Sickness Sucks

Swine-flu-government-manufacturedI don't know if it's swine flu or bird flu or just plain old people flu, but folks, I got it. I have been sooooo sick. And although I think I'm improving now, I have a long way to go. The fever seems to have broken, though, which was one of the scariest things. I NEVER have a fever.

Not only is it the holidays, but my doctor is in the process of moving his office. I haven't been able to get in touch with him or his office the entire time. So I deferred to Mayo Clinic's website, which told me that if I had no other life threatening conditions and wasn't pregnant, it was not necessary to see a doctor for flu. I should just treat myself with a pain/fever reducer, bed rest, and lots of fluids. So that's what I've been doing.

I've had plenty of company. Skipper, Sophie, and Taco have been my constant bed companions. Bella says she prefers to stay away from sick folks.

I'm so sorry that I haven't even checked in to let you know that I'm at least alive. But the trip up the stairs to the computer has seemed overwhelming, and I can't post from my iPad for some reason.

I'll try to check by in in a day or two. Since I've been sick now for almost a week, I expect to really be coming around any day now.

Happy Weekend, everyone.

So sorry you're sick but glad you're feeling a little better. We had the stomach flu and I don't think I've ever been that sick in all my 62 years of being on this planet!! Two ounces of GatorAde every hour was what I was told to do. It keeps your electrolytes in balance. it did help some. Just keep doing what you're doing and hurry up and feel better. We've got a brand new year to ring in next week. Hope this next one is a lot nicer than the last one was for us. Blessings to you and yours.

Oh, my lil' Susan! Even SICK you utilize humor & that just makes me love you MORE! I want you to continue resting & make Jesse be your SLAVE so you don't have to do ANYTHING that isn't absolutely necessary.(You hear me, Jesse?) Get better sooooon!!!

Really sorry to hear that you are sick. We had a news story on the Tee Vee the other day saying that in certain parts of Canada the ER is packed with people suffering from the flu. You are doing the right thing, but remember, if it goes on overly long - get your heiny to the doctor. For Sandy - I had a stomach flu like that once - thought I was going to die. My kids came back from Florida and by the time they hit the airport here, all five of them had it, we had to pick them up and by the time we got home, we had it then we were too sick to walk Roscoe and my youngest son came and by the time he got home he had it. Too funny how it spreads so easily. They say the flu shot isn't doing any good this year as it is a different type that is going around. Happy New Year to you all.

Well, I'm happy to hear that you are on the tail end of the flu, but am sorry that you are sick. Your furry companions are a real comfort though.

Thank you for the update. We were all wondering, of course. I would still get to a doctor as soon as you can. May next year be kinder to your body.

Susan, please take good care & don't let your flu get ahead of you. As others mentioned DO see the doctor if you aren't really better soon! What a terrible way to spend the holidays! Feel better fast!

On 12/29/2012, Linda said ...

Yes we were all wondering, but don't apologize for not checking in. Just take care and don't overdo or try to get up too quickly. So glad your pet doctors are in attendance - they truly are a comfort. And I defer to Mayo Clinic website and WebMD quite often. ;)

Bother and bummer, my friend! I hope you didn't catch it from me since I got sick 12/8 and was down and out for more than a week. The fatigue hangs on after the fever leaves if you have what I had.

Hope you have plenty of chicken soup and hot tea. We had three dishwasher loads that had only bowls and mugs in them since DH was also sick.

Take good care of you and be well soon!

Hugs!

What a rotton way to spend the Holidays. At least your loyal beasts are keeping you company & (hopefully) meditating the flu away. Have the Nephew load you up with books and DVD's so that when you should be still resting in bed, but feel compelled to rush back to reality, you have something to distract you in the last couple of days with this flu. All the Holiday socializing is a perfect way to share the germs unfortunately. What is Bella's excuse for not staying by your side? Stay Clam & Carry On (in bed, of course) and I hope you are past the worst of it. I hope that 2013 will be an exceptionally good year for you - you deserve it.

