Sisters Gone South

IMG_2918
Beautimous sisters, Ramey and Joanne

This past weekend, sisters Ramey and Joanne and handsome nephew Jed traveled down to Fairhope, Alabama for the spring awards meeting of the Alabama State Poetry Society. I didn't go for several reasons: 1) I wasn't asked, 2) I didn't feel like going (massive fibro flare), and 3) I'm not a poet (and I know it) and not a member of the society.

As it turned out, I sort of wish I had been there. My sisters were fine representatives of our family and I would have loved seeing them accept their awards.

Joanne won a first prize, a second prize, two third prizes and two honorable mentions. Ramey won a first prize and an honorable mention. If she had entered more poems, she would have won more, states Joanne emphatically. And I believe it.

IMG_2928
This amazes me. My baby sister Ramey looks as young as my handsome nephew Jed, Joanne's son. She's not. She's a couple years older.

This is so ironic. As I was writing this post, I received a call from Andy with more sad news. Another sister has also gone south in a very different way. My sister-in-law, Andy's aunt, Susan Wright, passed away this morning. Susan was suffering from lung cancer but was doing well with her treatments. Apparently she had a heart attack at about 4:00 this morning. Before the paramedics could reach her she was gone. And so am I--back to bed. Toodles.

Does your sister, Ramey, have some sort of thing with her legs? They both appear to be growing in the same direction. Maybe it's "two left feet!"

Oh dear! Happiness and sadness in one day, in one post.

Happiness first, as seems right ...
Congratulations to Ramey and Joanne on their poetry prize winnings!! Love the photos and must say that Ramey and Jed look like me and my family with the height differences. I'm the short one in the family.

Huge hugs as you, Andy, and all as you deal with Susan's unexpected departure. May she rest in peace.

Hugs to you, although more gentle as the fibro monster is bothering you. I wish you could say "Be gone! You have no power here!!" (from the movie Labyrinth) and be forever rid of the fibro monster.

Grace and peace, my sweet friend.

I Take This Quilt

WedFab1

A long-time good friend has asked me to make a quilted banner to be displayed at her granddaughter's wedding in August. The only guideline she gave me was the color scheme: black, silver, and pink. For some reason, I've had a difficult time figuring out just what kind of quilt I'm going to make. For a long time I was stuck on a plan to make a four-ring wedding ring quilt with machine embroidered centers, but I was having trouble getting that idea to mesh with the decidedly modern color scheme. I think I have a plan now--unless I change my mind.

My next problem was fabric. If you could see my sewing room, you'd wonder how I could ever have a problem with having enough fabric. The pinks I have in abundance, but precious little black, and no silver or even grey. So I went looking on the internet and found just what I needed at Fat Quarter Shop. As you'll see, some of it even has a built-in wedding/marriage theme (see photos above and below).

WedFab2
Language of Love

WedFab4
Black is beautiful--and so is silver, grey, and white.

WedFab5
Even better combined with some of my pinks

WedFab6
And here is the design that I'm going to make (I think). I'll use four of the circles, and in the center of the quilt will be the names of the bride and groom and the date. What do you think?

Now let's link up with Beverly's Pink Saturday blog party and see what's happening over there.

Great fabrics, great pattern, and even greater ideas!! Well started, Susan!!!!!!!! What a wonderful treasure for this couple to have as they start life together! Perhaps a pocket on the back of the quilt would allow a wedding photo to be tucked in?

Is there a Happily Ever After fabric or a Now and Forever fabric somewhere out there? If so, it can become an anniversary banner for decades to come!

Hugs!

Letting the fabrics convey the theme is a good way to involve the viewer. I'm sure this will be a wonderful piece.
Since there is writing on the fabrics, maybe family members could sign the quilt or add messages to go along with the printed text.

Good morning Susan, The fabric you shared is perfect for the colors. How big will the quilted banner be? What a lovely idea. The touch of pink is going to set off the colors perfectly. What ever you decide to do will be a treasure.

How did your journal project go? I am mailing mine today. It was fun.

Happy sunny days to you and yours.

UFO Progress Report: Week 17

Thank goodness for Patti J., one of our blogless UFO busters. Patti sent me a good UFO Progress Report this week. Now I've made progress myself, continuing the big-stitch quilting on my "Mama in the Mirror" challenge quilt. But I've shown that quilt nineteen ways from sundown here, and I'm really out of ideas for photographing it until it's at least finished.

So here is Patti's progress:

PJ2
I love Patti's quilting on this baby quilt. Wish my machine quilting was that pretty. I also love her fabric collection, Lily and Will (by Moda, I believe). The two main characters in Ramey's book are Willie T. and Lily Claire. So this collection reminds me of them. This is a UFO that Patti is finishing up to welcome a new baby.

