Pink Saturday on Ginny Power

Pink Slippers

The electricity still has not been restored in my neighborhood. But we aren't the only ones. There are still thousands across the state in the dark.

At least I have Ginny. But having now spent over $100 on gasoline for her and listening to her constant rumble, I'm ready to give her a rest. I'm not complaining, understand. So many people lost everything, including loved ones. I know just how lucky the rest of us are.

I learned yesterday that a friend and former classmate of mine died when the assisted living facility where she lived at Shoal Creek was destroyed. In fact, everyone in the home was killed, including a child.

A fellow quilt guild member lost her entire home. She and her husband were not home at the time, and they're all right.

I had to stop watching the news. The devastating destruction and heart-breaking stories were more than I could take anymore. God bless all of the victims. The only bright spot is the huge response from people who have come out to help.

Jesse, Andy, and Ramey all came by last evening (at different times). Jesse filled Ginny up with gas for me (those big gas containers are very difficult for me), Andy petted the dogs and left, and Ramey stayed a while and watched "Fringe" with me.

I finished putting the tornado quilt top together. Now all that's left are borders, and it'll be ready for quilting. I also stitched another hexie flower. I think I have 47 total now.

I finished ready Major Pettigrew's Last Stand this morning (see review in left sidebar). I loved it much more than I expected to. I recommend the book to anyone who loves a heartwarming, wryly humorous, entertaining read. I think my next read is Cleopatra: A Life. Have any of you read it?

I go now to partake of a light breakfast, take a shower, and do some more hand sewing (hexie flowers). I've tried to not use any unnecessary electrical appliances, such as my sewing machine, until the power is restored. The dishwasher hasn't been run in days, and it's full of dirty dishes. It's a good thing I have a habit of rinsing my dishes thoroughly with hot water before putting them into the dishwasher. Else my kitchen would probably be smelly by now.

A human body is only created to hold just so much grief and you have reached your limit. The loss and destruction is so vast and widespread that it is almost impossible to grasp it. Seems like everything I go to do these days, I just bow my head and thank God for my blessings. Running water, electricity, a comfortable bed, a roof over our heads, things we tend to take for granted have taken on special meaning for so many of us lately and it humbles me. Our area was devastated by Hugo in 1989 and I remember well the weeks without the "necessities" and it causes me to stop and just say "Thank You, God". Have a blessed day Susan and know that there are many, many prayers being lifted up for all affected by the storms.

I'm so glad you have Ginny! Wonder if she can power a dishwashing cycle or if you'll need to hand wash the dishes and let them drip dry on the dishwasher racks? My mother used her dishwasher as a drying rack.

Sympathy to you as you endure the sad news and sights that surround you. Big hugs!

Would your quilt guild friend who lost her home like to have some fabric and/or a quilting book?

Your pink breakfast looks yummy.

More hugs!

Susan, we are all thinking of you and the suffering in Alabama. What a good suggestion Barbara Ann made for your quilt guild friend! I'm sure she could put together a new stash in short order if we all sent something! I also know that is probably at the bottom of her 'to-do' list right now, but keep it in mind. Glad you have your 'Ginny!' I lived in S Fla my whole life and a generator was a MUST during hurricane season! Wyoming? not so much! We only use one when we go camping! Please keep posting and let us know what we can do to help! The Southern US is in all of our thoughts right now.

We Survived

Alabama_tornado

It's pretty hard to be joyful this morning about having lived through yesterday unscathed. So many have been devastatingly scathed. Seeing the images of the destruction on tv this morning, I was horrified and sad.

All my family and friends in the area are fine with no injuries or major property damage. But there is amazing damage all around us.

The outbreak began in the predawn hours yesterday. The first tornado came within a couple of miles of us and went on up the road to do major damage in the little town of Moody, killing one person. But the worst was yet to come. Around midafternoon, the monsters started arriving, spinning out of Mississippi and into west Alabama with a vengeance. The daddy rabbit of them all was a twister over a mile wide that travelled more than 100 miles on the ground through Alabama, from state line to state line. That one came through downtown Birmingham headed northeastward, just barely missing Leeds where I live.

Many parts of one the hardest hit areas, Tuscaloosa, were leveled for blocks and blocks. Other hard-hit towns were Pleasant Grove and Hueytown.

