A Year of Dark & Stormy Nights

Scroll Down to Find My Reading List.

Most of you already know that I love to read. And many of you probably know, too, that my favorite book genre is the thriller/suspense/mystery type of book. I grew up reading Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys and watching Perry Mason and Alfred Hitchcock on tv, and I've been hooked on suspense ever since.

Lens7587892_1255676646mystery_and_thrillers So I've joined Book Chick City's 2010 Thriller & Suspense Reading Challenge. The goal is to read 12 books of this type in the coming year.

Now there are lots and lots of subgenres that count toward this challenge--everything from cozy cat mysteries to hard-core horror. So just because you don't like vampires and werewolves, don't think this challenge isn't for you. If you like to read books that have a element of danger and suspense, you might want to check this one out.

The rules are very loose and forgiving. And there's a subgenre list too to help you decide if this challenge is for you.

Below is where I'll post the books i read in this challenge:

1. The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy
2. A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons
3. The Gates by John Connolly
4. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
5. A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick
6. The Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill

WIN A PRIZE!

Here's a little contest I just thought of that goes right along with the subject of suspense and mystery: Whoever can tell me 1) what author first penned the now famous phrase "It was a dark and stormy night," 2) the title of the book the phrase first appeared in, and 3) the year the book was published will win a prize. Everyone who gets the correct answer will receive a prize. DON'T POST YOUR ANSWER HERE!!!!! That would give it away. Instead, if you think you know, e-mail your answer to me at suscleve@aol.com. On the subject line of your e-mail, write "Contest." You have until midnight tomorrow night to get your answer in.

HINT: The author is not Snoopy.

Just wanted to let you know that I love your book reviews. Because of that, I bought and am devouring "Under the Dome". I agree that it is excellent. So many story lines and characters. I also like your review of the Kindle. Someday a Kindle will be mine!

I emailed you my answer a while ago. And, you're right, it wasn't Snoopy. Also wasn't Alfred E. Newman.

Just found your blog yesterday and LOVE it! I think Sophie is so cute..I also have a schnauzer and now I know why she has such curly hair...she is mixed with poodle! Her name is Jasmine and she is about 8, not sure, got her from a shelter...do you have any ideas on how to cope with Fibro? I also have it and 2 types of arthritis. I don't take any meds, just Tylenol when it REALLY gets too much...you were right about some people not understanding how you can look so NORMAL and feel so bad! Thanks for this wonderful blog...it is going to be one of my daily ones I visit!
Hope you have a good year this 2010!
