Sisters Supper

Joanne, Ramey, and I had a wonderful supper last night. We ate until we could eat no more. Then Joanne went home and Ramey and I settled in for an episode of "The River," which was a bit lame in our estimation, and an episode of "Justified," which, in my own opinion, went too far afield. Maybe it's just that most of the interesting characters have been killed off, mostly thanks to our "hero" Raylan. Oh well, it was a great evening. Thanks sisters, for being my bookends.

Skipper and I dropped Miss Sophie off at the groomer this morning. I instructed the groomer to be easy with the clippers this time. Last time, she almost shaved my girl.

I had an epiphany during the night as to how to add my "Mama" photos to my "Through the Looking Glass" challenge quilt. I'll give details on Friday when I give my UFO Progress Report. And now, it's off to the sewing room to get started.

Happy Sadie Hawkins Day (Leap Day), everyone.

I envy the closeness you share with your sisters! My MIL lives in Canada and her sisters are in The Netherlands; every time she travels there, she comes back with stories of the bonds between the sisters and the wonderful times they share. My older sister is in heaven, and my younger sister lives in the Midwest. You are truly blessed to have your sisters close by and to be in a loving relationship with them!

What a wonderful photo you found to depict you, Ramey, and Joanne as you could have been had you had that many dogs when you were children - oh, and those charming dresses, too! So glad you three could gather to enjoy such a wonderful feast and enjoy each other's company, too. Sweet!

Hope Sophie gets just a trim today.

Today would have been my Mama's 24th birthday. She used to tease that she got a year older only every 4th calendar year when Feb. 29th appeared. She died in 2004 after having Alzheimer's for at least 3 years (but when did it really start?). I still miss her.

I look forward to seeing "Through the Looking Glass" and your new idea on Friday.

Hugs!

Maxine Says...

Source: sodahead.com via Karen on Pinterest

This reminds me of the day I found the neighbor boy's razor scooter lying in the driveway and decided, since nobody was watching, I'd give it a spin. Half the neighborhood came running when the thing went out from under me and I cracked my head on the pavement.

OUCH!!! Hope you didn't do any permanent harm to yourself when you fell (how long ago was that?) and that Maxine's wisdom will stick with each of us because it's all too true.

Don't you wonder who is watching from windows, behind curtains, or peeking when things don't go awry?

I'll bet your house is smelling wonderful or soon will be from the amazing fragrances of your dinner menu. Have fun!

Hugs!

One Small Treasure

SchnibbleAfter church yesterday, Ramey and I made a rather lackluster trek to our favorite thrift store. The place looked like some mad hoarding person had come through and cleared the shelves. There wasn't a lot of treasures to comb through. I did get this little Schnibbles pattern though, for a mere 35 cents. I have never made a Schnibble; I hope to make this my first one.

When I got back home, I finished watching the first season of "Downton Abbey." I have to confess that the series started out slowly for me and I wasn't sure I was going to become a fan. But I'm hooked now. I can't wait to get to into Season Two. The doings of those Granthams and their servants and relatives have captured me. I especially love Granny Grantham, Bates, Anna, and Mr. Carson.

Tomorrow night Ramey and I are getting together as usual at my house to watch the next episode of our very favorite tv series, "Justified." This time, we're going to do dinner too. I'm cooking a pork loin, baked beans, coleslaw, and cherry pie. Ramey is bringing the bread and vanilla ice cream. I think I'll invite Andy and Joanne to eat with us. Don't know if they'll want to stay and watch Raylan and the Harlan, Kentucky, bunch, but they might.

Sophie is bothering me to scratch her, and I'm finding dog-scratching and typing to not be compatible activities. So bye for now. Hope everyone is having a fine Monday.

Cheers for finding one small treasure that will most wonderfully fuel some future creative endeavors!

Wonder if many of the items that were missing were bought by someone having a yard sale and planning to ask a higher price for them?

Your menu for tomorrow night sounds wonderful and if I had the energy to start driving now, I could come, too! On the other hand, our freezer is closer and that's where we have some pork barbecue and the other ingredients are in the pantry. We just need slaw. Stellar menu idea!

I still haven't seen Downtown Abbey or Justified. What do I do with my time?

Do Sophie and Skipper seem to think that the weather will be different if they exit through a different door? Our cats seem to have that idea firmly fixed in their little heads and are so surprised and offended when the weather is the same no matter which door they use as their exit.

Hugs!

I'm about to start another little 12" block like the Santa Is Coming block but with pink pansy fabrics. It shouldn't take long and then it's back to UFOs.

I need a tutorial on how to navigate Pinterest and no, I don't pin.

