The Greatest of These

8326_1120964139547_1090376533_30301577_6002901_n  Below is one of my very favorite passages in the New Testament. It was penned by the Apostle Paul, and it is truly a God-sent message.

On this last day of an awful year, I wanted to be reminded of the greatest gift God has given us, love, and that as bad as things can be here on earth, and as good as they can be, a wonderous life awaits us when we "see face to face."

1 Corinthians 13
New International Version

1If I speak in the tonguesa of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames,b but have not love, I gain nothing.

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Happy New Year, all my blogging friends. Thank you for helping me get through this last year. Most Christians believe that God puts us where he wants us to be, if we'll cooperate with him. I believe God encouraged me to start a blog back in November of 2006 because he knew I would need your love and encouragement for what I was soon to experience. Thank you all, and may God bless you and your families richly in the new year.

Susan,
I recently came across your blog and wanted to encourage you as you have encouraged me. While dealing with your loss this year you have shown a real Christ-like spirit. I appreciate the honesty of your sorrow and the witness of your dependence on Christ. As a fellow Christian I pray He will continue to carry you through and give you much joy.

Allison

What a wonderful witness of the love of Christ you have shown us this past year in the way you have dealt with the blows life has sent you. We have all had our own faith strengthened by watching yours in action. May God's peace overflow in your life in this coming new year and may healing and strength come to you physically. For those who read your blog who do not have Christ in their lives, the start of a new year would be a wonderful time to invite Him into their hearts. That is my prayer to all those readers. God bless you Susan.

I add my love and good wishes for a wonderful and MUCH smoother 2010! We bloggers - especially the creative bloggers because most of us are love-givers, thing-givers, caregivers - have to stay close to each other. I am extraordinarily grateful for your presence in my life! Happy New Year, lil' Susan! Big, gentle hugs to you! (Please, give sweet Sophie some from Aunty Kai, too!)

Thank you for such a beautiful post Susan. A lovely reminder of why I enjoy reading your blog. That is one of my favorite Bible verses.

You have had a rough year, but you're an inspiration to anyone who will have to face similar situations. I pray that none of us will and that 2010 will be a wonderful year for us all!

What a wonderful picture of Vann and Sophie.

That verse touched me as it is the verse that the minister spoke at our Wedding - Nov 1994. I still remember those words. My heart goes out to you Susan and I wish you all the best wishes I can for 2010.

Hugs
Pam

Amen! My sister is in stage 3 of cancer(below her left ear to the bottom of her neck and everywhere in between). She is 63 yrs. old and has never smoked. She is scared and I'm scared but we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. He has given us this time to hug one another, cry together, and tell each other how much we care. Every day is truly a gift from Him. Praise God for His love and thank you for your encouraging blog.Pat

Susan, may 2010 be full of God's continued comfort, love, and healing for you.

I loved your Christmas PJ's. What a good shopper Sophie is! I hope you enjoy your Kindle and it sounds like you will. My husband and I do a lot of audio books via audible.com, using our iPods. I still have the need to read a book, but the audible is a nice addition for when I am doing housework and for travel.

I had to Google to see who coined 'a dark and stormy night' when I realized I had no clue! I loved the little lesson it led me down.

Hugs,
Lallee

This is one of my favorite verses, too! I embroidered this on the borders of my very first quilt! It is amazing how God watches out for us so far in advance, before we even know a trial is coming! Wishing you a blessed and joyful New Year!
