A Few Things Halloweenie

Treat Bag So a while ago, the doorbell rings and Sophie is on her feet barking like mad, which she does every time the doorbell rings. We hear a voice from the front porch say, "Calm down, Sophie. It's just me." Now when Shane the mailman rings the doorbell, it's a sure sign somebody has a package that won't fit in the mailbox. This package was for me.

I opened up the box and pulled out this bag (photo at right). Inside the bad was a bookoodle of treats for me! Candy, stickers, rubber stamps, leaves, flowers, a pumpkin card, a handmade black-cat pin (photo at bottom), reminiscent of my black-cat jack-o-lantern that went up in flames. And very best of all, this wonderful witch (photo below), flying on her broom all the way from Dawn T.'s house to mine to wish me Happy Halloween. The entire goodie box was from Dawn, who took part in the Trick or Treat Swap. Thanks so much, Dawn. Your creations are wonderful! I hung the witch in my kitchen window, where I think she'll stay as Kitchen Witch for The Yellow House.

Treat Witch
And while we're on the subject of treats for me, I want to show you this cute little witch's hat pin that Sharon Z. sent me. I wore it all the time at the quilting retreat last week. Now I think I'll let Dawn's witch wear it for a while. Don't you think it would look cute on her sweater. BTW, what's her name, Dawn? Do I get to name her myownself? Anybody have any suggestions?

Treat Hat

We have great plans this All Hallow's Eve. We have a big basket of treats by the front door for the Trick-or-Treaters. Actually, I've had to refill it once, since Linda (who helps me clean house) and I about emptied it one time. You see, it was full of Three Muskateer Bars, both mine and Linda's favorite. (Let a word to the wise be sufficient: don't ever fill your trick-or-treat basket a week before Halloween.)

Then this evening, after the T-O-Ters go home, we (me, Vann, and Sophie) are going over to Paul and Karen's across the street for a cookout. Paul is making his wonderful chili, grilling burgers and dogs ("WHAT????" --Sophie), Millie and Eddie are bringing the condoments, and I'm making a Pumpkin Pound Cake with Caramel Sauce. (Yeah, the prednisone seems to be working on my back and I feel like baking.)

What Halloween Means to Me
Anne, who's hosting the Amazing Autumn Coffee/Yarn Swap, poses a question each week and asks swappers to answer it on their blogs. This weeks's question wants to know what we think of when we think of Halloween--how we feel about the holiday (love it, hate it, whatever). Well, I feel like I'm being redundant when I say it is now and always has been my favorite holiday, my favorite time of year. I believe all of you already have figured that out probably.

Since I was a child, I've loved everything spooky: spooky stories, spooky movies; spooky holidays and parties. I love haunted houses--the real ones, not so much the fake ones that pop up and charge admission during October. They always have too much gooey stuff going on.

Speaking of haunted houses, I have a tale to tell. When my mom passed away in 2005, the family gathered at the funeral home to make arrangements. My pastor at the time, Tim, was there also. Now our local funeral director as well as Tim are notorious for their wit. When it came time to choose the guest book, thank-you notes, etc., Dennis (the director) was showing us the choices. One choice was a peaceful lighthouse scene featuring a print by Thomas Kincade. Dennis couldn't help himself; he had to launch into a story.

It seems he was helping an inebriated gentlemen make arrangements for his wife's funeral when it came time to choose the guest book, etc. The tipsy gent pointed to the Thomas Kincade collection and said, "I'll take that. The old lady loved haunted house." Dennis tried in vain to explain that it was actually a lighthouse, not a haunted house, but the fellow wouldn't have it. He was sure the old lady would want him to choose the haunted house design, so he did. We were all laughing through our grief by the time Dennis was finished with his story.

In closing, please go to yesterday's post below and consider helping us out with Plan B, even if you weren't a member of the Trick or Treat Swap. It'll be fun! and your efforts will be rewarded.

Cat Pin

But wait! There's more!!
I forgot to show you the pics of the TorT package that Joanne received from Dawn. So here they are. The first photo shows the wonderful banner that Joanne received hung on her mantle.

I think a 'Haunted House' would be appropriate for my own funeral, when I finally kick the bucket. I'd rather have people laughing...frankly, you can keep wakes and all the mumbling and sadness.
BTW, I guess I can send you a photo of what I sent Dawn...unless it's here already and I missed it?
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Have You Been Booed Yet?

