On Rabbit Rabbit Eve

India's_Square-1 \

Above is a picture of a square that my niece India made for Vann's prayer quilt. Don't you just love that verse? What a beautiful and awesome image it conjures. It's not a familiar verse to me, but it's one I'll add to my prayer journal. I looked up "Jeshurun," and found that it's a poetic word for Israel or the people of Israel. Thanks, India. It now is a part of the prayer quilt.

I really thought my cold was better, but I coughed all night last night. Had to get up a couple of times to take cough med. I always cough more at night when I'd like to be sleeping. I'm pretty sure I know what my trouble is though. Driving down Zeigler Road this morning, I saw it, popping out in all it's troublesome glory--RAGWEED! I'm so allergic. I always get sick this time of year. So I'm going to call Dr. M tomorrow and see if he can add some Claritan or something to my arsenal of meds.

The doctors still have not told Vann that he can definitely come home, but I think (and hope) they're moving that way. His pain and nausea seem to be under control for the most part.

Paul brought us a baked chicken today. We have oodles of corn left over from yesterday, so guess what's for supper.

Amy is sick now too. Really I think she's just exhausted. She spent every night last week at the hospital with her mom and part of the days. Today is the first day she hasn't gone to the hospital since she got here from Oregon. Phillip is still at the hospital tonight. He has spent most of the day cleaning out his mom's apartment. She will be moving into a nursing home when she leaves the hospital. Mother Teresa's quote ("I know God will not give me anything I can't handle. I just wish that He didn't trust me so much.") must seem particularly appropriate for Phillip and Amy these days, with both of their parents ill and so much responsibility coming down on them. I'm very proud of them, though. They're handling everything with grace and competence.

Jed came back by the hospital today. He, Vann, Phillip, and I watched part of one of the movies he brought: "A History of Violence." Vann got tired so we stopped it and will finish it later. Thank you so much, Jed, for the gifts, the company, the prayers, and the love. We're crazy about you.

L_b24dffebab2a8d963bdcefc9555ee16c Something I just found out from my friend Judy Cloe: If you say the words "rabbit rabbit rabbit" before you say anything else on the first day of each month, you'll have good luck all month. (A bit of internet research shows that some people say"rabbit rabbit, white rabbit," and some just say "rabbit rabbit."

Tomorrow being September 1, let's hear a chorus of "rabbit rabbit rabbit," or something along those, lines in the morning.

I feel so for Amy and Philip. When my mom died suddenly, and Dad was sick with heart disease and cancer, it just seemed like it was all too much. We sisters rallied together though, and we came through it all. Keep in mind the wise words of my friend Pastor Ken--"Give care to the caregiver". Take care of yourself, my friend.

It was great to see you & Vann & Phillip this weekend! I'm just sorry I missed seeing Andy and Amy. By the way - tell Vann that I'll be up late this week, so if he has problems with the DVD player, to give me a call even if it's 1 or 2 in the morning. I'll probably be up anyway. Love - Jed

Does it count if you say rabbit, rabbit after talking to cats, not people? Hope so. We have an alarm cat who walks all over us when he decides it's time for us to be up!

I'm sniffling this morning and it's a glorious 65*F so perhaps autumn is around the corner?

So glad Vann is feeling better and the annoying bothers are under control.

You caregivers take care of yourselves. Make the best decisions you can, forgive yourselves for what just cannot be done, and remember the caregiver rule: No Guilt! You're doing your best and that's the most anyone can do.

One of my favorite verses is the one that follows India's chosen and stitched verse:
v. 33 : The Eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms...

Blessings, hugs,and continued prayers.

Sunday Summary

Fried-okra Today before I went to the hospital, I cooked fried okra, field peas, corn on the cob and blueberry cobbler. I also did two loads of laundry. I only cooked all that stuff because friends had brought us the fresh veggies and I had bought the blueberries several days ago and didn't want them to go bad. Andy came and took over the laundry for me after we ate lunch.

Our friend, Joy, came by on her way to the airport. Joy lives in DC and was here visiting family here.

Then I went to the hospital to find Vann's room full of visitors, along with Phlllip and Amy. After everyone else left, Jed (my nephew) came in and hooked up a DVD player for Vann. He also brought some "guy movies." By that time, Vann was tired out, so we didn't watch a movie. Jed said he would come back tomorrow when Vann had time to rest up.

