700th Post...

Giftwrap ...since November 2006 when I started Blackberry Creek. It has been a very fun 700. I've met so many sweet people and made oodles of great friends. Thanks to all of you for reading my blog and for laughing, crying, and praying with me.

Seven hundred isn't really a milestone number like 100 or 1,000 or 500 or a million. But because of all the support Vann and I have received during the last couple of months, I wanted to do something special. So here's what I'm doing:

A BLOGGY GIVEAWAY!!!!

Leave a comment here by Sunday midnight or so (or whenever I close the comments), and Sophie and I will draw for the winner of a great surprise package. I can't tell you what the prize is because I don't even know. But it'll be good.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. I'm finally going for a much needed haircut this afternoon.

Selvage Mania

Selvage 1 Some time back, in the fall I think, I put out a call to members of my guild for selvages that they were going to throw away. The photo at left shows only a smidgen few of the ones I got. I have a big plastic box full.

I think I had a plan when I asked for the selvages, but I can't remember what it was if I did. Since then, I've seen so many great projects that bloggers have done using selvages that now I have too many options. But I think it's going to be either a vest or a bag--or a vest AND a bag. I have enough selvages to do both.

My house stinks. I had a large bag of frozen Big Red shrimp in my freezer and decided to boil them all up before they go bad. So I boiled too big pots full of Big Reds, and now the house smells like a seaside fish market. Peeeeewww! Anybody want to come over and help me peel them?

The weather is pretty again today. Sunshine and semi-mild temps. I hope all you ice/snow bound folks are thawing out. Our Phillip called this week to say it was -20 degrees with 12 inches of snow (or something along those lines) in Laramie, Wyoming. I can't even imagine! Y'all stay warm, hear?

I put my selvages and little fabric bits in the bushes for the birds, squirrels, and critters to line nests and burrows with. Last winter I was delighted to find a fallen nest with some of my fabric woven in!! Sweet!

I never thought of making something from the selvages. I'll have to google/image that. Interesting! I'll still have plenty of giblets for the wildlife.

Now about that shrimp, I'll be over as soon as I can. Seriously good eating! Laissez les bon temps roulez! Meanwhile, the odor can be lessened if you boil baking soda for a while and be sure you've taken out the garbage!

I was reading a blog called "Simplify" (link on my site) and the author is a fabric designer. Her mom made her a framed picture of the selvages of each of her fabrics. She must have glued them down so they stay put under the glass of the frame. Anyway, it was extremely cool, and her mom even signed it with her name in embroidery.

On 02/02/2009, Diane said ...

I think the selveges would look great in a log cabin style block to emphasize the stripiness of them. There's probably not enough for seams, so you might just have to glue them down and call them greeting card collages. Kinda edgy, doncha think? Edgy, get it? Selveges, edgy? Yeah, I know. Not so much.

First Siggy Block Complete

Siggy I made this as a practice block, getting ready for Connie's Siggy Block Swap. But after I finished, I decided it looks good enough to use in the swap. So now I have to make only 59 more.

The blocks are easy to make. The hardest part is deciding what fabrics to use out of all the stuff in my sewing room.

Do you ever get so attached to your stash fabrics that you are hesitant to cut them? I do. Although they aren't good for much just lying there. I have some fabrics that I've had for years and years only because I've become so attached to them I can't bring myself to cut them. Then there are others that I've had for years and years and don't know why I ever bought them.

It's rainy and chilly here today. But I know our weather is nothing compared with what some of you are experiencing. I know a large swath of the country is buried under ice and snow and many people are without electricity. If you're one of them, then you're probably not reading this. I hope everyone is warm and dry and has their power back on soon.

Thanks to all of you who offered ways to obtain the tulip pattern. I finally found the pattern with the newsletter. It was in plain sight today. Yesterday, though, that pattern wasn't there. I would testify in a court of law that it wasn't. I'm not that blind!

