This Was No Fun

Black1

Working on the triage principle, I put the baby quilt on hold yesterday (although the intended recipient was born yesterday, so now I'm even more in arears). The youth director at my church called me and asked me to make this black thing (that I'm still not even sure what its purpose is). And since he needs it tonight, I had to hop right on it.

The instructions I had to work with were these: make a black drape to hang from the ceiling of the Family Life Center auditorium, 29 ft. x 93 in. Something about showing movies, but I don't think he wants to show the actual movie on a black screen.

First, I had to make a trip to Hancock's to get the fabric. I was afraid cotton would be too flimsy to make something that large, so I bought 20 yards of black fleece. And that's what you see filling my sewing table, floor, ironing board, etc.

Black2 While constructing the thing, I had a couple of near disasters. I had set up my ironing board in front of my sewing table and placed my ironing table on top of the ironing board. The table was built to fit onto an ironing board. It's wide and long and will accommodate large pieces of fabric, albeit not as large as the one I was working with. And it's really heavy.

Black3

As you can see, the doggies found this soft fabric a wonderful place to play. I finally got them to stop playing on the fabric and was sewing along when KERBLAM!!! the sewing table tipped over with a great thunk onto the floor. I jumped up to look, and saw my little Skipper crawling out from under a great pile of black fleece. The large heavy wooden table had just missed him--thank God.

Later, I started down the stairs without turning on the light first and stepped on Sophie. I caught myself before I had completely squshed her--or fallen down the stairs, but she was distrustful of me the rest of the day, and I was a bit distrustful of myself.

The third victim of the day was me, even though I didn't fall down the stairs. I used more spoons than I had in my drawer and was more exhausted last night than I've been in a long time. My arms are still shakey this morning. Twenty yards of 58" polar fleece weighs a ton, or something like it.

But the black thing is finished, and I'll be delivering it today--if I can wrestle into the car. Then maybe I can work on something fun for a while.

My poor lil' Susan! What a DAY you had! I hope THIS one is seriously better! And why on EARTH did someone volunteer YOU to do that big old project? I LOVE you & hope you get some rest, some FUN time, and some cuddle time with the doggy-sweeties!

OH! Poor you and I have to agree that I'd never agree to a project that involved huge amounts of fabric, much less fleece that has to be sewn. I don't even make king size quilts for that reason.

I think it's fair to call the youth director to come pick the fleece screen up from your house.

If you have an Rx for Flexaril, do consider taking one.

We have laughed for decades at pets who love to be a micron off the floor by lying on whatever is on top of the floor. To have that "higher"surface be cuddly fleece must have been sheer delight for Sophie and Skipper!

So thankful that Skipper didn't get squished, that Sophie didn't get smushed, and that you didn't fall down the stairs.

Be good to you, sweetie!

Sewing all that black fleece doesn't sound like much fun. I had to write & tell you that I'm almost finished reading "Darling Jim" by Christian Moerk. I can't wait to find out the ending, but I know I will be sorry when it's over. I found out about this book from reading your blog. Thanks!

People have asked me to do projects for them and I have told them I will assist them with their project but I won't do it for them. Most of the time they don't realize how much time and energy it takes to sew. They assume you can just whip it up and its finished in the blink of an eye.
You should put your health and the well being of the puppies first. Besides that think of all the fleece dust!!!

Triage

I have decided to implement the process of triage in my sewing room. That's the only way I'm going to survive.

Jungle book

So next project up will be this (above), the jungle baby quilt for my sweet friend Falicia who is expecting her first baby (a boy) any minute now.

Again yesterday, I didn't get anything done. There were constant interruptions--many of them from my two furry housemates, true. But not all. I answered an offer to receive a free HD satellite dish upgrade and free HD for life, and the technician was here most of the day getting that set up. Now I have asked Santa for a new HD tv for Christmas. The jolly old fellow is even now checking my records to see if I've been good.

My, uh, shall we call them housecleaners? are coming today, so I probably won't accomplish much today either. I'm going to have to have another heart-to-heart with Linda and Joe. Yesterday when the dish tech pulled the tv out to connect the new box, dust flew everywhere. And when I moved the quilt rack the other day to let the lizard out (I didn't tell you about that, did I?), the dust bunnies scattered like dust bunnies are wont to do when disturbed. Also, the ceiling fans are festooned with dusty streamers that make them look like Louisiana swamp trees hanging with Spanish moss. I cannot continue to pay housecleaners who don't clean.