I thought that my cold or whatever was a lot better this morning. But this evening after everyone had left Vann's room and he had dozed off, I had a coughing fit. So I left to come home and take some cough medicine. It's better now. Guess I pushed a little too hard today.

I'm so glad Vann is doing so well.

That being said, I'm going to fuss a little! Here goes: If you don't take care of yourself...how are you going to take care of Vann? Try to get rid of that cold, it'll drag you down sooner than anything especially with the stress you've been under! Get some rest, eat well, get some more rest...everything else will take care of itself! (Glad you have family and friends to help!)

On 08/31/2009, Barbara Anne said ...

Hi Susan!

Good to hear yesterday was a good day for Vann! Hospital visitors are well-intentioned and most certainly welcome, but too often stay too long and it is exhausting for the person being visited. No one should be shy about asking folks to leave because it's nap time.

Nice that Vann will have the distraction of movies to watch. Hospitals are boring places to be stuck when you're feeling better.

Since Vann is eager to come home and says he'll be pushing for that, perhaps you should ask the nurses or doctor if you might need any type of medical assistant to help Vann at home if he's very weak? It would be good to know who to call if help becomes necessary.

Now missy, I'm with Debbie in reminding you to take good care of yourself. It wouldn't seem like going to the hospital to sit in a chair would be very tiring, but it is. Be good to you, rest, and eat some of that nourishing fresh food.

Hugs!

Treasures, Large and Small

A faithful friend is a strong defense; And he that hath found him hath found a treasure.
 --Louisa May Alcott

X Cardinal I had a rough night--coughing, sneezing, aching, etc. So I've decided to stay home from the hospital again today. Vann called me this morning, and he sounded great. He said he also felt great and was going to try to talk someone into letting him come home. That would be great, but I'm not holding my breath for that.

Some of the sweetest things have shown up in our mailbox lately. That little nesting cardinal came from Nicole. She also sent Vann the palm angel you see below.

My Cloth-Paper-Studio friend Wendy sent me the beautiful ATC and the little yellow bird pin.

And the lovely tea towel with the handmade patchwork border is from my Charming Girls tea towel swap partner, Kris.

X Palm angel

X Yellow bird

X Towel

And remember last week when I wrote about Amy's birth mother Cindy coming to visit us? Well here's the promised picture, below. Can you see the resemblance?

X Amy & Cindy

So now I'm all swimmy-headed, my ears are buzzing, and my head is hurting. So I guess I'll go and lie back down. I couldn't show pictures of your prayers on this post. But those prayers are the best treasures of all. Thank you all, and may God bless you.

In Healthier TImes

Vann biddy suzie Here's a photo of me, Vann's mother Miss Biddy, and Vann several years ago vacationing at Vann parents' house on Lake Seminole in Southwestern Georgia. Biddy was still walking then, I didn't have fibromyalgia and arthritis and hadn't gained weight, and Vann was as healthy as a horse.

Now Miss Biddy resides in a Camilla, Ga., nursing home, I haven't had a pain-free day in, like, seven years, and Vann is being treated for cancer. Lives have a ways of changing when you're too busy being happy.

But, hey, I'm in danger of dropping off into a melancholy mess here. Let's look on the bright side. Today was a fairly good day at the hospital. Vann slept well last night and felt pretty good all day. He had visits from several friends, including Mr. Bill, Horace H. from Athens, Georgia, the preacher, and me and Amy of course. I left him at about 6:30 to come home and tend to Sophie, who hadn't been out to tinkle in about eight hours.

Every day, it seem that I meet a new doctor who is working on Vann's case. Today it was a young Asian woman (I missed her specialty). She came in to tell Vann that his tests were showing that he has a sodium deficiency. Well that sounded like the simplest thing in the world to cure to me--just eat a couple of bags of Golden Flake Potato Chips and a jar of olives. But the doctor said that things weren't quite that simple. It seems they have to find what is causing the deficiency before they can prescribe a treatment.

