Weekend Recap & a Look Ahead

HAAQult

Our makeup January quilt guild meeting was scheduled for this morning. The meeting was cancelled on the regular date because of the snow/ice storm. I had the best of intentions of attending, but when I woke up this morning, my body said, "We're not ready to get up yet. We need 30 more minutes." Skipper agreed with my body parts so I dozed off. When I woke the second time, it was too late to even think about getting reading and driving the 20 miles. So here I am, not at guild.

However, as you can see in the above photo, I do have some quilt talk. Yesterday afternoon, my sisters, my niece India, and I gathered at sister Joanne's house for our first monthly Sisters Supper. Joanne had prepared a mouthwatering meal of roast pork, mashed potatoes, carrots, broccoli, apple pie, and maybe some more stuff I've forgotten.

We ate and talked and had a great afternoon. Joanne had laid out some quilts from her collection and invited us all to choose one. I chose the Hands All Around quilt in the photo above. My mama made it. She had a somewhat offbeat color sensibility, which shows up in this quilt.

Actually, I think Mama was quite color blind--not just red/green color blind, but totally couldn't tell one color from the next. That fact was made plain to me when I first showed her my blue-and-yellow "Gathering" quilt (the one in the blog banner above). She examined it and approved, then announced, "The pink block is my favorite." Now, I know you can't see the entire quilt in the blog banner, but trust me: there's no pink block in that quilt.

Added note about Mama's quilting: She did it all by hand--all the piecing, quilting, everything. She even sewed her borders on by hand.

Anyway I love the "Hands All Around" quilt. It's so Mama. Thank you, Jo, for giving it to me. I'll pass it on to one of my children when I move on. The vintage sewing basket sitting atop the quilt belonged to my husband Vann's grandmother. The family gave it to me when Granny passed away. Vann and I had just got married, but I had the opportunity to meet this dear lady and get to know her just a little. She was 97 when she passed.

Granny'sbasket

Next month will be my turn to host our Sister Supper. I've already been making plans, and changing plans constantly, about what to serve. I'm looking forward to another family gathering.

February is going to be a very busy month for me, and that worries me a little. You know how my body often rebels at the slightest hint of activity. Well, Feb. is going to be a whirlwind of activity--all stuff I really want to do. I don't know how I let this happen. Just look at my schedule for February!!!

Feb. 7          Piecemakers Quilting Bee monthly meeting
Feb. 10-13    Quilting Retreat at Camp McDowell
Feb 14         Feb. monthly meeting of Bham Quilters Guild
Feb. 21        Andy's Birthday (no plans yet)
Feb.  18       Book Club at my house
Feb. 25-26    Women's Spiritual Renewal Conference at church
Feb. 27        Sisters Supper at my house

I think I'll move Sisters Supper to Feb. 20 and combine it with Andy's birthday, if nobody objects. That will cut the festivities by one at least.

Andy and I finished another quilt puzzle over the weekend. And I began decoupaging one of the ones I've finished. I think I have only two more to put together, then I can go to the next step in my secret project.

Puzzle1

Puzzle2

Someone--Barbara, I believed--asked where one might find Diane Phalen quilt puzzles. You can find them on her website and on several other puzzle sites online. (Just google "Diane Phalen puzzles" if you want more options.) The only place I've seen them offline was at quilt shops. Some carry them, some don't. Click on either of the links in this paragraph to take you to where you can order Diane's puzzles.

My friend Gene just phoned me. He's the friend who has just been diagnosed with brain tumors and is going into surgery tomorrow. The surgeon will have to remove half of his skull to do the operation because the tumors are in both hemispheres of his brain. He sounded great and he says he feels fine; I'm praying that is a sign that all will be well with this good man. I'm praying hard. And now I'm crying, so I have to go. God bless Gene.

Susan, I love your Mama's quilt, butI love quilts with lots of different colours together. Maybe I have an odd colour sense.
You'll have to schedule some rest days into your February calendar.
Your friend Gene and his Drs are in my prayers.

Good Morning!
This was an especially good post, I enjoyed it so much. Not only are you a wonderful writer, but a fantastic photographer as well. My mother-in-law made two of the "Hands All Around" quilts. I ended up with both of them, but I gave one of them to her oldest son. She, too, made quilts in whacky colors. I just don't "do" orange with pink or bright red, but that never stopped her! Her quilts are actually amazing. Mine are so much more tame and not as visually striking.
The lupus has shut down my sewing for the past week. I may be able to start assembly of my string quilt this week. A friend is dying of cancer and she has only weeks left. She has asked me to finish a "Grandmother's Flower Garden" after her death that she is not going to be able to finish. This will be the second "Grandmother's Flower Garden" quilt that I've done after someone's death. That is the main reason that I try to finish each of my quilts before moving on to the next one.
Enjoy February and all of your planned activities. I certainly understand how pain can slow one down.
We are due to get about a foot of snow over ice and sleet with wind chills thirty degrees below zero. ( I live in Oklahoma, not Wisconsin, but sometimes it's hard to tell the difference this winter!) The storm is to hit tomorrow. IF power stays on, I hope to be able to work a little on the string quilt this week. Sandy Gail

I'll be praying for Gene too... and for you because you care about what happens to him. Doctors are so clever today I'm sure that you can trust that they will do their best for Gene. Thinking of you!