The death count continues to rise. The last one I heard for Alabama was 170 people killed, with the count expected to rise. The governor has declared the state a disaster area, and President Obama will visit us tomorrow.

Please keep Alabama and everyone throughout the south hit by the tornadoes this week in your prayers.

It's just terrible. I just mailed off a scrap quilt that one of my groups made for Japanese tsunami relief. Now we need to get busy for the people of Alabama. It is good to hear you and your family are okay but I certainly wish that was true for everyone. This is so very sad and horrific as have calamities been too many places in the world.

DS2 who is in NE Georgia called today to let us know they were okay. The twister that was headed for them went south of their area instead.

So far, the worst of the storms have stayed west and north of us. It's windy here, but that's nothing to complain about.

Big hugs!

Hope you have a good weekend.

Glad to know you are alright. The first thing I did this morning was call my mom to check on them. She said their neighborhood had a few trees down, but that was it. I'm SO relieved to know Leeds was NOT hit, tho' horrified & saddened by the devastation all over Alabama. Hi Susan,
I've been so worried about you and all my Alabama friends. I wrote a post yesterday describing what it was like when my family's home was hit by a tornado in 1967 when we lived in Anniston and were inside our home at the time. Also, my family's cemetery is located in the Hueytown area, though not too many of my relatives are living now, or at least the ones I know. It is a most poor and rural area.
Thank you so much for your post letting us know you and your family survived unhurt. Yes, we are praying for all those affected.
Lisa

So relieved and glad you're okay. I was wondering, I thought you lived relatively close to B'ham. (our internet has been down, so I couldn't check on you). We've had stong winds and some rain but nothing like Alabama. A tornado brings such devistation and "Mother Nature" can't be stopped. After 4 years there are still some buildings in Americus that have the blue tarps on them. It's hard to recover after a tragedy like a tornado.
It seems strange how blogging "friendships" have evolved. Again, take care and so glad you and your family okay.

I Made It!

I got most of my cooking done on Saturday afternoon, was able to go to church on Easter morning, and got back in time to finish up the Easter dinner before my people arrived.

It wasn't easy, but I'm so glad that I was able to follow through and enjoy a great afternoon with my family. Not everyone was there, and I missed the ones who couldn't make it. But everyone in attendance, including Skipper and Sophie, had a great time and ate too much. Today I rest.

Ramey Quilt

NOW, just look at this beautiful quilt top that my sister Ramey found at the local Flea Mall over the weekend. My other sister Joanne and I drooled over it and had to fight feelings of jealousy that Ramey found it and not us.

Ramey Quilt1

I also want to share with you this quilt in progress that my sister Joanne is working on. My niece Jenny, who passed away several years ago, made the blocks. Jenny was probably the best needleworker in the family, as these blocks attest. You might have seen the photo already on Joanne's blog as her UFO progress report last week. I just wanted to make sure everyone sees it.
IMG_2494

The pattern for this block came from an old Oxmoor House book, Progressive Farmer's Award Winning Quilts, 1974. If you ever see a copy of this book at a thrift store or yard sale, I suggest you buy it. It has some wonderful block patterns, all submitted by Progressive Farmer readers.

Horse quilt pattern017

PF quilt book018

Deborah emailed me to tell me that she has all my binding made (enough for six quilts) and is putting it in the mail. Guess I know what I'll be doing for a while. Binding UFO quilts.

After I took The Jungle Quilt to Lena last week, I found this quilting design, called "Animal Crackers," online:

Ue-AnimalCrackers_medium

I had chosen a leaf design, but this one is so much more fitting for the quilt. I talked to Lena and she's going to call the company and order it today.

I hope all of you had as fine an Easter Sunday as I did. Now I'm going to get started on resting up from all the cooking, eating, visiting, talking, and laughing.  And I already know which UFO I'm going to start on next. Tell you tomorrow.

Happy Easter; Happy Passover

Passover-sader-plate-fd-lg
Jewish Seder Meal

Thank you, God, for holy days that remind us just how much you love us and of all the blessings you bestow on us. Let us always remember that no matter by what name we call ourselves--whether Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Atheist, or simply Child of God--we all belong to you. You put us here to love each other because in loving each other, we love you. Help us to do that on this most holy of holiday weekends.

