Happy Birthday, Leapies Everywhere!

Leap_02This guy, Dennis Farina who plays handsome, sexy Joe Fontana on "Law & Order," is 16 today. Looks a little older, doesn't he?

Farina was born Feb. 29, 1944, which means this is officially his 16th birthday, although he has been alive for 64 years.

I have personally known only two Leapies: my best friend Joyce Ann's little brother Freddie, and my daughter Andy's friend Rhonda. It has been my personal experience, though limited, that Leapies are prone to trouble in one form or another. When we were teenagers, Freddie was constantly dealing Joyce and me some kind of misery. And when Andy was a teenager, I spent many anxiety-filled nights, knowing that she was out with Rhonda.

Maybe Leapies' trouble proneness is a result of a grudge they carry against fate for handing them a birthday that comes around only every four years. The rest of the time, they either have to forgo birthdays altogether or share somebody else's, somebody born on March 1 or February 28.

Birthdays are touchy subjects to people. I know I got all bent out of shape last year when my own personal birth anniversary fell on Leap Forward Day, which isn't quite as bad a having your birthday on plain old Leap Day. On Leap Forward Day, I lost an hour of my birthday due to the incoming Daylight Savings Time phenomenon. Leapies lose three whole years!

Hey! I have never thought of it until today, but I barely missed being a Leapy myself, pregnantly speaking.  I was born on March 11 in a leap year, only 11 days after that awful day when nobody wants to be born. And anybody who has had babies knows that a birth can, and often does, occur earlier than one's stated due date.

So any of you full-term mamas who are thinking of giving birth today, think again--think about what being born on Leap Day could do to your child. Why, if she lives to be 100, she will have only 25 birthdays! Only 25 cakes covered with butter cream frosting and decorated with icing roses. Only 25 times to receive birthday cards and bright colored packages with surprises inside. Only 25 times to have "Happy Birthday" sung to her at Outback or Longhorn. Why, she'd have to live to be 400 to ever stand a chance of appearing on one of Willard Scott's jelly glasses. Ask yourself: Do you really want to do that to this kid? Cross your legs, woman! Protect this child from a life of deprivation!

Happy Birthday, Dennis. May you have nine more.

I used to have a roommate who was a leap year baby. Her sister was four years older than her, also born on February 29. Maureen used to say, "I only got a real birthday every four years and I had to share it with my sister!" It was a real issue for her.

You are too funny. I personally don't believe I know any leapies. Fortunately I was born earlier in the month--Valentine's day.

Hi Susan,
My dear friend's Dad passed away on Leap Year. I have always thought he meant it to happen that way, so that his family would not have to experience the pain of that day every year.

Hope you are well.

"Floral Fantasy" It Is!

PillowcasesThis is a brand new pair of pillowcases (you put your head on them) handmade by me. This is the prize for whoever was the winner of my Name-the-Altered Card Giveaway, which I announced last week.

I used the Random Number Generator to choose the winner, and that winner happens to be Phyllis King of Carolina Arts. Her suggestion for a title for the card was "Floral Fantasy," so that's the official name of Altered Playing Card #8/52. Great job, Phyllis. Congratulations.

Thanks to all of you who entered this giveaway by leaving suggestions. They were all excellent titles, so I wasn't a bit worried when I was choosing the winner. It didn't matter who won, I was sure I'd have a good title for my card..

This has been a weird week around here. You already know about our strange weather. (The sun is out today, although it's still cold.) But yesterday, the strangest thing happened (at least for us). After lunch, about 2:00 p.m., Vann retired to his recliner to read and I cleaned up the kitchen and folded a dryer load of clothes. By the time I was halfway through these chores, I felt like I couldn't stay on my feet. I was totally exhausted. I got finished and went immediately to my big chair, picked up my book, and covered up with the fleece blanket. The next thing I knew, I was waking up and so was Vann and it was dark outside. We had slept for about four hours in our chairs. We rarely even take naps; and when we do, they last for about an hour. Even Sophie got in on the snoozing. She slept right along with us on the back of the sofa.

I thought I wouldn't sleep a bit last night, but I went to sleep about 12:00 and slept until 8:00 this morning. I don't know what time Vann and Sophie came to bed. I do know that Vann had got up, walked Sophie, and made coffee before I stirred this morning.

