Mag Review

Thurs1  Can't visit much this morning--got places to go. But I did want to show you a little bit of the newest issue of Love of Quilting magazine. I think it's the best one they've done in several issues. I saw several projects I'd love to make, especially the Irish Chain quilt. I just love that one.

If you haven't already seen it, I hope you enjoy this little preview.

Thurs5

Thurs4

Gerald Roy's "This Old Quilt" feature is especially interesting this month. It's about Crazy Quilting.

Thurs3

Even the ads are awesome!

Must go get ready for a fun outing with my quilting friend Sally. I'm keeping it a secret for now, but I'm taking my camera. And if this turns out as great as I think it will, I'll have some goodies to show tomorrow.

Love the Triple Irish Chain and wonder if I have the stick-to-itiveness to make it. I'm about to make a Single Irish Chain with my pansy fabric.

You tease us with your hints of a mysterious outing with Sally the Quilter. I'll look forward to photos. Have fun!

Oh, Kai! You have what it takes: the wish to do it! I long felt the pull toward quilts and quilting and at age 41, my boss was a quilter who showed me it's easier than it looks. REALLY! Hie thee to a quilt shop for beginner lessons. Every quilter was once a beginner!

Hugs!

My mother has a crazy quilt that was quilted by my great grandmother.. I want to say. Perhaps it was older and younger, grandmother, or great great grandmother. We use it as a table cloth every Christmas. I love it.

Hi Susan,

The Great Castle Oaks Armadillo Chase

800px-Nine-banded_ArmadilloThanks for all your suggestions as to what might be making the holes in my yard. I've decided that those of you who suggested the armadillo were right. I know we have them in this neighborhood. There are some really funny stories I could tell about armadillo hunts in the 'hood. And I believe I will tell one of the funniest.

Our friend Bob on the street behind us has one of the prettiest lawns in the neighborhood, and he works very hard to keep it that way.

A couple of years back, he noticed these holes appearing in his yard and knew immediately that he had armadillo problems. (Those of you who are gun shy might want to stop reading now.) Bob, being irate about his yard, decided to stage an ambush. Not being a shooter, Bob had to borrow a gun from Vann, a 22 pistol as I recall. Bob stayed up several nights, sitting on his deck, waiting for Mr. Armadillo. He saw the little fellow a couple of times but could never draw a bead on him.

After about a week of this, Bob invited some neighborhood guys to make the third watch with him. So they all gathered on Bob's deck to stage the armadillo ambush. 'Long about midnight, Vann got tired and came home. But the next day, Gene told him the whole story of what went down after he left.

Mr. Armadillo did indeed show up. By that time, I think Bob had had a couple of Buds and was also exhausted from several nights with little sleep. He determined to get that little beast not matter what. So, in sock feet no less, Bob ran out into the night chasing the armadillo through the woods behind his house, getting off several shots as he ran, and yelling, "Get the hoe, Marybeth," (Marybeth being his wife). I think Gene and the others who were present hit the deck, literally, in fear of stray bullets.

Bob finally returned without having nabbed the 'dilla to find Marybeth standing there with hoe in hand. Bob's only comment was, "I didn't know those things could run so fast."

That night all the men in the neighborhood decided that Bob's best bet (and safest for all concerned) for his armadillo problem was a Have-a-Heart trap. So Bob gave Vann his pistol back and set the trap. He caught a couple of squirrels and, as I recall, even one kitty cat in that Have-a-Heart. But to this day, that armadillo has eluded him.

Sophie and I have decided to just leave our armadillo alone and let him dig. It gives Sophie that many more scents to sniff every morning.

Tuesday Tidbits

Garden1  I've wracked my brain this morning (poor brain, doesn't it have enough trouble without being wracked?) and haven't come up with a thing to blog about. So I took my camera and Sophie outside for some possible blog fodder. Sophie immediately disappeared, as did the sun. I got a few photos anyway, and tried to cheer them up with my photo editing program, but they still look pretty glum.

Garden2  Wal-Mart had some beautiful foxgloves a couple of days ago, so I bought two pots full. I haven't planted them yet. Got to get to that today or tomorrow. Probably tomorrow.

I must report that I did do some decluttering in the basement yesterday--and fell off a stool. No I wasn't standing on it; I was sitting, with both feet on the floor. I leaned over to get a shirt out of a plastic bin, and the darn thing scooted out from under me. Another visit from Vann, do you think? I mean, it's his stool and his basement and his clothes I was removing from his plastic bin. You tell me.

