Yesterday was my birthday, as you know, and we played. We did not a speck of serious work. What we did do was sleep late, take long hot showers, read, go to Outback for steak and garlic mashed potatoes, come home, and read some more.
In the evening, Andy and Jesse came over and brought cake, balloons, and gifts. Andy had made the devil's food cake with vanilla and walnut icing, and was it some kind of good. They also gave me a copy of one of President Obama's books, the one I've been wanting to read, and balloons (see photos).
Today I received a birthday package in the mail from Nicole, who sent me a wonderful neck pillow with fragrant herbs inside. (Hey! I used to know a fellow named Fragrant Herb. He worked at a mink farm.) You can warm the pillow in the microwave or chill it in the freezer for soothing sore neck muscles. (See it pictured with Pres. O. book.)
Thank you so much Nicole, Andy, Steve, Jesse, and Vann. I can hardly wait till I settle down tonight in my big chair with my book and my neck pillow. I still have cake too, as well as the memory of that wonderful steak lunch yesterday. I love you guys.
But today is another story. Today we're working, as you can see from Vann's working attire. (Isn't he just too hot in those bib overalls and brogans?) I raked and picked up leaves and about 65 jillion hickory nuts off the lawn, and Vann is doing the first mowing of the year. The little green grass shutes are poking up under all that thatch, so Vann deemed it time to mow. Even Sophie got into the spirit of yard work, picking up sticks and chewing them into sawdust.
I also want to thank everyone who left happy birthday messages here. I don't know if I'll get around to answering each one of them personally, but I surely do appreciate them. Each one brought its own happy smile. You are all so great to have as blogging buddies. One of my many blessings.
Here are a few photos from yesterday's festivities.
The picture above is NOT me and Vann, BTW, although I can see where it could be mistaken for us. It's actually a card that our friend Lori sent me for my birthday. Thanks, Loribelle.

Happy belated birthday, dear Suze! I didn't forget your birthday. I was one day off--all day yesterday, I thought it was Tuesday instead of Weds. That has messed me up today, too. Today is Thursday, right? Glad you got lots of goodies and a steak dinner.

Yes, work follows a play day! I hear you on the 65 jillion hickory nuts on the ground! We have a bazillion acorns that make walking like skating on ball bearings! That nice microwaveable neck roll will be mighty handy tonight.
So glad your birthday was so much fun and yummy, to boot! Nice gifts, too. Happy day after!

Hey Susan
Tell Vann I said "looking good." Phil is excited to come and see you guys. His plane gets in at 9:30. Let me know if you want my parents to get him. I hope you have a nice weekend.I'm letting Phillip sleep in, but I'm going to wake him up in about an hour with some breakfast in bed. We have a great bakery in town and I've discovered it the way to wake him up without gumpiness.
Love-Carrie