Beautiful signature block! I, too, am really attached to my stash although I have made it a goal this year to start using some up! I have enjoyed Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilts and am using up stash for those. I told myself that it's not like they are going to stop making beautiful fabrics so I might as well use the old up :)

Susan ~ The fabric is beautiful for your first siggy. I'm assuming they will all be alike (or just about all anyway). I am so glad I joined and will get one of them. :) I've just washed my fabrics and will start on mine soon.

I have had the same problem with fabrics and so this year I decided that no fabric was so wonderful that I couldn't cut and use it. I am having a jolly time opening my closet, pulling out fabric and making these teen quilts. Ultimately, the pleasure for me is using the fabric so I have been depriving myself and I am really not into deprivation!

On 01/29/2009, May Kristin said ...

Gorgeous siggy block.
Wished I had signed up for this swap.
Oh yes! Me to have a lot of fabrics I find it hard to use, but I've been more clever to use them over the last yeas!

On 01/30/2009, Kai said ...

I SOOOOOO need to live near you so you could teach me to quilt! Of course, first you'd have to teach me how to thread my blasted sewing machine. The SHAME of it! Anyway, I love quilts and your block is really, really pretty! Because I cannot sew worth pinto beans, I don't feel reluctant to cut fabric. Shoot, I just make a sad mess of my fabric. But I DO feel that way about YARN. I ADORE my yarn! I look at it and visualize it made up into this or that, and the pretty colors & textures just thrill me to bits! Isn't that pathetic? LOL! At any rate, your block is gorgeous!

On 02/01/2009, Nicole Reed said ...

I have an entire fat quarter bundle of Paris Flea Market from what, 5 or 6 years ago? It is so pretty I can 't bear to cut it. My sister Kate says fabric doesn't go bad, but I am going to get tired of it before I ever make it into a quilt!

Sambo and the Sundae Quilt

10024_7 I want to make this! It's called "Tulip Sundae," and it's a creation by Sue Nickels. I found it in this month's issue of Alex Anderson and Ricky's Tims' Quilt Show e-mail newsletter. There are instructions, a materials list, everything except a PATTERN! I can't find the pattern anywhere.

Now some of you talented artists might wonder why I would need a pattern, i.e., why can't I just draw those simple shapes? Well, y'all don't know me and drawing. We don't even come close to be compatible.

Some of my earliest and worst childhood memories involve my inability to draw doodly-squat. When I was in first grade, our teacher assigned us to draw a scene from the book Little Black Sambo. This is quite a good book which has since become somewhat controversial because the name Sambo later became a racial slur, which it wasn't at the time the book was written; it was the name of a little Indian boy who outsmarts some tigers who want to "eat him up." But I digress.

Back to my traumatic Sam & Tigersmemory, the assignment to draw a scene from the book. I don't think I had ever drawn anything in my life. I was only 6, you see, and although my mama, daddy, and big sister were all artistic sorts, none of their artisticism rubbed off on me. I was completely bumfuzzled. But I chose a scene of Sambo watching while the tigers ran around and around a palm tree. What I drew bore not even a slight resemblance to that scene. I was so embarrassed. My teacher tacked many of the pictures that the little Rembrandts had drawn on the bulletin board--not mine. I think she threw mine in the trash. I don't remember seeing it again after I turned it--not that I ever wanted to.

Anyway, maybe I can just enlarge the above photo of the quiltlet and trace it to get a pattern.

Anybody else old enough to have read this book in elementary school?

That was always a favorite book in our house -- I wish my mother had been a saver!

On 01/27/2009, Nellie said ...

Yes, I remember "Little Black Sambo" being one of my favorite childhood stories.

As for duplicating or enlarging or decreasing an image, here's a method that I use.
- Trace the original image onto tissue paper
- Fold the drawing on the tissue to create a grid pattern
- Fold or draw those grid lines on another piece of paper that is the size you want the image to fill
- Draw the lines of the image you see in each square of tissue on the new enlarged grid.

With this method you can even change the proportions of the original drawing to be a bit wider or taller.

