Cherry, nah-nah-nah, Cherry Pie, nah-nah-nah-nah-nah

There are lots of things, foodwise, that I can resist. But pie isn't one of them. So when this cherry pie caught my eye in the grocery store freezer section, I snatched it up and brought it home. It stayed in my freezer untouched throughout the whole weekend, but today it convinced me to bake it--and have a slice.

Pie is my favorite dessert, and cherry is my favorite pie.

Rigatoni Recipe

I have had a couple of requests for the rigatoni recipe. I got the recipe from the back of a package of Ronco rigatoni, which I threw in the garbage. But I will try to recreate it here, with a couple of changes that I made.

Ingredients

  • 1 package rigatoni
  • Pizza sauce and spaghetti sauce*
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • Small package pepperoni or half of large package
  • Grated mozzarella
  • Grated cheddar

Cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain.

In skillet, brown the beef, drain, then add pepperoni and sauces and heat till sauce is bubbly. *The recipe intructions called for a small jar of pizza sauce. I found that to be inadequate. I had a jar of spaghetti sauce in the pantry, so I added half of that along with the jar of pizza sauce.

Pour meat/sauce mixture over pasta and mix well. Pour into a baking dish that you have sprayed with cooking spray.

Over top of pasta, sprinkle grated cheeses. I mixed mine together before sprinkling for consistency. I think the recipe actually called for a cup of grated pizza cheese. I just sprinkled on the cheese until I felt I had enough.

Place dish under broiler for a few minutes until the cheese is thoroughly melted. Watch closely and don't let it burn.

Thank you for this recipe! As I said before, it looks delicious and am glad you included notes from your experience making it.

What size baking dish did you use? If it makes enough to fill a 9"x13" dish, we'll be sharing some with AMIL next door.

Hugs!

Carmela Soprano Could Not Have Done Better

For dinner last night, I made Rigatoni with ground beef, pepperoni, tomato sauce, mozzeralla, and cheddar. It was so good! Even Jesse thought so and took the leftovers for lunch last night. It pleases me no end when I come up with a dish he likes.

A friend sent DH a package to cheer him up as he deals with Bell's Palsy (nearly 3 mo. now) and the friend's quilter wife surprised me by putting lovely fabric, nicely folded in the box as padding! Most are small pieces of beautiful Oriental fabrics but there was some yardage, too. I have to say, fabric as packing material beats packing peanuts, air pillows, and wadded up newspaper hands down!!

The Feline Invasion

The back of the sofa used to belong to Sophie. Sometimes Taco and Bella still let her use it, but not often. Sophie will stand on the flloor and look at them, then look at me with confusion and frustration in her eyes. Then she'll give a woof and turn around and find a lounging spot elsewhere. Poor Sophie.

Poor Sophie! Is there room for a tall cat tree at each end of the sofa? I guarantee that Bella and Taco will lounge on the highest surface they can reach and the back of the couch will again be open for Sophie. Cats prefer to be superior in every possible way!!

It's good to see these cute, more frequent posts from you! Hope this means you're feeling better most of the time.

I've just worn myself out completely pulling a fusible queen size batting apart in order to cut batting for 3 smaller projects from the batting. Ideally, I'd made the best possible use of the batting but it is a real workout to stretch the fusible batting out flat.

Longest Day

Happy Summer Solstice! Although I am not a summer person (I detest the heat and humidity), this is one of my favorite days of the year. It means we've reached the point closest to the sun and we start the trip back toward cooler weather. The days will begin to shorten, and although there's plenty of hot weather ahead, each day brings us closer to October.

Yellow Squash Patties

This is what I made for lunch yesterday, yellow squash patties. They were so good. The trouble is, the recipe made 12 patties, much more than I could eat. And Jesse wouldn't eat a squash if his life depended on it, even though these patties have cheddar cheese (Jesse's first love) in them. So I put the leftovers in the fridge to have for lunch today. Even so, I'll likely have to toss some of them.

The recipe calls for simple ingredients: squash, onion (I used green onions), cheese, flour, cornmeal, salt, and oil.If you'd like to try it, the recipe is here: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Yellow-Squash-Patties/

You've made me wish I'd gotten yellow squash at the grocery store. I have all of the other ingredients.