Easter-eggs-300x300

I don't know how I'm going to get through this weekend. I'm hosting my family tomorrow for our Easter dinner, and I'm sitting here wondering if I can get everything done.

I had a brief respite from the fibro symptoms yesterday morning. So I drove over to Centerpoint to my friend Lena's to pick up "Flutterbugs" and drop off "The Jungle Quilt." I also stopped by Walmart for some grocery shopping. By the time I got home and unloaded the groceries, I felt as if a whole convoy of freight trucks had run over me, not just one. I had hopes of waking up this morning with energy and ability to clean and cook. Didn't happen. At least not yet.

I do pretty good as long as I'm sitting. But when I get up and try to walk, I sort of sway and jerk around and bump into everything. This is not good. This is not good at all.

But Happy Easter and Passover, everyone. May God shower you with his most wonderful blessings.

Linking to Beverly's Pink Saturday, where everyone is celebrating the weekend in all kinds of colors.

May the God of love and peace cause us to live out love and peace each day. He is Risen indeed!

Dog Day Afternoon

Dog Day Afternoon

It rained and rained and rained all day yesterday. So the dogs, the fibromonster, and I stayed inside most of the day. I did finally get up and do some sewing room work, which gave me a good report for tomorrow's UFO Progress Report, but didn't help the pain and fatigue.

Then, during a break in the rain late in the afternoon, I took the dogs for a walk. This proved disastrous. Skipper houdinied out of his halter and escaped through Jennifer and John's (next-door neighbors) cat door into their garage. I finally caught him when he came out to chase Brad's big labrador, got him back in his halter, started down the street with the two of them, and the tornado siren down on Hwy. 119 went off.

"We have to go back to the house," I told the doggies. Sophie was disappointed by obeyed as the good dog she is. Skipper, as the rapscallion he is, refused--flat out refused. He weighs only 9 pounds, but do you know that it is virtually impossible to move that little beast when he doesn't want to be moved. So I had to carry him most of the way back home, watching the sky for any sign of a funnel cloud.

By the time I reached my front porch steps, I had maybe 1/1000th of a joule of energy left in my whole body. So I put Skipper down, meaning for him to follow me up the stairs if I could make it. I had already unleashed Sophie, and she was standing at the front door waiting for us.

"Nope," said Skip. "I think I'll just sit here at the bottom of the steps and stare at John's cat door over there in hopes you'll unleash me and let me run back in there." The dog was immovable yet again.

So I picked his little mmmmmm up and struggled up the steps with him, expecting the tornado to dip down and get us before we could get into the house. Inside, I fell on the couch and turned on the tv to find out about the tornado. No tornado, no weather warnings at all, just rain and thunder.

And then I remembered: Wednesday is the day they test the tornado siren during tornado season.

Hexies The only other thing that I accomplished yesterday was to make a few more hexie flowers while I watched the movie "Stepfather" on the Reelz Channel during the early evening. (I now have 45 hexie flowers constructed.) Before that, Andy came by, exhausted from work, and petted the dogs, then went home. After the movie, I went to bed and started reading Major Pettigrew's Last Stand. I'm hearing all kinds of good things about it, and I have to say that although I didn't read much last night before getting sleepy, I was hooked from the very first chapter. It's my book club's May selection.

1000 Pyramids Tutorial

20110413_3

Our friend Debra over at Debra's Design Studio blog has a great gift for anyone looking to make a "!000 Pyramids" quilt, which I've been wanting to make for a long time. This is a very old pattern, which was made by our foremothers as a charm quilt, using cardboard templates and sewing by hand. But Deborah has updated the technique to make her beautiful quilt (shown above).

You can find Part 1 of Debra's tutorial HERE. Subsequent blog posts give continuing parts of the tutorial. Debra has also generously offered to quilt your quilts on the barter system. No cash, just stuff. You would need to talk to Debra for more info on the types of things she'll barter for. But I can tell you that she's not picky.

So that's all for now. The weather forecast promises another stormy afternoon, so I think that means more hexie flowers will get sewn. No dog walking will be attempted today. I've already told them it's the back yard or nothing.