PJ1
Speaking of Welcome, Patti also got her wool Welcome wallhanging pin basted for quilting. This is so pretty, Patti. I can just see it hanging on the front door of The Yellow House. Teehee. Patti also took a couple of UFO quilts to the quilter. Congratulations, Patti, and a great week, UFO-wise
***

ArmHave you ever tried to photograph the back of your right arm, with nobody around to give aid? Well I did, and here's what I got. I discovered this huge bruise this morning. The thing is, it's already fading. I have no idea how or when I came by it. I'm notorious in my family for being clumsy. I hardly pay attention to my thumps and bumps anymore.

Gotta run. Skipper and I have an appointment with Dr. Rachel in just a bit. Skipper also has a boo boo on one of his appendages. His left hind leg has a sore place, which I've been doctoring and Skipper has been licking incessantly, but it just won't get well. So we're going to let Dr. R. work her magic. Skipper won't let me photograph it though.

Look below for Mr. Linky and link up to show us what you've been up to this week.

Applause, applause, Patty! Well done on the baby quilt (great quilting!) and on your wool Welcome piece, too!!

Susan, you must be like me in the bruising dept. I can nearly break a bone and have the littlest bruise to show for it, but let it be a bump I ignore as a non-issue and it looks like your poor arm - as if I've been beaten. Go figure!

Hope Dr. Rachel can work wonders on Skipper's boo-boo or at least protect it from his worrying with it.

I'm about to finish up my two quilted gifts so I can get back to my UFOs. The hiccup is that I'm getting into beaded embellishments and I hope I don't go past the limit of pretty and hit gaudy with the beads!

Hugs!

Good job Patti! Sorry to see your bruise. I do that too. My doctor is forever asking me where I got it. Skipper will just have to put the "cone of Shame" on. Roscoe had to have his on too as he had blown his knee. I have pulled out a quilt that I better be done with this weekend or I'm really going to be in trouble ---from Roscoe hahahaha Have a great weekend Susan and the rest of you too.

Hi Susan ~ I finally have a finished quilt! I couldn't post it for last Friday's linky because the recipient just received it Sunday evening when her family came for dinner, and I didn't want to spoil the surprise ahead of time. I actually took a break from UFOs to start and finish this quilt. Hopefully, now it's time to get back to quilts that have been hanging around waaaay to long!

Great job to Patti on her progress. Love the wonkiness and the quilting!

If possible, try liquid band-aid for dogs. It takes very bitter so they won't lick and it puts a cover over the area so it will heal. Jake had a tendency to lick his paw raw until he got involved with a few sessions of liquid band-aid. Now, he's reformed!

Let Us Drink Wine Together on Our Knees

Dunkard and PathThanks so much to everyone for your support and comments on the Walmart withdrawal. I was surprised that so many people agree. I was afraid I might hurt some feelings with me rant, but apparently a lot of people are fed up the that retail giant.

At right is my sister Ramey and her Drunkard's Path quilt. Please note that while she is drinking wine, she is not on her knees. I know she would want me to point that out.

She needed some new photos of her quilt for her new publisher, and so she came over last night for me to do the honors. The new group, Vanilla Heart Publishing, is already doing a great job in promoting Ramey's book Sweet Music on Moonlight Ridge.  Click on the link there and watch the new video. It's wonderful.

Ramey and our other sister Joanne made the Drunkard's Path  quilt, and I put the borders on it. The publishers will use the photo of it in some of their promotion material, or maybe in the newly printed book--I forget which. Or maybe both.

After the photography was done, we had a glass of wine in celebration of something--whether the quilt or the book or just life, I'm not sure. I had half a glass (not even), and my ears and face turned red and I felt like I was broiling, as usual. But it was worth the symptoms. Good wine.

Since "Justified" is off tv for the season, we had to resort to a couple of episodes of "Ancient Aliens" to keep us entertained for this Tuesday evening. My niece India came by but only stayed for a few minutes. Her critique of our choice of tv show was, "I don't hold with that philosophy."

India's grandmother, my mama, would have disagreed strongly. Mary Ramey believed adamantly that aliens have and still are visiting our planet--and settling down to raise children. "Where do you think all these people came from?" was her argument. She believed that it was biologically impossible for the number of people on earth when she was a child to turn into the billions that now call themselves earthlings. Maybe, Mary. May-be.

Got to get back to working on quilts, art journals, quilt plans, and the like. It's going to be a very busy spring/summer season here at the Yellow House. I've let my gander get too full. (It's a family joke.)

Oh my, if that isn't a wonderful quilt! I clicked on the link to Ramey's video and I love it! Is that what it looks like where you live? I miss mountains so much. It is very flat here, not as bad as Kansas though. I wish Ramey's book was in our library. Maybe I can ask them to get it. I'll try.
Hope you have a good afternoon.

Love the quilt you three sisters had a part in making and it's wonderful it will be used to promote Ramey's book! How cool is that??!

As I emailed you, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if "they" from outer space were among us. Do you remember the episode of Twilight Zone or One Step Beyond where the aliens were the only ones who had symmetrical faces?? Ya gotta wonder ...!

