Under the Dome

A3

The mysterious invisible dome that has descended upon the little Maine town of Chester's Mill seriously inhibits communication with the outside world. And that's where I've been all weekend, my nose planted firmly within the pages of this four-pound tome. That's why I haven't been blogging or facebooking or much of anything except reading. It's a page turner, the best book Stephen King has written in a while, in my opinion.

I did take time out yesterday afternoon to work on the last two bunny blocks. I finished Brown Bunny, block #9, and have block #10 (the last block) cut out and ready to baste. Then I went back to reading.

I'm not the speediest of readers, especially since my eyes have aged and my eye doctor can't get my glasses right. I'm about 700 pages into the book and hope to get back to it today after I do a little declutter work upstairs. And maybe this evening, I'll get that last bunny block done or work on my snowball blocks. Still have a few hsts to trim.

Neighbors were busy this weekend putting up signs of the season. Not me. I'll hang my front door wreath tomorrow, Dec. 1, and then who knows when I'll get my little tree up or embellish the dining table? Before Dec. 25, for sure. On our last walk last night, Sophie and I took a couple of photos of neighborhood bling.

A2
This is Paul and Karen's front yard. The reindeer's heads move back and forth, and the small gift box opens and closes.

A1
I thought Nolan's little trees were the cutest things. But Sophie was more interested in the big bug creeping down the curb.

We have a very rainy, dreary morning today--the type of weather when I work all day trying to get Sophie to outside for bathroom duty. This morning, I figured out a secret. Sophie hates water falling on her back. I know that from her baths. So I decided to dress her in her red sweater a while ago, and she went outside just like it was a sunny day. She used to have a little rain coat, but she seems to have lost it somewhere.

I just heard on CNN that 195 million people turned out for Black Friday shopping. I was not one of them. I'm happy for the economy, but for the life of me I don't understand why anyone would want to get up at 4:00 a.m. to go and battle Mall crowds for prices that you can probably find from now until Christmas, maybe even lower. It's like hunting to me. I've always wondered at Vann and his friends' fondness for getting out of a warm bed in the wee hours to go sit up in a tree in the cold and damp and hope a deer wanders by. To each his own, I guess. Happy Monday, everyone.

Welcome back from your outing to Maine! I understand getting lost in a book. When the boys were grounded, I used to tell them they could read and be anywhere in the world or space, but they wouldn't be in front of our TV!

Hope you have good lighting where you read. Our aging eyes require more wattage (like double) according to Dr. Susan Mech who wrote "Rx for Quilters". That sometimes means buying a new lamp that can accommodate stronger light bulbs.

Congrats on the nearing completion of your bunny blocks! They each have such different personalities already. Good stitching!

Will Sophie get a new rain coat for Christmas?!

Hugs!

I pulled out a rain coat this morning and had to call my dogs three times out of the front step for bathroom duty. Boy do those pups hate the rain! Love the pictures of the decorations :) Hope you get the tree up sooner than later, I always find that Christmas decorations cheer me up.

No Black Friday for me either! I've only read one SK book - The Eye of the Dragon - maybe I'll give this huge one a try for the new year!

I so agree with Barbara! I find myself squinting and squirming to position myself just so if the lighting isn't right these days. I have only the one sighted eye, of course, and stinky vision in the left one now, but I thought it was just ME fighting for light! Your bunnies are each just as cute as they can be! I am really eager to see the completed quilt! As for the Black Friday thing - UGH! No way would I battle the crowds! Insanity at its highest that shopping day tradition! The lights are gorgeous! Wish I had the stamina to do the outside! But my favorite photo is lil' Sophie admiring her bug! I just adore that doggy! Oh! I am well into Charles de Lint's latest novel. Like you with the King book - I don't want to put it down! Will email back later! LOVE YOU!

I'm so glad your enjoying 'Under The Dome', I got both the book and the audio as my eyes are affected by my scleroderma and some days I can read, others I can't. Also, I can listen to it on my Ipod while I sew, the best of both worlds. Though I am much slower than you, I too am truly enjoying it. For me, if a book is really a page turner, the longer, the better...I want to see what happens but I hate to see it end. As for Black Friday, I just don't do shopping anymore unless I have to and especially not that day, nor the day after Christmas. Your bunnies are all so darling, I just love them. Can't wait to see the finished project. Hugs coming your way.

On 11/30/2009, Nicole said ...

I am about as far as you are into Under the Dome. I haven't read such a page turner in a long time. I do find myself wishing SK wasn't quite so graphic though! His depictions of the character's personalities is the best however.
Shopping at the mall? So over rated!

