Dress Progress

DSC_0061

Skipper and I spent a bunch of time in the sewing room today, and I made lots of progress on the dress quilt.

The dress is almost finished. I’ll be scattering a few more flowers around. Then all I’ll have to do is create her face and hat and give her some legs and maybe shoes. Then she’ll be ready to fuse, cut out, and attach to the background.

This looks great!

There is a Laura Heine class at my local quilt store. I didn’t realize it’s mostly fussy cutting and fusing. I may need to try one.

The Scream

MU1091-1000x1000

I’m sure most of you are familiar with Edvard Munch’s painting “The Scream” (above). And, like me, you might have seen parodies of this piece. Well I saw one this week in a local doctor’s office that is my all-time favorite “Scream” parody (below).

Scream2

I question why a medical doctor, especially a podiatrist, would choose to hang such a work in his office, but there it is. And I love it so much, I’m putting it in my idea file to perhaps parody my own self someday into a quilt.

I've always found The Scream by Edvard Munch upsetting as it seems so fearful but I do love Lucy's Scream as that's something I can relate to. Do love your current photo from childhood as I can relate to that, too! :)

In the doctor's office perhaps Lucy's scream helps relax the older patients as they wait?!

Skirting the Issue

DSC_0055

I finally got the hang, more or less, of working with Steam-a-Seam 2, and I’ve made lots of progress on the pink skirt for my quilt “The Dress.” (That’s a working title, by the way. I’ll probably come up with another title when I’m closer to the finish. I don’t want it to be named the same as Laura Heine’s pattern.)

I think I still prefer working with Wonder Under instead of Steam-a-Seam, even though I have enjoyed being able to stick the appliqué pieces to the foundation temporarily and adjust their placement when necessary. But I haven’t been able to solve the problem of the difficulty and peeling off the paper--as well as the sticky fingers and gummy scissor blades.

In answer to your question, Barbara, I suppose I could have switched to Wonder Under, but I had already purchased a huge roll of the Steam-a-Seam (and it ain’t cheap), so I was determined to use it.

One thing about Laura’s instructions still bothers me. She doesn’t blanket stitch or zigzag or do any kind of stitching around each of her appliqué pieces. She just fuses it all down, cuts out the girl, and glues is to her background using fabric glue. Then she quilts over the whole thing and she’s done. Not stitching those pieces down makes me a little nervous. I might do some kind of stitching on mine, even if it’s just a straight stitch.

Still rainy weather here. The Little Cahaba River, which runs through Leeds and is more of a creek than a river, had topped it’s banks yesterday. If this weather keeps up, we’re going to have some serious flooding. But The Yellow House is on high ground, so we should stay dry. I just worry about people who aren’t so lucky.

$_35 But it is perfect weather to camp out on the couch with Skipper, a cup of tea, and a good book, which is what I’m going to do for the rest of the afternoon. I’m reading Where the Crawdads Sing. It’s a good book, but I’m not sure it measures up to all the hype that I read in reviews before I started reading it.

Cheerio, eveyone. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.

What a cute skirt you've created from your chosen fabrics! Have fun with the rest of her outfit!!

I admire your determination to carry on with the Steam-a seam and hope it plays nicely with you.

Marvelous that your home is on a hill and it's good ours is, too, as it's still raining here. Glub, glub.

Oh, and please check your email. :)

Sticky and Wet With Clean Floors

DSC_0053In three days of work, I’ve got not even half the ruffles temporarily attached to the skirt. Wonder why? Read on.

If I ever finish this quilt, I’ll never use Steam a Seam 2 again--and probably any Steam a Seam product. I have been doing fused appliqué for decades. I love doing it. It’s easy and fun--sort of like working a puzzle. But Steam a Seam 2 has turned out to be one of those 2000-piece puzzles that are all one color. It’s driving me crazy.

In three days I’ve been able to accomplish this much on the skirt. But the process has involved moaning, groaning, and much foul language. I’ve had to cut several pieces twice, having fused the wrong side of the fusible to the ruffle piece.

You would think there wouldn’t be that much difference in this project and the ones I’m used to (Wonder Under, etc.) At first glance the main difference is that Steam a Seam 2 has paper on both sides of the fusible, where Wonder Under and others have paper on only one side. Right off the bat that confuses me about which side to trace and which side for fuse. I think I finally have it worked out, but I’ll probably forget by the time I start back working on the quilt.

In addition, the paper is not easily pealed without getting sticky stuff all over one’s fingers. Not to mention one’s new, pricey Karen Kay Buckley scissors.

I think all the convenience of being able to attach the pieces temporarily until they’re fused with the iron is offset by the confusion and mess. But I will press on and finish this quilt and never go near Steam a Steam again.

