Altered Playing Card #18/52

Suzie_card_2 This one is called "Suzie," because the little girl looks a lot like I did at that age. She came in the packet of goodies that Toni of Flea Market Studio sent me. Behind the little girl is a scrap of a paper napkin that I adhered to the card with Mod Podge. I used a pink marker to color her sash and sock ribbons.

Pampered Eggs

Eggs_finishedMy husband, Vann, will salivate when he sees this photo. He could eat deviled eggs till they were coming out his ears. He absolutely loves them.

Deviled eggs are also a staple at Leeds First United Methodist Church luncheons and dinners. My Aunt E. frequently asks me to make them for various church functions.

So what's my point? My point is that I despise making deviled eggs. I'd rather clean toilets or iron blue jeans, I think. First you put the eggs in a pan and boil them. So far, it sounds pretty easy, but wait. After they're boiled, you have to peel them. Peeling boiled eggs is a pain as (at lest for me) the shells frequently stick to the whites and and I come out with an egg that looks like a rat gnawed it. So I always have to boil more than I need, at least if they're for church or company. If they're for Vann or the family, I let them wonder about the gnawing.
Egg_yolks
Now it gets easy again: Slice the eggs in half lengthwise, tump the yolks out into a bowl and, setting the whites aside, mash the yolks up (I use a fork). Then add a little mayo, a little mustard (brown or yellow) and a dash or two of garlic salt (or plain salt if you don't like garlic). You can also add black pepper, but I don't. It makes the eggs look like they have dirt in them, and anybody who wants black pepper can always add that before eating.

I don't know how much mustard and mayo I add since I don't measure. I'd say about two  tablespoons of mustard for a dozen eggs and enough mayonnaise to bring the mixture to a texture of cake icing. Stir it all up really good.

Now it gets hard again, really hard. Getting the yolk mixture into the egg white halves has, in the past, defied my kitchen skills. To say I make a mess would be a mega-understatement. And since I get more egg yolk on me and the kitchen than in the halves, I never have enough yolk to fill all the halves, and some of them are very skimpy looking. I've used teaspoons, butter knives, my hands, everything I can think of to accomplish this step and have produced messes with each and every one. One time, I decided to make a funnel out of wax paper and use that to fill the eggs. BIG mistake. I'm still scraping dried egg yolk off my kitchen surfaces from that fiasco. Stuffing eggs has always been something I looked forward to about as much as monthly cramps.

Eggs_decorator_2 UNTIL I FOUND THIS! It's a Pampered Chef Easy Decorator, made for decorating cakes. When I saw it at the PC party which I attended a couple of months ago, I thought of deviled eggs and how it just might make making them easier. It does. I just spoon the egg yolk mixture into the decorating tube, then pipe it into the egg white halves. Squirt, squirt, squirt. Now my deviled eggs not only taste great, they look pretty good too. There's more than enough yolk mixture to fill all the egg halves, and my kitchen isn't smeared with yellow egg yolk.

Now if somebody can tell me how to make the egg peeling step a little less maddening, deviled eggs might become a weekly dish around my house.

I can help with the sticking!! Follow these instructions and you will have perfectly cook hard boiled eggs that come out of the shell easily.....Also - you know that greenish gray color that is on the outside of the hard boiled yolk? This recipe stops that from happening too.

Place eggs in a pan of cold water. Do NOT cover. Place on burner on high. As SOON as they come to a FULL boil, remove from heat and cover. Let sit for 10 minutes. Then immediately drain the eggs and put in a pan with COLD WATER AND ICE. Let set until cool (leave in water and put in fridge if you are not going to peel them right away. When cool (bout 10 minutes) Roll the egg between your palm and the kitchen counter, gently - but with enough pressure to crack the shell. Peel under running cold water...The shell should come off easily...

Hope that helps! Oh and if you are ever without your cake decorator, you can put the deviled egg mixture in a plastic baggie, snip one corner and pipe it out of the bag that way :-).
Hugs,
Penny

What a great idea! We have one of those. I never thought of using it for deviled eggs. Yum...those eggs look good! I always look forward to them at potlucks.

