In Memory of Gene

What better project to work on during this time of year. In just a few days our country will celebrate its 235th birthday (I think that's right). And I'm well on my way to having a Quilt of Valor done for the new VA retirement home that's going up in Pell City, Alabama. Here's what I have so far:

QOV

There are two more horizontal rows in the floor under the design wall. They wouldn't fit on the wall.

Now that I see the top through the eyes of the camera, I think that very light square (4th row down, 2nd square from right) will have to go in favor of something that doesn't pop out so brightly.

This top is made from the Thimbleberries fat quarter collection that Maria gave me a while back. I can't wait to get it finished and show her. I'm going to dedicate it to the memory of Maria's husband Gene, who you might recall passed away a while back. Gene was retired from the U.S. Army where he had a distinguished career. Among other things, he served in Viet Nam, where he flew a Cobra helicopter.

I got the idea for this quilt while looking through the current issue of Simple Quilts & Sewing magazine. This is the quilt that inspired me, although mine will looking hardly anything like this one.

QOV2

I will applique stars on some of my squares, either every other one or, more likely, just a few scattered across the top. Dark squares on light blocks and light squares on dark blocks. And my stars with have rounded points instead of pointy points. For me, rounded points are much easier to blanket stitch smoothly.

Since this isn't a UFO project, I'm showing it today . But remember that tomorrow is UFO Progress Report Day and the first day for you Little Green Quilters to sign up for the Grab Bag Giveaway. If you're a member of the UFO Bust Challenge and aren't familiar with the rules of the giveaway, click on the link to read all about it.

Well done! I love the look of this quilt and agree that oh-so-light square has to go. I have a UFO center I'm thinking of enlarging to meet the needed size and squares may be just the shape to be the next addition.

Just what I need to do before(?) adding the 2 simple borders to the flannel quilt this is a Christmas gift, hand sewing binding on the Single Irish Chain, trimming the quilted Roses in Winter and doing its binding, and .... ad infinitum! Oh, the tangents quilters go off on are so delightful but that's how I create UFOs!

Hugs!

Not only will it be BEAUTIFUL (because it already IS) it's really a wonderful tribute to Gene! [And this will tell you how untrained MY wonky eyeball is: I didn't even NOTICE the bright square till you pointed it out. See? I should NEVER try to sew.] I think the addition of stars will really set it off beautifully & can't wait to see it finished!

Embracing My Inner Bat

Wow! Thanks for your responses yesterday. Lots of good information in there I need to sort out. I even got one telephone call from a Facebook friend with the name of a product I should try.

But the most helpful thing of all is knowing that friends care. And it looks like a lot of you know exactly what I'm going through. Maybe we just have to keep a sense of humor and let Maxine be our guide. I vow here and now to stop taking it all so seriously. So I'm a little batty. Life is still good. I love y'all.

Got a lot done yesterday after all, at least a lot for me. I sewed binding on one quilt, did three loads of laundry, and cut out all the squares for my Quilt of Valor for the VA retirement home. I even got the squares arranged on my design wall.

Todays plans: make Andy and Jesse a pot of chili, complete the binding of that quilt, do one more load of laundry, take the dogs for a walk (we missed yesterday's walk with all the rain).

Before I go, here are a few Skipper pics for your viewing pleasure. Skipper likes to sleep covered--either under his little doggie bed, under the covers on my bed, or snuggled inside a pillow case with the pillow. I have tried several times to catch him on camera inside the pillow case. This is as close as I've come. By the time I get back to the bed with the camera, he's usually out.

Glad to hear you're feeling well enough to get a few things done! I'm sure being able to accomplish some chores AND get binding on a quilt has to lift your spirits! Skipper is so adorable! How can you resist that little face??

Glad you feel a wee bit better. It has to be so hard dealing with that.
I love that Skipper sleeps in a pillow case. How funny? Do both dogs sleep with you. Our little one does. We tried having the Springer sleep with us but he want to sleep inbetween us on a pillow. He is shedding so badly. I think he sleeps better in his bed as well.

Keep feeling better, Susan. And, don't worry about the "brain thing". I have it, too, but I just let it go.

My little Murphy Brown used to sleep inside the pillow case, too. I sure miss her.

Well done on all you accomplished yesterday! Where do you do the hand sewing of the binding? I try to avoid cat hair which is impossible.

Love your new attitude about the fibro fog. Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly (or so I've read) so perhaps we need to lighten up, too.

Skipper it too cute! Does he get himself into the pillowcase? Love the s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g picture!

Hugs!

Our kitty also likes to sleep covered or at least sheltered. I caught her napping in my weed bucket outside yesterday but didn't have my camera in hand.

Skipper is so cute. I have a Skippy and he likes to sleep covered up too, 95% of the time. He's usually under the covers snuggled close to my daughter. I don't know how he can breathe down there!

You are a ROCK STAR! But don't get tooooo carried away, Ms. Rock Star! Do what you can comfortably do, then do a lil' extra. But don't OVERDO! As for Skipper, he is a hoot! I've seen cats tuck themselves away in the oddest places, but Skipper is the first doggy I've seen doing that! EXTRA CUTE! (Ms. Sophie, you KNOW I'm not forgetting YOU! You will forever be my first doggy love!)