Well, first, thank you for the Thanksgiving Greeting! I hope you had a nice one, too, although I know it must have been hard for you.
I'll probably read "Under the Dome" one day. I heard that Stephen King wrote it many years ago, so I bet it reflects his older works. I have enjoyed so many of his books, (recently: Duma Key) but nothing will ever top "The Stand," "The Shining" and "IT," IMHO.
And I totally agree with you about Black Friday. It's so silly. Frankly, I didn't see anything that was such a great buy I'd stand on line for it!
BTW, I recently finished "The Tale of Edgar Sawtelle." Thanks for recommending it in your booklist. I loved it.

Thanks for stopping over.....

A Turkey-less Thanksgiving

Flowers

Vann usually gave me flowers on our anniversary, so my daughter Andy continued the tradition for him--red roses and those pink flowers that I love and can never remember what they're called.

Andy and I had planned to go out for Thanksgiving lunch, then see a movie. Who knew all the movies we wanted to see would be sold out and that the only restaurant in the whole city of Birmingham that we could find open would be Cracker Barrel? Now, we like Cracker Barrel and would have been happy to take out Thanksgiving Day repast there. But when we saw the crowd, we almost lost our appetites. There was a line to get in line to get a number to get a table. We would have still been waiting.

But thank God for Wal-Mart, we did not go hungry nor unentertained. While I gathered supplies for lunch (rotisserie chicken, pasta salad, stove top stuffing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin cake) Andy perused the movie offerings in the Red Box and found a couple that looked interesting.

Back home, we chowed down and watched "Angels and Demons" and "Last Chance Harvey," two excellent movies. It was a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sophie snuggled up beside me on the sofa during the movies, and we all knew Vann was right there with us adding to the warmth and love. While I know the grandmothers would cringe at the thought of their offspring eating Stove Top Stuffing on Thanksgiving Day, we rather enjoyed it. Pile enough cranberry sauce on it, and you almost think it's Granny Wright's dressing. (Not really, Irene; I jest.)

I did not get up at 4:00 a.m. this morning to fight the crowds at the malls for a 20% discount, and I never will. In fact, I've taken the "Buy Nothing" pledge today. I'm staying out of stores.

Cake This morning got off to an excellent start when my neighbor Mary Jane and her doggie Millie stopped by with a piece of her delicious apple sauce cake. Along with a cup of coffee, it made an outstanding breakfast.

Today I'm going for a haircut (much needed), then this afternoon Andy, Sophie, and I are going to watch The Iron Bowl. That's the annual football game rivalry between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers. Being dyed-in-the-wool Bama fans, we're pulling for the Tide. But no matter how the season has gone so far, this game is never a done deal. It should be very interesting. Of course, Bama is #2 (I think) and going to the SEC championship game with Florida; but that all just means that Auburn will fight that much harder to clean their plow.

I hope all of you are full and happy from you Turkey Day doings. Thank you all for your comments, thoughts, and prayers for me. I am blessed in many ways, among them the fact that I have all of you for friends.

Glad you managed to save the day with Walmart!!LOL Did you see the Texas/A&M game? Wowza!! I'm now a Longhorn fan, except when they play OU.

I'm doing the Buy Nothing thing too except Mark needs undershirts so we'll be going out to get those. And, his employer put him on their Sam's Club acct so we'll go there to get cat litter, lol. That's just our regular shopping though. I imagine we'll watch plenty of football once we're back home.

I have never went shopping on this day and vow never to either. My baby sister thinks she has to go every year and so does my youngest daughter. I hate those crowds..all the shoving and pushing...grrr

This year finds my baby sister out of the stores for once...When you are watching the game today look in the 3rd row up from the field on Auburns side at the 50 yard line...My 2 sisters, brother in law and nephew will be there watching the game in person for the first time ever! I think they will be the ones with blue and orange hair. hehehe My baby sister had that in store for my oldest sister...I wonder if she got her to do it..Oh well, we shall see in a few hours. LOL

Staying home from the stores, here, too. About a decade ago, I actually got up to be at the store at 6am on Black Friday to buy a necklace for my mother. I was home by 6:40 am and back in bed soon thereafter. Imagine my chagrin when that same necklace was at the same sale price all day every day for the next three weeks!! Never again!!

The flowers are lovely and bless Andy's heart for remembering and continuing the tradition. Sweet!

I love your cheery polka-dot dishes!

