Please Get This Cat Out of My Chair

Saw my doctor yesterday. The fatigue and weakness have been getting worse and worse--to the point that, on Tuesday, I truly thought it was time (or maybe too late) to get the affairs in order.

I felt a little better yesterday, at least well enough to make the long drive to Hueytown to see my doc. A visit with Dr. M. always cheers me up. I told him of my creeping fear of the Reaper. While he agreed that I would indeed die, someday, it didn't look like it was due anytime soon. He feels most of my current problems can be chalked up to a severe fibro flare. He gave me four new prescriptions to alleviate the pain, inflammation, and fluid retention (have gained 10 pounds in the past two weeks). The pill corner on my kitchen cabinet is starting to look like an addict's stash.

Dr. M. also had me donate many vials of blood for checking to make sure nothing else is amiss. No report from the blood tests yet.

Hoping all my friends out there are doing well.

My friend, I am so sorry you've continued to feel so very crummy and I hope the new pills successfully take care of each of the annoying symptoms you're enduring.

We had glorious and much needed rain last night and it's continued to sprinkly all day today. The local frogs are rehydrated and deliriously happy. No complaints from me either, but my joints are protesting. Bother!

I have to say I wasn't ready to lose Maya Angelou. Her grace, books, and spoken words have touched me since I was a young adult. She was a humble giant who puts the greedy to shame.

you will never know how amazing you can be."

Hi Sue,
Really, I am so sorry your condition has not improved. Your energy and enthusiasm for your family and friends comes thru on your blog and it is very easy for me to forget your illness.
I was looking through my quilt books and came across 'Scrap Quilts From The Depression'. The face of the lady writing the forward looks so familiar....Sue Ramey Cleveland! It featured a gorgeous quilt 'Glorified Nine Patch' (lovely yellow)owned by you know who. When you are feeling better, it would be great to have a blog show and tell of your beautiful quilts. Thank you again for sharing your mothers lovely double wedding ring. Patty Mc

So sorry-weather also makes aches more miserable. I love Barbara Snn's quite from Maya Angelou. I have often thought it takes a log of energy to appear normal especially on one if the really bad days. It is like wearing a wet wool coat in the heat. Hope you feel better soon with new meds help.

ha-ha! Loved that M. Angelou quote, too. I'm not sure I know what normal is, so I think I will try for amazing.
Susan, I am so glad you checked in with Dr. Just having his reassurance is worth something. Hope the meds help. Prayers for you!

Hi Susan, I was relieved when I read your post as I have been suffering phenomenal fatigue, to the point it took huge effort to just move my arms or shift positions. Then it is accompanied by elevated pain and lots of time spent in bed. I have several things going on, but my Rheumatologist said that the Fibro is making all of them much worse too. Also like you, I've gained weight very quickly and am retaining fluid to the point they checked for Congestive Heart issues (found none). Most of the weight gain and fluid are from the mountain of meds. Which do you suppose is the lesser of two evils???
Anyway, I'm truly sorry your having such a bad time, but I thank you so much for posting about because I too have truly been thinking that I was nearing the end of my time here. Like you, my doctor assured me that I will surely die...everyone does...but it isn't as close as I beginning to think it was.
Guess that means I'd better get busy finishing the poem my Grandson asked me to write and read at his wedding this July, huh?
Gentle hugs coming your way along with holding you in my thoughts and prayers.

A Few Things Quilty

Blog1

Anna is cleaning downstairs, so I'm hold up in the sewing room trying to stay out of her way. I got a little bit of sewing done. The photo shows the friendship triangles that I made for our outgoing guild president's quilt. I also got my guild block of the month made. But I don't like it enough to show a photo. I didn't have any fabric that matched or even coordinated with what I was supposed to match, but it will have to do.

I picked up my Crayon Challenge quilt from my long-arm buddy Lena last week. Now I have to bind it and sew on a few embellishments that I have planned. I can't wait to show it here. I really like it. But I think it's supposed to remain "classified" until the challenge show at guild next month. But just as soon as that's over, I'll show it here.

Blackberry Winter has left us. The high is forecast to reach the 90s this week. So from now until October, I'll be inside even more than usual, trying to stay cool. I am NOT a summer person.

For some reason that's a mystery to me, I left out some of the guild show-and-tell photos from last week. So here are the ones I forgot to post.

I'm not a summer hot-weather person either. It seems since getting lupus (something I did NOT vote for!), I feel the heat horribly and it takes forever to cool off. My face turns bright red just because I get hot and it's not attractive at all. Oh, and being out in the sunshine will likely cause a lupus flare when everything is worse so I have to stay covered up or indoors. Bother! BUT, cheers for air-conditioning, iced tea, and the fact that making quilts can be done indoors!

Love the quilts in their glorious array of colors and patterns. The quilts in the last photo just show how differnt fabrics make identical blocks look unique!

