The Greatest of These

8326_1120964139547_1090376533_30301577_6002901_n  Below is one of my very favorite passages in the New Testament. It was penned by the Apostle Paul, and it is truly a God-sent message.

On this last day of an awful year, I wanted to be reminded of the greatest gift God has given us, love, and that as bad as things can be here on earth, and as good as they can be, a wonderous life awaits us when we "see face to face."

1 Corinthians 13
New International Version

1If I speak in the tonguesa of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,b but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Happy New Year, all my blogging friends. Thank you for helping me get through this last year. Most Christians believe that God puts us where he wants us to be, if we'll cooperate with him. I believe God encouraged me to start a blog back in November of 2006 because he knew I would need your love and encouragement for what I was soon to experience. Thank you all, and may God bless you and your families richly in the new year.

What a wonderful witness of the love of Christ you have shown us this past year in the way you have dealt with the blows life has sent you. We have all had our own faith strengthened by watching yours in action. May God's peace overflow in your life in this coming new year and may healing and strength come to you physically. For those who read your blog who do not have Christ in their lives, the start of a new year would be a wonderful time to invite Him into their hearts. That is my prayer to all those readers. God bless you Susan.

I loved your Christmas PJ's. What a good shopper Sophie is! I hope you enjoy your Kindle and it sounds like you will. My husband and I do a lot of audio books via audible.com, using our iPods. I still have the need to read a book, but the audible is a nice addition for when I am doing housework and for travel.

I had to Google to see who coined 'a dark and stormy night' when I realized I had no clue! I loved the little lesson it led me down.

A Year of Dark & Stormy Nights

Scroll Down to Find My Reading List.

Most of you already know that I love to read. And many of you probably know, too, that my favorite book genre is the thriller/suspense/mystery type of book. I grew up reading Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys and watching Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock on tv, and I've been hooked on suspense ever since.

Lens7587892_1255676646mystery_and_thrillers So I've joined Book Chick City's 2010 Thriller & Suspense Reading Challenge. The goal is to read 12 books of this type in the coming year.

Now there are lots and lots of subgenres that count toward this challenge--everything from cozy cat mysteries to hard-core horror. So just because you don't like vampires and werewolves, don't think this challenge isn't for you. If you like to read books that have a element of danger and suspense, you might want to check this one out.

The rules are very loose and forgiving. And there's a subgenre list too to help you decide if this challenge is for you.

Below is where I'll post the books i read in this challenge:

1. The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy
2. A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons
3. The Gates by John Connolly
4. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
5. A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
6. The Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill
7.
8.
9.
10.
11.
12.

WIN A PRIZE!

Here's a little contest I just thought of that goes right along with the subject of suspense and mystery: Whoever can tell me 1) what author first penned the now famous phrase "It was a dark and stormy night," 2) the title of the book the phrase first appeared in, and 3) the year the book was published will win a prize. Everyone who gets the correct answer will receive a prize. DON'T POST YOUR ANSWER HERE!!!!! That would give it away. Instead, if you think you know, e-mail your answer to me at suscleve@aol.com. On the subject line of your e-mail, write "Contest." You have until midnight tomorrow night to get your answer in.

HINT: The author is not Snoopy.

The Girl Can't Help It

Combo 1

Look what I just ordered from 44th Street Fabric Etsy shop! I'm going to make pillowcases for my very own bed with it. I don't even own any pillowcases that I've made myself, although I'm nuts about pillowcases. I buy them at yard sales and thrift stores. I like to mix and match them on my beds. I know that fabric is not something of which I'm in short supply, but I don't have any of this--and it's gorgeous. So while I was ordering fabric to make pillowcases for a friend, I saw this and now it's going to be mine.

Only a couple more days left in this year. 2009 will take its place alongside 1977 (the year my dad and Elvis died) as the two most awful years of my life. There have been other bad years, but these were the worst. Neither year was devoid of blessings, however. 1977 was the year I decided to go back to college, one of the best decisions I've ever made. 2009 saw the election of the first African American U.S. president. It was also a year of a huge outpouring of love and caring on me and my family. It's true: God never closes a door without opening a window.

I can finally see some progress in my efforts to declutter and organize my house. There's still lots left to do; but enough has been accomplished now that I don't feel that sense of immediacy, that "the walls are closing in on me," panic that I felt a few weeks ago.