Gotta go. My second cup of coffee waits.

Love that happy jungle quilt! What a joy-joy project to work on for happy-happy results to propel you onwards!

Triage worked on M*A*S*H and it works in real life ERs so it's a good plan. Most urgent dealt with first. Yep!

I have dust bunnies and enough extra fur for a few more cats (no thank you) but I'm the one at fault about that. There are just not enough spoons to waste that many on cleaning - or that's my excuse.
Good luck with the upcoming conversation with your cleaning folks.

Hugs!

I have never had a cleaning person or service, but believe me I could use one. My house will never be cluttered, but it does tend to need dusting too often.

LOVE that quilt! And I think you should definitely speak with Joe & Linda! Having someone clean your home when you are in pain is a wonderful thing. But PAYING to have it done inadequately is not right! If they are not nice about it, I believe you may need to have Miss Sophie or Lil' Skipper 'gently' bite their legs! LOL! If they are RUDE about it, call me & I will bite their legs! Sorry - I'm being totally silly today! LOVE YOU!

A Fine October Morn

  2007-07-02_brewfinal

Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and owlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
...Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
~William Shakespeare (or somebody)

It's cloudy and windy here this morning. Brown leaves are blowing down the street and flying through the air. The dogs keep barking. Halloween is in the air. Don't you just love it?

I didn't get a thing done yesterday that I had planned to do. Best laid plans, huh? Today will be different, though. I hope.

So bye now. Let's see if I can accomplish a thing or two.

P.S. Skipper and Sophie say that line about "tongue of dog" in the McBeth quote offends them. So I'm thinking of changing it to "tusk of hog." Sorry Mr. Shakespeare (or whoever). Can't upset the doggies.

Great Halloween picture and quotation! I always did like that part of McBeth! Your change to the words is quite appropriate, considering Sophie's and Skipper's feelings!

Nothing much accomplished yesterday in my sewing plans either. I did write out plans and measurements so AMIL can cut and sew her two Christmas blocks for the centers of her two planned table runners. Does that count?

Enjoy your day! Hugs!

Baby Quilts and Scary Books

Reese

On Saturday, I embroidered the little recipient's name on the bear baby quilt. Then while watching the 'Bama Crimson Tide make confetti out of the Tennessee Vols (sorry, Vols fans), I did a little knitting. I vowed that on Sunday afternoon, I would complete the quilt top that I worked on during our virtual retreat.

616aw8FTpVL._SS500_
But on Sunday morning, while cruising the internet, I found mention of this book. It sounded like something I'd like, so I downloaded a sample to my Kindle--and I was hooked. After I completed the sample, I downloaded the whole thing to my Kindle and read half of it before bedtime last night. I wanted to finish it but got too sleepy.

It's the author's debut novel, an adult fairy tale (if you don't remember, those fairy tales we read as children were very scary). But this book's fear factor would beat out anything the Brothers Grimm ever imagined and, at times, might even put Stephen King to shame. So don't even consider it if you don't like scary books. And especially if you're an arachnaphobe. I'm a veteran scary book reader; hardly any of them truly scare me any more. But this author's description of his main character crawling through a concrete pipe filled with spiders of every description gave me goose bumps and made me say, "Eeeeeeew" several times. Not since my first reading of Dracula, when I was a teenager, has a book put my nerves so on edge. I can't wait to get back to my Kindle and finish this one.

But I'm determined to not lay hand nor eye on that little white reader until I have done some work in the sewing room. So many projects behind am I that I'll never see daylight if I don't get to sewing. It's a cloudy rainy day--very conducive to scary-book reading, but I'm going to ignore that fact and go to the sewing room. I am, I am I tell you.

BTW, there's a very good interview with Dead Path author Stephen M. Irwin here. I would venture to predict that this Australian has much success in his future. I haven't even finished the book, and I'm already looking forward to his second one, which I understand Irwin is at work on.

Thanks to all of you who commented on my hickory tree poem yesterday. I have probably written no more than half a dozen poems in my life. Right now, I can remember five, but one of them sucked big time.