Blessed, Warm Fog?

Brain-injury-fog
"Great achievements are accomplished in a blessed, warm fog."
--Joseph Conrad

Maybe so, Mr. Conrad. But I don't seem to accomplish much in the way of greatness when this fibrofog settles over me, which it seems to have permanently done recently. My foggy accomplishments are not having a clue where I parked my car, forgetting the word that I need to finish a sentence, forgetting the whole sentence, forgetting appointments, books I read last week, the names of people I know like my own family.

In fact, I'm finding it more and more difficult to even read a book. I guess that's the next thing that's going to be taken away from me. By the time I get to page 50, I often have to go back and jog my memory about things the author is talking about. Most times when I go back to a book after taking a break from the story, I have only a vague idea of what the book is about. I hate this. It's even more devastating to me than the pain or fatigue. I just hate it.

Usually writing helps. This morning even that isn't helping very much. I've been trying for a couple of hours to write this post and I keep getting sidetracked. (It took me several minutes to come up with that word, sidetracked, and even that's not exactly the word I wanted.)

And it makes me jittery. Like nervous, shaky, disoriented. I panic sometimes, thinking I must have alzheimers, but I don't. At least the doctors say I don't. Thanks God, I don't.

Saturday, when I went to Birmingham to pick up Andy from the hospital, my normal exit off the interstate was blocked with road construction. Well, that threw me into a tizzy. I couldn't remember which other exit would get me to St. Vincent's. I finally just took one and weaved my way around Southside until I saw it.

I think I'll go eat a fish now. Isn't that supposed to be brain food? Do you think it might help? I don't know why. Fish don't seem all that smart to me. But I guess it's worth a try. I don't have any fish in the house. I wonder if something from Capt. D's would work.

As for the mental fog, I think probably worrying about it contributes to the fog. When I try so hard to think of a name or something that I've forgotten, it just gets worse. Wish I knew something that would help overall. One thing that helps me do better today than I did yesterday, is about 12 to 14 continuous hours of sleep.

On 06/28/2011, Helen in Switzerland said ...

I'm sure the tiredness you feel must be a big contributor to feeling like this. When I'm tired nothing works like it should and I'm sure it must be way worse for you with your fibro. I don't know an answer except, sleeping, eating well and looking after yourself - but I'm sure you do all that anyway. So sorry that you're feeling like this and hoping it will pass and you'll get back to normal soon....thinking of you, hugs, Helen

Yes, eat a fish for goodness sake! Cracker Barrel has good fish; I thought it was just on Fridays, but India says they have it every day. Eat some! Also, get garlic capsules. Also. don't eat artificial sweetener...it's poisonous to brain cells, if you have any left to poison! Also, don't microwave you food or drinks, or head. Last, but not least, play Scrabble. It exercises the brain.

Yes, forgetting the name of something, much less someone very close to me, puts me in a panic - as if I'm standing on the edge of a "brink" and if I don't think of it, I'll fall off into an abyss. I usually do think of whatever it is, but those few seconds are freaky. Worry, stress, so many buttons to push - phone, remote, sattelite radio don't help - just having so much on our minds TO remember. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. I'm putting all my forgetfulness these days on "the move." So many things to cancel, change, start, find, do-I-pack, do-I-wait... My friend tells me to stop pushing - we push ourselves. It's okay to have down time. That's my other story; let's see if I can stick to it...

What really gets me is when I can't come up with so common a word as "tree." I'll flail about in my mind and look it and know it's just right on the tip of my tongue. T-R-E-E. And it eludes me...

For the driving tizzies, I recommend a Garman (or similar GPS). We use ours all the time, even when we know where we're going, just to avoid getting sidetracked (and lost) by ramp closures etc. Plus the portable Garmans are g-r-e-a-t for travel and rent-a-cars. (No, I'm not a dealer!!). Be well.

Big hugs! Sorry your feeling discombobulated when reading or when out and about. That's no fun at all and I understand because lupus has brain fog associated with it as does fibro. Bummer to the max!

Today we did the fruit basket turnover of rearranging our bedroom for the arrival of the new mattress set tomorrow. I am past whipped and will be going to bed soon since the mattress set could arrive as early as 8a. Who thought that time was a good idea?? I was given no choice.

Hope tomorrow is better for all of us!

Susan, I have the fibro and lupus fog. I used to be a smart woman. Now I stutter and forget what I was saying in the middle of a sentence. Trying to get sleep is hard too. The insomnia that comes from fibro is terrible. Sometimes you just can't sleep no matter how tired you are. Then add on all the pain...it's the pits. I hope you have a relatively pain-free week. Loved the pics from the beach!

Stop eating white sugar, corn syrup, Nutrasweet (aspartame) and wheat... and take MSM if you are not already..
I used to have fibro fog so badly..until I got rid of the above 4 elements of my diet..the MSM just was icing on the cake..
It takes a LOT of discipline to stick with it..but once you rid your body of them, you will feel so much better..it will take at least 3 weeks to start feeling better (you may have a flu like feeling for the first week - drink lots of water) and it takes at least 6 months to a year to get rid of the after effects of Nutrasweet..

On 06/29/2011, Sandy said ...