Sophie and I are declaring this a Fun Day. No decluttering. I'm going to try to do some sewing, if she'll let me. I need to go to the grocery store, so I think I'll take Sophie on a walk in the park on our way.

I hope all of you have a fun day planned too. Or if not, that you make the very most of the day God has given you. There are blessings around every corner. Just take a peek.

Too Much Time at the Groaning Board

3469030442_15725df559 All the Christmassing is over, and I'm still alive and functioning. I ate too much, as I expected I would. So now it's time to lay in a supply of Lean Cuisine and try to lose some of the extra weight that I truly don't need.

It really wasn't all that bad, because I tried not to think too far ahead at any one given time. Just do what's on tap for right now. That seemed to work. I'm tired, but I really feel well enough to get some sewing done. Sophie, however, is not cool with that. Any time I go near the sewing room she comes after me and bugs me with her pawing and nosing until I come back downstairs with her. Then she snuggles back up in her nest on back of the sofa. Maybe the holiday season reminded her somehow of PopPop, and now she needs some special attention. I know she misses him, even though she can't tell me in so many words.

6a00d8341cbb0053ef0120a772c248970b-400wiFor the pillowcase instructions I promised, click on this link. I don't remember where I got these instructions. I was thinking they came from the internet, but I don't see any indication on the sheet of a website, so now I'm thinking a friend gave them to me, but I can't remember which one. Anyway, I've made lots of pillowcases using these instructions, and I can tell you they're fast and easy and make lovely pillowcases.

Draft_lens2365755module18416312photo_1235933473kindle2 And now for the Kindle report I've been promising.

When I finally found time to sit down and learn to use mine, I found that I didn't need a degree in engineering to use it, as is the case with most electronic devices. Its ease of operation is a definite advantage. Almost as easy as a real book, honestly.

Ordering books is easy too. But I have to admit that as I was perusing the bookstore, I made a misclick and ordered a book I hadn't planned to order. But I started reading it before I explored "returning" it, and decided it was entertaining enough to keep. The book is Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich. Halfway through it, I haven't found anything spooky yet, but it is really funny. So I'm not sure how you return books you've ordered by mistake--or even if you can.

The Kindle is very light, making it easy to hold. If you have any kind of condition that causes pain in your hands or arms, as I do, this is a definite plus.

For eyes that need extra help, as mine do, the Kindle is just the ticket. No matter what book you're reading, large print is always an option with the click of a button. In fact, you have several choices for font size. I've found that with the Kindle, I don't need as bright a light as I do with books.

And no matter what size print you choose, there's no scrolling up and down or back and forth to read a page. It's all right there on the screen, then one click of the "next page" button brings up the next screen.

Probably as a consequence of all the above qualities, I find I can read much faster with the Kindle than with a book. And for readers like me, who love to read in bed, it's perfect. No propping up an unwieldy book with pillows.

There's also the advantage of having access to any book published for Kindle, which I think is most of them, almost instantly. No trips to the bookstore or waiting for the mailman to arrive. Most books cost $9.99 to download, but some are even less expensive.

But as much as I love my Kindle, I'm far from ready to give up on paper books altogether. I still have a fairly high stack of real books in my to-be-read supply. And I know there will be some books by favorite authors that I'll want on my bookshelf. And there's just something nice about holding a real book and turning pages that's nice, at least until you hand starts cramping or your arm starts hurting.

I hope this report helps those of you who've been contemplating getting an electronic reader. Of course, everyone is different, but I have no regrets about buying mine. And if I did, I suppose I could return it. So if you think you'd like one, I suggest you give it a try. And if you do, be sure to let me know how you like it.

Looks like just what I "need!" I'm finding the larger print and the more light the better. I know my husband would not mind having books stacked all over, but I'm like you - there's just something about a paper book...

I'm not sure I have ever posted on your blog, but have read it often. My feelings about the Kindle are pretty much right on par with yours. I got mine for a birthday gift - nothing I had ever thought of owning, but I find it really easy to use and read with. It does not replace the feel of a book, but reading is easy. It will be great for traveling, and I drop it in my purse whenever I have an appointment so I can read while waiting. It fits much better than a paperback!