I had the book at home and think it's still here, somewhere. My mother was a saver. I'm just a few years younger, and it wasn't a school book by the time I got there - at least at my school in Memphis.

I have a quiltie friend who drafts all quilt patterns to make them just the size she wants them to be. She must have been a math major!

Good luck with the enlarging. I'd start with enlarging it on a copy machine and keep going until it's the size you want. Make several copies so you can cut one or two up for patterns. It's cute!

On 01/27/2009, Barbara Anne said ...

p.s. On the Alex and Tim newsletter link, did you click on "Projects", then on View Project that's under the photo of your chosen quiltlet? Actually, if you click to enlarge the photo, it's nearly large enough to trace on your computer screen! Will either of those choices get you a usable pattern? Hope so. I'm not a member there, so could not "view the project".

Glad Vann is feeling so good. Your grandson and his date a charming!

Cheers!

I don't think I read it in school but I know for sure it was read to me by my parents. I don't remember the book it was in, but I sure remember the story. I wondered what tiger butter would taste like.

I believe I'm three years younger than you, as I graduated from HS in 1965.

On 01/27/2009, Kai said ...

Gosh, everyone else had wonderful ideas for duplicating the pattern. I'm such a chowderhead. LOL! I just finished emailing Sue & asked her if she has the pattern for sale & if so, I told her I am buying it for you! Let's see if she answers me. Fingers crossed! I, too am familiar with the book and someday will tell you (via email) a secret about that story. Too long for the blog! I'll let you know if Sue responds to my email! LOVE YOU! Oh! And I bet you ANYTHING your drawing was every bit as wonderful as the others! So THERE, to that old teacher ANYWAY!

I love that quiltlet, so cute. My grandmother read Little Black Sambo to me, I loved the part about the tigers turning into butter! The older stories always seemed to have a moral to them. I'm so glad Vann had a good report from the doctor. And...(I'm catching up!) love the picture of your grandson and date...so cute together!

What a cute and colorful and happy little quilt! Tell me the finished size you want to make yours, and I'll be happy to draw it off for you, honey chile! (And YES! I was read "Little Black Sambo" many a day and night 60-odd years ago, along with my falling-apart copy of "Uncle Remus"!

I am right there with you in the drawing department. I will never forget the day in 3rd grade when the teacher gave everyone some paper to draw a picture of something - I don't remember what. When she came to me, she gave me scissors and a couple of magazines and suggested I cut out pictures and paste them on my paper. I was so embarrassed. I showed her though, I won first place ($35 prize) with a picture I drew. It was a bunny sitting "under" a tree and the sun shining. I had drawn a shadow of the bunny and apparently the judges were impressed because I had the shadow at the right angle. Never mind that the bunny was as tall as the tree and looked more like a snowman, LOL.

Teachers - what are we going to do with 'em? In my teaching career I tried to read that story to my kids - but decided it was too risky in our politically correct society and didn't. It certainly was read to me in my childhood. I also was a fan of the Bobbsey Twin series as a kid and I tried to read that to children in the classroom - that took WAY too much reading ahead to make that series politically correct! Times change, don't they? I think you've made-up for that lack of creativity you felt as a child - you're creating some pretty wonderful things now! PAM

Believe it or not, Little Black Sambo is rather out of favor these days. As a kid, it was one of my favorite books, and I thought Sambo was so brave, and admired him for his devotion to his mother and father. He was loved by his family and had a mom who made pancakes--how great is that? When I was teaching, I read it to my kindergarten and they were always enthralled. One time when the director of the school saw me pull it out, she frowned at me disapprovingly, so I didn't bring it back to school. As soon as I get a grandchild, it is coming out again!

OMG are we really that old. I remember having to read this outloud in class in elementary school. I didn't particularly like it then and I certainly don't now.

