An Afternoon Walkaround

Now some kind of beetles (Junebugs, I think) are all over my knockout roses. I don't know if they're harming the roses or not. I'm not going to do anything about them until I'm sure. I  don't want to kill any Junebugs if I don't have to. Those little bugs were favorite toys of my childhood. Anybody else ever tie a Junebug to a string and let him fly around your head?

Blog4
I found this little birdie garden ornament in Hobby Lobby's clearance items. Something like $2.98, I paid.

Blog5
Apparently the Junebugs don't like pink knockouts.

What lovely flowers! The snapdragons in the wagon are so sweet! Did you drill drainage holes in the bottom of the wagon, then fill it with dirt and plant or are the plants in pots?

I know nothing about June bugs and roses, but your local garden center could probably answer your question over the phone. That way, you could get the roses sprayed promptly if the bugs are harmful. We have to spray our flowering fruit trees (apple, pear, plum, cherry) when Japanese beetles invade, usually in June. These bugs look like they have kabuki makeup on and they'll eat the leaves until only leaf skeletons are left.

Hope you can sit on your porch and enjoy the beautiful flowers filling your yard! Have some sweet tea, or perhaps a Long Island tea!

Hugs!

They look like Japanese beetles. Not a good bug. Voracious eaters. Unfortunately, they love roses.

On 05/31/2012, Beverly said ...

Those are definitely Japanese beetles. My mother said they used to call them June bugs. They are drawn to color and fragrance, and they will eat buds until they are completely gone. Whatever you do, don't put up a trap. Even though many do get trapped, the traps actually draw them from other yards.

Your snapdragons are gorgeous, and they look so nice in the wagon.♥

On 05/31/2012, Sandra Hutchins said ...

Japanese beetles and June Bugs are not the same insect. The Japanese beetles are smaller and very destructive. June Bugs are larger, even though they are all colored about the same. We have Japanese beetles every year on our orchard, the crepe myrtles, and the rose bushes. Their grubs live in the ground over winter and eat the grass roots, then the beetles hatch and come out to eat on our plants, and then lay eggs back into the lawn to repeat the yearly cycle. Spray the beetles, put grub killer on the lawn to break the cycle. Beautiful flowers and roses, by the way!

Yep, I looked up photos of Japanese beetles, and that's what they are. Dammit! For a carefree plant, these knockout roses sure require a lot of care. I'll call Steve and tell him to come treat for Japanese beetles. (And yeah, they are smaller than Junebugs. Thanks, al.

Susan, love the antique flower wagon...just perfect by the mailbox! Yes, I grew up tying string to Junie bugs and watching them fly around...good memories.

I'll have to check my knockouts...from a distance all looks well. but maybe i need to inspect more closely before they're all eaten up!

I have to agree with the crowd--those are evil Japanese beetles. They are ravenous. The best thing for them is soapy water. I mix regular dish soap and water in a spray bottle and have at the plants. The soap won't harm the plants but the beetles hate it. Do it early and do it often or you won't have roses or much of anything else.

Doing Nothing

129117628696234476

Yesterday was a real do-nothing day. But after all the cooking and stuff on Monday, nothing was about all I could do.

I watched "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and found it, well, sort of boring actually. With such a great story line to work with, I would think the movie makers could have made it all more interesting. And also ask the actors to speak in voices that could be understood. I mostly followed the movie through body language (and dang! there was a lot of body language).

Ramey came over last night and we partook of yummy leftovers and then watched episode 2 of "Hatfields and McCoys." I didn't even clean up the kitchen later. Just put away what was left of the leftovers and piled the dirty dishes in the sink.

I got up this morning determined to not waste this day. So I made coffee, cleaned up the mess of dirty dishes in the sink, drank two cups of coffee and ate the last of the apple pie for breakfast. Then I caught up on my Words With Friends games and made haste to the sewing room. There I cleaned off my tables from the mess I had left working on Kay's journal. Then I stitched up the backing for the "love Birds" quilt.