Tomorrow Vann is going to have fluid drained from his abdomen again. He is still on a restricted diet, but at least now he can have jello, soup, pudding, and ice cream. He mostly doesn't eat anything though except a little of the soup. No appetite.

We still haven't been told when chemo will resume. Or if it will. We're waiting for all the doctors to do their tests and evaluations and let us know what they recommend.

Our son Phillip will be here tomorrow evening. With his mother's accident and his dad's illness, he finally decided that Wyoming wasn't the place he should be right now. Since Carrie is working on her comps, she isn't going to be to come with him, which makes us sad. But we really really thank God that Phillip could work out his schedule so he could come.

Amy learned yesterday that the hospital was planning to move her mother down to the same floor and wing that Vann is on. Now this is Vann's ex-wife. Suffice it to say that it wasn't an amicable divorce. Amy jumped into that situation immediately and convinced the staff that it was not a feasible plan to have her mom and dad anywhere within shouting distance of each other.

Biddy grover vanna Here's a pic of Vann and both his parents (his dad Grover and mom Miss Biddy) taken on the same day as the one up top. Grover is the healthiest one of all three of us, I think. All he has is bad knees, a history of a heart attack, and a groin aneurism. It's just amazing to think how a group of people can be so healthy and then just a few years later, poor health has come home to roost.

I'm asking our prayer warriors to please add Miss Biddy and Grover to their prayer lists for a few days. And for Vann's baby brother Ben. Ben has been left with disabilities as a result of having contracted Gillian-Barre Syndrome a few years ago. He's having a hard time dealing with Vann's illness right now.

My prayer tonight is that this family be returned to happier, healthier times. (And could I please ask to be that skinny again?) I also pray for happy times for all our Blogland buddies.

Pray for a Cure

581px-Ted_Kennedy__official_photo_portraitDominick.preview Cancer took two great men from us today. Senator Ted Kennedy, after a lifetime of public service, lost his battle with brain cancer. Author and journalist Dominick Dunne succumbed to bladder cancer.

The world will be a little darker without these two. My prayer tonight is that a cure be found for this horrible disease.

Cancer has touched the lives of many of my friends and family. My niece died of cervical cancer when she was only 42. A friend lost her daughter to colon cancer. One of my best friends from high school lost a grandson to brain cancer. Cancer took another dear friend's husband. Our church secretary recently succumbed to ovarian cancer. My grandmother died of stomach cancer. As most of you know, my husband, Vann, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last November. He is in the hospital tonight fighting for his life. The mother of a good friend was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, too late for any kind of treatment except pain meds. The list goes on.

I also have friends who have beaten the monster, but even they were left with battle scars. They lost breasts, hair, organs, and life savings in the fight to live.

I say cancer has had its way with human beings for long enough. Let's not be satisfied until this horror is wiped from our planet.

Through the Wringer

133380495-M It was the best of days; it was the worst of days. The very, very good news was that Vann has no intestinal blockages. The doctors had been almost sure that he did--but they were wrong. So that means no surgery.

What he does have is something called a lazy colon. Or was that a sleepy colon. Whatever, Mr. Colon has gone to sleep on the job. And I won't even go into the treatment for that.

The fun continues: Even before Vann went through the discomfort and humiliation of the colon remedy, he was given the gift of a brand new bladder catheter, which didn't work. Fortunately, the catheter came with a warranty. So the good nurse removed it and inserted another one.

There's more: no food, no water, nothing by mouth for now. Well, he can have ice chips, but they aren't very filling. He's really hoping that once the colon treatment is finished, whenever that is, he can have some food. He's thinking steak and potatoes to start.

So, you see, even though we received some very happy, welcome news today, Vann endured one of the worst days yet. And he's being such a good soldier. Oh he gets grumpy from time to time. But who wouldn't? I think, under the circumstances, he's doing exceptionally well.

No word about when Vann will get to come home this time. He's still scheduled for chemo before he leaves the hospital, but nobody has told us when that will start.

I'm feeling much better today. I got some good sleep last night. And although I spent all morning and afternoon at the hospital, I did some resting there too in the reclining chair in Vann's room.

Amy is at the hospital now. She came home around noon and got some sleep and went back about 7:00, just as I was getting home. Andy went to the doctor this morning. She doesn't have the flu or anything too serious. Just a really bad cold. So she's having to stay away from us for a few days until she is no longer contagious.

