Charmed, I'm Sure

AC1

The Autumn Charms quilt top is complete, with 121 tumblers cut from 121 different fabrics.

AC2

For a while I thought I would add some solid-colored pieces to the left and right edges to give me a straight edge to bind. But I've decided that I like the jagged edges, so I'm going to bind it as is--after I let Lena quilt it.

AC3

I'm planning to start the Halloween Wall hanging next--if I don't change my mind before I get back to sewing. Right now I have to the grocery store then pick up dinner for me and Jesse. I don't have to cook today. Jesse said he can live with take-out. Actually, I think he could live with take-out every day
if I'd let him.

A Revolting Development

14444845_10207300862175952_7995936378810520821_o (1)

I haven't really realized how much help Jesse has been to me since he moved in four years ago, how I have gradually come to depend on him for certain things. But, as of yesterday afternoon, I'm on my own again. No, he didn't move out. He turned his ankle on the basement stairs, tore a ligament, and broke his tibia. So now he's laid up for a few weeks.

No, I'm not heartless. I didn't even think of taking out the garbage, lugging the groceries upstairs, or any of the other heavy-lifting, stair-climbing duties that Jesse won't be able to do for a while until we had been to the critical care, got him taken care, brought him back home, and put him to bed. Strangely when I finally sat down and got a deep breath, the first thing I thought of was not the groceries or garbage or the normal house-keeping chores--it was THE LITTER BOX! That has been Jesse's duty since Taco and Bella came to live here. I think that's going to be the hardest thing for me to handle. I'll do all right with the scooping; I do that anyway when Jesse takes a weekend trip for kayaking, buggy riding, etc. But I have not done the actual cleaning. The box is big, and the litter is heavy. I'm going to need some prayers and positive energy sent my way.

But mainly, Jesse is going to need the prayers and positive energy more. He's worried about getting back to work, and he's in pain. BTW, apparently doctors don't give good pain pills anymore; the doctor gave Jesse a prescription for Aleve. He just said no and took one of my Tramadols from an old prescription I have.

Sure hate to hear this news. I can't handle the large litter boxes anymore myself and have several small ones for our cats. Usually the farmer will help me with them. I would think that that injury would require more than aleve and it is appropriate to ask for something stronger that is for sure. Will be lifting you two up from the farm.....all the best. xo Trudy

Wow! I'm so sorry for poor Jesse, and I'm sorry sorry sorry for YOU! Reminds me of a good reason why I don't have cats. At least you still have house-cleaners, don't you? My crew quit--Jennifer got remarried and lives too far away, and Dave finally got on disability and doesn't need my job any more.

I bring up the groceries one load at a time. First the cold and frozen stuff and vegetables, then the canned and dry stuff. Sometimes it takes 3 trips, with long stretches in between.

I wish Jesse wouldn't take unprescribed medicines. Make his doctor prescribe something more effective.

You should look at the very lightweight litter made from corn husks or some other source--works like a charm, weighs very little, absorbs well, has no smell, and no dust!

All good wishes to Jesse for less pain and a quick healing. I think it's great how the two of you care for each other. It shows how much love is in that home! Get well soon, Jesse!

Aleve for broken bones? that is terrible!!! I chuckled at the cat litter chore... I would feel the same way, I'm sure! Wishing you both well!

On 09/27/2016, Suze said ...

get a small trowel...and scoop out the used litter into a small bag..fill as many as you need to to be able to transport it to the trash can.Liners help with the clean-out part - I use heavy duty trash bags. Hopefully you HAVE replacement litter on hand - you can do the same thing in reverse to get enough to fill the litter pan. If not, get small bags of litter from the pet store - I use a clay from WalMart that is light enough for me to handle - I think the bag is around 7 pounds.
Good Luck and wishes for a speedy recovery to Jesse..sorry he is down for the count.

Sorry to hear.
Here's my method for dealing with heavy kitty litter bags (with 3 cats, I buy the big bags!) I "decant" litter into a smaller container (old coffee containers work well) by scooping it with a plastic cup. An old coffee can of fresh litter lives next to each litter box to refill as required. And yes, the new light weight litters are helpful. True, it takes a while but I don't break my back carrying anything too heavy.

On 10/01/2016, Pat said ...