Fuzzy Prom Pic

PRom Frames Last spring, my grandson Jesse and his girlfriend Katie went to Jesse's senior prom. I helped out by taking Jesse to be fitted for his tux. But you know, I never saw the happy couple all gussied up--not even a photo. Well this weekend, my daughter finally e-mailed me a photo. It's a little bitty picture and a little blurry, but there they are. Beautiful, aren't they?

In other news, I have to report that our patient (my husband) and his dog are out roaming the neighborhood. It's a beautiful springlike day, with sunshine and everything. The last I saw of them, they were going down the street on the 4-wheeler.

Vann is really feeling better these days. Thanks to all for your comments on our great news from Dr. L. I have a ton of e-mails and comments to answer, so if I don't answer yours right away, don't give up on me and know I appreciate you all very much--all three of us (me, Vann, and Sophie) do.

The Power of Prayer

Balloons Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variation nor shadow of turning.
                       --James 1:17

Very, VERY good news today: Dr. L. telephoned Vann a little while ago with the news that according to the blood work from last Monday, Vann's tumor markers are down by 40%. Praise God!

We had to let our blog friends know right away because we know so many of you have been praying and sending loving thoughts to us. As Vann reminded me, the fight's not over (but I feel like we did win a battle). So please continue to pray for Vann's healing. We know that God is listening and we know that he's working in Vann's life and in his body. Thank you all and may God bless you with showers of grace.

I went back to read your November blogs to see what Vann's condition was because I only found your fantastic blog about early December. I am so pleased he is doing better. Our oncologist became one of our best friends - trust and rough times bring out the true person and they see you at your rawest. I have Vann in my prayers. Now work hard and push that 40% to 80% for the next time!

I Can't Believe I Read the Whole Thing!

WWEI think the title should be Book Without End--1,014 pages of murder, sex, greed, plague, death, distruction, disaster, squalor, enslavement, injustice, stupidity, bad teeth, and I don't know what all were the themes of this tome.

I finished it last night--and was very happy to be done. This sequel to Pillars of the Earth, set in 14th century England, is extremely well written and grabs you from the very first page. I couldn't put it down. It's just that too much of a bunch of bad people tends to get on one's nerves.

I do recommend it, though. Especially if you like historical fiction.

Connie over at Cootie Bug is hosting an International Siggy Block Swap. I think I'm going to join. She has seven slots left, so if you're interested, you'd better act fast. It's a simple block, and the idea of receiving 59 blocks from quilters all over the world is just too much for me to pass up. The deadline is April 15, but I'm sure it'll be lots more fun than filing your tax return. And it's a good way to use up some scraps.

Finally for today, here's a message from a bunch of Born Again Americans that you might like. I did.

I've just finished reading the other book Pillars of the Earth and I'm glad I finished it too. I really enjoyed it. I started reading it in the spring and enjoyed it so much then got busy and had to put it down and everytime I picked it up I could continue without missing a beat..*lol*. Around Christmas I took more time reading a bit each evening before going to bed only because I was busy and too tired to read too long. It is a great book and I like the way the author writes.
I'll have to see whether I'll tackle the 2nd one. Its good to know you enjoyed it.
Come by and visit sometime...
and have a lovely evening

On 01/23/2009, Barbara Anne said ...

Yep, there's that same happy, sweet smile!!

My graduating class in suburban Chicago had 824 kids in it and we so didn't fit in one photo! The year was 1969 and this Southern girl headed back to Memphis for nursing school at the end of the summer.

On 01/23/2009, Nicole Reed said ...

What a cutie! Then and now! What struck me about the photo is the lack of ethnic diversity. In any high school picture nowadays, half the class or more would be Asian, Hispanic or African American. In my Class of 66 yearbook, I think we had one African American boy (Tom) and a beautiful Japanese girl (Miriam). Times have changed and it is a good thing!

Queen of Soul--and Millinery

3276-haaaaat_head_

I think of all the inspirational images I have of the inauguration, this will stay with me longest. Who cannot admire a woman who would wear that hat at an inauguration in front of 6 billion people? I love you, Aretha.

Vann is recovering from his two intensive chemo days. No more for two weeks! Hurray and Hallelujah!