The astrameria are really lovely and keep for a fairly long time. They also have a very nice fragrance. It sounds like a pleasant day for you-

We have a shopping day the day after Christmas called Boxing Day ( It also happens to our Wedding Anniversary - December 26th and will be our 29th anniversary this year) Anyway there are major sales that people line up for to get the best bargains of the year. I am not a crowd person so I have never lined for them but some of my siblings enjoy getting a bargain or two on that day.
Hope you are having a nice day with friends.
Warmest regards,
Anna

I Married a Hoarder

Hoarding-syndrome-clutter-01-af

That picture could be me upstairs in the storage room trying to clear away clutter.

This week, I have been packing up stuff, mostly Vann's clothes. With winter coming on and so many people without jobs, I started thinking about all the good those clothes could do. So I called a local charity and was told that they would be very happy to distribute Vann's clothes to the needy.

Over 100 shirts, I kid you not, I have packed. And there are still more shirts hanging in upstairs closets. A like number pairs of pants, shoes out the wazoo, and boxes and boxes of baseball caps. I'd say at least 65 thousand caps. Maybe 65 million.

And the basement is another story. Even after Vann and his friend Bill worked for days cleaning it out after Vann got sick, and Bo took things to sell, and I don't even know what all the kids took, it's still a mess of clutter.

And the storage room upstairs: dozens of old cameras, National Geos going back for years and years, photos, slides, books, boxes and boxes and who knows what.

But, thank the good Lord, Vann's clutter is not like what I saw on that show last night, "Hoarders," that comes on the A&E channel. At least Vann was a neat hoarder. I'm not afraid of coming across anything nasty or alive while I'm cleaning out his stuff.

But that show answered some questions for me. I was becoming doubtful about getting rid of Vann's clutter. I was feeling like maybe I should hold on to all of it out of love for him, but after watching that show, I've decided I want everything out of my house that doesn't serve a purpose. If I don't use it, like to look at it, eat it, listen to it, read it, sew it, or need to keep it because of someone else, it's going. My stuff and Vann's. I don't ever want to become a pathological hoarder.

That was a very scary show, to see the kind of messes that people live in because they've let their hoarding tendency get the better of them. Some of them had anxiety attacks and cried when the Hoarders crew came to clean out the messes. Some even refused to give up their messes. Out of the four cases I saw, only one fellow cooperated and was very grateful to the people who helped him put his life in order. The others were willing to give up family, friends, or whatever in order to hang on to their crap.

And I could become a hoarder. I love to collect stuff. Especially fabric, but other things too.  I have a few collections, mostly packed away in boxes. I usually don't make New Years' Resolutions, but my 2010 resolution is that by the end of the year my house is going to be clutter free and organized. I'm sure it will take me that long to get the job done. In days of yore, I could have done it all in a week or so. But those days are long gone. These days I need frequent and long rest periods between work periods.

Last night, while watching that "Hoarders" show, I finished Red Bow Bunny (photo below). He's bunny #10. Only two more bunnies to go. I also trimmed  a jillion or so 2 1/2" hsts (half square triangle squares) for my snowball challenge quilt. I have about a half a jillion to go. I will never again make another quilt that requires that many triangle squares. At least I hope i don't

Red Bow Bunny

Happy Thanksgiving Eve everyone. As I think I said before, tomorrow is also Vann and my 15th wedding anniversary. We were married November 26, 1994. I am not doing the traditional Thanksgiving this year, for the first time ever. Instead, my daughter and I are going out to eat and then we're going to see a movie--"The Blind Side," I think.

NOTE: I amost forgot to tell the worst thing of all about that show. At every, I mean every, commercial break, the first ad that came on showed this young couple, looking at their new house sitting between a couple of other houses. Their house had a reasonable number of Christmas lights on it. The other houses looked like the Griswolds lived in them. The young couple looks at each other and one says, "We need more stuff," and the other says "Yeah, lots more stuff." And then the commercial goes on to tout the low prices of all kinds of stuff. Is this not crazy? Do we not live in a crazy world? I ask you.

Hi Susan, I'm totally in agreement with you we (or at least most of us) have way more "stuff" than we need. I learned the hard way - when my sister in law died I was the one who had to dispose of her assets - she lived in a one room apartment in a luxury retirement home but, boy was she a hoarder, just when I thought I had finished I found some more stuff hidden away. I vowed that I would not give that chore to my loved ones and so I've been cleaning out our home for the past year (a bit at a time) and still have a ways to go. I feel lighter with every load I give away knowing that someone else can put it to better use. Enjoy your Thanksgiving meal out and the movie and raise a glass of wine to the memories of these good 15 (almost) years you had with Vann.

