The Gift of Age

Cartoon Old Age, I decided, is a gift. I am now, probably, for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body!  I sometime despair over my body--the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror. But I don't agonize over those things for long. I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly. As I've aged, I've become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend.
I don't chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I didn't need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to a treat, to be messy, to be extravagant.

I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon, before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4:00 a.m. and sleep until noon?
I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60s and 70s; and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will.
I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They, too, will get old.
I know I am sometimes forgetful.  But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And I  eventually remember the important things
Sure, over the years my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child
or pet suffers?  But broken hearts are what gives us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etch
ed into deep grooves on my face.  So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think.  I don't question myself anymore.  I've even earned the right to be wrong.
Being old has set me free.I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could  have been, or worrying about what will be.  And I shall eat dessert every single day if I feel like it.

Squiggle
I didn't write that. I received it this morning from a dear quilting friend. It was something I needed badly to hear. As I get older, I often feel that the changes taking place (bulges, droops, aches, pains, grey hairs) are things I should apologize for, things I should even try to hide.
I'm going to sincerely try to not feel that way anymore. Because, after all, I'm only going to get older if I stick around here. The droop and sags and bulges will become more pronounced. So if I think of old age as a gift instead of a defect, I'll have lots more fun in the process.
Feel free to borrow this and send it to your friends who are 50-something or 60-something or 70-something or 105. It's a lesson that needs to be learned by us all.

They always say age is just a number. I wish my body felt 24, LOL, but it's better than no number at all. My mom is 85 and is more energetic and full of life than most people half her age.
I like the idea of doing what you want and not apologizing for it. Good excuse for buying patterns and fabric even though I already have a stash. It makes me happy, LOL!

Thanks for the nice comment on the little outfit I made. I love to sew for children, even if I don't know what child is getting the garment.

Thank you for your well timed blog today because it is my 66th birthday and I have honestly tried to practice the suggestions from your friend. But I also struggle with fibro and strangly enough I have so many of the physical problems you have. Also quilt and got started six years ago when I walked into Lydia's in Huntsville. She took one look at me and said you need to do wild and crazy and stay away from that traditional. It has been a passion ever since because I really do not care about anything except pleasing myself. What a relief that was at 59! And what a fun journey it has been. My biggest problem is enough time and dealing with fibro. I honestly believe sewing has kept me sane with that problem.
Anyway, thank you so much for the time you put into your blog and the pleasure you bring me almost daily. Sincerly, Carolyn Ingram

As I approach my 59th birthday I can identify with so many of these sentiments. I find myself thinking about them a lot. I think it was Paul Simon who wrote, "Ah but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now."

Susan, tho' I too hate the aches & pains of aging, I actually welcome the sags, droops, grey, etc. I didn't ALWAYS. For just a short time, I felt I hadn't DONE everything that calls for 'youth.' Then I adjusted my thinking & realized that the benefits FAR outweigh the bad. I can wear comfy shoes and not CARE if they aren't a perfect match for my dress. I can openly oogle cute guys and they don't worry that I'm HITTING on them 'cause I'm OLD. (And I'm NOT, of course, but it surely is fun to walk right up to some under-25 year old and say, "Wow, are you ever H-O-T. If I were 25 years younger ...!" and have them grin.)I LIKE me. I like my age. I like my greying hair. And YOU? You are a beauty, Susan! Age has nothing to do with defining 'pretty.' And you have THE most lovely spirit! So I'M glad YOU like yourself as much as I like you!

And so looking forward to discovering myself more and what God is teaching me. And just being happy and content with me and mine. I lost my sister in law a few months ago and we were the same age. I am mourning the fact that we cant continue on this journey together. The best is yet to be. Thank you so much for posting that lovely story/poem. God BLess

Little Doll Book Underway

You Doll Front 2 I got the front cover done today for my "You Little Doll" book using the kit I bought from Lilia at Flea Market Studio. It's a little different from Lilia's, but hers are all different anyway.

I don't have the inside cover done yet. I'll show it later.

