Trick or Frickin' Treat

Witch_sophie

Goody Patterpaw sends her wishes for a very spooky Halloween. Look out for those ghosties and goblins, y'all. Hmmmmmpf!

(Now, SuSu, can I take this crap off and go chase those cats over by John's house?)

Oh. How. Cute!! I love it!!! We've got a part Cairn/part Daschund but I seriously doubt she'd let us dress her up, I found a Yoda costume that would be perfect for her though. Our three big dogs(2 labs and a border collie) will go as clowns since they're already in costume.

Oh, Soshie is a kitty, 11 years old this month. She is doing better today, not much stronger but she did manage to use the litterbox without throwing up. My fingers are crossed for a full recovery.

Oh my God Susan, this photo is perfect! Isn't she the most adorable dog? You have to see last night, my dogs didn't want me to give sweets to my little neighbours and were jelous. Every time I gave the children something, I had to give them some biscuits for dogs...it was so funny.

Laurel Burch Story

Laurel Burch is such an inspiration to me. As you probably know, this wonderful artist passed away in September from complications from a lifelong bone disease that caused her constant pain. And through it all, she continued to create her wonderful art, right till the end. Here's her story, in her own words.

OHMYGOSH a CAKE WALK!!!! Just yesterday I was trying to 'splain what that was to my kids and hubby. When I was a grade-schooler we had the most awesome Halloween Carnivals at our schools!! One had all the game booths outside along the sidewalks in front of the buildings with crafts for sale, coffee, and card games inside the cafeteria for the older folks. They always had a cake walk!! I SO miss that about my childhood. Sounds like a great time!

Trick or Treat, Y'all!

Witch_1_copy_tiny_nl8x
Happy Halloween to all who are taking part in Nita's Trick or Treat Party! E-mail me your address, and I'll mail you your treat on Monday. My e-mail address is suscleve@aol.com.

But for now, for your Halloween reading enjoyment, here is a poem I wrote. It's called:

"The Ballad of Witch Weezle"
(Rated PG13)

Witch Weezle went out one night alone;
Her broomstick she did ride.
She wore a cape of blackest silk,
Her party dress to hide.

I'll have some fun this night," she said.
"I'm tired of such work loads
As stirring brews and casting spells
And turning lads into toads.

"And anyway, in all my life,
It's love I truly crave.
I'll have it yet, perhaps tonight,
From some young sexy knave."

In the alley behind The Rusty Screw,
Her broomstick she did park.
"They'll never know my true i.d."
She said there in the dark.

Laying her cape upon her broom,
She gave her hair a pat.
She checked her makeup, then her dress,
As in the dirt she spat

A lump of snuff she'd been chewing on.
It wouldn't look so fine
A-drooling down the lips of
A fox dressed all in shine.

Not two minutes at this bar
Weezle spied a tasty lad.
She winked at him and he at her.
In denim he was clad--

Which drove our Weezle quite insane,
That being her favorite fabric--
Especially when laid upon the loins
Of such a sexy maverick.

Let's skip the stuff that's in between
And cut right to the chase:
They went to bed and had a toss.
This happened at his place.

When they awoke next morning fine,
Weezle gazed into his eyes.
"I love you, lad," she said to him.
Her gave her but smiles and sighs.

He dropped her at the first bus stop.
Weezle feared she was being spurned.
"I'll call you, Dear," he said to her,
And on his heal he turned.

Weezle reached into her party dress
(the pocket on the side)
And drew forth her trusty wand
And aimed it at his hide.

I guess you know what happened next;
A toad hopped down the street.
In place of denim, he wore warts.
Webs joined the toes of his feet.

Beware, young comely laddies,
Whom you ply with your false love.
You might have to trade your bachelor digs
For lily pads and mud.

Ah, Books!

Pbs_booksAs if I needed something else to fill my time, I have discovered PaperbackSwap.com! Most of you know that as much as I love quilting, sewing, crochet, knitting, and yard sales, I love books that much or more.

