My Most Perfect Day

Messy jesse craft sewing room 1
Disclaimer: This is not my sewing room.

My most perfect fantasy day would not be at the beach or in the mountains or at an Elvis concert. It would be at home. First I would awaken sometime between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. to the soft purrs and quiet snuffles of my furbies (instead of at dawn with Taco walking on me and Skipper emitting his ear-splitting, heart-stopping bark).

I would slowly become aware of the wonderful aroma of fresh-brewed coffee coming from the kitchen. (I don't know who would have made the coffee. Maybe I have a maid, or maybe it was Sam Elliott who has come to visit, but not to stay.) I rise out of bed slowly, stretching, yawning, and smiling--like the pretty young woman on the tv commercial who sleeps in full makeup with her Sleep Number bed dialed to her perfect setting. After I've enjoyed my first cup of coffee (and Sam or the maid takes care of the needs of the two cats and two dogs), I refill my cup and amble slowly up the steps (which is the only way I can amble these days), still in my pajamas, to my sewing room.

My sewing room, I find, is as neat as a showroom--a place for everything and everything in it's place. All my fabric has been organized by color and stashed on my shelves. My sewing table is a picture of neatness. The floor has been freshly vacuumed. The room is so inviting that it's a pleasure to sit down at my Bernina to get some quilt making done.

After a morning of sewing, someone announces that luncheon is served. It's probably the maid because, by this time, I would expect Sam to be gone, not hanging around for me to wait upon and entertain as men are won't to do. Lunch consists of something with angel hair pasta and avocado, and probably a couple of mimosas, made from fresh-squeezed orange juice (which I didn't squeeze) and ice cold champagne.

After lunch, I take a long relaxing hot bath, put on a fresh pair of pajamas, and settle down in on the couch for an afternoon of reading. The book I'm reading is, of course, intriguing. When I am finished I will surely declare it the best I have ever read.

I read until I'm drowsy, and then I slip into a soothing, refreshing nap--while someone else continues to care for the animals, being sure that all their needs for food, water, treats and constantly going in and out the back door are met.

I awaken from my long, uninterrupted nap to the aroma of grilled steak and mashed potato, or perhaps shrimp scampi. Maybe Sam is back and he has prepared a delicious dinner for me. On the table beside the couch sits a fresh glass of white zinfandel. The animals are all peacefully entertaining themselves. After dinner, I watch a wonderful episode of one of my favorite tv shows (or a Quinten Tarantino movie), brush my teeth, and snuggle into my bed as the four furbies make themselves comfortable for the night all about the room. Somehow Skipper and Sophie have managed to get outside to answer nature's call, and they are down for the count.

I sleep like a baby all through the night, never having to awaken to ask Skipper to move over, to lock Taco out of the room, or to go to the bathroom.

I can say with all sincerity that my perfect fantasy day was perfect indeed.

Oh, did I forget to say that there will be no pain and no crushing fatigue? Well, there won't be.

I, too, wish for that perfect day!! At 83, it's getting harder and harder. But i absolutely LOVE fairy tales and day dreams. Mine includes getting all my UFOs finished and my client's bookkeeping work caught up to the minute with everything balancing. More energy would be nice too. Oh... and the chronic vertigo would be GONE. *smiling* From: eaw from Petaluma CA living on same sheep ranch for 64 years now.

Tom Turkey

Turk1

Although this block is not in Lori Holt's Farm Girl Vintage book, it is one of her patterns, and I felt it would go well in the farm girl sampler quilt. The pattern and instructions are on Lori's blog. If you would like to make your own Tom Turkey block, the tutorial is free of charge. Just go to this link. When finished, Tom Turkey will have embroidered feet and legs.

Turk2

You who have been reading my blog for a few years might remember that I made this same block as a pillow front a couple of years ago (see photo above). Trouble is, I never have got the pillow made. Maybe that's a goal to shoot for before this year's Thanksgiving.

That's it for today. I have laundry to finish, so no more blocks today.

Four more to go!!!

Well, you could continue sewing and just wear a loose dress...ha ha.

That dang laundry never stays done unless we stop wearing clothes.

Your blocks are so very cute that I know someday I will get started on mine. Someday. Today I am binding Quilt #2 that is going to China in September. Then I start Quilt #3. But 2 out of 4 for a trip in September is a great start!!

Five More to Go

The furbies were all cooperative, my spoons held out, and I got three blocks sewn yesterday. Take a look.

Basket
Gathering Basket

Pastire
Out to Pasture

Garden
Garden Girl

Five more blocks to go and I can start putting the quilt together.

I probably won't be getting any of them made today, however. The laundry has pile up, and unless I get take care of it, I'm going to be slap out of unmentionables.

Happy Wednesday, everyone.

Weekend Blocks

I finally made it up those dad-gum stairs this morning. So now I can show you the blocks I made over the past weekend.

