My One-a-Week Challenge for 2008

CardsI have this old deck of cards. There's nothing special about it--except that it's the deck with which my mama played solitaire during the last few years of her life. Almost every time I would go by to see her, she would be sitting at her dining table playing. She handled these cards so much, that I feel sure there's some of her left still clinging to them.

When my sisters and I divvied up Mama's treasures after she died in 2005, among the things I brought home was the deck of cards. I put it in the drawer of my china cabinet, thinking I might use the cards to make something someday. Well I'm thinking that day is about here.

Here's my plan. There are 52 cards in the deck, you know, and 52 weeks in the year 2008. So I'm challenging myself to alter one card a week for the entire year. I've thought about this for a while, but was hesitant to commit. Then Terri at Stegart encouraged me, and I made my decision. Terri has made one journal quilt a week for the entire year of 2007. If you haven't visited her blog and seen her journal quilts, I encourage you to do so. They're fantastic.

So I've said it, and blogged it. Now I have to get to work. I will choose a card at random each week in no particular order. My theme will be "Flowers" because Mama loved flowers so much.

Happy New Year everyone. Stay safe tonight..

What a wonderful idea! I just love this! My mom passed away 3 years ago. She was also a quilter. She quilted me a Christmas Tree Skirt. Yesterday, when I was folding it up to store, I gave it a big hug, and just knew I was hugging my Mom.

Happt New Year!

Happy New Year to you too Susan, and to Vann and Miss Sophie Belle. My grandma was a fierce card player too, and I believe she was actually buried with her favorite deck of cards, as well as with her favorite hand made quilt! I got her rosary, which was well handled by her, and I think I really do feel her "vibe" through them.

Forgot to say your journal idea sounds very intriguing. Can't wait to see what you do.

Are you going to actually change one of the cards each week? or use it as inspiration? I would have a hard time using a card but maybe you can do it.

All Is Calm; All Is Bright; All Is Cluttered

AngelsPhillip and Carrie flew back to Wyoming yesterday. This morning, Amy left to visit family in south Mississippi. She will fly home to Dallas on New Years Day from New Orleans.

The house is quiet, except when Sophie has a barking fit because somebody or something is moving outside. The sun is shining, after several days of clouds and/or rain. And the house is a mess.

Some of the Christmas decorations are down; some are still up; none have been put away. There are far too many sweet things (cookies, cakes, pies, brownies, candy, etc.) left lying around. The laundry hamper is running over onto the bedroom floor. And the beds are unmade.

I hate the aftermath of Christmas--the week between Christmas and New Years. It's probably due to some kind of seasonal effective disorder or something. During that week, I cringe at the sight of Christmas decorations, I want to scream at the after-Christmas sales commercials on tv, and I'd just as soon not hear another chorus of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" or "Holly Jolly Christmas."

But the task remains to put away all the Santas, stars, glass balls, angels, snowmen, wreaths, linens, and all that other hoop-de-do; so I better get at it.

For me it is still Christmas until the day after January 1st. So I will take the tree down either New Years Day or the day after -- I think I will make a turkey New Years Day. I think it is because we take a long holiday at this time of year and because we don't put the tree up until a few days before Christmas. I like this after the "Christmas day storm" quiet time.

Happy New Year

On 12/29/2007, Patti said ...

I like to get it all put away as quickly as possible - partly for those very reasons. Once Christmas is past I like to start looking forward to a new year and a new beginning. When possible we put the decorations away the very next day. If not possible then as soon after as we can. This year it will be tomorrow. Good thing it's supposed to rain hard all day - Fred can help me instead of going golfing LOL!

On 12/30/2007, Molly said ...

Same here. This year, for whatever reason, it seemed that I wasn't able to stop and enjoy the Christmas decorations in our house(and elsewhere). I had too much to DO! That, and the sight of excess everywhere(not at our place) just makes me sad. Ok, off that soapbox before I start!LOL

Hope you have a great day with your un-decorating. I started mine yesterday with taking the tree down. It was so dry that it needed to go asap. Today I'll work on the rest of the obviously Christmasy stuff but I'm leaving my holly branches and a few other things up for a while longer. My favorite way to un-decorate is to play soothing Christmas music, harps and more obscure carols. It is kind of a ritual for me.

On 12/30/2007, mom2fur said ...

