The Day After

A small group of us gathered at my house for our traditional Thanksgiving feast yesterday. Unfortunately, several couldn't be with us. Andy came down with some kind of crud, Buffy (niece) and her crew had other plans, and Cait and Kathryn, of course, are too far away in Providence to attend. But Jesse, Ramey, Jed, India, Joanne, and I did our best to make a dent in all the food we had prepared.

Everything was wonderful. The crockpot chicken and dressing (made with 5-egg cornbread) was delish, as was Huck's smoked turkey and a small ham (in deference to Jesse, who doesn't like turkey). We had a table full of sides, including a wonderful broccoli casserole by Joanne; a crispy salad full of heirloom tomato, cucumber, peppers, and all kinds of lettuce that Jed had put together; Ramey's signature redneck caviar; mashed potatoes, two kinds of gravy, Italian green beans, green beans with almonds by India, cranberry sauce, and rolls. I also made a chocolate cake.

But the piece de resistance, in my opinion, was Ramey's sweet potato pie, still warm from the oven when we cut into it. I so wish I had taken a picture of it because it was beautiful with cookie cutter pie crust leaves decorating the top. But the best thing about it was its taste. OH SO GOOD! I'm going to see if I can get her to make another one just for me for Christmas.

I have a refrigerator full of leftovers of every description. I do hope somebody drops by to help me and Jesse eat them.

On Friday, I took time to make a quick trip to Crestline to pick up the "secret" quilt from my friend Craig, who quilted it for me. I couldn't believe he had finished it so quickly. And it's beautiful. Here's a photo of the back to show Craig's quilting. I still can't show the front, of course. But you'll see it later.

Quilting

I'm very happy to report that all the four-legged occupants of The Yellow House are getting along well. We can finally let Sophie and the kitties in the same room together without restraining Sophie. They have even played and taken naps on my bed together. So I guess the rough part is over. Several opportunities for great photos have presented themselves. Unfortunately, my trusty Nikon was not handy during any of those times. I'm going to have to start keeping it nearby.

Happy Black Friday, everyone. I'm laying low today. I wouldn't go near a retailer on this day of mad consumerism for a basketful of gold monkey tails. I hate crowds, and I'm not too crazy about shopping. So this is a day I celebrate by staying as far away from Walmart, et al, as possible.

I'm glad you had a great time - and that Sophie and the cats are finally getting along! Do you think Ramey would share the recipe for her sweet potato pie?

Sounds like you had a nice time with your family and the food sounds delicious. I'm with you on staying home the day after. Can't wait to see the front side of that quilt. Somebody's gonna be really happy this Christmas. Enjoy your weekend.

My computer is VERY near its end, my company - who HAD decided to stay through the weekend - left a minute ago because they were called to a pow wow up North, I didn't get to eat ANY of the yummy leftovers today - and only 492 calories worth of Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. But I am content, comfy, and happy. Why? Because I have a good book to finish tonight, I watched the original CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN awhile ago, I have been crocheting like crazy, and I still am able to check my friends' blogs & say hello! YAY for the doggy & kitty truce! I knew Ms. Sophie was way too sweet to NOT accept Taco & Bella! Your meal sounded DELICIOUS. Tooooooo darned delicious! Sigh! LOL! Finally - that's the BACKSIDE of your quilt???? It's gorgeous! I REALLY can't wait to see the front side! LOVE YOU, and I'm with YOU about Black Friday! Not a snowball's chance in Hades!

Glad to hear those who were able got together to feast at your home yesterday. Seems Andy is missing too much of the fun and foods so hope she stays healthy for Christmas with its gatherings and lovely foods.

Craig must be an amazing quilter as that quilt back looks glorious! I look forward to seeing the front of the quilt when appropriate.

Cheers that the four-legged kids are playing well together at last!

We're with you in staying home on Black Friday. Shudder!

I'm intent on getting back to my Shade Cascade quilts and other Christmas gifts now that AMIL has her two Christmas wall hangings (check your email).

Hang on tight - we're headed for Christmas!

Hugs!

And a good time was had by all. The kitties, Taco and Bella, were singing an early Christmas carol. "Hark, is that chicken-and-dressing I see? Glory to the fried tur-kee!"