I also love your Diane Phalen puzzles being made into a special project! I love Diane Phalen's quilt paintings. I have several calender pages of hers that I took to Hobby Lobby and had matted and framed. They add so much to my rooms. Her quilt paintings are always such peaceful and "pieceful" scenes.

Sorry you couldn't go to guild today but your body will thank you for paying attention to the message it sent. Does your guild have a web site where you can still see the show and tell? My former guild in TX does and it's a treat to see the quilts.

Gene, his family, friends, and medical staff will be in my prayers, too.

I LOVE the Hands All Around and it was so generous and kind of Joanne to share these quilts with all of you at yesterday's 1st Ever Sister's Supper. The idea for y'all to do this every month is just wonderful. The foods will be great, but the conversation, laughs, and memories made will be best.

Thank you for the information on the Diane Phalen puzzles. The ones you've made are beautiful. I look forward to seeing what your sneaky plan is!

Hugs!

What a tremendous blessing to have your sisters living nearby and to have great relationships with them! Treasure the times you spend together.

I have two sisters, my older sister is in heaven, and my younger sister is filled with angerand bitterness, and has chosen to stay out of touch. But the Lord gave me five fun sister-in-laws who live three hours away; they are always eager for a gathering!

Your Mama's color sense may have been "off," but that's what makes the quilt so lovely. I like it.

You and your friend, Gene, are in my thoughts. I am so sorry. This must be really scary for everyone involved. Hang in there.

Your February looks absolutely crazy! But it also looks like a lot of fun!

On 01/31/2011, Sandy said ...

I love your Mama's quilt and I love her sense of color! I think the quilts from that era are so pretty and colorful. Most of the quilts we make today look "planned" and I just love the "happenstance" that shows up in so many older quilts. It's like they made a whole bunch of blocks and just decided one day to put them all together and make a quilt. Voila!! My Mama has several of my great-grandmother's quilts and when I look at them I think to myself that I would never have put those colors together, but somehow it just works. Hope you're feeling better and we will all remember Gene and his family and friends in our prayers. Please keep us informed about him. Because you care, we care. Hugs to you today.

Prayers for your friend Gene and for you...

Your Mom's quilt is beautiful (color blind or not), as is the sewing basket. You have a full calendar for the month of February...let your body be your guide to what gets done and not done. I like the first monthly Sister's Supper...I love to do puzzles but have never seen these with the quilts...I like the fact that you're making pictures? out of them...and not just taking them apart and putting them back in the box. Take care...Theanne

Sorry you missed your meeting. Love your mother's quilt, must be something extra special to have something passed on to you. I have a Sunbonnet Sue quilt that one of my aunts made by hand with cardboard templates. The top is all finished but she never quilted it. I am scared to machine quilt it and unsure of my hand quilting, so I have it neatly stored in my cedar chest.

Skipper's Sketch

One day last week, I showed a sketch of Sophie that my friend Marla had created on her iPad. Well, now she has done Skipper. His is just as amazing a resemblance as Sophie's. Thanks, Marla, for these two treasures. I'm going to print them and maybe get one of those double frames for them. Here's Skipper:

Quilting in the Pink

HAPPY PINK SATURDAY

Pink Mosaic

Several years ago, I began collecting pink fabrics with the thought in mind of making a pink log cabin quilt. I now have three bins of pink fabrics--but still no pink log cabin quilt.

However, I went to my Flickr faves and found several lovely ones. Maybe one of these days I'll have one of my very own to show you.

Below are the links to the individual photos in the above mosaic.

1. Georgia's Quilt, 2. 036, 3. LILY'S QUILT - PINK LOG CABIN - Custom made for Lillian V. by DLQ, 4. Georgia's Quilt, 5. Repetition - Patchwork - 13/52, 6. Pink Log Cabin - sold, 7. Pink Half Log Cabin, 8. Pink Log Cabins, 9. Detail of the Log Cabin

I'm linking to Beverly's Pink Saturday Celebration. If you're a fan of pink, like me, you might like to pay her a visit and see all the pink treasures.

What pretty inspiration. I also love pink quilts. Sometime I'll have to do a post about the lovely pink quilt I made with my quilting buddy. I have a different pink one in the works that will have a diagonal setting, but that one is still in separate blocks and setting triangles yet.

What cheerful and delightful pink quilts to inspire us all! I've never made a pink quilt either but have made 3 that are pink/green - and two of those are on my UFOs list. Perhaps a pink quilt will be in your creative future this year?

Happy Pink Saturday to you!

Hugs!

What Happened to Mr. Linky?

I preposted the UFO Report entry below last light before I went to bed and set it to post this morning. I put Mr. Linky at the end of the post, just as I said. Now this morning I find Mr. Linky has flown the coop. So I did it again, and Mr. Linky should be available now.