So sorry about Jesse! And your "extra chores!" There is a light weight litter I think. I know regular stuff is so heavy. Both our cats are outside now but it was hard cleaning when Lucy was inside. Hope Jesse does well. My daughter broke her ankle 6 wks ago & is still in a boot. Take care. One day at a time...

Reading List Update

51rga8t5wrL._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_FYI, I just updated my 2016 reading list (left sidebar) with the last two books I read. The last one, Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane, I finished today. I have to say that it is one of the best books I've ever read in my life--and probably the very best mystery. I saw the movie a few days ago and enjoyed is so much that I wanted to read the book. And although the movie is excellent, the book is even better. If you like mysteries, I should think you would love this book.

The other book I read this month is The Light in the Ruins, by Chris Bohjalian, a WWII story that takes place in Italy. It too is very good with wonderful characters. This is the third of Bohjalian's books I have read, and I'm looking forward to reading more.

I can joyfully recommend either one of these books.

I just love your book recommendations and read many of the books that you highlight. I thought that I might return the favor. I would bet that you have already read Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry but if not I encourage you to add it to your list.

I thought Shutter Island (the book) was great. The movie not so great, as there were too many spoilers.

Autumn Charm

Charm1

I have amassed so much autumn themed fabrics that, after I finished the "Dancing Leaves" top I decided to make a charm quilt. For those who might not know, a traditional charm quilt is a one-patch quilt with every patch being cut from a different fabric. I chose the Tumbler patch for my charm quilt And to make things easier, I ordered a 6" acrylic Tumbler Template. Cutting the patches was easy as pie, using the template and my rotary cutter.

Charm2

My next goal is to get the charms sewn together. Then I'm going to get back to work on the Dollhouse Quilt, I think. I haven't yet made my Halloween Tree wallhanging, so it might get snuck into before the Dollhouse, but it shouldn't take long. I figure I'll still have gobs of autumn fabrics after I make the wallhanging. They seem to be multiplying.

Sorry I was not able to help with those tumblers----but looks like it wasn't hard with the template. We are still in the Black Hills with my sister. Temperatures have been in the 50's during the day. Wednesday we drive to Lynn's. It is 28 hours drive home from there. Should be at guild in October.

Jesse to the Rescue

All I had to do was ask. Jesse unplugged the cord that I use to charge my phone, detached it from the electrical plug-in, plugged one end into my phone and one into my Mac Book and there you go. Photos downloaded. So now I can show them to you. Young people are so smart

First, here are photos I took at our Bee meeting on Labor Day.

IMG_0616
Martha shows us a small star quilt while Doris looks on.

IMG_0618
Rita shows her pretty quilt that she made from fabrics from the Guild's free table.

IMG_0619
Doris with her beautiful string quilt.

IMG_0622
I don't remember who's behind this one, probably Doris, but isn't it a darling quilt?

IMG_0624
That looks like the top of Doris's head. I love this quilt, especially the soft colors.

IMG_0632
I think this was Doris too, showing us a pretty fish quilt.

IMG_0633
Gerry and her daughter Cyndi made this beauty, with help of some fabric donations from Sally. (Left to right: Martha, Quilt, Gerry, and Mary Grace)

Now for some Show-and-Tell from our Guild meeting last Monday.

I apologize for the poor quality of the photos. I'm going to go back to taking my Nikon to quilt meetings and stop depending on my iPhone. I just cannot get a good photo with the phone. None of these seems to be in focus.

I didn't remember the names of the quilters for most of these pieces, so I didn't credit any of them. Suffice to say that they were all made by extremely talented quilters.

Pillowcase Report

Pillowcases

I have finished five pillowcases for Children's Hospital this week. So if I don't even get another one made before October guild meeting, that will be all right. Just think. If I could make five every month, by the end of the year, I will have turned in 60 pillowcases. That's still a very soft deadline though. Who knows how many down days I might have during the year? But I am totally pleased with the work I've done this week.

Well Pooh! Just Pooh!

When I find the doo-lolly that lets me download photos on my iPhone to my computer, I will share those photos from bee and guild. Meanwhile, I have neither the will nor the time to email the things one at a time to myself so that I can download them through my email, which seems to be the only way I can figure out to get them mailed. If I attach more than one, my email balks and won't send.

So here's one that I did email to myself because I want to send it to my niece to show to her husband, who is a skateboard nut. The rest will have to wait. Because right now, I'm going to make another pillowcase--it will be my third one.