It's sunny and cold here today. Vann is going to rest up and recover from chemo, and I'm going to do laundry or go grocery shopping, whichever comes first. Tomorrow I hope to finish up the Hearts.Com quilt top. I'm almost finished.

BUT WAIT
Had to take Sophie out for a romp. We stopped at the mailbox, and look what was there!

Catalog I guess I'm just going to have to stop going to the mailbox if I want to stop buying more fabric. There's so much great new fabric inside these pages, including the Cicely Mary Baker fairies and some more fairies and birds and trees and cherries and ladybugs and dragonflies and pinks and blues and greens and.....

If you don't get this catalog, go to Hancock's of Paducah website and see all the fabric treasures. Like these pictured below.

FStg61green

FStg66pink-1

Healing Scripture for the Day

"Behold, I will bring you health and cure, and I will cure you, and will reveal unto you the abundance of peace and truth." Jeremiah: 33:6

Note: I just had a thought. Wouldn't that fabric (taupe with blue birds) make gorgeous dining room wallpaper. With chair railing, painted pale green or blue or tan below and the wallpaper above the chair railing?

On 01/21/2009, Molly said ...

I am so there with you on that hat!!! The color of her outfit shows off her beauty, IMO. I was pretty much glued to the tv yesterday, it was just awesome!

Glad Vann is getting a break and hope his latest treatments don't get him down for too long.

Love your idea for that "wall paper" fabric, it would be gorgeous in my dining room, lol! The bottom part of ours is a really nice stained paneling and my dad "forbids" me to paint it so I'm stuck with redoing what's above the chair rail. I really don't mind not painting the bottom. Dad put new wall paper up the summer Mark and I married, coming up on 19 years ago, so its WELL past time for something new.

On 01/22/2009, Joan said ...

Glad Vann is responding to the treatment.
Watched most of the Inauguration on tv here in England.
Gorgeous hat.

On 01/22/2009, Barbara Anne said ...

Oh! OH!!! Did you see on pages 132 and 133 of the new Hancock's catalog that there are even more Flower Fairies that my local shop has? In addition to the pink, periwinkle, and pale yellow, there is a Christmas panel and a hawthorne panel that is in autumn colors. YUM!! In this catalog the framed picture panels are called "cards". Does this mean there are 24 addition and different fairies to be had?! YUM!

And, yes, many, many other fabrics also lure and tantalize me, but my stash is healthy and I can be strong. I think I can!

So glad chemo is over for a little while and that Vann will have a break. Hope he's feeling as well as possible. Prayers continue for each of you.

Into the Woods and Home Again

Woods

Across the street from The Yellow House is a small wooded area. Sophie loves to visit there because there are lots of squirrels, so we walk the trails at least once a day in good weather. There are trails because one of our neighbors cleared them so that the neighborhood children could ride their dirt bikes there. He also helped them build a clubhouse on the lot.
Clubhouse

I know, I know, it looks more like a hobo shelter than a clubhouse--but, trust me, the kids love it, and I think I would too if I were a kid.

In addition to walking all through these woods and smelling the smells and treeing the squirrels, Sophie sometimes finds ground critters that interest her. Here she is digging to China to try to get at something that I never saw and she never got. Probably a chipmunk, or maybe just a bug.

Digging Sophie on Log

Yesterday afternoon, I decided to bite the bullet and clean out my junk drawer in the kitchen. It's been needing cleaning and organizing for months (years, really), but I just dreaded it so much, I kept putting it off. I was sure it would take hours. Vann and I were at WalMart yesterday, and I picked up a drawer organizer for the task. When I got home and got started, it took me about 10 minutes. If I'd known I could have done that so quickly, that drawer would have been neatened long ago.

Drawer Before Drawer After 2
Update on Flower Fairy Fabric: I think you've all convinced me. I need that fabric. Thanks.