Too cute! My two take their best naps on their backs a la' Sophie & Skipper! Dogs have a way of making themselves 'heavy' when they don't want to be moved...what's that all about??? So glad it turned out to be a drill and not the real deal!! The weather in your area has been pretty scary lately!

Rosey's Needlework

Il_fullxfull.203030782

Il_570xN.203030679 How could I forget Rosey Grier. Thanks to Carol T. for the reminder. I think he was the first man I ever knew of who did needlework. And that was back in the day, when men's and women's roles were a lot more delineated than they are today. And yet this big, manly football player did his needlepoint and his knitting and didn't care who knew. He even published a book of needlepoint designs for men.

I will always remember Rosey for his heroic actions the night Bobby Kennedy was murdered. Rosey was working for Bobby's campaign as a volunteer body guard for the Kennedys. When the shots rang out, Rosey jumped on Sirhan Sirhan and wrestled the gun from his hand.

I found lots of photos of Rosey with his needlepoint and lots of references to his knitting. But the only photo I could find of him knitting is shown below, and it's not a very good one. I don't know who the man is to his right.

I notice that there's a quilt on the sofa behind them. I wonder if Rosey made that.

***

It's stormy here this morning. I don't think the storms are severe though. I haven't had the tv on so I'm not sure, but they don't feel severe. Just good springtime thunderstorms, watering my newly planted red knockout roses.

I chose red roses because I thought they would go well with my yellow house and red front door. The landscaper, Steve, left two areas where he is going to insert white mini Acoma crepe myrtles when we can find them. If anybody know a possible source of these plants in or near Jefferson County, Alabama, please let me know.

The fibromonster says he can't leave yet because it's raining. Like Sophie, he hates to get wet. So I guess I'll have to put up with the old idiot for a while longer. He's such a rude house guest--sleeps in my bed and everything. Stands behind me yelling in my ear and making it very difficult for me to concentrate on anything. And it feels like he keeps whacking me with sticks, poking me with needles, and lighting my body on fire. He's just not a very nice monster.

Happy Hump Day, everyone. I hope you don't have any monsters at your house.

I was going to remind you the other day about Rosey Grier but it was late in the day and between my Sclero and still having issues from surgery, I just didn't have the energy to do anything but enjoy reading your post. Thanks for including him today. I also remember him for his actions the day Bobby K. was killed. As for other men who do needlwork, in the 70's I worked on the orthopedic floor of a local hospital and a pediatric surgeon, very young with a lovey family (2 small children) was in our care for 6 weeks for back injury. During his stay, he made 3 full sized crocheted afghans. Beautiful...he told his wife what colors he wanted and she brought him what he needed. He said his mother insisted he learn when he was young and would get bored easily during summers out of school and our long Utah winters. During his medical education he crocheted to relax and just continued on after he became a successful doctor for stress relief. His wife told me she cold always tell when he'd had a particularly rough day (usually with a pediatric cancer patient) because no matter what time he got home, he would pick up his yarn and crochet hook for at least and hour to unwind. I love things like that. I think if my hubby would take up quilting during the winter when he gets so fidgety he would feel better. Even with a good supply of books, you need something to do. Hugs...

Famous Needlers

13840233_qJmruz8R_c I accidentally came across this photo on the internet. Paul Newman was definitely one of my favorite hunks. His acting was ok too, and I also love his wife Joanne Woodward. When I saw this photo I got to wondering how many famous people really do sew or knit or crochet.

Vanna_book I know that Vanna White crochets because I edited some books with her when I was at Oxmoor House. I have also made a couple of her afghans.

Having, of course, nothing to do but sit here at this computer and while away the hours (sure!), I went looking for needling celebrities.

Here's what I found out.

Venus Williams, the world’s number-one tennis player, learned to sew so she could have new clothes for her dolls. Later, in between winning tennis tournaments, she joined forces with Steve & Berry to create a clothing line called EleVen.

DSCN0505 Nicole Kidman learned to sew because she couldn’t find anything that she liked in the stores for her children. Now, she sews her children’s clothing.

I also understand that Chris Martin from the band ColdPlay likes to sew.

Famous people who like to knit are: Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz Hillary Swank, and Daryl Hannah. Word has it that these ladies meet on Sunday afternoon to sit and knit and enjoy each other's company.

Thanks to all of you who gave me tips, advice, and suggestions about helping my Skipper out with his allergies. Be assured that I'm going to look into every one of them.