But I was unharmed for the most part. I am a little stiff and sore this morning, but that's really no different from any other morning. Anyway, here are the other pics I shot this cloudy morning.

Garden3 I found that the toolbox on the back of the little pickup truck is a great place to set two pots of pink petunias. Vann used this truck, which is in great running condition but looks a little the worse for wear, to haul yard supplies or anything   Garden4   that needed hauling that he didn't want to put in the Suburban. I decided to keep it since I need to haul things from time to time too. It's also available for any of our neighbors or friends who needs to use it. Of course, I'll move the petunias before anybody takes it for a spin.

Garden5 See the holly bushes, how big they've grown. Well, friends it hasn't been too long, they weren't big. (With apologies to Bobby Goldsboro).

When we moved into this house almost 14 years ago, they were just tiny little shrubs. We talked about moving them then, while they were manageable. And every year since, we've talked about what to do with the holly bushes. Well now, they've become truly unmanageable. They're so tall now that you have to have a ladder to prune them. There are ten of them, and they going. As soon as I can find somebody to take them up.

Garden7
HOLES!

Who or what is making holes in my yard?? I've found about a dozen of these, most of them around or near Vann's little cypress three that he and Paul planted last year. Some on the other side of the yard near the garden. What digs holes like this?

GardenCat This cat, purchased at a Mountain Brook yard sale many years ago, is due for a painting. What color should he be? I like him grey because he reminds me of my old cat Charles, the last cat that ever lived with me. He passed to the Rainbow Bridge in 1995.

Garden6

And finally, I'm collecting blue bottles (not as easy to find as one might think) for a Blue Bottle Tree in "my garden." If anyone has any blue bottles you don't want, I could use them. Just let me know and I'll tell you where to send them and even send you a surprise gift in return.

Now, it's upstairs to continue the packing up of the sewing room in preparation for painting the walls. I'm thinking a sunny yellow or robin's egg blue. What color do you think the sewing room should be?

What about painting the cat a cobalt blue?

On 04/27/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

Hummm ... deer, squirrels, groundhogs (but the holes will become deeper if it's this bothersome creature) all dig holes, too.

I vote for a pale butter or buttercream yellow to give your sewing room a cheery glow and not too much competition with the riot of colors that fabrics add.

Do the blue bottles need to have narrow necks?

Have just planted the marigolds between the tomatoes in our garden to ward off bugs.

Hugs!

Blue is a restful colour, but in a workroom you might prefer something more neutral, cream always works well :)

Susan, the holes in our lawn were dug by skunks looking for grubs. We know because one night when I was up at 2am I saw one digging. But of course it could be any kind of wild creature.

Dear Susan, One of the most popular decorators in Canada (Sarah Richardson) , chooses white for her studio, the better to view colours more carefully. I use Benjamin Moore Cloud White (CC40) whenever I can, and have never tired of it after more than 25 years. When you have time, you could see some of Sarah's design projects on HGTV.ca. The girl loves colour , but has a gift for putting a scheme together.

When I was a kid, we always heard people say anyone digging a hole was trying to dig through to China. Hmmmm??? LOL! Those flowers aren't just PRETTY, they're DELICIOUS! The armadillos here make bigger holes...almost like a burrow, big enough for them to get in to...but the also make small holes looking for worms and grubs. Katie and Josh in Homewood get holes in their front yard and we've seen the chipmunks doing it. Hampton fills the holes with leaves and little sticks and goes back in an hour and everything is pulled out. Determined little creatures.

Those Smiles Are for Real

Me & Vann

Look what just arrived by e-mail. A friend of ours, Dave, took this shortly before Vann became ill. We were at Dave's MIL's 80th birthday party. He sent this picture and another to me this morning. Thanks, Dave. This means so much to me.

Looks like I was in bad need of a haircut (as I am now), and we both were in need of shucking of few pounds, but don't we look happy? We were. There was a time in my life when I could never have imagined being as happy as I was with Vann. Neither one of us was perfect, but we gladly accepted each other's imperfections in order to share our lives with the loves of our lives. We always knew we were meant to be together.

Enough of that before I start blubbering all over the laptop.

I got my dining room furniture posted on Craig's  this morning. I'm hoping it goes fast so I won't have to worry about getting it moved into the basement when the new furniture arrives. Anybody have any other ways of advertising this furniture for sale? Do newspaper ads work?