Pumpkin BooedAt least one person in the swap still has not received her swap package, and at least one of you has not received an acknowledgment that the package you sent has been received. Anybody else that I haven't heard from missing their goodies?

Remember that I said in the beginning that nobody would be flaked in this swap. Everyone will receive goodies. I'm trying to contact the person who has apparently not yet mailed. If by the end of the day, I have not heard from her, we go to Plan B, which is a secret, so never mind. Just rest in the knowledge that I do believe this swapper will deem the reward worth the wait.

In the meantime, here are a few shots from around The Yellow House. We're ready for The Great Pumpkin. Bring him on!

Oh, BTW, I had my appointment with the orthopedic surgeon yesterday regarding my screaming back. She prescribed a prednisone pack and stretching exercises, and I'll go back in a few days for an MRI. I'm feeling a little better today. Thanks for all your good wishes.

Oh yeah! I 'bout forgot. Polly booed me--and now I'm booing YOU! If you'd like to play, copy the Happy Halloween button (first on my right sidebar) and post it on your blog with a link to mine. Make sure to put the button in a visible spot like your sidebar so potential booers will know you've already been booed.

One More Time

IMG_0272 Here are the goodies that my sister Joanne sent to Cindy B. The package contained:

  • A fun table runner
  • Jack-o-lantern votive
  • Package of pumpkin candles
  • Cat card and envelope
  • Black crocheted doily.
  • Trick-or-treat bucket.

We haven't heard from Cindy yet as to whether or not she has received her goodies. Hey Cindy! What's happening, girl?

Goodies O' Plenty

Halloween Swap Pic Jen's Frankenstein I'm going to attempt to show photos of the rest of the Halloween swap goodies for which I've received photos but haven't shown here. If I've left yours out, please let me know.

First are the monstrous goodies that Jennifer sent Tangee.

**************************************************************************************************
IMG_1555c This great group of goodies is from Rosalyn to Sharon.

Stuffed pumpkinBIG TIME EDIT AND APOLOGY:

This package is, in fact from Barbara to Kat. I apologize for getting my information disordered. Anyway, that stuffed pumpkin is still cute as it can be. I love it.

The next two photos show what Kat sent to Clare--a spooky place setting and some great Halloween napkins to finish off Clare's Autumn table.

I haven't entered the links, but I'm all out of time. I had so much trouble with a couple of the photos that I've spent all my computer time and then some and I have to get on with other things. So I'll enter links later.

Joanne, I could not get your photo to copy onto my computer. I kept getting a message that the file is corrupt. Would you please send again? Thanks.

If I've missed anybody, please let me know asap.

In other news, Trudy and Lisa both guessed the correct use for the thing in yesterday's post. It is indeed a bag in which to microwave potatoes. Congrats to you two. And since I came up with two identical prizes, I'll send you each one. I have Lisa's address. And I have had Trudy's at one time but have misplaced it. So Trudy, please send me your mailing address to suscleve@aol.com.

Aw - thank you! We've had at least 3 customers come into the quilt shop in the last few weeks asking about those potato bags. Although one said hers caught fire in the microwave! Eek!

Sorry to hear about your friends...such a sad loss. Don't worry about the tag, do it when you have time. Or if you don't, don't worry about that either! I've been sick with the flu, so I haven't even been able to blog...so, I understand.

I posted about my goodies on my blog. I'm in Ohio now but you can either link over there or I'll send the picture when I get back. Then you can answer the big mystery question...WHO sent it? Unless she commented in the last few days and I missed it...I better check again.
Everyone sent such cute things, but I think I'd vote the Frankie-themed package from Jennifer as my favorite!
PS--I read about those potato bags recently. I hear you don't even had to prick the potato, but I don't get how that's possible.

So Much to Show; So Much to Tell

Swap Banner 2
Once you get behind blogging, there's no catching up. I have photos and stories from retreat; I have swap photos to show; I have new photos of Sophie; and I just general have a lot of gabbing to do. I won't get it all done today, but I'm going to take a stab at it.

Above is the banner I made and sent to my Trick or Treat Swap partner Sandy. Below is a pic of the rest of the stuff I sent.
Swap Goodies I have all of the photos that you've sent me. If I haven't posted yours yet, please be patient with me. I'll get to them all before Halloween.

Next is a photo of an ATC I made for Patti's Halloween ATC swap.

Patti_ATCAnd finally, here are some photos I took at the Piecemaker's/Patchwork Pals (PPP) Annual Quilting Retreat.

