Animal Farm

Aniimals3
The kitties got a new downstairs scratching post (which isn't really a post) since Sophie has decided to allow them to stay downstairs more.

All things considered, I feel quite a bit better today than I have in more than a week. The back pain has calmed considerably. I even had enough energy to get up at 6:00 this morning and get ready to take one of Andy's cats, Moxey, in to the spay/neuter clinic. (Andy had to be at work early and couldn't take her.) Moxey is Taco and Bella's mama. She is having her lady parts removed today to prevent Taco and Bella from acquiring any siblings.

Yesterday, while Cheryl worked downstairs, I got binding cut and stitched together for the secret Christmas present quilt. Today I'm planning to bind the quilt.

However, at the first twinge of back pain, I'm going to hasten back to my bed. I am trying to convince myself that I have to pay more attention to what my body says, stop trying to ignore its pleas for pampering. And that's hard to do, as many of you know. There is much I want to do, much I need to do, and much I feel I'm responsible for doing. I'm going to try to do as President Obama says and take "a balanced approach." I am definitely not going to make all my cuts from the things I want to do in order to accommodate all the things I need to do and feel responsible to do.

Things are going well among the animals, or as well as can be expected, I suppose. Sophie has reconciled herself to life with cats. You can tell she doesn't like it, and tells me in a loud voice when either Taco or Bella is someplace where they shouldn't be. But she's adjusting.

Below are some pretty bad shots of life among the animals at the Yellow House.

So now, for the first time in her life, she is sleeping in my bed. I sleep sandwiched between two dogs, which might have a lot to do with why I'm not sleeping well lately.

Oh my, the kitties are really growing up. They are so cute and so are Sophie and Skipper. That last picture of Skipper is so cute. Glad you're feeling better today and will continue to do so.

Cheers that you're feeling lots better and that you've wisely decided on the "balanced approach." Best yet, you'll use some of your spoons for fun even if some task falls by the wayside.

The kittens have gotten so much bigger and am glad there is peace and quiet among the critters. Good think your lovely home has so many comfy places to snooze!

Am off to stay with FIL while AMIL and DH go to the grocery.

Hugs!

LOL they are all so cute! Isn't it funny how animals rule our homes? And I wasn't raised that way - Daddy always insisted animals stay outside, so I would open the screen at night after my folks went to bed and let my cat in to sleep with me. If Daddy found out...oh boy.

So glad you are feeling better and good advice on listening to our bodies.

Stair Trek

PinHouseI haven't been upstairs since Monday. In fact, I haven't been out of bed much since Monday. My back problem has been in high gear, and the pain has worn me out. It seems a bit better today, though. I haven't even had to take a muscle relaxer yet today. So I was able to climb the stairs to the sewing room and sit down at my computer for a blog post. But now I realize I don't have much to talk about except my aching back--and y'all read enough about my aches and infirmities as it is.

So I'll show you this instead (photo above). This is a block for my "Little Pink Houses" quilt, made from Shabby Fabrics' block-of-the-month pattern, "Sweetheart Houses." All the pieces are fused, but no stitching yet.

Loose seam

Does your long-arm quilter do this--mark any seams on your quilt that haven't been caught up in the stitching? Craig did this for the secret quilt where I had missed a seam, and Lena at New Traditions does it too. Maybe all longarmers do this, I don't know, but it certainly is a nice service. I would probably never see my booboos if they didn't do it.

Cheryl is downstairs cleaning, so I think I'll stay up here out of her way and work on making binding for the secret quilt. Christmas will be here before you can say "Jack Robinson."

Susan, I am so sorry about your back. I don't know what's going on with backs lately. Seems like so many people are having problems. These things seem to run in cycles, don't they? I hope today will be a better day for you and you'll get a lot accomplished. With the white tornado downstairs, you'd better stay upstairs or you might get caught up in her flurry!! Be kind to yourself today and take it easy. It'll still be there tomorrow if it doesn't get done today!