My goal this week is to get my sewing room packed up in an organized way so that the room can be painted. If I organize as I pack, unpacking and arranging the room after it's painted should be a breeze--or at least easier than unpacking randomly packed boxes. Wish me luck.

What a wonderful photo of you and Vann - and how kind of Dave to think to send the photos to you. Sweet!

Fingers crossed that your dining set goes quickly. Have you thought of putting the word of it's availability out to neighbors, your WOW group, your quilting group, and any other group you belong to? Ask Andy to put it up on the bulletin board at work. Someone may be in need of just that dining set or want to purchase it for an adult child. You can always send it to a consignment shop, though they usually take a huge % of the profit when it sells.

Lots of good wishes for organizing your sewing room items so unpacking is a breeze.

Hugs!

Hi Susan, yes that is a lovely picture and I am so glad for you that it brings back happy memories. I too am going through the packing clearing up and preparing to paint stage. Just had living and hallway carpets removed and replaced with wooden flooring. Since all the furniture had to be moved for that we figures we might as well have the place painted so now we have it partly done, the next rooms to be done are the kitchen, dining room, the guest room (aka my studio) and the master bathroom. After that comes the bedroom and powder room - my husband's office is not being touched too many bookshelves and huge filing cabinets. Things would be so much easier if we did not have thousands of books.
Good luck with selling the furniture - can I interest you in a gate legged rosewood dining room table - just kidding - but I am trying to get rid of one - I'll probably end up donating it to the next church rummage sale.
Take care and don't overdo.

Not meaning to be negative, just concerned, but be careful with Craig's list. You never know who is going to answer your ad and I've heard some bad stories on the news. Just make sure someone else is with you if someone is coming to look at the furniture. It's so sad that this beautiful world God created has so many evil people in it and that we must always be on guard but that's the simple truth. Predators are everywhere and always dreaming up ways to take advantage of us honest people and it seems like their ideas are limitless as to the extremes they will go to. Just be careful! On a more positive note, the picture of you and Vann is quite a treasure. Remember the good times.

Dropping Spoons Along the Way

AZALEA

I had determined that, come hell or high water--no wait, that was yesterday. Anyway, I was planning to go to church today--but that was before The Great Hillside Chase of Sophie Belle Patterpaw.

This morning when we went out, I let her roam the yard while I set my potted plants back on the front porch. I had taken them in so the tornadoes wouldn't blow them away. We didn't have any tornadoes, thank you Jesus, but we did have high winds. There are leaves and small limbs all over the yard this morning. (Another job!)

But that's not the point of this post. The point is that by the time I had all my plants out, Sophie had wandered up into the back-door neighbor's yard, which is up a hill. I think I have explained to you before about people with chronic pain/fatigue issues and The Spoon Theory. I knew that if I had to climb that hill and get her, many spoons would be wasted.

So I called her, and called her, and called--and called and calledandcalledandcalled, etc. But Sophie played that little game she has called "I've gone deaf and I can't hear you, SuSu." She never played that game with Vann. I guess she thinks I'm a better playmate. Oh, sure.

There comes a point when I know that more calling and yelling would be fruitless--plus I know all the neighbors are getting annoyed with my shrieking. So I have to shut up and climb the hill and fetch my damn dog. The trouble with that is that she's not really deaf. She hears me coming, so she inches a little farther afield. And a little farther and a little farther, until she tires of the game and comes home with me.

This morning, we have inched over half the neighborhood, leaving spoons in our wake. Not only am I exhausted, I'm also in the throws of a major hot flash (yes, I still have them). The thought of taking a shower, doing my hair, putting on makeup--well, I can't even imagine it right now.

But it's a beautiful day! After all the storms of yesterday (talk about your hell and high water!), I can be nothing but grateful--even for that dog that likes to play games with me. I'm grateful for all of you too. Thanks so much for your thoughts on the dining room furniture. Sometimes I just need to hear it from somebody else. I've ordered the set, and next week I'll put my old set up for sale. It's in perfect condition with not a scratch or a mar. I'm hoping it goes fast. I'm not really experienced with selling things. I guess I'll try Craig's List. I hope to have the old set out, the dining room painted, and the carpet cleaned before the new set arrives. Which is probably impossible--but why set small goals?

Happy Sunday, everyone. I'm going to drink a glass of ice water and then see if I can find enough spoons to get me showered and off to church.