Retreat Cyndi
The first photo is Cyndi modeling a sweet apron made by Mary S. The next seven (7) photos are: Gerry's (she's behind the quilt) quilt top made from blocks she won in the guild block-of-the-month drawing, Pat L.'s (left) quilt top (Jane is helping her show it), another quilt top by Pat L., Cyndi's Stack and Whack blocks, two examples of the Easy Striped Table Runner that many of the ladies were making, and Rita's grandbaby quilt. (Scroll down for explanation of last photo.)

Retreat Rita Retreat Myrna Bag

Now whoever is the first to guess what the last photo is gets a prize. No kidding, if you tell me what this is, I'll send you a prize (don't know what yet, but it'll be good.) Myrna made it and, bless her heart, she took a lot of ribbing about it during retreat. (Myrna, you can't guess, and neither can any of the people who were at retreat.) Good luck everyone. Hi Susan,
well I will be your first guesser- I get to lead everyone down the garden trail in the wrong direction. At first I thought it was a bag for potatoes but I looked a little closer and didn't see any draw string. Now I am thinking that it is a Hot pad named "Hot Rocks". That's my guess and I will look forward to finding out how far I led others astray:D)

You had some lovely quilts to show from the retreat. I hope that you had lots of fun and came back rejuvenated and inspired.

I am about to begin a book you recommended a while back - The story of Edgar Sawtelle. I am looking forward to reading it.
Have a nice Sunday...

And ALL the Halloween things are wonderful! Doggone it, Susan! Thanks to YOUR banners being so nice, I'm going to HAVE to try one. You DOOOOO realize I sew by hand? LOL! Finally, tell your friend Cindy she is an absolutely darling model and her apron is terrific! Generally, aprons are designed either strictly for service or strictly for pretty. (Think 'French maid.') This one is quite perfect for service AND a very flattering style for any shape or size - even ROUND LIKE ME! Love it!

I'm Home!

And glad to be here. I had a great time at Retreat. I didn't overdo it, didn't sit for hours at a time the sewing machine, didn't stay up late sewing. I tried to pace myself. But even so, I'm having muscles spasms in my back today. But, you now what? It was worth it. It was nice to be with my friends with time to sew.

We got heartbreaking news while there. Two of our dear guild members were killed in a traffic accident this past weekend. Dr. T., our very first male guild member, and his daughter Cathy. Dr. T., a retired pediatrician, was 82 and Cathy was in her mid-50s. We will miss them so much.

If you have posted a comment here and didn't ask me a specific question, I probably won't reply. I have a ton of e-mails to get through--not to mention laundry and various other household chores (and there's the back thing). So just let me thank you all here for being wonderful blog readers and friends.

Here are pics of the Halloween Swap package that Pirate Toni received from Rabbit Toni. I have more pics and will post more tomorrow. If you haven't yet sent me a pic of your swap, please do. If you haven't received your goodies yet, don't panic. I've heard from a couple of swappers who were either late getting their goodies in the mail or confused about swap details. And if you haven't mailed yet and haven't let me know why you're late, please contact me at suscleve@aol.com. Thanks. Now, here are the pics.

More Treats

A Little Bit of Whimsy

Jar 3 They call them Whimsy Jars, and they're very popular with Swap-Bot swappers. So of course, I had to get in on the fun. And it was fun. Decorating this jar and filling it will Halloween treats was lots of fun. But I am glad it's done and in the mail to my swap partner. All my Swap-Bot swaps are done now, and there'll be no more for a while. I'm doing really good at cleaning out the dust bunnies in my life. When I'm finished, I think I'll work on the dust bunnies in my office and sewing room. But right now, I have to go work on that cookbook. It has to be out by Monday to make it in time for Christmas copies. I'm also scheduled to leave for my bee's quilting retreat on Monday. You see, still plenty of dust bunnies--but I'm working on them.

Boo to You Too!

Sara to ToniThese are the goodies that Toni received from her swap partner Sara. Isn't that Boo banner fun? and the Alexander Henry fabric in the table runner makes my mouth water. Toni loves bunnies, and Sara found the perfect Halloween card for her, complete with bunny rabbit. Completing the package is a very cute candy dish and roll of harlequin ribbon. Great job, Sara. I know Toni is tickled pink (or maybe orange and black).