So that's my Tuesday report. It may sound redundant, but we both want to thank all of you for your prayers, positive thoughts, well wishes, and sweet comments. We're overwhelmed by all the caring that's coming from Blogland. Our best wishes to you all for a good and peaceful night.

Hi you two. What a vicious cycle life can be...one takes pain medicine to become comfortable, and it puts the bowel to sleep too! Once things are back on the "go" again, perhaps they can add some meds for that and once strength returns and activity, that will help as well. You know I am praying as always, sending warm thoughts, and lots of love to all of you.....as ever, Trudy

You and Vann have been on my mind and in my heart all day.....thought I would check again tonight, and I'm so glad to hear that things are looking up. I had a complete bowel blockage a few years ago, had to have surgery, and then I had an ilius, which sounds like what Vann is experiencing. Well, my colon must have been hibernating, because it took 24 days in the hospital (no food/drink) before Ms. Colon woke up. I recently read in a medical article that just chewing gum can stimulate the lining of the bowel----you might ask the drs., or just try it. I wish I had known about this when I was in the hospital. Best of luck...and here's hoping you're out of the hospital soon! Jane McCarthy

Do I ever hear you, sweetie!

Poor Vann! Being in the hospital is no place for the modest or faint hearted, is it? Mercy! The things they do to people in the name of helping. I'm an RN so can say that with certainty as I've been on the helping end of some procedures and the receiving end and that receiving end is no fun.

Glad to hear the other news as that's all good and especially that Andy isn't badly sick.

Keep taking good care of you!

Prayers continue ...

Mighty hugs - Barbara

Goodness! Morton Salt surely has the right tag line: When it rains, it pours. Whew! But I choose to look at it THIS way - all that rain can be a pain in the patoot when it's going on, but it comes down for good reason. So let's hope all these trials poor Vann is enduring, all this worrying I know YOU are doing, plus the girls' mother's hospitalization, AND Andy's bad old cold are all going to 'grow' something beautiful. LOVE YOU!!!!

Back to the Hospital

Hope-1 I'm sorry to report that Vann is back in the hospital. He had stopped being able to eat and was getting weaker and weaker. This afternoon when we went for chemo, Dr. L admitted him to the hospital. The good news was that his blood counts were very good, and his abdomen wasn't distended. His blood pressure was excellent, no temperature. But plenty of pain, weakness, and nausea.

They did a series of x-rays this evening as soon as Vann was settled in. I hope we'll hear what they showed tomorrow. They aren't letting him have anything by mouth, not even water. That makes me think that they could be thinking "surgery."

I wanted very much to stay with Vann tonight. But I slept about two hours last night and about the same the night before. My entire body feels like it's on fire and I'm totally exhausted. I'm afraid if I don't get some rest and try to get the fibro pain under control, I won't be able to take care of Vann when he gets home. Amy is staying the night at the hospital, dividing her time between Vann and her mom. It's sort of convenient that they're both in the same hospital. I just wish neither one of them were. Amy is really being a trooper and doing everything she can to help us and her mom. Andy has been a great help too, but now she has come down with some kind of respiratory thing and really needs caring for herself. I think this family needs a complete tune-up.

Calls continue to pour in from friends and neighbors with offers of help. God has blessed us richly with good friends and family.

Please do keep us all in your prayers. We need them now more than ever. Hugs to all.

Dear heart,

I'm so sorry that Vann needed to be back in the hospital but am elated there was no distension and that his blood counts were/are good. Hope today's news is good, too. Hydration, nutrition, and pain can be handled at home when you have assistance there.

Daughters are the best in saving the day, aren't they? So speaks this daughter, of course!! Hope Amy holds up and Andy gets over this annoying bug.

Take good care of you, sweetie. Hospital chairs and long hours away from home all feed the aches and bothers. Give yourself permission to tend to yourself with a long bath, nap, or whatever it takes so you can feel as good as possible when you're with Vann.

Hugs, blessings, and continuing prayers ...