Suze is on the right track!!! It's FUNGUS people! Please google fungus and fibromyalgia (or whatever else you're suffering with) and you will be amazed at what you find. The thing that is supposed to break down the body after we die is eating us alive!! Once you stop feeding the fungus and start feeding your body what is needs instead of what it wants you will see improvement. Everyone's heard the saying "what you don't know won't hurt you" but that's not true. What we don't know IS hurting us and making life miserable for so many. A truer satement is "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten!". It's time to make a change and take our lives back, not just to suffer through to the end. Each day is a gift from God to be lived to the fullest. Let's make this the day we change!

When my fibro and lupus started over 20 years ago, I was living on the outskirts of a small village in Germany. The street from the village to my home was a straight shot, even though it did some winding. I was at the stop light, leaving the village, and I could not remember what I was doing, why I was at this stop light nor where I lived. At that time I was only 31! I got so scared! I still get days where I do feel like I'm on the outside looking in, not feeling like I can communicate at all. I will say that since I finally got on meds for my fibro, it's not as bad. I have noticed that when I get really stressed, the next day I am really bad. I try to watch what I eat in the way of additives. It does help some. I do agree that it sometimes makes me feel like I am losing my mind. Or just getting old!
hugs....

You poor thing! I have the same problem when my hormones are unbalanced. There are no doctors near me that practice natural medicine, and I don't want the synthetic hormones and anti-depressants my gyno wants to give me. So with lots of prayer and lots of research, I started doctoring myself. :) I have found natural progesterone cream helps balance out my hormones and this helps with my brain fog very much!

You will be in my prayers this day, friend.

I have not only my TICKET but a permanent SEAT on the Lupus/Fibro train. And, like you, I worry about Alzheimer's, but am assured that is NOT my problem. (I guess that means I'm just old & pathetically forgetful! LOL!) Seriously, I understand & relate to everything you said, Susan! But I do know this: the more I LET it affect me, the more it affects me. So be kind to yourself, don't worry about the temporary word-losses, and sleep and eat enough! Also BLOG, because we will all respond & you will at LEAST know you aren't the only one enduring this. Oh, and Ramey, for shame! You are extra NAUGHTY! But darned funny! LOL! I LOVE YOU, Susan!

I'm going with the aspartame as a culprit. I cut as much of that as I could out of my diet and it's helped me tremendously. It's in almost all processed foods so it's hard but you can try.

I also find that when I am tired, I am worthless. I would suspect you need more rest than you afford yourself.

I am really kicking myself for not binding those quilts when I had them. Next time, I will.

On 06/29/2011, Penny said ...

Debra and Sandy have the answers. Also, bad bacteria from pig and seafood scavengers wrecks our health. My husband was looking seriously ill, leukaemia, and the doctors were waiting to start chemo but we found a good naturopath and he treated the bad bacteria plus elimating sugar, wheat, and dairy, now he is nearly back to his old self. Aspartame is deadly, and corn syrup nearly as bad, so afford them.

Oh, silly! There was no need for you to bind those quilts. Your quilting was a HUGE help. Thanks and thanks and thanks.

Grab Bag Giveaway

Grab Bag

I've been promising a giveaway for members of our Little Green Quilters UFO Busting group, and here it is! If you are not a member of the challenge group, please read to the end of this post for something of interest to you.

The above photo shows but some of the goodies that the winner will receive. The bag will hold more. (After all, a grab bag should hold some surprises, don't you think?)

Here are the rules:

1. To sign up for this giveaway, you must be a member of the Little Green Quilters/UFO Bust Challenge. In other words, your name must appear in the list of names in my right sidebar under the "Little Green Quilters" logo. You must also have participated at least once since the beginning of the challenge. That is, your link should have appeared in Mr. Linky at least once since the beginning of the challenge until now. (For blogless busters, your must have emailed me your progress report at least once.)

2. For the next two Fridays, post your link in the Mr. Linky that will be displayed in my UFO Update post. You don't have to have made progress, but you must link. In your linked blog post, whether or not you have progress to show, you must post the Little Green Quilter logo button. (Blogless busters should send me a email asking to be entered in the giveaway.)

3. The drawing will take place on Friday, July 15.

Note to Non-Busters
I know that the majority of my blog readers are not members of the Little Green Quilters group, and I don't want to leave you out. So watch for another giveaway announcement after this one is completed. Everyone will be eligible to enter, not just busters.

Blog Backup
Thanks to some of your tips, I found that Typepad does offer a backup application, and I was able to backup the text of my blog onto my computer. I'm not sure that this is a foolproof method of protecting one's blog. Mary Lou says that she also had her Blogger blog backed up but that Blogger was able to do something that prevented her from accessing any of her information. I do feel a little better now though. I couldn't back up photos of formatting, but at least I have the words somewhat protected. Thanks for all your comments.

Mary Lou's Blogging Disaster

Mary lou One of my favorite quilters, and probably one of yours too, Mary Lou Wideman, has lost her six-year-old blog. Google won't let her into it to post, design, see her stats, or anything. Seems they've even given it a different name. So, bless her heart, she has started a new blog. She has lost many of her followers with the disaster.

If you are one of Mary Lou's blog followers, please click on this link to go to her new blog.

Mary Lou & Whimsey Too

And if you aren't currently one of Mary Lou's followers, let me tell you that you don't know what you're missing. Her quilts and creations are whimsical, joyful, and just plan fun to look at.