So when I heard on "The Today Show" about this website where you can swap your books (not just paperbacks) for credits to get more books, I beat a path to my computer and signed up.

I've spent part of this past week listing books to swap--and wrapping and packing books to mail. SPbs_3o far, I've had 10 requests for my books. That means, along with the 2 introductory credits I received, I've earned 12 free books--or I will have earned them as soon as the people receive my books I've mailed. So now I'll have to start searching the listed books to see what I want to read. This is TOO FUN!

I also finished the "Give Thanks" banner top and took it to Bible study last night to show Edna P. I'm making it in memory of her daughter Karen who passed away several years ago of colon cancer. Karen was a wonderful young woman with a husband and two teenagers. Her whole family misses her so.

My goal today is to get the top/batting/backing basted together for quilting. I would so like to have it quilted by Sunday, and I plan to straight-line quilt it on the machine, but still, I'm not sure I'll have it done by then. But for sure by the next Sunday.

The rain has stopped, the sun is out, we have chilly fall temperatures, and life is good. I hope it is for you as well.

I love to read as well. I just started a book by Ken Follet called Pillars of the Earth, about the building of a medieval cathedral. I can't put it down! He just came out with a sequel, 18 years after Pillars, and it is #1 on the charts already. I figured I had better start in with the first one, and am glad I did.

And It Rained and Rained

HydrangeaAlabama has been the recipient of lots of beneficial rain this week. So far, our rain gauge in the back yard has measured over 2 inches. Thank you, God, for this wet stuff.

I did work on the banner yesterday, but didn't meet my goal of finishing the top. A family crisis arose involving my grandson's stubbornness, and that got me off track. I think he's back on track now, at least with a couple of wheels. I've told the whole family that I'm allowing no more teenagers in. Little kids, ok--but no more teenagers. Those people will kill you.

Sophie's ride (4-wheeler) has been out of commission for a couple of days, and she has been mopey. But Vann and Bob got it running yesterday, so that dog has wheels again. Now if it will just stop raining, she says.Give_thanks_2

Is anybody following "Cane" on tv this season? In the absence of Tony Soprano, I just had to have another anti-hero to follow, so I guess Alex Vega is going to be it. (I love Jimmy Smits.) "Cane" follows the doings of a family of Cuban sugar plantation barons in South Florida. Alex has already had somebody murdered (the scumbag needed killing) and is trying to avoid being found out. Also his deal to sell sugar for the production of ethanol has gone south. I'm hooked.

OK, back to the sewing room.

If It's Autumn, It Must Be Apple Crisp

Apple_crisp_better_1I notice everyone is making Apple Crisp (or something akin to it) in celebration of the season. So that's what I did yesterday.

I made mine the easy way, starting with a container of Country Crock Cinnamon Apples and adding a simple topping of brown sugar, margarine, flour, and quick-cook oatmeal.

Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, it was a great ending to the day.

I didn't do much else yesterday; still recuperating from the yard sale. But I feel rested and raring to go today, so I'm going try to get in a full day of sewing. I want to finish up the Give Thanks banner this week so we can hang it before Sunday. Wish me luck.

Hi Susan...just discovered your blog and I like it very much. Every time I have a yard sale, I say it will be the last one. Used to do two a year when I was younger...but like you, now I am just too pooped after. Now I sell at an Antique Faire once a month. Park the truck right next to me so unload and load-up is a cinch. Only takes one day to recover instead of the whole week!

Thanks for sharing part of your life with us.

Old Stuff Finds New Homes

Yards_sale_1The yard sale was a great success. We got rid of lots of superfluous stuff and made a fair amount of money. I also saw old friends and family members I hadn't seen for a long time, and met some really interesting new people as well. (More about that later.)

But the whole affair left both Vann and me stiff, sore, tired, and grumpy. I think it was the stair climbing that did us in. We live in a three-story house and most of the things to be sold were on the third floor. So this was very probably our last ever yard sale.