I don't know, maybe we just needed the sleep because of the stress of the stormy night. Or maybe some low-flying tsi-tsi fly put the bite on us all. Whatever, we really stored up some Zs yesterday.

Blue_bonnet See this fabric (left)? I bought this I don't know when at I don't know what quilt shop, and I need some more to go in my Scottish Stars quilt. (I know they're Texas bluebonnets which probably don't grow in Scotland, but the color is right. If you know of some blue-and-yellow thistle fabric, I'll use that instead.) I've searched the web over and can't find any. If anybody has some, I'd be so happy to purchase it from you or swap for something I might have that you need. Just give a shout.

Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas. I would suggest you look up quilt stores for Texas on google. Most of them will have either an email address or an 800 number. That is where I would start. I will see if I can find the "info" on some of them I know and email you.

Susan, I cannot believe I've won your beautiful pillow cases! With piping, even! You are a wonderful seamstress, dearie! Thank you so very much! And I think your extra-long naps were from stress and pain the last few days, not to mention the awful storm! Please rest one day soon.....(after you mail me the gorgeous pillow cases)! heh, heh

On 02/28/2008, Nicole said ...

Pretty pretty pillow "slips" as Grandma Agnes used to call them. We call Bluebonnets "Lupine" here in California. Wonder if they are the same plant?

Congratulations Phyllis!!! Lovely name for the card!

Susan, I figured you might have been without power when you never posted(and that was my reason for not calling, I thought the phone lines might be out too). Glad it came back quickly, if you can call 24 hours quick. I agree with Phyllis about the storm stress causing you to sleep like that. When my parents came for Christmas I did the same thing, it wasn't a bad stress, it just drained me.

I've actually been craving a nap since Monday but haven't gotten it yet. Hopefully tomorrow, now that I'm through with painting the girls' bedroom.

Molly

Floral Fantasy is lovely and the pillowcases are a great definiition of the title. Sometimes I sleep away for hours as well - I think our bodies get to a certain point and just need to sleep. We can't fight it! I don't have any fabric sources but will keep my eye out.

"Unusual Weather We're Havin', Ain't It?"

2293419645_cbc8796562On Tuesday morning, around 4:00, we awoke to the sound of the answering machine clicking on and off and the bedside lamps flashing on and off as the electricity got ready to give up the ghost. Outside, the lightening was flashing with such frequency that we really didn't need electricity for lights; we could see by the lightening. Seconds later, it sounded like a giant hand was throwing rocks up against the house.

Vann got out of bed and got dressed and went to the basement to listen to his battery-operated weather radio, as the electricity was thoroughly out by that time.

I didn't get up. I kept thinking, "It's just a thunderstorm"--although I'd never seen such constant lightening nor heard stronger winds overhead. But my bed was so warm and comfy, and I can't count the number of times I've crawled out of bed in the middle of the night to seek cover from a possible tornado. (Someday I'll tell you about the adventures that my stormaphobic father put us through during my childhood.)

Finally, I sat up in bed, thinking, "Well maybe I should get up--just in case." But before I could get my feet on the floor, the storm had moved on. The wind died down, and the thunder boomed in the distance, not right over the house. So I lay back down and went back to sleep.

It wasn't until later yesterday morning that we learned that our hometown had been hit in the early morning hours by a fast-moving storm which meteorologist say wasn't a tornado, but a microburst, which sounds like a little-bitty thing, which this storm wasn't. Whatever you call it, it made a mess of Leeds, Alabama. We took a ride around town yesterday (the parts we could get too) and saw sights we could hardly believe. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my camera with me, so I've had to resort to lifting a photo from my niece Buffy's blog. She obviously didn't forget her camera. This is not the worst of the damage we saw, but it's bad enough. The high school's new ball field was destroyed. But the saddest news is that one woman lost her life when a tree fell through her home.

Our neighborhood was spared significant damage. Just a few limbs down and a tree or two. Our electricity was our biggest loss. But Vann is nothing if not prepared. He kept us warm and lighted with his generator and a sufficient supply of $3.15 gasoline.

This morning we were awakened at 5:00 by a call from our neighbor across the street telling us the power was back--26 hours after going off. When at last, dawn broke, we could see that we were getting snow. Alabama weather can be pretty exciting.

I pray that everyone who lost homes, roofs, trees, cars, businesses, etc., has good insurance and that everyone's life is back to normal soon. And I pray for the family and friends of the woman who was killed.