On 04/30/2008, Patti said ...

Years ago someone told me to use my cookie press with a small tip to fill deviled eggs - like your gadget, it worked like a charm!

I have one thing to add to Penny's instructions that will help with the egg shells. Don't use really fresh eggs - they almost always cause sticking shells. If I'm going to be boiling eggs I make sure I buy them at least 5 days before I'm going to cook them. Don't know why it matters, but it does.

About the pepper - if people want pepper just get yourself some white pepper. When my mother made white sauce it always had black specks. As a new wife I had to check recipes as I'd not had time to learn much at home due to school. The white sauce recipe said to use white pepper. So I bought some - great stuff when you want to pepper something light colored and you don't want black specks.

In addition to the instructions above, I poke a pin sized hole in the end first. (Out of 2 dozen - I only had 1 leak.)

On 04/30/2008, Beverly said ...

I use the same method Penny described, and additionally, I also stand by what Patti posted.

I use white pepper for almost everything. It is very finely ground, and has a bit of a different flavor than black pepper.

I make my eggs using the same ingredients you use. Some people around here put pickle relish in their deviled eggs, but I don't really like them that way.

I have a very good friend from Cuba, and she adds a can of deviled ham to her deviled eggs. I've had her eggs on many occasions, and they are quite delicious with a bit of a twist.

And, now I am going to sit here at work the rest of the afternoon wanting a deviled egg.

I tried to comment yesterday but don't think it went through. I also tried to email you and it didn't either. Drat. Anyway...

I LOVELOVELOVE deviled eggs but hate to make them too! I do know that using old eggs makes it easier to peel them, I think because some of the liquid inside them evaporates so it isn't as close to the wall of the egg. I usually wait til they're nearly or just expired. Of course, with Ryan eating 5 fried eggs every day this has become difficult. Since I just bought 36 eggs maybe I can make some in a few weeks if I hide them in the back of the fridge.lol

I used to have a PC cake decorator til I loaned it to a friend. She returned parts of it but never did come up with the whole thing. Most times I use a ziplock baggie to fill mine and add cumin, garlic powder, relish, and finely chopped onions(if I'm feeling generous and have time) to my mix. Ryan, who loves plain boiled eggs, can't stand them but the rest of us will inhale them within an hour!

On 04/30/2008, anita said ...

The eggs have to be old to peel decently. (I tried making deviled eggs with fresh eggs—i.e., that day's—and they tasted great, but looked awful.) I usually stick a dozen in the back of the refrigerator for a week or two before I make them.

On 04/30/2008, sherry said ...

Yummy! Those deviled eggs look good. Like mentioned above, I've read & first hand experienced that the not real fresh (but of course not expired) eggs work best for removing the shell.

On 04/30/2008, Debbie said ...

What can I say...I agree with the ice trick, always works for me. As for the ingredients, I add chopped green onions...I love green onions (of course some people don't...my son!).

On 04/30/2008, Nicole said ...

Anita is right. You won't have sticky shells if you use eggs that are older. Works for me every time. New eggs? Forget it. They will stick and be a big ole mess.

On 04/30/2008, Jill said ...

I agree with the first directions, but would offer additional advice. Make sure you get the shell cracked all over when you roll it around and begin removing the shell from the end with the air bubble. This should be the less pointy end, I think, though I've never paid close attention to that for sure. I kind of feel with my fingers for the air pocket and if you start the peeling from there and make sure you get the membrane under the shell going with it, it makes it go pretty easily. I didn't know about the older egg thing, but as I don't use up my eggs right away when I buy them, mine are probably never newly bought anyway.

The Reason and The Season

X_crewel_2This beautiful crewel piece got left out of my treasure pix. I got it at the Humane Society thrift store in PC last week. I love the seagull and sentiment: There's a Reason to Life. Sometimes we forget that in the rushrushrush of everyday life.

Today I'll remember the
raison d'etre as I take care of all the chores that have to be done through the pain and fatigue that have come home to roost, perhaps caused by the change in weather.