Pig
Here is Big Pig, as opposed to Little Pig, the pig block that I made when I thought I was going to make all my blocks 6 inches.

Corn&Toms
This block is called Corn and Tomatoes.

Now I'm going to spend a little time with my rotary cutter and my trusty Bernina and make at least one more block. I hope to get two or three made, but I never know when my house mates (Skipper, Sophie, Taco, and Bella) are going to demand that I turn my attentions to them.

Twenty Blocks

I feel like this is some kind of milestone: 20 blocks, 10 more to go, 1/3 of the way finished with block-making. Also I think I've caught up with my original schedule of making one block a week. This is the 20th week of 2016, and I have made 20 blocks. I won't venture to say how long I'll stay caught up; but for now, I am.

Here are the two blocks I made today.

Vetstar
Lori Holt calls this block Spring Star, but in my quilt it's Vettie's Star. Vettie was my paternal grandmother (Maw Maw). She lived on a small, very small farm. She had chickens and ducks and geese and a milk cow and a couple of oxen (or maybe it was just one ox). She also grew vegetables and some kind of grain crops, if I remember correctly, to feed the stock. She also kept bees.

Crossroads

Lori calls this black Country Crossroads, and I'll leave it at that. But the fabric that makes up the blue squares, with its playing children, reminds me of my sister and our cousin, who were best of friends and playmates in our childhood. They're also the children on which my sister based Lily Claire and Willie T., in her book. If you haven't read her book, it's a sho-nuff good one--Sweet Music on Moonlight Ridge by Ramey Channell. Check it out.

Maple Leaf

Leaf

I probably should have used all dark fabrics for my leaf pieces.. There doesn't seem to be enough contrast between the leaf and the background. So I'll have to put this one aside for a day or two and come back and see if I still feel this way. If I do, I might have to remake it. We'll see. If not, then Block No. 18 is done.

Chicken Girl

ChGirl
I finally got into the sewing room today to do some Farm GIrl Sampler work. I finished Block #17, shown above.

The first part of the week was taken up with getting our upstairs air conditioning system repaired. I have been having to get its Freon boosted every year for the past several years. I was told it had a slow leak. Well that leak speeded up. This year when I had it boosted, the boost lasted only a couple of weeks. The upstairs, where Jesse's bedroom is and where he spends most of his time at home, was not conducive to habitation, much less sleeping.

Jesse has a friend in the air conditioning business, and he talked me into letting him call his friend. I was more than a little hesitant (I've been using the same local company for many years), but finally I gave it.

The fellow did a great job, I think. He repaired the old air conditioner (which is original to the house), and if it continues to cool as it is doing now, I won't have to buy a new one for a while yet. I already had to replace the downstairs system a year or two after Vann passed. A very expensive proposition.

But for now, everyone is cool and fairly calm. So let's see if I can get one more block created before time to make supper.

Block Number 16

Girrl1

Lori Holt calls this block Sunflower in her sampler book. But I'm calling mine Farm Girl With Cow. I added "With Cow" because there might be a few more farm girls worked into other designs.I have some more of this precious Farm Girl fabric by Riley Blake. I bought a Layer Cake of 10-inch squares of this fabric line from the online Fat Quarter Shop, and there are three squares with farm girls, each in a different color way and with different girls. I have identified some other blocks in the Farm Girl Vintage Sampler book that have 4 1/2-inch squares for centers, as this block does. So some of those will probably turn into Farm Girl blocks.

It's the Great Pumpkin Quilt Block, Charlie Brown

Pumpkin

I got the Pumpkin block cut out and stitched today. Attention, Nancy M.: The background, leaf, and some of the orange fabrics came from  your stash. But there are plenty remaining to use in the Halloween Tree. Thanks again for the wonderful fabric treasures.

I haven''t decided which block I'll take on next. Maybe the Big Pig, but I've sort of got a hankering to make one of the traditional patchwork blocks. Anyway, for now I'm going downstairs, lie down on the couch, rest my back, and read a little. Someday soon, I'm going to have to think about getting a new and better sewing chair. Maybe I could sew a little longer if my back had better support.

Stripes the Barn Cat

Cat

No farm is complete without at least one (usually several) feline helpers to keep the barn, corn crib, and house free of rats, mice, and other vermine. Here's Stripes, the yellow tabby that will inhabit my Farm Girl sampler quilt. This is one of my favorite sampler blocks so far.

I find there is no dog pattern for this quilt, and we can't have that. I'm going to write Lori Holt a note to see if she plans one soon. If not, I'm just going to have to come up with one myself. We can't have a farm without a doggy.

Next up is going to be the Pumpkin block

Oh Lucky Me!

Fabs

I have the best friends in the world. One of them is Nancy M., a quilting friend and guild sister of mine. When she learned I was planning to make the Halloween Tree wallhanging, she offered me a bundle of Hallween/Autumn print fabrics from her stash. Yesterday while I was out, she brought them by my house. So I had a wonderful surprise on my front porch when I got home from a very exhausting outing. Nancy had left me a phone message to make sure I knew the package was there.