Bother about the back pain issues but am glad to hear you're feeling better today. Hope you'll feel better and better each day forward, too.

Your Little Pink House is so cute and I love the details of the shutters and window boxes! You can imagine the most wonderful ways to add charm to your applique!

I've never had a head's up indication from any long-arm quilter I've used and find that interesting.

Cheers for all the amazing Cheryl will accomplish today! Gotta love the energy and stamina of the young and able-bodied. Sigh!

Be good to you. It's not December quite yet.

Hugs!

I like the look and feel of your pink cottage. I have never taken a quilt to a long arm quilter, but I think that is a wonderful idea. I hope you start feeling better soon. I don't have fybro, but I do have a couple of forms of arthritis and I know how the changing seasons affect that, so can sympathize with you. Rest, relax and read is my motto when I get sore.

Beautiful block! I haven't even finished my first quilt yet, but I love the way quilters help one another so unselfishly and think it is great that the long-arm'ers provide such support.

A Holiday Poem

It Came Upon a Black Friday: A Modern Christmas Carol

It came upon a Black Friday,
That glorious shopping spree,
That Bubba brought his gun with him
To make sure he got that tee-vee.

The mob was teeming down the aisles,
And everyone wanted to be
The first to get his hands upon
That 55-inch HDTV.

But Bubba had eaten too much turkey
And dressing and gravy and such
At his family's big Thanksfeasting
That they laughingly called a small lunch.

Even though he had worn his go-fasties,
And remembered his stretchiest drawers,
He was still outrun by two hustlers
Who passed him just inside the doors.

"How fortunate I brought my gun with me,"
Said Bubba as the two goons ran by.
"Thank God for the Second Amendment
That lets me go armed on the sly."

Bubba reached into his jacket
And took out his Glock, big and mean.
He drew down on those two hustlers
Just as they had reached that wide-screen.

Bubba blew the smoke from his pistol
And crossed that tv off his list.
"When I go shopping," he stated,
"I rarely, if ever do, miss."

Our Bubba now sits in Kilby--
Twenty to life is his goal--
With only a little old analog
On which to watch the Iron Bowl.

“I don’t think that it had anything to do with merchandise,” said one shopper, Kollet Probst, who huddled in a restroom with other shoppers after hearing gunfire. “It was so odd and unprovoked."

The Day After

A small group of us gathered at my house for our traditional Thanksgiving feast yesterday. Unfortunately, several couldn't be with us. Andy came down with some kind of crud, Buffy (niece) and her crew had other plans, and Cait and Kathryn, of course, are too far away in Providence to attend. But Jesse, Ramey, Jed, India, Joanne, and I did our best to make a dent in all the food we had prepared.

Everything was wonderful. The crockpot chicken and dressing (made with 5-egg cornbread) was delish, as was Huck's smoked turkey and a small ham (in deference to Jesse, who doesn't like turkey). We had a table full of sides, including a wonderful broccoli casserole by Joanne; a crispy salad full of heirloom tomato, cucumber, peppers, and all kinds of lettuce that Jed had put together; Ramey's signature redneck caviar; mashed potatoes, two kinds of gravy, Italian green beans, green beans with almonds by India, cranberry sauce, and rolls. I also made a chocolate cake.

But the piece de resistance, in my opinion, was Ramey's sweet potato pie, still warm from the oven when we cut into it. I so wish I had taken a picture of it because it was beautiful with cookie cutter pie crust leaves decorating the top. But the best thing about it was its taste. OH SO GOOD! I'm going to see if I can get her to make another one just for me for Christmas.

I have a refrigerator full of leftovers of every description. I do hope somebody drops by to help me and Jesse eat them.

On Friday, I took time to make a quick trip to Crestline to pick up the "secret" quilt from my friend Craig, who quilted it for me. I couldn't believe he had finished it so quickly. And it's beautiful. Here's a photo of the back to show Craig's quilting. I still can't show the front, of course. But you'll see it later.