We are in the midst of
"Blackberry Winter" here, and the temps have turned quite chilly. This has always been one of my favorite times of year. It happens while the blackberry's are in bloom--a few days of really chilly, but sunny, weather just after we think Spring has come to stay. Local myth says that if we have a year with no blackberry winter, the blackberry harvest will be meager.

Below is another treasure that came my way this week, and I wasn't even seeking it. Our friend, John H., phoned us a couple of nights ago and asked if he could come by. Of course, we said he could. He brought me this most excellent sewing basket that had belonged to his Aunt Penny H., who was my science teacher in junior high school, and who sits in front of me at church these days. (She's still a pretty redhead.) Somebody was cleaning out somebody else's house (where quilting bees used to be held to stitch quilts for the needy) over off Markeeta Road and was about to throw the basket away.  John rescued it and brought it to me. It's filled with 6" squares of 100% wood (edit: oops! make that WOOL) fabrics cut, I suspect, from used clothing. Some of the squares are already sewn together. I can see a lovely vest made from them, perhaps felted first. What do you think I should do with these squares?

Love the wool squares. A wool throw would be fabulous. With fringe at both ends, and maybe a sheer wool or crepe backing, tied or tacked at the corner of each square. Excuse me! My imagination just took off.

On 04/29/2008, Molly said ...

Well, if you can't find anything to do with them you can send them my way!LOL What a FIND, I love that basket too!!! The colors in that crewel piece are just wonderful.

We have blackberries on our driveway(and I do mean a HUGE mass of berry vines). It has been a few years since we've actually had berries, due to the drought we had flowers but no berries. There were 16 black the other day and many more red and green. I checked this morning and something has eaten the black ones, probably my red-headed child. She does things like that.

Hope you feel better soon. Living with chronic pain of any kind is NOT FUN, I'm finding. My stupid hip(bursitis) has hurt me for months now. Grrr. It won't be long til you are wishing for the ceiling fan to be on "high" and a glass of cherry lemonade!

Treasure Hunt: Part Two

A_2_flower_pics

The day we left for our beach vacation, even before we got out of town, I discovered a local yard sale. It was being held in the yard of a house that I have always admired, so I had to stop and seek treasure.

Then a week later, on our way home from the beach, we stopped at a flea market mall in Florala, Alabama. Didn't have long to browse, but I found some goodies. The pictures (above and below) are of treasures found at these two places.

******I'm going to do my best to stay away from yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores, and such for a while. I think I've overdone thrifting just a little lately. If that's possible.

And as long as I have blogging friends who are so generous, I might not need to go shopping for goodies anyway. Below are some treasures from a couple of my favorite bloggers. If you haven't visited them, I suggest you do so. They are both great bloggers and awesome artists, although you'll find their art styles very different. Lilia at Flea Market Studio has a soft, romantic, nostalgic style, while Rice at Voodoo Cafe has a fun, funky style--and she's funny.

The first three photos show ephemera and other doo-dads that Lilia sent me. The pink laces and trims are what she calls her "tattered fabric" pieces. She dyes vintage lace and trims pink, then overdyes them with tea.

The last photo  is of a group of rubber stamps that I won in Rice's recent blog giveaway drawing.  She mounted some of them herself.

Today, our Piecemaker's Quilting Bee group held our second Sew Fun day at the local library. There were five of us this time. I forgot to take my camera, so I don't have any pictures of that to share. I worked on my "Hearts Dot Com" blocks. I'm slowly becoming aware that I must like hearts very much. If I look around my house, I find them everywhere; but I never really realized that I had an especial fondness for hearts, but I guess I do.

Treasure Hunt: Part One

A_pillowcase_2 I have so much show-and-tell from our vacation, so I better get started.

I didn't really know where to start, so I just picked a place--the Humane Society Thrift Store on 23rd St. in Panama City. We had just visited the Goodwill Store on the same street and didn't find anything that interested us. But the Humane Society store had lots of treasures. I got this pair of hand-embroidered pillowcases for $2.

