Sunny, With a Chance of Furbies

Good morning, Blogland! It's a beautiful sunny day here at the Yellow House, albeit cold. Today's goals: 1) clean out the freezer, 2) go grocery shopping, the latter being my very most hated chore.

I think I will wait till later in the day to shop. Jesse worked last night and will sleep today until about 3:00. That way, I can employ him to carry up the bags of groceries without having to interrupt his sleep. But then, I'll have to rush to make dinner and pack his lunch before he leaves at 5:30. I think a better plan would be to go ahead and do my shopping, bring up whatever needs refrigeration, and leave the rest in the car until Jesse is awake. That way, there will be time for a little rest between shopping and cooking.

Everything is a juggling act in my life these days. I remember, sometimes with longing, those days when I hit the floor running every morning and didn't have to plan for resting between chores--back when I had an occasional night life, before fibro, before the back problem got so bad, before age started adding to the infirmaties, before pajamas became my everyday wear.

But I just thank God that I can still hit the floor at all, if not running. Oh, I don't even remember the last time I ran. But I can walk, and walking is all I need--unless the house catches fire or a bear gets after me. And, you know, I bet you I could run then.

I agree with you. As long as I can still get going, I don't need to run! I do wish I could still get on the floor as easy as days gone by, but I just take my time and try not to think of how it looks when I'm getting up!

Do I ever hear you, girlfriend! Scoot over a bit, please, and I'll join you in the wishing for that carefree energy of years gone by. Lupus fatigue means all my plans every single day are subject to change if I'm too tired. I seldom get thru my to-do list and it isn't ever a very long list to start with. Bummer to the max.

Yep, shopping and bringing in only the frozen stuff is a plan - but as cold as it is outside, perhaps you wouldn't even need to do that!

Cheers for able-bodied and willing helpers!

BTW, Sophie is looking fetching!

Hugs!

Ditto and ditto to the post and to the comments. :-)
May I suggest saving the freezer clean out until, oh, say, mid-July? And then, in the heat of the afternoon, enjoy every minute of it. :-) I enjoy it much more at that time of year, especially if there is a half-gone carton of ice cream to distract.

Yes, planning for rest is the norm now. I'm almost to the point of Cymbalta or Lyrica (tried both once for about 3 days each, didn't know if I was in the world and had no energy). But then I rest, take Aleve and think, no, not yet. Just have to "pace ourselves." Your freezer is so neat. Good luck on the NutriSystem!

Happiness Is a Neat Pantry

If you identify some of the groceries as bearing the NutriSystem brand, you are not mistaken. It has come to this. I've decided that dropping a few pounds might improve my health and alleviate some of my symptoms. But it's a quandary as to whether the symptoms or these rather cheerless meals are the worst for my peace and happiness. That smile on Marie Osmond's face is simply a product of her acting skills.

I've been on this fare for four days and have perhaps lost a couple of pounds. I will try to stick with it at least through my 30-day supply. Who knows? If my weight loss is impressive, I might find incentive to continue.

Way to go in having things so perfectly organized in your pantry and losing weight to boot!! Applause, applause!!

I'm eating smaller portions, having soup more often, and trying to drink more hot tea since my blasted lupus fatigue prevents me from exercising because I need to lose weight, too. You're right, it's no fun to limit your food choices! I certainly hope you find the NS foods tasty. Are you allowed to add seasonings?

It cold again here so soup isn't really a hardship, it just makes me feel sloshy!

Hugs!

But Then, I've Never Liked to Get a Haircut Either

I dropped Sophie off at the Groomer this morning, so now I'm feeling guilty. Even though I took a different route this morning from what we usually take, Miss Sophie was not fooled. Before we got anywhere near the groomer's house, Sophie started whining and fussing and shivering. She was pitching a fit by the time we got there. But as objectionable as she finds these visits, she strutted right into Sharon's grooming studio and into the crate waiting for her. Then she looked up at me as if to say, "I hate you." Even after all these years, I still get teary when I have to leave her at the groomer or the vet, or anywhere.