Is that enough? Can I stop now? Do-nothing days always make me feel so guilty that I think I have to really do something worthwhile to make up for them. I hope I've made up. Because I don't think I can do any more. I might try to work on the "Mama in the Mirror" hand quilting. I have only two and half more weeks to finish quilting, adding the photo blocks, binding, sleeving, and labeling before the June guild challenge show. So I guess I better get a move on.

Love the photo and the caption! I understand it so well, too.

That is one way going to work helped. You got home, did a few tasks, and then it was free time. Guilt free. Now instead of work hours, I have limited spoons. That stinks! The "I shoulds" whisper inside my head no matter what I've already done.

I was just thinking that I'll have no UFO progress to report if I don't get busy today but I'm kind of tired from all this day has already held. I'm open to suggestions!

Cheers for apple pie for breakfast and for dishes that wait!

Hugs!

Susan, you sound like me! If I really take it easy, have a lazy day, I feel like I need to move mountains the next day! We both know better, don't we? I am so guilty of pushing myself on good days and then suffering the next. I hope I'll learn soon! Take it easy.

Memorable Memorial Day

Hyd0
French hydrangeas from my back yard

Dinner was great last night. All the family that is in driving distance was here, except for Buffy and Phil--they had other plans. We had enough food to feed "Cox's Army," as my mama used to say. I have no clue who Cox is or how big his army.

I cooked all day yesterday. I decided I would just cook everything in the house I could find and then we'd have lots of leftovers for the rest of the week if anybody wants to come by and share them. Ramey's coming tonight for the second episode of "Hatfields and McCoys."

I enjoyed the first episode. Ramey's criticism was in the way the characters talked. She thought that didn't ring true. I had the idea that the homes that they showed seemed a little too primitive. My recollection from research was that at least the home of Anse Hatfield was quite large and attractive. Here's what I found this morning.

  387727_2582639297109_1588278016_2360046_734694178_n

Anse Hatifield's Tug River home (this must be the one they were portraying in last night's episode).

Mccoy1
Reproduction of Randal McCoy's home

So I was correct in remembering that at least one of these families lived in a much larger, more modern house at some point.

I truly overdid the activity level yesterday. I guess I'll never learn that I just can't do what I used to could do. I hate that. But today is going to be a low-activity day--reading or maybe I can find a movie to watch. Been wanting to see "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." So maybe that.

I hope all of you had a good holiday with lots to smile about. I surely did.

Oh, I have serious hydrangea envy! I LOVE blue hydrangeas and cannot seem to grow them anywhere I've lived. What is your secret or your proven method for success? I love the pitcher you've put the flowers in, too.

Since you're from a family of story-telling writers, I look forward to your jumping in with a book you've written. Go for it!

We had a very pleasant Memorial Day and I topped it off by getting out another UFO from 1999 that needs applique. Not that putting those three leaves on Summer Rose made me an expert, but the leaves haven't fallen off yet, so that's something. Stay tuned!

Hugs!

Hey Susan,
I enjoyed watching the Hatfields and McCoys, too. My only criticism was the fact that sometimes the actors mumbled/slurred through their lines. So there we a few parts where I didn't know what they said. Loved it though! Can't wait for part 2 tonight!

I live within 4 miles of the replica and drive by there all the time.

Remembering Them

8228PatrioticFlowersFirst I want to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day. As many of you know, I'm a complete and utter dove when it comes to war. I don't believe in it, I hate it, I think all wars are atrocities. That said, I do love and appreciate each and every person who serves our country as soldiers of war. I can't even imagine how horrible it must be to have to go to war--not only for the ones who serve, but especially for their loved ones at home who have to wait. What bravery and courage they show.

God bless all our soldiers--past and present. Today, let's remember and appreciate those who never made it back and pray that the very near future brings an end to wars--all wars all over the planet. There has to be a better way.

