Been Binding

Binding copy

I hate binding large quilts. And the Country Girl Sampler is really really big--something like 88" x 100". I haven't made a quilt that big in a long time.

Well I cut, stitched, and pressed the binding this morning and now have it attached to the front of the quilt--and my shoulders are killing me. Now all I have to do is hand-stitch the binding to the front, sew on the hanging sleeve and the label, and this quilt will be done. I love it, even though it is wonderfully large and hard to manipulate under the sewing machine.

Now that this Country Girl is almost finished, I'm looking forward to starting on Jesse's Morning Star. I have already been playing with the fabric and planning how many blocks and what size. This is going to be another big one to fit his queen-size bed and have plenty of side drop. Then I think I'll go back to smallies.

Binding2

By the by, I see with some sadness that my last post about Donald's Washington Monument drew some ire, and some readers vowed to never read my ravings again. That's ok. But I would like them to know, if they do happen to sneak back, that I am truly sorry if I hurt their feelings--execept for that woman who called the Women's Marchers vulgar. That got my own knickers in a knot. When someone who supports for president a maniac who brags about sexually assaulting women and explains that he's able to easily do it because he's a "star," and then calls millions of American marching for human rights (even her rights) vulgar, I'm simply nonplussed. And, fyi, not one arrest was made throughout the country, among all the millions of marchers. The only arrest in connection with the marches was a Trump supporter who spit on a marcher--or maybe he threw water on her. I don't remember which. But he was arrested.

To the others who said goodbye, if you'll come back, I'll try my very bestest to never utter Donald's name on this blog again. It's just as conditions grow more and more inhuman and dangerous, and our country and our world suffers, I have a hard time dealing. I've never been afraid to post any of my feelings here. My blog has always been one of my safe places. But I reiterate my apologies to the people whose feeling I hurt. That was not my intention.

Your blog is just that: yours. You are free to express your feelings and opinions here. If someone doesn't agree with you, that is their privilege but they don't have to read your blog. Continue to write whatever you want. It is helpful in these stressful times.
Your quilt is coming together beautifully. I never cared much for samplers, but this one I love for the colors, blocks and fabrics you chose. My favorite blocks are those you substituted for some in the original pattern.

You have absolutely no reason to apologize. For humor to be good, there has to be some amount of truth to it.

As to the Women's March being vulgar, I marched and it was beautiful. Sometimes to get people to listen to you, you just have to use their language. :-)

Bravo.... PLEASE keep speaking your mind/feelings. If more people had spoken up to Hitler who knows what would have happened. PLEASE DO NOT LET A FEW SILENCE YOU.

Unfortunately, in my humble opinion, we now have a crude bully for a president and that saddens me. Along with realizing how disrespectful he is towards those who disagree with him, as well as women and minorities, I never realized how mean-spirited and downright ugly his supporters are.

Hope their ugliness stays away from blogs such as yours. Remember unlike Russia you have a RIGHT to speak your mind.

A Grandson Quilt

Jesse needs a new quilt for his bed. He currently is using a big heavy denim comforter that isn’t very attractive. Now I know guys aren’t particularly hung up on attractive comforters, but I feel my boy needs a better looking cover on his bed. So I’m in the planning stages of making him one. I think he was about 11 or 12 the last time I made him a quilt. It was made for a twin-size bed (he now sleeps in a queen size) with a very juvenile theme. So it’s time to make him a new one.

15780920_827181987384805_6520532373753540954_n

This is the pattern I’m going to use for Jesse’s quilt. The pattern is called Morning Star. Here’s a link to instructions.
http://www.quilterscache.com/M/MorningStarQuilt.html

Bluebarnassorted

These are the fabrics I’ve ordered to make Jesse’s quilt, Blue Barn by Moda. I love the autumn look of the quilt in the above photo. But I’ve already made so many autumn themed quilts in the past few months, I wanted to do something different. Anyway, the blues and creams seam to fit Jesse’s personality more.

I can’t wait till the fabric gets here so I can get started. I think it’s going to be a lovely quilt--but not so lovely as to be girly.

***

Thanks to you who gave suggestions about the Schnibble star quilt. I’m taking all your suggestions under consideration, as well as a couple of ideas of my own. I’ll let you know when I decide how to fix the quilt.

***

Here ’tis: The quilt I made for Jesse when he was 12. It’s an I Spy design.