Then to make matters worse, when we got home, Skipper and Taco acted like I have stolen their best friend and taken her far away, never to be seen again. Taco tried to snuggle with Skipper for comfort, like he does with Sophie. But, as expected, Skipper was having none of it and got hateful with Taco. So he finally got in the chair where he and Sophie sleep at night and snuggled up with their blanket.

Now I'm going to clean out and organize my pantry, a long-overdue job, to take me mind off Furbies who are thoroughly displeased with me.

Awwwwwwwwwww! Bless Sophie's little pea-picking heart as Tennessee Earnie Ford would say! I hope she struts back to the car, proud of her new haircut.

Did you read an on-line story last week about how dogs and humans have similar brain responses to emotions? Perhaps Sophie and the other Furbabies read your feelings of guilt, upset, and sadness and react to that when this situation comes up?

Hope you're feeling good otherwise and make pleasing progress in your pantry. When you get to a stopping place in the pantry clear-up, clear-out, you should reward your good work with something that delights you.

We're heading back into a week of winter weather, so for this area, Phil might have been right back on Groundhog day.

Hugs!

Challenge Hint

HintI'm going to keep my challenge quilt a secret until after the June guild meeting/mini quilt show. But here's a hint (photo at left).

I made four blocks over the weekend. The quilt will have 12 main blocks with a pieced border.

Happy President's Day to all.

Well, isn't that just the cutest hint ever given?! Are you hand stitching the button-hole stitches or machine stitching? Either way, they're beautifully uniform! Love your fabrics, too.

I'm working on a 4 block winter wall quilt because I don't have one and after these weeks of frigid cold and snow, I thought it was time I did. I'm using the Ribbon Star pattern from the Island Batik site "Quilted in Honor" free patterns.

Hope it's warmer there than it is here but we have several 60*+ days coming this week.

Hugs!

Guild Challenge 2014

We have a fun new guild challenge going on this year in which each person, without looking, draws three Crayola crayons from a box and uses those for her colorway to make a quilt--and all fabrics have to come from your stash or a friend's stash. We can't buy any new fabrics for the quilt. I drew Sky Blue, Brick Red, and something Crayola calls Lavender that looks Pink to me. I love the crayons I drew.

Challenge

We can add black and neutral to these three colors, but that's it. The quilts are due to be finished to show and be judged at our June meeting. I have come up with a design and pulled a few fabrics from my stash. Most of the fabrics are quite old; but, as they say, what goes around comes around. They don't really feel outdated to me.

I'm not going to show my quilt design yet. I don't want guild members to see it until the June meeting.

I have six rows of my Granny Square quilt joined and have six rows to go. I'm still hand piecing it,

Happy Valentines Day to you all.

What a great challenge and what a wonderful group of colors you happened to pick from the Crayon box! These will work together to make a quilt that will go nearly anywhere in your charming home! How great is that?

Do the challenge quilts have to be a certain finished size or contain a specific number of blocks?

Hope you and your guild members have lots of fun making your individually colored quilts. The June meeting is sure to be very interesting! I can hardly wait to see the show and tell photos.

Hugs!

Kinder and Gentler Winter Storm

The snow started here just before dark last night. I didn't think about taking a photo until it had already begun to melt this morning. This one was a fluffy wet snow that draped trees and bushes but apparently didn't freeze to the roads like the one two weeks ago. This time, I've heard of no stranded motorists or impounded vehicles. And Jesse was already off to work by the time I got up this morning.

The sun is out now, so all the white stuff should be gone in a few hours.

Lovely picture of your snowy neighborhood and I am glad to hear all is well there. Snow day! Enjoy being tucked in away from the mush of meltdown.

We got about 7" of snow with ice on top and it's melting somewhat but more is enroute this afternoon and evening. What frozen stuff it will be if it comes at all remains to be seen.

If I get myself in gear, I could sew 4 simple blocks from winter fabrics and would be quite pleased with myself for accomplishing that. I think I can, etc!

Stay cozy!