Blessings to you in the New Year. You have handled the challenges and sadness of 2009 with grace and are an inspiration.

I LOVE my Kindle! Not as a "replacement" for "actual" books....but as a wonderful enhancement. You can return books ordered by mistake...there is a line to click at the order acknowlegment point before you return to home. The credit takes a few days to be issued, but cancellation confirmation is immediate. I don't use the Kindle for book club reading though....the lack of page numbers (uses "locations" instead) makes it hard to quickly refer to different passages for discusion when a page # is referenced.

My freezer door looks like that grocery photo - Lean Cuisines top to bottom. That said, we've just ordered 4 Chicago pizzas for New Years Eve from Lou Malinati's. I lived in a Chicago suburb for 7 years as a teen and love Chicago pizzas. Will take a break from Lean Cuisines for that!!

Thanks for the pillow case instructions.

Will you need to move your sewing or cutting station to the dining room to keep Sophie happy?

Call me old fashioned, but I'm not ready for Kindle as long as the public library and intra-library loan are in business.

Hugs! Barbara

I just downloaded the Kindle for IPhone app from ITunes and bought one book. Although the screen on the IPhone is small, it is easy to read. Since the app is free, I thought this would be a good way to test out reading electronically instead of with a book. I listen to books all the time, but sometimes I just want to read. It is great when waiting in lines or waiting at the doctors. Have fun with your Kindle.

First of all, I am DELIGHTED to read that you are planning to sew, spend quiet time with lil' Sophie, and allow Stouffer's to take care of your meals for a bit. Lean Cuisine & I are old friends, & I could LIVE on the fish & rice one or the butternut squash ravioli! Sooooo yummy. I like almost ALL of them! Second, you are so generous to give us the pillowcase instructions! THANK YOU! I intend to try one, and if I find I can actually DO it, I'll be making so many of them because cute/pretty pillowcases are my secret weakness! I could have a hundred and it wouldn't be too many. I buy sets of solid colored sheets so I can buy (now MAKE) all sorts of different cases! Finally, the Kindle. Sigh ... I can't EVER justify buying one (tho' I think they are AWESOME) because I have 2 - yes TWO - 5-LEVEL bookshelves with the books DOUBLE SHELVED (one row behind the other) of unread books. Not to mention the overflow on TOP of the rows of books and on the floor. Oh, the shame of it. Heehee - I'm not REALLY ashamed. I just think of myself as 'rich in reading material.' But I'm glad to know the Kindle is a GOOD thing just in case I ever DO run out of books to read.

I loved reading about your Kindle. Mom and I talked Dad into letting us get him the Nook from Barnes and Noble. He doesn't have it yet, but did get to test one out in the store. He is an avid reader, like you. I think he will like it.

One thing I have noticed lately is that all the electronic gizmos have helped me clear out the clutter. I keep so much more on the computer than I would in file cabinets and bookcases. It is really changing the way I store information & what I allow to come into the house. So, consequently, I don't need all the furniture or storage space once needed for normal living. Of course the style of this house contributes to that too.

I have vaguely thought about the Kindle but since I was lousy for listening to books on tape, I doubt I would actually sit down and read from a Kindle. I do think if I could get Wes to use one, he might enjoy it. He reads all kinds of articles on his IPhone & that screen is pretty small.

I know you are ready to take a break. You certainly deserve one. It's been a long year.

Thanks for the review on the Kindle. I think I'd like it because I could read in the dark without having to turn on the light.

I'll be joining you in Lean Cuisine-land in a week.

You have traversed a remarkable path this year, and, as LaurieC said, you have handled it with grace and inspiration. May the new year bring you a rebirth.

I do like the idea of the Kindle being light and easy to read. But, like you, I'm not yet willing to part with my paper books, so it will be a while before I get one. I'm glad you like yours!

I have a Kindle and i DO love it, BUT, i still like my books, and have a great stack of TBR books that i have to have, and really do love going to Barnes & Noble to look and feel and read. It is just hard to give up paper altogether, the feel and smell of them and all the things added to them in the beginning and ads for different books in the back of paperbacks, I also got all the equipment to try to have the thing read to me and could never figure that one out!!! just beyond me apparently. but i do read thru them much faster, got the latest diana Galbadon book, (close to 1000 pages and had it finished in NO time, worried that it was condensed, but have seen NOTHING that shows or says that the Kindle books are condensed, i do NOT like condensed)

If you enjoyed Plum Spooky you should read all the Stephanie Plum novels -they are hilarious. Great/silly characters - easy reading for sure! If you go to www.fantasticfiction.co.uk you can look them up in order of publication.

