Full House

10547715_10203567485522273_5435642814573505075_n

For the next ten days, my house will contain three dogs, two cats, one grandson, and me, Lord willing.

Daisy arrived last night for her long stay at Camp SuSu. Lori stayed for a while when she dropped Daisy off, and we had a nice visit. Afterwards, the five furbies and I called it a day. All of us retired to my bedroom, except (of course) Bella. All of the four and me retired to my bed, except Daisy, who took to her new bed immediately. It just fits her.

Sometime in the night, I had to get up and shut Taco out. He loves to jump on the bed, irritate Skipper, and bug Sophie at about that time most nights. After that, I couldn't get back to sleep, so I turned on the light and read for a while until I was sleepy again. I woke up for good at 5:30, so I think I'm going to need a nap this afternoon.

While Anna is sprucing up the house, I'm going to try to get some sewing done. Quiltmaking has slowed to a virtual halt for the past week or so.

I made Cheesy Chicken Spaghetti yesterday. I served it to Jesse for dinner last night and also packed a big helping for his lunch today. Below is the recipe.

Cheesy Chicken Spaghetti

Ingredients

1 whole chicken or chicken pieces, cooked and cut into bite size pieces to make about 2 cups
1 box thin spaghetti or angel hair, broken into about 2" lengths
1 red pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
olive oil or vegetable oil of choice
2 cans cream of chicken soup
1 can chicken broth
2 1/2 cups grated cheddar cheese
salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350.

Saute chopped pepper and onion lightly in olive oil.

Cook spaghetti in boiling water to al dente stage. DO NOT OVERCOOK.

In large bowl, mix chicken, soup, broth, veggies, spaghetti, 1 1/2 cups of cheese, and salt and pepper to taste.

Pour into baking dish that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Sprinkle remaining cup of cheese over the top.

Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes.

How cute Daisy is in her new little bed! Has she stayed at your home since Taco and Bella grew so big? Do they get along well? Hope so!

I sewed the blocks for the baby 9 Patch together Friday, so have cut all of the borders and have sewn the first on. Hope to sew the 2nd borders on today. It should take about 30 min., right? I can keep going for that long. I think I can, I think I can!

What are you working on?

Hugs!

MMM, that dish looks so good. Thank you for the recipe. It is just what the doctor ordered, literally. I just brought DH home from doctor visit with the order that he must eat soft foods for 2 weeks. I will change out the chicken bites to ground chicken for him.
Have fun with your menagerie.

A Rowdy Ramey Gathering

Yesterday I, my sisters, my nieces, and my nephew Reed gathered at Ramey's house to celebrate her birthday. We had cake and ice cream and some of the best punch I've ever tasted. Ramey opened presents before she cut the beautiful cake. She got a load of loot. Ramey refused to blow out any candles; I suspect lack of wind. I croaked out "Happy Birthday" while she was cutting.

After all those festivities were done, the fun part began. We sat for a couple of hours reminiscing with family stories and memories. For instance, Joanne recalled a time when she was a little kid. My Uncle Lawrence was missing in WWII. He was actually in a German prison camp, but the family didn't know that then. My grandmother, Dovie, who was all into spiritualism, even was a member of the Rosicrucians, gathered the family for a Ouija Board session. They asked old Ouiji where Laurence was and Ouija told them Stuttgart. Turns out that's exactly where he was.

But then Ouija's track record gets a little iffy. Being the unusual family that they were, and all fairly young, even my grandmother (Ramey and I weren't even born yet), they decided to ask Ouija how each one of them would die. It told them that my Uncle Alfred would fall out of a tree and die. Well, many, many years later, he did fall out of a tree holding the chain saw he was using to trims limbs. Uncle Alfred was a stubborn man, and I suspect it was his desire to prove Ouija wrong that let him survive that fall and live many more years.

Joanne didn't relate what Ouija told them about the deaths of the other participants there except herself. It said she would die at age 80, an age which is not extremely far away for my sister. I told her not to worry though. If Alfred could survive a fall from a tree with a chainsaw, she can surely survive 80.