I've never had an opportunity to take a class with Mary Lou. But she's on my Bucket List. And just as soon as she holds a class near enough to me for me to attend, I'll be there. Now click on that link and go see what I'm talking about.

I have reasoned for a long time now that I need to back up my blog some way so that I would not lose it if I experience the kind of disaster that Mary Lou has had. But I don't know how to do that. Can anyone tell me, please?

Poor MaryLou! Love the quilters bent over their work :)

On Blogger you can export your blog from the settings tab to save a copy on your computer (or to an external drive or flash drive--wherever you like). I don't think that includes anything but text, however. There must be a similar feature in Typepad, I would think. I back up my blog monthly but probably should do it more frequently and to a flash drive instead of my PC!

HI Susan and sweet ladies- I have backup's for ebverything on my sites (Mozy is my favorite) BUT if Google takes your code and changes it, then you cannot get back in because they take the tabs for design, posting etc., and in my case even changed the name of my blog and my photos are gone from Picassa etc.
I have talked to a number of people who had this happen and I hired two different people to see if they could do anything (they would know how if it could be done). Nope. I just never thought it would happen to me. THANK YOU Susan and blog friends for helping me out.

Spoonless

Pink
Good Morning!

Again, thank you all for your well wishes for daughter Andy. She is waiting this morning for physical therapy to release her, and then I will go and pick her up and take her home...or to my house. I extended the invitation for her to stay with me for at least a few days. She didn't commit, which usually means, "Thanks, Mom, but I'd rather go home." She's even more of a homebody than I am. Jesse will be with her if she goes home. Not that he's all that great as a nurse, but then neither am I. Plus I'm pretty much pooped! Spoon drawer contains nothing but dust this morning.

I thought I'd lay a little pink down this morning and link to Beverly's Pink Saturday blog party. I haven't participated in Pink Saturday for a while and I've missed all the pinkness. If you too need a shot of that most excellent color, click on Beverly's Pink Saturday link this weekend and visit some of her partiers.

Thanks for the update and that I'm so happy that the surgery went well. Bless Andy's heart, post op nausea is the pits even when your neck isn't involved in the surgery. Bummer to the max! I hope she comes home with meds for nausea and pain both - just in case. It's better to have what you need at home, even if it's not needed. I suppose Andy knows that!

Will Andy come to your home for the first few days post op? Hope so as it's best she not be home alone for a week or so.

Big hugs to you and gentle get-well hugs for Andy!

No UFO Update Today

Andy at Beach5:00 a.m.: We learned yesterday that daughter Andy needs surgery on two ruptured discs in her cervical spine. Dr. N. scheduled her for this morning, so we'll be on our way in a few minutes to the hospital.

Please pray for successful surgery and an end to Andy's neck, shoulder, and arm pain. I had the same surgery in 1993 and was completely pain free when I came out of the anesthesia, so we're expecting good results for Andy.

Sorry to say, there'll be no UFO Update or Mr. Linky today. We'll catch up later. Thank you all.

Fogged In

Me2

Those of you who struggle with chronic pain/fatigue issues know that it doesn't take much stress to knock you on your hiney. Well, I had just enough yesterday. Today I'm in a fog.

Such a simple thing as grocery shopping has become a big hassle for me. By the time I've fought with the inevitable crowd at WalMart, filled my buggy, checked out, and loaded the bags into the car, I'm done in. Totally exhausted. But there's still driving home, lugging the bags upstairs with two doggies frolicking around my feet, and putting everything away.

That's what I did yesterday. Then I spent some time on the couch recovering while we had an awesome, heavy rain thunderstorm. That cooled things down enough that I took the dogs for the first long walk they've had in a couple of weeks. Then back to the couch to watch a movie I've been wanting to see on PPV, "Unknown" with Liam Neeson.

The phone rings. My poor sister Ramey has had a tire blowout not far from my house. With her spare being flat as well, she needs me to come pick her up and take her to get her tire fixed.

Well, it being somewhere in the neighborhood of 7:00 p.m., every person in town who has the equipment and the know-how to fix a flat is closed and not answering their phone. We drove all over town, with Ramey going into some pretty questionable places to try to find a fixer. No luck. So she had to leave her car in someone's driveway until this morning. We're going to start all over again on our quest to have a flat fixed as soon as she calls me, which I thought she would have done by now.

My brain is foggy, my body hurts, and I feel like I've run a race with a greyhound. And Sophie and Skipper are looking at me as if to say, "What are we going to do today, Susu?" Bless their hearts. They're going to be hugely disappointed.

Do you have grocery delivery in your area? It may be more expensive but might be worth it to you.

On 06/22/2011, Helen in Switzerland said ...

Hi Susan, so sorry that you aren't feeling great. Debra got in before me with her comment about grocery delivery. Since my kids were little I've treated myself to a grocery delivery every couple of weeks - all the heavy stuff and 'basics' - boy does it make a difference - it might be worth looking into. Over here in Europe it doesn't even cost much - and boy is it worth every penny!

On 06/22/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

Bless your heart! I was also going to suggest grocery delivery so clearly great minds think alike! I wish there was an easy solution and I do hope grocery delivery is available in your area.