Before tossing them, I'd try freezing them as Pat asked about. For similar things that we freeze, we give them a quick heat in the microwave, and back into the frying pan to crisp up the sides, flip, fry side two, serve, enjoy. It's worth a try.

Hugs!

Steamed

You know when the instructions on something you're microwaving says "carefully remove cover." Well, they mean it. I was preparing a Bertolli pasta dish yesterday for lunch and forgot the "remove carefully" instruction. This whopping blister is what I have to show for it. I applied ice immediately after the injury, but stil got blistered. And it hurt like heck.

For the first time in weeks, I spent the morning sewing yesterday. The Fibromonster remains out of town. Except for the constant fatigue, I'm feeling pretty good these days. Of course, anything over about five minutes on my feet, and the back pain kicks in. But at least I know how to control that--stay off my feet.

Today, though, I have a bunch of errands to run. So I won't get any sewing done, and I won't be able to stay off my feet as much as necessary. So I guess I'll wear my back brace, which makes the summer heat even hotter. Yeah, I know. Bitch bitch bitch.

Hi Susan....
So sorry about your burn.... my "sweetie" is from South America and has a wealth of knowledge from his "indian" mother....remember these two for burns that - from my personal experience - do work.
First...if it's just a "quick" burn - like touching a pan or your iron - on your finger...rub it on your head....the natural oil in your hair takes the stinging away...
For a more serious burn like yours....unpeel an onion and wrap a leaf of it on the burned area....I have had onion taped to my fingers and my arm....This will not only take the sting of the burn away but stop it from blistering and even scarring.
I know it sounds crazy but I was very surprised when it worked so well. He even shared this with the head chef on a cruise ship who came to him several days later to thank him as one of the "boys" in the kitchen got a burn and the onion helped.

On 06/19/2014, Sue, the Florida Farm Girl said ...

Ooh, that did hurt!!! Hope it heal up well. Glad you got to sew some.

On 06/19/2014, Barbara Anne said ...

OUCH!!!! That was certainly no fun and I can imagine how it's been talking ugly to you ever since. I keep an aloe plant on the kitchen windowsill and that's my go-to 1st aid for a burn.

You probably didn't leave your ice cube on your finger for very long, but do use ice carefully, too, as the cold will burn skin as surely as heat does. All ice bags used for sprains and such need to be in a washcloth or towel to protect the skin. A couple of decades ago I sewed the edges of a washcloth together for this purpose and did the same with a hand towel for larger ice bags.

What project are you working on? I am making a little something for a friend and yesterday looked thru my entire stash trying to find the right outer border fabric. Oh, my aching back, legs, and feet. This morning I found a fabric that is the best one so far and I have decided to stop looking. This fabric will do.

Hugs!

BQG Crayon Challenge 2014

Guild17Monday was Reveal Day for my quilters guild's every-other-year mini-quilt show/challenge. This year, our challenge was based on crayons. Each participant reached into a box and drew out three crayons, sight unseen. Whatever three colors she drew were to be the main colors in her entry. She could also add black and neutral if desired. The entries could be no more than 200 inches around (i.e., the lengths of the four sides to add up to no more than 200 inches).

Below are photos of just a few of the entries. We had over 70 entries, if memory serves me.

Guild1
This is my entry. I was delighted with the colors I drew: brick red, sky blue, and a pink that Crayola called lavender. This small quilt will hang in my kitchen eventually.

Dog Ears and Scary Books

Sophie

Sophie's ear seems to be healing nicely. But yesterday, Skipper started shaking his head and pawing at his ear. I knew immediately what was wrong. You all know of his ongoing project to dig to China. Well, occasionally in his fervor, he gets dirt in his ear. I took him to the vet the first time, not knowing what the problem was. She gave me some ear wash and showed me how to use it. Yesterday, I swabbed lots of mud from our boy's ear. I think I got it all because he's no longer messing with his ear.

What's next? Don't know. Have to wait and see.

Jesse came in last after visiting with his dad and informed me that he would be moving. His dad and stepmom are fixing up Jesse's Grandma Bibby's house (Bibby passed away in 2012) to move into. Jesse says he's going to move into the house his dad now occupies, one which was built by Jesse's great-grandfather (his dad's grandfather) many long years ago.

