Cherry Berry Bin

Cherries 2

Monday was bee day. We met at Sally's and had a great time. Afterwards I was close by to a Hancock Fabrics store. As you may know, all Hancock stores are going out of business, and the story was that they were all having astonishing sales to get rid of all their inventory. So after bee meeting, I dropped in to check it out. I was, to say the least, underwhelmed. Not only was most of the fabric stuff I would not expend the energy necessary to take home, the prices were comical. It looked as if they had marked up their fabric by 40-50%, then put in on sale for 30% off.

Cherries
However, in my perusing, I did find a little cherry print fat quarter that figured would be perfect as the background for my Cherries sampler block. I was right.

I made the Cherries block this morning, but as you can probably tell, there's something not right with the stems. Seams don't match, and the stem ends aren't centered on the cherry tops as they should be. I studied and measured and pondered, and I can't figure out what the problem is.

Lori'scherries
This is how it should look, from the blog of Lori Holt, the author of the book. I'm sure you can see the difference in Lori's stems and mine.

So I got something upside-down or sideways or something. But I'm just calling this one my God Block and being done with it. It goes as is. My back hurts from sitting at the sewing machine, and I'm going downstairs to lie down.

Sampler
But before I go, here's a look at all the 12-inch sampler blocks I have so far. I need at least eight more blocks to make a four-block x five-block quilt. Or if I want it to be five blocks x six blocks, I will have to make 18 more blocks.
We'll see.

Love your cherries block and agree it's fine as it is. Truth be told, on occasion I've used a fabric marker that's an approximate color match to my fabric, and colored in a small area to hide similar goofs. You might consider that if you have a dark brown marker. ;)

Hope your back is feeling lots better. I recommend that you eat and take a pill if you haven't done that yet.

It's still raining here but we got a brief glimpse of the sun a little while ago before the rain started up again. Glub, glub.

Hugs!

I wonder if the two stem blocks are upside down and possibly reversed.

You know... it took me a while, but you are night. I think the stem squares are just upside down. If they're turned around, then the stems would go in correctly to the cherries AND the top stem. I couldn't see it at first either, but it is fixable. But then a God block is always good too!! Hugs... from Petaluma CA

I'm an OCD engineer but I confess there are times I leave in the mistakes. Yes, the stem squares are upside down. You have the corner that has a right angle where the corner that just has a straight end should be. Rotate that square clockwise twice and you'll be all set. Unless you just want to leave it alone.

I'm also doing these - the 6" blocks as they are the quilt challenge for the Evening Star Quilt Guild this year. Yep - the stems are upside down. The flat part at the top of the stem would line up with the flat top of the cherries. But, hey, I dare say that no one would ever look at your finished quilt and immediately say, "Hey! Look at those cherry stems! They are upside down! :)
