Vann is very popular with the kids in the neighborhood. Actually, he's popular with kids everywhere; he speaks their language, I think, and he always has time for them. Yesterday, we found out just how popular he is with one of the neighborhood boys. Hunter is 13 and lives across the street from us. Two of his favorite things are soccer and fishing--and he's good at both of them.
Yesterday, Hunter and another neighbor boy, Alex, came over to visit Vann. They didn't stay long because they knew Vann didn't feel well. But before they left Hunter said, "I wrote a paper about you, Mr. Vann. About your strong faith in God." (Hunter goes to a private Christian school where they're allowed to acknowledge God's presence.)
Vann and I were just barely able to hold back the tears until the boys were gone. I hope Hunter will bring Vann the paper to read.
(Note to Hunter's Dad: I hope you don't mind too much that I boosted this photo of Hunter from your Facebook. I have some pics of him, but they're on the computer upstairs and I didn't want to climb the stairs. Anyway this one is so cool.)
Amy arrived on Thursday evening.
Daughter Andy picked her up at the airport after Amy had spent the day traveling from Portland, Oregon. Amy and Phillip had more bad news this week. Their mother fell and broke her hip. She had hip replacement surgery and is not doing well. She already had several other health problems before the fall. Amy plans to stay with her at the hospital for the next few nights. Please keep our son Phillip and daughter Amy in your thoughts and prayers.

Tell Amy and Phillip I'm adding their mom to my prayer list.
Beautiful picture! Sophie looks like she's saying "Iams" instead of "cheese."
Hope Vann's appetite is improving. I'm thinking lime sherbet.

Sweet!! I also hope Vann is allowed to read Hunter's paper without embarrassing Hunter too much or embarrassing Vann either, of course.
So glad Amy is there but am sorry to hear about her mother's injury. Prayers beginning for her and continue for the rest of you.
Yes, Sophie is definitely cherishing the attention!
How about rainbow sherbet?

I hope you get to read Hunter's paper. You and Vann are such wonderful examples to the faith.
Maybe chicken and dumplings could tempt Vann's appetite?
Love to you and yours from me and mine.

Amy and Phillip's Mom is in my thoughts and prayers along with Vann.
Blessings,

Gosh, Susan. When it rains, it pours, doesn't it? I know you are trying so hard to stay focused on the good. And, I know in my heart that God is there with all of you. The story you shared of Vann's little friend did bring me to tears. I believe that a life well-lived is one that makes the lives of others better. Clearly you and Vann exemplify well-lived lives. I am proud to call you my friend - even if it is only on-line.
My prayers are with all of you.

Sniffle, sniffle ... now WHY do I not have a box of tissues by my computer when I need one? I'm SUCH a crybaby! I LITERALLY had to stop & go do other stuff this morning before I could respond to this post. That young man is a great testimony to Vann's beautiful spirit! And my forever prayers are with you and ALL your family!