Susan Cleveland, Meet Susan Cleveland

  Guild1
Susan R. Cleveland (me) and Susan K. Cleveland

I have been wanting to meet this lady, Susan K. Cleveland, ever since I heard of her, back when people kept telling me that I was on tv the other day--when in fact, I knew I had not been.

I got my chance yesterday. My guild enjoyed a program by this award-winning quilt-book author and teacher in which she shared many of her marvelous quilt creations.

Susan is not only a talented quilter and teacher, but she is also an exuberant, energetic, and funny, funny lady. I enjoyed her program so very much.

When we met face to face, I learned that she had also been looking forward to meeting me--something I never imagined. Yeah, we're Facebook friends, but I have lots of prominent quilting teachers/authors as Facebook friends who probably don't give me a thought.

"You were with Fons & Porter!" she exclaimed as we shook hands. "And you have books!" (I did work with Fons & Porter and was the first editor of Love of Quilting, and I do have books, albeit they're all out of print now I believe.) She really acted as if she were as happy to meet me as I was to meet her. I really enjoyed our brief visit.

We share a name, true, but I'm afraid I don't and never will match her talents as a quilt designer. Here are a few of the quilts she shared with us.

The Rotary Ripper

I just had an epiphany! Someone (maybe me?) should write a series of cozy mysteries about a serial killer who is also a quilter. We have already several mystery series about sleuths and detectives who are quilters.

This would be fun. Our killer's weapon of choice would be a rotary cutter, which she would use to slit throats of people whom she deems bad quilters--those whose points don't match, whose sense of color is askew, whose seams never measure a quarter inch. Or maybe even perfect quilters catch our killer's attention from time to time. For instance, one particularly perfect appliquer wins all the blue ribbons at all the quilt shows and always get her quilts juried into the best shows. Our killer (I think we'll call her The Rotary Ripper) is a pretty good quilt artist herself, and she's sick and tired of Miss Perfect hogging all the blue ribbons, so she draws a bead on her.

What do you think? Would you buy these mysteries?

Hooo - HA!!! Does this seem to be too close to the "quilt police" that we quilters assure each other doesn't exist?? Would quilt police be needed to catch The Rotary Ripper?? Instead of being a serial killer, would she be on a roll? If the killer was a HE, would his name be Mat?!! :)

I've probably committed the other quilting sins, but I have to agree with NO Polyester.

Love your imagination!!

Bee Report & Dexter

I missed quilt bee meeting on Monday, but Cyndi took photos so at least I got to see Show & Tell. Here are a couple of shots.

  Securedownload
Our Quilt of Valor after being quilted by Mary S.

Securedownload-1
Martha's Block of the Month win (red/white blocks) paired with her black/white nine patches made a lovely quilt.

I am loving my new wide-screen, high-def tv and my Roku streaming player that Santa brought me a little late. But I'm finding that the new setup is changing my life, and maybe not all for the better. Since I now have access to all the movies and missed tv episodes I can ever want to watch, I'm not reading nearly as much. Well, actually, not at all in fact. Except for news and stories I read on the internet, my reading has been cut to zilch. You might have noticed that I haven't added one new book to my book list in the left sidebar of this blog. That's because I haven't read even one book this year.

My nephew, who got his Roku a while before I got mine, says I will get tired of it and run out of good movies and shows to watch. So maybe then I'll get back to my book reading. For now, I still plan to enjoy watching movies and tv dramas that I haven't seen. It's such fun!

Dexter-coverFor the past couple of weeks, I've been watching "Dexter," a tv series about a police blood spatter analyst/serial killer. The show is very interesting but also very disturbing--not only because of the obvious fact that it is about a serial killer (well, actually, several serial killers and murderers) but also because one never is sure whose side to be on. Dexter is in many ways an engaging and charming character, and one tends to want things to turn out well for him. Sometimes I find myself rooting against the "good guys." Of course, Dexter only kills bad guys, so that helps make it feel all right to root for him. Still, I'm aware that vigilantism is counter to our entire system of social justice, therefore Dexter is, in fact, a bad guy. (There's also that nagging little fact that the boy obviously enjoys his kills.)