The flu is here in Kansas for sure. My family has been bitten by the bug. If you catch it early enough the Dr. puts you on Tamaflu and that seems to snap you out of it real fast. Fever, aches, vomiting...for 3-4 days. Just watch your chest congestion. It can go into pneumonia real quick.
It is New Years Eve and we are staying in. I think your idea of working on a puzzle is a great one. I will go dig through my cabinet....

Flexible Christmas

Bella & Quilts 2

Bella & Quilts
"Do you mind? I'm taking a bath here."

In light of the expected severe weather, Andy, Jesse, and I decided it would indeed to be wise to shelter in place on Christmas Day. So we aren't going out. Instead, we'll stay here, have chicken and dumplings, maybe watch a movie or work a puzzle. I have a new Christmas puzzle with cats I've been saving for the season.

Tomorrow night, Christmas Eve, the fam is coming (as I think I've said) and we're going to chow down on barbeque and brunswick stew and trimmings. The meat is already simmering in the crock pot for the stew.

Meanwhile, here's how winter is looking around about The Yellow House.

Good decision about staying home and safe! Will Andy spend Christmas Eve night at your house so it will be like a house party or will she need to get home to care for critters?

Love the photos of Bella and your Santa family quilt.

Interesting tree photos, too.

I'm still making up for time lost to the flu and really need an extra week before Christmas. Will you work with me on that? Perhaps I've waited too late to wish for more time ...

Think I'm too tired to sew but perhaps I can pin the last seam on the 2nd SC wall quilt and hand stitch the rest of the binding on SC#1.

Please keep DS1 and his sweetie in your prayers as they drive from north GA here on Christmas Eve evening. It's his 33rd birthday, too.

Wishing you and all a Merry Christmas!

Hugs!

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Tornado Season

Soph & Taco B:W jpeg Friendship: The best gift of all

Still feeling pretty spiffy today--except for the temperature thing. Oh, no, I don't have a temperature. But I'm so hot. I feel like it's summer and the air conditioner has gone out. I sweat so much. I haven't been totally dry since I don't know when. Can a person mildew?

So, it's almost Christmas, huh? Am I ready? Are you kidding? I'm just glad I have a somewhat understanding family.

We're having soup night here on Christmas Eve with all the family coming over. So I have to go to the grocery store today to get fixings. I also have an appointment for a hair cut this afternoon. So it's going to be a busy day.

My plan was for me, Jesse, and Andy to go to a movie on Christmas Day ("The Hobbit") and then go by Max's Deli and pick up something scrumptious to bring home for dinner. But now we're being told that Christmas Day is going to bring stormy weather and tornadoes our way. I'm not sure I still want to go out if it's stormy. Maybe pick up a small ham and cook that on Christmas. And save "The Hobbit" for another day.

Yhst-132146841436290_2242_299046035Before I go, I'd like to give you this bit of information that I learned from quilter Mark Lapinski. If you've been wondering what you can do to help the children in Newtown, Connecticut to recover from the horror they experienced last week, here's Mark's idea. Make a pair of bright, cheery pillowcases to send them.

Becky at Quliter's Corner quilt shop in New Milford, Connecticut is collecting pillowcases for the children at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She is trying to collect around 600. Pillowcases can be mailed to her at Quilters Corner, 312 Danbury Rd, New Milford, CT. 06776.

If you haven't got into the pillowcase-making craze yet, here's a link for a very quick and easy method that turns out beautifully.

Cute pose with the furry kids!

Thanks for the idea about pillow cases and the link to the tutorial.

I, too, had an errand day yesterday and today. I am SO out of spoons but need to gather whatever gumption or .... it takes so I can sew SC2 together, just a lot of pinning and three seams. No border so it should be easy pleasy. I hope.

Still haven't wrapped gifts or baked a thing either. Oh, and haven't dusted or vacuumed.

May the bad weather not materialize anywhere.

Hugs!