Sorry Ramey's flat tire couldn't be fixed last night despite the time and effort you two put into finding help.

Sophie and Skipper will have to be happy in with a backyard frolic today while you're busy and tired.

Heat index forecast is 105*F for here today with a chance of storms. Whew!

Be good to you!

Hugs!

I think it would be a great ministry for any church anywhere to have the young people volunteer for chores such as you need done. They're out of school for the summer and lots of time on their hands (since jobs are so scarce) and a little pocket change would probably be welcomed. Grocery shopping, lawn care, cleaning, walking the dogs, etc. the list goes on and on. There are lots of good kids out there who would be happy to help if they know they are needed. Maybe give your church a call?

On 06/22/2011, Beverly said ...

I wish I could help. We have grocery stores here that offer personal shopping for five dollars. They shop your groceries, and you pull up for them to put in the car. We've been doing it for years, and they do a great job. I just wish they would start to deliver.

Try to get some rest.♥

Good morning Susan. Sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. The comments before mine gave great advice on grocery delivery. All I can add is be extra kind to yourself, don't push, and relax all you can. Bless you. Pat McDonald

On 06/22/2011, CarlaHR said ...

Indeed grocery delivery (if it is available in your area - although probably not from Walmart) is the way to go. As I don't drive I usually do a big shopping every two weeks and have it delivered. Even when my husband goes with me in the car we still have it delivered so we don't have the hassle of transporting it from the car to the elevator to the apartment. In the summer it is much easier as I cycle to the shops and have baskets in which I can carry quite a lot but again when it is a big order, i.e. bulk items, bottled water, etc. it gets delivered. Hope the tire problem has been solved and that you can relax and recover.

On 06/22/2011, Sherry from Alabama said ...

Bless your heart, Susan! I don't have the pain issues, but I can sympathize with you on the foggy brain. Just going grocery shopping has been a challenge for me lately too. I drive to the next county to a small grocery store, Aldi, where there is only one brand of most things. My only decision on peanut butter is crunchy or smooth. That way I don't have to figure out which item is the best and which is the cheapest, etc. The simpler I can keep my shopping, the less tiring it is for me.

I also thrive on my household routines. I actually have them written out in a little notebook and during my foggy spells, I have to look at those notes, even though I've been doing them the same way for ages.

The heat has been a challenge to me lately too. We got some of that wonderful rain you talked about and things are much cooler here in north-central Alabama today.

You are in my prayers today, friend! Be kind to yourself. Prop your feet up and enjoy the cooler weather!

Susan, I can completely relate! I have Scleroderma (a condition like Lupus) and the number one trigger on a long list for flare ups is "STRESS". You figure that enough stress can make a perfectly healthy, young, fit person physically ill and then throw into the mix, the age factor, having a disease that can put you in bed in the blink of an eye without any notice and there you have it...total fog of pain and fatigue. I have spent the last two days in bed due to the pain and fatigue of a flare up caused (I'm almost certain) by the stress of a fast and furious trip to the Grand Canyon to spend some time with my brother. Riding in a car except to eat and go to the hotel room to sleep. I just can't keep that sort of pace anymore. Then we of course also have two little furry babies that need our time too. Anyway, I'm sorry, I didn't mean for this to be about me, it is about you and my understanding what it feels like to finally get home and have that phone ring with even the tiniest stressful event. I truly hope you get some rest and get past this quickly. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Gentle Hugs...

Oh, I'm so sorry! I recently had some back problems, and my chiropractor recommended a product called Formula 303. When I was looking up information on it, I came across some comments from people with fibromyalgia who had greatly benefited from this. I don't know if it would help you or not, but it's all natural and it isn't very expensive.

I hope you get to feeling better soon.

Amazon did have groceries, tho I'm sure in bulk/staples. Don't know if they still do. Maybe a high school student trying to make extra money for trips, gas, etc could help you out. I hate to even say senior citizens group (smile) but they may offer such service. Altho I have no diagnosis of fibrosis, what you describe sounds so similar to how I feel. Really don't like big shopping trips to Walmart. Just too much loading & unloading. Where we are moving to has steps, too, and that problem has to be made better/safer if possible. Hope Andy gets along well-you also take care.

The Longest Day

459200162_80fb80238c
Happy Summer Solstice

If you know much about me, you know that summer is not my favorite time of year. I spend each autumn, winter, and spring dreading the heat and humidity that are inevitable in this part of the world in summer.

But I always look forward to Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. Why? That's the day that the earth tips back the other way. Days start getting shorter and, eventually, the air will cool and Nature will become my friend again.

It's also the night when one can light a bonfire and dance around it naked if one desires. Not me. Bonfires just make things hotter, even with your clothes off.

Happy Summer Solstice to you, too! I love this day for the same reasons you do, the anticipation of shortening days and longer nights.

I planted two pots of purple cone flowers this morning and thought I'd die from digging the two holes in that humid, post rain sunshine. One glass of ice water later and I think I'll live. Bonfire? No thanks!!

Hugs!

