Surprise, surprise, surprise!

OctSurprise My friend/neighbor Karen was really surprised last night when she and her husband Paul walked into their daughter Lisa's home and all of us yelled "Surprise!" That's little neighbor Miss Brooke in the foreground running to give the first congratulatory hug.

Karen thought she and Paul were picking up Lisa to go out to eat to celebrate Karen's retirement. Instead, it was a surprise party.

Most of the neighborhood was there as well as family and other friends. The house was stuffed--and it's a roomy house, and beautiful too.

Hubby Paul came on crutches because he's recuperating from a ruptured baker's cyst on his knee. Bless his heart, he spent theOctPaulNolan  evening in a big easy chair with his foot propped up. That's him in the next photo with our friend and neighbor Nolan.

It was a great evening and a great party. Lisa, Nancy, and probably others outdid themselves with the food. All us neighbors had a wonderful time visiting and catching up on each others' lives.

The big news of the night (in addition to Karen's retirement) was Ashleigh's move to Lafayette. A pall has settled over the whole neighborhood. It's hard to be happy for her because we're all so sad to see her go. Especially her mom and dad.

I think I gave a wrong impression with my post about Ashleigh's impending marriage and move. Actually, she shared the home next door with her parents, Jennifer and John, who really own the house. They're staying, thank goodness. But Ash left last night, after her last day at work. She'll be back in a couple of weeks to get her things.

Octogarden So on this cold and rainy Halloween Day, I've been in the sewing room making quilt blocks. Now I'm going downstairs to do a little hand sewing, watch the Georgia football game, and wait for trick-or-treaters. There's enough candy here to choke a horse. I didn't go overboard, only bought what I thought I'd give away. But then Andy came in yesterday evening with a bag full from work. Maybe two bags full. It's a bunch. So I hope we have a ton of trick-a-treaters tonight to get rid it.

Happy Halloween to all. Don't let the ghosties and goblins get you. Below are a few more photos from the party.

Late breaking news: I just got a call from my friend, Mr. Bill (one of Vann's hunting buddies) that he is in the hospital and has to have open heart bypass surgery early Monday morning. We'd appreciate prayers from our prayer warriors out there.

You have such a kind sweet neighborhood! Can I come and live there? I live in the country so we do not have any trick-or-treaters.
Love the quilt you're making.
Blessings and Hugs

Congrats to Karen! What a great neighborhood you live in (as I've thought a gazillion times).

I'm so glad Sophie won't have to train new neighbors to have her treats at the ready and you won't have to wonder who will buy Ashleigh's house. Whew!!!

Love the quilt!

How hard do I have to fight the urge to reply to the news about Mr Bill with "OH NO!" a la SNL? Prayers are with him, his family, and his medical team and will continue.

If you have candy left over, just send it back to work with Andy. Medical people eat anything and evrything. I know 'cause I'm one!!

Happy Halloween to you! Hugs!!

What a great group of friends and neighbors! I've written Mr. Bill's name down so I can see it and pray for him. Happy Retirement, Karen - looking forward to that myself!

Wow! I wish I lived in such a close neighborhood! As much as I'd hoped otherwise, THIS one is not very friendly. Sigh. But I love reading about YOURS, and besides, I have my 'BLOGGER' neighborhood and YOU live there! Also - beautiful quilt!!!! And you KNOW I have your friend, Mr. Bill on the prayer list. Keep us all posted on his progress, please!

Hummingbirds and Halloween

4043415776_d0173a33c3 When Courtney saw the hummingbird pattern, she remembered my post about a hummingbird bringing me a message from Vann. So Courtney decided to use to pattern to make this special gift for me.

Using a piece of one of her husband's old shirts as the background, Courtney painted and hand embroidered the hummingbird and then framed it as a shadow box. Every time I look at it, I remember Vann filling the hummingbird feeders from spring till early autumn, keeping the juice always fresh for the little "hummers," as he called them.

Thank you so much, Courtney. It's a beautiful and thoughtful gift, and the perfect memory piece for Vann.