I sat down right away and started going through the fabrics and loving each one. I have been through them now several times, and I'm sure that most of them will work in the Halloween Tree. But one in particular is going to be enlisted for my Farm Girl Sampler quilt--for the background of the Pumpkin block

Fab
This is the print I plan to use for the background of my Pumpkin sampler block.

Pump
Here's an example of the Pumpkin sampler block. I found this photo online, and it didn't have a maker's name, so I'm posting it without a credit. Sorry about that.

But for now, I'm going to work on the Barn Cat block, since I already have the fabric laid out for him. He's going to be a Tabby Cat.

I Fixed It

Cherries

The more I thought about that Cherries sampler block, the more I was certain that it would bother me forever if I didn't correct the error. So I took it apart and sewed it back correctly. Now I can move on.

I hope everyone had a good Mother's Day. Mine was great, even though I felt pretty puny all weekend. On Saturday, daughter Andy brought pizza and cheesecake, and we watched the movie "The Revenant," which was very good and extremely exciting. On Sunday evening, grandson Jesse took both of us out to eat at our favorite Mexican restaurant, where I had a huge taco salad.

Today was my quilter's guild meeting in Homewood, but I truly didn't feel like making the drive. It's about 20-25 miles from here to the Homewood Civic Center where we meet. So I stayed home and fixed my Cherries block.

I have been very lax about attending guild meetings this year. I know I need to attempt to do better. I just wish the drive weren't so far. Only two more meetings in this guild year. I hope to make at least one of them.

Cherry Berry Bin

Cherries 2

Monday was bee day. We met at Sally's and had a great time. Afterwards I was close by to a Hancock Fabrics store. As you may know, all Hancock stores are going out of business, and the story was that they were all having astonishing sales to get rid of all their inventory. So after bee meeting, I dropped in to check it out. I was, to say the least, underwhelmed. Not only was most of the fabric stuff I would not expend the energy necessary to take home, the prices were comical. It looked as if they had marked up their fabric by 40-50%, then put in on sale for 30% off.

Cherries
However, in my perusing, I did find a little cherry print fat quarter that figured would be perfect as the background for my Cherries sampler block. I was right.

I made the Cherries block this morning, but as you can probably tell, there's something not right with the stems. Seams don't match, and the stem ends aren't centered on the cherry tops as they should be. I studied and measured and pondered, and I can't figure out what the problem is.

Lori'scherries
This is how it should look, from the blog of Lori Holt, the author of the book. I'm sure you can see the difference in Lori's stems and mine.

So I got something upside-down or sideways or something. But I'm just calling this one my God Block and being done with it. It goes as is. My back hurts from sitting at the sewing machine, and I'm going downstairs to lie down.

Sampler
But before I go, here's a look at all the 12-inch sampler blocks I have so far. I need at least eight more blocks to make a four-block x five-block quilt. Or if I want it to be five blocks x six blocks, I will have to make 18 more blocks.
We'll see.

Love your cherries block and agree it's fine as it is. Truth be told, on occasion I've used a fabric marker that's an approximate color match to my fabric, and colored in a small area to hide similar goofs. You might consider that if you have a dark brown marker. ;)

Hope your back is feeling lots better. I recommend that you eat and take a pill if you haven't done that yet.

It's still raining here but we got a brief glimpse of the sun a little while ago before the rain started up again. Glub, glub.

Hugs!

I wonder if the two stem blocks are upside down and possibly reversed.

On 05/06/2016, Edwina said ...

You know... it took me a while, but you are night. I think the stem squares are just upside down. If they're turned around, then the stems would go in correctly to the cherries AND the top stem. I couldn't see it at first either, but it is fixable. But then a God block is always good too!! Hugs... from Petaluma CA

On 05/06/2016, Karen in Michigan said ...

I'm an OCD engineer but I confess there are times I leave in the mistakes. Yes, the stem squares are upside down. You have the corner that has a right angle where the corner that just has a straight end should be. Rotate that square clockwise twice and you'll be all set. Unless you just want to leave it alone.

On 05/07/2016, Sheryl Colle said ...

I'm also doing these - the 6" blocks as they are the quilt challenge for the Evening Star Quilt Guild this year. Yep - the stems are upside down. The flat part at the top of the stem would line up with the flat top of the cherries. But, hey, I dare say that no one would ever look at your finished quilt and immediately say, "Hey! Look at those cherry stems! They are upside down! :)

Still Here

Things got busy so I haven't been in the sewing room or back to blogging. I've had two meetings this week, a lot of laundry to do, shopping, and tomorrow I have a medical appointment.  Maybe Friday, I'll have some downtime and I can write a proper post and maybe even do some sewing. Meantime, Happy Cinco de Mayo (tomorrow), in case I don't have a chance tomorrow to say it.