My family is coming tonight for a barbecue supper. Then Ramey and I are going to watch the first in the three-episode miniseries on the History Channel about the Hatfield and McCoy feud, starring Kevin Costner as Devil Anse Hatfield.

As you might remember, I've been contemplating writing an historical fiction book about this, with Roseanna McCoy being the central figure in my story. I've done tons of research, even started an outline, but that's as far as I've got so far. Maybe watching this series will spur me on.

Now I'd like to point you toward the blog of my friend Deb. Like me and several others of us, Deb suffers from fibromyalgia. She has written a great article on this silent monster. If you have fibro, or think you might have it, or know someone close to you who has it, I recommend you read Deb's article. It explains so much. I felt like I was reading about me.

Thank you, Susan. I hope that what I wrote was useful. Dealing with this 'monster' is hard. People don't understand about it, how it changes us.
I lived behind the 'Iron Curtain' for 7 years. It was, at times, scary. My 2 oldest girls were escorted to school with armed soldiers on their bus and tanks in front and back of the bus. This was when a disco had been blown up with many of our soldiers in it. Living there was an experience many of us will never have
Have a wonderful bbq with the family.

Still, as you have written, I appreciate the service of those in the military, past and present, and the sacrifices of their families, too. I wish them all safely home now. Our flag is flying.

And speaking of family wars (Wasn't that a good segue? - LOL!)I recorded Part One of "The Hatfields and McCoys" and have the OTHER 2 parts set to record. This weekend, I intend to watch all three! LOOOOVE YOU!

Been Journaling

I have a sinus infection or something. Eye swollen, pressure and pain in face. So I didn't go to church today. Instead I stayed home and worked on the next work in the circle journal round robin I've been participating in. (Yes, I know I just ended a sentence with a preposition. I do it all the time, and I think it's fine.)

This is Kay's journal, "Travels By the Sea." All the pages are lovely--and fun. I enjoyed doing my spread, except that I had three little doggies fussing at me the entire time, wanting me to come downstairs. They, and especially Sophie, do not like me working upstairs. Anyway below are photos of my "Travels By the Sea" spread.

UFO Progress Report

Names

Mary did a great job with the embroidery on the "Love Birds" quilt, didn't she? However, I haven't made it to the quilter with it yet. I found that I didn't have enough of the fabric I planned to use for the back. In fact, I don't have enough of any fabric for the back. Of course, I could piece a back, which I often do, but for this one, I sort of want a one-piece back. So I guess I have to buy fabric--oh, horrors! Isn't it a pain when you just have to go to the fabric store? No. I guess not.

Below are Blogless Barbara's contribution to this week's progress report. More work on her seasonal block swap pieces, and a little preprinted heart panel that Barbara has had in her stash for decades. Now it's a sweet little doll quilt or wall hanging. Great work Barbara.

Below is, as usual, Mr. Linky. I really enjoy visiting your blogs each week, so don't forget to link up--even if you're not an "official" member of this UFO Challenge. In fact, I'm thinking seriously about changing the challenge and just making it a Progress Report of whatever we happen to be working on. It can be UFO or something entirely new that you've just begun or your current project in progress. What do you think?

Thank you once again for posting my UFO progress, wee projects that they are.

Your woes about having to go to a quilt shop certainly sound like Brer Rabbit pleading not to be thrown into the brier patch. I can still hear "Born and bred in a brier patch and it can't hurt me!!" from Song of the South. Enjoy your visit to a quilter's candyland and all of the delicious visual treats that await you! Good luck on finding just the right backing fabric that pleases you.

Sweet Blossoms

I can't get going today. The doggies and I (three of them now) slept late, and I'm still in my pajamas. Daisy came last night. Lori's dad is very ill and she's in Florida with him. Prayers for Lori's family appreciated.

On Tuesday, after I picked up "Love Birds" at Mary's, I went on over to Cahaba Heights and visited the Leaf and Petal garden shop. Oh what beautiful plants and flowers they have!