Quilting

I'm very happy to report that all the four-legged occupants of The Yellow House are getting along well. We can finally let Sophie and the kitties in the same room together without restraining Sophie. They have even played and taken naps on my bed together. So I guess the rough part is over. Several opportunities for great photos have presented themselves. Unfortunately, my trusty Nikon was not handy during any of those times. I'm going to have to start keeping it nearby.

Happy Black Friday, everyone. I'm laying low today. I wouldn't go near a retailer on this day of mad consumerism for a basketful of gold monkey tails. I hate crowds, and I'm not too crazy about shopping. So this is a day I celebrate by staying as far away from Walmart, et al, as possible.

My computer is VERY near its end, my company - who HAD decided to stay through the weekend - left a minute ago because they were called to a pow wow up North, I didn't get to eat ANY of the yummy leftovers today - and only 492 calories worth of Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. But I am content, comfy, and happy. Why? Because I have a good book to finish tonight, I watched the original CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN awhile ago, I have been crocheting like crazy, and I still am able to check my friends' blogs & say hello! YAY for the doggy & kitty truce! I knew Ms. Sophie was way too sweet to NOT accept Taco & Bella! Your meal sounded DELICIOUS. Tooooooo darned delicious! Sigh! LOL! Finally - that's the BACKSIDE of your quilt???? It's gorgeous! I REALLY can't wait to see the front side! LOVE YOU, and I'm with YOU about Black Friday! Not a snowball's chance in Hades!

Glad to hear those who were able got together to feast at your home yesterday. Seems Andy is missing too much of the fun and foods so hope she stays healthy for Christmas with its gatherings and lovely foods.

Craig must be an amazing quilter as that quilt back looks glorious! I look forward to seeing the front of the quilt when appropriate.

Cheers that the four-legged kids are playing well together at last!

We're with you in staying home on Black Friday. Shudder!

I'm intent on getting back to my Shade Cascade quilts and other Christmas gifts now that AMIL has her two Christmas wall hangings (check your email).

Hang on tight - we're headed for Christmas!

Five Eggs

EggsFive eggs. Not three eggs, not 53 eggs, not 5x3=15 eggs. Five eggs.

The call for an unusually large number of eggs, combined with my typo, caused confusion about the ingredients for the Crockpot Chicken and Dressing. I checked with my friend, Martha, from whom the recipe came, and she confirmed that the number of eggs is indeed five. Five eggs.

Martha has never steered me wrong, so that's how many I'm going to use when I make the dish on Thanksgiving. Five. Eggs.

I am having off-and-on computer/internet problems. And I have a ton and half of stuff to do before the family comes day after tomorrow for our Thanksgiving feast. So I might not be back to blogging until after Turkey Day--and then again, I might. You never know, as my dear MIL Irene used to love to say.

So if you don't hear from me again before, I want to wish all my blog reading friends a very happy Thanksgiving. And I also want you to know that when I list the things I'm thankful for, you are all right up that at the top of the list.

Hi there!

Thanks for the clarification on the number of eggs needed for the yummy sounding chicken and dressing. Thanks again, to Martha, too!

In the past few days, I machine quilted in-the-ditch on both of the secret Christmas wall hangings that I hope to give AMIL on Friday. This morning I cut and pieced the binding strips and am pressing that long length now. If I did the math correctly, this one length of binding should go around the two wall hangings. Fingers crossed!

Hope your internet problems go away promptly and that you get everything on your to-do list done with energy left over.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family, too! Among other things, I am so thankful for the many on-line friends who live far and wide across this country and around the world.

Hugs!

Crockpot Chicken and Dressing

100_3913Some of you asked for the recipe for crockpot chicken and dressing, so I'm posting the recipe that my friend Martha shared with us at bee. I have not made it yet, but I know already that I'll do a bit of tweaking. Instead of using half cornmeal and half flour, I will likely used cornmeal mix, which I always use to make my cornbread. I'll also probably add a can of cream of chicken soup and use plain milk instead of buttermilk, only because I don't want to buy a container of buttermilk and have to throw most of it away. (We don't drink that stuff here.) Otherwise, I'll probably go by Martha's directions.