Now I can't leave without telling you how much I love seeing the pictures of these two furry kids. It seems as though they are almost inseparable now...how wonderful and adorable is that? Thanks for putting a big smile on my face and a bunch of little paw prints all over my heart before I make myself move from the recliner to my bed. Big Hugs...

Received your wonderful, sweet card & I LOVE it! Thank you (and all the sweet fur-babies!) I'm sneaking five minutes (company is showering, etc. right now) to say hello and check in! TAKE IT EASY, and be GOOD to yourself. There are no Christmas 'rules'! We are expecting the same storm on Tuesday morning that you will get in the afternoon. Ugh, ugh, ugh! I'm making 'Holiday Soup' for our meal. Don't laugh, but it's turkey, green beans, a small amount of cranberry sauce, a small amount of stuffing (which I know from experience will melt into the soup & just add taste) & turkey - all leftovers I froze from Thanksgiving. Those will go in a big pot with chicken broth, water, 2 cans of hominy because we LOVE it, carrots, celery, & onions till the veggies are cooked and everything 'meshes'. It SOUNDS odd, but it's one of our favotites! See? No Christmas rules! Come on over! There'll be PLENTY and there's ALWAYS room at my table! LOVE YOU BUNCHES!!!

A little late, but here's my Dollhouse Quilt-along progress report for December. Just finished fusing the pieces this afternoon. No stitching or details yet. Next I'll work on the Laundry Room or Master Bedroom.

Train Wreck

Train-wreck-300x216

That's me. My health is going from bad to worse quickly. Only five days until Christmas Soup Night at the Yellow House, and I'm completely derailed. I can't even get my thoughts organized, much less my house, my shopping list, my plans to move forward.

The pain thing won't let up, even for a day. And then last night I suffered an allergy attack the likes of which I don't think I've ever experienced. It came on suddenly with coughing and wheezing and copious amounts of phlegm being produced. At its height, I thought I might choke into unconsciousness. It even scared Jesse. He asked me straight out did I think I was going to die.

I took Benadryl, but even so, it took about an hour to get the attack under control. This morning, my throat and nasal passages itch and are scratchy, I'm sneezing and coughing (though nothing like the attack), my eyes are watering, I hurt worse than ever (probably from all the coughing), my thinking and doing are sluggish, I'm dizzy headed, and I have precious little strength or stamina. Me and my plans for the holidays are completely derailed for now. I can only hope that things improve in the next few days.

So for now, I'm going to take a hot bath, have a cup of tea, and return to bed, perhaps with my door closed so that those little allergens (Skipper, Taco, and Bella) have to stay out. I'm reminded why we chose a schnoodle when we got Sophie: nonallergenic.

Peace, y'all.

Am playing catch-up after our long day of travel on Thursday to fetch DS2 home for the holidays.

I am SO sorry you're so sick. Forgive me for wondering if this is the start of the flu like DH and I are getting over instead of an allergy attack. Ours lasted for a week with the runniest nose I've ever had, fever, utter fatigue, watery eyes like I was crying (never before for this, too), monumental sneezes, and coughing like my toenails would come up next. We're still coughing, sneezing, and get tired fast. Since Benadryl didn't help much, perhaps it wasn't just allergies.

Hope you feel much better soon!

Healing hugs!

New Dollhouse Block from Laura

Bedroom 1002 Grannies Room

"This is my Grannies room," says Dollhouse Quiltalonger Laura. "I made the bed in such a way that my dollies can actually slip into it. My Grandpa called it Granny's 'Queen' bed because it was quite grand, enamel with carving and big (for those days--no king size yet). Besides, this was where the 'Queen of this house sleeps,' he explained."

I'll be emailing out the next block in the Dollhouse Quilt soon. Watch for it.