I think my plan for the inside pages will be to showcase all the women in my family when they were little girls.  That means I have to pull out all the old photos and go through them, which will be very time consuming. I'm sure to get engrossed in memories. But it'll be fun. I'll call my book "Sugar & Spice" maybe or "Little Girls & Lace" or "All Our Girls." Or something.

I hope everyone is planning a great weekend. The weather is on the verge of Alabama summertime here. Temps near 90 predicted for the weekend. And mug-gy! Whew! So I'll probably be inside as much as possible, if not more.

Happy Weekend, Friends.

Eatin' Good in the Neighborhood

Cupcakes Plain I had a baking fit yesterday afternoon and consequently supplied last night's dessert to many of the neighbors on our street. I made 24 cupcakes (yellow cake w/chocolate fudge iding). I knew I dare not leave all those cupcakes in my kitchen; that would be too tempting, so I started delivering them to neighbors. I still had enough for us, with almost a dozen leftover (in my kitchen).Cupcake Iced

Andy, Steve, and Jesse came for dinner last night. Steve had caught a mess o' catfish up at Neely Henry Lake, and that was the focus of the meal. Vann and Steve deep fried the catfish and hushpuppies. I made french fries and slaw (and cupcakes), and we had a wonderful dinner. I don't guess there's anything better than good old southern fried catfish with all the trimmings (and cupcakes).
Wholecatfish2 The guys fried the fish whole, not fileted. I love them that way. They were light and tasty--not at all "fishy." We promptly put in our request that Steve go promptly and catch some more so we can do that again--promptly.

After everyone went home, Vann watched the news while I finished reading Evidence of Things Unseen by Marianne Wiggins. I really liked this book. The prose is beautiful, and the story is hypnotic. It spans the time period between about 1919 and 1950-something and tells the story of Fos and Opal and their adopted son, Lightfoot. Fos is intrigued with constellations, falling stars, bioluminescence and x-rays. He returns from the war  (WWI) in France and falls in love with Opal, the daughter of a glassblower on the Outer Banks of N.C. They move to Knoxville, where Fos and an army buddy have a photography studio, and travel to summer fairs with Fos's x-ray machine. When Opal inherits a farm on the Clinch River and Fos's partner Flash runs afoul of the law, the couple moves to the farm and lives with their son Lightfoot, who had been abandoned, until the property is claimed for a TVA dam. In 1941, Fos gets a job at the Oak Ridge Laboratory-Site X, a part of the Manhattan Project, and helps (in a way) build the bomb. Their lives proceed from innocence and fascination with "things that glow" to the day in Aug. 1945 when the atomic bomb is dropped over Hiroshima. If you want to know more, read the book.

A Sneaky Way of Buying Fabric

Pillow Cases I'm seeing so much good work done these days with old and vintage sheets and pillowcases. Just look at this! And this too! And what about this!

So I have started my collection of yard-sale and thrift-store sheets and pillowcases. You've seen some of them--they've been on my bed. Here are some more (photo at right) that I found recently at the thrift store. Most of them cost less than 50 cents each.

I think I'm going to use the pillowcases to make book bags for my reading group friends. Or what about environmentally friendly grocery bags? Wouldn't I be a sight, showing up at the supermarket with an armload of colorful bags to carry my purchases instead of those hateful plastic bags? I'm not sure yet what I'll use my sheets and pillowcases to make. For now, I'm just going to enjoy collecting them.

I already have a lot of vintage embroidered linens--pillowcases, scarves, doilies, etc. But I've only just started collecting these colorful sheets and pillowcases. Most of them really aren't all that old, but they should work well in sewing projects.

Have you made something from sheets or pillowcases? Do you know somebody who has? Would you tell me about it, please?

More Pots & Pitchers--Then Back to the Sofa

Mama's tea pot This teapot, cup, and saucer belonged to my mama. She loved roses and so do I. My sister, Joanne (Sister Un), gave me the little pink glass rabbit.

After that long dream sequence yesterday, I figure you don't want to read anything long today--and I don't want to write anything long, so we should get along fine.

