Pride of Family

Below is an announcement I received this morning (sans the photo) about a poetry reading tomorrow, to be given by my big sister, Joanne. Isn't she beautiful? Both my sisters are award-winning poets. Not me; I'm more of the limerick sort, myself. My sister, Ramey, still makes fun of the poem I wrote when I was a teenager--something about cucumbers, if I recall. Anyway, if any of you are out this way tomorrow, drop in and listen to Joanne read.

Jesse Today is my grandson Jesse's 20th birthday. Happy Birthday, Jaybird, from me, Vann, and Sophie. Handsome lad, isn't he? If any of you out there have daughters of marriageable age, I'll make you a deal. Jesse's unemployed, likes to sleep late, likes to eat fast food, likes to play computer games, and loves to ride his buggy in the mud. But, hey! He's sooooo cute! Make me an offer.
Please don't take me seriously. I love this boy with all my heart--wouldn't take a gold monkey for him. (Well, maybe if it was solid gold, not gold plate.) Oh lookee here! I just got another poster in my e-mail box just now (this one, I can't get to show up here). Seems like both my sisters will be reading poetry next month. Ramey will be reading on Wednesday, April 15, at 11:00. at the same place. Whooo-ee! I sure am proud of my sisters! Y'all rock. (Here's a photo of my sister, Ramey, and her daughter India, also eligible as a matter of fact.)

Round, Round, Knit Around, I Knit Around....

Knitting in the round boost Last night I learned to "knit in the round" using circular needles. At first, the needles gave me trouble. That plastic line between the two needles wouldn't cooperate. But I finally got control of them; and with a lot of help from some online videos and tutorials, I soon had a project well on its way. I'll show and tell more about that later. It's a fun project that some of you knitters might like to try.

I also worked on my siggy blocks this weekend. Still not finished, but getting close.

Vann and I are planning to do some relaxing this week. Last week was a blur of activity--not much of it fun. Chemo Monday and Tuesday. Neulasta shot and tax accountant on Wednesday. Shopping and another accountant on Thursday. Preparing food for a neighbor who had just lost her dad Friday. Neighbor's dad's memorial service and wake Saturday. We were so tired by yesterday, we missed church again. We hate to miss church. It seems to get the whole week off to a poor start.

The neulasta shot has some pretty severe side effects, as Dr. L told us it would have. The shot was necessary to boost Vann's white blood cell production (which the chemo has adversely effected). I guess all those white cells making babies is hard on the body. Vann has been very achy and has had stomach problems for several days. As he says, every time he gets to feeling good, they give him something to make him feel bad again.

I'm hoping everyone's week is off to a good start. Hugs from us.

Siggy work

Don's WBC count gets low as well and when it gets under 2000 the doc usually gives him a shot called Nupogen. It makes him ache more than the normal chemo he is on...so I completely understand.

Thank you so much for the sweet comment you left on our blog. It means so much to me that people are listening and praying!

I will also pray for your Vann!

Hi Susan and Vann,

Just a quick note to say I am thinking of you as always. Spring is here at Windemere Farm. I have 65 new chicks of various types and 7 new turkey poults too. I have 21 raspberry starts planted and a ton of seedlings ...all ready to take to the first Farmer's Market on April 25th. Things will remain busy here now, also ready to cut the 5 acres of grass already and get the garden areas tilled. In the meantime, I am sewing and knitting and trying to keep my sanity. BIL has finished his radiation and his chemo continues . SIL is an angel as always and is holding down the fort for them.
Hope your week is a good one and that the healing abounds about you!
Love,
Trudy

Rescue a Kitty, Receive a Blessing--and Maybe This!

Alley+cat+rescue+raffle Sophie and I love kitty cats. And so does Jenny at Alley Cat Rescue. The photo at left shows a kitty cat that Jenny created with her own hands. She's called Old Glory Kitty. Isn't she cute? She looks a bit like the last cat that lived with me. His name was Charles, and he was a Russian Blue. He didn't wear dresses, but the expression on Old Glory's face is a lot like Charles's.

But I ramble. The point is, you could win Old Glory Kitty if you would lend a hand with Jenny's Alley Cat Rescue project. You see, she loves kitties so much, she feeds and cares for the stray kitties in her neighborhood, even to taking them to the vet and having them spayed/neutered. This is all rather costly, as you can imagine, and Jenny could use donations. So hop on over to Alley Cat Rescue and check out the details. For every one-dollar in donation, you'll get one chance to win Old Glory Kitty. But hurry! Her drawing will take place on March 31.