I got the red petunia basket in the photo, already planted. I also got some zinnias and planted them in pots yesterday.

I'll be sending some UFO progress photos today. I keep telling myself that every little bit helps.

Hope your spoon drawer refills quickly or you find a grocery store and drug store that deliver, a hair stylist who makes house calls, and a telepathic doctor who will get the psychic message to renew your Synthroid Rx!

Healthy, Happy Doggies

Sophieb:w

Nothing but good news from the vet's office yesterday when I picked up the doggies. Dr. H. said that's Skipper's eye was back to perfectly normal. No scratches remained. I guess Sophie and I are pretty good doggie docs, although I feel like I got more of Skipper's eye ointment on me and the rest of his body than I got in his eye. The boy does not like to be doctored.

They sure were glad to see me. They gave me no trouble about getting in the car. But Skipper would not sit on his side. He insisted in sitting in my lap, and nothing I could do would convince him that driving that way was dangerous and that it might even get us a traffic ticket if an officer saw us. He wasn't taking any chances of me getting away from him again. Sophie rode beside me with her muzzle up against my shoulder.

Sophie got a haircut and nails filed. She looks much more comfortable now. I know, I know, in the photo above she looks humiliated and sad, doesn't she? Don't buy it. That's just her look for when she wants someone to feel sorry for her and give her a treat.

Mary has the "Love Birds" quilt embroidery done. I'm going to pick it up this afternoon. I'll take it to the quilter Thursday, probably. Lena's shop is closed on Wednesday, and I don't have the backing ready to take it today.

Cleaning lady supposed to be here by now. But long ago I learned that she'll be here when she gets here. I think I'll go and have another cup of coffee.

Cheers that Skipper's eye has healed and that he is free of the annoying collar that protected it!

I had to laugh about Skipper sitting in your lap and Sophie resting her chin on your shoulder when en route home yesterday. Of the two dogs that made long car trips with us, both were convinced that a car seat without one of their humans sitting there would NOT go where the rest of the car went. I shared a bucket seat in a Vega with a big mutt when we drove from Memphis to Richmond before we had kids. We had a used Suburban when out family of four drove from Waco to Memphis with our beloved Basset hound, Daisy. She was in her special bed at the back of the Suburban for about two minutes into the trip. Then came a scramble over luggage (visualize those short Basset legs!) to get into the middle seat between the two boys and that's where Daisy rode. Apparently snuggled between two boys is the very definition of Dog Heaven!

Hugs!

Yesterday

Mon3

Sunday was full of activity. First to church, then fellowship spaghetti luncheon after. Full and happy, I delivered the "Love Birds" quilt to my friend Mary. She's embroidering the couple's names on the quilt. On the way home, I stopped along the side of the country road that leads from my house to Mary's and picked wildflowers. I got a pretty bouquet for my dining room table (see above).

At home, I rested for a while and then took the doggies for a walk. Back home, with doggies settled inside, I went back out and watered all the thirsty plants. Dragging hoses all over the yard wore me to a frazzle. I was red faced and soaking wet when I got back inside. The dogs wanted to play, but I had to offer my regrets. I could hardly move.

The fibro pain was intense last night. I don't know if it was all the activity or if the Fibromonster just wanted to growl. I took 800 mg. of ibruprofen to get the pain under control and slept fairly well. But this morning I awoke with a burning, churning tummy from the megadose of ibuprofen.

By 8:30 this morning, I had both dogs delivered to the vet's office--Sophie for grooming, Skipper to check his eye inury. I'll pick them up this afternoon. They were so pitiful with not wanting to go, they made me feel awful. I asked them if they wanted to go for a ride. Now Sophie always wants to go for a ride, but this time she wouldn't even come down to the basement to get in the car. I had to force her. I've always suspected that dog could read minds.

At the clinic, when the assistant came out to take them back, they both cried and cried and looked at me with their pitiful little eyes, just begging me not to leave them at the mean old vet's office. I almost cried. I told the receptionist next time I'm getting cats. But she said cats are no better at the vet's.