I got word last night that our neighborhood trunk or treat has been cancelled because ourTort_sophie_vann  host neighbor, Paul, is laid up with orthopedic problems. So Sophie and I will be giving out treats from The Yellow House. Sophie will be barking excitedly every time the door bell rings. The neighborhood kids know her and aren't intimidated by her barking, but if we get any visitor kids, I'll have to convince them that the little black fur ball is all bark and no bite.

Hope everyone is planning a great Halloween weekend. Isn't Autumn great? Halloween, football, big pots of chili and fritos. I always like to watch two movies during Halloween week: "The Shining" and "Hocus Pocus". I saw The Shining already, but I haven't seen "Hocus Pocus" yet. Hey, I think I remember a video tape of that movie somewhere around here. I go in search of it now.

I, too, have a black, barking Schnauzer-dog that will be welcoming all the neighborhood goblins coming for treats at our house tomorrow night.

Look at Soph licking her chops in that picture! Too cute! It looks like she's ready to get her some treats, too!! Woof! We all miss you, Uncle Vann!

What a beautiful thoughtful gift. I love anything that stirs up fond loving memories and the beautiful hummingbird is the kind of gift you will treasure forever. Have fun passing out treats to the little ones and I hope your dear friend is feeling better soon. We plan on a few trick or treaters but most of them now go to church parties, trunk or treat affairs and generally staying out of the cold if they can. I know we have far to many treats and that brings up a serious problem...I love all of them and I could be in trouble here unless I find a family member that will take them to work and put them in a 'help yourself' bowl after Halloween. Of course, I'll keep just a few for myself, LOL. The movie Hocus Pocus is sooooo fun to watch. I love the story line, the cast and the delightful humor. It's a great one and I also have it here somewhere, now I will be going of to search for it. Have a wonderful weekend.

Oh! The framed hummingbird is lovely and the thoughtfulness that preceded it's creation is heart warming. How perfectly wonderful of Courtney and what a warm fuzzy hug for you whenever you see it.

Hope Paul feels better soon.

You reminded me I forgot to get Fritos at the grocery. Phooey!

Am washing border flannels before having hot buttered rum! I love autumn, too.

The Good News IS the Bad News

14533_1149633057141_1117020633_30387325_1255621_n I know I should be congratulating my sweet friend and next door neighbor Ashleigh (on right in photo) this morning. But what she undoubtedly thinks of as a time to celebrate, I'm just thinking of as more sad news. Well, sort of.

You see, Ash and her boyfriend Thomas got engaged recently. Then Thomas took a job in Lafayette, La., and now they're moving down there and Ash won't be mine and Sophie's next door neighbor anymore. And we're going to miss her something awful.

Ashleigh and my daughter Andy (Angela) work at the same medical facility. The photo shows them at Ash's going-away sharing a hug. Tomorrow is Ashleigh's last day at work.

Ashleigh was a big blessing to me, Vann, and Andy this past year. She was always there with warm banana bread, hand knitted hats and blankets for Vann, and even a warm knitted scarf for me last winter when temps got so cold. She always had a big hug for Vann, and he thought the world of her. And Sophie knows that Asleigh always has a special treat in her pocket for the black dog. Why, she even goes over and knocks on the front door at Ashleigh's house to get those treats.

I do pray that this is a happy new beginning for Ashleigh and Thomas. Even though the neighborhood is losing Ash's presence (and her warm banana bread). May God go with you, sweetie, and keep you safe.

A Finished Quilt Top

Library - 15985

I finally convinced myself that I would feel better if I was able to complete something this week. So today, I have sewn the borders on this little quilt top, which measures about 50 inches square. I'm not sure this has made me feel better physically, but I sure am glad to have it done. Now I can send it to the quilter or maybe try to machine quilt it myself.

My mailbox held some surprises today too. In fact, I've received several gifties from blogging friends recently. I'll show them later.

I wish I could tell Vann how kind people have been to me since his passing. It would make him very happy. Even my first husband's family (which I still consider part of my own and who practically adopted Vann) has been so sweet to me with calls and cards. It's amazing and heartwarming. If I can count my wealth in friends, I'm truly well heeled. And you, my dear blogging buddies, are a big part of that wealth. Thank you all for your blog visits, comments, e-mails, cards, gifts, and for the comfort of knowing you're there.

Now I'm going to take my tired, aching body and Sophie downstairs, and we're going to put in some serious couch time.