Much Accomplished; Nothing Done

A_faliciaAlthough I didn't complete any one project, I did get a lot of work accomplished at this year's Birmingham Quilters Guild retreat at Camp McDowell near Jasper, Alabama. At right is one of the blocks from a wedding quilt I'm making for a young friend name Falicia. I'm using the Turning Twenty design and a variety of blue prints. Ten of the blocks will incorporate photo transfers of Falicia and her fiance Scott. I finished all the blocks except for eight.

I completed all the blocks for the blue-and-yellow Scottish Stars QuiltA_scottish_stars that I started last year.

And I got all the hearts and background squares cut out for a quilt that I'm going to call "Hearts Dot Com." I'm using the polka dot fabrics that I won on Sharon 's Blog a few weeks ago  and a design variously known as "Stack and Slash Hearts" or "Ragged Edge Hearts," "Raw Edge Hearts," etc.A_hearts_dot_com

It turned out that the 15 fat quarters in my prize package was just the right amount to make this 30-block quilt to hang in my foyer next February. I found the background fabric (black on pink and pink on black) when Saturday at retreat. The owners of Nana's Workshop came with a van full of fabric bolts and let us shop to our hearts' content.

A_prayer_bears In addition to these projects, I also stitched and turned 10 Prayer Bears. Now I have only to stuff them and they'll be ready to turn over to our Children's Director for the Prayer Bear Ministry.

Retreat Weekend was just as great as it always is. We had 52 retreaters this year--about 20 more than past retreats. Here are some photos that tell the tale better than I can. (Click on any photo for a larger

Oh, before I go, I want to show you one of my bestest friends in all the world. A sweeter lady you'd never find if you look the world over. My quilting buddy, Jean B. Give 'em your best smile, Jeanie!

I was tickled pink to learn of all my guild sisters who read this blog regularly. Margie complimented me on the Corn Chowder recipe and suggested a topping of grated cheese. Thanks, Margie.

Jane S. was interested in some of the books on my reading list. I found that she and I are both new Greg Iles fans.

Several sisters commented on the tribute to our dear Doris. And still others, including my dear friend Pat H., commented that they enjoy reading my blogging from time to time.

I want all of you to know that I truly appreciate your visits. Please know how welcome you are here.

Finally, Thanks to All who have left suggestions as to what to name last week's altered playing card. As soon as I have time (which isn't now), I'll draw for the winner and tell you what the prize is. Until then, anybody who hasn't left a comment with a suggestion is welcome to do so here .

I'm always in awe of your talent! BTW, why is it called 'Turning Twenty'? The Amazon link didn't have much to say.

Oh! And I have a book recommendation for you. Have you ever read "The Children of Men" by P.D. James. The movie was based on it. Of course, the book is 10x better...but isn't that always the case?

On 02/26/2008, Molly said ...

Ok Susan,

I'm not going to call you this time, but would you let us know that you're ok? I just read that the storms were bad where you are. Prayers are going up for your area!!

Your Turning Twenty is going to be gorgeous!!! I love the colors!! And that star thing is too. Can't wait to see what the hearts do, they're cute.

I'm planning a Turning Twenty Again for my next bed project but right now my mom is doing another TT for my girls. She made one a few years ago for their double bed(they shared one) but now they're in twins in the same room. The first one is out of assorted bright Laurel Burch animal fabrics with accompanying smaller prints. It is just the right size to hang down to the bottom of the box springs so she's just going to make another one out of the same fabrics for the other bed rather than two new twin ones.

That retreat looked like a blast. I wouldn't have gotten anything done because I'd have been fondling the quilts!

Hope you are done with the storms.

Altered Playing Card #8/52 Blog Giveaway

Card_8
We'll celebrate anything here at Blackberry Creek. Today we're celebrating the completion of Card #8, and in recognition of that, I'm sponsoring a giveaway.

I can't come up with a title for this altered card. So here's how you enter the giveaway. Create a title for this card. Give it your best shot. Leave a comment to this post including your suggestion for the card's title.

When I get back from quilting retreat, I'll draw for a winner. That's right: everybody who has left a title suggestion will go in the drawing. Whichever one I draw will be the title of this card--and the person who suggested the title will win a prize. It's a handmade item (maybe two items), and has something to do with your head (but not a hat). That's all I'm going to tell you about it.

So get your thinking caps on and your creative juices flowing and give me some titles for this card.