First of all - wow, that is a truly scary show! I think because of the reality of it, so very sad. The way we tend to live for 'more, more, more!' is a true lifestyle of America. You have a GREAT New Year's resolution, one I should claim as my own.

We have eaten out on Thanksgiving before and found it to be refreshing and relaxing. The movie looks to be a good choice, wish I were going, too.

Happy Thanksgiving! :-} pokey

I watched that show once and was shocked at the exploitation of these truly sick people who hoard. It is a mental illness and shouldn't be a form of entertainment. And that ad that you describe? I just don't know what to say! What were people thinking?
Getting rid of stuff is so cathartic for me. I love clearing the clutter and support you in your resolution for 2010!

I totally wanted to watch that show but forgot -- darn! I'll have to catch it again. Hoarding of Vann's type, not the disorder type, is a family trait and I really struggle against that, loving antiques and memories and collecting as I do. I'm glad you're putting his clothing to good use, he would be very happy about that. I hope you have a peaceful holiday!

On 11/25/2009, Barbara Anne said ...

I won't watch that show as I think it's kind of an obsessive/compulsive thing that isn't entertainment (but then I don't like Survivor and similar shows either).

Since inheriting things from my parents and from my aunt, I have too much and am working my way thru it slowly. I recommend the book "The Lilypad List, Seven Steps to the Simple Life" by Marian Van Eyk McCain and her wonderful book "Elderwoman".

As for Vann's things, I suggest you keep his photos and slides. They could become a book or prints that can be sold for income, or seasonal prints for your home and other family and friends' homes. They show the world thru his eyes and I'd consider that very special.

Love those bunnies!

Hugs!

Have been thinking of you today and will send a prayer & hug tomorrow too.

Maybe you can find someone who can do something special with the cameras? Maybe a nice curio cabinet with some of the more interesting ones and a few of Vann's pictures in there too?

I have recently purchased old NG mags for as much as $5.95/each at the antique store so maybe you have a gold mine there and don't know it! I would investigate selling the older issues for sure. Lots of crafters love those old memorabilia pieces for their artwork (but you know that!).

Another beautiful Bunny, Susan;its going to be a lovely quilt.
You certainly have alot of sorting to do, you're right to take your time, otherwise it would be too overwhelming.
I'll be thinking of you tomorrow, very wise to do something different.

Good for you! This is one big reason I went for a year without buying fabric - I have plenty and then some! During the last two years, we've been cleaning out closets, under beds, the garage, the attic, trying to get rid of some stuff. I'm looking forward to our kids having their own places so I can pawn more stuff off on them. I think it's a blessing to pair down and live more simply.

Have fun tomorrow - great idea. Last Christmas we (for the first time ever) didn't spend Christmas with all the grandparents. The four of us slept late, opened gifts, had a simple meal, and went to a movie. It was so relaxing! And no stress! You can still remember your anniversary - it will always be a special date.

Thinking of you!!
Have a blessed Thanksgiving...

Photos, old cameras..slides,film..I think that is a special memory to keep and pass on.

My husband's Dad passed away the same week as Vann..and we threw away 10 dumpsters full of junk.. just last month..but we did find many treasures and special memories we are keeping.

Take your time it is really a lot of work!

Hugs and prayers coming your way!

Hi Susan,
I have spent some time on each of the last 5 weekends de junking our basement. It feels like the process is interminable but we are making progress. The worse thing is the old papers that need shredding- it is time consuming to go through it because you find old pictures, letters and other treasures that one keeps along with the papers like the heating bills from long ago.
It sounds like you have a wonderful plan to make tomorrow a nice day for yourself and your daughter. Enjoy the movie - I am sure you will have mixed emotions but Vann would have really appreciated that you found ways to make his clothing and stuff useful to others.
Sending you warm hugs ( thanks for the birthday wishes the other day too)
Warmest regards,
Anna

I'm sending you lots of good thoughts for Thanksgiving Day/your Anniversary. When we moved from our other house 5 years ago, I swore that we would never keep anything that didn't have a purpose, and that if I didn't use it in a year it was gone. This past weekend we cleaned out clothes that we haven't worn in forever since we retired...lots of people in town will have clothes to wear. LOL!
Have a good day with your daughter! Happy Thanksgiving!