Grace in a Nut Tree
By Susan Ramey Cleveland

The golden glowing hickory tree,
In the autumn of the year,
Makes me ponder in my mind
Why God put it here.

For it's beauty, for sustenance,
To hold the soil in place--
Or only to personify
God's golden glowing grace?

There are so many beauties here,
Not just this golden tree--
Too many to enumerate,
They prove God's love for me.
***

I'm usually too shy to let anyone read any of the rare poems that I write. I know I'm not a poet. But as I was walking Sophie and Skipper this morning, I was thinking about God and talking to him. My best worship comes at times like these. The hickory trees caught my attention, and these lines popped into my head. So I give them to you, for better or worse, this beautiful sabbath morning.

Make a Doll, Warm a Heart

  Gz1rz764
Enchanted Makeovers' mission is to transform shelters for women and children into heartwarming havens, uplift the human spirit and empower individuals from all walks of life to pursue their dreams. --Mission Statement of Enchanted Makeovers

If you aren't aware of Enchanted Makeovers, the onine group committed to turning homeless shelters for women and children into warm and cozy homes, it's time you learned about them. Click on the link above to see some of the magical makeovers that this group has creatived, turning dingy, drab shelter rooms into cozy havens.

"No woman or child recovering from an abusive situation or sexual assault should have to sleep in bedrooms that reflect their feelings of despair, unworthiness and fear. The makeovers are just as important as the shelters recovery program."

There are various ways you can help Terry and her group. So if you think you would like to get involved, visit the website and read all about it.

This is how I plan to help: Starting Dec. 4, the group will launch a project called "The Doll Adoption Project." She's asking for handmade dolls to give to children in shelters. Just in time for Christmas, you can help make some unfortunate child's holidays a little bit brighter. If you craft or sew, please consider getting involved with this. Even though I have lots of projects that have passed deadline, I plan to make at least one doll for Terry and her group. I hope you'll consider it too.

And, btw, happy Pink Saturday. I know lots of you love the color pink as much as I do. So be sure to visit Beverly to add a big blob of pinkness to your Saturday.

And speaking of pink, some of you commented on the pink needlepoint butterfly pillow that Skipper is lounging against in yesterday's photos. I got that little treasure at my favorite thrift store. I think I paid $2 for it.

Oy my! Skipper is attacking! Gotta goooooooooooooo

Here He Is Again

Pink Saturday

It seems that Skipper is getting more than his fair share of blog publicity these days. I promise, Sophie, next week is going to be all yours. No more photos of your little brother for a while.

But he's just so darned photogenic--and, being Little Mr. Show-off, he loves to have his picture taken. You don't, Soph. You make me really work hard for any pictures I get of you--you being Little Miss Diva Dog. Plus, you're all black, which makes it that much harder to get a good photo.

But next week will be all yours, pinky promise. Just one more, ok? One more photo of your cute little brother Skip, then no more for a while.

A Proper Post

Hair baller2 Have you all seen these fur collectors? You use them to get up pet hair from furniture. It works pretty good, although I think those sticky roller things work better.

I haven't had a pet fur problem with Sophie. She doesn't shed. She hardly ever loses a hair, even in the bath or hair brush.

But that Skipper is another story. Wherever he rests for a second or two, he leaves a carpet of hair. I keep the living room furniture covered with quilts that I can shake out. But the Skip likes to sleep in my bed, something else I've never had with Sophie. Every morning, I have lots of dog hair in my bed, and since I tend to be allergic to everything, I run this hair-baller over the sheets and covers every morning.

The first time Skipper saw me using it on the bed, he jumped up and tried to insinuate his little body under the contraption. It didn't take me long to figure out that he wanted me to roll him with it. So I did, and now I have to do it every time he's sees me using it.

Fence

Sophie and Skipper are growing to like their back yard more and more every day. At first they were very hesitant to check it out without me, but they venture out a little further every time they go out now.

Can you see them--just to the left and behind the bird feeder, under the little dogwood tree? This photo doesn't show even half of the fenced area. There's lots more. Jesse spent much of the day here yesterday clearing out some of the small trees and brush from the wooded area. It's looking more and more better.

I'm going to try to spend a little time in the sewing room today. After last week's retreat, I haven't sewn a stitch this week. Have a good day, everyone.