To quote Ellie Arroway in "Contact", "I'll tell you one thing about the universe, though. The universe is a pretty big place. It's bigger than anything anyone has ever dreamed of before. So if it's just us... seems like an awful waste of space. Right?"

Hugs!

On 04/26/2012, Ramey said ...

Glad to say that when you took the picture, I had not yet reached the "on our knees" stage! But I was pretty much there by the time the evening reached its conclusion! Thanks for the great picture! Even if I am making a funny face. Looks liek the wine was sour!

And, Joanne, that was the non-sulfite wine we were drinking! I think Susan has some kind of unfortunate anti-alcohol condition.

Love the blog post title! The quilt is gorgeous. The drunkard's path is one of my favorite blocks. Its name turns people off from making it which is unfortunate.

Is There Life After Walmart?

No_walmartThis is Day One of the rest of my life without Walmart. I'm taking the cure. I've had it. The company is distinctly unethical, unAmerican, and uncaring, and unshopper-friendly.

There are so many reasons why I'm fed up to here with Walmart, I just don't know where to start--or even if I want to start.

I remember Sam Walton's Buy American campaign. What happened to that? Do me a favor; try to find something in Walmart that was made in America these days. Check Walmart labels, and you won't have to wonder where the jobs are; THEY'RE IN CHINA!

And try to get down those maddeningly narrow aisles. A mouse in a maze has more room to maneuver than Walmart shoppers. And there must be something about being in that store that causes a person to turn into a donkey's orifice. I stood in an aisle yesterday for a full five minutes while some woman studied the doggie treats. Or maybe she was in a trance, I'm not sure. She didn't move, blink, or breathe the whole time; and her buggy coupled with her ample frame took up the whole aisle, and then some. People will plow right into you and keep going without so much as a pardon my stupidity. And I have waited at the end of an aisle, trying to merge into oncoming shoppers for longer sometimes than I wait at the traffic light at the intersection of 280 and 119.

And do you know anyone who works at WalMart? Do you realize how they treat their employees? Like paid slaves. Not to mention how the animals and plants from which their groceries come are treated.

And now the bribery charges. That, along with my latest sojourn into the swamp that is WalMart yesterday, brought on a resolve in me that I haven't had since I made up my mind to quit smoking. I'm not going back, not ever. At least, that's my plan.

I know there was a time when I got along just fine without every-other-daily trips to Wally World. But just like when I decided to stop smoking and couldn't imagine life without a cigarette hanging from my mouth, it's difficult now to see how I'm going to carry on without the goods and services offered by that definitely un-august establishment.

But I'm making a plan. We have two small grocery stores in Leeds that are very nice. And there are two Publix, each about 15-minute drive away. There are pharmacies and dollar stores and farmer's markets. And there's always the thrift store. I think I can do it. Wish me luck.

Meanwhile, for your viewing pleasure, below are a few scenes you might encounter while shopping at Walmart.

I'd be ROTFL if those photos weren't so tragic. Where to these folks keep their self-esteem???? I know there's an equally tragic website where The People of Walmart photos can be seen by the thousands. Shudder!

The tiny aisles, rude customers, increasingly junky merchandise, and immense parking lots keep me away from Wally World at all times and the issues stemming from management are a horror. Poor Sam Walton must be spinning in his grave.

We're doing just fine without Walmart and you'll be just fine without the hassles, too, Remember the Little Engine that Could: I think I can, I think I can!

Like you, I have sworn off Wallyworld! I HAD it with them 3 YEARS ago & have never set a foot in a WalMart since. Luckily, Target is VERY near our house. I can buy what I need (including groceries which are fresh & reasonably priced) plus everything else I need. And SHOULD some item need returning, I do NOT have to be grilled by a former executioner for Saddam, AND have my cheek branded with a big 'R' which stands for RETURNER.' I can't STAND WalMart. As for the ... ummm ... attire for lack of a better word, I have to say I've not felt so great about myself lately, but those photos make me feel CONSIDERABLY better. At LEAST all my body parts that SHOULD be covered, ARE! Good grief. How sad that they obviously feel they look appropriate to be in public. Finally, I almost fell O.V.E.R. to learn that you are a former smoker. I would NEVER have tagged you for a smoker. I used to be a stripper. BWAHAHAHAHAHA .... not!!!!! Just thought I'd stir stuff up! LOVE YOU!

I knew WalMart was evil many years ago, when I didn't even live in this country! I live where there is a large Amish/Mennonite population. They have stores that they own (which are wonderful!). One day, when I went to one of these self-owned stores, and the doors were closed, they had a sign saying they could no longer stay in business because everyone was using the new WalMart! I cried over that little store and knew WalMart was evil! I use the local grocers, Aldi's and sometimes Target. I buy fabric at JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby. I get my yarn at Michael's or my LYS (local yarn shop). There are ways. Our country has been fooling ourselves for too long about WalMart. Guess I ranted just about as much as you!

Great post. I haven't shopped at a walmart since 1993 because of how the company treats its employees (a majority of them women) and because of how they destroyed small businesses. I shop locally when I can and Target when I can't. I spend the extra money to shop only at Whole Foods & farmers markets. It's a small thing but important to me that I choose to live as wisely as possible.

