French hydrangeas from my back yard
Dinner was great last night. All the family that is in driving distance was here, except for Buffy and Phil--they had other plans. We had enough food to feed "Cox's Army," as my mama used to say. I have no clue who Cox is or how big his army.
I cooked all day yesterday. I decided I would just cook everything in the house I could find and then we'd have lots of leftovers for the rest of the week if anybody wants to come by and share them. Ramey's coming tonight for the second episode of "Hatfields and McCoys."
I enjoyed the first episode. Ramey's criticism was in the way the characters talked. She thought that didn't ring true. I had the idea that the homes that they showed seemed a little too primitive. My recollection from research was that at least the home of Anse Hatfield was quite large and attractive. Here's what I found this morning.

Devil Anse Hatfield home, no date or location found

Anse Hatfield's funeral at his home

Anse Hatifield's Tug River home (this must be the one they were portraying in last night's episode).

Reproduction of Randal McCoy's home
So I was correct in remembering that at least one of these families lived in a much larger, more modern house at some point.
I truly overdid the activity level yesterday. I guess I'll never learn that I just can't do what I used to could do. I hate that. But today is going to be a low-activity day--reading or maybe I can find a movie to watch. Been wanting to see "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." So maybe that.
I hope all of you had a good holiday with lots to smile about. I surely did.

Oh, I have serious hydrangea envy! I LOVE blue hydrangeas and cannot seem to grow them anywhere I've lived. What is your secret or your proven method for success? I love the pitcher you've put the flowers in, too.
Since you're from a family of story-telling writers, I look forward to your jumping in with a book you've written. Go for it!
We had a very pleasant Memorial Day and I topped it off by getting out another UFO from 1999 that needs applique. Not that putting those three leaves on Summer Rose made me an expert, but the leaves haven't fallen off yet, so that's something. Stay tuned!
Hugs!

Hey Susan,
I enjoyed watching the Hatfields and McCoys, too. My only criticism was the fact that sometimes the actors mumbled/slurred through their lines. So there we a few parts where I didn't know what they said. Loved it though! Can't wait for part 2 tonight!

Oh same here ,Judy. Both Ramey and I had trouble deciphering some of the dialog too. The sound wasn't great.

Barbara, my secret to success: Put it in the ground and hope it lives.

Your hydrangeas are beautiful! I can't believe I missed the first part of the show. : ( I have been so busy working in the yard I haven't been watching television. I'm going to see if it is on demand and catch up.
(How is it I am even behind with tv shows? sigh

Whew! We watched part one & liked it but had the same problem with some of the jumbled talking. I thought it was my deaf ear. Liked it, tho' & am looking forward to Part Two!

I found your blog while searching on images of the real Hatfields & McCoys today. I am really enjoying the series on the History Channel and thank you for posting these interesting photos. I hope someday to visit the area and see all the historic sites that are available. I am a quilter and cross-stitcher from Arizona. :)

The one photo that you have posted there is NOT a reproduction of Randall McCoy's home. The is a replica of Preacher Anderson Hatfield's home where the "hog trial" took place and where the election day fight took place, where Ellison Hatfield was stabbed and shot by the 3 McCoy boys. I live within 4 miles of the replica and drive by there all the time.

Von253 is correct, that is a reproduction of Preacher Anderson C. Hatfield's home.