We used to have a dog who lost so much hair that we'd have enough hair for a spare dog every couple of weeks. Or it seemed that way!

Good Redneday Evening

Reds

I promise a proper post tomorrow. I've been busy today. And now I'm too tired to think. So I'm going to soak in a tub of hot water, watch "Criminal Minds," then go to bed and read. Meantime, if you'd like more blogs to peruse, click on the button below and visit Sue's Rednesday Blog Party for lots and lots and lots of red fun.

There's nothing like an apple for a nice healthy snack! A soak in the tub sounds wonderful, but I don't know about watching Criminal Minds before going to bed. That show gives me the creeps sometimes!

Cross-stitched Treasure

Quilt1

Border

I've had requests to blog about the cross-stitched quilt hanging behind my couch. So here goes.

I didn't make this quilt. Instead, it is one of my luckiest yard-sale finds ever. Sometime in the early 90s, I was driving to work one morning, through an affluent section of Birmingham called Mountain Brook. when I spied a yard sale. Of course, I stopped. That's where I found this amazing cross-stitched quilt with a price tag of $20.

I talked to the woman who was holding the sale. She told me that her grandmother made the quilt, and she thought it was about 50 years old. That would make it 1940s, but I'm thinking it could be as late as '50s or '60s. She thought, and I agree, that it was made from a purchased pre-stamped quilt kit. I believe it was probably either a Bucilla or Herrshner's kit.

I've researched this quilt all over the internet, and haven't been able to find it's origin. I did find, on E-bay, another quilt done in the same design but in multicolor embroidery. (See last photo at bottom of post.)

If anyone knows anything about the origin of this quilt design, please let me know.

As you can see from the photo above, there are some areas of the quilt where the embroidery is worn. The woman who sold it to me conjectured that this was caused by someone sitting on the bed that the quilt covered. There are also a couple of worn spots in the fabric and a small stain that looks like rust maybe. I chose not to try to repair it but to leave the quilt exactly as I bought it. The hand quilting is amazingly precise and plentiful.

Orange_red_quilt_002
This is the quilt I found on E-bay. It is priced at $139.00. There isn't a lot of information as the date or pattern company, but the hand quilting on this one is the same as on mine, more evidence that both quilts were stitched from pre-stamped kits.

Your quilt is beautiful and it was a surprise to see the design was all cross stitch. What a treasure you found at such a bargain price, too.

I wonder if the kit your quilt was made from was pre-quilted, too? That would account for you quilt and the eBay quilt having the same quilting designs. My mother made two quilts from such pre-quilted kits but her quilts are mostly applique with some cross stitch. I remember as a child hearing her wonder aloud why on earth she got two identical kits!

Hugs!

Very pretty - I can never understand why people would want to get rid of or sale family heirlooms... maybe I'm the only one who treasure family heirlooms..I assume everyone should realize (and appreciate) how much time and work it takes to complete something like your quilt.

On 10/19/2010, Ruth said ...

Thankyou for sharing your beautiful quilt, it was a really great find. Nice that someone like you who will treasure it, was able to buy it. Having made a less inticate cross-stitch quilt I know the amount of time this quilt took to make.

Beautiful. Even $139 is not expensive for a quilt that is so much work! But $20 is a real find!

On 10/19/2010, Gretchen said ...

I'm so happy the quilt found a home with you who appreciates handwork. I was so sad to read that the owner sold her grandmother's quilt for $20. I guess I'm just sentimental and like old things too much.

It is gorgeous and such a precious treasure. I don't believe it could have found a better home than with you.

You Might be a Pinkneck If...

Laundry

...on laundry day, you devote an entire load to pinks.

Happy PINK SATURDAY everyone. I've been sitting on the back porch with my coffee, enjoying the crisp autumn morning and watching Skipper and Sophie enjoy exploring their big fenced back yard. Yesterday they were hesitant to venture far unless I was with them. But they're getting more confident this morning.

I can't even tell you how good it feels to not have to hop out of bed first thing in the morning, leash up the dogs and walk around the block before my coffee, before I've worked out any of the stiffness and pain. And then look forward to doing it again all day every couple of hours or so. Thank you, God, for Sophie and Skipper's new fence.

i hope everyone of you is looking forward to a wonderful, blessings-filled autumn weekend. I sure am. But if the Crimson Tide performs like they did last weekend, I'm going to have to swear off football as part of my autumn weekends.

