All Done

Yesterday I got the hanging sleeve stitched in place on "Slumber Party." I also created a documentation label from a piece of snowman border fabric I found in my stash and stitched it on the back of the quilt. It's all finished, and I'm about to hang it in the foyer. Depending on what Old Groundhog decides tomorrow, we could have six more weeks of winter to enjoy my quilted snowmen.

I really should be using my spoons to do a little housework today, but I think I'd rather spend them on sewing. After all, I already made the bed and loaded and started the dishwasher this morning.

Happy Saturday and Happy February, everyone.

P.S. For some reason, I thought this was February 1. Just looked at the calendar and discovered my mistake. So Old Groundhog can sleep in a while longer before he has to wake up and check for shadows.

Cheers that you finished the snowman quilt before the wintertime is over! I still need to machine quilt Arctic Blast that I made nearly a year ago. Hang my head.

Your Snowmen label is a perfectly adorable finishing touch your charming Slumber Party quilt, too! Finding that border fabric at the perfect time was indeed serendipity!

I have at last sewed the binding on wall quilt #1 and am about to join the binding ends. Hope I can keep up my momentum until it's finished.

Hugs!

A Bit of This and a Smidgen of That

I saw my doctor on Tuesday, and I am happy to report that the sciatic pain has lessened to a great degree. He gave me an anti-inflammatory, a strrrrrroooooong muscle relaxer, and a round of prednisone, which seems to be helping a lot. I still have some back pain, but not that screaming kind like I was having before. Dr. M. also prescribed an antibiotic for an ear infection, which I had a feeling I had.

So yesterday, as I was feeling better, I decided I would get some work done. I intended to make binding and bind the French Snowballs quilt.

Snowball
Unbound French Snowball Quilt

I got the edges trimmed, but after spending over an hour going through my stash for a proper binding fabric, I was not able to find one. I considered piecing one, but that didn't work out either. So now I have to buy fabric for binding. I always love a good excuse to buy fabric.

Hanging sleeve
"Slumber Party" with a hanging sleeve pinned across its top

So then I turned to the snowman quilt (Slumber Party) which still needed a hanging sleeve. I quickly stitched up a sleeve for that.

Dog block
Almost done doggie block

But I wanted to accomplish more than just a hanging sleeve, so I turned to the doggie blocks. I got one almost finished before my real-life dogs decided I had been in the sewing room long enough and it was time to go downstairs and feed them.

So I abandoned the doggie block, grabbed up "Slumber Party" intending to stitch down the hanging sleeve after I had fed the pups, and shut down the sewing room.

However, after laying out dinnertime for Sophie and Skipper, I was tired (doesn't take much these days), so I settled down on the couch and read until time to make dinner for Jesse (penne pasta with chicken alfredo).

Today? I hope to get the sleeve sewn down and finish that doggie block. We'll have to see after that.

Thank you all for your well wishes. Keep your fingers crossed that the improvement continues.

Yes, indeed! I am cheering on your health improvements (better living thru chemistry, doncha know?!) and all you accomplished in your sewing room yesterday. It is no small thing to evaluate fabric after fabric in searching a stash for the right binding fabric. It takes a good eye and uses many spoons.

Cheers, too, for nearing the finish line on Slumber Party!

If I have any backbone I will sew binding on today - after a quick trip to the library to return some DVDs.

Hugs!

i had the same sciatic pain. have you had x-rays and MRI to find where the problem is in the discs? i spent 3 months flat on my back with knees up on the couch (i layed on the floor) to get my back back to it's natural position. also a chriopractor helped me a lot! my doc told me that sitting is the worst thing for my back; it puts the most pressure on the lower back. always flat on your back! i sure do hope you get better. that pain is the worst!

Just in Time for Snow Season

On that day last week when the pain had mostly gone, I got the snowman quilt bound. Then the pain came back and I haven't done anything else. Just waiting for the next respite. Let it come soon.

We were supposed to have light snow last night, but it didn't occur. North Alabama got snow though. I hope we get a little before winter is over. I love snow.

Your Slumber Party quilt is absolutely charming! Even if your area doesn't get snow, these cozy snowfolks will be the perfect winter companions to round out your family - and they don't eat or need to go out-in etc!

We've had rain since yesterday afternoon and some sounded a bit like sleet but there's no wintery mix or mess - just wet. I love snow, too, and hope we have some before spring arrives.