Just to check and be sure he was working, I entered Stephanie's (Mama Pea) link. Trouble is, I got it entered twice (and spelled it incorrectly once) and now I have to figure out how to delete one.

Anybody think I might need to get me a copy of this book?

Blogging-for-dummies-book-cover

So, anyway, scroll down to the next blog post to read all about the UFO busting that has been going on this week.

UFO Bust: Week 4 Progress

UFO Rep

I didn't finish anything this week. But I did deliver two tops to the quilter, as I said before. And I cut more than half of the strips for the Bunny Quilt log cabin blocks. The pattern designer named this quilt "Garden Bunnies." I think I'm naming mine "Mr. McGregor's Garden."

BARBARA'S PROGRESS

This week, Barbara took five borders off of  her Tree of Life quilt (photo below), so named for the panel in the middle.

Barb1b

"It's strange seeing the quilt small again," says Barbara. (photo below).  "The borders were taken off because that yellow floral border called too much attention to itself,  I'd done too much detail sewing around the center panel to let the yellow stay, and the colors in the center of the quilt were more muted than the colors in those outer borders."

Barb1

Barbara also made another little quilt for the Ami Simms Quilt Project (photo below), using a block she made in 1995. Although Barbara didn't list this block on her UFO list, it qualifies nonetheless. To learn more about the Ami Simms Quilt Project, a project to raise alzheimer awareness and fund research of the disease, click on the link above. These little quilts will go to the Houston Quilt Festival to be sold there.

Barb2

Below is Mr. Linky. Please register your blog post if you have a progress report or thoughts about the UFO Bust.

Any of you blogless busters are welcome to send me your photos and reports each Thursday. So far, Barbara is the only one to do so. I'd like to hear from more of you who don't have blogs.

Susan, you sound (write) as if you are feeling better today. Hope that is the case.
At sewing class this evening, we made bags for Africa. A local church packaged up 100 fabric bags filled them with toiletries and delivered them last year. The bags were a bigger hit then the supplies. This year they are hoping to supply 500 bags of goodies. It made my heart happy to know we could do something so small to bring happiness to someone who has nothing.
No UFO to share. I'm still plugging along with my Dear Jane quilt. Row J, block 2! Have a happy Friday. Pat McDonald

Good News at Last!

N1069156779_30383204_1651324 After all the sorrow and worry of the past week, finally some good news arrived this morning. My handsome grandson Jesse got a job! He has been looking for almost two years without success and has had to make do with small jobs he could pick up now and then. But this is a real job with a salary and everything. We are a happy family this morning. Thank you, God.

Y'all be sure to visit Debra's Design studio again this morning. She already has Barbara's quilt top quilted and it looks beautiful. She also made a table runner out of some of the blocks that Barbara sent her. Two beautiful pieces for the Special Olympics silent auction. Good work, Barbara and Debra. And thanks again, Debra, for working with us to help find good homes for some of our UFOs.

Get-attachment.aspx Look what my talented friend Marla sent me. If you've been reading my blog for long, I don't have to tell you who this is. Marla sketched Sophie on her iPad, no less. I can't even sketch with paper and pencil. She says she's working on a sketch of Skipper, so I'm not going to show him Sophie's pic till he gets one too. That little dog is so jealous of anything Sophie gets. I always buy two rawhide bones so that they'll each have one to chew. But I have to stand guard while Sophie chews. Skipper wants to hoard all the bones for himself.

I didn't feel like sewing yesterday, so I finished another Diane Phalen puzzle and ordered two more. I can't wait to have them all done and show you what I'm planning to do with them.

Little Green Man Quilter Logo Note to UFO Busters: Remember that tomorrow is Progress Report Day. If you have anything to show and/or tell, please be sure to add your link to the Mr. Linky that will appear on this blog tomorrow morning. In fact, even if you don't have anything to show, you can add your link and just tell us what you're working on, or thinking of working on, or not working on. As I have said many times, this is a no-stress, no-pressure project.

Cheers for Jesse's job!!!!!!!!!!! I hope it's one that suits his talents and interests, but a regular salary is a good place to start!

Where do you find the Diane Phalen puzzles?

I LOVE all the work Debra did on the row quilt and the table runner!!!

What a great drawing Marla did of Miss Sophie! I look forward to seeing Skipper's portrait. You can get one of those book-like picture frames for two!

I meant to ask yesterday ... how is Gene doing? Hope and pray that there's good news from him, too.

My Thursday report is already in your IN box but it's amazing for me to be early two weeks in a row. This might not keep up. Will send you an update if I happen to do anything of note this afternoon.

Hugs!

Some Stuff About Quilts

6a00d8341cbb0053ef0147e1c7525a970b-800wi

Be sure to check out Debra's Design Studio to see what she has done so far with one of the UFO donations that Buster Barbara sent her. Debra is finishing the quilt up and passing it on to a high school Special Olympics programs for their silent auction.

Kudos to both Barbara and Debra for this one.