He doesn't seem too enthused about moving out, and I have to admit I will be sorry to see him go. But he says he needs to have the experience of being on his own. He's 25 and has always lived with his parents or grandparents. I told him if things didn't work out, he could always come back.

But I'm not going to stress over it right now. He said it would be at least six months before his dad has Bibby's house ready to move into. Lots could happen by then. Nyuh nyuh nyuh.

My newest read: MR MERCEDES by Stephen King, not for the squeamish
or faint of heart

I started reading Stephen King's new book Mr. Mercedes last night. One of my favorite activities since sometime in the 70s has been reading his books. I'm still like a kid at Christmas every time he has a new one come out. It's amazing to realize that his books have been a part of my life since I was in my 20s, more than half my life. Guess you could call me his "number one fan." (Those of you who have read Misery or seen the movie might shudder at that statement. But don't worry. I have no ill intent toward the man.) Thanks, Stephen, for many hours of edge-of-the-seat excitement (and gore).

I know many of you are averse to this type of fiction. My friend and faithful blog reader Barbara, for instance, says it's way to scary for her. But I've loved scary stories and thrillers since I was old enough to read. I remember my sister Ramey and I took turns reading Bram Stoker's Dracula aloud to each other when we were kids. I guess you can just call us The Weird Sisters.

I haven't read Stephen King for quite a while. I started losing interest when he went through that phase with the series of books that were only available through some crazy way (geez, can't even remember the name of the book. . . Roland was the main character so you might be able to "jog" my memory).

Maybe I'll pick up some of his older books & get myself re-acquainted with him.

I'm not a fan of Stephen King but I love to read. Mixed news about Jesse. He does need to learn how to live independently but it seems the two of you have reached a good understanding of how to live together. Hi Susan! Just wanted to let you know that I always wait with great anticipation for your reviews of Stephen Kings new books. I do more audio books now as I have had some retinal bleeds in my left eye and the written page is often hard for me to see, but there is nothing like the feel and smell of a physical book in your hands. You know, I have read voraciously my entire life, but the first grown up 'scary' book I ever read, was Salems Lot! I was hooked and of course started looking for others by this great writer and found Carrie, gobbled it in one sitting and then waited, rather impatiently for news of a new SK book coming out. They were the only two out at the time. but I had never heard of him until my brother handed me the copy of Salems and told me I would love it and love it I did. The next one out was of course the Shining, which scared me as bad as Salems and like you, I was in my early 20's, so he has been a huge part of my life for over 40 years and there is no one I love more (as authors that is, LOL) I've never lost my taste for the hairs he raises on the back of my neck or the turn of my stomach at a particularly gruesome scene and I hope I never do. Glad to know there are others like me. I have two book cases full of his books and many of them I have read multiple times. As his short stories go, do you have a favorite? There are so many that I love, but the two that stick out in my mind are "Survivor" later published as "Lady Fingers" about the shipwrecked doctor, and "The Chattery Teeth" ... Kathy Bate, his scary "Number One Fan" reads the audio and it is incredibly well done in the audio version. Another thing I admire about SK is that he does not allow abridged version of his audio books and I'm so very glad he doesn't. Enjoy, and thanks for your great reviews.

Juicing for Jesse

J1

I have again been remiss with my blogging duties. It seems time just flies and there's constantly something to take care of.

For instance--Jesse got this wild hair idea that he was going to start eating more healthy foods. But instead of adding some fruits and veggies to his meat-and-cheese diet, he vowed to go whole hog--er, uh, whole fruits and veggies. A 10-day juicing fast was his plan. Agreeing that he should be eating more healthy, I agreed to help by going to the store and purchasing the supplies: apples, oranges, sweet potatoes, kale, celery, beets, ginger root, peaches, chard, cucumber, lemons, and I don't know what all. Many of these products have never seen a trip down Jesse Ragsdale's gullet.

J2

I was skeptical for the success of this extreme program, but I didn't let on. I just juiced away for an entire morning, making a mess of my kitchen and dying one t-shirt beet red.

I bottled it all up and sent Jesse off with a work-day's supply of healthy juice, some of which bore the distinct taste of dirt, in his lunch box.