Swap Deadline Tomorrow

Halloween Swap Image Just a reminder that tomorrow is the deadline for getting your Halloween Trick or Treat swap package in the mail. I hope everyone will be able to make it. I'm putting the finishing touches on mine before going to the post office today.

Please let me know today if possible if you're going to miss the deadline and when you'll be able to mail your package. You can e-mail me privately at suscleve@aol.com. Also if you have received a package and have not yet let your partner know, please do. It's only good manners. We all worry that our treasures will be lost in their good old USPS travels.

Happy Swapping.

Time for a Smooth Change

FRAZZLED LADY I have spent most of this past weekend thinking about my own "captivity of activity," how I let it happen, how I can solve it. I think I've figured out some things.

Five years ago, when fibromyalgia began taking over my life, I took up residence on the sofa for most days and nights. This went on for quite a while. I justified my lack of activity by the fact that the pain and fatigue made it very uncomfortable to move. I gained weight, missed out on lots of fun stuff, and caused a permanent sag in the sofa. I also started to feel very old.

Truth to tell, I am no spring chicken, but I wasn't quite ready to be kicked out of the hen house either. So I got up off that sofa (very slowly) and went back to participating in life. But I overdid it--by a huge margin. In order to feel like I'm an active human being, not nearly ready for the nursing home, I filled my life with crafts, meetings, volunteer work, swaps, challenges, bake sales, and anything and everything that felt like something I could do and enjoy.

Trouble is, I'm not enjoying hardly any of it anymore. Because although I'm off the sofa a lot more now, doing stuff, all kinds of stuff, the pain and fatigue have only increased. When my body tells me it's time to rest and revive, I tell it, "I can't! I have too much to do." So the body says, "OK, take this!" And I reply, "OUCH!"

So starting today, (really! I've already started) I'm cutting back. I'm not going to renege on any of my commitments; I just won't do that. I'm going to finish everything I've started that involves somebody else. But things that I can let go, I'm letting go. Like this morning, I told myself that I had to be at my quilt guild meeting by 8:00 in order to sign up and get a spot at our February retreat. Then I started thinking about that retreat and how last year I was in constant pain and never got a chance to rest because the sleeping conditions are horrible there. So not only did I not sign up for that retreat, I didn't even go to guild meeting. I stayed in bed an extra hour. This will be the first time I've missed that annual retreat in 12 years I think. I thought I would be sad about it, but I only feel relief.

I did one other thing over the weekend to simplify my life. I saw this wonderful swap that I wanted to join, BUT I DIDN'T. I was so proud of myself. And I'm learning to ask for help when I need it. Instead of typing all the recipes myself for our church cookbook, I now have the help of three other ladies, who were not only willing but also happy to be able to help.

It's going to take a while to get my life to the point where I have time to take a day to just do nothing when my body starts screaming. But I'll get there. And I'm not going to give up and become an old woman who lies on the sofa till her husband has her committed to a nursing home. I'm going to continue to sew and quilt and blog and cook and read and go to meetings and retreats. I'm just going to do it all on my schedule. I'm going to stop imposing deadlines on myself that I know in advance will be difficult to meet.

In closing, here are a couple of projects (very small ones) that I worked on this weekend while I was thinking about simplification. The first is my block of the month (Dutchman's Puzzle) for guild meeting this morning. I'll take it next month (if I go) and give it to whoever won the drawing. The second is another triangle for the Halloween banner.

Good for you. It is so easy to be overwhelmed by all the things we allow ourselves to become a part of. As a missionary wife, mom of 5, homeschool mom, music director, Sunday School director, and so on.....I long ago found myself overstretched. I felt like Bilbo when he said he "felt like butter spread over too much toast". A wonderful friend in the ministry told me it was better to do one thing well than trying to do a dozen I would never accomplish. He also told me it was okay to say "no". Since then I have learned that being overcommitted does not bring joy...just exhaustion. I've also learned that when I do everything myself and am robbing others of the blessings God might have for them. It is not an easy task, though. Sometimes I forget and slip back into the wearer of many hats. But God is good and He reminds me to behave myself and give others the opportunity. Blessings from Costa Rica

BUT:I also learned the hard way to let a lot of things go, and reap the benefits, both mental and physical. We're the same age and push to "do it all"; I'm so happy you're going to let yourself slow down...your body and mind will let you feel MUCH better! And hey, you'll have more energy to blog your good advice to others who wish they could "scale back" a little bit!Onward,

Can I just say I am so excited for you, seriously reading this brought me the biggest smile. It's so hard to see limits sometimes, I know for me I kept trying to cut back the clutter in my home. It only made it harder to maintain no matter how much I got rid of it was still there. Then we moved to a place half the size of our old one, I had to simplify to the extreme, but it was easy. I am SO much happier now. It took that extreme for me to "get it" I'm so happy you are finding your balance as well. You are sure to feel relieved soon.