In the last couple of weeks I had let my kitchen become cluttered, especially my tables. Yesterday, I straightened everything up, separated all mail and paper into categories, tossed what needed tossing, filed what needed filing, and paid all the bills that were hiding in the clutter.

6601_Welcome_Quilt_Jigsaw_Puzzle_pmd I also Mod Podged another puzzle. (I've done two now.) I have several Diane Phalen jigsaw puzzles with quilts incorporated into their design. I have a plan for these, but I'm going to let it be a surprise for when I've finished them.

The picture on the left shows the puzzle I just finished Mod Podging. There are many, many quilt puzzles by Diane. I hope to finish most of them for my secret project.

Imageoutput.php
This is the one I'm working on putting together now.

Diane-Phalen-Jigsaw-Puzzles-300x300
This is one I don't have yet. Diane's quilt puzzles all show scenes of one of the four seasons with quilts incorporated into the art.

***

1023445l I was watching Eleanor Burns on PBS the other day teaching her Delectable Mountains quilt design. I fell in love with the quilt and almost ran to my sewing room right then and there to see if I could find some fabrics to make it. But I got control of myself and reminded me that I had vowed to finish all my UFOs before starting another project. But I am putting it on my list of projects to make in 2012.

Before I close, I want to thank all of you for your well wishes and prayers lately. I've had a tough winter physically (and winter has a while to go yet). And with all the tragedies and crises of the past week, I was down for a few days. And while I don't claim to have sprung back all the way yet, I am feeling better and more productive. Andy reminded me that everything will be all right and that Spring is on the way.

I'm so glad that you are feeling a little better Susan - I've been worrying about you and saying some prayers too. When you are in pain yourself and it's sometimes a real struggle to get through the day I can imagine all the bad news must make it so much harder. Watching people you care about suffer is harder than suffering yourself sometimes. It's good to see that you're still full of ideas and enthusiasm my friend!
best wishes to over there from over here!

We woke up to more snow, quite unusual for this area (Nashville TN) We have had snow almost every week since the middle of Dec. Can't wait to see the tree budding and the flowers popping up out of the soil. Then shortly after that I'll be wishing for cooler weather.
Good to hear from you and that you are able to get up and move around.

Hi!

I'm delighted with how Debra finished this quilt top!! Applause!

In years past, I've had several of Diane Phalen's wall calendars and love every picture. I was unaware there are jigsaw puzzles available. What fun!

You know, as great as it is to get UFOs completed, I decided I need one new project to energize me so that's what I'm doing as I deal with the UFOs. Might the beautiful Delectable Mountains quilt that is calling to you just be the energizer you need?

So glad you're feeling somewhat better. Take good care to baby yourself for as long as you need to.

Hugs!

Those puzzles are lovely, I love barn quilts and am still sad on our cross country trip we didn't venture through Iowa where there is an abundance of them. How many pieces are the puzzles? One of my girls loves them and needs something more challenging. Oh and kudos to you for not starting anything new! That's an admirable thing.
My thoughts are still with you, I know you are going through an abundance of difficult times. I wish I had the right words, but I don't so in my thoughts you will stay.

Hope your feel-better lasts! In one of the quilt publications, I saw a Log Cabin to in pinks and blues, and I want to make one so bad! But I'm sticking to the UFOs, am now working on the half-quilted leaf quilt. I've finally re-learned the knack of holding that little sharp needle and keeping the thimble on my finger. Maybe it'll be done by next Christmas!

Our nosy kitty - my daughter's nosy kitty - just deconstructed a puzzle she's working on. Even tried to eat one of the pieces, so that may be where an obvious missing piece went - to kitty's stomach. (This is a dollar store puzzle, still you want all the pieces there!) Seems as if a lot of folks are doing puzzles lately, or maybe because we are, just noticing it more. I recently bought one with abirdhouse/quilt/redbird design. It may be one I'll Mod Podge, if we can keep Lucy away. Glad you are feeling better!

Hi Susan. It's been awhile since I visited. Hope you are doing ok. Love your post about the quilt that Barbara & Debra made a reality! I just love jigsaw puzzles. I haven't done one in years but I love anything Diane Phalen does. I used to love those jigsaw puzzles with lots of details (like an old country market) fun to look for hidden items. The little details made it fun. I can barely get my quilts quilted, but would love to start a jigsaw puzzle! LOL I envy your dedication to NOT start a new project until you finish a UFO. I need to find that gumption so bad!!

Looking for Something to Smile About

Monster Doggie And I found this. It's a little doggie ornament I found on sale at Hobby Lobby just before Christmas. I decided to not put it away but keep it hanging in my kitchen. It reminds me of a wonderful book I read a while back entitled Lives of the Monster Dogs. It's a wonderful book, and the doggies are not monsters at all, but great characters that you'll come to love. Click on the link to go to Amazon and read about it if you like.

The book has been compared to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and maybe with just reason. But while I'm a fan of Shelley's book, I think Monster Dogs is better. Maybe that's because I like doggies more than people--especially sewn together people and those who do the sewing.