Continuing the Celebration

Charming gift

More goodies came in the mail yesterday--a box full of beautiful fabric treats and patterns (first photo) from my Charming Girls Quilt Club friends and a lovely card and ATCs from Joan X, an artist friend (second photo). Thank you, ladies. I am very blessed to have such good and caring friends. Whether with your gifts, cards, or comments, you've all helped make this holiday season much easier than it would have been otherwise.

ATCs My daughter Andy and I went to our friend Ashleigh's wedding yesterday afternoon. The event took place in a beautiful little country church up in St. Clair County, just north of us. Ashleigh was lovely in a blueish-grey silk gown that her talented mom Jennifer made, and a veil that went halfway down the aisle of the little church. Thomas (Ash's husband) looked good too, but not as pretty as his bride.

After the wedding, Andy and I went to Ruby Tuesday's for dinner. Then I came home, walked Sophie, and nested on the couch for several hours while watching "Golden Girls" and "Criminal Minds" reruns.

This afternoon, I'm hosting a birthday party for my sister, Joanne. It will be a small affair, just family. My nephew Jed is frying a turkey for the occasion. It will be my first taste of fried turkey.

Somehow I've managed to make it through all this fun and frivolity with family and friends, and I'm very grateful. But I'm afraid the engine is running down quickly. After today, I'm going to do some serious resting. I'm going to lay in a supply of Lean Cuisines and salad and have some home-alone time. Well, not exactly alone--Sophie will be here.

I haven't really been depressed, as I thought I would be--at least not for long periods. A few times I have been hit with that heavy feeling of loss and grief and had to wash the feeling away with a few tears. But I've been able to spring back and enjoy the blessings that God had put here for me, especially friends and family.

I realize I still haven't posted the pillowcase instructions, but I will. And I also plan to write more about the Kindle (electronic book reader) and my experiences with it so far. But right now, I have to get off my duff and finish cleaning up my kitchen, get a shower, and be ready to party by 2:00 p.m.

Hi Susan!

By now, it's 4 down and none to go. Congratulations, you made it and did well. As you said, some tears as is expected and so normal, and on with life again thereafter. Par for this unwelcome course.

I'm joining you on the Lean Cuisine diet in the coming week and weeks.

As you cozy in, be good to you, give yourself permission to play, to snooze, to ignore what you don't want to do, and to take it all one day at a time. Shrea, shrea.

Hugs!

Two Down, Two to Go

Jammies  A little crying, a lot of laughing, way too much eating. I made it through Christmas Eve Soup Night at The Yellow House and Christmas Day Dinner at my sister's house. Today is Ashleigh's (friend) wedding and tomorrow Joanne's (my sister) birthday party. Then I'm telling everyone I'm officially on hiatus for at least a week. No more cooking, partying, or going anywhere till after New Years (I hope).

Actually, I won't need to cook. I must have thought I was making soup for General Patton's Third Army. My refrigerator is full of containers of Santa Fe soup left over from Thursday night, as well as one large container of Andy's Italian wedding soup (she only cooked enough to feed a football team). So I have to get all that in the freezer today so it won't go bad. It was much too good to waste.

I truly hope everyone had as great a Christmas as I did. The only thing that would have made it better would be to have Vann here. But what a Christmas he must have celebrated, huh?

Here are a few photos of some gifts I received from family. The photo above shows my Christmas Eve PJs, a gift from Sophie of course. She also gave Andy a pair just like them.

Kindle
Vann planned to get me a Kindle for Christmas. I made sure his plan was carried out. More about my first attempts to use it later.

Fabric2
The makings for a new Christmas quilt for Christmas 2010 from Andy and Jesse.

Quantum
Quantum Mechanics lecture series on DVD by The Teaching Company from my sister Joanne.

Necklace
Very appropriate necklace from my niece Buffy (she made it herself).

