Border Befuddlement

Stars

The borders are on my newest Schnibble, but I’m not sure I’m happy. The cornerstones (squares in border corners) were supposed to be four patches like are in the center of the stars. I had those sewn on, but I didn’t like them. There was no contrast between them and the border strips. They really didn’t stand out unless you were very close to the quilt. So I decided that solid squares would be better. I cut the squares from the background (cream) fabric and sewed them on. And although there’s plenty of contrast this time, I’m not sure I like them. Maybe if I bind the quilt with a darker fabric, the cream squares might work. I don’t know. I’m just tired of working on it and thinking about it right now. Maybe tomorrow with a fresh eye, something will come to me.

Any suggestions?

1st: Lay the binding fabric so it peeks about 1/4" around two sides of the quilt. Like it? If so, done.

I'd suggest a darker fabric be used for the four corners - or small stars, diamond in a square or other simple block. Your choice!

Hugs!

The border rectangles introduce a new shape; the main quilt only has squares and half square triangles. I think the border fights with the center because of this. One thing that might work is to trim the border in half so that they appear as squares and have darker color for the corners. Just my suggestions.

Good luck, can't wait to see what you decide!

How about using a 4 patch with low contrast, different from the inner border? I also noticed that 3 of 4 corners have a light and a dark next to them, but fourth has 2 mediums. Maybe this is causing the issue with choosing the corners. Also agreed with testing with binding fabric.

The border needs calming down a bit. Do you have more of the red fabric used in the star points of the top middle star? Plain squares of that in the corners would lend a strong, but calming, contrast, I believe. Could even bind with that. There is enough red used in the quilt that it would calmly contrast. Those are my 2 cents. :-)

Unless you are just certain you want to use that piano key border, I'd ditch it and put on a border using a compatible print fabric.