It must a lovely trail for you to walk each day - today was a lovely mild day- I think it was above zero so for January that is positively balmy. We have quite a bit of snow and the warm weather will make it sticky for snowmen and snowballs.

Arctic Air Mass Moving This Way

Earl Grey Tea Temps are falling here. We've had heavy frost every morning for several days, but it's supposed to get colder. Single digits, they say.

What's your favorite cold weather drink? Mine's coffee, of course. But next to that, I love Earl Grey tea, and so does Vann. I drink mine with sugar and cream; Vann likes his with sugar and lemon.

I have no errands to run today and nothing pressing to do. So maybe--MAYBE--I'll get some sewing done. D'ya think?

I haven't answered a lot of your comments lately. It seems I have time for blogging or answering e-mails, but not both. If I don't answer you, please know that I read and treasure every single comment and thank you all for all your prayers and well wishes for Vann. We hold you close in our hearts and prayers.

And thanks to all our you who encouraged me to buy the Flower Fairies fabric. I just might after all.

I love your fresh new & pretty blog banner.
My favorite hot beverage "for everyday" is black coffee, hot and fresh, nothing added. So good. For other times I do like hot tea and also the instant coffees that come in the little tins, International Coffees, I believe is the brand name. Sometimes I make it and add some whipped cream from a can which tastes so yummy.

On 01/14/2009, JoAnn said ...

Oh you should buy it - it is so special. I went looking for some of the fairy books yesterday - online. I thought about buying them - and then said NO - and then thought about my brother - who passed away just two days ago - then I said YES - I'll buy them because he would have laughed when he saw the books and enjoyed them with me - life is so precious and so short - get the fabric - enjoy it completely - and think of your blog friends when you look at the fabric - and think of love and laughter and good times - that is LIFE!!!!

On 01/14/2009, Rian said ...

Get off the fence and buy the fabric. You won't regret buying it, buy you just might regret passing it up.

My favorite cold weather drink is brandy. I do love a cappuccino with double espresso, or just plain espresso, but in the world of tea, I like Earl Grey with milk and a teensy bit of sugar.

On 01/15/2009, Clare said ...

I hope you were able to stay in out of the cold today. I grew up in the Midwest - so I know cold weather. But after living in a warmer climate for so long I do not deal with it quite the same. We have actually had sunshine and warmer weather the last couple of days - It is like I came out of hibernation. Stay warm - and I hope you get some time to sew. My favorite cold weather drink would have to be coffee.

Flower Fairies

Fairy Catalog I have loved Cicely Mary Barker's "Flower Fairies" since I discovered them a few years ago. And now they can be had in fabric.

When I pulled this Keepsake Quilting catalog out of my mailbox a little while ago, I almost leapt for joy. Then I remembered that any leaping I might do these days might lead to catastrophe, what with stiff joints, painful muscles, and a bad case of klutzitis. And my next thought, much to my distess, was that I'm not buying anymore fabric until I've cleared out some of what I have.

Oh shoot! No fair! Drat! Bummer! I guess I'd better start cutting and stitching so I can get rid of that room full of fabric before the Flower Fairies are no longer available. So 'scuse me. I'm going to the sewing room. Well, right after I take a shower and run my errands for the day--if I'm not too tired when I get back.

But before I go, let me show you this little Flower Fairy book I picked up at a yard sale some time ago.

In addition to the very large panels that Keepsake has, there are also panels with 12 fairy blocks (each picture is approx 6"x8") that come in periwinkle, pink, and "sunshine". Each panel has different fairies so if you get all 3 colorways, you have 36 fairies! Yes, I also was not going to buy fabric this year since I have an abundant stash, but these sweet fairies have always spoken to me, so I have all 3 panels of 12 fairies!! Delightful!

I've been visiting here for several months and have Vann and you who love him in my prayers, too.

I have seen those fairies yesterday when I was placing an order at Keepsake, they are beautiful! I don't receive the catalog, I don't know why because I everything I buy goes to a private courier in New York that ships to Middle East.So I should get the catalog like any other, no? Well, I don't know, I sent a couple of mails but never got an answer. On the other hand the orders arrive perfect. ;-) I haven't seen those before on fabric, they should be on the part of the catalog that says " Must have"....