Good for you. Shop locally, and tell the owners you've made that decision. Everybody needs to make a living, and I like being fair to my neighbors.

I have learned to avoid lots of "big box" stores over time, because I've found I get overwhelmed by the STUFF in those stores and can't make a decision. I'm so glad to support the little guy, and Target, etc. will never miss my small spending.

My gosh this post got me out of my "lurking mode". I am proud (lol) to say that I have only been to Walmart a couple of times and am living my life just fine without them. I tend to shop in my small town even if it is more expensive - I get my exercise (I walk or cycle to the shops) and show my support for the local merchants. I only wish that more people followed my example as the big box centers seem to be taking over which hurts the smaller shops which in turn gives us all less choice.
I may be elitist but I sure wouldn't want to shop in a place where the people you pictures go - although it might cut down on my appetite which wouldn't be a bad thing.

Those must come from the website "People of Walmart". I think some people deliberately just dress as weird and obscene as they can get away with, hoping they'll wind up having their picture on that site. Why? Some of them almost seem to violate some public indecency laws.

I won't shop in Walmart - too crowded, too noisy, as well as for some of the other reasons offered already.

On 04/25/2012, Nancy said ...

Wow Susan, I understand completely what your saying and I am also not a big (no pun intended, LOL) fan of their establishment. However, hubby and I live within a 3 mile radius of 5 grocery stores, including the Walmart. We shop the ads for the things we need for the month, making the loop. We are big comparison shoppers because we are both retired and living on an income cut by 2/3 what we made when both working. We manage just fine...however, Walmart is our last stop in the loop and that is for paper goods only. To be very candid, I buy a ton of incontinence pads every month...what can I say, Scleroderma has taken a toll on my insides. I have priced them everywhere, even online and I just can't afford to pay the price it would cost me to go to a Target or other store. So, much as I regret it, I do go to Walmart once a month and until others bring their prices for the paper and personal items I need, I will have to continue to do so. I do think it is very sad that at this point in time, you can't throw a small pebble without hitting a Walmart! There are three within walking distance for us if we so chose. Talk about Monopoly...but, when you are pinching pennies, you do what you have to. Especially when our prescription meds, between us take a full 3rd of our monthly income. It is a sad day when you have to shop in a place you despise, but it is the nature of the beast for us. As for the photos, I can't help but thank the sweet Lord that the woman in the fourth photo down, had her back turned. Thanks for the opportunity to add to your venting, though I know I go against what your standing for, I do agree with you. Thanks also for the comic relief in the photos. Oh, and the picture of the couple applying for a job...I was thinking more along the lines of a plumber or a repairman perhaps! Don't these people know that "We say NO to crack???" Hugs...

I hate WalMart with a purple flaming passion. I'd rather get beat up than go to Walmart. The only semi-worthwhile thing they ever had was a small fabric/sewing/patterns dept. and they stupidly took that out about 4 yrs ago. Since then they have nothing that I want or need that I can't get elsewhere with less aggravation. And what rocket scientist thought it would be a good idea to have check-outs where you buy food products and clothing items. Nothing like putting clothing items up on the belt that the customer ahead of you just laid their nasty drippy chicken parts package. Great idea Walmart!

Weekend Treasures

Goodies

On Saturday, on the way to the grocery store, I stopped off at a local yard sale. I found a few things I might use in upcoming Circle Journals--the little Language of Flowers book and the repro vintage Christmas postcards in the photo. I never really know until I sit down to work what will turn up in journal pages, but these are possiblities, and surely inspiration.

Yesterday afternoon, Ramey and I made a late run to the thrift store. We didn't have long to shop, but I did find that cute little birdie wall hook. Got to find a place for him.

I'm drawing a blank when it comes to clever blog patter; so rather than sit here trying to come up with something, I'm going to get busy on one or two of the many, many projects on my plate. Happy Monday, everyone.

What sweet treasures! I love the little Language of Flowers book! What endearing eye candy is surely on those pages. Do you have a place to display the book as it is?

The pictures are the kind I put in frames around my house at Christmastime, just in front of the same-sized pictures that are in those frames during the rest of the year.

Love the bird hook!

Enjoy working on your various projects today. My plan is to put binding on one wall hanging and make two labels. After those tasks are finished, binding clips, and a bit of a fiddle in the sewing room are next!

Hugs!

You found some good treasures. I've got to get busy on the circle journal I have now - it is Shelia's. I've got to come up with a clever idea since I am not clever with my hands. I hope you are having as much fun with this project as I am.♥

UFO Progress Report: Week 16

BigStitch

Here's a peek at my big-stitch quilting on the "Mama in the Mirror" quilt. My blister is almost well, so I'm going to try to get back to it today. Just couldn't stand the pressure while the blister was new.