Hope you'll rest your tired self and perhaps nap.

Thanks to Amy for sharing that video link--what a good commentary on grief. I loved the part about us being spirits who come down to earth for a few human years-that says in a nutshell what I have often thought about my son's death.

Susan, you are doing fine. I know you have to have some downtime to process all that has and will happen. It's unfortunate your neighbor is leaving too. Bummer.

Do you have the energy to walk in the mornings? If so, a quick walk around the neighborhood with Sophie might be a good routine to start. It doesn't have to be a long walk but something to open and refresh your mind.

Sending love,
Debra

I cut 4.5 inch squares and 1.5 inch squares for the corners. The borders are the same dimensions (1.5 inch inner borders and 4.5 inch outer border). Thanks for the compliments"

My French General fat quarter bundle just arrived. Now when my book gets here, I can get started on my challenge quilt. I found the quilt photo on Flickr, an example of the quilt pattern we're making, also in red and white.

I'm not having a good week so far. My energy level is nonexistent practically. And the stiffness and pain are a big problem this week too. Could be the weather--dark, damp, and chilly. I don't know. But I don't feel like doing anything. And I'm not doing much, except lying on the couch and watching tv or playing on the computer or reading. Haven't been in the sewing room since Saturday. And I won't get there today, I don't think.

I have some important things coming up later in the week, so I hope the fibro backs off for a while. I already missed a friends' mothers' funeral today. Didn't feel like making the drive, and didn't feel like attending a funeral for another pancreatic cancer victim.

I don't feel like this post is even making much sense. So I guess I should just sign off and go back to watching tv. Maybe the sun will shine tomorrow. Let's hope.

I hear you, honey! Hope you have some hot tea, good soup, and crackers (need that salt when you're puny). It's been rainy, dark, and chilly here, too, after a night of rain. I love sitting in the lamplight on days like this.

My shoulders are aching and I have a bit of fever so hope I'm not catching anything. I'll be on the couch soon.

Love the Snowball quilt that you found pictured on Flickr. Wonder what size that quiltmaker cut her large squares?

This morning I finished the center of DS2's flannel quilt. It's 36"x60" with 12" blocks set 3 across and 5 rows down (you feel bad, so need to do the math yourself!). Am auditioning 1st border fabrics and awaiting the arrival of a charming blue flannel tweed I found on-line for the outer border.

Be good to you and stay cozy! Germ-free hugs!

No excuses.

    A Pinwheel Weekend

Mosaic1bd6ee8ca6ed3aeb155a5152afc57927523be954 Got a lot of sewing done yesterday. I almost finished a pinwheel baby quilt top. Would have finished if Sophie would have left me alone last night. But she kept demanding some snuggle time, so I gave up and gave in.

Today after church, instead of working on the same pinwheel quilt, I cut some pieces for the one I started at retreat, "October Garden."

My plan is to finish the baby pinwheel quilt tomorrow and then work on putting the Flutterby blocks together the rest of the week. But you know how my plans often turn out. I seem to get more done sometimes when I don't plan at all.

My church is holding its Fall Festival tonight, but I don't feel like going. A friend of mine lost her mother to pancreatic cancer yesterday, and I'm not feeling in a festive mood. Would rather stay home and watch scary movies, a thing I love to do as Halloween approaches.

Tonight I'm watching "The Shining," one of my very most favorite movies. I've always thought that, while Stanley Kubrick more or less murdered (or redrumed) Stephen King's book, he did such a great job creating that cold, isolated, agoraphobic/claustrophobic atmosphere, that I can forgive him.

The photos in the mosaic are from my Flickr Faves. Below are links for each photo credit.

On 10/25/2009, Barbara Anne said ...

    Love the pinwheels!!

The Shining??????????? NO WAY!! I got it as a book club book decades ago. I read it on one day, staying up until 3am with all the house lights on and wouldn't let DH go to bed, then I couldn't sleep. I like the silly parts of Halloween, too.

    Hugs to you and Sophie.

I'm so happy that your staying so busy! The pinwheels are fantastic :) Such a lovely way to spend the day! I'm so sorry about your Friend's Mom. Now about those scary movies!!! OMG, I can't even listen to one, much less actually watch it (LOL).