Flowers
Beautiful bouquet from Phillip and Carrie.
     ***
I also want to wish my BIL Ben a happy birthday today. If you're reading this, Ben, I hope your day is delightful.

Soup sounds wonderful, nice that you have enough to freeze. We had chopped beef barbeque from a local place for our Christmas dinner and will eat on that til its gone(we got 5 pounds). I'm having mine on a baked potato today.

Love the fabric for the Christmas quilt, I can't wait to see what you do with it!

A girl after my own heart! I get teased ALL the time about freezing soup. Ha! But guess who laughs on an unexpected cold day when I don't REALLY want to cook & I can pull out some delicious homemade soup! Yum! And you look adorable in your cozy pjs! Sophie, what excellent taste you have. I WISH I could wear pjs but even the large lady places don't make pjs to fit ME. I have a relatively 'normal' waist size but my thighs and booty are the size of the state in which I reside. LOL! If pjs DO pull up over my thighs & hips, they fall OFF my waist. Sigh. Your other gifts are wonderful, and so are YOU! You're right, incidentally! Vann must have had a GLORIOUS Christmas celebration! Don't laugh, but when I said goodnight to you last night (did I tell you I ALWAYS say good night to you and other heart-close friends who are far away?) I also told Vann good night. Rest a bit today! You've earned it! I love you!

Hang in there for the last two holiday season events. You can do it. Remember that water-proof mascara is your friend.

We freeze soup here, too. It just makes good sense: no wasted food and convenient quick suppers in the future.

Stitches of Love

Heroesstevens_1224__357638l

Mary Stevens estimates she's made about 700 personalized quilts for child cancer patients since she began in 1996, when her then-4-year-old son was diagnosed with leukemia.

Mary signs all her hand-sewn works of art the same way: She writes her initials inside a tiny heart that appears in a corner, where it’s easily overlooked.

Virtual anonymity doesn’t bother the 47-year-old Canton resident at all. She doesn’t need to see or meet the strangers who unexpectedly receive one of her exquisite quilts.

“I know all about their journey,” Stevens said quietly.

Heroesstevens_1224__357604l Stevens makes quilts for newly diagnosed young patients of the Aflac Cancer Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. Cheerful quilts whipped up in shades of pink, yellow and green, their surfaces sprinkled with puppy dogs, skateboards or flowers.

One-of-a-kind quilts personalized for Ashley or Brody or whatever other names the hospital’s nurses and social workers pass along to her on a regular basis. Cozy quilts designed to make treatment rooms feel less chilly and the overall circumstances not quite as scary.

While her son, Michael, endured long hours of chemotherapy, Mary tried to keep herself calm by stitching a quilt covered with ladybugs and strawberries.

She overheard another 4-year-old patient named Carly tell her mother, “I want one of those.”

Heroesstevens_1224__357580l  “When I finished, I gave it to her,” said Stevens, who works in the lunchroom at Nicholson Elementary School in Marietta and learned quilting from the grandmother of her husband, Terry. “And that’s how it started.”

Michael is 17 and in remission now. Most mornings, Stevens drops him off at Kell High School, then quilts in the Nicholson library until her workday begins. She pays for all the materials herself, which eat up her entire paycheck most weeks.

For patient confidentiality reasons, the nurses tell her only the first names and ages of the youngsters who’ll end up cuddling in her quilts. Recently, though, she became reacquainted with Carly at a social gathering.

Now a teenager, Carly didn’t recall their long ago meeting in the hospital. She still had the ladybug quilt that started it all, although that wasn’t what had Stevens so quietly elated.

“I never knew what happened to her until I saw her again last year,” Stevens said. “I was relieved. I knew she had made it.”

Too Pooped to Pop

23 I spent the morning working at a local food pantry, packing and distributing food to some wonderful people. God blessed me with the ability to help with this ministry and afterward to grocery shop. But that was it. I didn't even have enough spunk left to put my groceries away when I got home. I've been on the couch ever since, except for taking Sophie out a couple of times and answering the door for several neighbors who came bearing gifts.

Thanks, Ashleigh, for the banana nut bread, Brad for the pound cake, and my dear young friend Alex for the lovely Christmas tea towel. I can't believe the love that my neighbors are showing me this Christmas. Well, of course I can believe it. What am I saying? That's the kind of people they all are. I'm so blessed to live in this neighborhood.