I hear you on the spoons being left all over the neighborhood as you trailed after Sophie. The spoon analogy is so very apt and the Lord knows how fatigue affects you so won't deduct any stars from your crown if you stay home to rest.

I'm glad the storm didn't create havoc for you. We've fared well, too, so far. Knock wood!

I Need Advice

D-set1

Please give me your honest opinion on this dining room set. The set I have now is way too big for my dining room, and I plan to sell it and buy a new one. While web surfing, I saw this and liked it. It isn't very formal, but for my house (and for me) that's good. I don't want a formal house. What say you?

In response to your request for advice, the MOST important thing, in my opinion, is to buy what you LOVE and in your heart you know you want. This is all about YOU and what others like best really may not be what pleases you. You need what makes you feel happy and good. I do think the furniture in the photo is lovely. In fact, I have a table that is identical or very similar to that one and I am very happy I bought it. Formal works for some people, but it's not necessarily for everyone. Do what you want, by all means. And, I wrote this because you asked. I don't like to tell people what they should do or buy or anything else.

I think it calls for the yellow house! ('take me home....') But you have to be the one it pleases. I'm like you. I'm not into fancy-shmansy. If you can get it with seat cushions you like...many places will do that to order for you. Good luck!

I think it's lovely Susan. It's not too informal, but very pretty. I think the seat covers are a little dull, but I'm sure that wouldn't be a big deal to change. I'm so glad you are making your home just the way you want it. Enjoy! (And be careful about those tornadoes!)

On 04/24/2010, Niki said ...

I love everything about it. Never even noticed that the chair seats were dull. I think going with the neutral on the seats would enable you to be more daring with your accessories. You could change things up, e.g. linens, plates, bowls, etc. and not be stuck with one color scheme.

Susan,

It's really pretty - can't tell if its by Canadel? We have a very large pedestal table from them that I love. Does it have any leaves that can be inserted? Having the flexibility to entertain a bigger crowd is helpful. Ours has an oval edge, so in a pinch, two can sit at each end - plus the 2 leaves can be inserted.

It really compliments the other changes you are making!

I have the table and chairs in your photo; I purchased them at Ashley furniture here in Canada two years ago. It is a lovely set. The chair seats are very comfortable and there is a weight to the pieces that makes them feel very solid. I have dressed it up formal but also keep it casual and it always looks nice, except for the time the chubby beagle crawled up and decided to sun herself in the middle of the table, using a table runner for her bed.

I love the set-but I have a smallish room-so I would look for something with with straight legs rather than the bulkier legs as it would give the illusion of space. I live in a tiny house, though-so every square inch counts!!! I would love to buy a house to fit this set!! It is awesome!

This is a lovely set! This only question I have is whether the table enlarges and if there is room to store any table leaf under the tabletop as some new tables do. I wish my old table had that feature.

I also vote for changing the chair seat fabric to something less like mud (it may look nicer IRL)and that matches your color scheme.

The hutch is charming!

It Was a Dark and Stormy Morn

Severe weather(2) We had rain and thunder all night. Daisy slept under the bed. She gets upset when it thunders. Like that one! It's ok, Daisy.

Sophie, on the other hand, pays no attention to thunder--except that one time when lightening struck a tree nearby and made and awful boom, which woke Sophie up from her nap. She opened her eyes and went into a fit a barking. When she was done, she lay back down and went back to sleep.

Jerry Tracey (Channel 13 meteorologist) tells us the bad stuff is yet to come. And from the looks of the online weather map, it's not far away.

We're supposed to have stormy weather all day--a very dangerous situation where F-humongous tornadoes are produced that stay on the ground for a long way. No F-0 and F-1 today, I'm afraid.

I have to get out of these pajamas and get ready to take the girls to the basement if conditions warrant. Don't want to go to the Land of Oz this morning.

Stay safe, everyone.

You stay safe, too! I'm glad you have a basement to retreat to if necessary. Hope there's comfy furniture there so you're cozy, a TV or radio for entertainment, and a phone.

Decades ago we had a dog who jumped into the bathtub when it thundered and she'd quiver and quake until the storm passed. One of our current cats heads under the nearest large piece of furniture and if she's outside, she goes under the barn and won't come into the house if it's closer. Go figure!

Hugs!

Waiting for the Weather

IRis

My yellow iris that I planted this week has presented me with its first gorgeous blossom. My sister has said I can come and get some purple ones from her yard, which I plan to do next week.