What a great collection of pinwheels -- they feel so much more happy than scary movies!

    Hope you are doing OK!

I love the way #5 is quilted -- just lovely! I agree about The Shining. We went to visit that hotel they used for many of the scenes, The Stanley, and I was suitably creeped out, even in daylight!

    On 10/26/2009, Nancy said ...

Susan, I adore the pinwheel quilts, there are so many options for these both for childrens quilts and beautiful scrappy quilts. My sis in law made a queen size pinwheel quilt out of Thimbleberry scraps. The blocks were (I think) 8 - 8 1/2 in. then she added a couple of borders and gave it as a wedding gift, it was a really lovely piece. Ah now to the shining!!! One of my all time favorite Stephen King books and movies. I was just wondering though if you had seen the miniseries remake that King did himself. He said he was never quite satisfied with the original, mainly because Jacks transition to the insane state of mind was too fast in the original. I watched them back to back last year (it was couch potatoe night, lol) and I really still prefer the original. But the remake isn't bad, just not as intense. Have you ever seen the movie "The Changling" with George C. Scott? WOW, talk about a seriously scary movie. A truly wonderful creep you right out of your socks movie. For me, it is the scariest movie I have EVER seen in my 60 years, and it doesn't use blood and guts...just good old creepy ghost story stuff.

    On 10/26/2009, Gayle said ...

While I did not watch The Shining, my husband and teenage daughters did...and I heard screams coming from the family room. :-)Love the pinwheels!

I'm so sorry another person lost the battle with pancreatic cancer. My heart feels sad, Susan! And your quilt is going to be amazing; even MORE SO because there are such pieces of love worked into it. Oh, I don't mean the actual stitching. I mean things like your stopping to give sweet Sophie cuddles. Those things add a beautiful feel to a piece even if the person holding it doesn't know WHY. Now - scary movies???? Oh, my goodness! I can't, don't, won't EVEN watch those. Eeeeeks!

That movie is too spooky for me! I watched the Goonies the other night... kind of scary? lol

The Quilting Devil Made Me Do It

6a011571f73a8f970b0120a60bd3f0970b-800wi There's nothing like a new challenge to get me enthused about a new project. I know, I know. The last thing I need is a new project until I finish some of the ones I've started. But wait till you see. You'll understand why I couldn't resist.

First of all, this is the quilt we're going to make. Isn't it beautiful? And what could be easier? A simple snowball block. So I signed up and ordered the book, 40 Fabulous Quick-Cut Quilts.6a011571f73a8f970b0120a60bd474970b-800wi

At first I thought I might make my quilt in pinks instead of reds. After all, pink is just light red, so I'd be within the guidelines.

    .

    But then I saw this:

    Rouenneries_sample_300

It's Rouenneries by French General for Moda. The color pallet is luscious: faded reds, dusty pinks, creams, and grays. The photo shows only a small sampling of the entire line. It wasn't easy to find what I wanted, a bundle of fat quarters. Hancock's website claimed they had it on backorder, until I ordered it. Then they sent me an e-mail telling me that "backorder" means they aren't going to get any more. But after an extensive search, I found the fat quarter bundle at Fabrics.com. and quickly ordered it. So, as soon as my book and fabrics arrive, I'll be set to begin a new project.

If you'd like to take part in this challenge, it's being sponsored by Allyson at Fat Cat Quilts and Nicole at Sister's Choice Quilts. Oh yeah, there's also a fabric swap involved in this challenge, plus prize giveaways and drawings. So now do you understand why I couldn't resist?

Love the quilt but am trying to make 2 (yes, 2) quilts before Christmas. I was just thinking this would be a dandy pattern for my blues and yellows until I read about red and white, so perhaps I pass on the challenge. I can at least think about it for a few days.

Back to sewing 4 patches the quick way a la Billie Lauder's "Quick Quilt Tips."

    Hugs!

    Four Days of Fun

    Mag Flutterbugs

This was one of the best retreats I've ever experienced. There were only twelve of us attending, but that was just enough for lots of laughter and fellowship while getting lots of sewing done.

