girl blocks, the flag. I didn't like the bottom strip, didn't think it had enough contrast with the checked stripe. I like it better now.

Applause, applause!!! Isn't it fun to finish a block to your own satisfaction even if it means ripping a few stitches out? Also, part of the delight for your project is that it is being done in small bites. No huge rush to completion, so you can enjoy the process along the way. Nice!

Hope I can get myself back in gear as I've not sewn a bit since the new year started. It's weirdly warm for January here, so perhaps that's part of why I feel discombobulated.

Hugs!

Wire Fix

Blog3

When people mount their tvs on the wall, I often wonder where they hide all the wires. You never see any. Look what a mess of wires were visible behind my entertainment area until I came up with this fix (photos below).

Blog4

Blog2
I made a pretty little curtain from some red-and-white striped fabric in my stash and use a spring rod to hang it under the back of the tv table, which is really an old sofa table that I bought many years ago. Abracadabra! Wires gone! Well, except for that one barely peaking out on the left. I guess I need to move my table over a little.

Blog1

Next I want to make a similar skirt/curtain to hang in my fireplace opening (we never use the fireplace) to add a little color in the area (and maybe discourage Bella from going in there). I might leave the black screen in place too and just let the color show through it. Or I might remove the screen altogether. I've had it there ever since we moved into this house in 1996 (coming up on 20 years ago this May). Maybe I need a whole new change. We'll see how things go.

FPFabric

I plan to use one of the fabrics above (also from my stash) for the fireplace curtain--and the other one for valances for the living room window, or maybe sofa cushions. I'm not crazy about the cushions that came with my new sofa. They're huge and have fringe. I'm not fond of fringed cushions.

Applause for the brilliant idea of making a cute curtain to hide all of those annoying but necessary cords!

I love the fireplace screen, suggest using a solid fabric behind it, and keeping the screen to add the design. I'd use the toile fabric for a pillow front as it's just lovely.

Don't you love chilly weather or other reasons to stay home and cozy so you have time to think up these good ideas?

Birthday Dog Number Two

Skipper3

Today we celebrate Skipper Lou Blue's 6th birthday. Truth to tell, we really don't know the exact date of Skipper's birthday, nor his exact age.
It's all guesswork.

You see, when he came to live at The Yellow House in July of 2011, Dr. Rachel estimated his age to be between one and two years old. So when Sophie's birthday came around the next January, we decided that since we didn't know Skipper's birthday, he could share Sophie's and we would count him
as two years old.

As time went by, however, Skipper became dissatisfied with sharing his birthday and wanted one of his very own. So this year, Skipper's birthday has been moved to January 12. Now everybody has his own birthday. Nobody has to share. Well, except for Taco and Bella, who were actually born on the same day and don't seem to have a problem with sharing--as long was each one gets his own treats.

So Happy Birthday, Mr. Skipper. Life got really interesting when you moved in.

Birthday Dog

Happy 14th birthday, Sophie Belle Patterpaw, born January 11, 2002, in Warwick, New York.
At ten weeks, she came to live with SuSu and PopPop in Alabama and has been here ever since.
In 2007, we thought we had lost her to a strange and deadly disease, hemalytic anemia. But thanks to the dedicated work of some wonderful vets, she survived and became known in some circles as The Miracle Dog.
She doesn't get around quite as well as she used to, and (thank goodness) it has been a while since she caught a squirrel in the backyard. But she's doing well. Her doctor says so.
Have a fine day, Miss Sophie. You are a much loved doggie.

First Bee Meeting of the Year

B2

B4

...and I was there. I left a little early. I was hesitant to lie down on Mary U.'s sofa to ease the back pain (not that anybody would have minded, I'm sure). So I went home and lay on my own sofa.

It was a fun meeting with delicious snacks and some great show-and-tell. Above are a few photos. They're above because that's the only place the computer or Typepad or something will allow my to put them. In fact, I had to load them in the opposite order from how I wanted them to appear--i.e., last photo loaded first, etc. I need a new computer or a new browser or a new blog platform. I'm not sure which. Maybe all three.

Photo #1: Mary S. made this soft and cozy quilt from a kit called "Merry Stitches" by Cori Dantini.

Photo #2: Detail from Mary's "Merry Stitches."

It's Been a While

Some of my Chistmas goodies, thanks to daughter Angela

I managed to get through most of the Days of Christmas by blogging only, what, one time, maybe two. I continued to feel like my life is not within my control, just like I'm batting away balls as they're thrown at me. As those of you who, like me, deal with chronic pain/fatigue issues, know, there is only so much strength and endurance available to get through the day. I'm using all of mine to do the things that absolutely have to be done: laundry, grocery shopping, cooking, keeping the dishes clean. There's not much left over for fun stuff like sewing. Thank goodness, reading requires only enough strength to lie on the couch and hold my reader--and even that is more than I have at times.
I just realized yesterday that it has been weeks since either dog has had a bath, thus the unpleasant odor upon snuggling with either of them. So I called the groomer and made appointments for next week, both on the same day--which I shouldn't have done. It is almost impossible for me, because of Skipper's hyperactivity, to deal with them both at once away from home. Guess I'll call ahead and have someone meet at the car to get one of them in.
Seems like all I do is complain anymore. So my resolution for 2016 is to complain less and be grateful for what I have and what I can do. If lying on the couch and reading is all I can manage some days, I will thank God for writers--or movie makers if the strength to hold the book eludes me and I have to resort to Netflix.
Happy Thursday, everyone.

Amen, sister! What a worthy goal it is to make an effort not to complain about what you cannot do (or do right now). I'll try to join you in this effort.

Love your new puzzles! How do you keep the cats from knocking puzzle pieces hither and thither and from disassembling the puzzle?

I seem to have worked myself into a lupus flare and am with you on doing only the necessary things. Our two trees and the boxes of Christmas decorations are still indoors (but out of the way). My time has been spent packing up those boxes and sitting quite a lot. As we know too well, when the spoons are gone, they're gone and we must stop. If I don't stop, I cry at the drop of a hat and that's not good. Okay, 'nuf of that!

Be good to you. Hugs!

Good Luck Dinner

Is it only in the south that blackeyed peas are considered good luck for New Year's Day dinner? Around here, we wouldn't let a JANUARY 1 go by without them.

I also cooked collard greens, roast beef, and rice. I ate so much I can barely move now. So I'm going to do some deep couch sitting and watch a movie that has come to be a tradition around here this time of year, "The Thin Man," circa 1934.

I had black eyed peas when I was growing up. Never did that tradition with my kids, as they didn't like them. I love all of the Thin Man series, too. Hope you have a good day today.

Our menu for yesterday's New Year's Day dinner also included black-eyed peas served with mashed potatoes and ham as we hail from Tennessee and Georgia (Ft. Benning). Yum!

We have The Thin Man movie boxed set and love those movies, too. Wasn't Myrna Loy the cutest?

I'm still putting Christmas away so am paying the price for the putting up the big tree, changing out many wall pictures for framed Santas and other Christmas cards, and putting away my several Christmas bed and wall quilts. I think I can, I think I can!

Hugs!