You know, I just love Christmas, but I'm always ready to put it away when it's done. It's been a long time since I felt after-Christmas blues. I look forward to having my house back in 'what we call order.' (Which means, organized chaos.) I started to put my things away, too. It'll take me a week at least since it involves wrapping, packing and carting up to the attic. I started rearranging my office, too. What is it about the holidays that makes you want to reorganize?

On 12/30/2007, Pesky Patti said ...

All is good in my household. Still need to put things away and I like to do it before the 1st as I have a little superstition about having bad luck if you don't get the tree down by then. 'Course in my case it just involves carrying the little tree back up to the storage area.

It is a relief to relax and remember all the things we can be thankful for.

Thank you for sharing your holidays with us.

On 12/31/2007, Karla said ...

We are so alike! I go through a depression in the weeks after Christmas. For me, it is the end of the magical time of year and since I'm up in the Northeast - a sign of the beginning of a cold winter with nothing to look forward to until Easter. I know that makes me sound like such a downer! I get so sad putting away all the decorations. I took everything down yesterday except for the tree - that leaves the biggest hole and makes me the saddest. I might put it off until next weekend when I'll really be sick of looking at it!

I too am just so over Christmas. As soon as it is Thanksgiving, I can't wait to get all the decorations up and start playing Christmas music, but on Dec. 26 it is just done. I met a woman at my nail salon today who was saying she had her tree out by the curb by 4:00 Christmas afternoon! Her husband came downstairs after a nap, with his camera, wanting to get a photo of the tree and she had to say "What tree?"

This was such an awful thing to hear about yesterday. Sadly, I thought it was only a matter of time before some sort of attempt was made on her life. I'm the events director for a university and we had her scheduled to speak a few years ago. She had to cancel at the last minute due to her mother's illness. I think it would have been quite an honor to have met her.

Down for the Count

Wii_boxingVann, Amy, Phillip, and I accepted an invitation to share Christmas dinner with Gene and Maria and their family last night. Sophie had a chance to visit with two of her doggie buddies, Lacey and Misty, and we all enjoyed a delicious holilday meal and each other's company.

That's me Wii boxing with Nikki, Gene and Maria's granddaughter. She KO'ed me in the first round.

Vann, Phillip, and Amy left early this morning for south Georgia to visit with Vann's folks. They kindly allowed me to beg off the trip this time so I could rest up from all the recent festivities. For that, I thank them kindly.

I awoke this morning thinking thank goodness it's over, then I got up and took a look at my house. Paper, bags, boxes, gifts, decorations, cookies, candy strewn everywhere. I really wanted to just crawl back in bed, but I brewed a pot of coffee instead.

And what is it about banana nut bread? Is this the new fruit cake? I have little loaves and big loaves of the stuff all over the kitchen. Good thing we like banana nut bread (unlike fruit cake).

I hope all of you had a happy, safe, and well fed Christmas. In closing, I give you this link to Anita's blog. John Buchanan expresses my sentiments about the Christmas aftermath very well.

People Crackers Doggy Treat Recipe

People_crackers_2Here's the recipe for the doggy treats from my December 22, 2007 post.

INGREDIENTS
2 cups whole-wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cornmeal
1/4 sunflower kernels, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup corn syrup or molasses
2 eggs beaten
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons oil (I use olive oil)

Mix all ingredients. Add more milk if needed; dough should be firm.

Roll dough out on a floured surface to a thickness of about 1/2 inch. Use cookie cutter (any shape you like) to cut out treats.

Bake at 35o degrees for 25-30 minutes or until lightly toasted.

If you want the treats to be harder, leave them in the oven with the heat turned off for an hour.

People Crackers

People_crackersI baked for most of the day yesterday. Lots of cookies. I even made these People Crackers dog treats for Sophie and Daisy. Of course, Sophie had to sample them. They won her stamp of approval, as in "Give me another one, SuSu!

We have another neighborhood party tonight--this time at Bob and Mary Beth's. Even Sophie is invited to this one. We're taking cookies--the kind that people eat, not the dog treats.

GO HERE TO FIND THE RECIPE FOR THE PEOPLE CRACKER DOGGY TREATS.

Have fun at the party!

Reading and Chewing

ReadingHere we are, Sophie and me, each of us participating in one of our favorite activities last night. I'm reading and she's chewing her bone--on my feet. Her favorite spot to chew is on the feet of someone she loves. At one point, she dropped the bone on the floor. Instead of getting down to retrieve it, she just started chewing on my toes. That dog!