Blog reader Wanda D. gave me a bit of valuable information re. big-stitch quilting. If I ever do it again, and I might, Wanda says BIllie Lauder recommends using #8 perle cotton, not number 5. The #8 goes through the fabric easier. I was going by a video that I found online, which recommended #5, I don't know why. So that's what I'm using. But I think Wanda and Billie have it right. No. 8 it is, next time. Thanks, Wanda.

Steve came yesterday and doctored my roses for their disease. I hope they spring back to full health now. He also weed-eated (weed-ate?), anyway he and his helper cut the weeds down in my little wooded area, so now the doggies don't have to take machetes when they go back there.

We thought we had lost Blue Toy in those weeds, couldn't find him anywhere, and Skipper was distraught. That's the only toy he plays with, adopted it immediately when he came to live with us, won't let anydoggie else play with it. But we found it yesterday in a basket in the living room under my iPad box. Phew!

Skip&Soph
"Just so you know, Skipper, that toy is really mine," says Sophie. "Paul gave it to me a long time ago when you were just a gleam in your daddy's eye. And I didn't name it Blue Toy. It doesn't have a name."

Blue Toy
"MINE!"

Below is Mr. Linky. Link up, bloggers, and let us see what you've been doing this week.

Hi!

What nice stitches in your Mama quilt! It's good to hear your blister isn't bothering you now and also about thread size. I may have to order size 8 perle cotton on-line as the quilt shops here don't seem to carry it.

Thanks Wanda! I'll check out what Billie Lauder has to say. I have two of her Quick Quilt Tricks books and refer to them often.

Skipper looks so cute with his (?) Blue Toy and it seems Sophie is okay with him having it even tho it was hers to start with.

My sewing machine's feed dogs just stopped working and didn't start again after I cleaned all of the fuzz out of that part of the machine. I've also done the trouble shooting things and I think the poorly made plastic lever has worn out. Bother!

Hugs!

That picture of them in the chair is hilarious! Maisy loves her basketball above all other toys. It goes missing from time to time and she makes do with her hamburger or green ball. But then it resurfaces and takes its rightful place as favorite. It's missing right now.

On 04/20/2012, Jan said ...

Sorry to say, Sophie, but it apparently does have a name...and it's Blue Toy. I think it's safe to say that your little brother has claimed it as his own! I believe the term to use to describe Steve's work is 'weed-eatered!' Yep, I'm positive that's the past tense!!

The Chair

Chair2Today, I went back to the La-Z-Boy store to return the fabric swatch and confirm my order of the chair. While I was there I took a picture so I can show you what the whole chair looks like. It won't arrive here at the Yellow House for two or three weeks.

While I was in Irondale, I made a quick trip through the Lovelady thrift store. And look what I found (photos below). About 7-8 yards of 100% cotton RJR quilter's fabric, just perfect for backing a quilt. At today's prices, that's well in excess of $70 worth of good fabric. Guess what I paid for it? $3.98. There were a few more bolts available, but this is the only one that I liked and thought I could put to good use. I have to to-be-made project that I think I can back with this.

Fabric2

Fabric1

Gotta go. Don't forget UFO Progress Report tomorrow.

Love the RJR fabric you found at such an incredible price. Methinks you should have taken photos of the other bolts as blog readers in your neck of the woods might have wanted what you left behind. Come to think of it, here may be a stampede of local folks going to see it without the pictures. I know I would be headed there in a heartbeat if I wasn't in Virginia!

Am finishing up quiltie gifts so no UFO progress for me this week. My shoulders are getting more tight and tense as I machine quilt this little wall hanging. Ouch!

In Which She Talks About a Chair, Two Altered Cats, Spiked Coffee, and Gastrointestinal Misery

Had a busy day yesterday. First a visit with Doris, my tax accountant (a confusing meeting in which we decided to file an extension, which I don't like). Looks like I'm being credited with lots of income that I haven't actually received. My tax bill this year might well top my income. Life is a challenge, isn't it?

After Doris, I went chair shopping to replace the English country chair that I got rid of because the dogs kept it all mashed down all the time and it looked horrible. So I gave it to Andy. It looks great in her living room and her kitties aren't heavy enough to mash it down.

Swatch2I've been looking for another chair for months, and the only ones I have found that I liked were very highly priced. I recently received a sale notice from Lazy Boy so decided to check it out yesterday, since I had some time to kill before picking up the Andy's kitties at the vet (more about that later).

Lordy be! Talk about chair overload! When I walked into the showroom, my vision was accosted with myriad chairs in various styles and colors, mostly ugly. Of course, I was immediately accosted by a sales rep as well. I asked her if I could have a few minutes to take in the sights, so she went away. I went through the huge showroom once, twice, and was on my third circuit when I saw it, a chair that I actually liked.

At about that same moment, the sales lady appeared again. I learned that the chair was on sale in a price I could actually afford. After checking her records we learned that the chair was not in stock but one was expected in in early May.