As a fellow fibromyalgia sufferer, I know where you're coming from, Susan. I finally had to say "enough" 2 years ago and gave up running and participating in a huge craft fair for our local high school. I took care of it for 20 years and guess what, when I "retired" they found other people to carry the load and it's still running. There comes a time when you have to put yourself first or else your quality of life becomes zilch. Good for you for taking control of your life back.

When I got serious about taking some "down time", it lasted over a year. In retrospect I feel so fortunate to have had that time to choose my activities rather than to have them imposed upon me by others. Then I got my mojo back and spent the entire summer cranking out quilt tops I can't afford to have quilted! That was a clear sign (as well as my depleted bank account) that maybe I needed to go back to work. The important thing is to pay attention to that inner voice and do what feels right for you!

Hi Susan!!! I hope by simplifying things the fibro calms down a bit... stresses always bring on the aches... I learned a few years ago that "No" wasn't a bad word... and that people wouldn't like me any less for using it... :o) I find that doing what I can (and WANT) to do has made life less painful, Much easier... and ultimately much happier (for everyone)

Feel better!

You already know I relate because I have Lupus & its common 'bonus' companion, Fibromyalgia. I have been so determined NOT to allow it to beat me, I've beaten myself. I believe, as I told you via an earlier email, that women especially tend to over-extend ourselves because we think we are 'supposed to.' I am going to follow your lead, my friend, and love myself enough to know my limits. THANK YOU!

I don't like busy but I can't spread these things out any other way. Maybe I need to take a few days to figure out a better way of dealing with all of it.

Vintage Spookiness Stirs Memory

Lisa to Ellen Swap

Here's a note I received from Ellen after she got her Halloween swap package (pictured above) from Lisa:
Just a note to let you know I received a great Halloween treat in the
mail today from Lisa Durst. She sent me a quilted table runner, some
Halloween tea towels, Godiva chocolates and a spooky shaped ice cube
tray. I have really enjoyed my first "swap" experience and am looking
forward to joining in another one. Thanks for putting it all together.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN! --Ellen Wery
Aren't these treats wonderful? I love the fabrics Lisa used in the table runner, and those tea towels are so cute. I really like vintage Halloween images. I'll bet Ellen is really going to enjoy those Godiva chocolates too.

Gotta tell a story from my childhood here. I don't remember how old I was, but I know I was under 5. Anyway, it's one of my earliest memories. I had a Halloween black-cat jack-o-lantern, a black cat that looked exactly like the one on the tea towel above. I absolutely loved it. Back then (when dinosaurs roamed the earth), jack-o-lanterns were made of paper mache, not good old plastic like we have today. Mama or Daddy or somebody had put a candle in my jack-o-lantern and lit it, and he looked so spooky and wonderful sitting on the window sill shining out into the dark Halloween night. Well, paper mache being flammable, my jack caught fire and blazed up. My daddy grabbed it and threw it into the fireplace where it disappeared in a conflagration while I wailed in grief for my beautiful black-cat jack-o-lantern.

Isn't it strange the things we remember. I wonder how many tragic house fires and childhood injuries were caused from paper-mache jack-o-lanterns. Anybody else remember them?

Anyway, be sure to let me know when you mail or receive a package; and if possible send me a photo of your goodies (hopefully no paper-mache jack-o-lanterns) that you're sending so I can post a picture here when your partner receives them.

That's a wonderful swap package! I love those cats too, but didn't know that they started out as paper mache. It is very odd what we remember, and that must have been so tragic for you when you were small. Now looking back you can see how lucky you were. I'll have to remind myself of this story next time my tween has a fit. Perspective changes SO much!

On 10/09/2008, Molly said ...

That is the most adorable table runner I've ever seen!!! How CUTE!