Border Befuddlement

Stars

The borders are on my newest Schnibble, but I’m not sure I’m happy. The cornerstones (squares in border corners) were supposed to be four patches like are in the center of the stars. I had those sewn on, but I didn’t like them. There was no contrast between them and the border strips. They really didn’t stand out unless you were very close to the quilt. So I decided that solid squares would be better. I cut the squares from the background (cream) fabric and sewed them on. And although there’s plenty of contrast this time, I’m not sure I like them. Maybe if I bind the quilt with a darker fabric, the cream squares might work. I don’t know. I’m just tired of working on it and thinking about it right now. Maybe tomorrow with a fresh eye, something will come to me.

Any suggestions?

1st: Lay the binding fabric so it peeks about 1/4" around two sides of the quilt. Like it? If so, done.

I'd suggest a darker fabric be used for the four corners - or small stars, diamond in a square or other simple block. Your choice!

Hugs!

On 01/25/2017, Jane said ...

The border rectangles introduce a new shape; the main quilt only has squares and half square triangles. I think the border fights with the center because of this. One thing that might work is to trim the border in half so that they appear as squares and have darker color for the corners. Just my suggestions.

Good luck, can't wait to see what you decide!

On 01/26/2017, Sherry said ...

How about using a 4 patch with low contrast, different from the inner border? I also noticed that 3 of 4 corners have a light and a dark next to them, but fourth has 2 mediums. Maybe this is causing the issue with choosing the corners. Also agreed with testing with binding fabric.

On 01/26/2017, Linda said ...

The border needs calming down a bit. Do you have more of the red fabric used in the star points of the top middle star? Plain squares of that in the corners would lend a strong, but calming, contrast, I believe. Could even bind with that. There is enough red used in the quilt that it would calmly contrast. Those are my 2 cents. :-)

On 01/26/2017, Sue, a Florida Farm Girl said ...

Unless you are just certain you want to use that piano key border, I'd ditch it and put on a border using a compatible print fabric.

Heading for the Border

Autumn Stars

All the star blocks are finished and put together. Now I'm working on the border. I did a little bit yesterday, but my hands were shaking so badly, I had to give it up. I hope they'll work a little better today.

Yesterday was a horrible day for our country. The only one I can think of that comes close is the day the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were attacked, 9/11. I'm afraid this one will turn out to have even more horrible and long lasting results. I envy people who can just pick up and move to a less dangerous place. I have too many roots and they go too deeply. God bless us all.

I agree. And I'm tired of hearing people say we should "get over it". The president of this country has committed crimes so horrible he should be spending his life in prison. Instead, so called "christians" and others have voted him into the highest office in the land. How did that happen? I can only take comfort in the fact that the majority of those who voted, voted for others. I know there are many out there who feel as I do. I have "unfriended" untold numbers on Facebook lately because of the hateful, unkind things they are saying. I cannot surround myself with "friends" like that. This is not about politics.

Schnibble Geese Done

Geese

I’ve been working on flying geese for the autumn schnibble quiltlet today. I have all the geese done and all the center four-patches for the blocks. Skipper informed me that was enough sewing and that I needed to come downstairs, give him a chew bone, then snuggle on the couch with him for a while. So that’s what I’m doing.

I love this method of making flying geese. It’s the same one that I used for the Bonnie Hunter Turkey Talk wall hanging. It uses one large square and four small ones to make four matching geese units. It’s easy, fast, there are no triangles to work with, and there’s no fabric waste.

For some reason, my computer or blog or something won’t let me post a link that I wanted to post to explain this method of flying geese. So if you’re not familiar with this method but would like to be, just Google “no waste method for flying geese” or “charm square flying geese” and you should find it.

Another Schnibble in the Works

Schnib

I have Schnibble fever! They're so much fun to make.

This pattern comes from Carrie Nelson's book Schnibbles Times Two, and she calls it "Plan C" (something about plans not always working out on the first try). I'm tentatively calling mine "October Evening" since it's star blocks made with my stash of autumn charm squares.

There are a couple more designs in this book I'd like to make, so when I finish this one, I might start another. Or I might be tired of Schnibbles by then. Who knows? But I do already have fabrics from my stash picked out for the next one.

Yesterday, my book club hosted a "Ramey Day," the purpose of which was for my sister Ramey Channell to talk about her new book The Witches of Moonlight Ridge. Members and guests met at the beautiful home of our friends Bill and Nell to hear Ramey read from her book, talk about what it was like writing it, and sign copies. If you haven't read this wonderful book, along with its precursor Sweet Music on Moonlight Ridge, I highly recommend both. The main characters in both these books are Lily Claire Nash and her cousin Willie T. Nock. The adventures and sleuthing that these two "young'ns" fall into will put the reader smack in the world of growing up in the southern woodlands. You'll find edge-of-the-seat thrills as well as knee slapping humor in these books. Although the author is my sister, and I could be a little prejudiced, I don't think anyone has ever regretted reading a Moonlight Ridge adventure. Don't miss them. You can find them both at Amazon.com or check with your local library.