I'm am so terribly sorry for all you are going through. I'll for sure keep you and all of your family in my prayers. My husband had a stroke four years ago (he's ok). The one thing I had to learn to do was accept help, in whatever way it came. From mowing my yard to gettng me a milk shake. When people ask what they can do it's so easy to say, "Oh, I'm fine. I don't need anything." When in fact, you do need help and they lovingly want to give it to you. Take them up on it. It'll make you and them feel so much better.

May the Lord's angels wrap their wings around you in the dark corners of your night to keep you safe and warm.

And you will have the courage to embrace the eternal good."

oh, But The Talk Comes So Easy
when Life's At Its Best
but Its Down In The Valley Of Trials And Temptations
that's Where Faith Is Really Put To The Test

A Fitting Tribute

N1560545010_56942_5186797 Vann is very popular with the kids in the neighborhood. Actually, he's popular with kids everywhere; he speaks their language, I think, and he always has time for them. Yesterday, we found out just how popular he is with one of the neighborhood boys. Hunter is 13 and lives across the street from us. Two of his favorite things are soccer and fishing--and he's good at both of them.

Yesterday, Hunter and another neighbor boy, Alex, came over to visit Vann. They didn't stay long because they knew Vann didn't feel well. But before they left Hunter said, "I wrote a paper about you, Mr. Vann. About your strong faith in God." (Hunter goes to a private Christian school where they're allowed to acknowledge God's presence.)

Vann and I were just barely able to hold back the tears until the boys were gone. I hope Hunter will bring Vann the paper to read.

(Note to Hunter's Dad: I hope you don't mind too much that I boosted this photo of Hunter from your Facebook. I have some pics of him, but they're on the computer upstairs and I didn't want to climb the stairs. Anyway this one is so cool.)

Amy arrived on Thursday evening.
AmyDaughter Andy picked her up at the airport after Amy had spent the day traveling from Portland, Oregon. Amy and Phillip had more bad news this week. Their mother fell and broke her hip. She had hip replacement surgery and is not doing well. She already had several other health problems before the fall. Amy plans to stay with her at the hospital for the next few nights. Please keep our son Phillip and daughter Amy in your thoughts and prayers.

So Many Books; Only Two Eyes

Sometimes I just can't stick with reading just one book at a time. It's sort of like trying to work on just one sewing/quilting project at a time. I'll start one book, then another one catches my attention, and I think to myself that I'll just read the intro or the first page or the blurbs on the back. But then I get pulled in and really start to read that second book--and sometimes a third. That's what has happened recently.

33927717.JPG I started reading Caitlin R. Kiernan's new book, The Red Tree, which may well be her best book yet. It reminds me just a little The Physic Book of Deliverance Dane in that both books deal with New England legends and spookiness, dusty old houses, deadly flora, and whatnot. Excellent read for those who like spooky stuff.

4a3e90eb201ce_113872n But before I was halfway finished with The Red Tree, my neighbor Jennifer brought me a copy of The Shape of Illusion by William Barrett. This book's theme centers around a 17th century painting depicting Jesus outside the court of Pontius Pilate after Pilate has sentenced Jesus to death. Each person who looks at the painting sees himself somewhere in the faces there. I've read only the first chapter of this one, but I'm tightly hooked.

Bleepbook And then, this morning, what did the mailman deliver but a copy of What the Bleep Do We Know, a book that deals with two of my favorite subjects: quantum physics and the soul. I tore the wrapper off the package, read the notes on the back and then the introduction. And that's how The Bleep Book became the third book in my "reading now" stack.

As I finish these books, I'll post them in the books-read list in the left sidebar with a brief review of each.

I hemmed a pair of Vann's new pajama pants this morning (yes, they're 100% cotton). I've also been trying to get Vann to eat. His appetite has slipped to almost nothing, plus the chemo has him nauseated this time. We talked to Dr. L's assistant this morning and were told to cut back on some of the meds, add more of some of the others, and try eating tiny amounts of soft food and drinking Gatorade. And if that doesn't work, I'm going to play the airplane game that I used to do with my children to get them to eat.

Thanks for all the comments, the well wishes, and the prayers. We love you all.

Ah, the joy of sequestered nooks and sweet serenity of books (or something like that!)... even less than serene books of the spooky kind!

Yes, I love to read. Am working my way thru the old Madeline L'Engle books I missed as a child and am amazed at her imagination and love the themes of love and harmony in the universe.