Dancing around the bonfire naked?!?! Yikes, I would probably set a fire and then the fire department would show up..,.I would be embarrassed and they would be appalled to see my naked body. Thanks for the laugh! (I've haven't been missing....just very involved with helping my dad.) Love reading your blog! Pat Mc

Chicken Scratch

Chicken Mosaic
Chicken quilt blocks from my Flickr Faves

1. chicken applique, 2. Chicken Potholder, 3. chicken quilt block tutorial #8, 4. Barn Chicken (I think) detail, 5. Chicken block for Sunflowerquilts, 6. Chicken Little, 7. Fat chicken quilt, 8. Quilt

Since I've accepted the office of Block-of-the-Month chairman for my quilters guild for next year, I've had quilt block designs running around in my head lately. One of the blocks I want to offer will be a chicken block (just because I love chicken blocks).

Chicken 3 I would love to be able to use this pattern that I showed you a while back, the one I plan to make for my kitchen. But of course it's a copyrighted pattern (American Quilts for the Home magazine), so I'll have to come up with something original or something in the public domain to be in compliance with copyright laws. So I'm gathering lots of chicken blocks for inspiration, then I'm going to try creating my own pattern.

Here are a couple of designs I found on Facebook from Marcey's Quilt Blocks. You can find her charming designs for sale here on Ebay.

Chickens

Chickens2

I have other designs in my head as well. I want to do a heart block for February, maybe something based on the woven heart baskets that we used to make when we were children. And I want to do some of those modern/urban-type simple blocks with squares and rectangles.

I want to have all my block plans at least roughed out for each month and have them in a binder by the date of the first board meeting in September. Sort of show everyone that I'll be a good chairman. It has been a while since I've held a board position, and there are lots of new people now who don't know me as well as the veterans do. I was president of the guild in 1995-96, and I've also served as newsletter editor, cuddle quilts (charity children's quilts) chairman, and retreat chairman. But nothing in the last ten years or so.

I finished hand quilting "Let Freedom Bark" last night. Now all I have to do is bind it. Maybe I'll have that done too by Friday when we have our next UFO Update.

I also have a plan cooking for a Quilt of Valor for the new Pell City veterans home that's under construction. Remember that packet of beautiful fat quarters that my friend Maria gave me? This plan involves those fat quarters.

So with all the quilt plans I have in the works, you can see why I was a little anxious to get home from vacation. I took the hexie flower project with me, but didn't do a stitch on them. So I'm behind and pushing deadlines. And there's laundry to be done, of course. So I'll say goodbye for now and get to getting.

Cute chickens, one and all, but I think I like the applique ones that are nicely rounded! Will eggs, whole and fried, be in the running for a block or is that twisted? Happy imagining!

Good idea to have all of the blocks planned and ready by the first meeting of autumn.

I may get Roses in Winter back from the quilter Thursday and am excited about that. This means I need to get myself in gear to get the flannel top together and borders on, like now.

Hugs!

Homebody Hoosie*

Beach dogs

I love the beach and having nothing to do but enjoy family, surf, and sand. So why do vacations wear me out? Why do I spend most of my time on vacation planning what I'll do when I get home? Why do I count the days till I can sleep in my bed, sew at my Bernina, lie on my couch and read, walk through my neighborhood and say hi to friends? Just call me Homebody Hoosie. (*Hoosie [Suzie] is what my little sister Ramey called me when she was first learning to talk.)

I am so glad to be home. But I'm not the only one. Jesse came back two days early, and Andy and I came back a day early. We had vacationed sufficiently.

But we did have fun. Andy and Jesse spent some quality time sitting in the sand and having some mama-son talks that they hardly every have time for at home. I finished one book and read half of another one. I also visited one of my favorite quilt shops, Quilting By the Bay in Panama City, Fla. Here's what I bought, not a lot as you can see.

QBTB2

QBTB1

I'm going to make the jack-o-lantern, using the Fusible Quick Grid method, to hang on my door during October. I've never done this method, and it looks interesting. I'll probably find that it would have been easier to just sew the squares together the regular way, but we'll see.

***

Sophie and Skipper were good dogs on vacation, but I can't say that they really enjoyed it. I think they were both just glad to be home in familiar surroundings. Sophie has been on vacation lots of times but, as far as we know, this was Skipper's first vacation, and he was a smidgen nervous the whole time. I believe he feared we had ulterior motives for bringing him so far away from home. He was not a good traveler either. He insisted on sitting in my lap (Andy did all the driving) all the way down and all the way back. And he squirmed and wiggled the whole time.

Beach Skipper
Skipper prefers to remain on guard, just in case someone tries to leave him.

I was so exhausted by the time we got home yesterday, I didn't unpack anything or put anything away. I've done a little of that this morning, but still have some more to do. So I'll say toodles for now. But first, here are a few more beach photos.

When I saw the picture of your Skipper, a little pang hit my heart. My all-time favorite dog was a little rat terrier that looked so much like Skipper. His name was Fonzie. He was just the smartest little dog, and a wonderful pet. Sadly, shortly after we moved to Alabama from Kanssas, he got out of our fenced-in backyard (a worker left our gate open), and he was killed on a busy nearby road. It was such a devastating time for our whole family!! If I ever get another dog, it will be a rat terrier.

Will be 3 hours nearer my sister in a few weeks as we're moving back to NE Mississippi! I'll be ready for an October visit after all this moving. What a job! I was dreading for it to be in July; just trying to time my outdoor time when it is cooler. Huh? Cooler? Did I just say that??