I'll be back on Sunday evening and I'll draw for the prize sometime on Monday. Y'all have a fun weekend. That's what I plan to do.

P.S. To see the other seven cards in this series and their titles, go here.

Let's Start With This Fungus

SchroomsI'm not sure if you call these mushrooms or just fungus or what. I think the green stuff is lichen. But, anyway, I thought this dead tree with that stuff growing on it looked cool, so I took a photo.

Here I am, one day away from retreat, and I've hardly got anything ready. I haven't even made all my challenge blocks to take for the drawing--just the rabbit so far.

In addition to getting everything ready and packed to take with me, I need to do laundry and ironing. And I haven't done my altered playing card for this week. And I'm late with yet another altered book in the round robin.

I'm only going to take one or two projects (not everything in the sewing room like I usually do) so I think I can get it packed and ready in short order. I don't know about the ironing and laundry and all that other stuff. I think maybe some things will be left undone.

Today was a busy one. First I had a dentist appointment at 9:30 to get my teeth cleaned, then a haircut, then lunch with Vann at DQ, then to Hancock Fabrics to get some more blues to make a memory quilt for a friend of my daughter's whose getting married in June (the friend's getting married, not my daughter), then to BOM! where I bought a copy of Deepak Choprah's new book, The Third Jesus. That's what I'm taking to retreat with me for reading material. Well, and maybe a Greg Iles thriller that I got last week and haven't read yet. When we got home, I cleaned up the kitchen (the sink was full of last night's dinner dishes--I used to never do that), then I crawled into my big chair with my current book Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. I almost finished it before I fell into a deep snooze. I woke up when Sophie and Vann came back from visiting a neighbor. I'm going back in a few minutes to finish the book so I can start on Choprah.

I just won an unbelievable blog giveaway. I still can't believe it. Nicole at Sister's Choice gave away a beautiful quilt that she made in honor of her first anniversary as a blogger. Her doggy Ozzie drew my name. I still can't believe it. Out of 140 names, that sweet beast reached his little snoot into that basket and lapped up my slip of paper. Only trouble was, then he wouldn't give up the slip of paper. Nicole finally got it away from him, shook off the doggy slobber, put the pieces back together, and there was my name. As soon as the quilt gets here, I'll post a picture. In the meantime, you can see a picture of it on Nicole's blog. So go on over and have a look. It's the red one she showed on Feb. 12.

Anyhoo, winning that gorgeous quilt put me in the mood to host another giveaway. I mean I have to do something to pay it forward. So after retreat, watch Blackberry Creek for a fine giveaway. Don't know what it'll be yet, but it'll be fine. I think it will be something I make.

I gotta go now. I have to see how that book turns out. Just a few more pages to go.

A Very Merry UnBirthday

CakeI only realized this morning, looking at this photo, that I probably was supposed to have pressed the letter candles all the way down so that the picks didn't show. Oh well, the cake was good anyway.

Yesterday was not the birthday of my youngest child Angela (Andy to us).  Actually Thursday is her birthday, but as I plan to be gone on Thursday (quilting retreat), we decided to celebrate yesterday.

So I made homemade lasagna and her favorite cake (yellow with chocolate icing). Andy's boyfriend Steve came with her (see photo below) and we had a nice dinner, then watched the end of the Daytona race.Andy_steve It was really fun. It reminded me how much I used to love hosting family dinners and celebrations. I think we don't do that enough anymore. Everyone always thinks I don't feel like doing the work. And I don't. But I still want to.

Afterward the festivities last night, I cleaned up the kitchen and then flopped in my chair. I felt like H-E-Double- Toothpicks by that time. Vann said it was because I had cooked and served and cleaned up. But I fail to see why that little bit of work should make me feel so bad. I think it's probably just another flare, although coming so fast on the heels of the last one doesn't seem right either.

Anyway, I played hooky from quilt guild this morning. Just didn't feel up to the showering, hair washingRabbit_block and drying and styling, and making up of the face and all the stuff involved in getting there. I have so much to do before Thursday, and don't feel like I can get any of it done. But I am determined, absolutely determined, to not miss quilting retreat.

I've got one of my challenge blocks done--Hippity Hop Rabbit (or something like that).  He doesn't look like he's hippity hopping to me. He looks like he's just sitting there, or possibly getting ready to hop.