Pie Recipe

Pie

I haven't written two posts in one day in a long time, but here goes. My friend Sherry called me a while ago with a request for the sweet potato-pineapple pie recipe. Her call reminded me that I intended to post the recipe on my blog because several of you had asked for it. So here 'tis.

Sweet Potato-Pineapple Pie
Servings: Servings: 8

Ingredients:
2 cans (15 ounces) yams in light syrup, drained and mashed
1 (9-inch) uncooked pie shell
3 large eggs
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1/2 cup canned evaporated milk
1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple, well drained
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter or margarine, melted
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
 Whipped Cream or Cool Whip

Preparation:
Mash the yams with a potato masher or an electric mixer.

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Prick the pie shell all over with a fork. Place the pie shell on a baking sheet and bake until the shell is lightly browned, about 20 minutes. Remove the pie shell from the oven.

Whisk the eggs and brown sugar in a medium bowl to dissolve the sugar. Add the mashed yams, evaporated milk, pineapple, butter and cinnamon and whisk well to combine. Pour into pie shell.

Return the pie to the oven and bake 10 minutes. Reduce the heat to 350°F. Bake until a knife inserted in the center exits clean, about 45 minutes. Cool completely. Serve with whipped cream if desired.

More Chicken Soup, Please

Monday 2 I'm still in the grip of la grippe. I didn't make church yesterday. I had to sleep last night propped up in a sitting position so I wouldn't cough. And only then after taking Nyquil AND a Benadryl, neither of which I like to take. I want to say I feel a little better this morning, but I think I'll have to wait till night to see if I really do feel better. For some reason, when I have a cold, it's always worse at night. I guess that's true with everyone.

I did get a tiny bit of creative stuff done yesterday. I pressed the seams of all 400- and-something bias squares for the snowball challenge quilt. I have to trim them all to exactly 2 1/2 inches. I started doing that, but got tired and stopped. I also got Bunny #8 cut out and ready to baste.

Kim, a Facebook friend, has done something I want to share with you. She used the Rouenneries fabrics that I'm using for my challenge quilt to make a snowball quilt--not the challenge design, just a regular snowball. I suggest you go over to Kim's blog and take a look. It's absolutely gorgeous. Sometimes simple is the prettiest of all.

I have to make a sweet potato casserole today. Our WOW (Women of Worship) group is selling holiday casseroles. After that, I'm going to work on the bunny block.

My head is so stuffy it's making my brain sluggish, and I'm not coming up with any scintillating prose this morning, so I'll sign off. Hope everyone is looking forward to the holiday and coming up with lots and lots of things to be thanksful for. My blessings cup runneth over.

Monday 1

Bunny #7 and Sweet Potato Pie

Bunny #7 It was a gorgeous fall day here at the Yellow House. Sophie and I spent a little time outside, went for a walk, visited the neighbors.

I also finished up Bunny Block #7 and baked two sweet potato-pineapple pies. I kept one and gave one to Vann's friend Bo, who was a big help to Vann getting all his bench-rest shooting equipment sold. Vann got too sick to finish up the sales listings, so Bo came by today to get some more of the equipment.

I still have my cold. But I'm continuing with the cold meds and lots and lots of juice, tea, and water. I hope I feel like going to church in the morning. But it's supposed to rain, so we'll see.

Sweet Pot Pie 2

Four Bunnies to Go

BUNNY Until this fall, I had not had a cold or the flu for years and years. I had allergies and sinus infections and bronchitis and nearly pneumonia, but no plain old colds or flu. Now this fall I've already had both. So I'm dosed up with Sudafed and Ibuprofen and drinking plenty of liquids trying to get the cold to go away.

I got the pink bunny block finished yesterday and the seventh bunny block cut out and ready to baste. Getting near the end of bunny blocks. The rest of the quilt will be log cabin blocks.

I also got all of my bias squares sewn for the snowball challenge. But I still have a long way to go on that quilt. I found a backing for it though, in my sewing room closet. A piece of fabric that I bought years ago and forgot about. Its colors are just right. I'll show the fabric later, don't have a photo right now.

369530396_32974f5c9c Harken back to my red shoe post of a few days ago. I now have a copy of the photo of my niece in her prom outfit, complete with her red shoes. As you can see, they show no ill effects of their brief sojourn in the toilet, thanks to whatever Buffy and I did to save them.

I hope everyone is looking forward to a good weekend. I also hope my supply of Kleenex holds out because I don't feel like going out to buy more.

She was a real turkey. Thanks, Aunt Suzie, for rescuing the shoe from the toilet.