N17634
The bad news continues to pour in. If my count is right, I have now heard of: 1 friend who has passed away, 2 friends who have been diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses, 1 elderly friend who suffered a fall and an injury and was not found for two days, 1 friend's husband who is being sent home from hospital today with hospice care--and that's just since Saturday. I'm starting to panic every time the phone rings now.

As you can see, I did manage to hobble up the stairs to the computer this morning. The fatigue is better at least. And, for this present moment, the pain seems better as well.

In UFO news, I delivered two quilt tops (Noah and Charisma) to my local long-arm quilting friend Lena yesterday. Lena wasn't there, so I visited with Angela, her assistant. Lena was at the hospital with her husband Roy. He's the one who is being sent home today with hospice care. Roy, a very sweet and funny man, has been battling cancer for about 15 years now. His battle is coming to an end.

Bunny Quilt

This will be the next project in my UFO stash that I'll be tackling. I'm hoping I might have it ready for my quilters guild's quilt show this coming June, but that remains to be seen. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know that I have all my bunny blogs hand appliqued and hand embroidered. I have some of the log cabin blocks cut out, but none of them pieced. The finish should go fair quickly with the piecing, but I so want to hand quilt this one, and I'm not sure I can do that before June. But maybe.

Thank you all who have commented and sent me good thoughts. What in the world would we do without our friends, both online and off?

Hi Susan,

Hope you've got the warm day and sunshine we have today.

How can a dog book be compared to "Frankenstein"? Since I don't like scary books, this may remain a puzzlement to me.

I'm so sorry for the bad news that is coming from all directions. As Mae West said, "Getting old isn't for sissies." and perhaps one reason is that our many friends age with us and all too many of them slip away before we're ready - as if we'd ever be ready. Hugs. Prayers for all, everywhere.

I've always liked your appliqued and embroidered bunnies so much but don't remember ever seeing a picture of how they'll go together. I love the pattern. This little quilt will have such personality!

Not one to stick to any one project for long, I'm quilting a 2nd itty bitty quilt for the Ami Simms project and have fabrics pulled and paired to make a little Valentine's quilt similar to the table-topper quilt Nicole made.

Be good to you!

Hugs!

Barbara, Monster Dogs isn't really a scary book although it is quite magical and haunting. It's about another mad scientist (a bit like Shelley's) who creates a race of dogs who walk upright and speak, have hands that work, etc. And very, very good book.

On 01/25/2011, Joanne Cage said ...

Working on UFOs, and seeing your lovely bunny quilt--I want to make half-a-dozen new ones instead of finishing something! I finished one project, but when I try to finish hand-quilting the leaf quilt, I can hardly even hold the little needle. Mrs. Engle or somebody said, "We get too soon old and too late smart."

Empathy for our friends who are stricken--I too have several.

Thanks for the book recommendation. It sounds like something really different to shake up my reading.
Life gets difficult in clumps, it seems. January can make it even harder to process the hurt, I think - they long, winter days. Losing family and friends is certainly one of the tougher things to deal with, and as time goes on, we have more snags to cope with. Treat yourself, even if you think that it may not be the right thing to do. Make yourself as happy as you can :)

Oh Susan, I truly am sorry to hear about your friends. Cancer is such a painful, terrible disease. The cure can make one so sick and fill like they are dying. As I've mentioned before, my dad beat his perotid cancer this past year. (Really amazing for someone who is 91 to make it threw the surgery and then radiation!) My beautiful sister has been battling throat and tongue cancer for over a year. She just got the results from her latest pet scan and has a cluster of tumors in her throat. Not good news. She has the most optimistic attitude and is more concerned for everyone else. I love my sister. I said a prayer for you and your friends. May the Lord strengthen each of you. Someone recommended a book to me and said it would make me feel really good. It is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I'll pick it up this week. If you can wait another week for me to finish it I will mail it to you. Are you interested? Blessings. Pat McDonald

Interesting you mention Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" as that book, read by my 18 year old daughter only last fall, who had never read a book in her life, who, (gasp), 'hated' to read, triggered a love of reading and ranks as her all-time-favorite book...and now she always has a book in her hands! Your bunnies so mind me of Beatrix Potter's "Peter Rabbit"! They are adorable and beautifully done! My regards concerning your dear friends and loved ones who are suffering... and for you.

Wishing and Hoping and Thinking and Praying*

A-friend

Congrats to all of you Little Green Quilters and other UFO Busters who scored busts this week. I enjoyed visiting your blogs and seeing what you've done. Keep up the good work. And if you haven't made a bust yet, take heart. The year is young; you can do it.

This has not been a good weekend. Yesterday I got the news that a very dear friend and neighbor has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. I can do nothing but think of him and his family and pray for them. He is one of Vann's best buddies and one of the sweetest men you'll ever know. He'll be undergoing biopsy surgery on Tuesday. Please keep my friend Gene in your thoughts and prayers.