Saturday was a beautiful day, and our street was full of visitors during most of it. Three other neighbors had yard sales too, so it was almost like a street festival. And almost like a reunion of sorts as well. The daughter of my best friend from high school showed up. I hadn't seen her in years and years. We had a good talk. A cousin that I hadn't seen in years came too, along with some of her girlfriends.

But most of the visitors were strangers. Interesting strangers. The best story, I think, is about the two good-old-boys (one black, one white) who told me that they like to get out and visit the yard sales on Saturday before the football games start. The black fellow looked pretty normal; the white guy had tattoos o'plenty. They were both very friendly and outgoing; you could tell they were doing what they like to do. I didn't think they were going to buy anything, but then the white guy spied a ceramic pig and had a fit.
Yard_sale_pigs
"I have to have this pig for my mama," he exclaimed. "She loves pigs."

"Well, so did my mama," I told him. "In fact, those pigs are part of her collection."

"Oh, look, there are more!" he exclaimed. "I want this one too. My mama will love them. Oh, look, I didn't see the salt shakers. And look at the little pig pitcher. Oh they're so cute. I want them all."

His friend seemed quite amused by this guy's appreciation of the pigs.

"His mama likes pigs," he said to me as if he felt some explanation was needed.

"Yeah, mine did too," I replied.

As I was wrapping the pigs in newspaper for safety and bagging them, the friend said to the tattooed fellow, "Now we're going to have to go by your mama's and drop these off before the game. They might get broken if we leave them in the truck."

So if you ever get the idea that all good-old-boys care about are football, beer, and their trucks, just think of these two fellows who scour yard sales on Saturday morning in search of treasures that their mamas would like.

Another interesting visitor was a tall handsome fellow who bought scads of stuff and returned later in the day with his wife and a friend (woman). The friend chose lots of clothes from my rack and when I was bagging them, I asked her if she wanted the hangers. "No," she replied. "I live with them, and they won't let me have wire hangers. Just like Joan Crawford, you know?" She didn't smile or anything, and neither did the two friends or relatives or whatever they were. It freaked me out, I'll tell you. I couldn't help wondering if this poor woman had learned her lesson the Wire_hangerssame way "Mommie Dearest" taught her daughter about "NO WIRE HANGERS!"

Sophie had a ball, but I think the whole affair tired her out too. She started the day in the house, where she stood constantly at the bedroom window and barked and barked and barked and barked. Finally I let her out. And, as I knew she would, she ran to meet every visitor, barking at them like the most fierce dog in the world. It didn't seem to bother anyone, and Miss Sophie copped many a pet, until she accosted a young Mexican woman with her ferocious greeting. The woman froze in her tracks with a look of extreme terror on her face. I ran immediately and grabbed up Sophie and asked the lady if she was all right. She just smiled and walked on up to the yard sale displays. She didn't buy a thing. I hope she's ok today, fully recovered from her fright.

After the sale was over and all the leftovers were boxed up for transport to Joseph's Storehouse (local thrift store), Paul C. treated us to a wonderful neighborhood cookout of burgers, beans, and coleslaw. Paul is likely the best cook in the neighborhood. He and his wife Karen have an amazing patio behind their house. It's actually an outdoor kitchen with a huge grill and a brick pizza oven and I don't know what all. The supper was delicious, and we were all ravenous after a long day of greeting customers.

So that's it for the Clevelands as yard sale entrepreneurs. Too hard a way to make a living, we say. But it won't stop me from visiting other yard-salers. In fact, I hear I missed quite a few great ones by staying home and holding my own. You can bet I won't let that happen again.

It sound like it was quite the day. Loved the story about the "good old boys" It looks like you got rid of a lot of "stuff". It is amazing how that stuff collects and then multiplies. And then all it really does is require dusting or storing from then on in.

I'm sure Sophie was thrilled to be part of the action - pretty exciting all those people in your yard!!