I got up this morning with my run-over-by-a-truck syndrome, After a quick cup of coffee, I took the dogs out (Daisy is visiting this weekend). Well, I don't know what it was, but Sophie saw something across the street in the woods and made a dash for it. She knows she isn't supposed to cross the street without permission, and she usually obeys--but not this time. I went after her to the edge of the woods, stepped on a rock, turned my ankle, twisted my knee, and wrenched my hip. I didn't fall, just did a James Brown move, yelled, and said a bad word. Now my run-over-by-a-truck syndrome has evolved into a hit-by-the-orient-express episode. So here's one more photo, and it's back to the sofa. Hope everyone else has a better weekend than mine is beginning to be.
Cherry Pot
The cherry teapot came from a Southern Living prop sale back in the day. Mama crocheted the doily, and the white creamer and sugar bowl were Mama's. My sister Ramey (Sister Trois) gave me the little bunny pitchers, and the white platter came from the thrift store. The old suitcase is from a yard sale on Southside in Birmingham years ago.

You can click on the photos to enlarge them, but this new Typepad thing is making the pop-up photos humongous, so you probably won't be able to see all all the photo.

Now, Bye.

Elvis and My Recurring House Dream

Since I was a child, I've had what I call simply "My House Dream."

It all started with this two-story Dutch Colonial, which, for my entire life, has stImo's House 2ood on the corner across the street from Leeds First United Methodist Church, right in the middle of my hometown.

As a child, I had never been inside the house and knew it only from the exterior, but I loved it. I would  dream (night dreams and day dreams) of what it looked like inside. I dreamed of hidden staircases and secret rooms, of wonderful furnishings and treasures around every corner. (Yeah, I was born a hopeless romantic and a lover of mystery.)

My curiosity about this house only grew when, in the summer of 1956, Elvis spent the night there. No, really! He was just beginning to gain popularity then. The house faces what, before the interstate system, was the main highway from Birmingham to Atlanta, Highway 78. Elvis was on his way to Atlanta when he decided to stop at the old Power's Cafe in Leeds and grab a bite. Word spread just up the street where the son-in-law of the owner of this house happened to be a Birmingham disc jockey. Long story short: the dj convinced Elvis to come on up to the house and sit for an interview.

There are other stories about this house, but I don't know how many of them are as true as the Elvis story. One centers around how Uncle J. acquired the house from a local doctor in a poker game. As I say, I have no proof as to the veracity of this one; but that's what my ex-husband's side of the family claimed.

When I grew up and married the nephew of the home's owners, I finally got to see the interior. I've since enjoyed many family reunions, Christmas dinners, and just plain visits in that house. My ex-husband and his uncle and aunt have passed on. Aunt Ima was the last to go, at which time the house was sold to the city to house our Chamber of Commerce.

All during my life, I have continued to have my house dream, complete with secret rooms, hidden stairways, and wonderful treasures. But after I had finally seen the inside of Aunt Ima's house, the houses in my dreams varied. Sometimes it's a house I know, sometimes one I've never seen, sometimes it's Aunt Ima's house again and it's different from what it really looks like.

309058_ea464806cd A few days ago, Andrea posted a photo of the Redman House in Watsonville, California (pictured in photo at left). I had not had my house dream for several months until last night, so I think this photo triggered it. The house in last night's dream was huge, much larger than my dream houses usually are. And it was tall, at least three stories. And dark inside. There were countless rooms and staircases. One staircase was like a ladder, but painted with bright colors. The kitchen, which was just wonderful, seemed to be located in one of the bays that you see in the photo. But instead of being in the open, there were trees all around. Being in the kitchen was like being in a wonderful tree house.

In the dream, my sister (who was carrying with her four baby kittens) and I were being shown the house by a real estate woman and the owner of the house (also a woman). I knew I had to have the house. Although it was in bad need of repair, I could see what it could become with some work. But I knew I couldn't afford the price, which seems like was in the hundreds of millions of dollars. I devised a plan to buy the house and turn it into a B&B so to generate income to pay for it.

My income alone would not swing the deal, however. "Well, I have a husband," I told the real estate woman. "That is, if I can get him to come back home." You see Vann had run off with a skinny (I mean SKINNY) blonde yuppy girl. Also, he had turned into a young Charlie Sheen.