I don't think I'll be going to church this morning. Fibromonster has been dancing a jig on my body, and he refuses to even turn the music down. In addition to all the regular fibro-symptoms, the mitral valve thing has kicked in and my heart has been acting as rhythm section for FM's dance music. So I think I'll just go back to bed for a while. If all doesn't get a little better soon, I'll be seeing my doctor this week.

Have a good Sunday, everyone. And happy busting to all you UFO Busters.

*Thanks to Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick for the perfect lyric to describe how I feel today.

UFO Bust: Week 3 Progress

It isn't completely busted. I'm going to take it to the long-arm quilter next week. Just don't feel like driving to Centerpoint today. After it's quilted, I'm going to bind it with the rainbow fabric (bias cut) and add a label. Then I'll deliver it to my church to be hung in the nursery.

The Noah's Ark quilt is so bright and beautiful! You did a wonderful job on it. I used to have some of that stripe fabric. It is such a great rainbow-like fabric that really goes with the ark theme. Barbara is really busting those UFO's! Great job Susan and Barbara.

The day that I finished my "Wheel of Mystery" quilt, I decided to make a string quilt like the Heart Strings quilts. I had never made one. The blocks are all made and on my design wall. I will start the quilt assembly today or tomorrow. I plan to quilt it on my sewing machine. It will just be used as a nap quilt. It was a no brainer after making the "Wheel of Mystery" with all that curved piecing. Keep on busting, ladies! I shall enjoy reading all about your efforts.

I have a question. What is the difference between a bias cut binding and a regular cut binding. I was under the impression a bias cut was used on a scalloped edge and a regular cut was used on a straight edge but I'm reading where more people are using a bias cut. So I quess the question is why are you using a bias cut? Thanks
Marge

On 01/21/2011, Susan Ramey Cleveland said ...

Marge, normally I would use an on-grain cut for my binding. It's much easier to work with unless you're working with curves. However, I want the stripes in my binding for this quilt to run diagonally. For that effect, I will have to cut the bias strips on the bias. Hope this explanation helps.

Taming the Monster

Little Green Monster I spent yesterday on the couch trying to get that snarky old fibromonster under control. Didn't get much else done. Well, I did get the throws that cover my big chair laundered. They were beginning to smell snarky themselves from the lounging of dogs.

I feel a little bit better today. Slept better last night, having taken my ibuprofen before going to sleep instead of getting up in the middle of the night to take it.

It's cold and rainy and foggy this morning. I'm sure the weather isn't helping. But there's not a thing I can do about that. Last night, the weather forecaster mentioned that we might have more snow tonight.

Would love to get some more UFO work done today, but I don't know.

Remember that tomorrow is UFO Progress Report day. I'll have Mr. Linky posted first thing in the morning for those of you with blogs who have progress to report. Blogless Busters should email your progress photos and reports to me for posting. So far, I haven't received anything from you BBs. I'll check again later today to see if anything has come in. Don't want to miss anyone.

Am glad you're feeling some better and hope you have good soup in the 'fridge, hot chocolate in the pantry, a good book to read, and movies to watch if you choose to do so. Will your hands let you knit or embroider?

I forgot to cheer you on for finishing the Noah top and I look forward to seeing it tomorrow. Cheers! Well done!

Hugs!

Sorry you haven't been feeling well, but happy you don't have to wake up in the middle of the night now. Hope the weather gets better for you soon.
I will be posting some UFO stuff tomorrow finally. This whole thing is fun, getting stuff done. I like that feeling. lol

He Came Out Last Night

Bed_10d04

Do all children have this fantasy, the monster under the bed? And what is the psychological origin of it?

When I was a kid, I was sure a wolf lived under my bed. I wasn't too much afraid of him coming out. So long as I didn't hang my arm or leg over the side of the bed, I would be safe, I thought. To this day, I still don't hang my limbs off the bed.

But the monster under my bed is no longer a wolf. He's the dreaded Fibromonster. And last night he came out and got me. He left my entire body in pain and me without the ability to hold onto anything. I have dropped and thrown half a dozen items already this morning, including the telephone handset--not altogether a bad thing. A previous drop had caused the handset to fly apart. I was never able to get the back all the way back on. Well, this drop fixed that. The handset is now back to normal--as long as I don't touch it again.

This is one of those days when I'd stay in sipping tea and staring at the tv if not for the fact that I must go to the store. We are all out of Iams dog food and running low on International Delight coffee creamer. Monster or no monster, we will have our necessities.

I'll take my ibuprofen and get in the jacuzzi tub first and see if I can bubble away some of the pain and stiffness. Then after a quick trip to Walmart, it's back to the couch for me.

I finished the Noah's Ark quilt top last night. I'll show you on Friday. It's ready for quilting, which I'm going to hire out to one of my long-arm quilter friends. I think I'll work on the Bunny Quilt next. I'd like to have it ready for my guild's quilt show in June. But since I really want to hand quilt it, that's probably not possible.