Another Kind of "I Spy" Snowball

Thurs 1 I haven't done much sewing the past couple of days, and my hand and arm are feeling much better. Will probably finish up that pink bunny block today--maybe.

Thought I'd show you another kind of snowball quilt that I made several years ago. I started this in an Ami Simms workshop when she visited our guild.

I'll start right out by saying that while this was a fun quilt to make, it wasn't easy--at least not for me. The black squares between the snowballs are dimensional and are done by a process of sewing and folding and turning and twisting--a process that can get a little confusing. A different button is sewn onto each of the black squares. I bought a pack of buttons from Ami for this, but I think I used some of my own as well.

Thurs 2

The pattern came from Ami's book Picture Play Quilts, which contains lots of fun patterns for kid's quilts, most of them not as complicated to make as this one, which is called Hugs & Kisses. Can you see the Xs and Os?

Thurs 3

I made the quilt to raffle to raise funds for a playground project that my church was doing at the time. But by the time I finished the quilt, some people in the church had decided that raffling a quilt was gambling and that we couldn't do it. So they decided to sell the quilt on Ebay. I made a donation to the playground fund, took the quilt back, and here it is. My friend Lena Colley at New Traditions Quilting quilted it.

Thurs 4

My pastor asked me a couple of weeks ago if I would make a quilt to hang in the nursery at church. I wonder if this one would work. I think I'll ask.

Thurs 5

***

One year ago today, Vann and I received the diagnosis of his pancreatic cancer. We came home and immediately asked everyone we knew, including all of you, for prayer. How would we ever have made it through this terrible year without those prayers? Thank you all so much.

And while it has been a terrible year, there was joy as well. Vann and I spent some of our most intimate times together, talking of how much God means to us both, and how death is just a trip home. In the end, Vann had his spiritual bags packed and was ready to make that trip. I hope I can be as ready as he was when my time comes.

that is a really cool quilt.. and obviously a lot of time was invested in it.. if only I had the crafty discipline to do such things.. I just dont.. I have tried and just come to the realization I am not "rules" kinda gal :0) I love looking at your stuff though - very pretty.. I hope you know that reading your and Vann's story has really helped me appreciate my husband even more.. and trying to look over tiny stuff that is really not important in the grand scheme of things.

I love your quilts - ALL of them! Each one is detailed and special, and has a 'happy spirit' worked into it! Has it really been a whole year, Susan? It's been such a journey for you - it was such a journey for BOTH of you - but I believe Vann was well-prepared, and I know you both grew together so very much through the year. I love you & admire you more than I can ever say!

Glad to hear that your wrist and hand are feeling better.

My prayers and thoughts go to you, especially this time of the year. Family and friends will help you get through the holiday season. Your quilts are so creative and I've enjoyed looking at them. Where did you get the patterns for the stained glass quilts you were hung in the sanctiary of the church?

On 11/19/2009, Nancy said ...

Susan, such a sad memory, but your beautiful words "Vann had his spiritual bags packed and was ready to make that trip" truly touched me. Your strength through all of this has been an inspiration to me, truly. I also pray I will be strong enough to accept whatever God allows into my life before I make that trip and that I am as spiritually prepared to 'go home'. God Bless. You are in my prayers.

I love this quilt and it looks like it is a lot of work. Sunday I hope to be putting a video on of a group in my church 20 years ago and when I hear the song I think of Vann. I especially will think of him now as you have shared with us that he was packed and ready to go. I hope that I am that ready. You have honored him so much!

Bunnies On Hold

04850350341_450x450_a My right hand and arm are much better today, but I can tell that there's still some inflammation or irritation or something there. So I think I'll leave off hand sewing, which means the bunny blocks, for another day.

But I might get on with constructing my snowball bias squares, since that's done on the machine. I think I can probably sew them with my brace on since it leaves my fingers free. I can type with it on, so I should be able to sew squares.

Bias squares

I did get some reading done yesterday. I finished two books and started another. The one I started is Stephen King's new novel, The Dome. I was hooked from the first page. So even though it's a big big book, something like 1,100 pages, it should be an easy read.

Andy brought me a book last night, Life Lessons by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler. This morning while I was drinking my coffee, I started it and I'm hooked on it too. So here I go, reading two books at once again.

Andy and Lori have been bringing me boxes so that I can start packing up some of Vann's things, to keep and to give away. So I might try to get at least one box packed today. Maybe it will be easier if I just do a little at a time.

I'm sneezing, my thoat is sore, and my eyes are swollen and watery this morning. I took a whatcha callit pill for allergy but it hasn't helped yet. If the sewing and/or packing doesn't go well, I might just lie back down and read Stephen King's book.