I think maybe I used fabrics that were too light. I don't know. The other blocks are, I believe, a turtle, a bird, and a fish. I'm going to try to get them done today. And maybe use brighter fabrics.

I just reread this post and it sounds so flat and gloomy. Sorry 'bout that. I think I'll sign off now and go try to find my smile. Y'all have a good day, ya hear.

P.S. Vann read from the newspaper this morning that Yoko Ono is 75 today.

You have my sympathy and understanding. It may the wild fluctuations of the barometric pressure that's behind your fibro flare-ups. Do you think there would be any comprehension if we told those who are suffering from the flu that those symptoms of painful muscles and feeling "done in" are very familiar to us?

I read your post with the full understanding of your frustration of a flare (I think I mentioned before that I have Lupus). I thought I would pass on this wonderful article as it applies to Fibromyalgia as well. Take Care, Gayle

A Productive Day--Treasurewise

Little_women_1Look what a trip to America's Thrift Store garnered me yesterday! This wonderful 1947 Grosset & Dunlap edition of Little Women for 25 cents! As you see, the dust jacket is pretty ragged. But the rest of the book is in great shape. Look at the hard cover.
Little_women_2

Little_women_3

Little_women_4

And the charming illustrations by Louis Jambor--

Initially, upon finding this treasure, I thought what a great pallet it would make for an altered book. But now that I've fallen completely in love with it, I know I won't ever be able to tear, cut, paste, paint, or in any way harm this book.
I remember the first time I read Little Women.  I was in fourth grade. Louisa May Alcott is a big reason that I love books as I do. While the syntax and dialog in LW might seem dated now, it remains one of the most endearing pieces of literature I've ever read. I can still get completely lost in the doings and undoings of the four March girls and their associates. And when I get to the part where poor Beth dies, I still cry.
********************************************************************************************************
Steno_pad I received another pure treasure yesterday. Melinda of Creations by Melinda sent me this steno pad with quilted cover that she made her very own self. Isn't it wonderful. It's going to retreat with me next week, and I'll keep it beside my sewing machine to make notes on measurements and the like. It even has a pretty pen in the front pocket. And when the paper is all used up in the steno pad, why I can just pull it out and insert a new pad

Melinda is a fantastic longarm quilter and quilting teacher near Atlanta.

Thank you, thank you, Melinda. What a good friend and wonderful quilter you are.

That book is so beautiful. They just don't 'do' books like that any more, do they. It's a real treasure.
I found two copies of very old "Bobbsey Twins" books on a trip to Pennsylvania, and I had to snatch them up. I was into the Bobbsies big time when I was a kid--must have read every single book. It was so nice to see that familiar green cover again.
The covered pad is so pretty--I love the way the pen holder is on an angle.

That notebook cover is a spectacular gift. I can't believe you found such a cool copy of Little Women! I absolutely adored that book when I was younger, it's one of those great books that every little girl has read and still somehow can relate to in some small way or another.

Goodbye, Old Friend

Doris_2
I have looked all morning for a photo of Doris. I know I have better ones, but this is the only one I could find. This one is probably the most appropriate anyway. It shows Doris helping a young girl with her quilting at a children's program our quilters guild held a few years ago. Doris was always helping people, young and old.

Doris went home to be with our Lord yesterday morning. We'll miss her so much. She was such a beautiful and gentle person--and an extremely talented quilter.

I know Doris is all right now. She was so positive about the possibility of not getting over her cancer. She was grateful for the wonderful life she had had and was ready to go if God was ready to take her. She even cleaned up her sewing room and got rid of a lot of stuff so that her husband and kids wouldn't have to deal it.

I'm blessed for having known this beautiful Christian woman. Thank you for her friendship, God. I just hope you have a nice sewing room all set up for her in Heaven so that she can continue making her lovely quilts.

Oh Susan,
I am sure the Lord is in need of Doris to help repair the angels wings and even His own flowing robe. Who better to advise Him on the beautiful colors of the sunset, but a quilter who has loved the colors of fabric her entire life? Who better, than Doris, to help swaddle the wee ones who arrive in need of tender care....
Sympathy to all of you have been her friend...and blessings to her family as well.