I can see why paper mache jack o'lanterns might have gone by the wayside. Guess they only "caught on" for a short while. Sheesh! However, I think the dinosaurs would have been scarier.*G*

What a marvelous swap package! LOVE THAT TABLE RUNNER! And I do indeed recall the paper mache items! AND the noise makers that one spun around by the handle. Remember THOSE? I never was allowed to Trick or Treat (long story) but I remember seeing all the goodies my schoolmates had. Your dad was a quick thinker to chunk that pumpkin in the fireplace! Good move, even tho' it left sad memories!

Wow!! What terrific goodies..do you think I could celebrate Halloween in Aus...would love to make all those goodies!! Not a paper mache lattern though, sounds like a bit of a health hazard!! Cathy

Now that I am involved in the children's products industry, I have been made aware of all the evils that lurk in these newer materials that have replaced things like paper mache. Lead, phthalates, formaldahyde..... I don't know whether we should long for the good old days when all we had to worry about was flammability or not!

Quilters Incognito

Bee 3 Yesterday, members of the Piecemakers Quilting Bee met at The Yellow House. Each member hosts the bee meeting once every year, and October (my favorite month) is usually my month to host.

We had a great time. I served a brunch of Blueberry Oven French Toast with Blueberry Sauce, Breakfast Casserole, Hawaiian Banana Bread, Fruit, Apple Cider, and Coffee. Vann joined us for brunch, and Sophie joined us for the whole meeting, lying on the sofa behind Barbara and commenting occasionally with a low-level growl.

There was lots of show-and-tell, but going through my photos this morning, I noticed that most everybody was trying to keep her face covered (or at least partially so) during the picture taking. Sally showed us two of her gorgeous leaf art quilts, but only half of her face. Sally even held up two of Doris's adorable snowmen quiltlets, managing to hide even more of her face. Martha modeled her wonderful Halloween quilt top, hiding herself completely behind it. Only Doris, displaying a quilt aptly titled "Joy" showed her face and her great big smile--but even then, I managed to cut the top of her head off.

Date Night and Devilled Eggs

1192131  Every now and then, Vann and I feel the need for a "date night." Just the two of us for a night out. Last night was date night. First we had dinner at one of our favorite BBQ restaurants. Then we took in the new move "Appaloosa" starring Ed Harris and Viggo Mortenson.

Although we both love movies (me especially), we don't often go to the theater. We wait for the DVD or Pay Per View. But we do usually manage to make it to the movies to see new Westerns. The last movie we went to the theatre for was "3:10 to Yuma." See?

"Appaloosa" was fun. If you're a "Lonesome Dove" or "Butch and Sundance" fan (we are), you'll like it--although I do not claim this movie to be as good as those two classics. It's still good entertainment. The plot: Two old lawmen/gunmen buddies team up to save a town from a bad guy, then one of them falls in love with a loose woman, Allie played by Renee Zellweger.

I have spent this Saturday morning in the kitchen, making deviled eggs (and you all know how I hate making those things). Seems like every time our church hosts any kind of function where there's eating involved, I get tapped to make deviled eggs. I think it's some kind of message from God, but I haven't quite got it translated yet. Anyway, the eggs are done and delivered. Now I'm about to start sprucing up my living room and putting out the fall/Halloween decorations. My quilting bee meets at my house on Monday, so I want everything to look nice for them. They will not, however, get deviled eggs for refreshments.

Ah come on...what better for halloween than "devil"ed eggs? I bet my hubby would enjoy that movie too, maybe its time we go on a date. We used to do that at least once a month, but have just gotten out of the habit.

I purchased a fall panel today and some coordinating FQ's to make a wall hanging to go over my fireplace. Found a beautiful set of pilgrims for the mantel - I am really in the mood to decorate too. Ah, but got chores to do first, sigh.

Hope all goes well with your quilting friends.

Brando made a movie called "Appaloosa" back in the '50s or '60s. I assume this wasn't a remake, as I don't remember Marlon's movie having much of a plot. Date sounds like fun. I haven't had a date since Watergate.

what is it about making deviled eggs that you don't like? for me its peeling the danged things..but we found out a trick for peeling them that is pretty cool...after you boil them, while they are still hot, cover the eggs with ice...put the pot top back on the pot and SHAKE like you are making popcorn...after a while the shells will be a million little pieces and will just slip right off..the occasional egg needs a little rinse to get some shell fragments off..but its sooo much easier than peeling one by one...
After that, the rest of the deviled egg making is a snap!

Deviled Eggs are hard for me because they seem to be something that should be made 'to taste' and I don't eat them. And don't they stink things up when you make them!

I told my husband he needs to see that movie.