The Shirt Off His Back

Last night, the critters and I took our places on the couch and watched a movie, "American Gangster." I had seen that movie several times already; but I like gangster movies, and I love Denzel. While I watched, I disassembled a couple of Vann's shirts that I have been saving to make a special quilt. A couple of months after his passing, I donated Vann's clothes, tons of them, to a shelter for homeless men. But knowing that someday I'd want to do this, I kept out a few shirts, all 100% cotton, which is mostly what Vann wore.

Linda L.'s quilt from December guild meeting (below)...

G12

...and the Seven-Shirt quilt pattern (below) from Life's a Stitch blog...

HPIM1570

...spurred me on to get started.

Shirts

I got two shirts taken apart. I have several more to go. I haven't decided what design I'll use. I really like the 7-quilt Nine Patch and Snowball design, so that might be the one.

Below are a couple more men's shirt quilts that I found online.

QuiltA-760852

I'm having a really trying day today, pain-wise. I was awake most of last night. It's the all-over kind that seems to be concentrated in my back and hips but then radiates out to all parts of my body.

It's dark and raining, and we have a forecast for severe storms this evening. So I'm sure a lot of my pain is weather related. So I think I'll take the critters and crawl into bed to weather the storm.

Tomorrow I'll be showing you Laura's latest Dollhouse quilt block, the bedroom at her grandma's house. You'll want to see it. If anyone else has dollhouse progress, send me a photo.

Sorry the rainy weather has made you ache! Hope you feel lots better soon. How about some Aleve or Percogesic to help take the edge off?

The rain finally arrived here a little while ago but I managed to get our old tree, metal fatigue and all into the house along with boxes of ornaments and a box of lights. I took the lights off last years as we planned to get a new tree thie year. The flu nixed that plan. At the moment, I wonder if shopping for a new tree would have taken less energy than putting this tree back together again and putting many strings of multicolored lights back on it. I say this after "fluffing" the branches and putting only the first string of lights on.

I like Linda L's shirt quilt the most of those pictured as it just looks friendlier and more like a warm welcome home to me. The other quilts are each pretty, but seem to be more about the pattern than the beloved fabrics. There is my 2 cents worth!

Back to that nearly bare tree.

Hugs!

Don't THINK he'll listen, but I BELIEVE in Santa so I have to continue hoping. As for your idea to do a quilt from Vann's shirts, I thing that's awesome! My friend Vivian makes teddy bears for women whose hubbies have passed away, and she uses their clothing. Both are lovely ways to make the pieces into something that is HAPPY and can be cuddled! LOVE YOU, my sweet friend!

Sorry your "pains" are flaring up. Hope you get to feeling better.
I have been making memory quilts for a lady, her husband passed away suddenly this past spring. She wanted 10 of them for Christmas presents to give to their children. I met up with her Thanksgiving weekend to pick the clothing up. Yeah, I know, crazy to think I could get 10 done in a month. I do have all of them pieced but quilting has slowed me down. I had a dream or should say a vision from God on how to quilt them and God should have realized how slow I am. LOL Anyway they are beautiful, (if I can say so), I'll have to send you a picture, but I wished I have of seen Linda's layout before I started. I really like that one. I have been contacted by another women for 4 memory quilts so I might see if she has enough shirts to make some like Linda's.
Thank you for sharing and the inspiration.

If I don't talk to you again, I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

Hi Susan -
It's your quilting buddy from southeast Pennsylvania. Love the shirt memory quilt idea. Oh, if only I had thought of this just after my Dad's passing. I look at this and think what a comfort that would be to me now. But sadly I didn't think of it and we donated all his clothes. When you get yours done and you can have it close to you I know this will bring you much comfort too. Sorry to hear you couldn't sleep & aren't feeling well. I often can't sleep also but mine is usually due to racing thoughts that I can't shut off and sometimes I do fall asleep but then I keep waking up from some weird re-occuring dream like a broken record in my head. I hate when that happens. I hope you are feeling better soon and that the weather won't be too severe tonight. My big sister lives in St. Pete's FL and I worry about her when the weather gets real bad down yonder.
Sending you blessings,
Linda

She Found It

Bella:TreeWell, Bella found the tiny little white tree. I caught her on top of the armoire yesterday, eating it. So no tree of any kind. But we have Christmas quilts that will stand in for trees. And I strung lights on my fireplace screen. So we are officially decorated.