Mon2Oh, and my chair came Saturday. See.

Today is laundry day.

What lovely wildflowers! Love the tablerunner and pitcher-vast, too!

You certainly chose a wonderful chair to cozy up in, recline, and snooze. Sophie has the right idea!

Bless the sweet hearts of your forlorn 4-legged kids. I am here to testify that cats - armed with weapons on all four feet - are absolutely worse than dogs at going to the vet. Cats have to be in carriers to protect the car interior and all humans and they clearly let you know that hate you. Dogs put you on a guilt trip, hang their heads, and feel so sorry for themselves but that is MUCH easier to deal with - at least in my experience with both cats and dogs.

Soon you'll have eternally grateful dogs back at home and you three can each take a relieved nap in your favorite spot!

Hugs!

My Zoey gives me the sad eye when I take her to be cliped and the vet.

I can assure you that cats are just as bad. I had a cat who would hide underneath the house every time it was time for a Vet. appointment. We missed a few appointments that had to be rescheduled. Another one howled the whole way to the Vet. Can you imagine stopping at a traffic light and having people look because they can hear the cat howling over all the engine noise and having the windows rolled up? Sounded like she had been run over! I'm sure they were wondering where that poor, pathetic, injured kitty was.

On 05/22/2012, Karen in Michigan said ...

Cats are no better, I can assure you. When Pumpkin was a kitten, he got his shots while sitting in my lap because the nice older vet recognised his need to remain in Mommy's lap. And when he got his boy parts snipped and had to stay overnight, he lept over the counter and into my arms when I picked him up. Smokey Joe got all of his shots while sitting on my shoulder. See references to the nice old vet above. And now he does his best to convince me he's too cute to leave when I have to go to work.

Old Friends

Library - 16255Sat1
A Piece of Bibbi

I had a wonderful lunch with an old friend from work yesterday, Carolyn S. We talked and talked and talked, mostly about our health issues. But we also updated each other on anything we knew about other friends we had worked with at Southern Progress. Then we had dessert.

Before lunch, however, I stopped in at the estate sale that my friend Billie's daughter-in-law was having. You might recall that Billie was Jesse's other grandmother and that she passed away a few weeks ago. Billie was a queen of shopping. That girl loved to shop, especially for clothes, shoes, and costume jewelry. So there was lots of all that at the sale. I found the cross in the photo above and bought it. I just wanted something to remember my friend by.

Estate sales always make me a little sad, but this one was the worst. I kept thinking how much Billie would dislike all these people strolling through her house and going through her things. There was so much of her spirit in that house. And of little Jesse's, who spent so much time there as a little kid. I even came across a framed photo of Jesse and Sophie. And oodles of toys that Billie's shopping mania had acquired for Jesse when he was a child.

But time marches on, as Truvey said in "Steel Magnolias." And as I recall, she added, "And eventually you realize it marches right across your face." Yep.

I'm waiting now for the delivery of "the chair." It's supposed to be here some time before 12:30. I have it's spot all cleared out and vacuumed.

Now let's visit Beverly's Pink Saturday Blog Party and see what she's serving.

Big hugs! It is a situation that tugs at your heartstrings when you wish to turn back the clock and once more be with a family member and friend who is gone. The cross is a lovely memento of Bibi.

When many of my grandparent's and aunt's things were auctioned I just could not bring myself to go. I have plenty of things from that household but not everything, of course.

I hope your wonderful new chair arrived on time and that you're enjoying it right now!

Love the photos of Sophie and Skipper's back feet! He does tunnel in wherever he is.

UFO Progress Report: Week 20

Love Birds3

Yesterday, I finished the main part of the "Love Birds" quilt top for my friend's granddaughter's wedding. I'm going to have a friend who has a fancy embroidery machine to embroider the couple's names and wedding date across the center of the quilt in black. Then I'll take it to the quilter. Then I'll scallop the edges of the border and bind it and make an envelope/label for the back. So you see, I'm not nearly done yet, but I feel like I've reached a milestone anyway.