Phillip and Carrie came in last night from Wyoming. Vann picked them up at the airport at about 9:00. We were all glad to see Phillip (Carrie stopped off at her parents' house down the road, so Sophie and I haven't seen her yet) but I think Sophie was gladdest of all. She had a whining, crying, jumping, running fit.

Amy will be coming in tomorrow. Cait and Kathryn aren't coming again this year, and that makes me sad. I wish everyone could be here. Enough of that. No sadness allowed.

Today I make dog treats. Doggies like Christmas goodies too.

Triple Tagged!

PeaceI was tagged yesterday by three different blogging friends to participate in the meme that invites you to share interesting/random/weird things about yourself.

Vivian, Wendy, and Phyllis, are my taggers. You can visit their blogs and read their interesting/random facts about themselves by clicking on their names.

Here are the rules:
1. Link to your tagger and post these rules.
2. Share 7 facts about yourself: some random, some weird.
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post and list their names (linking to them).
4. Let them know they've been tagged by leaving a comment at their blogs.

Okay, now here go my seven interesting/random/weird facts about me. Bet you didn't know that:

A. I talk to myself and my dog quite a lot. We listen.
B. I love books and movies about the Mafia.
C. I can't roller skate. Never could.
D. I have been hopelessly in love with all of the following: Ricky Nelson, Eddie Fisher, Elvis Presley, Roy Rogers, Fabian, and Vann C. I got over all of them except the last.
E. I am NOT a Beatles Fan.
F. I sang "Oh Holy Night" in a school musical when I was 12. (You didn't want to be there.)
G.
When I was a very small child, while sick with the measles, I had an out-of-body experience. (Maybe that's why I talk to myself now.)

I'm supposed to tag seven (or is it five?) people. I know that a lot of you have already been tagged, but I don't know who all. So, if you haven't been tagged (or even if you have) and would like to do this, consider yourself tagged. Just read the rules above and do what they say.

I'm going now to make a nice tuna salad for supper. Have a good evening, all my blogging friends.

Oh, I've been meaning to ask. Do you get a lot of pheasants and other wild things to cook? My uncle used to drop off freshly killed and dressed pheasants on his way home from a day of hunting. It was kind of icky because they left the feet on!

PS...I talk to my animals all the time. And they listen, too. The trouble with most humans is that they only want to communicate with words!

A Shiny Red Present for PopPop

Lawnmower_2Who knows how he got that big old thing down our skinny chimney, but here's what Santa has already brought Vann--a brand new Craftsman lawn tractor. It has a roomy, easy-to-use bagging system (which isn't attached in the photo), and four wheels on the blade so it doesn't make scalped places in the lawn, and I don't know what all. (I'm sorry, I don't know a lot about mowers and tractors.) But I know it put a smile on Vann's face, and that put a smile on my face, and Sophie just wants to go for a ride.

Vann spent the afternoon yesterday mowing and mulching. The lawn looks fantastic, even though it's winter brown.

Hope everyone out there in Bloggyville is getting ready for a happy, happy Christmas. Peace.

Lawn_mower

Oh my! Look at the rear tire on the left side of the photo (you'll need to click on the photo and enlarge it to see). Looks like we've already made a pass over a pile of doggy poo. Guess the mower is thoroughly christened now.

("It wasn't me," says Sophie. "I always go in somebody else's yard.")

Christmas at Quilters Guild

Guild_1We didn't have a lot of items presented for show and tell at Birmingham Quilters Guild's annual Christmas Coffee yesterday. But the ones we had were pretty awesome.

Jan H. makes lovely quilts, and the one in the photo at left is no exception--French Provencal fabrics and dancing girls. I just wanted to grab it off the clothes line and make a run for it.

As always, you can click on any of the photos to enlarge.

Dust_bin_quilts In the December issue of Quilting Arts magazine, there's an article by Annette Morgan about salvaging quilts that haven't turned out to your liking (see photo at left). Morgan uses painting and other techniques to turn her quilted dogs into works of art.  Judy Woods found the article at a time when she was displeased with a portrait quilt she'd made of her daughter. Judy said she didn't even finish reading her magazine but immediately ran to her studio and began refurbishing the quilt, using the techniques described by Morgan

Unfortunately, Judy didn't take a photo of her before quilt. But here's the results after she applied Annette Morgan's "Dustbin Quilts" ideas.