KreativBloggerAward Here's something I've been forgetting for days and days and I want to post it. A good blogging friend and fellow quilter, Donna, honored Blackberry Creek with a Kreative Blogger Award.

Donna lost her sweet daughter Amber recently. I don't know what it's like to lose a child, but I know what an awful companion grief is. I know Donna would be cheered to have you stop by her blog for a visit. It's a wonderful blog, full of beautiful quilts, home decor, and stories of her family, including her dear Amber.

How wise of you to listen to your wrist and hand, put the splint on, and put the bunnies on hold. Let the healing begin, with books, tea, and sneezy meds to help you feel good again. If the splint doesn't help, your doctor may give you an Rx for an anti-inflammatory med.

Love your stack of squares for the Snowball quilt! Hope your hand and watery eyes will let you sew on that project for a while.

I applaud your decision to pack things a bit at a time. Haste leads to later regrets as is the case since AMIL's sisters went thru their mother's things in a day and without even letting AMIL know it was being done. They even donated things and threw things away before they told AMIL. Her feelings are still hurt about that a year later.

Hugs! Hope you feel better!

Hope your whatcha callit pill kicks in so you're well enough for Bible Study tomorrow night. I really missed not going last week but have been lax about my homework! Guess I know what I'll be reading today and tomorrow...and it won't be Stephen King! Tell Sophie and Earl Gray hello for me! Love you

I can relate - broke my right wrist Sunday a.m. & the entire sewing room is on hold - Christmas gifts 1/2 made...but we do what we can, right? For now I enjoy seeing what everyone else is doing...hope you can make some head way on those snowball blocks. Take good care of your arm!

I have greater sympathy for anyone with aches now since I broke my leg back in the summer. Hoping your hand is soon totally useful again. Wonderful quilt colors. I've only read one SK book which was not all ghosty and scary; maybe I'll give him a try again. Take care.

Bless you, bless you! I know how hard it is when the wrist and hand is acting up! I am familiar with Elizabeth Kubler Ross, she is a wonderful author and addresses subjects not attempted by others! When I was going to college nights in the '70's and read, Dying and Death by her. I am so glad I did because I never forgot her words and they have been so helpful in my husband's journey with cancer! Thanks for all the joy you give to others with your words and wonderful creations. Kerrie

Achey Breaky Tuesday

Tuesday Bunny I did a LOT of sewing yesterday. I finished Bunny #5 (photo at left) started bunny #6 (photos below), made test blocks for the snowball challenge (photo below), and worked on the rest of my snowball bias squares (no photo).

I don't think I'll be doing any sewing today though. In fact, I'm having a bit of trouble typing. I have aggravated the carpel tunnel thing in my right hand apparently. It's hurting like heck this morning. I think I'm going to go dig out the brace I haven't used in a long time.

And it's not just the right hand and arm that hurts. It's a chilly damp morning, and all my conditions are acting up. Achey, creaky, stiff, and tired. I think this might be a day for lying around with Mr. Earl Grey and reading.

I'm so sorry you're having the aches and pains--again! I have the carpal tunnel thing, too, and those splints help a lot when it flares up. I hope you've got something effective for pain relief. It's so frustrating, when you want to do or make something, but your parts won't cooperate!

Your snowball block using Rouenneries is breathtaking. Those bunnies are adorable too--I wonder if it is the hand sewing that is hurting your hand? I get that pain in the thumb when I cut all day long or if I am on a binding sewing marathon.
By the way, have you started the new Stephen King book? It is a page turner!

I Spy Snowballs

Jesse's Quilt Thanks to everyone who left comments and advice on my "Taking Stock" post. I promise I won't get rid of stuff willy nilly for now. There's a big closet in my office/study room. Right now, that room also is the home of most of my crafting supplies that aren't sewing related. The room is a big old mess is what it is.

Vann has always used the closet for his hunting wardrobe--you know, all that camo stuff. So here's the plan. I'm going to pack up the camo and clean out that closet.(Not giving the camo away either, at least not for now until I see if the boys want any of it.) I'll purchase some inexpensive shelving at WalMart or somewhere and make the closet home for all my crafting supplies. Even if I don't ever use them again, they'll be much easier for someone else to dispose of if I should happen to croak or move to Italy. So that's settled. Not done--just settled.

You might be wondering about the quilt in the photo. That's the snowball quilt I made for my grandson Jesse when he was 10 or 11. He's 20 now and still uses it. Andy brought it yesterday to wash, and I took some photos while it was hanging on the line.