But the show doesn't play him up as a bad guy. He's a loving husband, father, stepfather, and brother. What's not to like? Well, except for the killer part, which Dexter calls his Dark Passenger. The show has made me wish I was back in college so I could write a analytical paper on Dexter. If you aren't skittish about shows about murder, you might enjoy this one. I'm about to start on the last season, and I'm very nervous about what's going to happen to Dexter. (If you know, please don't tell me.)

Bummer about missing the bee meeting, but those things happen sometimes. Love the quilts and it was so nice of Cyndi to send you photos!

Haven't seen even episode 1 of Dexter but we're thinking of leaving cable TV behind due to cost and invest in Roku or something of the sort. ACORN offers BBC shows for something like $80/year and that appeals to us.

We have heat again, but next week our dear boiler that gives us HOT water will leave as it's plumbing is ancient and fatally flawed. We'll get a heat pump, a water heater, and a payment plan but that beats being cold.

Hugs!

A Town Divided

893692_10203043860443570_839012948_o

So, the snow is gone. Schools are back in session. People are back at work. But I'm not sure our town will ever be the same.

During the height of our winter storm state of emergency, many people in our area found it necessary to abandon their stranded vehicles and find alternate modes to carry them to shelter. Many of them walked.

Our governor went on tv to assure everyone that they should not worry about their stranded vehicles. Nobody's cars would be towed, he said--more than once.

But apparently the mayor of my town didn't get the message. Even while the governor's assurances were being televised, Leeds was in the process of towing and impounding stranded vehicles. Motorists were finding that the two private garages that had been hired to tow the cars were charging people exorbitant fees to retrieve their cars. Our mayor was claiming that the cars had to be moved in order to rescue people (maybe) and that they could only be moved to impounding lots (not true; they could have been moved to the side of the road, to one lane, to nearby parking lots).

Many people were outraged, including me and my family. As you've heard, my daughter was one of the motorists who had found it necessary to leave her car in the snow. And the place where cars were being towed just happened to be the area where Andy had to leave her car. She spent two days unable to reach her car because of the ice and not knowing whether or not it had been impounded or would be before she could reach it. Fortunately, she got to it just before the tow truck did.

After several tales of how this situation would be rectified (from "It's not the city's responsibility to pay these charges," to  "It's illegal to use public funds to benefit private citizens," to "The governor's office has said the state will reimburse motorists for the charges,") our mayor has now stated that our city government will reimburse motorists for towing/impound fees. I hope this one is true for the sake of people who do not have the money to get their cars out of jail.

Many people are supporting our mayor for the way he handled the situation. Many more are not. And while I know his job can't be an easy one, I cannot agree with the way he handled our town's crisis. The man is a long-time friend of mine, since high school. But I fear I have lost a friend. I don't know if he handled everyone's complaints the way he handled mine, but to me he sent a scathing email, berating me for disagreeing with his decision.

It seems crisis situations really bring out the best and worst of people. Was it the politician or the friend, I wonder, that sent that scathing email to you? Maybe he vented at you BECAUSE you were a friend and he felt safe doing so, even though you certainly didn't deserve it. I hope he reaches out to you and makes amends. It's sad to lose old friends.

Sue-
It must have been very unsettling to receive such a nasty email from someone you considered a life long friend. It sounds as though the Mayor is continuing to demonstrate poor judgement & questionable leadership skills. He clearly is very defensive on the subject of the snow storm and the consequences. He might want to try and get some thick skin as the topic is unlikely to go away any time soon. I worked in State government for many years and usually when someone like a Mayor is brought to the Governors' attention for causing a public problem they are often given a reprimand. Basically they are put on notice to quit causing problems because the problems usually do nothing, but have the potential to damage the Governors' image. That is why I am very surprised that the Mayor would respond to your comments in such an nasty email. He is foolish to send anything to a concerned citizen (friend or not) that creates a paper trail back to him. Sorry I sound so paranoid, but that was my experience with State government. You never know when someone will stab you in the back to put themselves in a better position to climb the hierarchy.I don't think the Mayor is thinking clearly or he would not have responded at all rather than be so unpleasant to you. I don't think many people in politics remember what the title of Civil Servant means anymore. It is all about personal gain. Gaining power is everything to some and most have no interest in serving the public at all.