Crockpot Chicken and Dressing

5 3ggs
1 1/2 cups self rising flour
1 1/2 cups self rising cornmeal
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 Tablespoons oil
3/4 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 small chicken or pieces to equal (cook, debone, and chop into large pieces)
58 oz. chicken broth
1 Tablespoon salt
2 Tablespoon sage
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 stick butter or margarine

Mix first 5 ingredients If mixtre is too thick, add water. Cook for cornbread. Cool and crumble in large bowl. Add celery, onions, and pour broth over mix. Add cut-up chicken, sage, salt, and pepper. Mix well. Put in large crockpot and push stick of butter into center of mixture. Cook 3 hours on low. Stir occasionally.

Sophie got a hair cut on Wednesday. Jesse thinks they took a little too much hair off, and probably so for the cold weather. I've been putting her Christmas sweater on her when she goes outside. But she'll be a hair ball again in no time. And she's so much easier to keep clean this way.

Five eggs?

On 11/17/2012, sophie said ...

I made a turkey and dressing version of this recipe (I think it was called Thanksgiving in a crockpot) last year and was surprised how well it turned out. Usually I'm invited elsewhere for the holiday meal and this was a good way to have some Thanksgiving smells and leftovers at my house.

Poor Sophie. As another Sophie waiting for a bad haircut to grow out, I am sympathetic. The good thing about hair--on people and pets--is that it GROWS and so no bad haircut has to be a life long tragedy :-)

On 11/17/2012, Barbara Anne said ...

Sounds delicous! I, too, wondered at the number of eggs as the first listed ingredient.

In my aunt's Home Demonstration Club cookbook (from 1972), this is the substitution way to "make" buttermilk:
For 1 cup buttermilk (aka "sour milk) put 1 TBSP lemon juice OR vinegar in a 1 cup measuring cup and add sweet milk to make 1 cup.

Sophie looks so cute but I'm glad she has a sweater to wear when she's outdoors.

Hugs!

YUMMMMMMM! I am MAKING tons of food for the holiday because I have a houseful of Indians coming (and my folks can SERIOUSLY eat! LOL!) but I will partake in a VERY modified version of the traditional meal. Most of the cutting back won't bother me. The homemade dressing and giblet gravy - the two things I usually DIVE into head first? It's gonna be HARD to be good. But I WILL because one screw-up generally leads to more & I can't afford to gain back anything if I want to stay on track. That looks so good, tho'! I'm drooling over here. And, Ms. Sophie, you look BEAUTIFUL with long OR short hair. You KNOW you're my first-ever doggie love!

Dollhouse Progress

Dollhouse Quilt-a-Longer, Laura W., was stuck in Philadelphia for four days, riding out Sandy and her aftermath. "Luckly, I had brought my bathroom block with me," Sandy says.

Continuing with her theme, her grandmother's house of Laura's childhood, she created a charming bathroom block for her dollhouse quilt.

Tn

"My Grannie had one of those great claw foot tubs, but she had a new-fangled toilet with the flush on the tank," explains Laura. "After your bath, she would powder your tummy with her special bath powder and fluffy puff. I can still close my eyes and remember the smell. My tub is ready for dirty grandkids. I have made it like a pocket so they can jump right in."

I really love how Laura uses her imagination and her childhood memories to make her dollhouse blocks personal and unique. Don't you?

I found some time during this busy, busy month to work on my dollhouse too. Below is my sewing room, complete with a red sewing machine that I'd love to own. As you can see, I added a treadle to my machine, which isn't in the original pattern. I learned to sew on my mama's treadle Singer. And I've never used a machine yet that made as pretty a stitch as that one did. I wish I still had that Singer, but alas, Mama gave it away to my aunt after she acquired an electric portable.