Hot Pockets, SuSu Style

When I come up with a dish that my grandson Jesse likes, I rejoice. It's very hard to feed someone as picky as he is.

I didn't have high hopes that my "hot pockets" would pass muster. So boy! was I surprised when Jesse not only deemed them acceptable but wanted more.

If you have a picky teenager or guy that you are charged with getting food into, you might give these a try.

They're very simple to make.

Ingredients: 1 pound ground beef, 1 pack taco seasoning, 1 can Grands biscuits (8 count), grated cheddar, melted butter

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Brown beef and add seasoning, according to package directions. Divide into 4 equal portions.

3. Roll out biscuits flat. Place one portion of beef mixture in center of one flattened biscuit. Sprinkle with a goodly amount of shredded cheese (optionally, you can use sliced cheddar). Cover with second biscuit. Seal edges of biscuit.* brush tops of pies with melted butter.

4. Repeat for remaining biscuits. Poke a few holes in top of each meat pie.

5. Place meat pies on cookie sheet and bake for about 17 minutes or until lightly brown.

I told Jesse we could make them in different flavors: e.g., with spaghetti sauce, pepperoni, and mozzeralla. He said, "Why ruin a good thing. Keep it Mexican."

*I use this Pampered Chef "Cut and Seal" tool to seal the edges of the biscuits. But you can simply pinch the edges of the biscuits together to seal.

This is how they look ready to go into the oven.

Blackberry Winter

The mercury dropped into the 40s last night, and this morning is bright sunshiny and chilly. I love this time of year when the blackberries are blooming and Mother Nature brings in a cold snap to make sure her berry crop is bountiful. At least that's how my mama explained it. She always said that a year without a Blackberry Winter would be a year with a piddling blackberry crop.

Talking about blackberries has made me hungry. There is nothing in this world better than a dish of warm blackberry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.

But this morning, I'll have to settle for shredded wheat.

We had rain all night and our temperatures have dropped, too. Love it!

The Ides of Sophie

Sophie got her new springtime do this week. But, as you can see from the look on her face, she isn't greatly pleased. She hates going to the groomer; and no matter which different route I take to try to fool her, she knows where she's going shortly after we drive out of the neighborhood, and she cries all the way there. Sharon said Sophie gave her "a hard time" this time. I'm not sure what that means and didn't get a chance to ask because Sharon talks constantly. She wears a Bluetooth thingy in her ear, and she's usually talking on her phone and to me at the same time. Sometime, when I'm trying to converse with the lady, the expression on my face is just like the one Sophie is wearing.

Isn't that just about the rudest thing!!!! My (former) hairdresser did the same thing. The faster she talked, the more she cut. I was nearly bald when I left that LAST time. But please tell Sophie her new "do" is precious and she looks so pretty. You might want to check online. There are several things you can use to help calm Sophie before taking her to the groomer. There are calming collars, sprays and pills to help her stay calm. I get a product called Calm-Ease for my cats. It's a gel I rub on their paw and it helps keep them calm in stressful situations. They love the taste of it. I use it before corralling them into their crate and also when a storm is coming. It really helps. Have a great day.

On 05/15/2014, Barbara Anne said ...

Awwwwww! I can identify with Sophie! When I was small and had to be taken to the doctor's office, I also knew where I was headed, no matter what route my mother took - and I wailed all the way there. Please tell Sophie that I think her summer "do" is charming as is she.

Do you take Sophie on rides in the car when you're not headed for the vet or the groomer? Perhaps if she takes more fun rides, she'll be less upset while in the car. I've never heard of the product that Sandy suggested, so that might be a good place to start.

Hope you can find a new groomer who isn't rudely talking on the phone when you are there. Where are her good manners?

Wishing you a good week ahead in every way!

Hugs!

Susan - she looks like she's been caught being bad - too funny. My Cocker Spaniel went wild a year ago or so ago and the groomer thought it was the commercial dryer. She dries him by hand ever since. He seems particularly bothered by louder noise as he ages. She still looks really pretty for her troubles.

Still Alive

I just noticed that it has been a week since I blogged. I have had a pretty bad week, not only painwise but also with the fatigue and weakness that come along with this condition.

I forced myself to get ready (even put on makeup) and attend quilters guild yesterday. It was a good meeting with great show-and-tell and an interesting speaker.I left there and went by Wally to pick up some needed supplies. By the time I got home, I was ready to be laid out for viewing.

I felt a little better this morning. So after I dropped Sophie off at the groomer's, I decided I would plant the pretty clematis vine that I bought a couple of weeks ago. That experience has taught me that my gardening/yard work days are good and over. I got the thing in the ground, more or less, but what an ordeal. It is very hard to dig a hole and plant a flower when one can neither stoop nor bend. I decided sitting on the ground was the only way I was going to accomplish the task. And of course, I sat square in a fire ant bed. Good thing, too. I don't think I could have ever got back on my feet had it not been for the ants to spur me on.