I took one more last circuit of the showroom but didn't see anything that I even sort of liked. So I told the sales lady I thought I wanted the chair. I told her my only worry was whether or not the red in the chair fabric would clash with the red in my gingham couch. She suggested I check out a fabric swatch and take it home to see. I did, and it doesn't (see photo--the sage green even matches my little Queen Anne chair that Daniel made the slipcover for), so in early May I should be the proud owner of a new chair. It's a recliner, and I normally don't like recliners. But the reclining feature is well camouflaged in this chair. I didn't even realize it reclines until the lady told me. It's really a beautiful chair. Can't wait to show you.

After chair shopping, it was on to the Alabama Neuter and Spray Clinic ("It's Hip to Snip") to pick up Andy's kitties from having had their "procedures." Mr. Boots seemed no worse for the wear when I got him home, but Miss Ruby seemed a little nonplussed. She went immediately under the sofa. Boots went immediately to the back door and wanted to go out. Sorry, Boots. You guys have to stay inside for a week.

Back home, Ramey called asking me what we were going to do for our Tuesday night get-together now that "Justified" has come to an end. We decided that she would bring a movie and we'd have cake and ice cream and watch it. Little Sister arrived with the movie and also with a small bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream, which I love in coffee. I brewed up a pot and poured me a cup--half coffee, half Bailey's. Ramey had hers with milk and maple syrup. Sounds yukky to me, but to each her own.

I know what alcohol does to me. No, it doesn't make me take my clothes off. It makes first my ears and then my face turn tomato red and burn. I've even had to give up my favorite wine, white zinfandel. So I don't know why I drank that stuff, except that it's sooooo goooooooood! Does alcohol do that to any of you?

So with burning ears and face, I sat and watched one of the most boring movies I've ever seen, "The Ides of March." Even the presence of the ever-gorgeous George Clooney didn't help matters. That movie is a dud, I tell you. If you haven't seen it, don't bother--unless you are really into the boring, unethical, and sometimes downright dirty aspects of politics--'cause that's all it is. The description on the DVD package called it a nerve-wracking thriller. But, just as in real politics, they lied.

The past few weeks have worked on my innards, folks. One of the first and most noticeable effects of stress on my body is always tummy troubles. Yesterday, I thought I was all better, but today the bothersome symptoms are back. I probably sent my digestive system into shock with that cup of Bailey's and coffee, especially after it was still recovering from all the death and mayhem of the past couple of weeks.

But today is laundry day. I've put it off as long as I can unless I want to go and buy new undergarments, sheets, and towels. So I'm going now to sort laundry, start the washer, wrap my blistered finger in a bandage, put on my soft thimble, and get back to quilting my "Mama in the Mirror" quilt.

I have digestive problems too and have to watch what I eat and drink. and Acid reflux is no fun...

Oh, love the new chair's upholstery fabric!!! I look forward to seeing the actual chair that will be coming to join your lovely living room. What a great potential it has to become your "sleep chair". AMIL has a glider rocker that is her sleep chair and DH's is a comfy worn leather chair. Sit and fall asleep, guaranteed.

Oh, sympathy to Mr. Boots and Ms Ruby! That's gotta hurt but I know they're glad to be home again and Andy is glad not to have to endure the loud and crazy behavior that would soon be happening were they not fixed.

Bummer and bother about the GI miseries, but after all you've had to deal with, it's probably par for the course. Unwelcome, but not worrisome.

My face also turns red when I've had a bit of alcohol but I thought that was because I have lupus, Hot weather, spicy food, or other vasodilator will also turn my face bright red. I just ignore it and have my beverage anyway. Yes, Bailey's is always a delight!

I'm going to boldly (or not) try to machine quilt the pink pansy wallhanging today but it's nearly 3p and it's not yet ironed to the fusible batting ... yikes!

Hope you feel better soon and that the upsets are over.

Hugs!

As for Lazy boy...We always buy our recliners from them. I've ordered from the same saleslady for years now. The pink chair on my blog was a Lazyboy I had recovered. We have never had any mechanical issues with the chairs...
When looking for a new recliner, I pretend I'm doing hand work in the chairs so I know that it will support my head.
Anyhoo, can't wait to see that fab all over your chair!
Take care,

The red reaction might be a sulfite sensitivity. If drinking liquor, only drink top shelf stuff, stay away from wine unless it is imported from Italy or is labeled as sulfite free (domestics are required to have the nasty chemical as a preservative, and the Italians won't ever use them). I have a horrible reaction to wines and liquors with sulfites in them, that is time that I was prescribed sulfa drugs for an infection.

Knocked Out Roses

Thumbnail

I had all my holly bushes pulled up and red knockout roses planted around the front of my house last year. Remember? I love roses, but I've never had the nerve to try to grow them because of the gardening talent and care they require. Although my mama and her mama were masters at growing things, I didn't inherit their talent. Either one of them could break off a twig from a bush or plant, go home and stick it in a glass of water, and have a rooted plant in no time. But me? I can kill plastic plants.

So when I heard about knockout roses and how they were resistent to all bugs and diseases, needed precious little care, and that anybody couuld grow them, even me of the dark brown thumb, I made arrangements to have them planted in place of those hateful hollies that needed constant trimming.