Glad you found 100% cotton pjs.

When my dad was undergoing chemo, he ate lots of Pancho's cheese dip and Tostitos. It's a bit of a hot dip with the Rotel, but my father said it kept it's correct flavor and he loved Rotel.

Pancho's Cheese Dip
Combine in microwave dish:
1 lb American cheese, sliced or block, grated
1 1/2 tsp. cumin
1/4 to 1/2 tsp. black pepper
1 can Rotel (puree)
1/2c. boiling water - optional

Heat until melted, then stir like crazy. Keeps well in the refrigerator for a week.

Hope this sounds and tastes appetizing to Vann and the rest of you.

Prayers continue ...

Hugs - Barbara

I hope you know you have me HOOKED. LOL! I will be buying THE RED TREE! Looks awesome! I'm well into THE PHYSICK BOOK OF DELIVERANCE DANE and I LOVE it! I'm such a 'student' of things like the Salem witchcraft trials, the Holocaust, Jim Jones and the mass suicides, and the Waco insanity. It fascinates me how people can be SHEEP & just blindly follow a person or an idea. I think my obsession began with Orwell's ANIMAL FARM way back in 6th grade. (Yes, I read it way before it was required reading in high school. I was always an odd one. LOL!) Anyway, thank you for the heads up re: THE RED TREE. How is Vann feeling today? I HOPE something begins to turn around for him VERY soon! He's gone through ENOUGH and THEN some! If I could think of ANYTHING to send him that would appeal to his appetite, I'd send it. 'Course in this heat, it may be just as well if I DON'T. Give him gentle hugs from me. And you KNOW I'm going to say it - TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Sometimes when we are worried about someone else, we forget to take care of US. YOU ARE VALUABLE and we all love you so much, Susan! Keep us posted!

Professor Tiller had a role in the movie What the Bleep Do We Know--he was the scientific consultant. He has a long history and good reputation as an expert in Auralian photography (he sees auras by use of a special photographic technique). He has written a number of books--one is Science and Human Transformation: Subtle Energies, Intentionality and Consciousness. He truly believes that our universe has a strong spiritual component and undertakes to prove this scientifically. I grew up with "Bill" as a frequent guest at my parents home, and feel privileged to have been close to him and his family.

Susan, DO work on those gorgeous quilt pieces 'cause I am EAGER to see them completed! And I already had the book, The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane on my shelves, but when I read your review I pulled it to read. Just on about p. 112 so BARELY started, but I'm LOVING it! Hugs & MORE hugs to you & Vann! Did you find his cotton pjs?

Keeping Busy

A Knitting

This is my play bag I take with me to the hospital each day. As you can see, it has my knitting and my reading, and my brand new issue of Love of Quilting. Not getting much sewing done these days, but I have plans for when Vann gets home (see below).

A Pinwheels

To work on my August Charming Girls Challenge project......

A Mystery

and to finish this mystery project for the Charming Girls Tea Towel Swap.
***

My Disappearing Nine Patch Blocks from the swap came in last week. Aren't they gorgeous? Can anyone tell me what that rabbit fabric is and where I can get some?

A Blocks

A Rabbot

Vann is feeling better each day and holding his own as far as the disease is concerned. He went through a very long chemo session yesterday as well as the procedure to draw more fluid from his abdomen. Still no word about when Dr. L. is going to release him to come home.

I'm off now in search of 100% cotton pajamas for Vann. That was his request today, But right this minute, Sophie's request is for me to take her outside. So bye to all my good blogging buddies.

Hi friend!

Here's a great fabric shop search that may be good help with the fabric hunt. I'll look there for you but you should know about this anyway. www.quiltshops.com click on search, select search words, and click Thumbnails. No matches? Try different words.

Cheers that Vann is feeling better and hanging in there. I know it's no fun because there are few times in life when hospitals are fun.

Love your busy-bag contents!

Prayers and thanksgiving continue ....

Hugs to all!

The Great Chipmunk Caper

Sophie

A Sophie Belle Patterpaw Mystery

It was a day like any other. I was on the back porch reading; Sophie was in the backyard sniffing. All of a sudden a great commotion arose. The sound was a bit like marbles rattling around in a plastic bucket. It was coming from the backyard to the left of the porch steps. I put down my book quickly and hurried to see what the matter was.