Upon examination of the evidence, you might say I have a weird family. I would not be up for an argument on the subject.

Photo caption: Ramey (the birthday girl) on the left and me on the right. We had just returned from seeing the movie "The Lone Ranger" a year or so ago. In our desire to emulate that movie's Tonto, we grabbed the first things available and somewhat suitable to wear on our heads. Ramey's head dress is a stuffed possum; mine is a stuffed bat. A friend of mine said my head gear looks like Rocket J. Squirrel's cap--and danged if it doesn't.

Except Rocky's hat is blue.

What a hoot!!! How did I miss this post yesterday??

When I was a kid, my friend next door had a Oujia board but the "spirit" couldn't spell. When we asked why, "it" said she'd never been to school and didn't know how to spell - oh, and that she was Egyptian. We didn't think to ask how she knew English.

Years later, I was "told" I'd marry Roger Edward Green, but I never met him. Here I am after 42+ years with DH and it seems the Oujia board was wrong about that, too.

Have you watched Rocky and Bullwinkle since you've been an adult? You should. The dialogue has an astounding number of educated witticisms that only adults would catch. One episode was "The Ruby Yacht of Omer Kyam" instead of the proper title of the work that was translated into English by Edward FitzGerald (okay, I looked that up!). Anyway, we got the Rocky and Bullwinkle DVD set for the boys and enjoyed it more than they did.

Hugs!

A Week at Camp SuSu

Hey, Furbies, guess who's coming for a visit next week. MISS DAISY! She hasn't been here in a long time, and I have missed her. Her people are going to visit a brand new niece. They're flying on an airplane and Daisy, who does not like to be "way up high," says she would rather stay with us.

She's arriving on Tuesday night. Before then, I have to go buy her a new doggie bed so she can sleep on the floor beside my bed in comfort. Because you, Skipper Lou Blue, tore up the bed Daisy has been sleeping in** when she visits.

Jealous, are we?

**That's the bed, before Skipper destroyed it, that Daisy is sitting in in the photo at left.

To keep Skipper from chewing up the new bed you're getting for Daisy, can it be put away or UP when Daisy isn't in it? Can someone else get the new dog bed and bring it to you? Hope so.

Wishing that your back pain has been banished.

Hugs!

Miss Daisy is so cute, such a wee little thing. Your such a good God-Mum to think about her comfort while she is staying with you. And Skipper, what a rascal! I know he's still trying to dig his way to China. Maybe he thought the bottom of Daisy's dog bed had a secret door that would get him there! Daisy's arrival should make for an interesting week. We await the next installment and perhaps pictures :-)
Sending prayers for blessings and healing for you. I hope your back is much better today.

You Are Cordially Invited...

Hey-girl-i-heard-you-have-a-backache-so-i-took-off-my-shirt...to my most recent Pity Party. I know my readers get tired of me whining and moaning and complaining. But it's my Pity Party, and I'll whine and moan and complain if I want to.

This whole month has been one great big bundle of pain. And this time it isn't so much due to the fibro as it is to the back pain. It has been truly debilitating. I have spent more time in bed the past couple of weeks than I have in my adult life, I think.

The trouble is that I can spend no more than five minutes, sometimes not that long, on my feet without the pain becoming unbearable. So the bed or the couch are the only places I can find relief.

Yesterday, I determined to get some stuff done, pain notwithstanding. So I did a few household chores, washed and dried a few loads of laundry, changed my bed sheets, and cooked dinner and made Jesse's lunch (he's on night shift this week). Yeah, it hurt. It hurt a lot. But I had made up my mind and I wasn't going to let pain do me it. But it did. Do me in, that is.

By the time Jesse got off to work, I was bent double with pain. I thought, no big deal. I can just get in the bed. As soon as I'm off my feet, the pain will stop. It didn't. In fact, it got worse--and worse--and worse and worse and worse till I thought I was going to have to call 911.