With my last shreds of energy I dragged the hose to the spot and gave the poor thing a good watering. We'll see if it lives. I wouldn't blame it if it doesn't.

I have photos from guild meeting, but I just don't feel like climbing the stairs to the Big Mac to download them. I'll do it tomorrow. For now, I'm going to lie here and vegetate till Sharon calls me to come pick up Sophie.

Bless your heart and all of your other parts! What a bummer to be so fatigued and aching but you know I understand completely.

You are a stellar writer whether you write a book or not. What a great word picture "laid out for viewing" is and I had to laugh about the fire ants and your quick rise from ground level.

Is there a ground floor area where some computer or the Mac could go so it's available without your climbing stairs?

Thanks for writing as I was just about to send out the search dogs for you.

Big hugs!

Yes...gardening days, as we knew it, are over. I have a stool and a riding lawn mower with a trailer, and this helps me get around the yard.
Other then being knocked out with pain med, I have not found any RX that completely stops the pain. Good days and rough days. Our new life style I guess.

We can still see, touch, eat, and smell. Something to say about that!! Hugs, Sharon

Bless your heart and all your parts, my friend. What an awful feeling to be in such misery. Do you get any relief from a hot bath, a heated mattress pad or electric blanket? If not, methinks your doctor needs to be consulted about anti-inflammatory medicine and pain medicine. There has got to be something to help you. Wish I could come visit and bring lunch.

I seem to feel better when I'm warm so layer up in soft clothes and sit on soft furniture. A fashion plate I am not but that's okay.

Wishing you well.

Happy Birthday to India

IndiaAfter a tedious start to the weekend (a broken water heater),things got decidedly better yesterday afternoon as we gathered at my sister Ramey's house to celebrate my niece India's birthday. We enjoyed a delicious hamburger lunch, followed by a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" before India blew out her candles. After we had all consumed as much cake and ice cream as we could manage, India tackled a great pile of gifts, accompanied by some funny birthday cards. It was a great afternoon.

However, the water heater is still broken. I've had pans under it all weekend, catching the drip and requiring frequent trips to the basement at all hours to empty the pans.

The plumber finally arrived this morning, took one look, and declared he was on his way to pick up a new water heater. He promised to return tomorrow afternoon to install it. So I will get to enjoy another day of emptying water-drip pans.

Oh, Fraptious Day!

Ah, the miseries of defunct water heaters. I hear you. Late last week we dealt with the joys of a toilet that suddenly quit flushing and the repair parts and uncomfortable positions its installation required. Ouch!

Good pacemaker check for AMIL this morning so that's a plus. Her 2nd sleep study is Wed. night and this time they'll try her with a C-pap. Do pray!

My red knockouts around the front of my house, are blooming profusely too.

May Day

Only halfway done, and already this week has been a trial. Two days of stormy weather had my pain level off the charts. It's better now; but, of course, after that much pain comes heavy fatigue.

We had no storm damage in my immediate area, but communities to the north got hit with tornadoes.

Yesterday I was trying to chop down a big dead rose bush, and I stepped with both feet into a fire ant bed and didn't realize I had until my feet were on fire. I left my clippings where they lay for Steve to move when he comes to cut the grass. I guess the stormy weather has him behind schedule. He was supposed to be here yesterday.

I decided to go chemical free with the lawn, so I stopped the lawn service. My lawn has had no chemicals on it for several months now--and the weeds are knee high. It's a little embarrassing, but I see that many of my neighbors' lawns are also weedy. So I think I'm going to stay with no chemicals--at least until someone gets up a petition to have me removed from the neighborhood.

Jesse got his first credit card yesterday. I'm glad he waited until he was mature enough to use it responsibly before he got one.

I have to grocery shop today. And you know how I feel about that.

Happy May Day, everyone.

Happy May Day to you too, Susan. Hope you're feeling better today. Just don't overdo! Hate those fire ants. We have several mounds in our yard since all the rain we've had lately. One would think that if we can put a man on the moon surely somebody could come up with a way to get rid of these boogers without using dynamite!!! Hope your day is a good one.

Happy May Day from me to you, too!! Love the cute picture. :)

We had 4.5" of rain in April and most of that was in the last week and it had our joints yelling at us, too. Bummer about that and glub, glub! Did you see that Pensacola, FL got 24" of rain yesterday? Mercy!

Have you ever dumped a pound of cornmeal on a fire ant mound (not before rain is due)? We were told to do that when we had fire ants in TX and it killed them with one application. It seems they eat the cornmeal and it swells up inside them and they die. Not a bad chemical-free plan, either.

Wishing you well.

Hugs!