I'm beginning to enjoy this gardening thing. But just wait till the heat and humidity get here. Then it's everybody for himself, garden-wise. The weeds are probably just waiting till I'm holed up inside with the air conditioning. Then they'll begin to propagate like crazy and ruin all my hard work.

Speaking of weather, the weather people started mid-week warning us of a severe weather system that is heading our way and due to arrive tomorrow. Tornados, strong straight-line winds, and heavy rains. We need the rain, but I personally could do without the winds and tornadoes.

Our local Creek Bank Festival has been rescheduled for the following Saturday due to this impending weather. I plan to bake a rum cake for our WOW Bake Sale at the festival, so now I can put that off for another week.

So I think I'll spend today packing up the sewing room in preparation for painting. Joe said he would start upstairs and everything is ready for painting except the sewing room. Oh yeah, and the bathroom. I have to strip wallpaper in there if I want him to paint it. I still haven't decided. Wallpaper stripping isn't too terribly hard. But it does make a big old mess. It's the ugliest wallpaper ever made, so it's probably coming down. We'll see.

Beautiful flower! I'm tempted to try planting some of those. Hmmmm ... And I LOVE that speckled pot on the chair! I have a whole SET of speckled dishes from YEARS ago. They make me feel HAPPY! We are expecting ugly weather later today through early tomorrow. Ugh. I'll tell it to go RIGHT PAST LEEDS and not even THINK of disturbing my Susan! (And, my goodness, girl! WALLPAPER STRIPPING? Don't you overdo!)

On 04/23/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

Oh, should you perhaps need to take in your new porch set and put all potted flowers in the garage until the weather passes? I hear you on preferring nice rain to wind and tornadoes. Amen!

Stripping wallpaper is messy, but also so satisfying! Put some jazzy music on to play, don old clothes, get a putty knife (or two so someone can come to help!), and you'll be finished before you know it. You may have to wash the old pasted off the walls, but that's not too awful. Fortunately, bathrooms are generally small rooms!

Your yellow iris is glorious! I've found that gardening is addictive.

Hugs!

I'm hoping we don't get a lot up here in Eva! We're kinda in tornado alley. I've told my son he'll have to spend Sat. night with us (the #1 bad thing about a mobile home!). We do need the rain...if for nothing else but to wash away all this pollen!

Ideas and Acquisitions

Thrustra1l

Here's the pretty pink tray I won on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. It's even prettier in person. The color is perfect, and I love the design.

Thurs1 It's actually supposed to be a breakfast tray. But I think it looks very pretty on my dining table, so for now, that's where it will stay--along with another Ebay acquisition, a vintage tablecloth with pink daffodils.

Okey-ma-dokey. I promised to show you my other great and exciting thrift find. Are you ready? Here it is!

Thurswindow

What! That old thing? The paint's peeling and there's a pane missing. What in the world could I possibly want with that? Well, just look at the examples below that I found online of things people have done with old windows. I think with some beautiful fabric behind the panes, or a piece of an old quilt, or a collage of floral greeting cards, or an old vintage print it will be just as beautiful as these--and might someday soon hang over my mantel.

So, what do you think? Is there a possibility there? Or is it too much shabby and not enough chic?

Thurspetwhite I've made some additions to the red Coca Cola table on the front porch: a bright yellow ceramic flower pot (a la Wal-Mart) and pretty white petunias. Don't you just love petunias? I do. They're one of my favorites, probably because they're so easy to grow. My thumb is definitely a sort of puppy poop brown, so I have to go for plants that can survive a little neglect from time to time. No orchids for me.

I also bought a big yellow iris for "my garden." I planted him yesterday. He had a big bud on him when I planted him. I just looked out the window, and it looks like that bud is opening. I'll certainly post a pic later.

Thanks for all your response to my chicken post. I love hearing your thoughts and stories on chickens--or on anything actually. I found out yesterday afternoon that my neighbor Paul also has a secret desire to keep chickens. But we talked it over and decided that the neighbors would definitely not be warm to the idea. So I guess chickens are out. Too bad.

Daisy Miss Daisy Dukes has come to spend a few days with us while her folks go to Destin to celebrate their granddaughter Miss Lily's third birthday. If her mommy is reading this, she says tell you she's being very good--in spite of that mean old black dog who tries to boss her around.

Happy Earth Day, everyone. As somebody on Facebook said this morning, when we're good to the earth, we're being good to ourselves.