Anyway, I promised I would get the pillowcase pattern out, scan it, and send it to some of you. But that's not going to happen tonight. I'll try to do it first thing in the morning before I use all my spoons* straightening up the house and getting ready for Soup Night tomorrow night.

*Christine Miserandino, author of "The Spoon Theory," suffers from lupus. Her essay contains an excellent analogy for explaining to a healthy person what it's like to have a chronic illness. Many of us with Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have adopted her spoon theory as our own to explain to our friends and family that while we might look hale and hearty, we can actually feel like crap. If you click on my link in the paragraph above, you can read all about Christine spoon theory. Maybe it applies to some of you as well.

Thanks, Susan. I had never heard of the spoon analogy and it is so apt. I was diagnosed with lupus 10 years ago after 2 years of fatigue. I had a full time job as a surgical nurse and two teen sons. I stopped going to church because I was too tired to get there.

I am fortunate in the my lupus isn't too bad, but I have the misfortune of no longer being able to work. I'm sick too often or too tired and quickly use up my allotted absence periods. I miss being a nurse so very much.

Hope you're feeling more rested and have some of your spoons back!

Hugs!

Tk you so much for sharing the "Spoon Theory" Susan! I had never heard it before and plan on sharing it w/my Husband, Gene. He suffers terribly from severe multi-level spinal stenosis and and he spends the majority of his days in his adjustable bed. I don't think anyone understands the pain and agony that he has endured for almost 5 years. It also tells the story of our Daughter's life. She lived w/very few spoons for 23 long years and I so wish she had had the opportunity to read about the spoons!

Please know that you are in my prayers and I hope that knowing that Vann will be experiencing the greatest celebraton of all brings peace to your heart and warmth to your soul.

Just look at you, Susan! Here YOU are going through so much this year, yet you take the time to share this with all of us who either HAVE chronic illnesses (you know I have Lupus and Fibro) or those who may not understand how much stamina and determination it takes us just to get through the day sometimes. Then you turn around and help out at a food pantry AFTER making pillowcases the night before, and go to the store to get items for your soup party. You are such a good person; such a loving, caring friend. How could your friends & neighbors NOT show you the same love you always show US? I hope so much that you KNOW I would do anything in the world for you. And I don't EVER offer unless I mean what I am offering. I love you, Susan, and am sending you hugs and smiles! Some are for Miss Sophie as well, of course!

Susan, you have such a wonderful spirit. To make time for those that need a little extra kindness and help, especially this time of year. You truly are a special soul and in spite of everything, you are keeping the Spirit of Christmas alive and well with your actions. I completely understand the groceries not being put away and leaving other things undone in order to rest. It is so hard to make myself get up and moving sometimes and there are days that I don't make it. (Like today) I was going to go with hubby to a doctors appt, then make the 40-50 mile drive to see our youngest grandchildren (9 and 10) and our oldest daughter and take some things to them. But, I have a mean chest cold and with my Scleroderma, Sjogrens Syndrome and Neuropathy, the cold was the clincher. I just can't make the short trip and wouldn't anyway because I don't want to spread germs along with good cheer. I'm a huge fan of the 'spoon theory' too. It doesn't always work but I find that is when I just don't put my heart into it. 'Operator Error' so to speak, LOL. I do hope you are feeling better very soon. Have a wonderful Christmas Susan. My thoughts and prayers are with you this holiday season as I am certain it hurts your heart at times, yet you still set such a wonderful example for all of us. Gentle hugs and God Bless. (I'll keep the germs here at this end.) Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to bed, LOL.

They don't realize we who are on chemo or other meds for chronic conditions suffer in dozens of little ways they take for granted EVERY single day! You save your spoons, now, you hear?!!
As for me: I've been leaving LOTS of my spoons in the drawer and not pushing myself for a good while now; and you know what? It works out just fine! Those who love us understand, and the others we don't need anyhow!Keep on resting, dear Susan! You inspire us once again.......

Thank you Susan. I have struggled with how to explain to others just what I am going through. This is perfect. I have already passed it on to a few dear friends. Countdown to Christmas

PC1

I finished the last pillowcase, and Sophie and I delivered them to our little buddies. They weren't home, so we left the bag hanging on the inside of the storm door.