Hoping you feel lots better soon.

Hugs!

Sue - Your Snowman Slumber Party quilt is adorable. I love all the cheerful colors you used & that it can be used all winter long, not just at Christmas. Another project finished. You must feel good about that.At some point, could you share some info. about the pattern. Was it a recent purchased and what company made the pattern. I would like to try & find a copy to make my own quilt. We have not really had any winter weather in the Pacific NW. I was amazed yesterday when I saw crocus' up out of the ground about to bloom. That usually doesn't happen until late March. Today it is 55 degrees & the trees already have buds on them. All this global warming is certainly doing strange things with weather everywhere. You have been unusually cold & we have been so warm that I have not had to wear more than a light jacket outside.

I hate to see you continuing to struggle with chronic pain. I hope you will be seeing your PC doctor soon & that he can recommend a good board certified pain specialist. You need a specialist to get to the bottom of what is causing your back pain. An MRI of your spine can tell them if there is any issues with discs or if nerve roots are inflammed. As we age the fluid in our disc decreases and sometimes this can impinge a nerve root causing sciatica. If a structural issue is ruled out then even though rest may give some relief, it is actually one of the worse things you can do for pain relief in the long run. The back is basically a muscle & the longer a person remains sedentary the back becomes weaker & it is that muscular weakness that leads to chronic pain. As crazy as it sounds walking & doing light physical activity is the best way to resolve the pain. But that is only after the pain specialist makes sure there are no significant issues with your spine. When I first saw a pain specialist, I was so depressed from years of chronic pain left untreated, I had little hope of things improving. Luckily, I was wrong & my pain doctor worked to get my pain controlled by using several different therapies. I had trigger injections to relieve muscle spasm, radio wave therapy to relax muscles that were much too tight and I take a small does of a drug that stops the body's pain signals from traveling to the brain. My pain went from mod.-severe to a very acceptable level. I had to learn to listen to my body and change the way I was doing certain activities. I no longer sew for 6 hours straight. I only do it an hour at a time & then I do something else and go back for another hour after a couple of hours. If I have a really good day, I resist the temptation to exceed my time limit because I know I will pay for overdoing the next day. Everyone is different, but the longer chronic pain is left untreated, the more difficult it can be to get a good response to treatment. After a while the brain actually rewires itself to keep the pain cycle going. So the sooner you can get evaluated by a pain specialist, the better your chances of getting your pain well controlled. Pain specialists usually start out as anesthesiologists in the OR. After that they take several additional years of training before becoming certified as a pain management specialist. They do not push narcotics on patients. In fact, they prescribe narcotics much less often than other types of doctors. There are so many new ways of controlling pain today that these therapies are preferable for most people's chronic pain. I got excellent results from my pain specialist. Most days I do not even think about it and the times I am aware of some slight pain, it is usually because I pushed myself to do too much or did an activity longer than I should have. But the pain is never like it was before I sought treatment and it has been 15 years since I started seeing my pain doctor. I have great hope that you will get a similar response. My pain doctor also treated the chronic pain I had from Lupus arthritis & inflammation, so they can treat different causes of chronic pain. Depending what is causing your different aches & pains will determine what therapy or combination of therapies is used. Once my pain was under control, the depression that goes with chronic pain began to resovle too. You are too talented a person & too nice of a person to have this pain eating away at you & preventing you from doing the things you enjoy in life. I really believe that a good pain specialist could really improve things for you. You might want to look up the names of some pain specialists in your area. If there is a medical school affiliated hospital in your area they are sure to have a pain management clinic program or there are private practice specialists in larger towns. Make sure they are board certified. That ensures that they are trained to the highest standards in their specialty. I hope you won't put this off since the sooner you are treated the better the results. I truly hope your experience is as good as mine was.

It's a Good Day!

Taco:quilt
Inspector Taco

Finally! The pain has lessened and I'm feeling better today. So I'm going to "make hay while the sun shines." No, really. They sun is really shining. The past couple of days have seen sunshine and warmer temperatures, and maybe that's the reason for the bit of pain relief. Whatever it is, I'm just grateful for it, and I'm going to get a few things done today.