And I'm right pleased with it, except maybe for the size. You see, it's 67 inches square. I hope that's not too large for a banner. Well, it's what they're getting; no going back now.

LoveBirds2

I'm having lunch with a old friend from work. I haven't seen her in ages, and I'm looking forward to it. But I better run get ready or I'll be having lunch at Ruby Tuesday in my pajamas. Might embarrass my friend.

Below is Mr. Linky. Please add you link so we can visit you and see what project/s you've been working on.

Backyard Bloomers

Backyard bloomers 1

These blackeyed Susans come up every year in the wooded area in my backyard. I never planted them, but each year, they are a little fuller and brighter. I just love them. I took this photo after a couple of days of rain, which had bent them over. I think they're pretty much standing back up now.

Backyard Bloomers 2

When Vann and I first moved here in 1996, Vann wanted to fill the entire lot with native oak leaf hydrangea. So we went digging. We found and dug up about half a dozen small plants and brought them home and planted them in the back of the house, which is now the wooded area. Four of them remain. Above is one of them. We never got around to filling the lot with them. In fact, the six were all we ever planted. I'm glad we did. I think of our treasure hunt to find them every time I look at them.

Skipper's digging has made necessary the planting of more shrubbery in the backyard bordering the pebble walk area. I don't know why he won't go away from the dooryard to dig, but he won't. I think I'm going to get Jesse to help me and plant some, maybe, azaleas there--instead of paying Steve to plant them. I think we can do it if Jesse does most of the digging.

That terrier has dug a pure trench all the way down the side of the walkway. It's a mess. Does anybody know Cesar Milan's phone number. I need some serious dog whispering around here.

My knockout roses, which caught a fungus or mold or something, are slowly coming back to life after Steve sprayed them. New growth on all of them, but very few blooms.

Note to Deb: I see the button you're talking about now. I'm going to do some experimenting and see if I can learn to work it. Thanks.

Note to Jan: No, I didn't spin, but I was sorely tempted. It looks like so much fun when Skipper and Sophie do it.

How sweet that your oak leaf hydrangeas bring such wonderful memories to your mind each year!

We have Black-eyed Susans, too, but they're not in bloom yet. They were here when we arrived and I love them, too. They have convinced me that perennial flowers are just the best because they do their thing whether or not we have the spoons to tend them as annuals need.

If you have a sheltered area near your back porch and if you like gardenias, they're wonderful all thru the blooming season. These days there are also ever-blooming hydrangeas so those might be a delightful addition to your landscape.

I received a Stargazer lily (from Kroger) for Mother's day and it is beautiful (shades of pink and cream) and has a heavenly fragrance. Hope it is a perennial as our Asiatic lilies are.

Hugs!

Susan, it's good to see what an oak leaf hydrangea looks like. I answered an ad last summer for a free shoot from an oak leaf hydrangea tree. It was a tiny thing but grew until the deer nibbled it down....twice. This year it's covered in chicken wire in hopes it will grow. I love yours and hope mine will get to that point!

Glad I could help with the disappearing post. Hopefully, what you try will work next time.

Showtime! (I'm Going to Get This Posted If It Kills Me!!!!!!)

Bowls

I have lots to show, which I already posted yesterday and lost it all. I'm still not over my frustration and anger from that, but I'll try to be nice here. First things I have to show are my bowls that Andy gave me for Mother's Day. Those are my MD cards beside the bowls, one from Andy and one from Jesse and the doggies. Can you tell the difference?

Thanks, Deb, for your advice on how to retrieve lost posts. I'm thinking you probably mean my "history" button. Right? Wish I had thought of that sooner. Couldn't find the post under history today.

So now, on with the photos from quilt guild meeting on Monday. Our clotheslines weren't quite as full as usual, but the quilts that were hung were well worth photographing. I don't think I got them all, but then I never do.