Love your acquisitions Susan. I know that you will do something very artistic and imaginative with the window frame. I also love chickens, but do not need the extra work of looking after them. When I was growing up I loved to feed them and collect the eggs, someone else(my Dad) did the dirty work. I really loved the baby chicks, that arrived a day old via the Royal Mail and were kept warm beside our kitchen fire.
Can't wait to get my petunias, but its not warm enough here yet.

Oh Susan, that pink tray is absolutely gorgeous and I don't say that lightly, as I really love it! Great job on the window find too cuz I love those as well! We've got one of the old windows from my Mother-in-Law's house and it's one of my all time favorite things. It was really hard trying to decide what to do with it ... we finally settled on turning it into a mirror! We took it to a mirror guy and he set individual "mirror panes" in it and I adore the way it turned out. We also have another one that I got at a craft show many yrs ago that is backed w/a piece from a very old quilt. It's another one of my favorite things :) And on the "chicken post below," I've been hearing from many many folks lately that they'd love to have chickens. I think their "colored eggs" are amazing :) Have a good day my dear ... it sure sounds like "Spring" has been good for your soul :) God Bless.

Hi Judy, I have an old window frame in our holiday home (so I can't send you a photo right now) which has a small Scherenschnitt (that is Swiss cut paper work) behind each pane. It looks wonderful! I could really imagine for example a small patchwork or embroidered square behind each pane of your window. I think that would really fit into the style of your home (from what I've seen in your photos). Great purchasing - well done you for finding it!

Speaking of flowers, may I bring to your attention "Knock-out" roses? They bloom all summer with little care and come in several colors to suit your sensibilities. We bought one and AMIL bought two!

Where the pane is missing, you could do a shadow-box in the theme of whatever you put behind the glass panes. I like it as is, just clean it up and put some kind of clear stuff over the wood to keep the paint from flaking off.

The tray is beautiful on your table!

I Want Chickens

Preening_chickens_lg

When I was a child, we lived in the country, and my mama kept chickens. My sister and I loved those chickens so much that sometimes we even baptized them to assure their eternal salvation--or just to aggravate them, I'm not sure which.

When Mama ceased keeping chickens and sold them all, there was one hen who was "sitting," meaning she had a nest of eggs about to hatch (actually, we called it "settin'"). We brought those eggs into the house and coddled them under and light bulb. Only one of them hatched. (Insert shark music from "Jaws" here.)

Satc_FULL We raised that little feathered friend as a pet, and as an only chicken, he became spoiled rotten. That little yellow fellow turned into the meanest little bantam rooster that ever pecked his way out of an egg. Although he was a pure pet, he was also a demon, a poultry-geist. We could no longer play with him for all his pecking. He would actually hide behind bushes and buildings and jump out on you as you walked by, pecking and flogging. We definitely had a love/hate relationship with little...what was his name now? I don't remember.

Before he got to be a hellion, we would take him on picnics and fishing trips. He had his own little cage that he traveled in. Once at our location, we would let him out and he'd go around pecking for bugs and worms until time to go home. He even traveled with us once to Tullahoma, Tennesse, to visit my aunt and uncle and cousins.

When he got so mean and so big that everyone was afraid to venture out of the house and he held us virtual hostages, Daddy made a deal with a friend to trade that chicken for some rabbits. My sister and I cried. "They'll kill him!" we bawled. So Daddy made the man who took him promise not to kill him. (At least that's what he said; but we heard a couple of days later that our chicken served as Sunday dinner soon afterwards, having put a particular hurt some member of the family.)

Even though he was a vicious little foul, and I'm sure he deserved what he got, I've always remembered that little bantam with fondness.

Chickenhouse2And I've always wanted to keep chickens, like Mama did. If I thought the neighbors wouldn't object or the free-ranging dogs wouldn't have my girls for supper, I'd build me a henhouse. It wouldn't be just a utilitarian henhouse like Mama had. I'd put my girls in very fashionable digs, like this one I found at Jill's Hickory Hollow blog. A wall-papered henshouse with antique-white nesting boxes! Did a hen ever have such cozy accommodations? Jill even hung cross-stitched art on the wall. Now that's the kind of henhouse I want.

Chickenhouse3

I went surfing and found that Jill isn't the only one who thinks her girls deserve a pretty house. I found charming henhouses and chicken coops all over the internet. Below are a few of my favorites. Be sure to click on Jill's link above to see more of her darling little Victorian henhouse.