J4
Green, Red, and Orange--all ready for the 10-day juice fast. The green is mostly, well, greens. Kale, spinach, celery, cucumber, lemon juice. The red is mostly beets, with some apples--a good way to ruin good apple juice.

The experiment was a total flop. "I didn't even make it to the interstate before I stopped and bought food," Jesse reported upon his return from work, while removing the untouched bottles of juice from his lunch box. "The more I thought of how that red juice tasted like dirt, the more I knew I couldn't do it. The juice fast is over." Before it ever got started, I might add.

Well, I couldn't drink the stuff either, so it all went down the drain--which made me feel extremely guilty. I have always felt guilty about wasting food, even yukky food.

J3
Orange consisted of an orange, some peaches, sweet potatoes, and a dash of cinnamon. It was actually the most palatable of the three. But still, I prefer my sweet potatoes cooked with butter and brown sugar.

And that was only the beginning. The next day, Sophie had a confrontation with some manner of wildlife, a squirrel I'm presuming, and came inside covered with blood. I thought my dog was probably fatally injured until I got her into the bathtub and washed off some of the blood. Actually, there was only one small cut on her ear, but she was bleeding like your proverbial stuck pig.

I got her ear cleaned, treated with Polysporin, and bandaged (no small task, I assure you), after which I cleaned all the carpet and furniture that she had bloodied in her trip to the bathtub.

Promptly thereafter, Taco barfed. So I cleaned that up too.

That, basically, has been the way this week has gone. Never a dull moment, and not many leisurely ones. Good thing I visited Dr. M., last week. That good doctor put me on some new meds that have changed my comfort level considerably. The horrible, awful, mean, terrible, all-over pain that I was feeling from the fibro has been almost totally gone, and the back pain has been much improved. My energy level has even recovered somewhat.

I'm taking Prednisone for the inflammation, Beclofen for the pain, and Lasik and Potassium for the fluid retention. And so far, so good.

Hi there! How good to see you back here!

Cheers you're feeling so much better! I was hoping to find out you were taking meds that we could take to make us feel better, too. The Prednisone is a short term wonder med that makes everything gloriously better BUT it is a steroid so cannot be used long term. Sigh! Better living thru chemistry!

Ewwww! The combinations of ingredients in those "beverages" makes me shudder. BTW, the dirt flavor is why I don't eat brown rice.

Your never-a-dull-moment sounds like life here with only two cats, my lupus fatigue, and DH's lingering miseries from Bell's Palsy.

Hugs!

Love your blog. I laughed so hard my husband thought I had lost it. Thank you for your entertainment.
PS glad you are feeling better or at
least not in so much pain.

Hurray for the new meds working. You are not to spend your 'feel good' moments juicing. Take time to do the things you enjoy! I know....we will do anything for our kids and grands...I do it too. Really, I am happy for you that things are going so well. Blessings. Patty Mc

Susan,
Wow!!! Your life the last few days made me laugh!! You are a wonderful story teller and maybe you need to join your sister and write a book!!! Keep up the wonderful posts and when you have spare time, keep quilting!!!

I really shouldn't laugh at the juicing situation, but can't help myself !!! It is SO the stereotypical get healthy quick scheme that usually fails. You should send in your story to a sitcom!

Glad you are feeling better on your new medication regimen. I certainly hope it continues!

Hi Susan -
Regarding Jesse and juicing. Tell him not to give up. I don't recommend jumping in with both feet to do a 10 day juice fast. Instead, replacing one meal a day for starters would be best. There are some really good books with juice recipes and a lot on the internet too. One of my favorites is 2 apples, 1 orange, 1 lemon, 1 pear and a big bunch of kale put thru the juicer. It's really quite yummy. With most recipes finding the right ratio of fruit to veggie is the key or otherwise yes it will taste like dirt. Sorry to hear about Sophie's tangle with a critter, I hope she's ok now.
Wishing you blessings,
Linda

So glad you're feeling better! You should have poured all that juice in your flower beds. Just to see what would happen.

Talk about a comedy of errors! Altho, I'm sure it did not seem like a comedy at the time! I'm glad you have gotten some relief from the pain. Hope it lasts for a good lonnnnng time.

I'm so glad you're feeling better, Susan. That fibro cannot be fun. Now, as for that juice cleanse,.......YUK! Does not sound good at all to me.