Hope it's not as windy at your house as it is here. Why, yesterday we had 80*F with an afternoon storm that included hail and the noisy wind has been blowing hard ever since. I kid you not. What is up with that??

UFO Progress Report: Week 8

I haven't done much in the way of UFO busting this week. I did fiddle a bit with my "Through the Looking Glass" challenge quilt with Mama's photos that's on my design wall, but no sewing on it.

But look what I found in the box of fabrics and stuff that my good buddy John H. brought to me. There are about 40 of the hand appliqued heart blocks. Recognize any of those fabrics? I've seen all of them, I think--calicos from the 1980s.

Blog1

Blog4
A few of the blocks have embroidery and other embellishments added. I think these blocks are destined to become some kind of service/charity quilt for one of our guild programs--unless Andy wants it. I've been promising her a heart quilt for ages. But for now, they're another UFO.

Blog2
And look at this pretty thing. I forget what you call this kind of handwork. Some kind of embroidery, I think. It was popular back in the 70s and 80s, I recall. Always done on gingham. Anybody remember?

Blog3
I might make a pillow from it, or maybe even a wall hanging.

Below are photos of Blogless Barbara's UFO progress for the week. They are part of a block swap that Barbara took part in. "These blocks with borders will be hung in turn from the same hanger in my entry hall when their time comes on the calendar," she explains.

Tn-2

I'm very sorry that I'm so late this morning getting this posted. I started early, really. But I had so much trouble with either my internet connection or with Typepad, not sure which. Could not get photos to post. Lost my post a couple of times. So I finally decided to give up and go downstairs and have some oatmeal. When I came back, things seem to be working just fine. (Fingers crossed.)

Some of you asked for more information on the journal pages I posted yesterday for Shelia's "By Hand" journal. This is what our hostess Beverly is calling a Circle Journal. You maybe know it as a round robin or collaborative journal. There are 10 of us taking part. Each month, we receive a new journal to add to, and on the first of the next month, we mail it to the person listed after us on the list of participants. "By Hand" is the first one I've worked on. The project will continue until everyone has added art to each journal, then we'll get our journals back--in October, I believe. You might recall that I posted photos of my "Heart to Heart" journal a little while back. That's my Circle Journal.

Now below is Mr. Linky for all you Little Green Quilters who would like to post your blog links for our viewing and reading pleasure.

The embroidery on gingham is called chicken scratch. My mother did a lot of this back in the late 70's and early 80's. She made pillow covers from it and I still have several aprons that she embellished with the chicken scratch detail. I think that I have a couple of her instruction/project books somewhere in my crafting stuff.

Score on the goodies you found in the box John so kindly brought to you. I vote the hearts go to Andy unless she wants hearts from fabrics she remembers that are in your stash.

Sorry, I have no idea what the designs on gingham are called. My mother did some but only with cross stitch, using the gingham pattern as the grid.

As always, thanks for posting my photos!

Bother and bummer that it was so much of a hassle getting this to post properly. You solution of walking away for a while worked well!

Hugs!

Dollhouse Addition

Bench

Look what sister Joanne gave me for the Little Yellow Dollhouse. Ramey came over last night for our weekly get-to-gether to watch "Justified," and she brought this little bench and watering can that Joanne had sent me. They're just the perfect size.

Ramey also brought me CDs for Season One of "Downton Abbey." I've heard so much talk about that show, so I've decided to see if it's as good as everyone says. I'll start watching this afternoon.

But for the rest of the morning, I'm going to work on Shelia's "By Hand" journal, my current project for the Circle Journal round robin. I started my spread yesterday, and got a little done.

My friend John H. came by yesterday and brought me a quilting frame that some member of his family had left behind and also a big box of fabric scraps. I can't wait to go through the scraps and see what treasures lurk. John and I had a nice long visit. I've known John since elementary school, and it's always nice to be able to spend some time with him to reminisce.

Wishing everyone a peaceful Ash Wednesday and Lenten season. Are you giving up anything? Not me. I've found that giving stuff up hardly ever works. Instead I'm resolving to pray and meditate more.

Oh, "Justified", I've been so enthralled that I purchased all of Elmore Leonard's books which feature Raylan. I'm familiar with Mr. Leonard as I've read several of his novels including "Get Shorty" and since my husband is a "cowboy", I purchased Leonard's "Cowboy" stories. Little did we know that good ole Elmore actually wrote 3-10 to Yuma". Yipes. Oh, and I so agree with Nicole (which I do on many things). "Downton Abbey" is the best. The story is adequate but the costumes and sets will take your breath away. The hats made me crazy...I wanted each and every one. Why, I don't know. I never wear hats, but I just might wear the ones featured in "Downton" PLEASE REMEMBER HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND REMEMBER THAT WE LOVE YOU VERY MUCH.