The dream gets even weirder. I called Vann, at the skinny blonde yuppy girl's apartment, to tell him he had to come back home now. My daughter Andy answered the phone. I asked to talk to Vann and she went to get him. While she was gone I could hear her talking in the phone. And I kept yelling, "Hello! Hello!" Andy came back and told me that Vann wanted to talk to me but I would have to wait till Saturday (I don't know what day the dream was taking place in). I screamed, "Are you out of your mind?"

Weirder still: at that moment, the phone really rang on the bedside table beside my real bed. I grabbed the receiver and screamed, "HELLO!" Back here in the nondream world, Andy said, "Are you awake?" I said, "I am now."l

This is Vann explanation as to how a phone call in the present can trigger an event in a dream that appears to happen before the actual real phone call takes place: He says that the electrical impulses in our brain that carry the realizations of all of the events (the dream ones and the real ones) get jumbled up in our brains, so that the real timeline of the events doesn't coincide with what we perceive to be the timeline? Get it? He also wanted to know if the skinny blonde yuppy girl could make pies.

Okay, that was an entertaining dream. And I've often had something happen in a dream that is immediately followed by the same thing in real life -- Vann's explanation makes sense to me!

Oh my gosh, Susan. That was one busy dream. I think you should take a nap so that you will now own the house. Maybe in the next house dream you will be running the B&B in the house.

Too fun.

Good dream, hope you can continue it and tell us about it!

Tea Pots & Pitchers

Teapot 1Teapot 4Teapot 2 With not much to say today, I thought I'd show you some of my tea pot and pitcher collection. All these are located on a shelf above my dining room window. Vann built and hung the shelf for me.

My fibro symptoms have improved. The moon is waning, but I don't have enough data to know if that means anything--not yet.

Is Horatio Dead?

293.caruso.david.051908
Any "CSI Miami" fans out there? If so, you know that Monday night's season finale left Horatio Caine lying in a pool of blood, his own blood, with those piercing blue eyes staring sightlessly into nowhere and his famous metalframe shades lying beside him with one lens shot out. (And what's that about anyway? Both his eyes are intact, so he obviously wasn't shot in the eye. Was he not wearing them when he got shot? I can't remember.)

I cannot believe that the writers and producers of one of my favorite shows are going to make me wait all summer or till who knows when to find out if "H" is dead. CSIM is one of my favorite tv shows--one of the few I watch in fact. And Horatio Caine (David Caruso) is the show. Without him, there is no CSIM. I love his coolness and suaveness and corny one-liners. I'm crazy about his red hair and and blue eyes. And the style with which he wears a cheap suit is unmatched by any detective in the history of television.

So what do you think? Is Horatio dead? Did Wolfe have something to do with it? If not, what was that cryptic message, "It is done.", on his cell phone about? Will that lame ME that replaced Alex's replacement also get a bullet in the head? Will Alex return? Will Delko and Calleigh finally get it on? Do you even care?

Guess I'll just have to wait till September (or whenever) to find out the answers to all these questions.

Hang on, H. Help is on the way.

I knew we were kindred spirits! My husband and I were so annoyed with the finale!!! I keep changing my mind with what's going to happen. So many options, and with them leaving me all summer to think about I'm sure one of my ideas will be dead on. It will be out of hundreds at that point. lol

David Caruso WILL NOT be leaving CSI Miami. That rumor was started by Gabriele Huber, the Austrian woman who has been charged with stalking and threatening to murder David Caruso. Huber was scheduled to be tried on these charges on April 16 and fled to avoid prosecution. She has been on the run ever since. While in hiding, Huber floods the Internet on a daily basis with slanderous and libelous remarks about David Caruso.

I maintain a blog that tracks Huber and attempts to refute the rumors she posts on Caruso-related Forums and Boards.

Challenges, Challenges, Challenges

WordsWell now, I finally get to the point where I know a little about what I'm doing on this blog and Typepad goes and screws with the buttons, bells, and whistles. The Post screen looks all different, and the way you post images is different, or at least the way they're sized. But then I now have the option of different fonts that I didn't have before, so I guess that's good. This here one that I'm using now is Comic Sans MS, which is one of my favorite fonts. Well, enough about that.