SRSmall
As you can see, I still have to add the blanket stitching and embroidery details. The fabric for the quilt hanging on the wall was a gift to me from loyal blog reader and commenter Barbara Ann.  It was part of a group of mini-print fabrics from Barbara. And check out all the little giblets of fabric on the floor, just like my own sewing room.

Can you believe it's almost Thanksgiving? Time flies by so quickly these days that it makes me swirly-headed. I'm going to try something new this year. One of my quilting bee buddies, Martha, shared her recipe for crock pot chicken and dressing. I'm going to make that this time. Martha says it's good.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of year. I love the food and the family gathering. I love the season. It's just a special time when we can remember to be grateful for all that we have and all that we have had--without having to rush around and shop for gifts and decorate the house.

All you Dollhouse quilters, look for the next pattern, which will be coming your way soon. I have a lot to do today and might not get to it until tomorrow. But it's coming.

Would you be willing to share that recipe for crockpot chicken and dressing with your readers? Sounds wonderful. Thanks.

I loved how you put flies in your kitchen and not scraps on the floor of the sewing room. That's the way a sewing room should look - full of productive clutter.

I'd like that recipe too! Just me and my husband this year so it sounds easy and will leave more time for the important things like sewing.

I meant and NOW instead of "not" scraps on the floor!

Oh my how the description of the powder and puff brought back memories - I had not thought of that for years and years! And I watched my Mom sew on the treadle but only learned on her new electric. I would give anything for both her old machines!

I see you have posted the crockpot recipe - thank you!

My White Tornado Is Here

Tiny cup collection
This is my tiny tea cup collection. All my dusty do-dads will be spiffy when Cheryl is done.

I'm thinking of calling her Mrs. Clean. Cheryl, my wonderful cleaning lady, is downstairs removing dust and grime from all the do-dads, furniture, appliances, floors, and other surfaces. I, meanwhile, have been sewing away on the secret gift quilt. I'm almost finished with it. I should be able to deliver it to Lena to quilt by Friday, and I'm hoping she'll be able to have it quilted by the week before Christmas to give me time to bind it and add a label.

Sophie went for a grooming this morning. I had her there before 8:00, and she is already home. Usually when I take her for grooming, she has to stay all day. I was totally surprised when I got a call only about two hours after leaving her that she was ready to come home. I think we were the first in line this time. From now on, I'm taking my girl dog in early so she doesn't have to stay all day. She doesn't like it there, as you know. She goes to the vet's office for grooming, not Sophie Belle's favorite place at all.

Note to Dollhouse Quilt-a-Long Quilters: Tomorrow is show and tells day. So if you have anything to show, please email me a photo or photos to suscleve@yahoo.com and I'll post them here. I do have something to show this time. Not finished, but good enough to post. Hope someone else has made some progress too.

Thanks to Sandy and Lynn for offering to do a WalMart run for me to look for my block of the month background fabric. I received Sandy's offer first, so she's going to look. If she doesn't find it, I'll let Lynn know and she'll check out her WalMart. Thank you, ladies. What would I do without my blogging friends?

Color me green with envy about Cheryl's wonderful attitude and cleaning energy! I so need her help, too, but realize the commute would be too time consuming for her. Sigh! Things were much more managable here before emptying my Grandma's home and my mother's home. Am waiting for my heartstrings not to be tied to so much stuff.

Love your tiny tea cups! Are they pictured in a bowl or in a regular tea cup? I have one tiny tea set and never tire of rearranging the little cups, saucers and teapot. My weakness is the charm of David Winter cottages.

Cheers that you've nearly got the Christmas surprise something ready to go to Lena!! What's next on your creative agenda?

Hugs!

Busy Bee Day

Yesterday was one of those days when there's more to do than day to do it in. I started by attending the monthly meeting of my quilter's bee at my friend Barbara's house. Lots of fun, talking, laughing, and enjoying Barbara's great refreshments, including an apple cake to die for. Of course there was some inspirational show and tell too. I took along my "September" quilt top to show everyone, and one row of the secret quilt I'm working on. Below are some other projects that members are working on.