When Lloyd showed his babies on his Facebook page, my desire for chickens renewed itself. I bet if I built a pretty little chicken house like the ones in the pictures, the neighbors wouldn't object. But maybe I better take a look at our covenant rules before I decide, huh?

We had chickens when we lived in Alabama, but couldn't find a neighborhood here in North Carolina that would allow them. In all the covenant rules they are usually classified under "offensive animals".
You would think with the state of the economy people would change the rules to allow them. I miss having chickens.

I'm right there with you Susan. I would love to have chickens. Our neighborhood rules won't allow it though. We can have a horse but no chickens. Go figure! My Daddy always raised chickens until he figured out it was costing him a fortune to keep the neighbor's dogs fed. And there's nothing quite as exhilirating as fresh chicken poop squishing up between your barefoot toes in the summertime. That's a feeling everybody should have!!! One day my Daddy reached in a barrell to collect the eggs and came out with a copperhead snake. Yikes!! Used a flashlight from then on. Thanks for the memories!

We always had chickens when I was growing up. Whether we lived in town or in the country. I raised 4-H Club chickens for three years, won 2nd place once and 1st twice. We would get 100 chicks to raise in the spring the take our best to the county fair to show and be judged in the fall. They would be auctioned off to the highest bidder and that money would pay for our chicks..(I think it was 10 or 12 pullets we auctioned off) Twice the buyers followed me home and bought as many as I would sell them and that was my profit....Plus the Eggs......Those are fond memories of my youth and I get to relive them by keeping a few hens these days....

LOL! I grew up in rural Missouri and we had a chicken coop and a mean ole rooster, too. There was a 2x4 outside the front door with that rooster's name all over it! Someone in the family knocked him out cold once on the walk to the bus stop. After he flogged my youngest sister, Dad finally dealt with the mean ole rooster with his pistol. Me and my sisters stood in the doorway and cheered.

REMINDER TO MYSELF: From now on, never read Susan's posts while you are taking sips of Earl Grey. Sprayed tea does nothing positive for a monitor! LOL! Poultry-geist! BWAHAHAHAHAHA...GASP! You HAVE to hurry and write your book. You really DO! The neighbors may not appreciate chickens, but they would LOVE anything you write! I KNOW I WOULD! My grandmother also raised chickens &, much as she loved her darlings, she could wring the daylights out of a chicken neck when guests showed up for Sunday breakfast. Yes! Fried chicken and gravy, biscuits and eggs for BREAKFAST. And she had a Rhode Island Red who was a real terror! Sounded a lot like your naughty chicky! LOVED this post!

Susan ~ I love the idea of going out and getting your own fresh eggs, but I'm just not sure I could stomach chickens and their mess and meanness. Our covenants in our area say "no" to poultry ... so I'm saved from having to think about it. :)

That happened with our banty rooster too! He started out as a sweetie that I could carry around, but turned into an attack chicken that I was afraid of. My husband used to tease me and say I was the chicken, not the bird!

My mom had chickens too--for pets. She had those kind with the
big fluffy feet. This was 15 years or so ago one county away.
Daddy made a shed into their home and every night they would
''walk the plank'' into their little house for the night. Mother would sometimes put plastic eggs under the the hens--can't remember
what was the reason for that. Her favorite was the rooster named
Rambo. He would fly at anyone who got too close to her in the
backyard. Don't miss Rambo but I still miss Mother.

I am just laughing here. Windemere Farm has had poultry for as long as I can remember. We sell the lovely brown eggs and have had such varieties of chickens too! My best memory is of a Rhode Island Red rooster we named Freddy Kruger. He was pure evil...and would flog the heck out of you when you entered the hen house. (no wall paper in ours, just occasional cob webs!). Anyhow, Freddie once flogged me to the ground and left my neck and throat bruised from his spurs. Not long after either my son, John, or his dad...took a two by four to Freddy and that was his last flog. I love the banties but my favorites are the Buffs who are fat, gentle girls and have no malice at all! Cleaning the hen house is one nasty job...but the fresh clean straw makes us smile! Have fun dreaming of your chickens!

Thrift-o-Mania

Tuestabchair

I had a lot of luck last week with thrift finds. At one local yard sale I found this absolutely wonderful Coca-Cola patio set. I decided it was perfect for my front porch. I'll gussy it up some more, but I want to show it now while my excitement is high. It's brand new, still bearing the tag from the manufacturer, and I got it for half of the original cost. (I looked it up online.) Don't you just love it when you score a bargain on something you really love?