For the next little while, Taco and I are going to work on binding the snowman quilt, "Slumber Party." I have the binding made and the edges of the quilt trimmed. So whenever Taco gets finished inspecting the situation, I'll sew the binding on to the quilt. Then we'll all go downstairs, finds something good on Netflix or Amazon to watch, and stitch the binding to the back.

I want to thank you all who continue to visit my blog even though my posts are sometimes few and far between. That means a lot to me and keeps me coming back to post more when I'm up to it.

And thanks too for your comments and suggestions. I read them all, even if I don't always answer. Spoons, you know? I have to use those spoons wisely. One would not think that it would take much effort to type a short answer and send it along, but it's the thinking that's the problem. Coming up with that short answer sometimes takes more energy and effort that you can imagine. Love you all.

Quilt binding
Now, let's get binding.

Enough! Enough, I Say!

Snowmen

I picked the Snowmen quilt and the French Snowballs from Lena yesterday, all quilted and ready to bind, which I planned to get started on first thing this morning. It is now mid-afternoon, and I haven't touched them, except to take the above photo.

Next week, I'm going to see my primary care doctor, and he can find me a new specialist if he thinks I should have one. I'm sick of being sick, and I'm tired of being tired. I want something done, and soon.

I'm lying around here letting life pass me by. I haven't been to church since before Christmas. Nor have I been to quilt guild since September. I missed most of the holiday parties and gatherings that I was invited to, plus a friend's birthday party. I don't go to movies or out to eat. I've even given up browsing yard sales and thrift stores, which I used to love to do.

I seem to now have a sinus infection, in addition to the usual pain and weakness and fatigue and fog that go along with my other conditions.

I went through some photo files from a couple of years ago this morning. I was amazed, and saddened, to see how charming and cozy my house, yards, and porches looked then. Now everything just looks a little drab and tired. Everything needs sprucing. And my back porch?!?!!? It still has a coating of last spring's pollen on it. It seems that every day I look out there and think to myself, I will clean that porch tomorrow. But as I've come to believe, there is no such day as tomorrow. And my pain and stiffness won't let me do things like clean my porch today.

My doctor better find me an answer, or I'm going to hit him in the head with a stick--or something.

Bless your heart and other parts, my sweet friend. I understand your frustration and anger (that's okay) at all you've missed by your lack of energy, aches, and pains. Last week a friend who also has lupus and I were griping about how tired we are after just taking a shower and washing hair that we would rather curl up instead of getting dressed up to go somewhere or anywhere, much less act nice and ladylike after we arrive.

May I suggest that you get Jesse to help you clear off your back porch, he can gently beat the pollen off the fabrics and brush it off of the fruniture, then musclemen can put it all in your basement or garage until after pollen season this year. Once pollen season is over, you'd have only the porch to wash off (or have someone else do that), and you could have your delightful and clean furniture and pillows back out on the porch. That would be one frustrating task taken care of.

Meanwhile, put your nose in a good book, request some books from the library (on-line), and fret not. Do what you can and let the rest slide for today and perhaps tomorrow. It's hard to give yourself permission like this, but realize that our mothers didn't have our unwelcome limitations that mean we cannot keep things as pristine (my mother) as they did.

Hoping and praying that your PCP can point you to a really helpful doctor.

Big hugs, my friend

Pushing Through

The pain is back, but I'm staunch my resolve today to not let it stop me entirely. I spent most of yesterday on the couch, as I did the day before. By late afternoon, I could feel depression settling on me. Can't have that. Today, I have made a batch of oatmeal cookies, cleaned the kitchen up, and worked a little on a jigsaw puzzle.

I am currently searching for a new doctor. Not that I don't like my orthopedist. He's terrific. He has done several surgeries for me and several for family members. But my insurance company has decided they will no longer cover his services, a move for which they would give neither me nor my doctor's office a coherent reason.

Not that going to him at this point does much good, except to get the muscle relaxer and pain pill prescriptions renewed. And my family Doctor could do that. The orthopedist has pretty much told me that he has exhausted his bag of tricks with me.

Well, here's Andy, come to see me. Better go.

So sorry that your pain has returned and I applaud your determination that it not rule your life. Oatmeal cookies seem like a perfect tonic and spirit booster all rolled into one, yummy cookie ... or two!

I think it should be illegal for insurance companies to choose which doctors' care they'll pay for and which they won't pay for. Would our parents and grandparents have put up with that interference in our personal choices? I think not. Hope your friends at church, in your bee, and in your guild - especially the nurses among them - will be able to suggest an excellent doctor who has a cure for you and his other patients in his bag of tricks.