Bee1
Barbara shows us the pretty jelly roll top that she's making.

Bee2
Martha made this manly lap quilt for her husband.

Bee3
Cindy M. shows us some of her Civil War blocks.

Bee4
That's also Cindy M. behind this quilt.

Bee5
And Mary S. shows us the beautiful hand-appliqued center block of a medallion quilt she's working on.

After bee, it was off to find fabric to back my "September" quilt and the secret quilt. After scanning to fabric racks at Hancock's a couple of times, I came upon just the right fabric for each. But my search for background fabric for the January guild block of the month, didn't go so well. Hancock's had nothing and neither did JoAnn's. Back at WalMart in Leeds (which still carries fabric) I found a piece, and bought 1 5/8 yards, all they had, and I don't think it will be enough for all the kits. Anybody have a WalMart near her that still sells fabric.

  Fab1
This is the WalMart fabric. I was hoping to find the multicolored dot fabric like that I used in the background of my block. But I decided, after not being able to find it even online, I could settle for this paint spatter print. But I'm very much afraid that 1 5/8 yards will not be enough. Anybody know where I might find more of this?

Fab2
Beautiful backings. The gold polka dot will back the "September" quilt. The brown is for my secret Christmas gift quilt for someone special.

After grocery shopping, filling the car up with gas, putting away the groceries (Jesse was home to bring them in), and cooking a quick supper, I was teetotally pooped. I managed to stay awake long enough to watch "Castle," of which I barely remember anything. Then it was off to bed for me and the mutts.

This morning, there was a heavy frost on the lawn, the first one this year as far as I know. Coming in from all my travels yesterday evening, I saw a neighbor already had her Christmas tree aglow in her front window. I guess that all right, if it's your thing. But I'd much rather not mix the holidays up. I wish we could wait until at least after Thanksgiving to start celebrating the Christmas holidays. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. And these days it seems it barely gets noticed at all.

Well, there will be no Christmas tree at the Yellow House until after Turkey Day. And even then, Jesse is going to have to do the majority of the work. I remember how hard all the decorating was last year.

Love the various quilts from your bee meeting and I always appreciate the eye candy as it gets me in the mood to sew! Thanks!

What cute polka-dot fabric and the paint splatter fabric is a good alternate. Who made each of these fabrics? Knowing that would make it easier to find if it's out there somewhere.

The gold dotter fabric is just perfect for your September quilt. Great choice! I imagine the brown backing is just as perfect for the secret whatever!

I'm in total agreement with you about loving Thanksgiving and not being ready to decorate for Christmas until after enjoying the turkey. This year we have a whole week between Thanksgiving and the beginning of December, too.

Hope you're tucked in for a lovely, quiet, restful day today.

Hugs!

Ditto everything Barbara Anne wrote! (Well, except for putting me in the mood to sew. LOL! Any attempt at sewing on MY part is ALWAYS a total disaster!) I also agree re: Christmas decorating. I do it the day AFTER Thanksgiving. That's been my way of avoiding BLACK FRIDAY'S craziness. AND I serve Thanksgiving leftovers so it's a no cook day! This year I'll have upwards of 30 people for Thanksgiving Day - all of the Indian variety - and many will remain for the weekend. Those who stay will help me decorate. YAY! Hope a BUNCH of the taller kolas stay! LOL! Have a happy Wednesday!! This crazy Comanche LOVES you! You TOO, Barbara Anne!)