Happy Birthday, A

I want to wish my daughter Andy a very happy birthday today. She's had a rough year in some ways but a great year in others. Se became a homeowner and adopted two precious kittens, for example.

My wish for you on your birthday, A, is for more of the good times and none of the bad. I love you, love you, love you, love you!

Note: The photo of Jesse and Andy is a few years old. I chose it because I love those sly, mischievious looks on their faces.

Weighty Matters

Monday
Vann's pottery and vintage scale

First of all, I have to make up my mind to slow down. It's like I'm in a race to do everything right now before time runs out. I think Vann's death got me in this mode, and it's just hard to get out of it. But I must, or time might run out before it has to.

Second, I have to get on some kind of exercise program. Skipper is such a pain to keep on the leash, that I have almost stopped walking the dogs entirely. I don't think we've had a walk in almost a month. I either have to start back walking, with or without the dogs, or what I'd like better is to get into a water aerobics program. There's one not far from my house.

Third, I have to get back on my healthy-eating program. Since my unfortunate episode, combined with several recent opportunities to indulge, I have drifted away from fruits and veggies and back into bad carbs again. Just this weekend, I had Fritos with my Santa Fe soup, a chicken biscuit for Saturday breakfast, rice for Saturday lunch, pound cake for Saturday dessert, and a small slice of lemon meringue pie for, I don't know, a snack I guess.

So those are my goals for this week--to get myself back on track, healthwise. Wish me luck. In addition, I plan to work on a UFO or two this week.

Happy Monday, all.

Good Morning. Mondays have a why of inspiring new behaviors don't they. I think their are so many of us that get off track and need to put effort in changing back to what we know is best for us. So happy for you that your incident in the hospital is behind you and you can start anew. I'll be sending all of my positive thoughts your way. Lately, I commented that you can NOT put a price on health. And, sometimes God has to speak "very loudly" to get our attention. You can do it girl!

On 02/20/2012, Nicole said ...

I lost so much weight last spring when I was really concentrating on eating more fruit. It was so easy, really. The water aerobics class sounds like fun too. Especially if it is close by your house, it will be easy to get there. Regarding Skipper and the leash issues, there are a couple of leashes you might try. One is a simple harness style, that will keep him from choking himself half to death as he pulls ahead of you. The other one will stop his pulling ahead totally. It is called the Gentle Lead and you can get it at PetSmart. It has a loop that fits over his muzzle. If he pulls ahead, it gently pulls his head back to the side, which he will not like--hence, he won't pull and tug.

On 02/20/2012, Helen in Switzerland said ...

Good luck Susan!
Yes you're right - looking after yourself has to be a priority and I'm sure you'll feel better if you do too! Everyone swears by water gymnastics - wish we had some near me and I would give it a try too!

On 02/20/2012, Barbara Anne said ...

I'll join you on your 2nd and 3rd goals as I need to so both. Don't think I could slow down any more or I'd be at a dead standstill! It's that spoon thing as you know.

That said, I do think Santa Fe Soup calls for Fritos, so perhaps it would be okay to keep one little lunchbox size bag in your cabinet for when you occasionally have that for lunch or dinner. AMIL is on a diet that she's on that has two free days every week when she can eat as she chooses, within reason. That just makes good sense and makes the rest of the diet easier to stay on.

Hope you can get into the water aerobics program and find someone in your neighborhood to walk with. It might be easier to walk the dogs separately, too. If Sophie is cooperative when on the leash, perhaps her walk could happen when you walk with your friend?

Happy sewing!

Hugs!

Hi Susan,
your post really struck a cord with me....the part about needing to take better care of myself. Today, it has been exactly one month since my best friend of life passed away (we met 48 years ago...first day of college). In the midst of tears and unbearable sadness, I have not been focused on self care. I was reading during my quiet time this morning and thinking about what she would want me to do....and that would be to NOT join her in Heaven anytime soon! I am committed to making healthier choices starting today....thanks for the encouragement!

I hear you. I am thinking about joining the Y to swim. I am not a class person, because I like to just focus on what I am doing and not visit with the ladies. There is a time to visit and a time to be quiet. I HATE to exercise so this will be a challenge. I have similar health issues as you with arthritis and Fibromyalgia, and a very low bad back after lifting a slab of marble around Christmas, to put on my counter top. Dumb, dumb move!!
I had a procedure Tue where they injected my way lower back with Cortisone...never, never have done that. It has helped 60% and will improve more by 2 weeks. So swimming will have to be my mode of exercise, as walking is still difficult. My legs feel like concrete!
So I will think of you when I am floating across the pool. hahaha

Great photos of a well attended and joyful conference, indeed! Thanks be to God!