And all the kitties in the neighborhood say, "MEOW."

Azalea I promise to try to get around to writing a real post tomorrow. I've been soooooo busy this week. We're all well, just busy--even Sophie.

I shot this photo while we were at The Creek. The azaleas were just beginning to bloom and they were beautiful. My BIL has tons of them around his house and all down the hill toward the lake.

Thanks, Jenny R.

Needle Case Look what Jenny of Craft Test Dummies sent me for my birthday month--a sweet little handmade felt needlecase.

Jenny's Craft Test Dummies site is a great place to see and read about all kinds of craft products and techniques that Jenny is continuously reviewing. I suggest you check it out.

Vann got a good report from Dr. L. yesterday: his tumor markers remain in the normal range. The chemo hit him for a loop though. He had a bad night of chills and sweats. But he's feeling all right this morning. We're hoping that today's treatment doesn't make him feel so bad.

I'm going to try stitch a few Siggy Blocks before time to go. So bye for now.

Trade Them for a Package of Sunshine & Flowers

Pennie Pockets

I finished the four Pennie Pockets for the CPS swap yesterday afternoon. I want to make more, but now I have to concentrate on finishing my Siggy Blocks.

Vann has chemo today and tomorrow, then a Neulasta shot on Wednesday morning to boost his white blood cells. We have an appointment with Doris on Wednesday afternoon to have our taxes done. So this will be a busy week. I might not get a lot of sewing done this week, but I do have some knitting projects in the works that I can take with me to chemo and work on while Vann is plugged in.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Ours was good. Except for the allergies, aches, and pains, we're doing fine. God is good, spring has sprung, and we're happy to be here.

A Lily Visit

Lily Is this sweet girl adorable, or what? This is Lily Grace, our friend Lori's granddaughter. (Lily's teeth aren't yellow. She was eating Cheez-Its.) This was Lily's first visit to see us. She was a little shy at the beginning, sizing us up. But then she gave both me and Vann sweet hugs. And she shared her Cheez-Its with Sophie.

Lily and Grammy Lori had been shopping, and they showed us their bags and bags of pretty Lily clothes, hats, and purses that they had bought.

Thanks, Lily and Lori, for the visit. It was the highlight of our weekend.

Pennie Pocket Craze

Pennie Pocket Have you seen these? I fell in love with them, and even joined a Pennie Pocket swap. This is my first attempt to make one and I'm not 100% pleased. I think I'll make some more.

Pennie Pockets are easy to make, and fast. Wouldn't they be cute as May Day baskets filled with goodies and hung on someone's door? Or Easter pockets to fill with candy eggs or jelly beans to give to friends? Or what about Christmas stocking alternatives, made from pretty holiday fabrics?

If you think you'd like to make some Pennie Pockets, go to Moda Bake Shop for the instructions.

I've Been a Bad, Baaaaad Girl

Jelly Rolls I told you yesterday that I'd give you a look at a visit we made yesterday on the way home. Our return trip from The Creek always takes us through Ozark, Alabama. This is good. And bad. It's good because we pass right by the gallery of our artist friend Jack Deloney and we can stop and visit with him when he's in (which he was). It's bad because Jack's gallery is located right beside one of my favorite quilt shops in the whole world, Front Porch Quilt Shoppe.

After we had visited with Jack for a bit (and Sophie was having a great time with Jack's Jack Russell terrier Sassy), I told the guys (and girldogs) I was going next door--just to look around, of course. Well, going into Front Porch and leaving hands empty would be comparable to standing over a pan of fresh baked brownies, inhaling the aroma, and not eating any. It can't be done. Not only does the owner Melanie Simpson carry some of the most tempting fabrics available, her shop is also arranged in such an appealing way that you can't resist grabbing up some of the goodies.

I purchased two jelly rolls (seen above). One is Moda's Chez Moi Swanky and the other is Mary Engelbreit. I have specific projects in mind for both of them--I do.

Bubble Gum I also bought a stack of fat quarters of Bubble Gum Basics (at right) by Quilt Soup for Henry Glass. I have several small projects in mind for these. I'll show and tell later when I've made some.

I know I shouldn't have bought more fabric. But in these times of recession and crumbling stock markets, I figure I'm boosting the economy just a little. So it's not all fabric addiction. It's my very own personal stimulous package. And boy! Am I ever stimulated to get into my sewing room and start sewing.