Broken Dishes

Table_boxWhile we were drinking our coffee and watching "The Today Show" this morning, Sophie ran to the window and commenced to have a loud barking fit. Vann went out to the driveway and there was the DHL lady cringing in her truck, afraid to get out and face our vicious dog (eyes rolling). After some assurance from Vann that Sophie would not eat her, she opened the door of the truck and gave Vann this big box. Guess what was in it.
MY TABLE!!!! My beautiful pie crust table that Penny at Lavender Hill Studio made into a beautiful mosaic work of art for me.Table_1

Is this not the most beautiful thing you've ever seen? It's exactly as I imagined it would be (only better) when I asked Penny to do it for me.Table_pc

Table_before This was an old table that I've had for decades. Actually I got it with S&H Green Stamps, so if you're old enough to remember them, then you know how old the table is.

It wasn't in perfect shape; in fact a piece of it fell off on it's journey up to Penny's studio. But Penny fixed that and you can't even tell where it broke.

Penny, I can't thank you enough for your beautiful work. Your talent is amazing.

Monday Melodie

We've had a quiet weekend here at The Yellow House. Saturday, I finished reading a Greg Iles book, Dead Sleep (see left sidebar) and started reading Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.  Vann and Sophie visited most of the neighbors at least once as they made their rounds on the 4-wheeler. And Gene had lunch with us. We had warmed-up leftovers (collards, cornbread, red beans, and pork roast with gravy). Well the cornbread and red beans weren't leftovers, just the collards and pork roast. And it was all good. Sophie enjoyed having Gene here. Maria was teaching a sewing class up at their house, so I guess he was just trying to stay out of the way.

Lace

Yesterday, we went to church, then had lunch at Ming Hui. I'm having pain issues again (mostly my back, hips, and legs), so I spent most of the afternoon on the couch. I did manage to finish my first 8 1/2" x 11" journal quilt of the year (see photo right). This is the one for which I got the idea from Karina Hittle's note cards that appeared in the Winter 2008 issue of Somerset Studio Gallery. Mine is called "Melodie."

Today, I had planned to work on the blocks for the drawing at our guild's retreat later this month at Camp McDowell. There are three or four different pieced patterns for animals. I think I'll start one of them at least. I took one of Dr. W's muscle relaxers (well, actually they're my muscle relaxers, but Dr. W prescribed them) and I'm feeling better than when I got out of bed this morning, all bent over like I was trying in vain to touch my toes. At least I can straighten up now.

I'm getting excited about retreat. It starts on Feb. 21 (Thursday) and runs through Sunday, Feb. 24. A lot of people already have all their projects packed and everything, but not me. I don't even know what I'm going to take yet. I just hope everything stops hurting before Feb. 21.

Soph_sat

Vann has gone with a friend from church, Tony H., to fly in Tony's plane. It's a beautiful day, and I understand Tony is a good pilot, but I'm still a little nervous. Sophie's just pouting because they didn't take her with them.

Thanks for all the comments over the weekend. I was glad hear how many of you were excited about the Prayer Bears. I'll probably cut out a bunch of them and finish them at retreat.

Hope everyone is having a terrific Monday. There's definitely a feeling of spring in the air here. Could that old groundhog have wrong--again?

Prayer Bears

BearThe children's group at my church is heading up a Prayer Bear Ministry. They have asked members who sew to make these simple bears, which our pastor will take with him when he visits homes or hospitals with children. Isn't this a good idea?

This is the first one I've made, and I couldn't wait till I had a whole pile of them to show this one off. His name is Spot. I'm going to make a bunch more. They're really simple to make. I've decided that I will also make a bear for each Cuddle Quilt and baby quilt I give away too. I think I'll make a tag with a sweet prayer written on it to tie onto each bear I give.

If you're interested in making Prayer Bears for your church or to give to children you know, you can find the very easy pattern here.

Red

Red_2

Kitty's theme in the ClothPaperStudio Altered Book challenge is "RED." I was glad to receive her book during February because, to me, red is the color of Valentine's Day. It reminds me of elementary school and the Valentine Box we always had in our classroom--a big box all decorated in red and white with paper hearts. Each child brought Valentines she had addressed to each class member. Then we'd have a party on Valentines Day, with wonderful cupcakes and pink punch. And some lucky person (usually a "teacher's pet") would give out all the Valentines. Those Valentine parties are some of my best childhood memories.