I ordered background and border fabric for “The Dress” from fabric.com, and it came in today (photo above). I love it. I believe, in spite of the nightmare I’m having with the fusible, I’ll be hugely please with the finished product, once I ever get a finished product.

Roomba Report

I am delighted to report that I couldn’t be happier with my Roomba. I could kick myself for not getting it sooner. My floors have never been so clean. I sit and watch the little black disc zoom around my house picking up dirt, dust, pet hair, and what have you. And when he’s finished, I don’t have to take three Ibuprofen and lie down for the rest of the day.

Jesse has named the Roomba Alfred after Batman’s butler. I like that, but I tend to call him Fredo after the Corleone brother in “The Godfather.”  As I watch that mindless machine clean my floor, I think of Fredo saying, “I can handle things. I’m smart. Not like everybody says. Not dumb. I’m smart, and I want respect.” You got it, Fredo.

Weather Report

Our trusty local weather guru, James Spann, tells us we’re in for a gullywasher during the next few days: The potential exists for a total of 12 inches of rainfall in coming days. That means flooding is likely in many areas.

Hi Susan, I'm laughing when I read how you are not having a good relationship with SaS2 - not laughing because you are having a hard time - but that I feel the same way about WonderUnder and absolute LOVE SaS2. Different strokes, right? I always wondered about getting a Roomba. But, my Pekingese Lilly will probably want to fight it - LOL

Can you switch to using Wonder Under for the rest of the Dress project?

Qw live in a tri-level house so wonder if Roomba would fall down stairs? Will have to look into getting one.

Am glad your home is on a hill!

Playing With Pinks

DSC_0041
I had some fun yesterday perusing my stash for fabrics to create “The Dress.”

I also tried out Laura Heine’s technique for fusing, didn’t like it, so I think I’m going to go with what I know. I have never used Steam-a-Seam, which is a little different from the fusibles I’m familiar with in that after you peal the paper away, you can stick the piece to the background temporarily until you iron it down permanently. This is a handy feature since it lets you move things around a bit until you get them just right.

Anyway, my plan was to skip church this morning (I know: bad girl) and work on the quilt some more. But my pain level is such this morning that I might just skip church and go back to bed. Maybe the gloomy weather has something to do with it. We haven’t had enough sunshine this winter to fit in a thimble, it seems. Always raining, foggy, or just dark and gloomy, which it is this morning. That kind of weather normally doesn’t bother me mentally. In fact, I like the cozy feeling of a rainy day. But maybe my physical body doesn’t like it so much.

It’s Not That I’m Lazy

But the last time I vacuumed, I told myself, “Self,” I said, “you can’t do that anymore.” So I sat down right then and ordered a new toy.

General-l

I’ve been considering getting a Roomba for a couple of years. (Nobody would call me an impulse shopper.) I talked to friends and family who have them, and Jesse and I both have been doing internet research. Finally I bit the bullet and ordered it. It just came in, and Jesse is even now getting it set up and charged. The above photo is a stock photo from the internet. After we get it going, I’ll post a photo of one of the cats riding it. “Yeah, sure,” says Bella.

I look forward to seeing your progress on The Dress and the fabrics you choose for it. I've never used Steam A Seam either.

Hope the Roomba does all you need it to and that it doesn't make the cats head for the hills. :)

Sorry you feels so bad today and hope you feel lots better soon.

Hugs!

I'm in exactly the same position. Either I hire a stranger to clean my house in my new community or go for the Roomba. Vacuuming one room a day just doesn't cut it. Let us know how your Roomba works out. Glad you feel good enough to start new sewing projects, and an occasional bad day - unh!!

What fusible do you use? I’ve thought of a Roomba for awhile, too.

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling

DSC_0022Cutting is very hard for me as I can be on my feet for only a short time before the back pains gets intolerable. And I just simply have not been able to get the hang of cutting while sitting. But I did get three more blocks cut out for Crown of Thorns, plus some sashing strips.

I have made what feels like some significant progress already today. I got several more blocks cut out for my Crown of Thorns quilt, got both “Witch Hunt” and “The Bow Wow Bunch” trimmed and ready for binding, got binding cut for “Witch Hunt,” and ordered a Roomba.

I keep falling farther and farther behind on this vacuuming deal. It takes me days to do the entire downstairs (Jesse takes care of upstairs, except for sewing room), and before I can get it all done, the dust, dirt, and pet hair are nipping at my heels. It was either hire a full-time vacuumer, or get the Roomba. My sister has one as do many of my friends. And most of them love it.

DSC_0033“Bow Wow Bunch" ready for binding

One more task today: I promised Jesse beef stew for supper tonight. So here I go to get it stewing. Then I think I’ll start a new book as soon as I decide what I want to read next.