What a success the yardsale was! I understand that must be a lot of work but also a good day , plenty of little stories that will make you smile when you remember them. Being the hostess must have been stressing to Sophie, but I think she got the best part: no carrying and no packing the stuff. Have a nice day Susan!

What's Going On Here?

Sophie_newer_2Why is SuSu pulling stuff out of closets, cabinets, and drawers and piling it all over the house?

And why does she get mad every time I take that stuffed tiger out of the bag and try to play with it? She already fussed at me 'cause she says I took the bear's sweater off and lost it, and now she can't sell him at the yard sale because his fur is all chewed and his sweater is gone. Well, maybe I did, and maybe I didn't.

From what I gather by eavesdropping, a lot of people are going to be in my yard tomorrow buying this stuff. I think I heard them say I have to stay in the house because I'll bark at everyone and run them off and then they won't buy anything. What do they expect? Not many guard dogs I know whisper.

I hope this is over soon. I can't take much more of this yard sale foolishness.

I'm sorry you have to stay inside because of your barkiness. Look out the window...and if you see anyone trying to get something too cheaply...go ahead and bark! We want mommy to make lots of money!

Oh, your doggy is so cute! How'd your yard sale go, Susan? I think preparing for one of those is like cleaning closets. You start out enthusiastically, pulling everything OUT of the closet. By the time stuff is all over the place, you're so tired you just want to toss it all back IN the closet! But if you don't give in to that temptation, you generally feel a real sense of accomplishment once you've finished. I hope yours was a huge success!

It's Always Darkest Before the Yard Sale

Price_tgs_3 Every tabletop, chair, and bed is covered with stuff as we prepare for a neighborhood yard sale on Saturday. Even the hallways are so cluttered that it's hard to find a place to walk.

I had forgotten what a pain in the patootie it is to have a yard sale. Why didn't somebody remind me? I'm too far into it now to call it off. I'd never be able to put all this stuff back where I found it.

Whatever doesn't sell is going immediately to charity. I'm not about to haul all that junk back up stairs.

Oh my! Good luck!! Yard sales are horrid aren't they?? Sort of like dieting. it only lasts for a short amount of time and the end results are the best. Keep your yard sale goals in mind! Casg and freeing up space!

Oh Susan I hear ya! We've had a yard sale planned for the last 3 years!! It got worse when I let a friend of mine give me her leftovers from a move. Our garage was stuffed, Mark could barely walk out there, let alone park his car. Thank God my parents intervened, much to my dismay at the time. When they were here in May, my dad hauled SEVEN truckloads of perfectly good stuff(= pure junk) to Goodwill. It was SOOO nice to have our garage back.

This fall we started decluttering in earnest and had good intentions of holding a sale but I finally decided to put it out with a free sign on it(last Sunday in fact). A man coming home from church stopped and asked if it really was free. I helped him load two car loads of perfectly good stuff(= junk) to take to his church's tag sale, which also happens to be the church my son attends. It felt so good to have that stuff out of our hair!! I'm still pulling stuff out of closets, cabinets and bins for them. We have a desk and dresser that need to go as well. I don't think I'll EVER have a yard sale again!!

Hang in there!!!!

Molly

Poor you Susan! I hate garage sales. I have had a fair number of them over the years, and the easiest one by far was the recent Saturday when we opened the front door and realized the entire neighborhood was having "Garage Sale Saturday". I just put some stuff out in the driveway and sat in a chair playing with the new puppy and folks came by and bought everything. I didn't even have prices on anything!

A Day of Sewing

Give_thanksAfter about 48 hours of mind-numbing fatigue and feeling like my body was on fire, I have felt much better today. I even got a lot of sewing done. I've been working on the "Give Thanks" banner for the church narthex.

At left is a photo of the center panel with top and bottom leaf panels attached.

Next comes a 3-inch solid red border, then finally an 8-inch border of pieced 2" squares.

Below are the strata for the pieced border.