Thank goodness for that Vicodin prescription that Dr. N. wrote for me almost a year ago now. The bottle was still half full, so I took one. It takes a lot of pain to get me to pop a Vicodin. I know that some people take this drug for recreational purposes, but it makes me feel yukky and itchy and drowsy, and I don't like it.

But it deadened the pain a bunch. I slept pretty well last night and woke up practically pain free--until I got out of bed that is. Five minutes on my feet and the pain paid a visit. But I learned my lesson yesterday. No housework today. No nothing that requires extended periods on my feet.

I am going to try to get just a little sewing done. Just a little. Then I'll take to the couch and read until time to make dinner. Rigatoni is planned, the making of which requires maybe 20 minutes of on-feet time. I figure if I space out the cooking among a couple of rest periods, I can make it.

Thanks for putting up with my whining. Y'all are friends extraordinaire.

Oh, I am so sorry your back is giving you so much pain that it's difficult to do much, if anything.

Considering you had such extreme pain last night and because it's Friday, perhaps you should call your doctor just so he knows.

Seems that I remember you have a medical cause for this pain, in which case these measures might be of minimal help, but they cannot hurt ...

In case some of the pain is on one side more than the other, it could be due to kidneys so be sure to drink plenty of water, tea, or lemonade - beverages that abound in water.

Perhaps if your mattress is too soft, that could be part of the problem, too. Before getting a new mattress, have Jesse put a 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" plywood under your mattress. AMIL had to get rid of her pillow-top mattress and get a firm mattress to help her back. She also started using only one pillow rather than the two pillows she was accustomed to. Both measures helps a lot.

I hope there is something easy that will banish the back pain and that isn't Vicodin. I am guaranteed to fall asleep an hour I take something like that. Have you tried an anti-inflammatory like Naprosyn (need food in tummy) or a muscle relaxer like Flexaril? Those might help the pain without making you feel drugged.

Wishing you WELL!

Nancy Nurse over and out!

Hugs!

Hi Susan - I'm so sorry to read that you are having so much pain. You're not whining, you're sharing and those of us who have suffered pain are fully able to comprehend. My version is not back pain, it's gosh awful migrane headaches and the all too frequent kidney stones. See, we all get something right? But pain is PAIN... and when it comes it is very up close and personal! I'm adding you to my prayer list and I pray that you will get relief very soon.
Wishing you blessings and healing mercies from above.

It happens to me so much. A friend and I text back and forth and because of autospell, "pace" yourself has become "pass" yourself. Which we do regularly. We constantly pass ourselves. Sounds as if you passed yourself yesterday, as I also did. Today I remembered the correct spelling and acted accordingly, I think. Hope you feel better soon.

My Roomies

Most nights, in order to get a wink of sleep, I have to shut Taco out of the bedroom. Otherwise he and the dogs keep me awake playing, fighting, and jumping on the bed.

When I open the bedroom door in the morning, Taco is often standing right there, patiently waiting to be reunited with his dog Sophie. After the dogs have their morning trip to the back yard, Sophie and Taco curl up in Sophie's bedroom chair and sleep like babies. Taco is worn out from standing by the door all night. Sophie just likes to sleep.

Skipper takes up his place in the patch of morning sunshine coming through the window. Bella is wherever Bella usually is, a secret place whose whereabouts she does not disclose.

Are pet pals the cutest? Also those who nap places follow the sunshine on the floor as the sun travels across the sky! Wonder what cozy, secret place Bella has found. Does she show up for meals?

We had glorious rain overnight!

I'm embarking on a mini-sewing room clean-up because I cannot stand in front of my small design wall at the present time. I am ready to put my baby 9 Patch blocks and alternate squares up to decide on block layout. The blocks are 13 different fabrics in 4 colors: blue, green, yellow, and pink. I dreamed that my planned outer border fabric was the backing, so may be choosing a different fabric for the outer border.