G1
May's Blocks of the Month, Disappearing Four Patch. We had 43 blocks turned in, and they were won by Evelyn C. Congrats, Evelyn. That's here second straight win; she also won blocks in April, lucky lady.

G2
These are Nancy M.'s little quilts. The one on the right shows what can be done with twenty Disappearing Four Patch blocks. Thanks for bringing this, Nancy. I can't wait to see what Evelyn does with the blocks she won.

G8
Jane S.'s three-years-in-the making Charm Quilt (no two charms the same). I'm loving the scrappiness and beautiful work of this one.

G3
I think I was "visiting with my neighbor," as my fifth-grade teacher used to say, and not paying attention when the quilter/s talked about these two beauties. So I don't know who gets the credit. But they're great quilts.

G5
Same here. I don't remember who belongs to this quilt, but I do remember that I loved it and it reminded me of one of the first quilts I ever made, although the work on this one is much better than my early effort. If you want to compare the two, go HERE.

Can you believe that Typepad has done it again????? Lost my copy. And even though, I've been saving after every photo post, I still lost the last several photos I posted. If I don't put my foot through this computer screen before I'm done, I'll be amazed.

  G6
As I have already said a couple of times before, I don't remember who made these quilts nor any of the others that I will show in the rest of this post. Or rather, I'll try to show them if Typepad will stop screwing me. I don't know if it's the stress of trying to get these photos posted or if I just wasn't paying attention and was instead signing up for a workshop and purchasing homemade candy from our guest speaker. (Now I'm sure I wasn't paying attention and that I need new glasses. Lisa A, who made the quilt on the left [Lorrie T. made the one on the right], had to tell me about the deer. I never saw them.)

Changing Browsers in midstream. I wasn't able to post anymore photos, so I changed from Safari to Foxfire. Seems to be working ok--for now.

  G7
I really like this Cowboy Tumbler quilt. I have some friends in Georgia who would love this. I'll show you the cowboy quilt I made for them sometime, if I can find the photo. But I digress.

G10
The quilter who made this brought it to show what can be done with just one of the blocks featured in last month's Block of the Month.

G9
This homemade fudge and peanut brittle are products of Shannon Armstrong's Aunt Della's recipes. Shannon was our speaker yesterday. She talks about her Aunt Della and the antique quilt collection her aunt left behind. She brings quilts and photos (and homemade candy), and it's a very interesting talk. Thanks, Shannon.

Now I think I'll go and lie down.

Love your MD gifts and cards!

The quilts are a delight, one and all, but the one that has my heart is the Cowboy Tumbler quilt because I spied International Harvester fabric in it. My Daddy worked for IH.

I'd like to see the instructions for the Disappearing 4 Patch blocks, if you have them.

Now, a pox on the evil grimlin at work in Typepad! Be gone, I say!! Thanks for persevering and getting this post finished at last. You deserve a nap followed by a lovely wine of your choosing.

Hugs!

Susan, I don't think it's the History button. Look at the row of symbols just below the Rich Text and HTML tabs that's above the blank post body. You'll see a round swirling arrow button called Restore Auto Save Content. It's right above the background color button. That's what I click and my post returns. Hope this helps. Sorry you lost your post again! That's definitely no fun!

It's so aggravating when the blog posting site doesn't cooperate.

I made the deer quilt on the left and Lorrie T. made the one on the right. We didn't know the other was working on it. I sized mine down to 2" from the original pattern's 3". It is the Quilt in the Headlights pattern from Dare to be Square Quilting.

Please Be Patient

I have spent most of the morning posting my blog entry with photos from guild meeting yesterday. Just as I was nearing the end and getting ready to publish, Typepad farted, as it were. It's gone. Every word, every photo. Now I'm just too frustrated to do construct it all again right now. Maybe later today, but maybe not till tomorrow.

I usually save a draft every few minutes while I'm writing a blog post, since this isn't the first time this has happened. But today I didn't.