How very sad. Dan Fogelberg is also a favorite of both my husband and me. After we got married we were combining our music collections and we had so many of the same albums including Dan Fogelberg. I said it was a good way to start a new marriage.

How sad...I didn't even realize he was ill. We still have his albums from college. Twin Sons from Different Mothers (with Tim Weisberg) is a favorite. Thank you for letting us know.

He had an amazing way about him. Believe in Me and Longer are two of my absolute favorite songs ever, also love Make Love Stay. It is sad when someone so talented leaves us too early, like my other favorite, John Denver. Their kind of music connects people to themselves in such tender and real ways.

Did you get your book yet(Certain Poor Shepherds)? I still haven't located mine yet but I don't need to be distracted by reading right now, too much stuff to get done!

Very sad news. I just love his Same Old Lang Syne song. I read once that he wrote it about meeting an old girlfriend in a convience store in Peoria, IL while visiting family there. He will be missed, very talented artist. I notice I've heard his Old Lang Syne song alot on radio today. Bless his heart...rest in peace Dan. Prayers to all of his loved ones in this rough time.

Baking Cookies

Sunday_5_2 One of my favorite holiday traditions is baking cookies.  Some years I bake lots and lots of cookies and give them for gifts; some years I bake just a few cookies for us. This year, the plan is to make lots.

Yesterday, I got started on my cookie baking. I made four dozen Short Bread Kiss Cookies. You roll your cookie dough into 1" balls and bake them that way. As soon as you take the baked balls of dough out of the oven, you push a candy kiss into the center of the ball.

Sunday_2 I've always made my kiss cookies with a peanut butter cookie recipe, which I will do again this year. But I found a Ghirardelli shortbread kiss cookie mix, and thought it looked interesting. The mix even included Ghirardelli milk chocolate kisses. Ummmmmm. The cookies are wonderful--a combination of buttery cookie and chocolaty goodness. I used the chocolate cherry Hershey kisses in a few of them, and boy! was that good. For the peanut butter kiss cookies, I'll use the milk chocolate Hershey kisses. And I'm thinking of making some chocolate kissies and using the rest of the chocolate cherry kisses.

Sunda_1 I sacked up a couple dozen of the kiss cookies to take as a hostess gift to the couple, Paul and Karen, who gave our neighborhood Christmas party last night. Clare, I have to brag to you about my frugality here. The bag in the photo holds the gift cookies. I used a purchased plain brown gift bag, a scrap of decorative paper, a blow-in subscription card from the new Mary Englebreit magazine, and four gold brads to make it.

Oh, and the bowl of shiny red ornaments? I got them yesterday at a yard sale for 25 cents. Did I do good, or what?

The temps have finally dropped here; and they're still dropping. It's cold and windy outside. Vann is away at hunting camp, and Sophie and I have decided to spend the whole day inside (except for when Nature calls Miss Sophie out) and read. I'm reading The Time Traveler's Wife by a woman with a funny name. It promises to be a good one. Happy Sunday everyone.

So...the cute card on the front of the bag is just a subscription card? What a brilliant idea! I never thought about something like that! Brag away...I'm impressed!

Oh, those cookies look delicious! The ripe bananas in our fruit bowl are making me think I should bake banana date bread later today after church and last minute shopping. We're expecting snow all week...brrr.

I love baking cookies too. I no longer do that (no one to eat them but Jim and myself), but when I worked I would bake dozens and dozens starting at Thanksgiving, until I had a huge assortment in the freezer, and take them to work and give them to friends. For some reason, I am especially fond of those bland sugar cookie with colorful icing. I have recently discovered white chocolate-cranberry cookies at Vons, and they are just about as good as anything I might make, so that's the cookie we eat. When we are eating cookies, that is. Which is rarely, but I do love cookies.