Well done in getting the strips cut for the Crown of Thorns blocks, and trimming both Witch Hunt and Bow Wow Bunch as well as getting that binding made. Progress, girlfriend, so give yourself credit!

Hope the beef stew went in the Crock Bot so you could sit while it cooked. Your home must have smelled divine while it cooked, too!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Sabbath Sunday

C3

A most inspirational and enjoyable church service this morning at Leeds Presbyterian. We gained one new member, installed three elders, listened to passages from my two favorite Bible books (James and Matthew) enjoyed inspirational choir offerings, celebrated Holy Communion, and then, the piece de resistance! A covered-dish lunch as only church folks can do it. I’ve never been to a church covered-dish that that wasn’t amazing.

C1 (1)

Leeds Presbyterian is a very small church. I think that’s one reason I like it so much. We’re so small, in fact, that we can’t afford a full-time pastor. Instead we have a visiting preacher each Sunday. In the photo above, this Sunday’s preacher, Richard, speaks with our new member, Vern, before having lunch.

After communion, we sang one of my all-time favorite hymns, “Here I Am, Lord.” That one really touches my heart and makes me want to do better.

The activities sort of wore me out, so I’m going to spend the afternoon on the couch with Skipper reading. I hope you all have had as great a Sabbath as mine, no matter how you spent it.

It sounds like a perfect Sunday service with dinner to follow, dinner on the grounds and/or a pot luck dinner. All sound lovely.

I, too, love the song "Here Am I, Lord".

"Blessed be the ties that bind our hearts in Christian love .."

Grace and peace, my friend, and hugs!

Sounds as though you had a wonderful Sunday. We'll have a pot luck dinner next Sunday after the morning service. Love pot luck dinners! We, too, belong to a small church and sing the old hymns that I grew up with. We do have a full time pastor, and he brings such wonderful, practical messages. Always look forward to Sundays.

Sounds like a wonderful day!! We all like good food, so that is a plus too. I assume you left your Methodist Church? I am Methodist & we are in a big financial undertaking, 7.5 million! I don’t know exactly how this will be accomplished but.......maybe it will happen!! Cannot wait to see your finished dress quilt. Also you are making me a bit envious in the new vacuum!!
I love seeing your projects, now to get mine done!!
Quilt on!!

What’s for Lunch?

DSC_0020

About the only vegetables that Jesse will eat are green beans, corn, and cabbage. So today I cooked skillet of cabbage. The way I make it is easy, and so good. Fry a few strips of cut-up bacon (don’t drain), than add chopped cabbage to pan. Saute till tender. You can also add a little water or chicken stock during cooking. If so, cook it down till all liquid is gone.

I also made meat loaf and mac and cheese. Jesse is leaving for a week or so of hiking on Wednesday, and I want to get him good and fed before he has to spend all that time eating ramen noodles and pop tarts.

I spent a little time in the sewing room this morning and got some more of the squares for my Crown of Thorns quilt cut out. Still have lots to go though.

All the supplies have come in for The Dress quilt. I want to get all the cutting done for Crown of Thorns before I start on The Dress. Hoping that will be later this week or early next.

Hope you have some fun plans lined up for the time Jesse is out of town.

October Song

DSC_0016

“October Song:” that’s the title I’ve decided on for my mini quilt that I will donate to this year’s guild silent auction for charity. I got the borders on this morning, so now it’s ready for quilting. I still haven’t decided whether I’m going to attempt to machine quilt it, or hand quilt it, or take it to Lena. As I’ve said, I’m not very good at machine quilting. And the arthritis and carpel tunnel in both my hands make hand quilting difficult. So it could be that it will just go to Lena.

I spent quite a while in the sewing room today. Skipper was extra good and didn’t start barking until we’d been there for a couple of hours. With frequent breaks to rest and pamper my back, the spoon supply held up pretty well. In addition to bordering the little quilt, I got some decluttering done. Not enough by any means, but I can tell that things a lot neater. I filled two garbage bags with throwaway stuff and two large totes with giveaway stuff.

The pattern came in for “The Dress” quilt. And I’ve already started pulling fabrics from my stash. The dress is going to be shades of pink in my version. I’m thinking of either a black-and-white background or cream. I’ll probably wait until the dress is completed and then audition it against fabric combination to see which I like.

Skipper is so happy to have me downstairs. I gave him half a graham cracker as reward to being so good and letting me work in the sewing room. Then he climbed up beside me on the couch and went to sleep. I’m going to enjoy the snuggle and read for a while.

October Song is a delightful title for this charming October quilt. Some lucky someone will be overjoyed to win it at the auction.

I've seen rabbits on several quilting blogs to indicate jumping (or hopping) from project to project. Count me in as that's my all too frequent habit.