And here are some of the strata cut apart into squares:

Ghouls, Goblins, and Guild Fun

Guild_halloween_quiltsThe October meeting of Birmingham Quilters Guild was well attended by witches and ghouls, in addition to more than 100 guild members.

Lots of seasonal quilts highlighted Show & Tell. The ones at left are Judy C's. Don't you just love the Halloween colors?

Our hospitality chairman, Loretta S., had gathered all manner of frightening folk to decorate the goodies table. She actually constructed the big witch in green. Isn't she realistic? Roy K. introduced her as a new guild member.

Guild_big_witch Guild_dracula

Guild_little_witch_2
Guild_napkinsThe groaning board was also full of wonder ful goodies. But the ghoulies and ghosties had my attention, and I failed to take photos of the food. I had made two batches of Pumkin Cream Cheese Muffins that went like hotcakes. There was also Cinnamon Monkey Bread, Pumpkin Bars, Brownies, Lemon Tarts, a wonderful Sausage Casserole, and loads of other stuff. Mary U.'s husband Walt had made a batch of that delicious Pimiento Cheese, and Mary brought that on celery sticks and in little finger sandwiches. It was all most delicious.

Guild_bom Our Block of the Month program has proved to be very popular this year. Just look at the blocks turned in, about 120 in all. Virginia was able to give away six batches, I believe; but I didn't win any of them. Pout, pout, whine, whine.

*****************************************************************************************************************************

Show & Tell, as I said, was replete with Halloween offerings. But there were a few projects that weren't seasonal. I just love this quilt of Annie's. It's a Spool pattern made from Kaffe Fassett prints.

I had slept poorly the night before, and my back was giving me fits, so I went home before our speaker, Anita Shackelford took the podium. But I did photograph some of her quilts that were hanging before the program. I was most amazed by her Family Tree quilt that contained lots of trapunto, including this:

At left is Anita's Baltimore Album Quilt, and below is her star quilt that graces the cover of her new book.

After resting for a while after I got home, then Vann and I went to our favorite Chinese joint for lunch.

At 2:30 I visited the chiropractor, which was right torturous, which I told him. This was the first time I have ever had my neck popped (except when it pops itself). Not fun. He also popped my back in several places, each hip, and my shoulders. As I was leaving, the therapist whom I had seen on my first visit, Lisa, came out and talked to me. I told her I had a couple of good days last week, but all the old pain and fatigue had returned. She told me that was normal and asked me to give the treatment time. So I guess I will. But, honestly,
I'd much rather be quilting!

A Sticky Situation

Showpreview

I don't feel like doing anything tonight so I've been piddling around on the computer. I found this site and made stick people to represent my family: Vann on his four-wheeler (couldn't figure out how to get Sophie up there with him), me with curly hair and Sophie. You can go to the site and make your family in stick figures if you like. You can even order a bumper sticker, but it costly. I just made the figures, then copied the image to my computer.

Honored Again!

YoumakemesmileawardI can't believe it--two awards in one week. Clare at Sorta Frugal has given Blackberry Creek the "You Make Me Smile Award." Thank you oh, so much, Clare. It cheers and humbles me to know that someone thinks my blog is uplifting in any way. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I'm supposed to pass this one on too, and I haven't even nominated anybody for the last award, "The Breakout Blogger Award." I have such a hard time with this because there are so many of  you who have wonderful blogs that make me smile, lift my spirits, give me joy, add fun and information to my life, touch my heart. How do I choose? Give me some more time please. Maybe I'll just put you all in a hat and draw out a couple of names. Would that work?

On This Beautiful, Blue-Eyed Saturday

Geese

There aren't many days this nearly perfect. The sky is so blue, the air is dry and lazy. It's the kind of day where you start out yard-saling in corduroy pants and a sweater--then quickly discard the sweater and wish you'd worn shorts.

I just couldn't stay indoors this morning, so while Vann went with Gene to a hunting show in Birmingham, I decided to check out the yard sales. The new Genesis Church, which bought the old Terry Walker Country Club site just down the lane from my house, was holding what they billed as a "Mega Yard Sale." That's where I found the old locket and the piggy napkin rings. That's also where the geese (photo above) were sunning on the former golf course.