Below are some photos that I took at Front Porch Quilt Shoppe. If you're ever travelling down US Hwy 231 through Ozark, Alabama (Southeast Alabama), stop in for a visit. Even if you don't sew or quilt, it's sure to be fun. There's a map on the website, if you would like more thorough directions.

Oh, and please stop at Jack Deloney's art gallery next door to Front Porch. Jack is one of the South's foremost water color artists. You'll be enchanted by his work. (Click on his name to see some of his work.)

It certainly does look like a lovely little quilt shop. I can see why it would be impossible to leave without buying something. And if you have a purpose for what your buy - then it is never money wasted and you're right about needing to stimulate the economy.

Happy To Be Home

Creek 2

We took a short trip down to Spring Creek on Lake Seminole in South Georgia this week. We had a nice stay with Vann's youngest brother Ben and our future sister-in-law Sue-Bob. They were very gracious and fed us very well. One night we even had a fish fry with some of the neighbors. (Fish caught from the lake by Ben himself.) On the way down, we stopped at Vann's parents' house in Camilla and visited with them. We also drove back to Camilla yesterday to visit with them some more.

Our son Phillip flew in from Wyoming on Sunday night, and he accompanied us to The Creek. He'll be here until Friday morning.

The Creek is a wonderful place to be. Very serene and pretty. It's one of Sophie's favorite places in the world because there are so many places to explore (and squirrels o'plenty). The azaleas and dogwood were blooming, and the temperatures were mild.

Tomorrow I'll tell you about what I did on the way home this afternoon. It was just about more fun than The Creek. Here are a few more pics from The Creek.

Fun Among the Fabric Stacks

HH1 I had vowed to stay home and finish the laundry yesterday. But while the first load was agitating, I picked up my March newsletter from Heart to Heart Quilt Shop and was reminded that if I go in before the end of March (my b'day month), I get a 20% discount on everything I purchase. I mentioned this to Vann, and he said, "As soon as you get your shower, we'll go." That's all it took.

I forgot the piles of laundry in the bedroom floor, took a quick shower, and we departed for Trussville, the litte community just down the interstate from Leeds. Of course, since I was getting a 20% discount, I bought too much (but mostly books), in which I've found at least three quilt patterns that I just have to make with fabric I already have. I did buy a few fat quarters, but I believe there's a law against going into a quilt shop and not buying any fabric. Anyway, I wasn't taking any chances.

Met my friend Patsy and her husband Jackie there. I didn't even know she was a quilter. She said she took up the habit, er uh I mean hobby, about a year ago. Jack and Vann visited while Patsy and I spent money.

Here are some photos from Heart to Heart. If you're ever in the Birmingham area, I recommend a visit if you like quilt shops.

Susan

It's great to know that you are getting out and about with that wonderful man of yours! The shop looks so neat and cozy. I love the white quilt with the ribbons at the corners.

Can your husband talk to mine about how fun togetherness on the quilt shopping thing can be?

Did you check to see if Vann was running a temperature? He is a rare man, indeed!

Hi Susan ~ I like Vann's "get up and hop in the car and go" mentality. :) Sounds like a very fun, fun shop! I was at the quilt shop here locally on Saturday, too. I had almost made a rule to not buy anything until everything I have is sewn and used up. I broke my rule..but it was for a good cause!

Oh, does that look like fun!! Maybe I'm lucky I don't live that close, I wouldn't be able to resist. Happy Birthday (whenever it was) and enjoy all your new stuff!

Thanks for sharing the pictures of the quilt shop - I sure enjoyed the visit. How nice that Van doesn't mind going to quilt shops with you. My husband will go, but usually sit in the car, but he is a sweetie, just takes a nap and tells me to take as long as I want. But then, I sit and sew while he checks our cemeteries - he is a genealogist, lol.

Advice Requested

Pan I found this cute little tin at our local thrift store recently. I bought it for a dollar and came home and ran it through the dishwasher, thinking that would remove not only all the dirt, grime, and germs but also the rust. The dirt and grime are gone, and probably the germs as well. But the rust remains.

Vann says it's going to take a lot of scrubbing if I want to get the rust off, and I'm sure he's right. After all, he has de-rusted a lot of stuff in his time. I just thought I'd see if anyone out there has a miracle rust remover. Well, do you?

I also found this pretty fan. It didn't have a price, so I asked the checkout lady how much.Fan "How about a dollar?" she asked, "because it's old." Well, it isn't old, and if it was it would probably cost a lot more than a dollar. But even though it's only a reproduction, and it's broken, I bought it anyway because I love it.