What a shame that Typepad lost your nearly completed post! I can only imagine how totally annoying that must be.

I remember how it was on early computers when you had to actively "save" every few minutes. We were at seminary then and somebody posted a sign by his computer that said, "Jesus saves!"

Do something you enjoy or is fun and relaxing before trying again. I can wait and will enjoy the quilt show when it's available to see.

Hope it's not as hot and humid there as it is here. Phew!

Hugs!

Susan, maybe you already tried this and it didn't work. But I wanted to mention it just in case. Since we have Typepad, I know exactly how losing all of your hard written post can happen. It's frustrated me many times. But...do you ever click the button (in the line-up of buttons just above the post) that is sort of a "retrieve last page" type of button? It's a circling green arrow (I think). Anyway, that will retrieve the page you were on before you saw the post GONE! It's worked for me several times, and I love it. Try it next time or do a practice post first to test it out.

Mama Mia!

I hope all you mamas out there, and you who have or have ever had mamas, are enjoying a wonderful Mother's Day today.I must say, mine is a little calmer than yesterday was.

6a00d8341cbb0053ef0133f24e1260970b-320wiAt left is my sweet and talented mama, I think she was about 19 in this photo. Mama left us in 2005, and we miss her every day. I miss shopping trips with her, although in her final years, when I already suffered from fibro, those shopping trips could be a pure trial for me and my patience. But I'd do it all again to have her back. We all miss her at family dinners where she would come in, eat, and then ask who was going to take her home. Joanne misses the Scrabble games, of which I think Mama won about 95% of the time. Ramey, well I don't think Ramey and Mama ever really understood each other. Come to think of it, I don't think anybody every really understood either of them.
Me, Andy, & Kenney
Me and my wee bairns, a cat, and a couple of stuffed bunnies, circa 1970.

Skipper Report: The doggie is miserable. He hates that "cone of shame" thing. He can't get through the doggie door to go outside, he can't dig, he can barely eat and drink from his bowls. Heck, he can't even scratch his butt properly. So every now and then he pitches a real Skipper fit and tries to remove the thing. Rolling and pawing and grunting and groaning. It's alarming. Three times during the night last night, he did it. I finally got him calm enough for me to get a couple of hours sleep by putting him beside me and petting him and rubbing him till he went to sleep. This week is going to be a test for both of us.

We made it to the cemetery yesterday, and decorated Mama's and Daddy's graves with some really pretty artificial red roses. Ramey took a notion to retrieve a pretty pot that held Daddy's flowers from last July 4, his birthday, and a wasp who had taken up residence therein stung her on her hand. She grabbed a gardenia blossom and started rubbing it on the sting. When I asked her 'sup? she said that someone, maybe a native person or an artist or somebody, told her that whenever you get stung to rub the sting with any kind of flower. Not sure that worked. Her hand had already swollen a bunch by the time we got home. Thank goodness, she wasn't allergic. She left the pot at the cemetery, along with the wasp.

I didn't make it to the baby shower, but here is the quilt (below) that I gave to Ashleigh when she got back to her mom's house next door. I also included in the gift bag a pair of teeny tiny pink bunny slippers. I had a nice visit with Ashleigh, her husband Thomas, and her mom Jennifer.

6a00d8341cbb0053ef0154329598e5970c-400wi
Zoe's quilt. She'll be here to enjoy it in July.

Quilt Guild meeting tomorrow. I have to get everything packed up, and then I think I'll spend the rest of the day reading. I'm reading The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. I'm only about 100 pages into it, but I knew from page 1 that it was going to be a wonderful book--and it is. I'll review further when I've finished it.

Happy Mother's Day to all.

Hope Ramey is suffering no ill effects from that sting.

Zoe's quilt is just wonderful and I imagine her Mommy, Daddy, and Grammie were way past delighted to receive such a gloriously pink and loving gift! Well done!

Enjoy your guild meeting. I'm awaiting more wonderful photos from show and tell.

Happy Mother's day to you!