I hit several more sales all up and down Hwy. 119. Probably could have found more on the other side of town, but I'd had enough and came home to see Daisy, who is visiting this weekend, and Sophie, who is being her pain-in-the-butt self.

Here are photos of my finds today.

Bowls

Pigs_2 Colorful candlesticks, pastel ice cream bowls, pink piggy napkin rings--aren't they all fun?

Those bowls are lovely, I have to find out where do we have have stuff like that here in Madrid. In Brazil I used to go every Saturday to an Antique bazar. What they had weren't always antiques , actually only a few were antiques...;-)) and it was a good excuse to bring home a new coffee cup and saucer for my collection. Enjoy your new treasures!!!

Well, That Was Fun

Candles_booksThe October meeting of The Bookmarkers came off without a hitch (except that several members had to cancel at the last minute for various reasons). But those of us present had a good time.

We've finally been visited by an autumn chill (nighttime lows in the 40s), and everyone was in good spirits.

I brought out a stack of my scary books to display on the dining table, along with the food.

I had baked a Banana Nut Bundt Cake and served it along with Peanut Butter Sauce (using the recipe that won the recent Southern Living Cook-off).

I also served raw veggies with Ranch Dressing, mini quiches, candy, apple cider, coffee, and two kinds of wine.

Our discussion book this month was The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The book is beautifully written, worth reading for the prose alone. It's a dark story concerning a man and his son on a journey to warmer climates some years after the world has come to an end. I've only read one other book by McCarthy, All the Pretty Horses, which I thought was boring in the extreme. The Road is nothing like Horses.

I had what I thought was a great door prizes, October issues of both Southern Living and Country Living, tied up with gold ribbon and topped with a jack-o-lantern container of candy corn. (See photo at bottom of page.) Well dad-gum if we didn't forget to draw for the door prize (for some reason, we often forget this). I'm going to draw for it today and deliver the prize to whoever wins.

Next month, we'll be discussing much lighter fare: Buffalo Girls by Larry McMurtry. I read it several years ago when it first came out and think it's McMurtry's second best book, after Lonesome Dove. I'm reading it again, starting last night. The central story is about Martha Jane Canary (Calamity Jane) and her love affair with Wild Bill Hickok, which, at least in this book, produces a daughter.

Autumn Interiors

Quilt_pumpkinTomorrow I host book club at my house--and my house is a total disasters. Looks like I've been hosting two-year-olds. But it is decorated for fall, so now all I have to do is clear out, put away, dust off, and fluff up.

Thought I'd show you some of the decorations. On the left is a quilt I started in 1980 and finished in 1991. I call it my 11-year quilt. The leaves are needle-turn applique with hand embroidered veins and stems. It's one of my favorite quilts. It appeared in the Oxmoor House book, Quilts for All Seasons, which I compiled and edited. (At the time, OH had a thing against listing employees as the writers of its books, but I did write it, every blasted word of it.

I also made the Jack in the photo. Not original. I used a pattern, but I forget who created the pattern. I made him several years ago.

On the little chair beside the old sewing machine is Sophie's quilt that I made for her before she was born.

****************************************************************************************************************************
Coffee_table

This little fellow (right) on the coffee table is just something I picked up at Michael's a couple of years ago to use at a church party where I was in charge of decorating a table. I think he's cute.

Below is an altered book that fits the season.

Witches_hearth

These are my
hearth witches. The one on the left is Witch Weezle. I made her many years ago as a result of a workshop at Houston Quilt Festival conducted by elinor peace bailey. Elinor herself painted the face for me. The witch on the right was a Christmas gift (really!) from Maria, a good friend who knows I love Halloween. I haven't named her. What do you think her name should be?

Centerpiece

The dining table centerpiece is infested with critters. Eeeeewww!

That's Vann's granny's wooden biscuit bowl.