I Spy Swap

Squares

My very favorite type of fabric swap is an I Spy square swap. So when this one came to my attention, I naturally joined. I have all my 200 (4") squares cut, 20 from each of ten different prints. In return, I'll receive 200 4" squares, each one different. What fun!
I have a bin of squares from previous swaps--some 4", some 5". One of these days, I'll get into that bin and start making cuddle quilts. I plan to make some of them by just joining the squares in rows. But for at least one, I'm going to turn the squares into snowball blocks by adding triangles to the corners.
So many big plans for quilts. So many cats and dogs to keep me from quilting. Right now, Taco is standing on my shoulder with his very butt right in my face. Gotta go.

Love the idea! I have cut 5" squares from all of my Christmas fabrics, plus some reds and greens but have not sewn any together yet.

Rather than sew my squares (or blocks) in long rows, I lay them out, pair them up as they're positioned, and sew the pairs. Then sew the pairs into a sort of 4 patch, then sew two "4 patches" together. Soon the squares or blocks are in two large quilt top pieces and need only one width-of-quilt OR length-of-quilt seam to join the parts into a finished quilt top center. This is Mary Ellen Hopkins' method and it works wonderfully for me.

Just about 5 min. ago I decided I'd make a pillow for a Christmas gift. I plan on using small squares of mostly one color fabrics and just sew them into an 8"x10" or 10"x10" size, then border it to fit a pillow form.

Tell Taco to change shoulders every so often so the one shouler won't ache!

Hugs!

This sounds like a lot of fun. Where do you find out about these swaps?

On 11/11/2012, Linda said ...

I am laughing out loud and nodding my head in agreement. I identify with "so many big plans", so many dogs and cats, and the butt-in-face comments - LOL! My kitten will plop her most important self in the middle of any fabric I'm trying to cut, bat at the thread in the sewing machine, and if any of that fails to get my attention she will steal something off my table and start playing with it. All of this while my dog is whining and nosing my hand for me to pet him.

You could write a book that would entertain many of us animal and quilt lovers - I'm sure you have time for that. ;)

WHAT A CUTE IDEA! I love the different fabrics! Wish so much I could quilt. Sigh. I'm just hopeless. That's okay, tho' - I'll keep visiting you & YOUR pretty quilties! LOVE YOU!

Chilly Morn

The fibro monster loves this changing weather. He says it's the perfect conditions to wreak havoc on my pain sensors. Walking has become a chore that requires perseverance, a high pain threshold, and lots of things to hold onto.

And it's a conundrum as to how to deal with the falling temperatures. If I don't stay warm, the pain is awful. If I wrap up, wear warm clothes, or turn the heat up, I get so hot that I think I will expire. And the sweating begins. The only heat that doesn't bother me is a hot bath. And even then, once I'm out of the tub, the sweating begins.

Pooh on that old fibro monster! Pooh on pain! Pooh on sweating! POOH!

Sister Supper and Downton Abbey watching tonight. I think we're on Season 2 now. Season 3 starts in January in the states, and we're all excited. I'm making chicken and dumplings for supper tonight. Joanne is doing potato salad and veggies, and Ramey is supplying a Louisiana crumb cake. YUM!

Now, for your viewing and giggling pleasure, here are some cat pictures.

I realize that Sophie and Skipper have suffered short shrift vis a vis blog appearances lately. For some reason, Taco and Bella are just much easier to photograph. They strike much more photogenic poses.

But I'm going to have to get the doggies back on here more. Sophie goes Wednesday for a hair cut and grooming. After that, I'll make a point of doing some photography with my mutts.

Sorry to hear you've got the aching/over heated miseries by turn. Bother and bummer! I wonder if wool socks, jeans, and a sweatshirt would keep the right parts of you warm so you're not miseable. A couple of years ago I got several pairs of wool knee socks to wear with my Birkenstocks (not very tres chic, I know) and they are just the best for cozy toes. Try the Foot Smart catalog on-line if the thought appeals to you.

Bella and Taco have certainly scoped out the comfy places to lounge! Looks to me like Taco is eyeing those on screen appliqued bunnies!

Hugs!

He's visiting me this weekend but I deserve it because I was stupid enough to think I could scrub the house, then move furniture all around from room to room. Brilliant, huh? I am getting exactly what I deserve. LOL! Hope you feel a MILLION times better!