Our weather today is sleet, snow, rain, more sleet, and possibly more snow to come. It's a good day to be tucked in with books and lots of fabric to play with.

Enjoy your well earned rest, my friend! Hope you kept some Santa Fe soup at home for yourself.

Hugs!

As our holy man, Larger, would say, "It's right to gather in a good way. It does the ones who gather a service because they help each other remember to do what feels right and to take that outside the gathering and live it." That was how I saw your gathering! And, see? Already you have taken it ouside your gathering & are living it and SHARING it! The pictures made me happy! LOVE YOU!

Slowly Finding Saturday

Happiness Hoop
Thrift Store hoop art

I have to go get ready for the second day of the Women's Spiritual Conference at church. I'm late already and still in my pajamas. But I'll make it by 10:00 or so. I had thought I might just stay home today and get some rest. But now I think, I'll start resting this evening after the conference is over.

Last night was a super kick-off to the weekend. Our dance ministry (including my beautiful niece India) was awesome; the voices of the praise team uplifted and inspired us all; Rev. Vickie's talk was calming after a week of cooking and running hither and yon; and the Santa Fe soup (including mine, which made it to the church without mishap) was excellent. Gotta go now. Have a great Saturday, everyone.

UFO Progress Report: Week 6 & 7 (2012)

Hoop Art

This doesn't really qualify as a UFO, but at least the idea is a carryover from last year. You might recall that at some point I was pondering what kind of wall art to use in my sewing room. I have a very long wall on one side, and right now it's bare. I had once planned to put together a bunch of quilt-themed jigsaw puzzles, mod podge them, and frame them for the wall. I got so far as putting together a whole bunch of puzzles, and mod podging some of them. But my search for thrift store frames for them proved futile. Just couldn't find any that would work that weren't truly expensive. So I sort of put that project on hold--or, more specifically, in the basement.

I really like the easier idea of embroidery hoop art--framing pieces of some of my favorite fabrics in embroidery hoops and hanging them on the wall--like this...

...or this:

So every time I have found some embroidery hoops for a good price at the thrift store, I bought them. So this week, I started hooping the fabric. And there it is. In the first photo. But I have a long way to go. I figure that wall will hold at least 100 hoops of various sizes. But I might use some other art (miniquilts, etc.) along with it.

Little Green Quilter Blogless Barbara finished this great little UFO this week (photo above). Of it, she says, "This 12" center was found in the book "Favorite Christmas Quilts from That Patchwork Place" (1999), page 93, and in that book it is called Twinkling Star.  I made it as a test block before making a similar block for a seasonal 12" block swap with quilting friends in TX.  I chose border fabrics months ago and even cut one of the two, but sewed them on just today."

Below are two more UFOs that Barbara has completed during the past two weeks.

Hi!

Love your hoop framed fabrics! What a great idea so favorite fabrics can be seen and enjoyed daily. My small sewing room walls are full with tall furniture, 2 wall hangings, 5 quilt posters from various sources, quilt trivets, quilt plates, small Celebration! porcelain quilts, a variety of framed pictures, and a few small plates. It's good the walls are white, because they are barely visible.

Thanks for posting my progress on the Valentine pink/red finish and the two little tops that were completed. The 3" fan quilt blocks were paper-pieced (eBay purchase) so the finished top is just 18" square. The Santa Star is 17" square.

I'll be back to visit the Little Green Quilters who link up.

Hugs!

Susan ~ I've seen hoops done this way and think it's really fun and makes a very nice display! I have zero wall space right now though.

Barbara ~ wonderful finishes! Love the pink and red! Did you use it for a table topper for Valentine's? It would be perfect. Maybe you can do more sewing if we get snowed in on Sunday! Our area of Virginia is 5 - 8 inches expected. I wonder if you'll get almost as much.

Hi! I've linked up twice...one is this week's post and one is last week's post.

Hoops with fabric are so cute. We made miniature ones with Christmas fabric to hang on the tree this past season.

Barbara has some lovely finishes. The Santa block is gorgeous, perfect framing for a quaint Santa pic, and I especially like the fan quilt blocks. Really great way to lay them out!

Wow, Barbara is on a row. I like your hoop
frames. I like the last picture layout, but I guess that wouldn't work if you have a big wall. Try to link up when I get home from work.

Great progress Barbara!

I think fabric framed in hoops is an excellent way to decorate you sewing room Susan! 100 hoops means 100 nails though, or are you planning to hang them in some other way.