Well! My roses have a disease. Some kind of mold or fungus. They're blooming fine, but all their leaves are aquiring little tan patches, which turn into little holes, which turn into big holes, which quickly destroy the leaves.

Steve is supposed to be coming some time this week to treat them. Even he didn't know these roses could get diseases. He had to call a knockout rose expert to get the scoop. Apparently, according to this expert, they are losing their inbred resistance. Could be, but it seems every other knockout rose bush that I see anywhere around here is lush and gorgeous and disease free--like those in the photo above. I think plants just don't like me.

IFingner
n addition to my brown thumb, I have a chewed up fingernail and a blister on my thimble finger. Big-stitch quilting is much harder on the fingers than regular quilting. The #5 perl cotton and the big-eyed neede are harder to pull through two layers of fabric and one of batting. It's the same thimble I've used for ages, but just looky. I have one of those soft leather ones that I started using after the blister formed. I don't like it. But maybe I'll get used to it.

I have to meet with the tax accountant at 1:00. She has had my records for over a month, so I called a while ago to see if my return was going to be ready today, this being tax day. She requested that I come in, said she might have to file an extension. Now when your tax accountant won't talk to you over the phone and wants you to "come in," that's almost as scary as your doctor asking you to come into his office to discuss your tests.

This has been an awful month so far. I want an April do-over. This was not what I had in mind.

Your roses have a problem??? Bummer and bother! Do you suppose the pH of your soil is to blame since the hollies were there for so many years?? Just a wild guess from someone who is in no way an expert.

Ouch! Your finger does look sore. Are you using a #7 crewel/embroidery needle for your perle cotton? A wonderful book I got from the library last month, titled "Quilt and Embellish in One Step!" (by Linda Potter; C&T Publishing,2004) suggests that type needle. I liked her ideas so much I bought this book and just bought #5 perle cotton and needles yesterday but haven't used them yet.

We've been planting strawberries, mulching, and generally exhausting ourselves this morning.

I second the idea of going on a vacation!

Hugs!

Our Diane

159314905538124717_CWoMzGop_fJust as I was about to go out the door yesterday to attend Billie's service, the phone rang. It was Diane's husband Joey (Big Joey, she called him) calling to tell me that Diane had passed away.

Diane was Sophie's groomer. She came in her dog-grooming van once every few weeks to give Sophie a hair cut, bath, nail trimming, etc.

She came, that is, until about nine months ago. That's when Diane called me to tell me she had lung cancer and would be taking some time off. She fully expected to recover and be back taking care of her "babies."

Diane was one of the sweetest, dearest people I've ever known. She loved the doggies and did indeed think of them as children. I know Big Joey is going to miss her horribly. He was crying by the time we finished talking yesterday. So was I, of course.

I've looked all morning for a photo of Diane to post. I know I have some of her with Sophie, but I can't find them. So I'm posting this pretty vase of roses for her instead. Her service is Monday morning.

UFO Progress Report: Week 15

I have the picture blocks finished for my "Mama in the Looking Glass" (or "Mama in the Mirror") quilt. And I'm almost finished basting the quilt. After quilting, I'll attach the photo blocks in the four dark red squares--maybe with buttons, maybe with bows. I haven't decided for sure.

Mama Blocks
M

Mama Quilt
Basting almost complete

Yesterday I baked. I made two hummingbird bundt cakes and a pan of brownies. One cake was for Jesse's dad and stepmom, and the other was for neighbors Paul and Karen. Karen just recently had major surgery and a cancer scare. But, thank God, no cancer and she's doing well in her recovery. The brownies were for Andy and Jesse. When there's not much one can do, one can always bake.

Today at 12:00, we tell Billie goodbye. It will be a graveside service. My allergies are so bad today, and I got no sleep last night. I would rather just stay inside and think of Billie laughing, shopping, playing bingo.

There has been a development, completely beyond my control (as most developments are) that has me more upset than I've been in a long time. It's not something I can talk about, but prayers for disaster aversion would be appreciated.

I think Skipper has the answer to all problems. When life gives you dirt, DIG! And share the fun with a friend.

Well done on getting the wonderful quilt tribute to your mother to the basting stage! Applause, applause. I vote for attaching the pictures with buttons, perhaps even using buttons from your mother's button box.

My Plate Runneth Over

Nacy'sJournalSo much needs doing that I don't know where to start. This is Nancy's "Wise Words" journal from my circle journal group. I haven't even started my spread in it, due at the end of the month, although I do have it in my head.

I also have to finish my guild challenge  "Mama in the Mirror" quilt before the June guild meeting, June 11, I think--quilting and all. I'm thinking of hand quilting it in the big-stitch technique. done with perl cotton. I haven't seen that lately, but ten years ago or so it was pretty popular. It's fast and easy and has a very old-fashioned look.