Tuesforks Tues1

Earlier in the week I found this wonderful blue-and-white sheet (below) that will be perfect for my guest room bed. I'll probably use a plain white fitted sheet for the bottom. Price for the perfect condition sheet: $2.00.

I have another thrift find to show you that i'm excited about, but it's in the basement right now and I haven't photographed it yet. So I'll save it for another day real soon. Today I have to get up and get busy. I have a lot of little detail stuff to take care ot today. You know, the necessary errands like paying bills and calling insurance companies and such like. Bore, bore, bore.

Oh yeah, almost forgot: Sophie says thanks for your compliments on her art work. She's upstairs now, measuring off an area in the sewing room to set up an easel. Actually she's on the couch licking her derriere. It seems l'artistes have strange rituals.

L'artiste Chien Sophie

Sophie Painting 2

I'm going to have to buy her a beret; and she's demanding that I give over half my sewing room for her studio now. As if she weren't diva enough, now she thinks she's an artist.

And I suppose she is. My sweet and talented Sophie painted a beautiful picture for me, with the help of a couple of nice ladies at the Barks for Life Saturday. It's called Paws 'n' Paint or Paint 'n' Paws or Painting Paws or something. I forget what. But Sophie did a wonderful job. The beautiful pinks and greens of her masterpiece are perfect for our office. I just have to get a frame for it and hang it.

It's a good "idée" !!!!

Oh, what could be better than this lovely floral painting that Sophie and friends made for you?!! Once this unique painting is matted and framed, I hope you'll attach a photo of Sophie and a copy of the above picture to the back of the picture. That will be a forever record of the artist and the creation of the flowers. Sweet, sweet, sweet!

I wonder if Barks for Life could have an ongoing fundraiser by turning this type artwork into prints and note cards they could sell??

Still cleaning house for company that arrives tomorrow so I need to get back to it. I enjoyed my break with you!!

Hugs!

This is trés magnifique! We tried to get Buckles the cat to paint, and he just looked at me like I had told a really un-funny joke! Then he stuck his tongue out at me!

OH!!!! This has to be my VERY FAVORITE of all your posts to date! I KNEW Miss Sophie was special! Sure enough, her's an artist! LOL! Seriously great idea they had to turn the paw prints into an honest-to-goodness frame-worthy piece of art! I love it, & it will be perfect for your office! I was already having a WONDERFUL day - this post made it even happier! LOVE YOU!

What a wonderful artist Sophie is. This will be one of the best things in your space.
The colors are perfect.

On 04/19/2010, WendyC said ...

That is very special. How clever is Sophie? She definately deserves a beret, although I expect she would prefer a beret shaped special biscuit. What a star, what a clever girl to chose just the right colours for your new office.

I absolutely agree with Barbara Anne. What a wonderful way for "Barks for Life" to obtain additional funds. In this way they could reach so many people throughout the U.S. and not be limited to just one area.

I know I'd buy a print, note or postcard by the talented Sophie and her fellow artists.

A Walk for PopPop

Bark9 Sophie and I took part today in the First Annual Barks for Life at Moody City Park. There were dozens of doggies and lots of fun. Sophie did some doggie art (which I'll show in another post), met lots of four-legged friends, explored the entire park, and had loads of fun. After our one-mile walk in memory of our Vann, we had some good pit barbecue with Andy, who had snown up by then.

Then we went home; both of us were too tired to stay for the games: a "musical sit" contest (the last dog to sit is out), a high-jump, and more. Although Sophie is a great sitter and would have had a good chance of winning that contest, we decided a nap on the couch would be more fun.

Here are some photos of our day. The first one, at top, shows Andy and Sophie both showing off their brand new haircuts. Tomorrow i'll post the series showing Sophie doing her art work.

Great pictures of a sunny Southern day and a gathering for a worthy cause. Wonderfully cute or handsome dogs (as the case may be) and Andy looks charming as usual. Vann is sure to have been pleased with the walk you and Sophie made as well as with your wise decision to nap!

I'm looking forward to photos of Sophie's artwork!

Hugs!

Both Andy AND Sophie look GORGEOUS! I'm so glad you had a nice day for the event, and I believe Vann was smiling at his girls! NOTE: The doggies are all so cute, but I'm afraid I'm biased in favor of Miss Sophie! She's the CUTEST!