Now I also have the added worry of snakes and my dogs in the backyard. When we took our walk yesterday, there was a very big snake squashed in the road. And we've seen copperheads in our yard in years past. I'm considering shutting off the gate to the large part of he backyard and confining Sophie and Skipper to the original tiny fenced area until snake season is over.

From the commotion I hear outside, the landscapers have arrived to remove the holly stumps and plant the knock-out roses around the front of the house. So I guess I better to get out of my PJs and into some clothes so I can go out and speak to them.

That dreaded old Fibromonster has come for a visit. I've had a couple of very bad days, and today is looking like more of the same.

I hope all my blogging buddies out there are doing well.

Disclaimer: My layout and fonts looks hideous, I know. Fibromonster always interferes with my thinking process and destroys my eye-hand coordination.

It's the Dog's Pajamas!

Fp-pjs-red I know, I know. Dressed up dogs can be a little ridiculous when taken to extremes. And de-doganizing too, I guess. Both my dogs have sweaters to wear outside when it's horribly cold, but that's it.

However, I read this morning about a dog owner who made pajamas and booties for her allergy-suffering doggie to wear outside. Got me thinking. Poor Skipper scratches and scratches and rolls and wiggles till I feel so sorry for him. The vet put him on Benadryl and Temaril but he still scratches. And I have five different kinds of medicated shampoo that I've tried on him to no avail.

So I'm thinking of trying the PJs to see if it helps. I'm looking for a pattern to make him a few pairs of light-weight PJs for this summer, then if it helps, I'll make him some warm ones for the winter.

PJ Paw Print Fleece Lie3 400 x 300 And I know all the dogs in the neighborhood will laugh at him and tease him terribly--as well as those pesky squirrels that live in our trees outback.

Have any of you had experience with dogs with allergies? Do you have any suggestions for help? Or patterns for dog pajamas?

One of my dogs licks her paws when there is grass outside. If she starts to lick, then I take a damp rag and wipe her paws down. This seems to help. When she sniffles and sneezes alot, I give her a Benedryl. The vet told me how much to give her. It works.

On 04/18/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

Hi -

Poor Skipper! It's interesting to consider if doggie clothes would help. We had a dog long, long ago who had problems with itching in the summer. We also gave her a doggie dose of Benadryl but the vet gave us a power to put on the irritated skin and the combination seemed to help.

Hugs!

My daughter's bulldog seems to be allergic to all things outdoors, and has terrible skin problems as a result. The poor guy is on so many meds and still suffered til she decided to wipe him with baby wipes every time he comes in from outside. It seems to be helping, so you might try that.

I'm sure you've already thought of this but our little dog scratched and scratched and made herself raw until we gave her dogfood with no artificial flavors or colors. She stopped scratching right away. About five years later she started scratching herself again. I checked the ingredients on her bag of dogfood and sure enough, the manufacturer had changed the ingredients to include artificial flavors and colors.

I have cats. Azreal has food allergies. At first I thought it was something in my house, maybe the carpet cleaner or laundry detergent. The vet had me put him on some hypo-allergenic cat food and it went away immediatley. Luckily, where I live now, there is a Animal Nutrition Center and I can buy all kinds of premium, hard-to-find pet food.

I have a dog with what we think of as severe allergies. We finally gave up on the pills and ointments and had allergy testing done on him and he now takes two allergy shots per month. This has greatly improved his quality of life. I do keep him indoors because of his allergy problems, he is only out for potty trips. His allergies are to a wide variety of trees and grasses as well as weeds. I wish you luck, I do know this is very frustrating.

Mother Nature's Heart

Heart-shaped rose Y'all know I love hearts. There's just something about the shape of a heart that makes me smile. I have lots of hearts around the Yellow House. I love to collect hearts in all forms: fabric, yarn, ceramic, metal, etc.

One of my fun heart collections has to do with ordinary things that by some accident take on the form of a heart--like the rose in the photo. Some of you might remember the pile of heart-shaped grass clippings or the bird nest that I photographed last year.

I also have a little heart-shaped rock with sparkles in it that Jesse or Phillip (can't recall which) found and gave to me years ago.

Below are some photos that I found on the internet of natural hearts.