More Retreat Progress

Here are the projects that Pat McDonald worked on during our retreat.

Pat M2

Of this gorgeous top, Pat says, "It is a Quilt Soup pattern, but I changed the crazy log cabin blocks and redesigned my own lady bugs.  Also, I added the blue birds."

Pat M3

And here's what Pat says about her "Dear Jane" blocks: "On Oct. 1st, I started the Dear Jane quilt.  I love every bit of the process!  Figuring out the angles to cut for patterns, cutting the fabric, and hand sewing has been great fun.  (Does that mean I really need to get out more often?!)  I've cut and assembled the first four rows in baggies( I was so confident I'd have enough time to sew them all).  The 1st row was hand sewn before our retreat.  But the 2nd row, I was able to sew in the six hours."
***

Brita was able to get a few more blocks done for her beautiful pastel sampler quilt. But her kitty, Miss Annabelle, couldn't stick with it. She curled up in her basket and did what cats do best--napped.

Brita's blocks

If you haven't had a chance to visit the retreaters who have blogs, I hoper you're able to do that soon. There's lots more fun to be seen. Thank you all again for taking part in this online retreat. We'll do it again next year--if not before.

Hi Susie!

Hope you've recovered from the marathon of sewing and that the gates have been properly hung to keep the furry kids in the yard.

I also meant to say thank you for the prize I won but awoke in the night thinking I hadn't said that. Thank you!

Pat, what a happy quilt you've made with flowers, birds, and all! I'm astonished at your Dear Jane blocks and that you did that 2nd row in merely 6 hours! Way to go!

Brita, your new blocks are lovely! I think your quilt is going to be so pretty and will delight you!

I need to catch up on housework and some laundry here but plan to cut the fabric so I can do one or two blocks a day until I have the remaining 16 blocks finished.

Hugs to all!

Announcing Winners

Names I wrote names of all retreat participants on slips of paper and put them in this tin. Then, with the dulcet sounds of two small dogs barking in the background, I drew the winners one at a time...

AND

THE

WINNERS

ARE....

Names2

Prize Pack #1 (socks, sign, book) goes to Mary K.
Prize Pack #2 (magazines) goes to Barbara.
Prize Pack #3 (fabric) goes to Thelma.

Congratulations, ladies. E-mail me your mailing addresses at suscleve@aol.com so I can get your prizes off to you. Barbara, I'm pretty sure I have yours. I'll let you know if I can find it.

Thanks to one and all for taking part in our 2nd Annual Yellow House Virtual Quilting Retreat. I've had so much fun seeing all your projects, plus getting more sewing done myself than I have done in months and months.

I didn't quite finish the diamonds quilt today, what with all the fence installers coming and going. They almost got the fence up. Just a little more to go. After they left, I went out to inspect. I'm afraid I'm going to have to tell them tomorrow that the two gates won't do. They don't come all the way to the ground. Both have openings underneath that a billy got could get through. No way they're going to keep in two little dogs.

If you have sent me pictures to be posted, I'll get to them tomorrow. I'm really tired tonight. I think I'll get into my jammies and camp out on the sofa till bedtime. The doggies have had their last street walk. Good night, everyone. And thanks again to everyone who took part in the retreat--the sewers and the watchers.

Susan, I did not officially participate in
your Retreat, but I enjoyed following it and sewing along as much as I could. I attached an outer border making my queen size quilt ready to load and quilt. Shew! Glad that's done. Today, I pulled fabrics for a little autumn wall hanging for my kitchen. I "vascillated" about the color arrangement for too long and finally told myself to "just do it." So the bacground is done and the applique pattern pieces cut out. That's it for today. Thank you for putting together this 2nd Annual Yellow House Virtual Quilting Retreat (would that be SAYHVQ?). It was fun to watch the progress.

Retreat Updates

Thurs Brita's Blocks
Here are Brita's pretty pastel blocks. I think the colors in the blocks blend beautifully, and the border fabric pulls it all together. I might add a narrow spacer border between the top and the print outside border for definition, but otherwise, I love it. I love her kitty cat too.