The food was out of this world. Elizabeth, our hostess and cook, served us things like meat loaf, rosemary pork loin, asparagus casserole, pintos with ham over rice, turnip green casserole (oh yum!), southwestern chicken chili, blue corn cornbread...oh, I could go on and on, but you get the picture. And the desserts! Chocolate cake, cherry cobbler, creme brulee. The woman is a genius in the kitchen.

Mag Pinwheel But of course the real goal at our retreat was to get lots of sewing done (in spite of having our tummies filled thee times a day with great food), and we did. I think Mary S. outdid us all by finishing about a jillion projects, including one of her monster quilt tops, shown below. I finished all the blocks for the "Flutterbugs" quilt (some blocks shown above) and started a pinwheel quilt that I'm tentatively calling "October Garden" (photo at right). I got all the pieces cut out for it and three blocks made.

Below are photos of what my quilting friends did at retreat.

    Mag MaryEllen

    Mag Jane

    Mag Barb Y

    Mag Checks

    Mag Barbara

    Mag Margie bgs

    Mag Margie

    Mag Towels

Note: Margie purchased the tea towels in the photo above already embroidered with the snowmen. I think she said they came from Target and cost $1 each. She added the prairie point borders, and now she has some excellent holiday gifts that were inexpensive and easy to make.

    Mag squares

    Mag Monsters

    Mag Monster
Note: Mary S. is making Monster quilts for each one of her three daughters to put away for Mary's future grandchildren. Shown above is one that she embroidered and one that she's begun using hand applique.

    Mag Myrna

    Mag nine patch
Note: Doris finished another Blooming Nine Patch top (shown above in progress). I think this is about the 15th one she has made. She says they're easy, but I'm not convinced.

    Mag Nancy

Many thanks to my Nancy, Doris, Mary, Margie, Jane, Barbara Y., Barbara S., Myrna, Virginia, Mary Ellen, and Martha for being a part of these four days of fun. And thanks for Elizabeth, Iris, and the rest of the staff at Magnolia Park for making sure we were comfortable and well fed.

    Another Flutterbug

    Get-attachment-1.aspx

I'm home. I got here early this afternoon. After picking Sophie up at Paul's, returning my phone calls, going through the mail, and spending some time with the Black Dog, I went by to visit a friend who is caring for her terminally ill mother. Then I went to Bible study. This is the first time I've had time to write a blog entry, and now I'm really too tired to write a good report on retreat and download photos.

So for your viewing pleasure, I've given you the above beautiful butterfly photo, taken by my friend Gregg, who was a photo protege of Vann's. And Vann would be extremely proud of the fine photographer his young friend has become. Thanks, Gregg, for sharing your photos with me.

Tomorrow, I promise a report on my wonderful, relaxing, fun quilting retreat, along with lots of photos. As fun as it was, though, I'm glad to be home with my Sophie.

I just wanted to say thank you for your very generous gifts to Granny. I have been giving her a little along the way so she would not be overwhelmed by everyones kindness. When she opened your box today, she just leaned back like she was fainting and looked at me and said I have never received so many gifts and cards. She looked at me and said, How do all these people know about me? She was a doll and you outdid yourself. Thank you is just not enough. I will be posting about it tomorrow hopefully. I hope you are doing well. I told Granny to pray for you during this time in your life. She said she would and if Granny says she will pray I will promise you that before she went to bed tonight my little (almost) 96 year old Granny was doing just what she said she would- Praying for you.

    Report From Magnolia Park

Working hard to finish up my blocks for the "Flutterbugs" (new name) quilt. Have six more blocks to make to have all 39 done. Might start on something else this afternoon if I'm not too tired when I finish the Flutterbugs.

Food here is awesome. Homestyle cooking with lots of carbs and calories. I'll have to go on a fast when I get home.

Retreat is over tomorrow afternoon. I've had a great time with my friends. Lots of laughter is good for the soul.

The beds are comfy, so I have slept well. The fibromyalgia is better than last week, but I have had to take frequent rest breaks to keep the back and legs going.

Back to the sewing machine. I'm taking pics to show when I get home. Bye.

How good to hear from you and applause for your diligence in working nearly to completion on your Flutterbugs (new name noted) blocks!

Have you ever read "Rx for Quilters" by Dr. Susan Mech? She's a quilter and had many things to say about how frequently you need to move around while sewing, the lighting you need (and need more of as your eyes age), table height, and a wealth of other information. I imagine that her tips would be appreciated by your fibro aches.