There was Sophie, her head in the gutter downspout up to her eyeballs. A high-pitched squeal and a vicious schnoodle growl were blending with the marbles-in-bucket sound to create a regular cacophony.

161227916_9f2af0b636 Then, right before my eyes, Sophie made a lunge and wedged her head even further, up to her ears in the downspout. She was stuck. She flopped over on her back, legs kicking in the air, body wiggling like a fish out of water. The squeals and growls were increasing in volume. While I was trying frantically to figure out how to unwedge my dog from the pipe, out she popped, chipmunk in mouth, and across the backyard she ran.

Not to be too outdone, I ran right after her. She stopped. "Drop it!" I ordered, but she was most averse to taking orders right now. There was yet the endgame to be played. I remembered that Vann had always told me that, no matter how distasteful to me Sophie's kills are, I must praise her for her prowess.

"Good girl!" I said with gusto while patting her on her black little head. "Goooooooood girl! Now drop it."

But Soph was still not ready to relinquish her booty. It took a few more coaxing good-girls before she let me have the by-now-quite-dead chipmunk for disposal.

Later in the house, Sophie had a treat and I had a glass of iced tea. Just another day in the life of THE SOPHINATOR.

IN OTHER NEWS
I spent yesterday afternoon at the hospital with Vann while Andy stayed here with Sophie. When I got home, she had done all my laundry, cleaned up my kitchen, and given Miss Sophie so much love and attention that I don't think the dog even cared that I was home. I had cooked a chicken in the crock pot earlier and so I made up a fine chicken salad for supper, adding toasted pecans, dried cranberries, and some chopped green onions.

Madmen_screensaver_thumb After Andy went home, I turned on the tv to find I had almost missed the season premiere of one of my favorite shows, "Mad Men." This is the second season of the show which follows the drinking, smoking, back-stabbing, and sexual escapades of a 1960s New York ad firm. I love it! That Don Draper is one sexy dude.

Lots going on at the hospital today, so I must get up and get myself going. Vann is scheduled for lots of tests and procedures, including another periocardiocentesis (which means drawing fluid from his abdomen), another CT scan, and chemo.

Again, I can't tell you all often enough how much we appreciate all your prayers and good wishes. I give Vann a report on them every day. May God bless you all richly.

Hi you two. I had to smile at this chipmunk story as it brought back many fine memories of me growing up in the virgin woods of northern Michigan with chipmunks everywhere. My dad caught one for me once by putting watermelon seeds and melon inside a minnow bucket that had a string attached to the small opening/lid. We hid and waited for the curious little guy to climb inside and go for the seeds. Bingo...down came the lid and then what to do....my dad had to build a cage for it and I kept it most of the summer before letting it go. Such good childhood memories....things to smile about with sweet thoughts 50+years later. Thoughts/prayers continue for all of you there, from all of us at Windemere Farm.
Love, Trudy

The Lord's Day

6056 Our heartfelt thanks to everyone for your comments, good wishes, and prayers. I'm too tired for much of an update this morning, and I need to get hopping and get to the hospital anyway. First, the Sophinator and I have to have baths. I'll try to remember later to tell you about Sophie's "Great Chipmunk Caper."

Vann reports that he had a very good night, had a walk this morning on Dr. L's advice, and was planning to take a nap when I last talked to him. He'll be having chemo at the hospital tomorrow. Still no word on when he'll be home. Dr. L wants him there until the pain and nutrition issues are under control. But maybe I already told you that.

Remember to check out the Spiritual Sunday site for inspirational posts on this wonderful day that the Lord has made. For my spiritual Sunday, I'd just like to ask for continued prayers for Vann.

We Continue to Pray

Praying_Hands4

They did the procedure yesterday to draw the fluid from Vann's abdomen, 4 liters (about a gallon), he said. He felt so much better afterward. But this morning he called me and said it was back, that his tummy was just as distended as before. He asked me to come to see him alone today. Don't know what that means. I hope it just means he wants some alone time with me. I'd like some with him too. Please join us in continued prayer.