Above is my spread in Kitty's book. Inside the heart pocket on the right page, I've inserted this little tag book made from red paint chips.Tag_book

Excellence

Excellent2bawardAnita at Take Joy has bestowed the "E for Excellence" award on Blackberry Creek. Thanks, Anita, and right back at you, girl! I love visiting Take Joy and seeing the photos of new baby goats, fine chickens, beautiful grandchildren, and all the great fabric and paper art that Anita creates. If you haven't discovered Anita's blog, I suggest you hop over there right now.

I'm supposed to pass this award on to 10 other bloggers. You're all excellent in my book, but here's my Pick 10.

Molly, aka Dark Oak Woman, is a young wife and mother of three. She might also be considered a zoo keeper as her home is filled with lots of furry friends: dogs, cats, and guinea pigs. Maybe other species too; I'm not sure. This young Christian woman loves to cook, read, collect  stuff, and do needlecrafts.

Georgina is a young Argentinean woman living in Madrid, Spain. The best word I can think of to describe El Blog de Georgina is "Pretty." She does such lovely needlework, including embroidery, cross-stitch, and quilting. Georgina teaches quilting classes and takes care of her three little doggies. She frequently takes her readers on visual tours of European shops. Georgina writes in Spanish, but she has a Babel Fish button, so you can translate if you like.

Nicole at Sister's Choice Quilts can make a quilt faster than I can brush my teeth. And her quilts are beautiful. Go visit her. You'll want to stay a while, enjoying her pretty patchwork and gazing into the big sweet eyes of her doggy Ozzie. Nicole often takes us on visual tours of shops, restaurants, and other sites around her coastal California home.

Creations by Melinda is another feast for the eyes if you're a quilter--or even if you aren't. Melinda is a longarm quilter and quilting teacher near Atlanta. She also works at one of the local quilt shops.  She often treats her readers to photos of her own beautiful quilts as well as those of students and quilting friends.  If you're a quilt lover, I suggest a visit right away.

Penny at Lavender Hill Studios already has so many blog awards, I don't know where she'll put this one. Go visit her, and you'll see why this talented artist has garnered so much recognition. Her mosaic art on all kinds of objects from furniture to lamps to mirrors to birdhouses, will blow you away. I love her work so much that I talked her into mosaicing (is that a word?) an old pie crust table for me, which she has now. I can't wait to see it and show it to you all.

My sister Joanne at Sourwood Mountain (aka Sister) is an artist, poet, quilter, and all-around smart person. She's also a book-lover. She'll show you photos of her creations if you'll stop in for a visit. You might also see photos of her kitties, her family, and old people who have died recently. And every now and then, she'll sneak in a picture of Elvis (Joanne loves Elvis!).

Mountain Musings is a weblog written by Deb and her family who live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. They love cooking, quilting, knitting, reading, and most of all, the Lord. A visit to this blog will nourish your soul (and also your tummy if you try some of their recipes). Right now, I have my eyes on that Sweet Potato Salad recipe that Hannah posted today.

Red Geranium Cottage, owned and operated by Sharon, is a fun place to visit. Sharon is not only a talented quilter, cook, and crafter, she's funny. You'll love reading about the misadventures of her and her hubby, whom she sometimes calls Hunka. I think I saw himself all wrapped up in a gorgeous quilt at RGC this morning. Or was that sweet doggy Madeline. Oh well, go see for yourself.

Judy Scott of Kinross Scotland is a mixed medium and textile artist. She is also the the mother of three and wife of Jim, whom she calls "the best man in the whole wide world." While I beg to differ with Judy on that score (we all know that designation goes to my own Darling), I do think she has one of the best blogs in the whole wide world. You'll find her art enchanting and her use of color soothing. Hop on over and have a look. Did I lie?

Rabbit Hill is the home of a wonderful textile artist named Toni. Toni creates hooked rugs, quilts, knitted sweaters, crocheted hats, and myriad other beautiful items. She's also a talented decorator and loves visiting yard sales and flea markets. Aside from all this, Toni is also one of the sweetest people I know. Stop in and pay her a visit. You won't be sorry.

Now I could go on and on. But then the bed wouldn't get made, the laundry wouldn't get done, Sophie wouldn't get to go outside (since Vann is off doing guy stuff with his friend Bill), and I'd remain in my pajamas for the rest of the day. So I best sign off and go tend to details. Y'all go visit these bloggers now. I mean it. I didn't sit here all morning meticulously creating html code for nothing. You're in for some real treats. When you've finished, just go to the sidebar on the right of my blog. You'll find a list called "Blog Hoppin'." On that list, you'll find many more excellent bloggers to visit. And thanks again, Anita, for the honor.