Thurs Brita's cat annie

Below is what Brita says about her work this week. Do you have any comments for her about her blocks?

"I bought this pastel fabric bundle at a quilt show last year, but never got further than deciding on the patterns.  I got only two blocks made on Day One (top two).  On the second day, I made the second two.  Not making much progress, and I'm already not liking the colors.  The fabric along the side will be the borders.  Maybe if I make more, they will blend more -- right now they look too different.  I plan to set them on point with sashing, and that may pull them all together.  The third picture is of my resident Quilt Inspector, Annabella, checking it out."

Thurs Barb
Barbara sent me this photo last night of her progress. She says there's not much to say about it but that she completed three more blocks. I might add: This is going to be one awesome quilt. I can't wait to see the finished product.

I have some more photos of Sandy Gail's Sunbonnet Sue quilt, but I'm having technical difficulties downloading them. I hope to be able to show them to you later in the day.

Also later in the day, I'll be show and drawing for prizes, so stay tuned.

Brita's pretty soft pastel blocks really appeal to me. I love quilts from the 1930's and for some reason, those blocks remind me of that era. Her kitty is soooo sweet, sitting there in the window.

Barbara's blocks are really going together well. Way to go, Barbara! What a nice design.

And, of course, I absolutely love your diamond quilt, Susan, I really want to make one of those!

On 10/14/2010, Barbara Anne said ...

I vote more pastel blocks, Brita, and love the blocks you've made! The border fabric is just delicious, too. Well done! Miss Annabella is a beauty!

Thanks for you sweet comments about the blocks for my son's quilt. These are so not my favorite colors to work with and I prefer prints or tone-on-tones to these solids. Still, this quilt is all about his choices!

I hope to get one or two blocks competed before time to leave for the medical appt. Torrential rain here, so hope it slacks up, too.

Hugs to all!

Hi Brita! Don't worry about not liking the quilt, just keep going. There have been plenty of quilts i've made that i thought "what am i doing?". Sometimes I have to get almost finished before I like it...Its pretty, U R doing good, and the border will be perfect!

Patternity

Flutterbyquilt
Several of you have asked about the pattern and fabric I'm using to make my diamonds quilt. This is a Tula Pink design (shown above) and I'm using Tula Pink fabrics from her "Flutterby" line to make mine. You can find the quilt pattern HERE. You might have a little trouble finding the fabrics now. I used a Flutterby Jelly Roll, and I don't even remember where I got it. I think I ordered it online, but that's as close as I can get. But there are many other fabrics that would work gorgeously in this design. Someone mentioned using Kaffe Fassett fabrics, and I think that's a great idea.

Get-attachment.aspx
Others of you were interested in the patterns for the Sunbonnet Sues that Sandy Gail used in her quilt. This is the book she used. She created her own embellishments, like the balloons and soccer balls, but these patterns would give you the basics.

I have to confess I pooped out early this afternoon. I sewed another row of blocks, finally found my heart template, and that was it for me. After another walk with the doggies, I had to call it quits. I was exhausted and I really didn't want to push so hard that I'd be out of commission tomorrow.

BECAUSE TOMORROW IS PRIZE DAY! I'll draw for several prizes, so you will want to stay in touch tomorrow to see if you won anything. I'll show pictures of the prizes before I draw.

I hope everyone gets a good night's sleep and is ready for a full, fun last day of our retreat tomorrow. I can't believe it's already coming to an end. Sleep tight, all.

P.S. I'm sure some of you blogless retreaters have sent me photos and/or reports from your work today. I promise I'll post whatever you have sent first thing in the morning.

Another P.S. I'm linking to Tea Rose Home Link Party. Thought this would be a good way to show a few others what we're making. And you might want to pay a visit to Tea Rose and see what others have made as well.

LOVE the quilt! Well done!!

I'm glad to hear you found the heart template, too. It's such a relief to find things that have been misplaced.

I hope to get going early tomorrow but have to leave at 2p for a medical appt. for DS2.

Sweet dreams, all!

Hugs!

Well done... Hope you rest well. I'm done for the night - my knees are sore from basting my quilt!

Thanks for organizing this!

That is beautiful Susan! I got my backing fabric yesterday so after the morning rush of getting a kid to school and husband and second kid to work, I will be making my back for my Halloween quilt!