Nighttime at The Yellow House

BLOGGER NOTE: Those of you interested in making quilts of valor for the Pell City veterans home, the measurements are 60" x 90" The only other requirement Margaret gave us was not to make a replica of the flag. It's ok to have flags in your quilt, and of course red/white/blue color scheme is fine. But I think the guys just don't want to sleep under a flag because they'll do that at their burial. Thanks.

My schedule has been turned all askew today. I don't think I've posted a blog entry this late at night since, well, ever. After guild meeting this morning, I hurried home to get ready to leave bright and early in the morning for the annual family beach trip. Started doing laundry and looking for my bathing suit (which hasn't seen the light of day since last year's beach trip.

Shortly after that, Jesse came in with his laundry. I sent him off to buy some new bathing trunks while I finished his laundry (and mine). Then Andy came by after work to pick up her laundry and get driving directions to the condo. She had planned to come down tomorrow evening after work. I was to be going with Jesse.

Then sister Ramey came in with her beautiful white quilt to wash (it's too big for her washing machine). While we were washing it, Jesse came back in and changed all the plans around. Now he's going down in the morning with his friend Robert, and I'm going with Andy when she gets off from work. We had already transferred a bunch of stuff to Andy's car that now had to be transferred back to my car--and I just forget why all this transferring back and forth was necessary so it doesn't matter.

But at least I won't have to be ready to leave at the crack of dawn, and Andy won't have to drive down by herself. All is well that ends well. I sure hope all ends well.

Little Green Quilter Lynn (left) and her mom Nancy

Guess who I met in the flesh at guild meeting today. You'd never guess in a million years, so I'll just tell you. Our very own Little Green Quilter Lynn was in Birmingham visiting her parents. Her mom is a longtime friend and member of Birmingham Quilters Guild. At break, Lynn came over to my table, and as soon as I saw her I recognized who she was. We had a good old hug and a talk and I snapped a shot of Lynn and her mom Nancy.

We welcomed a wonderful speaker to our guild meeting, a lawyer named Ed who spoke to us about copyright law. A lot of it I already knew, but I did learn a lot too. Ed is an artist and the husband of a quilter, so he was very familiar with our medium. He was an excellent speaker, very knowledgeable and interesting.

Below is a sampling of some of our clothesline art today. Then I have to get in bed. I'm pooped.

Margaret Rose, a member of Friendship Quilters Guild of Pell City, Alabama, and Alabama coordinator for Quilts of Valor, brought some of the quilts that have been donated for the new veterans retirement home that is being built in Pell City. Margaret needs 180 finished hospital-bed-size quilts by the time the home is completed in just a few months. I'm going to do my best to get one to her. It will have to be a simple pattern, but I think I can get it done. If you're interest in helping Margaret out with this project, let me know and I'll give you the info. Below are a couple of the quilts she brought.

There will be no UFO Progress Report this Friday. We'll catch up with everyone on the following Friday, June 24.

Oh yeah, some of you asked if I took the photo of the Sophie cloud. I didn't. I borrowed it from a friend's FB page.

Hi Susan ~ how very fun meeting Lynn! I hope you have a wonderful time on your week away...be safe and relax. Now that you've given all the little green quilters a week's reprieve, you should have lots of linkies the next Friday, right? :) I hope so!

What great quilts!! I love one and all.

Are there measurements for "hospital size" quilts?

How great to meet Lynn IRL and I enjoyed "meeting" Lynn and her mother!

Have a marvelous time at the beach, in the water, in the sand, and with your family! Sunblock! Citronella candles! Calamine lotion for mosquito bites! A broad brim hat!

Hugs!

Where Is Everybody?

SophSat

All right you UFO-busting Little Green Quilters, where are y'all? I know summertime is a busy time for everyone. And I know that the heat often makes for lethargy and disinterest. But Mr. Linky is very lonesome. Only two people linked up this week so far.

Remember you don't have to have actually made progress on your UFO list to post your link. You only have to have a blog post to link to. So come on, people, link up!

Thanks for your comments on the Sophie 4th of July Quilt. Cathy, with her Yankee Doodle Doggie comment, reminded me of something we used to call Sophie. Since Sophie's birth town is Warwick, New York, we often call her our Yankee Doodle Schnoodle. So that's another idea for a quilt title. But I'm still leaning toward "Let Freedom Bark."

I think it's probably time for a giveaway to kick this UFO Bust back into action. We're almost halfway through the year, so this is a good time. I'll be beachin' it next week, but when I return I plan to announce the Mid-Year Little Green Quilter Blog Giveaway. So don't miss out.

PigSat I'm linking up to Beverly's Pink Saturday Blog Party today. And then I'm going over there, virtually speaking, to get a big dose of pink. I recommend that you do the same.

The little pig bricklayer painting was created by my sister Ramey many decades ago. My daddy was a bricklayer, and my mama was a pig collector (not live ones), so I guess that's how Ramey got the idea for her painting.

Cute painting! You and your family are so talented in all sorts of creative ways! What fun! No wolf will blow this Little Pig's house down!

I've been cutting flannel squares and arranging, re-arranging them ad infinitum this week. The quilt they're part of is a Christmas gift that I decided to make and have completed now. I've done the wait until October and wait until November to start such gifts and don't recommend it. Could I have learned my lesson?? I'll be back to my UFOs when this simple top is together.