Look what I found on UFO Buster Lynn's blog. This looks like a fantastic way to make not only pinwheels but also half-square triangle squares for any project

Ohhhhhh! Your picture of the monster under the bed accurately shows what I imagined when I was a little child. I was also careful not to hang arm or leg over the edge of the bed as I'd certainly be gobbled up then! Sorry the FibroMonster now resides under your bed and I hope you find a way to banish him forever.

Do you need any comfort foods, prescriptions, microwave heating pads, or OTC pills while you're there getting the Iams?

How cool is that method of making 4 matching HSTs?! wonder if the bias edges would be a bother? These blocks would have to be sewed together and one binding put on or sashed before becoming a UFO!

Hugs!

I just came across this method for pinwheels and I am using it now. It works fabulously and is going very quickly. It is also very accurate. I cut 5" inch strips width of fabric and then matched the strips right sides together and then cut the strips in 5" squares. I then chain pieced the squares sewing down one side through several squares and then down the other side and so forth and then cut them apart. All I can say is WOW... you will love this.

Got all the comfort stuff, Barbara.
In the video, the lady says that to solve the bias issue, spray the pieces with spray starch or sizing.

I had forgotten--my daughter thought there was a crocodile underneath the couch, and the cat would protect her.

Yesterday I bought an electric stapler (because some young man standing there told me it would work great for those with arthritis; he'd gotten his mom one) while at Lowes. I tried that thing, something wasn't working right. But the pain that caused in a previous thumb surgery is about to do me in. Yet here I sit, typing... I took the darned thing back this morning and note to self: never purchase another. That project is done for.

Not to worry, that beautiful Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt in the "monster" photo will make that old monster feel calmer. Quilts have a way of comforting all of us. May your fibro feel a little less monster-like just by your body being surrounded by all your beautiful quilts. Thanks for wonderful blog posts, even when you are in pain. Love ya! Sandy Gail

On 01/18/2011, Linda said ...

Yes I had a fear of monsters lurking where ever there were dark places...under the bed...closets. LOL! I love those tutorials. They are the best. MSQC has tons that are so good!

On 01/18/2011, Tonya said ...

I used to be afraid of sharks under my bed. I was forced to watch jaws when I was little and it took me years to get over it!!

That video is Jenny. I live near her and she is super sweet! She has lots of great ideas..check out her other you tube videos.

P.S. To make a four patches put two squares right sides together, sew up two opposite sides, cut from top to bottom right down the middle and then again side to side. There you have it!

Regret your "fibro" pain Susan...hope the Ibuprofen and jacuzzi tub helped ease your "wolf." I still don't like hanging my hands or feet over the side of the bed...waiting for the cold grasping hand of the "monster of the dark" to grab me LOL The pinwheel tutorial was excellent, I don't quilt (have wanted to in the past) and with this quick and easy method of sewing the pinwheels...PERHAPS a small quilt for my granddaughter!

On 01/18/2011, Ann Marie said ...

This is perfect, I have 600 HST's to make for a mystery quilt I am making, Thanks for sharing, and I hope your fibro mellows out and hides back under the bed for good.

On 01/19/2011, Sandy said ...

The monster picture is what a imagined "my" monster would look like --- even now I don't hang my arms and legs off the edge of the bed...
Do you think fibro is affected by the barometric pressure? I know mine is affected by the weather and me trying to do WAY to much during the day..my DH keeps reminding me "you're 60 years old, you can take a nap when you feel like it" but that's never been me, I always have so many other things I wish to accomplish. Hope you have a great day.

Another Movie Night

MV5BMTYwMjg4OTQwOF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDA0MTQ2Mw@@._V1._SY317_ Last night, Andy came by and brought me a movie DVD that she had rented from Red Box, one I had never heard of: "A Dog Year" starring Jeff Bridges and an adorable border collie. This HBO movie is based on a book by writer Jon Katz.

This time, I had a little less trouble getting the movie to play (but only a little less), and Skipper didn't throw up.

The film is full of occasions for laughter and tears. (I always cry when watching dog movies.) Jeff is awesome in his portrayal of Katz who adopts an abused dog named Devon. The border collie brings more problems into Jon's already troubled life (which we don't get the full details of in the movie), but Devon also brings healing and change. It's sort of a "Marley and Me" with less damage.

This movie made me determined to read the book. I can't wait.

After a weekend free of any kind of UFO busting, I'm going to get back to work today. I really enjoyed Friday's posts by all you busters. It's fun and inspiring seeing what everyone else is doing--or not doing.

If you don't have a blog and have something you want to post pertaining to the bust, email it to me by Thursday at suscleve@aol.com. You blogging busters will find another Mr. Linky on Friday for linking to your blog post.

Pinky Dinks

Pink2

It's Pink Saturday over a Beverly's How Sweet the Sound Blog. So I've been running around the house this morning trying to find something pink that I haven't already shown. I've shown these in different settings, I'm sure. But even I have only so much pink.

I love the little figurine. My sweet Aunt Edna (really my aunt by first marriage) gave it to me. The dried rosebud that the children are holding is from Andy's bouquet at her wedding many, many years ago. I'm afraid to touch it, afraid it will crumble.