A Mennonite Quilter

PineappleI received some questions about this quilt that was part of my guild show and tell yesterday. Actually the quilt was made by our speaker for the day, Mississippi farmwife and quiltmaker Julia Graber. Julia and her sisters Polly and Barbara call themselves Three Mennonite Quilting Sisters.

Julia's family has a quilting tradition that goes back many generations. We not only got to see her "Pineapple Dresden Plate" quilt up close and personal, but also a wonderful slide show full of her quilts and those of her sisters and other family members.

This gorgeous quilt appears in the book Dresden Plate: New Quilts from an Old Favorite by Shelley Hawkins. Julia, as well as her sister Barbara have had several quilts to appear in this annual publication.

IMG_0218_thumb[10]
Julia Graber (back row standing, center), Mississippi quilt artist, treated members of Birmingham Quilers Guild to a program featuring her quilts and those of her family, as well as stories of her quilting family that goes back several generations. Pictured with Julia are the guild president, Vasha Rosenblum (seated, left) and several other officers and committee chairpeople who treated our guest to lunch at a favorite local BBQ joint.

Good morning Susan, I rec'd my journal and I am thrilled with every page. You have no idea how fitting the last page was being upside down for the best HA! moment. Seriously it was perfect, even if you didn't mean to do do it that way. Your pages are darling, as I am so much an animal lover. The tag and the pages really are awesome. I am in love with my entire journal. Thank you from my heart to yours.

The quilt you shared is so beautiful. Julia did a fabulous job on her quilt. I would have loved seeing them and the program. I know you enjoyed the program on Mennonite quilts so much. The Mennonites are famous for their beautiful quilts.

Have a wonderful day Susan.
Love, Jeanne

I'm Cool

I know, I know. Where have I been? Right? This, I believe, is one of the longest stretches I've gone without posting a blog entry. But everything's okay. I don't know what happened. I've been real busy, and time has just slipped by without a blog post. Not only have I had emails from some of you in the last day, but I even had people come up to me at guild meeting yesterday wanting to know if everything was all right.

I really appreciate everyone's concern and friendship; and I promise to try to be much more punctual in the future.

Meantime, here are some photos from Birmingham Quilters Guild's November meeting yesterday. As you can see, conditions for photography are not good in our meeting room. We've grown so large, that it's difficult to get to the quilts for all the happy members occupying the room.

TagMy friends Mary and Sharon. Mary was disappointed that her name tag was turned around in this photo. So she turned her tag around, and I took another shot. But this one was so much better of these pretty ladies than the other, that I'm using it instead, and posting Mary's name tag here. It is a very pretty name tag that Mary made. I don't blame her for wanting it to show.

In our guild, each member is encouraged to wear a handmade name tag. Not only does that give new members help in getting to know everyone, it helps us more senior (and forgetful) members put names with faces. And everyone who wears a handmade name tag also gets a chance each month to win a prize drawing.

It's nice to meet Mary and Sharon! What a wonderful idea to have guild members create their own name tags and to give out prizes for wearing them.

The pictured quilts are glorious eye candy, each and every one. I like them all and the BOMs but the one that has me gobsmacked (too much BBC!) is the amazing yellow and purple quilt. How was that one made?? Are they pineapple log cabin blocks and ...?

We're just in from voting and, like you, consider our one votes our patriotic duty, an honor, and a priviledge. I also hope EVERYONE who is registered to vote will go out and make your voice heard by voting today, too! Polls usually close at 7pm in your time zone.

Am glad to know all is well. I missed you!

What wonderful quilts!! I'll be up near you this weekend for a mini retreat. Just quilting girls having a good time. I voted early this year, so that duty is taken care of.

We used to have our own quilted name tags, but a few years ago the powers that be decided to just have printed nametags because they are easier for old eyes to read than the varying sizes and styles on the quilted ones.