Then we went for a long walk, and now even Sophie is tired. And I'm really really tired. I'm going to take a bit of a siesta, then I hope I feel up to baking cookies this afternoon. Tomorrow I have to clean house and go to the grocery store for soup makings for Christmas Eve.

I want to thank everyone who has sent me goodies and cards and Santas in the mail. I might not get around to personally thanking everyone right away, but you will eventually hear from me. Just know that every time Shane (my mailman) shows up with a new package or two, I'm just like a kid on Christmas morning. Sophie gets into the act too, and we usually have paper and boxes everywhere when we're finished. Thank you all, my dear friends. Your thoughtfulness is very appreciated.

Below are some more pics of the pillowcases. And after them, some photos of the Cardinal Tree, which I guess is finished. I never have hung the little red balls, but I'm not counting on them at this point.

I really like your cardinal tree. I Just bought two cardinals this year - my first two to add to my christmas decorations. I really like them. I could see how a collection might start.

Your christmas pillowcases are very cute! Is that ribbon on the trim or is it fabric? Very cute. I am sure they will be enjoyed immensely. Enjoy your nap this afternoon!

Busy Day

Goodies

I feel like I've accomplished lots today. I baked a rum cake and delivered it to my friend and neighbor Maria. I finished three pillow cases and almost finished a fourth. I'll finish it in the morning.

The pillow cases for for my little friends and neighbors Sissy, Sam, Andrew, and Jonathan who live around the corner from me. Last night they came with their mom and dad to deliver a giant platter of home baked bread, cookies, candies, etc., to me. (See photo above.) The oldest, Jonathan, is about 8 or 9, I think. Their mom, Becky, homeschools all four of them. She was admiring some of my quilts, and she made the comment, "I don't have the patience to do that." I said, "Becky, you're a homeschooling mom of four little kids. Don't talk to me about patience."

They are the sweetest family, and I love them every one. They really know what the word "neighbor" means. And they are good ones.

I'll photograph the pillowcases that I'm making for the kids tomorrow after the last one is finished. I'm too tired right now to do anything else except snuggle up and on the couch and listen to Sophie bark at joggers and kids playing soccer outside.

Hope everyone has a pleasant evening.

I wore myself out trekking through the snow several times today. The street is clear but the long driveway still has about 8" and some ice. It was 17*F this morning. Brrrrrrrrrrr!

Sweet dreams!

I have been busy baking too! 11 fruitcakes so far...5 bundt and 6 medium loaves. The postal workers at our nearby post office call me their job security. I host a lot of swaps and get lots of mail as well as mail out tons. They work so hard for me that I always take over a bundt cake each year. I went in yesterday to mail out 11 boxes and they were talking about banana pudding...When I opened their cake to show it they immediately started saying that the banana pudding was going to lose out! :)

I hope your Christmas is filled with Christ's eternal peace.

Glory in the Flower

Poinsettias

What though the radiance which was once so bright
Be now forever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendour in the grass, or glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
 Strength in what remains behind;

~~William Wordsworth

The Cat Came Back

Spooky_cat_stock_by_rustymermaid_stock  I have to get this down before I decide I'm just making it up. And I'm not. Just ask Sophie. She'll bear witness.

A few days ago, Sophie and I were enjoying a walk around the neighborhood. About half-way down our street, Sophie ran under a neighbor's front deck and started barking loudly. It was her cat bark; I know it well. So I followed her, admonishing her to leave the kitty cat alone. When I got to Sophie, however, I found that the cat wasn't a bit bothered by Sophie's barking. The cat was dead. The cat was not asleep, the cat was not playing possum. The cat was dead. DEAD! He lay stretched out in a dead-cat position with his eyes half open. Sophie was barking right in his face as loud as she has ever barked. The cat didn't move a whisker. The cat was dead.

I pulled Sophie away and came home, very sad that such a pretty kitty had died of no apparent cause. He had not a mark on him that I could see. I was so upset, I even mentioned the episode on my Facebook page.

This afternoon, about an hour ago, Sophie and I walked by the same house. The same cat, the cat that was quite obviously dead a few days ago was lying on the porch as alive as he could be. Now, don't laugh at me. I'm serious. The cat was dead three days ago. Today, the cat isn't dead anymore.