I was going to tell you the significance of the box of words in the photo, but I've just about got out of the notion to do it while I was trying to figure out how to work Typepad. I was going to tell you about all the different creative challenges I've joined this spring.

There's the 1% Well Read Challenge, where one must read 10 books from a (very subjective) list of 1001 books, many of which I've never heard of and many of which I would never ever attempt to read. But I did find 10 that interested me, and I'm reading my May selection now, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I read this book when I was in college and remembered it being a very romantic and tragic tale about Heathcliff and Cathy. This time I'm finding that it's more about a gang of crazy moorlanders who hate each other and keep running around doing all manner of foolishness and causing chaos. There isn't really a likeable person in the whole book. I guess what sounds romantic when one is 20-something can be foolishness when one is, well, not 20-something.
10487
Some of the members of the Yahoo Art Quilt Group that I belong to are doing a challenge involving this book. We'll work through the book one lesson at a time this summer, eventually producing several small art quilts (9 1/2" x 11" or something like that). Homework for the first lesson is to choose a theme. I'm stuck. I have written down about a billion themes and can't decide which one I like--or if I really like any of them. One of my ideas for a theme wasn't really a theme at all, unless you could say my theme would be "WORDS." I would use that little box of words that you see at the top of this post. (I got this at a yard sale several years ago and have since used a few of the words in altered art. For this challenge, I would draw out one word for each quilt and make my quilt based on whatever that words suggests to me.

And then there's the Two-Color Quilt Challenge that Nicole over at Sister's Quilts began. I have two blocks made for that. Actually I have more done than that. The block is attic windows and all my "windows" are machine embroidery, which is all done.

And finally, there's my personal Altered Playing Cards One-a-Week Challenge.

So do you think that's too many challenges for the year? We'll see, won't we?

Errata:
Even after one commenter wrote me a cryptic message about my last post, I didn't realize that I had told you that my dryer vent hose was clogged with LENT, when what I meant was LINT. I have finally realized my error, and I want to tell you that I'm mortified, just mortified. A spelling error? Me? It's probably the first one I've ever made in my life. Oh God! Something's happening to my nose! It's getting longer....and longer. Oh noooooooooooo.

Lent, vent, lint, vint(age), I can see how it might twist around in the brain. I did the same thing with some word a few weeks ago, had himalayan or "himi" on the brain so whatever word it was came out all wrong. I've slept since then and forgotten what it was now.

I KWYM about Wuthering Heights, even though I do read it every few years(because I love it). Dontcha just want to slap them around for all the whining? I like Jane Eyre better, and Silas Marner.

Blame It on the Moon

Moon_cat" There are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls."
~George Carlin, Brain Droppings, 1997

My fibromyalgia has gone into severe flare again. After weeks of mostly feel-good days, with a few feel-poor days, I'm now experiencing a round of feel-like-s__t days. Lots of pain, sheer exhaustion, stiffness--it's that "I Feel Like I've Been Hit By a Truck" thing.

My sweet friend Jean asked if I had considered that maybe my flares (at least some of them) are coinciding with the full moon. And to tell the truth, I've never thought of that. I know that weather changes affect me negatively, but I'm not sure about the moon. I'm going to start today keeping a pain journal to see if I can pinpoint just exactly what causes the bad times. I don't know how that will help, but it can't hurt. (Or maybe it can; right now, everything hurts.)

Have any of you experienced the full moon affecting any chronic pain condition or any other health condition? I've done a Google, but can't find anything.
Dryer_hose
Molly was right about the trouble with the dryer--the vent was completely clogged with 12 years worth of lent. I was afraid we might discover that chipmunks or snakes or some kind of critters had been bedding down in it, but nope, just dust bunnies and fur balls--tons of them.

I told Vann last night at supper what Molly had told me might be the trouble. So first thing this morning, we got to work. Well mostly Vann got to work. I held things. After discovering the extent of the lent accumulation, Vann decided to just remove the old vent pipes and install new ones. So after a trip to Lowe's, that's just what he did. The dryer works like a new one now. Thanks, sweet Molly. You saved us a few hundred bucks there, kid. We owe you.