You know I paint on porcelain. Well, my teacher used to paint those fairies. They were awsome because those faces are so sweet. Hope you make a lovely project with that fabric. Oh, I wrote a lot today, haha.

When you get ready to make your fairy quilt, let me know and I'll embroider some fairy blocks for you. I have some very pretty designs since my soon to be daughter-in-law likes fairies too.

Oh my goodness!!! I have blogged about her books before too, Thing 2 is OBSESSED with her books. As you know I have recently gotten rid of more than half my supplies, but no doubt I will be ordering from them. The Apple Blossam Fairy even looks like her holding her little cousin! You should order too, we could work on them together. This seriously the push I need, I love the kit but the fabric is stellar too. Any suggestions on a good pattern for a person who has no attention span?
How are you and Vann doing? I have been thinking of you both.

That is THE absolute most BEAUTIFUL fabric!!!! Buy it. Or tell me where to get it and I'll get it for you! You know, if you were wanting to hold off on getting it because you didn't know what to do with it....you could always make me a quilt with the fairy fabric =) Just sayin'...

I love the fairies and I would love to see are large version of them in a quilt. Im a huge Brian fraud fan. While I was in rehab for being addicted to elicit substances at Narconon VistaBay I spent a lot of time illustrating similar fairies and I would love to see them translated.

Where's My Mind When I Need It Most?

Hearts

I had planned to attend the January meeting of Birmingham Quilters Guild this morning. Mary was going to pick me up, and we were going together. I'm glad she called first. Quilt guild had completely slipped my mind, and I was well on my way to sleeping in when the phone rang. So instead of trying to get awake and get ready in 15 minutes, I begged off.

Last week was a busy one for me and Vann. Monday and Tuesday held long chemo sessions, which brought on fatigue and nausea for Vann. Then Wednesday, I had my mammies grammed and my pappy--well, you know, my annual checkup with all the fun and frivolity that entails. On Friday, we met with our friend Stuart about some financial stuff in the morning; then I had book club in the afternoon. We were both so tired by yesterday, that we skipped church and stayed in all day.

This week should be a little less hectic. No chemo, no doctor's appointments at all. I do need to get a haircut. And Phillip is flying in on Friday. Maybe I'll get a little sewing room time to work on the heart quilt (blocks above). Happy Monday, everyone.

Seven Years With Sophie

Sophie 4Seven years ago today, this little fur ball came into the world. She was a yankee then, born in New York State to a grey schnauzer named Bailey and a black poodle named Ebony. Sophie's all Alabama girl now.

We met Bailey's human mom, Dawn, on the internet a couple of months before the pups were born. We were looking for a schnoodle, and they weren't easy to find back then. When we learned the New York pups were going to be up for adoption, we put in our adoption papers for Sophie.

"What if we don't have any girls," Dawn asked. "Well of course there'll be a girl," I answered. "Who ever heard of a boy named Sophie?"

Bailey gave birth to two girls, and I don't know how Dawn knew which one was Sophie. I guess Soph told her. (That's Dawn's hands in the photo at left. That photo was taken before we ever met the Sophinator.

It has been a fun seven years. Sophie has brought so much joy not only to our house, but also to the whole neighborhood. Everyone around here knows Sophie, and she knows where everyone keeps a supply of treats.

Happy Birthday to our good girl. May you have many, many, many, many more!

I just wanted you to know that there are people who beat this disease, and prayers, laughter, and positive thinking by the patient and his/her loved ones do as much or more as traditional medical treatments in the healing process. So keep thinking good thoughts!

Bless you,

Pickles & Pantone

Cartoon

Vann follows several comic strips in the newspaper, and "Pickles" is one of his favorites because it often reminds him of me and him. I'll bet a few of your husbands could relate to this one. (Click on photo to enlarge.)