Watch the Lamb

Lamb

Walking on the road to Jerusalem,
The time had come to sacrifice again,
My two small sons,
They walk beside me on the road,
The reason that they came
was to watch the lamb.
Daddy, daddy,
What will we see there,
There's so much that we don't understand.
So I told them of Moses
and father Abraham,
Then I said, dear children, watch the lamb.
There will be so many in Jerusalem today,
We must be sure the lamb doesn't run away.
And I told them of Moses
and father Abraham,
Then I said, dear children, watch the lamb.
When we reached the city,
I knew something must be wrong,
There were no joyful worshipers,
No joyful worship songs.
I stood there with my children
in the midst of angry men,
Then I heard the crowd cry out,
Crucify Him.
We tried to leave the city
but we could not get away,
Forced to play in this drama
a part I did not wish to play.
Why upon this day
were men condemned to die?
Why were we standing here,
Where soon they would pass by?
I looked and said, even now they come.
The first one cried for mercy,
The people gave him none,
The second one was violent,
He was arrogant and loud,
I still hear his angry voice
screaming at the crowd,
Then someone said there's Jesus,
I scarce believed my eyes,
A man so badly beaten,
He barely looked alive.
Blood poured from His body,
From the pores upon His brow,
Running down the cross,
Falling to the ground.
I watched Him as He struggled,
I watched Him as He fell.
The cross came down upon His back,
The crowd began to yell.
In that moment I felt such agony,
In that moment I felt such loss,
Till a Roman soldier grabbed my arm
and screamed, you, carry His cross.
At first I tried to resist him,
Then his hand reached for his sword,
So I knelt and took
the cross from the Lord,
I placed it on my shoulder,
And started down the street,
The blood that he'd been shedding
was running down my cheek.
They led us to Golgotha,
They drove nails
deep in His feet and hands,
Yet upon the cross I heard Him pray,
Father, forgive them.
Oh, never have I seen such love
in any other eyes.
Into thy hands I commit my spirit
He prayed and then He died,
I stood for what seemed like years,
I'd lost all sense of time
until I felt two tiny hands
holding tight to mine,
The children stood there weeping,
I heard the oldest say,
Father please forgive us,
the lamb ran away.
Daddy, daddy,
What have we seen here?
There's so much
that we don't understand,
So I took them in my arms,
And we turned and faced the cross,
Then I said, dear children,
watch the lamb.

But I Did

PlatesI have been saying all along that I am not going to do any Christmas shopping this year. There are several reasons for this. First, although I love giving, I hate (I mean, I HATE) the commercialism of Christmas. It all makes me want to find me a soap box, climb up on it, and pontificate till the cows come home.

Second, I don't feel like shopping; shopping literally hurts my body. Any time I spend more than ten or 15 minutes at one time on my feet, I'm asking for trouble.

Third, I really would like to protest the whole 'tis-the-season-to-be-spending concept by boycotting all retailers for the entire month of December--which, of course, I can't do, as one must have milk, bread, and dog food.

So what all did I do today? I went Christmas shopping, that's what. And I did it so sneakily too. I had to pick up a couple of neighbor gifts for neighborhood get-togethers this weekend, so I told myself I was going to Books-a-Million (BAM!) to get two Paula Dean cookbooks, that's all. Well, BAM! is on the way to my favorite thrift store, so I decided to run by there and check to see if I could find some more Christmas plates to add to my holiday table. I found three Christmas plates; but even more wonderful, I found the lovely blue plate and the nice white platter in the photo above. The blue plate has a crack that is hardly noticeable, and the white platter is in perfect condition.

OK, then BAM! is right beside the Target store, so I decided to run in Target really quick to get a jug of milk. I should have stayed home and sent Vann to get the milk and the Paula Dean cookbooks. The minute I walked into Target I was snagged by the bear trap of holiday shopping. When I left Target, I had bought Nick and Nora pajamas (oh, such darling prints) for all the girls in the familly, area rugs to protect the new carpet, a new set of sheets for our bed (they were 40% off, for Pete's sake), ingredients to make half a million dozen cookies, a box of colorful Christmas balls, and, oh yeah, the milk.

And I still had to make it through BAM! I didn't do too bad there, though. Got the Paula Dean cookbooks for the neighbors, a Paula Dean magazine for me, and a Somerset Studio Gallery mag for me. All in all, the day only cost me about--well, never mind that. I don't even want to think about it. I just want to stretch out on the sofa with my heating pad and new magazines and stay there till all this holiday nonsense is over. Bah-hum-freakin'-bug!

Dear Mrs. Scrooge...

I hear you, girl! I went out yesterday with a short list. All the things my Mom wanted were nowhere to be found...a flannel shirt, a nut chopper of the old kind (no motor) and a sifter. Sounds simple. No luck. But I wound up buying me some socks, a pair of shoes and a purse! Seems like every year when I go Christmas shopping, I'm looking so hard for other people that I find things for me instead! But that's the only time I do it all year. Besides, my BD is this month and Mom was glad that I had bought my own presents..