I'm so glad you and your friends have laughed so much. Laughter, friends, food, and fabrics. Nothing could be finer, not even Carolina in the morning!

Sophie will be so happy to see you! Hugs!

    A Little Book of Beauty

Book 1 Today I just have to show you what I found in my mailbox yesterday: this wonderful little book filled with original ATCs in memory of Vann, created by my friends at the Yahoo artists group Cloth Paper Studio.  Thank you so very much, my CPS friends. Your thoughtfulness and talent contained in these beautiful cards touch my heart.

Below are photos of all the ATCs inside. Please click to enlarge each photo to see the intricate details.

The first photo shows the card made by my good friend Phyllis King. I love that it has Vann's name on it.

    Book 4 Vann

The next one is by Katherine Wilson. She included this quote, a paraphrase of John 14:27, on the back of the card: "Peace, I leave with you, my friend. Shalom, my Peace I give you."
    Book 3

Wendy Coyne created the next two ATCs. Wendy is one of the group moms at CPS.

    Book 5

    Book 9

Next is Emily Pruitt's creation, with its beautiful sentiment: "God Cares."

    Book 6

In my friend Diane Ferguson's card, "the red bird has flown from the Yellow House." Diane, my froggy friend, is another of the CPS group moms.

    Book 8

Another sweet birdie graces Sioux's card. I hope you can see the beautiful shimmer on this one.

    Book 10

I love the lily and the shades of green of Carol Abel's card. She included the poem by Robyn Rancman on the back. I can hear Vann's voice in this poem.

    Book 11

Miss Me, But Let Me Go

When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free!
Miss me a little, but not for long,
And not with your head bowed low.
Remember the love we once shared,
Miss me, but let me go!
For this a journey we all must take,
    And each must go alone;
It's all a part of the master's plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friends we know,
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,
Miss me, but let me go.

The next card, "To Love & Be Loved," is an original by Robinsunne from her book The Great Library ATC Swap.

    Book 12

Ansley McKay created the pink beauty below, filled with flowers, hearts, lace, and polka dots, some of my favorite things.

    Book 13

Meri Abrams' playing card ATC is beautifully embellished on both sides, as you can see in the photos below.

    Book 14 Book 14b

Rachel Murphree, another of the CPS list moms, explained the symbolism on her card to me: the three hearts are me, Vann, and Sophie and the yellow square is our Yellow House. The green strip is for "life that keeps on amid the grief and sadness."

    Book 17

And finally, the beautiful card below, created by and sent with healing thoughts from Norma Soulet, shows some more of my favorite motifs: dragonflies, angels, and another heart.
    Book 18

Book 19 Thank you, my beautiful CPS friends. You can't possibly know what these little works or art, along with the care and condolences that went into them, mean to me.

She told me that she would love to have everyone over sometime. Isn't she cute? My prayers are with you. Hey, can u come over to my house and get me started cleaning??? I need help. Yours is lookng good.

What a beautiful thing for them to do! Each ATC is filled with love, and it SHOWS. That poem - Miss me, but let me go - is VERY moving!

What beautiful, artful, creative, expressions of the love, care, and concern that these talented friends in the ATC group have for you.

Perhaps these will find their way into your new office and the colors and fabrics for that nurturing space might come from them?

What a blessing to be surrounded by such love.

    Hugs!

Oh, my Lord. I haven't visited in a while and did not know of Vann's passing. I am SO sorry! Please accept my condolences and know that your blog has told the world what a sweet guy he was. I'm glad to have 'known' him.

Indeed, I still have tears in my eyes as I type this - those cards and the Miss Me but Let Me Go Poem are totally inspirational - I am sure that you will turn to them for comfort and inspiration in the coming months.

What a lovely gift. Each ATC is a precious little memory created just for you.

I heard reference to this poem today and immediately thought of you. It's from Splendour in the grass by William wordsworth.

    "What though the radiance
    which was once so bright
Be now forever taken from my sight,
Though nothing can bring back the hour
    Of splendour in the grass,
    of glory in the flower,
We will grieve not, rather find
    Strength in what remains behind..."