Twice Baked: Once Eaten

Last night I decided to grill steaks for me and Jesse for dinner on the George Forman. To go with them, I made twice-baked potatoes, which I had never made before. They were delicious. I like potatoes just about any way you can fix them, but it think I've found my favorite way. I'll be making them again. And I think I'm going to try the method with sweet potatoes too.

I wish I had thought to take a picture, because my potatoes were very nice looking. But we had cleaned our plates before photography crossed my mind. So I borrowed a photo from the internet

Recipes for this dish are readily available all over the internet. Here is how I made mine. Preheat oven to 400. Wash potatoes and rub them with olive oil. Place them in the oven (no foil) and bake for 1 hour, 15 minutes (for large potatoes). Let baked potatoes cool to touch. Slice off top 1/3 or so of potato. Scoop out contents and place in mixing bowl. Add a bunch of butter (I used about a stick for two potatoes; the health-conscious may want to use less), a little salt and mash. Add a dash or two of milk and beat till smooth. I didn't use a mixer. I just beat them real good with a spoon. Scoop potato back into skins, mounding up the tops. Cover tops with cheddar cheese. Bake in 350-degree oven for 15-20 minutes.

Susan, sweet potatoes are wonderful twice baked, too. I rarely go to the effort to twice bake either kind, but as I recall, when I did the swedes, the recipe called for chopped cooked bacon and diced green onions along with all the other goodies.

On 07/20/2014, Barbara Anne said ...

Oh yum!!!

A couple of months ago I had 4 potatoes that HAD to be used soon, so I baked all four and put them in the refrigerator. In our dinners that followed, DH made twice backed potatoes using a variety of different ingredients each night. He liked not having to work with hot potatoes and to our amazement, we were well satisfied with just half of a potato for each of us, so thereafter, one pototo/meal was what we shared. The refrigerated baked potatoes kept well for a week, too. I've since baked multiple potatoes just for this use.

Hugs!

Getting Some Stitching Done

SB3

Between preparing meals, doing laundry, shopping for groceries, feeding furbies, and making trips to the vet, I have managed to get a wee bit of sewing done this week. I am working on my French Snowball (working title) quilt in the sewing room and my Granny Squares quilt by hand as I watch tv. (I'll discuss later why I'm working on it by hand.)

6a00d8341cbb0053ef019104a15908970c-400wi

I'm getting very close to having each of the tops finished and ready to take to Lena for quilting. I have all the rows done for the French Snowball and only have to finish joining them. I have two more rows to put together for the Granny Squares and am joining those rows as I complete them.

Below are photos of the fabric I'm going to use to back French Snowballs. I have had this fabric for a long time, and don't remember where I got it. According to information on the selvage, it's a design by Carolyn Taylor Carpin, with whom I am not familiar. But I love the fabric and think it will go nicely with French Snowballs. Although there's nothing snowbally about it, it does look decidedly French--at least to me it does.

SB1

SB2

Skipper wanted me to thank you for the well wishes and let you all know that his injury is healing nicely. He has not yet been able to get back to his China project. But he did remove his bandage shortly after returning from having his procedure done and is acting in all ways normal--normal for Skip, that is. He has some pain pills, but has taken only one so far. I think I'll give him another after his lunch. He doesn't seem to be in pain, but I'm not sure he would tell me if he was.

One last thing: I emailed directions for Martha's Firey Zigzag quilt to Barbara and Debra. If I have overlooked anyone else who asked for copies, please let me know.

Applause for your two projects that are both nearing the finish line!! How perfectly delightful that is for you!

Was your French Snowball inspired by Nicole's Sister's Choice quilt that is similar? I have had this quilt on my to-do list ever since seeing Nicole's. What has held me up you ask? Indecision at what color combination to use. Yours and hers are both done in reds/creams/white and as I start to consider a different pair of colors, the red/cream/white comes to mind. Sigh!