I made it on the "I Spy" quilt principle. Each block is a different fun print. Click on the photo to enlarge and you can see the prints better. Some blocks have photo transfers of Jesse himself. The photos have faded a bit, but the quilt is as bright and fun as always.

Jesse's Quilt 2

Jesse's Quilt 3

Jesse's Quil 3

Speaking of snowball quilts, I hope to make progress on my snowball challenge this week. I got the October Garden units that I was chainpiecing (zillions of them) out from under the sewing machine presser foot this weekend. So now I can start chain pieceing the snowball bias squares.

I also got another bunny almost finished this weekend. Just a little more embroidery on her scarf, then I'll snow her here.

I find I'm liking working on several projects at once. It keeps things more interesting and staves off boredom.

Funny to see that watermelon fabric. This weekend I pulled out the box marked Food Fabrics that I have been collecting for my son's food quilt and there was that same fabric (and too much of it too). Some fabric just never goes away!

Thanks for showing the Snowball Quilt, its inspired me. I have quilts done for my 3 Granddaughters but couldn't decide what to do for the 2 Grandsons, now I know. I have lots of fun prints so these could be stash reduction quilts, though I'm sure I might find a few "new" prints. I have the watermelon fabric too ,bought for a Summer table cloth many years ago, never got made!
Pleased to hear that your craft storage problem has worked itself out, there"s always a way.
Have a great Monday.

Applause for your decision for the large closet's future as your other-crafts supply center. That's a dream come true.

When I came home yesterday with the quilt I took it into Jesse's room. I went to lay it on his bed, but before it had a chance to hit the bed he grabbed it. It was so funny. He does love that quilt. You are going to have to make him a newer, bigger one so that I can put that one up for his child. His big 'ole feet stick out when he is sleeping.

Uh Oh!

Blogg1 Guess what today is? Yep, Friday the 13th, the third one of these supposedly unlucky days we've had this year. We won't have another year with three Friday 13ths until 2015. Did you know that? I didn't either until I googled.

If you research Friday 13 a little, you'll find that all kinds of bad things have happened on this date. I haven't tested this theory, but I'll bet that you could google Tuesday the 11th or any other day and find all kinds of bad things happening. And good things too.

Fortunately I'm not superstitious. The sun's shining, it's a lovely day, and I have book club this afternoon. I sure don't want to cower in the house, afraid of falling in a sinkhole or having the sky fall one me.

Oh, and see that notation under 13 in the photo above? That means Sophie has an appointment for a grooming this afternoon. But don't tell her. She'll be the one cowering in the house. She hates it when Diane comes. I don't blame her. I don't like to go for haircuts either, which I have to do very soon.

I got quite a bit done yesterday. I worked on the "October Garden" pieces and got a lot of sewing done with that. Then I prepared another bunny block for stitching and finished that annoying two-bunny block that was giving me such problems.

In addition to the sewing room work, I got a pot of Brunswick Stew made. No, I can't eat all that. I'll take most of it to my neighbors whose son Mike just had the spinal biopsy. He'll be coming home (to their house) tomorrow and I thought a nice hot bowl of stew would be a good way to welcome him.

Blogg 2
That crease across Mr. Blue Bunny will be pressed out before this block goes into a quilt.

Blogg 3
 Another bunny ready for basting.

Blogg 4
Brunswick Stew ready for tasting.
(I made a poem.)

Making soup is a lovely and yummy way to pass an autumn day and it will be the best glad-you're-home welcome for Mike.

Has the postman brought you a little something from me this week? It was mailed Saturday.

The rain has finally diminished here but the wind continues to blow. We've had more than 6" of rain this month. Glub, glub!

What book is being discussed in book club?

Wishing you and Sophie bravery in the face of your coming hair cuts!

Yes, I'll admit it! I'm a weirdo! I turned 13 on Friday the 13th (of September - a million YEARS ago) and lived to tell the tale. So I have always LIKED the ominous date. Am I superstitious? About things that are TOTALLY stupid. For instance, I cannot STAND to see shoes paired backwards. You know, they HAVE to be stored the way a person WEARS them! LOL! And the #22 - EEEEEKS! Long story - won't go there. Anyway, you AND Sophie are going to look even MORE gorgeous with new haircuts! And - please ma'am - what is in Brunswick stew? It looks REALLY yummy! I know Mike will appreciate you tremendously! OH! And your bunnies are soooo cute!