Yes it's the same cat. Only two cats live at that house. A scruffy little black fluffy one and the bigger one that died, which looks like a siamese only with long fluffy hair. Sort of like that spooky-eyed cat in the photo above. They were both there when the big one was dead, and they were both there today on the porch when the dead one was alive.

I've heard of cats returning from the dead; but I've never seen one. My mama even told a story about when she was a child and she found her cat dead. She buried it in the garden, and the next morning, she said, the cat was sitting on the back porch washing the garden dirt out of it's fur.

I don't think I ever completely believed Mama's cat resurrection story, and for that I'm sorry. Now I know that a cat really does have more than one life, maybe even nine of them for all I know. Either that, or there's one foxy feline down the street that's an excellent actor with the ability to lie perfectly still and stiff in the face of a loudly barking schnoodle.

Below is a little ditty that we used to sing when we were kids, my sister and I. I don't remember where or when we first heard it. It's apropos of the situation that Sophie and I find ourselves in, vis-a-vis the dead cat that isn't dead anymore. The lyrics are a bit gruesome. Reader discretion is advised. It's called:

 "The Cat Came Back."

Now old Mr. Johnson had troubles of his own,

He had a yellow cat that wouldn't leave his home,

He tried and he tried to get that cat away,

Gave it to a man going far away.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away.

Now the man around the corner swore he'd kill the cat on sight,

He loaded up his shotgun with nails and dynamites,

He waited and he waited for the cat to come around,

Ninety-seven pieces of the man is all they found.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away.

Gave it to a little boy with a dollar note,

Told him to take it up the river in a boat,

They tied a rope around its neck; it must've weighed a pound,

Now they drag the river for the little boy that drowned.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away.

Gave it to man going up in a balloon,

Told him to take it to the man on the Moon,

The balloon came down about 90 miles away,

Where the man is now, I dare not say.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away.

They gave it to a man going way out west,

Told him to take it to the one he loved the best,

First, the train hit the curve, then it jumped the rail.

Not a soul was left behind to tell the gruesome tale.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away, away, away, away.

Away across the ocean he did send the cat at last,

Vessel out alone today taking water fast,

People all began to pray the boat began to toss,

A great big gust of wind came by and every soul was lost.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away.

On a telegraph wire, sparrows sitting in a bunch,

The cat was feeling hungry, thought she’d like them for a lunch,

Climbed softly up the pole, and when he reached the top,

Put his foot in the electric wire, which tied him in a knot.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought he was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away.

Now the cat was a possessor of a family of a own,

With seven little kittens and along came a cyclone,

Blew the houses all apart and tossed the cat around,

The air was full of kittens and not a one was found.

But the cat came back, the very next day,

The cat came back, they thought she was a goner,

But the cat came back, he just wouldn't stay away, away, away, away,

Just wouldn't stay away.

I saw this cat you speak of last night when I was coming to your house, and also when I was leaving. He was sitting pretty as he pleased in front of his house. But I didn't know it was the dead cat. I wondered of course, but I didn't know. I looked at it and said to myself, "I wonder if that is the dead cat Mama was talking about?" Hmmmm... weird. Just plain weird.

On 12/18/2009, Nicole said ...

That cat must have been having some sort of fit, or was an ace at playing possum.
Your song reminds me of the old story "Taily-Po". The old man and his hound dogs keep going one by one to investigate the sound of something weird in the swamp. It calls out "Give me back my taily-po". (You have to say it in a really spooky voice). One by one they disappear into the swamp and are never seen again. After the creature gets the old man he calls out "Now I've got my taily-po".

tricky feline! They are pretty crafty...

my auntie who always had a bunch of cats, called one day to say she buried the wrong cat..a cat with similar markings to one of hers had died in her yard (it was really dead)..she buried it and later noticed HER cat was still in the yard..to this day, she has no clue whos cat she buried...

I poked at her and she didnt move..I snatched her up and her head flopped over..(this is a cat who is mean and bites) I started shaking her as hard as I could and she was just limp..my heart sank...I wondered how to tell my kids..shook her really hard a few more times..she lifted her head up very slowly, shook her head a few times, jumped down and went to her food..I stayed up the rest of the night watching that cat..she was just fine!!