After dreaming of strip piecing my baby 9 Patch blocks, I hope to do the actual sewing today.

It's cloudy and the high is forecast to be 79*F. What bliss!

Poor Skipper

Skipper tore his dew claw again last night. First thing this morning, we were at the vet's. But the doctor had not come in yet, so we were sent home and told to come back at 2:00. We went back at 2:00, got Skip's injury tended, and now we're home. And we're both tired out. skip is removing his bandage (I'm surprised he has kept it on this long. The last time we did this, he had the bandage off before we got our of the clinic parking lot). I'm going to curl up on the couch with Skipper and read.

Aloha and Aloha

Aloha!

Yesterday was the last meeting of our guild year. We take August off and start back in September. The highlight of the July meeting is always our picnic. Everyone brings a dish to share, and the fare is always fantabulous. Yesterday was no exception--two long tables filled with goodies. Our theme this year was Hawaiian luau, to go along with our program. Everyone got a colorful lei to wear, and a few members even dressed Hawaiian-ly. Not me though. I just wore denim capris and a blue shirt.

Our program was brought to us by a wonderful quilter whose name escapes me. Anyway, this quilter moved to Hawaii while her husband was in service. She lived there for 18 years and learned all about Hawaiian quilting and how to do it. Some of her tropical creations are pictured below.

Let's Do Pink Saturday!

I haven't taken part in Beverly's Pink Saturday in a while. I don't take part in a lot of things like I used to. Darned body!

These are photos of some of my flowers when they were better cared for than they are now.

It's so hot here! Temperatures are only in the 90s. I say only because the high humidity is making things seem hotter. Heat indices in the triple digits. And no rain. Oh how I wish it would rain.

I really need to go to the grocery store, but I think we're just going to have to survive on what's in house. Or I might go after the sun goes down.

Happy Pink Saturday, everyone. Go over to Beverly's Blog and check out all the other pinkness.

Oh, absolutely gorgeous flowers! They are certainly a perfect and beautiful addition to Pink Saturday.

I was looking at your books on your left sidebar, and this is the second time in less than a week someone has recommended "All the Light We Cannot See." Someone at church mentioned it last Sunday. I need to add it to my must-read list.

I'm in SW Idaho, and we're hot here---anywhere from 97 to l02. However, humidity for us is about 12%. Still, I think it's a bit uncomfortable. I would be going crazy with high humidity.

Happy pink Saturday,

The Piecemakers Bee gathered Monday morning at the lovely country home of Doris M., for our July meeting. There was good food, fun, and lots of show and tell. Unfortunately, Doris's well lighted family room was not perfect for picture taking. Skylights particularly made lighting a challenge. But here's what I got.

Bee1
Mary's Machine-Pieced Hexagons. Here's a tutorial for this techique.

Bee2
Martha's Star quilt made from a jelly roll. Martha says a jelly roll will make two of these quilts.

Bee3
Martha's Fiery ZigZag Quilt
(I can get the instructions for this if anyone wants them.)

Bee4
Mary Grace's Masterpiece

Bee5
Doris's Tree Applique, made from a precut kit from Nancy's Notions

Bee6
Doris's Sunbonnet Kids
(Several years ago, our guild held a block-of-the-month drawing featuring sunbonnets. Doris won them, and this is what she made from her blocks.)

Bee8
Sunbonnet Closeup

Bee7
This is the block I made.

Bee9
Our bee's latest Quilt of Valor, before the binding

Silly me, I just left my post to see the hexie tutorial and my post has disappeared. Oops!

Again, I am astonished at the creativity and talents of you and your fellow guild members! All of the quilts are wonderful, but Mary Grace's many tiny star points on her Masterpiece are incredible, indeed.

Loved the hexie tutorial and yes, I'd like the pattern for Martha's Fiery Zig-Zag quilt. Thank you!

What great eye candy!

Hugs!

I would also love the instructions for Martha's Fiery Zig-Zag quilt. I always enjoy when you share photos from your quilt guild!