***********************************************************************************************************

A_crochet_hook And this ivory crochet hook, along with two steel hooks, cost me 50 cents.

The sweet little kitty picture below was $1.

A_sheet

The colorful sheet above set me back a buck. I learned from reading Autum's Creative Little Daisy blog what wonderful things can be done with sheets. She makes gorgeous lounge pants from them. I'm thinking of a table cover for my crafting table as a use for this one.

A_pillow_kit This unopened trapunto pillow kit was $2, as you can see. I don't especially like doing trapunto, but this was too pretty to pass up.

And lastly (which I don't think is a real word), I just had to have the great candle holder below. It's hand carved. I didn't have a candle for it at the beach, but I wanted to photograph it beside Kim's wonderful bird lamp.

A_candle_holder

Quite a haul, huh? That's all for now. Got to get back to the laundry room. We created a pile of dirty clothes last week.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity Jig

Cropped We got home a couple of hours ago. As you can see, Sophie is beside herself. It took Vann at least five minutes to get her to stop running around in circles so her could pick her up and love on her. Oh man! There's nothing like a big old sloppy happy dog kiss.

We're unpacked and Sophie and Vann are riding around the neighborhood on their 4-wheeler checking out things. We had a wonderful week. I think we both agree that it was the best beach trip yet. We loved the coolish temps and the lack of people on the beach. The sunsets were amazing too. And it was just nice for just the two of us to be together for a whole week. That never happens at home. One or the other of us is going here and there, doing whatever needs doing. We needed some together times. But it's good to be back home too.

I promise to get you up to date on all we did and saw and ate and read. I have so many treasures to show you, and starting tomorrow, I'll do just that. But now, I think I'll go get reacquainted with my big chair.

Mcguffey All right, I will show you one thing. I dropped a hint a few days ago about a great gift that my mother-in-law gave me. Here's the gift in the picture at right: A set of McGuffey's Readers, Books 1-6, 1907 editions. ( Correction added: The books are 1920 editions, not 1907.) (Click on picture for larger view.) I've always wanted a set of these books, and I didn't even know Miss Biddy had them. I believe there's another book, Book 7, that goes with the series. If so, Vann says Miss B probably has it somewhere around her house. If she doesn't, I'm going to look for it on E-bay.

The illustrations in the books are wonderful.

So tonight, I'm going to retire to my big chair and get lost in the world of McGuffey's Readers.

Visiting Family

We left the condo this morning at 7:30 and drove to Camilla, Georgia to visit with Vann's mom and dad. We thought, for some unknown reason, that it would be no more than a two-hour drive to Camilla from Panama City. Well, double that and you'll have it. We spent a total of about eight hours traveling and about three hours with the folks. But it was good to see them for even that little while. Poor Vann is exhausted, as he drove all the way.

Miss Biddy (Vann's mom) gave me an awesome surprise while we were there. I won't tell you what it is. You have to wait till I show pictures (see below for why I'm not showing photos now).

In fact, I have a lot of neat stuff to show you--treasures found at Quilting By the Bay and at the thrift stores we found yesterday as well as a wonderful and unusual house we saw today on the way to Camilla. I bet you've never seen one like it. But it's too much trouble to download photos here, so I'm going to wait until I get home to do my photo show and tell.

Only two more days, and we leave on Friday. We still have lots of books to read, so tomorrow will probably be a quiet day.

Sounds as if you are enjoying your vacation Susan! I can't wait to hear more about the quilt shops and thrift shops. If you are like me, be prepared to be completely exhausted when you get home. I tell you, all I want to do is crawl into bed with a couple of good books and get up some time on Sunday.

Quick Report

We're going to the quilt shop today. And I just looked in the phone book and they have a bookoodle (I think that's a derivation of the French beaucoup) of thrift stores in PC. Maybe we'll be in the vicinity of one or two of them on our way to the quilt shop. More Later.