Piink1

The above photo shows some of my thrift store finds, every single thing in that photo, save the wall paint, came from the thrift store. Well, except for the plate and saucer, which came from a yard sale.

THE DUDE OR THE DUKE?

LargeThumbnail

That's it for pink today. I want to tell you about our book club meeting yesterday--the best one in a long time. Almost everyone was there, and we had a high old time discussing True Grit--the book and both movies. It was a lively discussion with no one dominating. It seemed everyone loved the book and both movies--with some people being partial to the John Wayne version and some to the Jeff Bridges version. I think the Jeff version is my favorite. But I saw the Duke version so long ago that I don't remember much. So I checked out a video recording of it yesterday before I left the library and plan to watch it today.

One interesting difference, to me at least, that I noticed right off, is that Jeff's Rooster wears his eye patch on his right eye while John Wayne's Rooster wore his on his left. Wonder why the difference? And of course, Wayne is clean shaven while Jeff has a scruffy old beard, which makes him appear infinitely more Rooster-like to me.

If you haven't seen this new movie yet, I recommend it highly. And look for it to garner Oscar nominations and likely some wins. And if you haven't read the book by Charles Portis, do it. It's wonderful.

UFO Bust: Week 2 Progress

Cat afg

Well, here's mine. Not much, actually. Just a few rows of the Kitty Cat Afghan. I swear, I'll never make anything else where you have to work with all those balls of yarn at once. Makes me nervous; I don't like it.

I'm about halfway finished with the piece. I started it way back in the late 90s when I was still working. This is a Vanna White afghan book that we published at Oxmoor House and I edited. When I saw that Rex the Cat afghan, I immediately ordered the yarn from Lion Brand and started it. But it didn't take me long to tire of all those balls of yarn flopping around.

Lap_quilt

I did, however, with no effort whatsoever, bust one of my UFOs clean gone this week. If you'll recall from the rules, donating or giving away a project to someone to finish is the same as finishing it yourself. Gone is gone.

I donated the above top to Debra at Debra's Design Studio. She will finish it in whatever way she choses and pass it on to a women's shelter. This is an ongoing project for Debra. She has donated many quilts to women shelters. She has made us the offer that if we have any UFOs that we don't want to finish, she'll gladly take them. Barbara has already donated some things for Debra's shelter projects. If you'd like to do the same, leave Debra a message on her blog, or email me and I'll send you her email address.

*BARBARA'S PROGRESS*

Get-attachment.aspx

Above is UFO Buster Barbara's progress photo for this week. Barbara is one of our members who doesn't blog. She calls this 37" square quilt "Scrappy Stars," and says she chose it as her first bust because it would be the fastest. She only had to bind it and add her label and, voila, busted! Below is what Barbara has to say about the history of this beautiful piece.

"Scrappy Stars started as a Brown Bag project in my guild in Waco, TX.  Anyone who chose to participate could make any center no larger than 80" perimeter or circumference measure, put it in a brown bag with fabric (optional) and up to 5 instructions for the 3 guild members who would host their center over the next 3 months.  The instructions could be "keep it summery", "no orange" or whatever.  Each participant took someone else's bag home, added a border, and brought it back to the next guild meeting 4 weeks later.  At the end of the swap, it was common for the maker not to recognize her quilt center!"

**If you have a progress report for us this week, please post it on your blog (if you like) and then leave your link on Mr. Linky below.

And if you are one of our blogless members and have a progress photo and/or report, be sure to email it to me by Thursday of the week you'd like me to post it.**

Hi Susan ~ You know, now that I've started the scarf again
I'm wondering WHY I ever stopped knitting it to begin with!! It's just
like any big cleaning job...the task seems daunting but after it's over and done with I wonder why I didn't do it sooner!!!

I think I'm going to have fun finishing LOTS of these projects!! (along with adding in some new ones though!).

I thought that Linky was suppose to leave a thumbnail photo too. But it didn't. This is my first time to use Mr. Linky, and I guess I have some more studying to do.

I admire you for even attempting the project that requires several balls of yarn...just the thought of more than one ball of yarn makes me anxious...*smile* What you've finished is quite beautiful. I like that a Women's Shelter can find a use for unfinished quilts...I hadn't thought about that. I'm enjoying seeing and hearing about the progress everyone is making with their UFOs, now if I'd just get up and finish mine...

No guilt allowed, Stephanie. That's one of the implied rules of the Bust.

The afghan is single crochet (not knitted), the easiest stitch there is.

On 01/14/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

Haven't gotten to the post office yet so my package of three UFOs (one borderless quilt top, one table runner, and one wall hanging size) aren't outta here yet. Wrapped for mailing, yes. Gone, no.

Crochet flummoxes me as much as knitting does. You go, girl!

Thanks for posting my Scrappy Stars photo. I forgot to mention that the center I made is from the book "Little Quilts" by Berg, et al. My center that went into the brown bag includes the green border. I also added the outer two borders to calm that busy middle!

The two bindings I made this week are still in two coils rather than being on the quilts. No guilt!

Hugs!