I'm going to get me one of those squirt bottles, like some of you have recommended, when I go to the store today.

I had to make a quick run to the vet clinic yesterday afternoon. Skipper tore his dew claw somehow. I found him bleeding all over the carpet and licking his foot. I couldn't get the bleeding to stop and couldn't get him still enough to find out how much damage was done. So I quickly wrapped his foot the best I could in a bandage, put him in he car, and off we went.

After giving Mr. Skipper an examination, the vet assured me that all would be well. The bleeding had stopped. She trimmed his nails, told me to watch him, and sent us on our way.

On the way to the vet's office, I have to pass our elementary school. I was curious to see all the children and teachers outside, arranged in orderly lines. It was not time for school to be out, so I wondered if it was a fire drill.

But when I got a little way on up the street, I was met by what appeared to be every emergency vehicle in Leeds: fire trucks, ambulances, the works. But whatever the situation, it must have not been too bad. When we came back by the school, less than an hour later, there was no sign of trouble. Kids and teachers were back inside. No emergency vehicles in evidence.

But the this morning I hear on the tv news, that there has been a shooting at an elementary school near Danbury, Connecticut. An elementary school. And I think, that could have been our school. That's the second public shooting in two weeks. Will it ever end? Or will it just get worse?

Praying for everyone connected with Sandy Hook Elementary shooting: students, parents, teachers, the injured, police and emergency responders, and the shooter's family.

It's so sad that in today's world people can't even send their precious little children to school without fear. Every time we hear of this kind of thing happening I think we all wonder when will it stop??? I remember a passage in the Bible that says that in the last days, men's hearts will fail them for fear and it seems that day is here. Such a sad day for everyone. On a lighter note, I read on the internet that the best way to stop a cat from jumping up on furniture is to lay a clear piece of packaging tape sticky side up on your tables etc and when they jump up there it sticks to their feet and fur and scares them and it breaks them from jumping. Haven't tried it but it sounds like a good, harmless way to solve the problem. Have a blessed weekend Susan.

Love your fireplace!

Is the white tree a feather tree? If so, that's the allure for Bella and she would probably ignore a bottle brush tree.

The tragedy is Connecticut is another needless heartbreak for those affected directly and all others around the world. My prayers are with all, including the brother of the shooter who also lost his parents.

We need a group hug.

Minimalism

Th5

That's our Christmas tree, way up there on top of the tv armoire, with nary a light or bauble on it. And there's a reason for this.

I started out on Tuesday with high hopes of getting the Yellow House all gussied up for the holidays. I already knew I wasn't going to put up the big tree. Number One: The cats. Number Two: I am just not up to the hassle of putting up a big tree, decorating it, undecorating it, and putting it back away--even with Jesse's help.

So I got out my little 3-ft. tree and plugged it in. Half the lights wouldn't light. I found the instructions in the box, which led me to believe if I would replace the fuses, everything would be calm and bright. I found the fuses, not in the box, and replaced the old ones. The same half of the lights didn't work. Since a burned out bulb is not supposed to cause widespread light failure with this tree, I didn't opt to go down the string, replacing each light find a bad one. Well, actually, I did try that with one. I completely tore one bulb to pieces trying to remove it. So, I gave up on that tree.

Next, I got out my little bitty white tree that I like to decorate with all my cardinals that I have collected. I was going to place it here, in front of my new Christmas quilt, "Family Portrait," in the foyer.

Th2

I set the little tree up, a very easy operation, even with my hands. Then I turned and stepped into the living room to retrieve my box of cardinal ornaments. I was gone maybe ten seconds. When I got back, Miss Bella was eating the white tree. Scrap that plan.