And, like you, my body was screaming at me after just an hour...

I can't wait to relax. I love December 26th...

AAAACK!!! That blue one is my pattern!!! I don't use them now because my mom left her stoneware behind when they moved and it stands up to the kids better. I have service for 12, minus a saucer or three and a bowl or something. You might be able to see my butter cover in the china hutch picture. I love my dishes!

Holiday Home Party

Karla at Karla's Cottage is hosting a Holiday Homes blog tour. Take a look; there are dozens of wonderful holiday homes to visit.

First, I'm supposed to tell what I love about my holiday home. I think it's this: it's a time to pull out all the old ornaments and taste and feel and smell again all the good memories of Christmases past.

The angel atop the tiny tree below takes me back to my first year at Progressive Farmer magazine (where I was a writer). One of the women in the office, Marianna, was compiling a Current order (Remember Current? Is it still around?). I ordered a kit to make this angel. I remember Marianna as a good friend, a good woman. She passed away in the early 80s.

My sister Ramey painted the little light bulb Santa. A dear internet friend, Donna, made the lavender moon, a recent memory. The white ornament hanging from the chandelier was a gift to me at the wedding shower my quilting bee buddies gave me when Vann and I got married in 1994.

Hiding in the photos below are also ornaments made by my niece Jenny, by Mama, by my sister Joanne, and by many friends. The golden plastic Christmas tree is one of our family treasures. It came off a holiday bourbon bottle of my daddy's when my children were little. He stuck it to the dash board in his pickup truck, where it stayed until he died in 1977. My daddy, as we say in the south, was bad to drink. So this truly is a reminder of him, a reminder that makes us laugh a lot and cry a little.

Memories--that's what my holiday home means to me. Lots of memories, not all good, but every single one a treasure. Every one jealously guarded, tenderly caressed and cared for, because these memories are my life.

That is definitely my idea of proper Christmas decor! Not what's "in" or fashionable, etc., but meaning and memories. No wonder I'm so fond of you Susan. I'm just not able to come up with the energy to dig out my goodies and put them up this year. I've decided to meditate more on the original Christmas story this year. Maybe I'll have healed enough by next year to get into putting out my old treasures again. It would be nice to get beyond the zombie state again.

In the Bleak Midwinter

Rosetti_cA few of you have asked about the music playing when you open my blog. The piece you should hear first is "In the Bleak Midwinter." It's from a poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894). A fellow named Gustav T. Holst (1874-1934) wrote the haunting melody. I think it is the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. And the combination of the music and Rossetti's unbelievably excellent poem is amazing. Here are the words, for those who don't already know them. The last verse always, always makes me cry.

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breast full of milk, and a manger full of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give Him my heart.

This Is the Right Place; Now Is the Right Time

Stocking_2 Stocking_1Christmas is finally coming together at our house. As you can see, the all-important stockings are now hung. Come on, Santa Baby. Fill those socks with lots of love.

The house is also finally coming back together. Our Cleaning Sisters, Linda and Louise, came yesterday. Now everything is all squeaky clean and smells good. I think they enjoyed vacuuming the new carpet with the new vacuum cleaner that Vann bought. I know for sure that I enjoyed letting them vacuum it.

The Cleaning Sisters brought a goody basket for me and Vance (that's what they call him, we don't know why) and a stuffed elf for Sophie (whom they call "he"). Linda has been cleaning for us for about three years. She has a bunch of sisters, and each one has partnered with her at one time or another. Louise has been coming for about six months.

I must tell you that I didn't make those gorgeous knitted stockings. When I was a craft editor for Oxmoor House, I was in the right place at the right time many times for wonderful model and prop sales. That's where I got them.

Santa_1 Samta_2 Neither did I make these little Santa fellows. Another case of RPRT (right place, right time). I bid for and won them one year at the annual Holiday Auction held by our Castalia Literary Club, a local women's club here in Leeds.

Gotta go. My cup is empty, and I just heard Vann and Sophie returning downstairs from their morning walk. I'll drink my second cup of coffee and talk to Vann while he tries to read the paper and Sophie lounges on the back of the big chair. See, here she is.Sophie_on_chair