46601e7a003c306c85400cb8e1 After helping Vann (by holding things) remedy the dryer problem, and after fixing lunch, and doing a couple of loads of laundry (three, actually), and making 48 stuffed eggs for a church dinner tonight, and delivering said eggs to the church,  I'm going to go and lie down. As Miss Niecey on "Clean House" says, "I'm tired of all this mayhem and foolishness."

I love "Clean House"--especially when my house is in need of cleaning and straightening. I can watch that show and always find somebody whose house is much worse than mine. It gives me hope. Plus I just love Miss Niecey. Some people, I hear, think she's too much of a black stereotype. I don't see it. I just think she's pretty, smart, and, funny.

Excuse me now, while I go and take a big girl pill. Niecey sent me a bottle of them for my birthday.

Sorry to hear you haven't been feeling that great lately. The only thing I've ever heard about the moon & health issues: my Mom has Alzheimers but still able to live in an assisted living facility. The manager there told me that another lady there with A.D. tends to wander outside & do things very "out of sorts" when there is a full moon. I thought that was odd but maybe there is something to "the moon" thing! Feel better soon.

Hi Susan, first off I hope you get some relief from your discomfort. Secondly, as a nurse of 40 years now, I can attest to the full moon affecting all sorts of things....more babies born then and also more problems with people who have disabilities( lots more ER visits for trauma also)....so you are not being weird for contemplating that. When I was doing psych nursing, some of the patients were wild during full moon....has to do with magnetic energy fields of the earth...like the ebb/flow of the tides. Take good care.!

LOL, my brother's xwife used to call me "always right Molly", behind my back of course, she hated me(because I was always right). I should get a tee-shirt made huh? Good to know that I really was in the case of your dryer! Ours did that a few years ago so I had a hunch. Now we are dealing with baby rats coming in the garage, I'm afraid they'll nest in my vent hose, eeeeek!!!

Sorry to hear you are feeling like roadkill. What the heck are you doin' up deviled eggs for?? You should be reading with your feet up. I'm a believer in moon stuff and also in barometric pressure stuff(like my headaches in the low pressure before a storm and other people who have joint pains). My cycles have been a "new moon" thing for almost 2 years now, that has never happened before in my life so it might be just a fluke, but who knows.

Hope you get over your spell soon.

So sorry your pain is flaring up. The only chronic pain I've ever had was migraines, a long time ago. I never noticed if the moon had any influence--was too busy hurting to notice the moon. Maybe you need another long weekend of rest and not much activity.

I was a bartender for seven years and I can attest to all the weirdos coming out to eat dinner and drink and than acting pretty darn stupid when the moon was full. All the waitresses would brace for a strange couple of days too. So I think its not far fetched to link illness to it also, after all we link knee pain or arthritis to damp weather or weather changes.

I sure would like one of your delicious deviled eggs just about now. You are the champion.

I have been paying attention to this for a year. Yes, It does have something to do with it but, I don't know what or why I hurt worse during these times. I hurt all the time but, I have noticed that something about the moon changing and rain together makes it even worse.

Hi! The moon exerts about as much pull on you as does a piece of furniture; but unlike furniture it affects the atmosphere and thus the weather, so it could affect you indirectly. It's important to keep records and not rely on your memory. As soon as you get a notion, you notice everything that fits and forget what doesn't. Nurses are often convinced that more babies are born during the full moon but hospital records show no effect.

Good luck -- are you topping up on all the usual suspects, such as zinc, magnesium, and calcium?

Quilt Sewn Blue

Falicia_1

Yesterday, between three long walks and a billion trips outside with Sophie, I worked on Falicia's wedding quilt. The top is all done except for the borders. And I can't decide whether I'm going to do a pieced or plain border. I have some Bible verses printed on fabric that are just the right size for the corner squares.

Thanks to sweet Molly, I think I know what's wrong with my dryer now. Maybe we won't have to buy a new one after all. Molly asked if I had checked the vent. Duh! No, I hadn't. But I did yesterday. No air was coming through. So I'm pretty sure that's what's wrong. When Vann gets home from Texas tomorrow (HURRAY!), I'll get him to help me move the dryer so we can clean out the vent. Thanks, Molly. You probably saved us some bucks.