Resting, Relaxing, and Reading

Umbrellas_jpgHave we ever been scarfing up those three Rs since arriving here at Panama City Beach on Friday evening. We got here just in time to watch the sun ease down into the Gulf of Mexico. After a soup-and-sandwich supper, we got right down to working on the contents of the huge book bag we brought. I've finished one book, and Vann is halfway through one. (I had a head start, since I started mine at home.)

The weather is perfect: sunny and cool with a breeze off the gulf. Yesterday, the waves were really high, but today the water is very calm. Hardly anybody on the beach, even though we're in the weekend. We have a feeling, the beach will really be deserted after today. We've decided this is the time to be at the beach. I guess if you like crowds and heat, you wouldn't like it. But for us, it's perfect.

If anybody is wondering about Miss Sophie Belle Patterpaw, we didn't bring her. There's a dog ban on PC Beach, although we've seen several since we've been here. But there's a $500 fine if you're caught, and $500 will buy a lot of gas for the 4-wheeler. So we left the mutt at home.

But don't go feeling sorry for her. She's having a ball. Andy (our daughter) is staying at our house this weekend to keep her company. Andy took Sophie for a hike in the woods yesterday. Then Bob came and gave her a ride on the 4-wheeler and took her home with him to visit with him and Mary Beth. This afternoon, Paul will take over from Andy as dog sitter. Sophie will be staying with him for the rest of the week. Paul is crazy about that dog, and she about him. So you see, the black dog is feeling no pain.

The internet connection down here is slow, and my hands aren't accustomed to working on Vann's laptop. So if I'm not answering your commments or leaving comments on your blogs as much or as fast as usual, don't worry. I'll be back to full blogging speed once I get home.

We have a trip to Quilting By the Bay planned for later this week. Can't wait to see what new goodies they have since our last visit. I'll file a full report.

Gotta go now. Got books to read, naps to take, beach to walk, and shrimp to eat. Hope all is well with everyone.

Altered Card #17/52

Card_17I  decided to do card #17 before we go to the beach tomorrow so I won't be behind when we return on the 25th.

It's entitled "Geranium" although I'm not sure that's what those flowers are supposed to be. But the colors are right for Geraniums. I got this tiny little painting (and another just like it) at an estate sale a couple of years ago. It's acrylic paint on yellow gingham cloth.

Everyone have a great week. Vann is taking his laptop, so I'll check in from the beach.

"Ellen, I AM Heathcliff"

According to one of those online test thingies (which you can take yourself by clicking on the link below the movie poster) I am "Wuthering Heights." I'm tickled. It's one of my favorite movies (and books), and I was so afraid I'd turn out to be "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World." And don't you think I look just a little like Merle Oberon? No? Then maybe Laurence Olivier?

Note: I have satisfied my "main passion in life." I found true love already. Thank goodness mine and Vann's story turned out more happily than did Heathcliff and Cathy's.
Excuse me now. I have to go roam the moors in the rain for a little while and catch my death of pneumonia.

Thrift Store Treasures

Rabbit_pillow_2

Yesterday was such a busy day. Haircut and color, pedicure, prom chores with Jesse, cooking, laundry. But even before all that, I made a thrift store run, ostensibly to deliver several boxes and bags of donations from my office/art room. But I had a few minutes, so I did a quick run through to make sure I wasn't missing any treasures. And, sure enough, I would have missed several had I not run the isles.

Just look at this wonderful cross-stitched rabbit pillow. Now you kRose_pillow_shamnow how I love rabbits. With eyelet lace ruffle, no less.

And what about the rose and ticking pillow shams or pillow cases? I'm not sure which it's supposed to be, could be either. They fit king-size pillows. But have you ever seen pillow shams or pillow cases that were open at both ends? I haven't, but these are. I think I'll stitch up one end like a normal pillow case.

Finally, I found this oil painting.  Not sure yet where it will hang.
Red_barn
I can't remember exactly what I spent, but it was under $20 for everything.

The girls who clean my house every two weeks just finished up. Now for the first time in many months, my whole house is clean and neat--well, everything except for the sewing room, that is. And with the door closed, one doesn't notice that room. The great sewing room reorganization is going to have to wait until we return from our beach trip. We're leaving Friday, and I have lots to do before I can leave. But like Mama used to say about dirty dishes, it'll be there when I get back. (Or was that me who said that? I think Mama said, "Suzie, do the dishes.")