Sorry to hear about your hospital stay. Glad everything turned out ok.
I have missed your blog. In Dec. my laptop would not power on so had to get a new one in Jan. This new one would not let me do anything but read messages, sometimes not even that. I live in area where dialup is all that you can get. Long story short, got a satellite.

So proud of Barbara and her sewing accomplishments...she inspires me daily! I have seen hoop hangings before like yours and find them very interesting. .,,,especially when vintage prints are used. My old farm house with ancient lathe/plaster walls would not do well with that many holes however. Hope you are feeling better!

Overbooked

Beans

Okay, I gotta quit piddling around on this computer (Pinterest is soooo tempting.) and get going on some tasks.

Before I knew I was going to have a major health scare, hospital visit, and very good reason to rest and relax, I promised to do a bunch of stuff. And it's all coming due this week.

I promised to help with dinner tonight for our women's Bible study group. I'm making baked beans, mac and cheese, and cole slaw. Then I also promised to make two pots of Santa Fe Soup for tomorrow night's kick off of our annual Women's Spiritual Conference. And I agreed to bake a hummingbird cake for a door prize.

Everything is set up and waiting to be made for tonight's and tomorrow night's dinners. But I only just now remembered the hummingbird cake thing. That will require yet another trip to the grocery store. I went back yesterday to get the things for the dinners and by the time I got home and put them up, I was totally wiped out. I did rest up enough though to make it to Ding-a-Ling (handbells) practice last night. I think I'm getting a little better. Only messed up a couple of times.

So toodle-loo, y'all. I gotta go cook!

Shoot! I need a nap after merely reading all of the cooking and baking you have ahead of you. Do you suppose you could turf the Hummingbird cake shopping list to some lovely relative who could go shopping for you while you cook up the dishes needed tonight?

I should have used your Santa Fe soup recipe when I made that dish in the crock pot on Super Bowl Sunday. The recipe I used was missing something and it wasn't very good.

I'll be sending you an email later today with my UFO progress for this week. I have actually been sewing!

Wishing you spoons aplenty.

Hugs!

Wha' Happen'?

HeartFebruary 14??? Valentine's Day? Already? Well, that snuck up on me. I had plans to make handmade valentines for family and friends. I guess that won't happen.

Sorry, family and friends. You'll just have to make do with the photo, I guess. I found that stuffed heart at Hobby Lobby recently marked down to 50% off.  Don't you just hate how Hobby Lobby has just about everything marked 30%-70% off so you can't use your coupon. I am convinced that they mark all that stuff up 30-70% to begin with so they can put up all those mark-down signs.

Well, anyway, it's a cute heart.

 Clothesline Art

Had a great time at yesterday's quilters guild meeting. Most of the guild members read my blog and knew about my unfortunate episode of last week. So I got lots of hugs and smiles and "glad to see yous." I love my quilting buddies!

I didn't stay for the program. The subject was leaf-pounding. I've seen the demonstration several times and tried the technique once (made a mess), so I left and did my grocery shopping instead. (I'd rather be pounding leaves, actually, but at least that dreaded task is done.)

We had oodles of show-and-tell. Below are photos of most of it. I might have missed a few shots as I was photographing during the actual show-and-tell presentation, and people kept yelling at me to get out of the way because they couldn't see.

This pretty crocheted chenille hat caught my eye, but I can't remember who the lady is under it.

That's all folks. I want you to know that, because of internet problems this morning, I had to create most of this post twice. I'm aggravated and tired, so I think I'll do some relaxation exercises before I start working in my sewing room. I have several projects I'd like to make some headway on today, but not with the attitude I have right now.

Happy Valentine's Day to all. May all your hearts be strong and true.

LOVE your Hobby Lobby heart (I SO miss Hobby Lobby) and reckon you can do that and better before next Valentine's day rolls around.

Thanks for taking us along to guild again. You do have an amazing group of talented quilters that you get to play with! That opportunity quilt is astonishing.

I'm feeling out of sorts today and haven't had the bother of a misbehaving blog to deal with. Even playing with 16 mini paper-pieced quilt blocks hasn't helped much. Wonder what's up?? Hope we both find our usual better attitudes and quickly!

Hugs!

Oh, how I DOOOOO love Hobby Lobby! I went TODAY. AFTER I spent a good two hours drinking coffee and visiting with the staff (all friends) at Barnes & Noble. Then I came home and made Fred Flintstone tostadas! LOL! A VERY nice Valentine morning! YOUR HL heart is ALMOST as beautiful & sweet as YOUR heart. I LOVE YOU, SUSAN!