I have to go grocery shopping today, something I like about as much as I like dusting. Got to get ready for Sophie's PopPop's return tomorrow. She's going to be ecstatically happy, although she has nothing to complain about in his absence. Except for the day when we got 2 1/2 inches of rain, the whole neighborhood has been catering to her. Paul has taken her riding on the 4-wheeler every day except the rainy one. Paul, Gene, and Bob check on her and make sure she has plenty of treats and attention. That dog should be called The Queen of Castle Oaks. Or Spoiled Rotten. I guess they both fit.

Love that picture of Sophie, how cute! Also love the butterfly card! Have you checked your vent on your dryer? If it is heating up and blowing air then maybe it isn't able to flow. You might have a blockage somewhere in the hose or at the mouth of the vent. Mine does that sometimes and takes forfreakin'ever to dry. I just realized its a 13-year-old dryer! Not too shabby huh?!

Hey there Susan. I am not trying to bother you but I have not received your package yet. Just want to let you know because my post office sometimes loses my mail for some reason. It has been since February that my Mother passed away and I had her mail forwarded to me but have not received one piece. I asked about it and mysteriously I started getting her mail...go figure. Just let me know so I can look for it.

Altered Playing Card #20/52, Etc.

Card_20
This is Card #20, entitled
"Butterfly 8." Can anyone guess what movie starring Elizabeth Taylor I'm alluding to with the title?

It has been raining here since about 6:00 this morning-- steady,  hard rain. It is now 2:25 p.m. Sophie didn't pee or anything until just about 30 minutes ago when she finally had to give it up and go out in the downpour. She was not happy. So far, we've had about 2 inches of rain, I think.

I guess it's the weather, but I have had a headache since last evening. Didn't get much sleep last night, so I'm crabby today. Good thing nobody except Sophie has to put up with me. Vann's still in Texas.

What else? I've been trying to get the laundry done all day, but my dryer is on the fritz. It heats up and turns and blows and everything, but each load of clothes takes about 72 hours to dry (or something like that). I know I have to buy a new dryer. But that's like buying tires or getting the septic tank pumped out. Lots of money and not much fun.

Sophie_may_2I'm either going to work on Falicia's wedding quilt (which is almost done) or take a nap.

Just a few hours left to sign up for the 500-Post Blog Giveaway. I'll draw for the prizes tomorrow. So hurry on over and get your name in the pot if you haven't yet.

Nope, can't think of the movie. Great card by the way. I wish you'd send just a little bit of that rain my way. I'd be very grateful.

Hi Susan. I get it! The movie, "Butterfield 8".
I don't think I ever saw it, but I've heard of it. All that rain and a dryer that won't dry? Sounds like a bummer. Glad you got your essential oil, anyway. Fix up a spray and spritz it around. Might lift your spirits.
Nancy

Yep, it's Butterfield 8.

Poor Sophie girl! When a girls gotta go, a girls gotta go.

It has been rainy here for weeks! I hate it.
My drive has been flooded and my backyard. I hate walking the dogs in the rain as much as they hate walking in it.
I have gotten a lot done inside the house though.
Sending you love, Nita

On 05/15/2008, Karyl said ...

Is the movie Butterfield 8 -- I cheated and looked it up as I really was curious!

And as for Sophie -- we had a peek-a-poo named Sam and he would refuse and "hold it" for hours also in rainy weather and snowy - frigid weather. Who can really blame them. :o)

Thought I was the only one having a bad time of it -- this weather can really wear a persons sunny side down after awhile! Hang in there as the sun is coming-- okay that is what the weather guy said and if Illinois may see some sun I am sure Blackberry Creek will Too!!!!!

LOL- Karyl in Illinois

The Mystery at Moo Manor

Cow_house_2
The mystery is why anybody would want their house painted up like a Holstein cCow_house_headow. We passed this house on our way from Panama City, Florida to Camilla, Georgia last month while we were on vacation. I meant to show it when I was posting vacation pics, but forgot. I wanted so badly to knock on their little cow door and ask if I could come in and see the inside. There's no telling  what I would find in there. But I didn't. I just took my snaps of the outside and hightailed it before somebody came out. But you know, I bet I'm not the first person to stop and take a photo of this bungalow.