Cindy Lou Progress

Cl

My Cindy Lou Schnibble is almost done. As you can probably see, the rows aren't joined. And after they are, I'm going to add one or two narrow borders to give it a frame. Then it will be ready for quilting. At first, I thought it was going to be a boring piece. But now that the star points are attached, I think it's looking quite charming. And the borders should add still more charm.

Time for Snowmen

About a week after Christmas, just before the New Year, I took this quilt, “Family Portrait,” down from the foyer wall hanger...

Quilt

,,,and replaced with with this one, “Slumber Party."

Plate

On the antique Singer sewing machine that sits underneath the quilt hanger, I displayed my sweet little snowman plate that I acquired from the thrift store several years ago, along with a photo of Baby Sophie on the day we picked her up in Warwick, New York, in March of 2002. I miss my sweet Sophie.

We got a little bit of it all last night.

The weatherman had warned for several days of a winter weather event, so of course I was looking forward to giant fluffy snowflakes resulting in a white landscape and neighborhood snowmen galore. Didn't get it. We got freezing rain, a few flakes, but mostly sleet. I think this is the most sleet I can remember. It covered the ground last night, but much of it is gone this morning. Evaporated, I guess, because I'm sure nothing is melting out there. It's cold as a grave-digger's destination. When we got up this morning, Skipper went out, ran down to the bottom of the back steps, did a quick tinkle, and ran back up.

After a shower, I'm going back up to the sewing room to work on the Cindy Lou Schnibble. I figured out that I had not made a mistake after all. So I don't have to redo any blocks.

We have about 6" of wet, heavy snow and it's still snowing. COLD, here, too, so it won't melt very soon.

Hugs!

Schnibbling

Schnib1

Not long after Vann passed away, a dear internet quilting friend sent me a comfort package filled with charm packs, layer cakes, and jelly rolls. About that same time, or maybe a while later (I don't remember the exact time frame) I got Schnibble fever. Several of my internet quilting friends were making Schnibbles, and I wanted in on the fun .

By chance I found a little Schnibble pattern, Cindy Lou Who, at the thrift store for 75 cents, bought it, brought it home, and put it with the comfort package goodies. Then on a trip to a favorite quilt shop, which is now out of business, I bought one of Carrie Nelson's books, Schnibbles Times Two, brought it home, and placed it with the comfort goodies. And that, dear friends, is where everything has stayed until this week. I guess I just had to wait until the right inspiration came along, and it did.

For some reason, I decided I wanted to make the Cindy Lou Who quilt for a wall hanging. It's just 36"x 36", so I know it will fit somewhere on my walls. I have all the nine patch blocks made and everything else cut out. I now have to make my snowball blocks and half snowballs and put everything together, and Cindy Lou will be ready to quilt.

Shni2
Schnibble progress thus far. I believe the snowball corners will give this little piece a lot more visual interest. At lease, I hope so. Right now, it just looks a little, well, boring. Actually, now that I'm seeing it on screen, I think I have color placement wrong on four of the blocks. Oh well, back to the sewing machine.

I also discovered this week that I will not be adding a border to my Talking Turkey quilt. As is, it will just barely fit the wall space I have planned for it. So it's officially ready for quilting.

Love Carrie Nelson's patterns, they are so easy to work with.
Sometimes life is crazy and hectic, but it makes me appreciate the less stressful times. I hope 2017 brings you lots of laughter and joy.

Santa Has Left the Building

I'm usually a little sad when the holidays are finally over, but not this year. It has been a rough time for me. Lots of planning and cooking at a time when I would have rather stayed in bed. But it was fun too, celebrating with family and friends and eating too much. But I am glad it's over (actually, this is really only the tenth day of Christmas, 10 out of 12, but that's enough for me). I even have all my decoration down and put away. I didn't do a lot of decorating this year. Just my tabletop tree, a couple of Santa quilts, and a few other geegaws here and there.

Yesterday I hosted the first meeting of the New Year of my quilting bee. I stressed a little about it. I was afraid my house wasn't spruced up enough. But it seemed to suffice, and everyone enjoyed the food and fellowship. And, as someone once said, what difference will it make a hundred years from now?

Below are a few pictures I took yesterday during our show-and-tell.