I looked around all over the house to find a place to put my cardinal tree that was kitty proof. The top of the armoire was the best I could do. So far, I haven't caught them up there, but who knows? I might put a little string of lights on it so that it doesn't look so bare.

I have set out a few other little do-dads, but not much. Cats and hall decking just don't go well together, in my opinion. Here's a look at what I've managed.

Th3
A little softie tree that my friend Cindy M., made for bee members last year. Actually, I found it in the floor this morning.

Th4
Cross-stitched greeting. I don't think they can reach this--maybe.

Th6
For the past 15 years or so, this quilt has hung in my foyer at Christmastime. I've retired it to the dining room to make room for "Family Portrait."

Th7
What a difference a red ribbon makes.

Th8
My thrift store M.E. needlepoint pillow

Th9
This little Santa container actually hangs in my kitchen year-round to remind me of a special friend who made it.

Th1
Cat in a basket, temporary decoration

My big stuffed Bentley Bear is sitting on the front porch, I have a wreath on the door and a swag on the mailbox--and that's it, so far, for decorating at The Yellow House. All cat-proof ideas for Christmas decor will be considered.

I feel your pain! I have 7 cats so my decorating has been reduced to a red bow on my lightpost outside and our stocking hung on the mantle. Your Family Portrait quilt is beautiful and I know you're enjoying it. Hope your day is a good one.

One of my cats, Pumpkin, mostly leaves the holiday "greenery" alone after pulling the big tree down on top of himself a couple of years ago. The other, Smokey Joe, LOVES fake greenery and is subjected to being squirted when he nibbles on the tree/garland/what-have-you. Oddly enough, now that I have decorations on my small tree, he's mostly leaving it alone. Yeah, I've toned down the decorations since the boys came to live with me. Nothing like cats to help you espouse the minimalist aesthetic.

On 12/13/2012, Linda said ...

Love your decorations and quilts! With my kitten at 8 months old, I was nervous about the tree. As soon as I put it up, she was nosing around it. She has already broken 2 glass ornaments, so I put the vacuum sweeper next to the tree - she is terrified of it - so if I catch her around the tree I simply turn it on and she races out of the room. It has helped. The things we do to accommodate our animals!

During the 11 year lifetime of our cat "Fireball" the Christmas tree (artificial) didn't fare well --- he would climb it and sit in it. Branches would get twisted every which way. Tipped over many times too. He would "steal" Baby Jesus from the top of the pie cupboard; only him. The other figures he didn't take. Fireball was a jumper so no matter how high something was he could get at it. Keeping breakables packed away seemed to work the best.

Cat in a basket! What a charming idea!

On 12/13/2012, Barbara Anne said ...

Perhaps it's because our 2 cats prefer live greenery, they seem not to give a fig about silk greenery or an artificial tree, no matter what is hanging from the branches. They show mild interest, then distain. This year might be different for some reason, but we've been okay for the last 7 Christmases. Fingers crossed!

Of course, I cannot have any live plant indoors because Tom, the younger cat, regards living greenery as his personal salad.

Our dearly depart Bassett Hound, Daisy, loved the artificial Christmas tree and would instantly plant herself under its lower branches in utter bliss.

Love the Christmas quilts!

Hugs!

Use a squirt bottle filled with water. It does wonders. Not only for the tree, but anywhere you find them being naughty. Or just the general throwing water on them. I've tossed a half glass of water at a cat before. Eventually, you can get to the point of making the squirt bottle noise with your mouth and they will scamper out of the room. It is tough, but you have to persevere this first year. Then it's easier after that. I have never adjusted my decorating to my animals, I just work at training them. It's never easy, but it can be done.

Tree or no, The house looks like Christmas to me. So warm and inviting.

On 12/17/2012, Ellen in Oregon said ...