Amazing Autumn Coffee/Yarn Swap

Coffee 1 I consider coffee one of the blessings of life. And next to fabric, yarn is my favorite crafting material. Lucky me! I found a swap that's right up my alley (maybe yours too).
In this swap, swap partners send each other coffee, yarn, and related goodies. I've signed up. Anne, the swap hostess, asks that each swapper post the swap questionnaire on her blog along with her answers. So here's my questionnaire.

Questionnaire

About Your Yarn Passion

A. I have been knitting and crocheting since the late 1960s.

2. Do you like using a particular type of needle or hook? (wood, metal, straight, circular) Is there something you've been wanting to try, or a particular size you always seem to be short on?
A. I prefer straight metal knitting needles and metal crochet hooks. I'm not fond of circular knitting needles.

3. What kind of projects do you enjoy making? Any types you just haven't ever gotten into as much as others?
A. I enjoy making afghans, hats, scarves, baby blankets, and dishcloths. I also like to make crocheted hearts, which I stuff and embellish for knob hangers. I want to learn to knit socks. I'm not interested in making any other garments.

4. What's on your needles\hook right now? What's your oldest UFO (unfinished object)?
A.I have a couple of afghans started (crochet). One is a ripple and the other is a single crocheted cat design crocheted from a chart. I have a jack-o-lantern dishcloth on my knitting needles. The cat afghan is my oldest UFO. I started it in the late 90s.

5. If you were going on vacation tomorrow, what project(s) would travel with you?
A. Maybe that cat afghan.

6. What are your favorite types of yarns? Any you're allergic to, or just hate working with? Anything in particular you've been dying to try?
A. I love Lion Brand yarns, especially Vanna's Choice Worsted Weight. But any medium weight yarns are fine. I don't like bulky yarns.

7. What sort of colors do you love in yarns? Brights? Pastels? More muted colors? Variegated? Are there any you can't stand?
A. I love all the Vanna's Choice colors. I also like bright colors and pastels. My very favorite color is pink. I also like yellow, blue, and green.

Your Coffee Passion

1. Do you prefer caffeinated or not?
A. Caffeinated in the morning, decaf after noon.

2. Whole bean or ground? For what type of pot or press?
A. Ground. I use a Gevalia drip coffee maker.

3. What types of roasts do you enjoy? Are you more the light and lively or dark and robust type?
A. I like dark roasts. Some of my favorites: Barnies Chocolate Cherry Cordial, Barnie's Amaretto, Folger's Black Silk. I also like French Roast coffee.

4. How do you 'take' your coffee? Creamers? Sweetener? Other add ins?
A. With International French vanilla liquid creamer, half and half, or Bailey's Irish Creme.

5. That first morning cup - is it about the taste, or the caffeine?
A. Taste.

6. Do you enjoy going out to coffee shops like Starbucks? What are some of your favorites?
A. I don't like Starbucks. I love Barnie's. I also like Joe Muggs at Books-a-Million.

7. You've just made the perfect cup of coffee - is it in a thick mug, or a thinner cup? Where would you sit to drink it?
A. I like a large thick mug. When I drink my coffee, I usually sit on the sofa with a book.

8. You're enjoying that perfect cup, and have a magic cabinet in your kitchen - when you open it, magically, your favorite treats will appear to enjoy alongside the coffee - what are they? Are they sweet? Crunchy? Soft and flaky?
A. Oatmeal/Raisin cookies, Pecan Sandies cookies, homemade biscotti, tea cakes, peanut butter cookies.

All about YOU!

1. Do you have other hobbies like spinning or scrapbooking?
A. Quilting, sewing, reading.

2. Do you collect anything?

3. What is your favorite part of Autumn?
A. The temperatures, the colors, and Halloween.

4. What sort of scents do you enjoy? Any difference in what you like for your house versus what you like for your body?
A. I don't wear or use scents on my body or in my home. I'm very sensitive to them.

5. Are you allergic to anything?
A. Perfumes, colognes, potpourri, some soaps and lotions.

6. Are you on Ravelry? What's your ID?
A. Yes. Username: SusanCleveland

7. How would you spend an ideal fall afternoon/day?

I saw the title of this post, and thought it said "Amazing Autumn Coffee/Yarn SOUP".

That would be an interesting recipe.

There is something about the way the process the coffee beans in Italy that removes the acid. Just smooth great coffee. If you are interested you can read more about it at www.illy.com