Soph

Different Paths

Queen_2Here's Card #6/52, "Different Paths."
If I have a favorite card in a standard deck of playing cards, it is the Queen or Hearts. I think it's very interesting that the first two cards that I pulled at random during the month of February were from the Hearts suit. Hmmmm.

Parts of the South had horrible weather last night. My prayers go out for those who were touched by these killer storms. I understand at least 48 people lost their lives and many more were injured.

We were very fortunate here to not be in the path of any tornadoes and everyone is safe. I think most of the damage occurred east and north of us.

Sweet Molly, aka Dark Oak Woman, telephoned me this morning to make sure I was ok. It never ceases to amaze and bless me how kind and caring my blogging friends are. Thank you, Molly, for your concern. I've asked God to send you a special blessing, so watch out.

I usually hate elections and watching election returns on tv. But last night, for some reason, I was glued to CNN (except for the hour that I watched "House"--talk about a man you love to hate!). I feel an energy in this year's elections, both in myself and in the country. I'm excited about the paths that lie ahead for us. This is a great and wonderful country, as we all know. And I have a feeling it's about to get greater.

The weather sounds horrible. Glad that you are okay. So you are showing your cards a bit huh? I was passing this video around to everyone yesterday! Looks like we have the same choice.

I was so happy to see that you posted today. I was a bit worried because of the weather, and how wonderful was to read that you are fine. Altering your cards is fun, isnt't it?

This is my favorite card yet!! You are doing amazing work with them! Sorry I didn't chat with you longer, we were headed out the door to collect the raw milk order for our co-op. Its about a 45-mile drive one way and I was already over an hour behind. Glad you weren't freaked out by my calling and super glad you are safe.

I like this card, you have done a great job on it. Curious, why did you name this one Different Paths? Is there a story there?

Happy Super Fat Stormy Tuesday!

Ivoted DID YOU? If not, what are you waiting for?

It's hard for me to not tell you who I voted for and to admonish you to vote for the same person. But I won't.  I will say that I prayed about it first. That's how important I think this election is. So go! Go vote your heart. Do it now. Your country needs you.

Now, that's my sermon for today. Let's get on with more fun stuff. Yesterday was the monthly meeting of The Piecemakers Quilting Bee. We met at Martha's house, which is just down the road a few miles from where I live. Mary came by and rode with me. We had a full house, with only Sally and Rita not showing up. And everyone, it seemed, had some wonderful Show-n-Tell. Let me share some of it with you.

Mary_3 Here's Barbara and Mary showing off Mary's Stack-n-Whack. Isn't it gorgeous. I just love the mum fabric she chose to make her blocks.

Here's a closeup. (Click to enlarge.)

Here's Donna showing off a couple of her Slash-a-Stash baby quilts that she made from directions she received at a workshop taught my ME a couple of years ago. I thought she chose wonderful fabrics for these quilts.
Donna I hope everyone is planning a nice fun Fat Tuesday (after you go and vote). Vann and I celebrated with breakfast at Cracker Barrel. We both had one of those Uncle Herschel's specials: eggs, grits, country ham, fried apples, biscuits, etc. Fat enough, I say.

It's very cloudy and muggy here today. We're supposed to get storms later tonight. I hope that if you're in the path of storms, you stay safe and dry.

Those quilts are so beautiful, I liked the fabrics too. In Argentina the vote is mandatory, so imagine every time we have elections... we have to go the embassy wherever we are and vote.;-(

Wonderful quilts!!! And yeppers I sure did vote!!!

Love the quilt pictures, Susan! Oh, we vote NEXT Tuesday here in Virginia; we weren't super enough to qualify to vote today. :) That's what they told us tonight at poll-official training. And do you know what? The Registrar's office was overrun with phone calls all day long from folks wondering why their precincts were open for them to vote today! LOL!

Love the quilts! Some very talented ladies in your group. By the way, your french toast sounds great. I am going to try to remember to try it this coming weekend.

Thanks so much for sharing the photos of the quilts! They are so beautiful! One day I hope to try a quilt. Right now I am crocheting an afghan for my 1yr old son. I crocheted him one when he was born and it is getting too small.
Have a lovely day!

I voted bright and early yesterday! I too was very serious about my decision (not that I'm not always serious about it). It is such an important moment in our country's history.