So those are the first two things on my list. But I also have a wall hanging/banner project that I've promised for a friend's wedding that will be in August. I haven't started that yet either, although I do have a plan--a four-ring Double Wedding Ring with machine embroidered motifs (doves, flowers, bells, etc.) in the ring centers.

And I can hardly get my mind to settle down on any work at all. Our dear Billie (Jesse's other grandmother; Andy's former MIL) is sinking fast. Her family brought her home yesterday. Andy and Jesse and the rest of her family have been at her bedside constantly. Andy and Jesse are so sad. I wish I could comfort them, but I know there's little one can do for someone watching a loved one suffer. I just pray for God's mercy.

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers Susan. Big Hugs...

OH Susan, I've been meaning to tell you. I also read Starvation Heights. A disturbing story to be sure, but worth the read, if you can swim through the poorly written twists and turns, some of them very confusing until you read on. I was SO tempted to just flip to the back to see how it all turned out, (something I never do) but I had to finish reading all of it to see how many more victims there were and how it all turned out.

Billie, Andy and Jesse are in my prayers.

Grandmother Billie and all who love her are in my prayers. It is so hard to say good-bye to those we love. May she go in peace when the time comes. Big hugs!

Your various plans sound wonderful and I look forward to seeing each creation in turn.

There is a wonderful book titled "Quilt and Embellish in One Step!" by Linda Potter that I had to buy after looking through the copy from the library. Hope your library has it so you can look at it before you start your large stitch quilting as it may give you more ideas. BTW, AQS has it at a low price if you or someone you know is an AQS member.

More hugs, my friend,

Stash to Treasure

Our guild yard sale was awesome. The room was full of vendors and shoppers. I was both. Actually, I was very good and didn't buy much at all--one book, four homemade doggie treats, and a scone.

I almost sold out. My table was overflowing at first, but I had only about half a dozen items to bring back home. I made enough money to pay the cleaning lady today, the lawn mowing boys later, and purchase the goodies for tonight's sister supper (more about that later*).

YS4
Lots and lots and lots of fabric

YS3
Plenty of do-dads

YS7
Flannels and books

YS5
I think I might have bought this vintage crocheted spread that Gwen was selling; but before I could finish procrastinating, someone else had bought it.

YS2
I can personally attest to the scrumptiousness of the homemade scones

In Other Guild Business

YS8
April Blocks of the Month

YS10
Gift from our Japanese friends

YS11
Yo-yo detail

YS12
Cheryl C. hand quilted this vintage Grandmother's Flower Garden for a friend.

YS13
Ann N. organized the making of the blocks for this quilt in honor of a friend's wedding. She also put the blocks together and hand quilted it.

YS14
Gwen C.'s jelly-roll race quilt

YS15
I donated this lap-size quilt, which I made a few years ago, to our project for a local nursing home.

YS16
Nancy M. and Craig H., teamed up to make these two cuddle quilts.

YS18
I know that this too is a collaboration, but I can't remember whose. My apologies.

*The sister crew is coming tonight for supper. We're having chicken salad, potato salad, apple pie, and vanilla ice cream. Later, Ramey and I will watch the season finale of "Justified." I don't know what we're going to do with ourselves on Tuesday nights without Raylan Givens and the folks of Harlan County. I'm not sure Raylan is going to leave any of them alive to have a next season. The title of tonight's episode is "Slaughterhouse."

Have fun tonight.

Ah! That crocheted bedspread is divine! Wish you had nabbed it! Then I would try to talk you out of it. Can't wait to see what Raylan is up to tonight. Also, looking forward to the yummies.

Oh! What a wonderful guild sale and I'd have had trouble resisting those glorious goodies! I'm sorry you didn't get the crocheted bedspread. Sigh!

The quilts are all beautiful and it's a treat to see them. Thanks for all of the eye candy!

Have fun tonight! You might make Tuesdays your Dinner and a Movie night but that would take longer than a TV episode. If there is a favorite TV show you have seasons of on DVD, that's a possibility, too. We're watching Numb3rs and have that whole set of DVDs.

Hugs!

Wonderful stuff! I MUST make a quilt like your April block of the month, hope nobody objects to my copying. Looking forward to the sister supper.

Glad you sold so much! The quilts are as usual to die for gorgeous but I really love the wedding quilt so much. It reminds me of How to Make an American Quilt which I just had to watch for one of my classes. So neat to see it done "for real". That jelly roll quilt is wonderful too, it makes me think of Thing 3 those are her favorite colors and she loves flags.
Thanks for sharing all the lovelies and I hope dinner is spectacular.

Ahhh...you included my Grandmother's Flower Garden!! I've had that quilt so long, I've gotten quite attached to it, and I'm going to hate to see it go. :(

Holy Pink Saturday

PinkSat

I came across this quote from President Obama from a magazine article printed before he became president. It caught my attention because it so correctly and succinctly presents my own creed of faith.

"I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian. I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful."
--Barack Obama, Christianity Today, January, 2008

Happy Easter, everyone. May God and his precious son Jesus bless you richly, as they have done me.