Don't forget to sign up for the 500th Post Giveaway if you haven't already done so. The drawing is this Friday.

On 05/14/2008, Nellie said ...

Well, now! I think I could possibly imagine what the inside looks like ... very likely, like our cottage, MaCowCowA. A few years ago a young neighbor girl walked in our kitchen door and began counting cows. By the time she had passed through the kitchen, dining room and playroom to leave by another door she had counted over a 123 cows. I didn't have the heart to point out the ones she had missed. This is all my husband's doing. If he had free reign, I suspect there would be black cow spots painted an our 3-story barn of a cottage.

Silks and Satins And Linen That Shows....

F_pink_flower

I have a friend who works for a decorator. For weeks now, she has been trying to give me some scraps and samples that the decorator was about to throw away. I kept telling her, nicely, that I wasn't interested because I have so much fabric that I don't really need more.

Finally she wore me down and I told her I'd take it. And am I ever glad I did. It is some of the most beautiful fabric I've ever seen, most of it silk. I've spent all morning sorting it and folding it and organizing it. There's tons of the stuff, and I certainly can't use it all and don't have anyplace to store any of it. I'm giving some to a friend who makes crazy quilts. And I'm going to make jackets and vests from a lot of it.

F_pattern I bought this jacket pattern over a year ago. I think it will be perfect to make jackets from some of the fabric. I'm going to make one for my friend who gave me the fabric and at least one for me.

Some of the pieces are large enough to make pillows too. And handbags and maybe lamp shades and table runners. As you can probably tell, I'm really excited about this fabric.

My friend wants me to make more banners for the church with some of it too. She thought the butterfly pieces would be beautiful combined with an angel. I think she's right.

Below are photos of some of the most striking pieces of the stash.

What All

WHAT ALL I GOT
Md_cards_2 I had a great Mother's Day. I got a beautiful group of cards to grace my mantle and two precious pots of dwarf carnations to cute up my kitchen window sill. After a while, I'll put them in my backyard flower garden, which is in dire need of attention right now.
Vann took me to lunch at Carrabas. We sat at the pasta bar and watched a crew of amazing cooks work like their pants were on fire. We ate shrimp scampi with the most amazing lemon butter sauce, drank sweet tea, and had fun.

Md_flowers
When we came home, I found my sweet flowers on the kitchen table where Andy had left them. Then, guess what? I took a nap. While Vann made his final preparations for a trip to Texas with his buddies, I snoozed on the sofa.

In the evening, our out-of-state kids called to wish me "Happy Mother's Day." Then we watched "Get Shorty," one of my favorite movies. It was a most memorable Mother's Day, and I thank all my family for making it so.

*********************************************************************************************************
WHAT ALL I FOUND
Md_cup On Friday, I delivered a carload of donations to the thrift store. Of course, I couldn't leave without having a look through the aisles. I found this fine Laurel Burch mug, and the little yellow pitcher in my kitchen window.

*********************************************************************************************************

WHAT ALL I'M READING
Md_books
I hardly ever read just one book at a time. There are too many books to do that.

I started Across the High Lonesome last week. I'm such a pushover for book promotion blurbs. Larry McMurtry wrote one for this book, saying he liked it, so I bought it. So far, some 100 pages into it, I'm not impressed. But I'm not giving up yet.

Wuthering Heights is my first book for the 1% Well Read Challenge. I had forgotten what an engrossing read this book is. There's something about Heathcliff and Cathy that makes them two of the best fictional characters ever. Sort of like Scarlett and Rhett but even better/worse.

I'm reading the Art Quilt Workbook in preparation for a summer project with my Yahoo Journal Quilt group. Evidence of Things Unseen by Marianne Wiggins is the June choice for my book club. And The Bible just helps me with the answers to hard questions--sort of a spiritual cheat sheet.

Remember my 500th Post Giveaway. If you haven't already entered for Friday's drawing, go here to read about it.

500 blogs - well, blog-entries, that's a whole lot. I guess I'm still quite the newby as I'm much closer to 100. Congratulations on this important occasion and nice of you to commemorate it with your give-aways.

Good wishes,
Marne