Stay cozy!

Hugs!

The same thing has happened to my sister. She had coverage with a very good and compassionate Dr.and, as of last year, was told her insurance had dropped him. Has medicare changed or is it the whole Obama health care thing? I don't know the answer. We agree our parents had much better care after they hit 65 and they didn't have to wait months to see a specialist.

Your determination and fight is the best. Don't give up searching for a Dr. with answers.

You are in my prayers for this week. Patty Mc

All we can do is keep on. I understand your situation and everyday is mostly a, "get up and do it"
kind of day. We have to keep moving. No matter how little or how much we can do. I am not much of a TV watcher, but I do like to read, bake, and sew. Everyday I make myself do some kind of housework; laundry, vacuuming, cleaning a bathroom, dusting or just picking up. My body aches, as yours. I have learned to sit and vacuum most of the floor. I clean one thing in the bathroom, and do something else the next day.
It sound dumb I know...but I have learned easy ways to take care of my house. I feel good about it.
I hope you feel better really soon. This cold weather does not help with the RA. Hugs

Keeping On Keeping On

Marthastraight
Martha shows one of her recent projects at the first meeting of the new year of the Piecemakers Quilting Bee.

I'm feeling some better this morning painwise. I think being off my feet much of the past week has helped.

I did manage two fun meetings though. Monday, I attended my quilting bee's meeting and Thursday, I went to book club where we discussed The Martain by Andy Weir. If you like a really and truly exciting read, you might check this one out on Amazon and see if it interests you. I loved it.

Aside from those two meetings and the cooking of a couple of meals, I haven't done much this week except read books and watch back episodes of "Sons of Anarchy." But today, I must go to the grocery store. I'm going to wear my back brace and try to make a quick trip of it. Jesse is here to carry up the bags. So maybe if I make it quick, my back pain will stay manageable till I can get back to the couch.

For those of you who follow my book reviews (left sidebar), I'm adding a couple that I finished this week while off my feet. Next on my to-be-read list is The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It's next month's selection to be discussed at book club. Sounds like a good one.

I''m hoping I'll be able to get back to stitching dog blocks for the dog house quilt this coming week. If I'm gentle on my back and the pain stays minimal, maybe my hope will come true.

Love Martha's new quilt and I appreciate your sharing the photo. Cheers that you felt good enough to go to both your quilting bee's meeting and the book club meeting. What good boosts to your sprirt during this very cold week!

Count me in with those who are staying cozy with books. I'm again reading the Susan Wittig Albert "Cottage" books as they're such a delight during the holidays because they involve little mysteries, animals who talk amongst themselves and to any human who is tuned in. This 8 book series is set in the Lake District in England starting in 1905 and are loosely based on the life of Beatrix Potter. Next up is Kate Morton's "The Secret Keeper".

I hope your week of taking it easy allows you to do the sewing you want to do.

Rejecting Resolves

Resolutions-300x300

This year, my New Year's Resolution is to not make any New Year's Resolutions. In the past, I have resolved to 1) lose weight, 2) lose weight, and 3) lose weight. I usually lose 15 or 20 pounds by June, then fall off the wagon and gain most of it back by the next holiday season. So without resolving formally to do so, I will attempt to take off some of the pounds I put on in December, knowing full well that they will return.

Life is short; eat pie when you have a chance.

My back problem has grown into full-blown sciatica. When I try to walk, it feels like a knife stabbing down through my lower back and into my left buttock. No fooling. I have a pain in the ass.

The temperature is predicted to drop to 11 degrees tonight. So that might be part of my problem. Everyone in cold climes, please remember to bring your pets in. They get cold too. You might even bring in anybody else's pets who leave them out. The main thing I hate about cold weather is thinking about all the animals and homeless people who have no warm places to be.

Excuse me now, while I hobble back to the heating pad.