We had a bad snow storm here about 15 years ago and there were a lot of tow companies that were accused of price gouging. Someone from the city quickly announced that they had passed a new law restricting tow services from charging more than what was normally charged in the county and that there were now high fines and potential loss of their operating business license if found guilty of overcharging. In Portland, when we have snow once or twice a Winter (if at all), it widely publicized that anyone who abandons their car or if it becomes disabled it is quickly towed to an impound lot, usually out in the sticks somewhere. I do believe that a two driver who once came to tow my car told me that once they get an order from the police or private property owner and they don't know where to contact the owner, they are required to tow it to the impound yard to collect fees and to prevent any vandalism from being done to a car they towed since they can be sued. Maybe this is why the cars in your area could not be left in the parking lots. It may be a liability issue. Once the car is touched by the tow operator they are responsible for keeping the car in their possession until released. So there may be a bit of truth to that part. But it is very bad communication between the Governor's office & your Mayors'.
I think there will be more fall out from lack of preparation for the storm. There are bound to be law suits as people lose employment because they had no car for transportation, parents of children who had to sleep at school are likely to sue over all kinds of things around that one and not having access to ERs and medications if you were trapped in a car for without medications, food or water. The people in the hardest spot are those who missed a week of work and now can't afford to pay the impound fees that run several hundred dollars.
The Gov. of Georgia & Mayor of Atlanta are just lying that the weather forecast never predicted snow. Al Roker on MSNBC got so angry that he showed the forecasts they gave hour by hour. Georgia & Atlanta had a full days warning about getting snow as it went from an advisory to a warning, but the Mayor & Gov. continue to repeat their excuse and deny being "Asleep at the Wheel". To not close the schools was inexcusable to me. Endangering people's lives, esp. in such dangerously cold temps. was unforgivable. Insiders in Atlanta have been suggesting that the warning was ignored because the Mayor's office had not budgeted for severe weather and had not purchased deicer or sand. Their budget was in trouble & they gambled that they would not need it. I guess I will wait until the investigation is done to see.
I wish your friend had thought his response through before he decided to unload on you. If the relationship goes kaput he will be the loser in my opinion. How dumb to turn on a friend over a business issue. If he was smart he would have not said anything. As my Mom taught me - "If you can't say something good about someone, then don't say anything at all" Don't let him get to you. He's probably having a male mental pause moment. Make sure Andy never leaves home without her cell phone again, they can be such a life saver and you never know when you'll really need it.
We had out Arctic Vortex before Christmas. It is so dry here with the drought. It was 67 at the coast last week. It rarely gets that warm there even in July. Now we are about to get a week of below freezing and night in the low teens. Snow is now being predicted for next Saturday. As you have probably guessed, I will be leaving my home for anything as soon as I see the first flake. The electric, gas & heating oil companies must love all this cold weather.
Take care and don't let the all the local controversies get to you. This too shall pass.

Nope, your mayor has no grounds for sending that horrid email to you or any critic. Govenor's word trumps mayor, the end!! There should also be a penality for those tow truck companies robbing folks blind. No fair!!

I'm glad Andy was able to rescue her car before it became part of the messy contraversy.

Our 2nd snow is gone, too, and today's high is forecast to be 65*F, but then it will get colder again in the coming week.

Did I tell you that the heat in 2/3 of our home quit on the 22nd, we couldn't get the repair guy until the 29th and he couldn't fix it, so another guy came the 29th and a 3rd guy came on the 30th. It's still not fixed and an "expert" is coming on the 5th. Happily, the bedrooms and 2 bathrooms are warm but our downstairs 1/2 bath feels like an outhouse. We're dressed like Nanook of the North! Do pray!

Hugs!

Of course I've seen this all over the news and think it was just crazy! When I finally left my daughter's house it was complete chaos merging around parked cars on Hwy 280. I'm sure you know what a mess it is daily much less a snowstorm. I am glad to hear that the money is being refunded for the towing!
Hugs,
Donna