IMG_0670

And it's sideways, but I can't get it to post any other way. On my computer, it looks right, but when I post it here, it's sideways. I just might go back to bed.

One of my sons went through a skateboard phase. As I recall, it cost more than his bicycle. That phase also required an unusual haircut for his beautiful towhead hair, and clothes with skeleton and other dark "things" on them. We all survived, and the skateboard is somewhere in our garage I guess. The skateboard quilt is certainly colorful and really caught my attention as well. Thanks for the view.

Pillowcase Project

PC1

Birmingham Quilters Guild is taking part in a service project to make fun pillowcase for the kids being treated at Children's Hospital in Birmingham. So after our guild meeting yesterday, I went by Hobby Lobby and picked out some novelty prints to make some pillowcases. And I have some prints in my stash too that will work for this. I just have to dig them out. That's my first pillowcase in the photo above. I'm using the Burrito Pillowcase technique, which is fast, easy, and makes a really nice pillowcase with no raw seams.

PC2

I love making projects with novelty prints in which the prints don't have to be chopped up into small pieces, like for quilts. These pillowcases give the fabrics a chance to really show off.  Don't you just love this one with the kitty cats doing a little bird watching?

PC3Here are some more pillowcase fabrics.

At first I thought I would set myself a goal of making a certain number of pillowcases by the end of the guild year. But then I thought, who needs the pressure. So I'm just going to make as many as I can, hoping for at least 25 by next September.

I have lots of photos to eventually post from Quilt Bee meeting last week and Quilters Guild meeting yesterday. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm Ready for Some Football

Back

I didn't have enough of any one fabric suitable to make a backing for "Dancing Leaves," so I stitched several fabrics together from my stash. The second one from the top and the last one on bottom are the fabrics that I used in the sashing and borders. So now, all is ready to go to Lena.

This morning, I made pumpkin bars for a going-away coffee we're having for our pastor and his family tomorrow after church. We also get to meet their new baby, James's little sister Lucy, who was born less than a month ago. we're going to miss this young family.

But now--well in an hour or so, I'm going to watch the Alabama Crimson Tide play Western Kentucky at Bryant-Denny is Tuscaloosa. I hope the results are even half as good as those last week, when the Tide beat USC, 52-6, or something like that.

Dancing Leaves

Dancing Leaves

That's what I have decided to call my new autumn quilt. I finished the top this morning, sewing on the last two border strips. Now all I have to do is construct a backing, take it to the quilter, and bind it when it gets home. I love it.

I've had a busy week, filled with club meetings and other stuff. I have photos from my quilting bee meeting on Monday, which I will post in a day or two.

But right now, I'm stoked to do some more quiltmaking while my back isn't complaining.

Sashing

Sashing

I got the sashing strips cut and the rows sashed together. All that's left to cut and sew are the border strips. But I think that's about enough sitting and sewing for me today. My back is already whimpering; I sure don't want it to start screaming. So the doggies, kitties, and I are going to turn all our equipment off, turn out the lights, close the door, and go downstairs for some reading. I expect the furbies will actually do more napping than reading. And who knows? Maybe I will too.

Piece Borders

PBs

This quilt has five borders, as well as vertical sashing between the three rows of leaves. Lots of border cutting and sewing--not my favorite part of quiltmaking. I don't like cutting long strips of cloth. The extra care it takes to get them cut straight (with no Vs) and exactly matching the sides of the top is a bit stressful to me.

But I do like cutting and sewing all the different prints in scrap quilts (which is mostly all I make), so the pieced border part of this quilt was lots of fun, and it went really fast. The pieced borders will lie between two solid borders.

So now I have to cut 16 solid border strips and six sashing strips. Then I can join it all together. But not this afternoon. I sewed much too long yesterday and got my back hurting so badly I couldn't straighten up. I cooked supper all bent over like an old Granny Grunch.

So I'm going to spend this afternoon enjoying my most recent reading experience, Snowbound by Blake Crouch (I'm over halfway finished and still we have seen not one flake of snow--but we are in Alaska now, so maybe it's on its way).

Happy weekend, everyone. And happy Labor Day, in case I don't get back to my blog before Monday.

Living life as one where there was a pair is a challenge every day, every year. You're carrying it off well.