Hope everyone is having a good week. The weather here is near perfect, dry and cool and sunny, and very, very green.

Great finds!! I don't do a lot of shopping in thrift stores but it seems there are some wonderful things to be found in them. I must give it a go one day. I can't imagine someone would go to all that work to make such a pretty little bunny pillow and then put it in a thrift store. Good to see that it now has a loving home :)))

Altered Playing Card #16/52

Kiss_cardThe image of the two little girls kissing came out of a Dover book of Victorian clip art. It's a little freaky, but then it was a freaky time (the Victorian Era, I mean).

I did something in the background with a green marker that didn't turn out well, so that's why all the silk flowers got bradded on--to cover up the boo boo.

The Fibro Monster is back--well, actually he has been coming and going for several days now. I'll have bad day, then a good day, then another bad one. Never know what to expect, just like the weather, which I believe has a lot to do with the Fibro Monster's schedule.  Yesterday we had rain, sleet, and hail. Yes we did.

I'm scheduled to go to Kut Ups this afternoon for a cut and color and then with Jesse to The Pants Store to get him fitted for a tux for his prom. Maybe one more cup of coffee will do the trick.

At least we don't have to worry about this being tax deadline day. We did that weeks ago. Hope none of you are laboring over a Form 1040 today.

I have really enjoyed all of your ATCs, and this one is not exception. The Victorian image is adorable, and I totally agree that era included more than its share of weirdness.

Be sure to spray yourself with Fibro Monster repellent. Spray good now, be sure not to miss any spots.

Some of the Guys

Reed_2
There isn't much to talk about today. I don't know where the time has gone. I did a little laundry, then went grocery shopping, then did a little more laundry, and the day is gone.

So instead of showing you stacks of laundry, or bags of groceries, or what I cooked for lunch (astronaut chicken w/jasmine rice and mushrooms and baby brussells sprouts), I'll just show some photos of some of my favorite guys. The first is my great nephew (grand nephew? not sure which is correct). Anyway this is Reed, my niece Buffy's little boy. He looks like a porcelain figurine, he's so beautiful. But don't let the looks fool you; he's all boy--a handful of boy, according to his mommy. Some of his favorite activities are singing, dancing, playing the piano, and vacuuming

Here are Reed's daddy Jason (below) and his brothers Kane (top)  and Jude (bottom).

I Love the Smell of Endust in the Morning

BookshelvesThis is the neatest these bookshelves have been in a couple of years. They're organized and dusted, and all the clutter that previously filled them has been put in the trash can where it belongs. Although they're of little use now, I don't have the heart to get rid of the set of World Book Encyclopedia on the bottom shelf, circa about 1972 BC (before computers). I asked Caitlin did she want them, and she said she did--wants them to stay here, I think is what she meant.
Vann built the bookcases for me many years ago, before we were married. He does beautiful woodwork.

Desk

My desk is straightened up too, again for the first time in a while. It's a pleasure to work in a space that isn't full of garbage and clutter. I just hope I can keep it this way.

We went to church this morning, then to lunch at El Cazador with Lori. The weather has turned chilly again. The weather people are even talking about snow flurried tonight or tomorrow, but I don't much believe that. It isn't that cold--at least not yet.

Paulie (across the street) is worried about his newly planted tomato plants. I say anybody who plants tomatoes in north Alabama in April shouldn't be surprised if they get nipped in the bud by a spring freeze. That's not to say I'll be happy about it. Paul supplied us with lots of delicious tomatoes last summer. I'd like a repeat this year, so I'm hoping for no bud nipping tonight.

Since this room is neatened up and dusted, it's time to start on the sewing room. But I'm going to take this afternoon as a day of rest and start tomorrow. I think the cleaning and organizing will go faster in that room, because it isn't such a mess to start with--or at least it wasn't until I started moving things all around to make room for Jesse to move the old chest out. Now this is what it looks like.