Image2 Pantone has announced it's color of the year; they call it "mimosa." Don't you just love it? I'd like to redo my who entire living room or maybe bedroom around this color. According to the Pantone site,
"Mimosa Embodies Hopefulness and Reassurance in a Climate of Change ." And with the economy in shambles and a new presidential administration moving into the White House, I guess a climate of change is just what's going on in this country. "The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation." So, let's paint the world MIMOSA!

Please note that things might look funny on Blackberry Creek for a while. I'm trying to learn to customize a design, and I have no clue what I'm doing. Please bear with me, and thanks for visiting.

Birds & Bees

Redbird jpg I have a friend. Her name is Kai. She lives in Houston, and she's Comanche. She made this beautiful cross-stitched piece for me and Vann. If you click on Kai's name anywhere in this paragraph, you'll be taken away to her blog where you can read more about this.

Part of my heritage is also Native American.

After seeing Kai's needlework this morning, I got to thinking about redbirds and how they keep showing up here at the Yellow House. I decided that the Redbird is our totem. I did a little bit of research and learned that in Native American tradition, the Totem is an animal spirit guide or other entity that looks after or protects a family, clan, or tribe.

Kai tells us that Cardinals form lifelong attachments to their mates. In other words they mate for life. Vann and I did that when we finally met. So it's settled then. The beautiful Red Cardinal is our totem, singing prayers to Heaven for us.

Thank you, dear Kai. Your work is gorgeous, as is your spirit.

Bee note And I also received this today from a friend in Georgia. I thought this was the cutest envelope. Y'all know how I love bees. I've always been drawn to bees because they make me think of quilting (quilting bee?) and they always look so happy, and they're always too busy (just like me). And they make honey, which is sweet and delicious. I think if I have a personal totem, just for me alone, it might be a bee.

Thank you, Nancy, for this lovely card and the sweet note. We appreciate your caring and all your cards so much.

The sun is shining here! After 3 3/4" of rain in 24 hours, the past two days have been gorgeous but cold.

Vann came though his Monday and Tuesday chemo pretty well. The treatment on Tuesday was long and arduous and brought back the nausea. But he's working through that better than he did with the last round.

I hope the first week of the new year was a good one for all of you. Happy Thursday to all.

Coffee & Fabric...

Coffe Fab ...The Last Socially Acceptable Addictions

I was reading Nicole's blog this morning about the coffee-themed novelty fabric that she purchased. It reminded me of this fabric I bought at Heart to Heart a while back. I had forgotten all about it, where I had put it, why I had bought it, or much of anything about it. So I went on a search of the sewing room and found it. The line is called "Spill the Beans" by Barbara Tourtillotte for Clothworks. I think I bought it because I like coffee and bright colors paired with black. But I don't know what I was going to make from it. Maybe I didn't have a plan. It was probably just one of those impulse buy.

I think I'll go have another cup of coffee.

Rainy Day Doodles

Snowflake The photo at left is in no way indicative of the weather here in Alabama. Not a snowflake in sight here. It's still raining. Buckets full. And that isn't even my quilt. Don't remember who made it; I took the photo at a quilt guild meeting. I do remember that it was an awesome quilt and we were all amazed at the quilter's skill and talent, whoever she was. (Click on the photo and enlarge it if you want to see how really intricate the piecing and quilting are.)

Before chemo yesterday, we met with Dr. L. He was well pleased with Vann's progress--the lack of pain and appetite return especially. He said that indicated that the chemo is working. (I thought to myself, "What it really indicates is that prayer is working." But we'll give the chemo some credit too. We just thank God that Vann is better. We go back for another treatment today, then no more for two weeks.

We met a lady yesterday who was also having chemo. She had her Bible and another book open on her lap and I recognized the Beth Moore design format of the second book. I commented to her that it was nice to meet another Beth student. (This woman even looked like Beth.) We had a nice talk about faith and promised to pray for each other. Her name is Sherry, if you'd like to pray for her too.