Cold weather would turn me into a hermit for the winter. When it snowed last week, I slipped and fell on the back hill. My wrist is still very tender. In my defense, it never snows here and I was unprepared and unaware of icy conditions. Also, what do homeless people do in really cold climates? A local Hotel opened up a bunch of rooms to the homeless during our cold snap. I'm praying for the homeless and giving to organizations that help them.
I hope you have a scheduled appointment with the doctor for your back. DO NOT put that one off. We need you for our quilting inspiration!
I pray you get relief soon.
Hugs, Patty Mc

i, too, hope you have a medical appt. for that back pain as it just might be something new that is treatable. Perhaps anti-inflammatory and/or muscle relaxer medicines would give you some relief. It's worth a phone call to find out and in this day of cell phones, you can call from the comfort of your heating pad.

Let's hear it for snuggly clothes, Cud'l Dud underclothes, flannel, fleece and all other snuggly fabrics and wearables; for hot foods, tea, and hot chocolate, and for those who care for the needy indoors and outdoors. Oh, and for heating pads, too.

I join in the prayers for your comfort.

It just absolutely breaks my heart to see pets kept outside. Last winter a sweet little kitty kept coming around and we thought he lived in a house behind us but quickly realized that whoever he belonged to, they didn't care and just left him outside. Long story short, I just took him and brought him into our home. That was 8 months ago and no one has ever looked for him. We just love him to pieces and as I sit here typing this, it's 10 degrees out and he's curled up in my lap. I would have never described myself as a "catnapper" but it's the best thing I ever did. We named him Kevin. I hope your sciatica goes away, it's awful!!!! Sending warm and healing thoughts your way!

I also have sciatica pain, from a different source than yours. It is so miserable. Hope you get some relief soon.

Hope this week is a good one for you. I suffer the same Fibro/back stenosis that you do, so you have my prayers!! Sometimes picking up my foot is an effort! I am re-organizing my sewing room thru the month of January. I gave myself a whole month to get it done. Two big boxes in the car to go to Goodwill. Today, I will tackle the East side of the room, mainly scrapbook stuff. I have a stack of half done quilts on the west side of the room on a work table. No new projects until I finish the old ones.
Next...I will pack up Christmas and give away my tree, and many ornaments to my youngest daughter. I am truly downsizing this year.

A Weekend With Sam Crow

My daughter Andy got me hooked on "Sons of Anarchy," and thanks to Netflix and my trusty Roku, I have spent most of the past few days on the couch catching up with the felonious doings of SAMCRO, brothers on bikes and their old ladies.

I did get moving long enough yesterday to have a great lunch at Carrabbas's with my sisters and my Handsome Nephew Jed. Jed treated us all in honor of his mom Joanne's birthday. We ate and discussed books, movies, tv shows, and a subject or two not fit to print.

I made it through lunch without too much pain, but it was returning with a vengeance by the time I got home. I guess my next move will be to seek out a pain doctor. I've avoided that move for a while, thinking of pain specialists as legal drug pushers. But, I swear, the past few weeks I have been more than ready for a drug pusher.

I'm surely not getting any sewing or quilting done. I did get the Christmas stuff all down and boxed up. The boxes are all stacked in the foyer, waiting for Jesse or Andy to have time to take them to the basement. These days, I do stairs only when absolutely necessary.

How delightful to be treated to lunch out thanks to Jed and a belated Happy Birthday to Joanne!!

I hear you about waiting until someone else can take the Christmas boxes where they belong. I do that, too, as it's work enough and tiring enough that by the time the job is finished, I'm done in or done for.

Isn't it lovley to have interesting things to do while sedentary? I'm reading again now that I've spent a good chunk of each day since New Year's packing up Christmas. I thought I'd done things more simply this year, but it doesn't feel that way now.

Here's hoping you find an excellent pain doctor. Since you live near a medical center, perhaps one of your nurse or doctor friends can recommend someone worthy. Hope so.

Wishing you a good week ahead.

Hugs!

LOVED S.O.A.!! But at times have had a problem with the violence, continued on for the story and the characters. There have been some stunners during the years and the final couple of episodes are surely right up there with some of them! But am saddened there are no more seasons. AND I guess there is no where else this could have gone, but was still very, very sad...

So sorry about all your pain. I totally understand. Hope you find a great doctor and sorry you have to change... The weather plays havoc... My GP prescribed two things for me and I have taken neither. I want to be able to know where I am. I've tried similar ones before and it's Lala Land Express. So - ice, heat, Aspercreme... Stay near the heater. Having an insole mold made next week - hopefully relieve some pressure off the neuroma. Thank goodness we can still read! Stay warm! Bless you!