Stay cool!

Hugs!

UFO Progress Report: Week 23

Sophie DO

Here's Sophie in her summer do and ready to take on this Alabama summer. Now if only a haircut would do that for me. I'm counting the days till October. I hear tell that parts of the country are receiving a little relief from the heat, but not here. And it's not just hot; It's dry as a sodie cracker, with air quality alerts and no-burn orders and such. My very least favorite kind of weather.

Last evening, while I went to Trussville to retrieve Sophie from the groomer, Skipper spent some time with Andy and Jesse and Lucy (A & J's kitty cat). Andy told me that Skipper couldn't get Lucy to run from him and he got all frustrated. He's used to John's cats next door who scatter when he charges. Lucy, who is the oldest cat in America, wasn't having any of his foolishness.

All right now, on with the progess report. Remember this, #15 on my UFO list? It's listed as "4th of July Sophie," but I think I'm changing the title. Not sure to what yet. (Maybe "Let Freedom Bark"?)

Fourth of July Sophie

This week I added borders and started the basting process. I'm going to hand quilt it and try to have it ready for my front door in time for Independence Day. It's a small quilt and won't have a huge amount of quilting, so I think I can do it.

Sophie Quilt1

In other quilty news, I now have 70 hexie flowers completed. I think that's about half of how many I need for the table topper. At one time I was thinking I'd make enough for a full-size quilt, maybe even big enough for my king-size bed. I have since talked myself out of any such notions.

OK now, here comes Mr. Linky. All you busters, please add you links so we can pay you a visit.

The heat has been making me think about a shorter "do"...maybe cut off just enough to get the hair off the back of my neck.

On 06/10/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

What a cute Sophie wall hanging!! Methinks "Let Freedom Bark" is a perfect title, but you're as good at titles as you are at joyous creativity so I leave it to you.

Sophie looks as if she wonders what happened to her curls!

No UFO progress for me as I've been sick off and on all week.

It's hot and dry here, too, and we're thinking of doing a rain dance. Our "90% chance of rain today" dropped to a 40% chance of "scattered storms, especially in the evening." Bummer! The last 3 days the temp has been near or just over 100*F and that's just not right for June in Virginia. TGFAC!!!! That's Thank God for air conditioning!

Hugs!

Sophie looks like she's telling Skipper he'd better NOT make a comment about her haircut or else...he could find himself bunking with Lucy for the summer!!

Oh! Ms. Sophie, how BEAUTIFUL you look in your new Summer 'do'! And ALSO in your quilt! Susan, what a great quilt! Whatever you TITLE it, I call it AWESOME! And weather? We are twins to YOU here in Houston. Disgusting time of year, isn't it? Yesterday afternoon I told Ray, "You know I would SWEAR I hear rain." He peeked out the window & - whoa! - we were having a real downpour! I hurried to open the blinds & curtain in the room so I could WATCH the rare sight. And - bingo - by the time I got the curtain open, it stopped. Ray said I jinxed it. LOL! I NEEEEEED AUTUMN!

On 06/11/2011, Helen in Switzerland said ...

I love Let Freedom Bark! What a fun quilt to hang on your door. It will certainly raise some smiles!

On 06/11/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

WaaaaaaaHHHOOOOOOOO!!! Thanks be to God!!! This evening it RAINED for two hours, an intense, lightning and thunder, cats under the beds downpour!!!!! Joy! If not for the thunder and lightning, I'd have been outside dancing in it.

Still smiling.... even tho all of outdoors will be a sauna tomorrow....

Wishing enough rain for everyone who needs it, minus the sauna, if possible.

Hugs!

Hi Susan ~ just checking in on Sunday evening. Love the Let Freedom Bark!! So bright and colorful. I didn't get anything on UFOs done this past week...too much going out and having lunch with friends. It was all good though, and I'm psyched to buckle down at the machine this week.

Quilts, Quilts, Quilts!

It's going to be a busy day for me and Sophie today. She has an appointment for grooming (she doesn't know it yet), and I have to get the car washed and start getting ready for the annual family beach trip.

We still haven't heard from our regular groomer, Diane, about the results of her surgery, and the groomer at our vet's office was booked up for half the summer. So we're having to go to PetSmart in Trussville. Our vet gives them a good review, but I never like to go to a new groomer. But it has to be done.

I still have photos in my quilt show folder, so here are a few more for your viewing enjoyment. Hope you aren't getting tired of seeing these lovely quilts.

Never get tired of looking a beautiful quilts. Love the pieced puppy quilt. Anyway you can find the pattern and let me know where to purchase it? I have two grandsons that would love this quilt. I tried looking on the interent but couldn't find this pattern.

What beautiful applique, lovely quilts, and delightful creativity! Don't you wonder what that puppy is listening to? The view looking down on the quilter's head, hands, and Celtic project is an amazing quilt. I agree with Thomas Jefferson's words on the 5th quilt: "I cannot live without books" either!

Get tired of seeing quilts??? Surely you jest!!

Hope Sophie gets a good trim at PetSmart and that you're pleased. Hope Diane is on the mend.

A beach trip?! What fun.

Hugs!