Book club is this afternoon, actually in about an hour. I haven't finished the book (Down the Garden Path by Beverley Nichols) and I haven't showered and dressed. So I guess I'd better sign off and get busy. Hope everyone is having a lucky Friday 13th, already the second one this year.

A wee Irish Blessing:

May God give you...
For every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

Try Coke Cola and Reynolds Wrap. Dip the wadded up Reynold's Aluminum Foil in the Coke and scrub. I read about it. Tried it on the bike I had as a child I brought home and I was amazed how well it worked.

You may even be able to pour some coke in the muffin cups and let it soak a bit before using the aluminum foil. . . . I goodled "remove rust from metal" and there is a post that suggests soaking in distilled vinegar overnight. . .

You might try a Mr Clean sponge.. OR there is a product called Rust Off (or something close to that). I get it at Kroger or Walmart. It is a small brown bottle and removes rust from anything. It is a liquid and you just squirt it on the rust. I used to live in a house with a horrible well that would turn the tub orange. This would get it all out. I also have removed rust from clothing, carpeting and floors with it....

I had rust on the clasps of my Singer sewing machine case and it came off easily with steel wool.

Good luck with it.

On 03/13/2009, valerie said ...

Steel wool is what I was going to suggest also. Whenever you find something that works let us all know.

Naval jelly is a rust remover that supposedly works very well, but I'm not sure about it's toxicity.

CLR works pretty well, but just don't leave it on there very long. it will take off the surface of pretty much anything. If you go that route, I'd suggest washing that pan thoroughly before using it.

Did Dad tell you I called? I forgot to call on your birthday so I called the next day but you were out. I'm sorry I missed you. I hope you had a wonderful day!

Amy

to try & be "green", I'd say soak in vinegar and go with steel wool the day after...
it's really adorable !

Making Up for Yesterday

Vann in 'halls Yesterday was my birthday, as you know, and we played. We did not a speck of serious work. What we did do was sleep late, take long hot showers, read, go to Outback for steak and garlic mashed potatoes, come home, and read some more.

In the evening, Andy and Jesse came over and brought cake, balloons, and gifts. Andy had made the devil's food cake with vanilla and walnut icing, and was it some kind of good. They also gave me a copy of one of President Obama's books, the one I've been wanting to read, and balloons (see photos).

Today I received a birthday package in the mail from Nicole, who sent me a wonderful neck pillow with fragrant herbs inside.  (Hey! I used to know a fellow named Fragrant Herb. He worked at a mink farm.) You can warm the pillow in the microwave or chill it in the freezer for soothing sore neck muscles. (See it pictured with Pres. O. book.)

Thank you so much Nicole, Andy, Steve, Jesse, and Vann. I can hardly wait till I settle down tonight in my big chair with my book and my neck pillow. I still have cake too, as well as the memory of that wonderful steak lunch yesterday. I love you guys.

But today is another story. Today we're working, as you can see from Vann's working attire. (Isn't he just too hot in those bib overalls and brogans?) I raked and picked up leaves and about 65 jillion hickory nuts off the lawn, and Vann is doing the first mowing of the year. The little green grass shutes are poking up under all that thatch, so Vann deemed it time to mow. Even Sophie got into the spirit of yard work, picking up sticks and chewing them into sawdust.

I also want to thank everyone who left happy birthday messages here. I don't know if I'll get around to answering each one of them personally, but I surely do appreciate them. Each one brought its own happy smile. You are all so great to have as blogging buddies. One of my many blessings.

Here are a few photos from yesterday's festivities.

The picture above is NOT me and Vann, BTW, although I can see where it could be mistaken for us. It's actually a card that our friend Lori sent me for my birthday. Thanks, Loribelle.

Happy belated birthday, dear Suze! I didn't forget your birthday. I was one day off--all day yesterday, I thought it was Tuesday instead of Weds. That has messed me up today, too. Today is Thursday, right? Glad you got lots of goodies and a steak dinner.

Hey Susan
Tell Vann I said "looking good." Phil is excited to come and see you guys. His plane gets in at 9:30. Let me know if you want my parents to get him. I hope you have a nice weekend.I'm letting Phillip sleep in, but I'm going to wake him up in about an hour with some breakfast in bed. We have a great bakery in town and I've discovered it the way to wake him up without gumpiness.
Love-Carrie