We used to use water guns when I was a kid to discourage the cats from scratching furniture (more fun than a squirt bottle when your 10 yrs. old). Some times it would work and sometimes the cat just thought you were nuts. How did Bella manage to reach the top of the Amoire? Does she fly? A friend says she would lay crumpled pieces of alumimum foil were she didn/t want the cat to go and the texture. reflection and noise would scare them away. Sound great as long as you don't mind having long pieces of Reynolds Wrap laying all over your house! You house look lovely & very festive despite the problems. The only thing missing is a red collar on Bella & Taco. I hope Skipper's foot heals quickly.

A Joyful Noise

I'm going to back up to Sunday and tell you about the annual Christmas Cantata at my church, Leeds First United Methodist.

Cantata5Our children's bell choir kicked things off with an outstanding performance.

Cantata6
Watching Miss Stephanie turn the cards

Cantata1
Our choir is small, but they make a big sound.

Cantata2
The quilted Christmas banners that I made several years ago were in place.

Cantata3
A Midnight Clear

Cantata4
Away in a Manger

After the performance, we adjourned to the Family Life Center across the street, where we found steaming pots of homemade chili and soups waiting for us. What a great Sunday.

***

G8Some of you asked the name of Viginia's quilt block. It's called Carpenter's Square, and if  you follow the link, you'll find a pattern for it.

Some others asked about ordering my guild's cookbook. I don't know the exact publication date, but I do know that we're counting on having copies for sale at our quilt show in June. I will be sure to let everyone know when the book is available.

Thanks for all your comments.

Happy 12-12-12, everyone.

What glorious banners you created to grace your church for the holiday season!! Applause, applause!!

I'm glad you felt well enough to go to the beautiful Christmas program and the church family chili dinner thereafter. Thank you for giving us a glimpse.

Am feeling like I've been hit by a truck today but want to get to work full steam to finish those Shade Cascade wall hanging. Time is short.

Hugs!

Wow Susan, you did such a beautiful job on those banners. You should be very proud to see them hanging there every Christmas. Chili and soup sounds pretty good around here today. It's cold!!! Only in the 40's so tonight we're having a good ole hot bowl of oyster stew. Have a great day.

Christmas Clothesline

Through a driving rainstorm I drove. Almost an hour it took me to get to guild meeting in Homewood yesterday morning. (Why am I writing like Yoda?) But I got there. Everyone was all in a dither, afraid I had wrecked on the interstate in the storm and the traffic. But actually, I'd just misjudged how long it would take. Also I had meeting time off by 30 minutes. So you see, my day started out on a pretty negative note. But it got better.

Guild meeting was wonderful. The clothesline show-and-tell was such fun, the program by our own Cyndi W., in which she showed us the Japanese method (the name of which escapes me) of wrapping gifts and items in fabric was informative, and the food was yumsome! Below are pictures shot in our very crowded meeting room.

G1
Christmas Block-of-the-Month. We had 66 blocks turned in. Three members won 22 blocks each. I'm looking forward to seeing some pretty wonderful quilts made from these.

G2
Beatrice won her other guild's donation quilt. That's Beatrice on the left, walking away. Sorry I didn't make it in time to get of photo of her standing in front of her quilt.

G3
Our clotheslines were hanging heavy this time...

G6
...as you can see.

G4
A quilt made with some of our October Blocks-of-the-Month, "Chainsaw"

G7
You might catch a glimpse of a familiar quilt, "Family Portrait" in the center.

G8
Wish I could have got a better shot of Virginia's beautiful quilt for her BIL, I believe she said. But this was the best angle I could come up with.

G9
Our Judy R.'s larger quilt, "Judy in the Sky With Diamonds," won an AQS first-place ribbon, and they asked her to create a pattern for a smaller version for their magazine. These are small quilts that Judy created from that pattern.

G10
One of Peggy Rhodes's beautiful hexie quilts. This quilt appears in
Quick & Easy Hexie Quilts by Peggy Rhodes and Judy Wood, due out in March. I have already pre-ordered my copy.

G11
One of Virginia's beautiful Stack-and-Whack quilt.

G12
Linda L. used some of her late husbands shirts to make this beautiful quilt. When I saw it, a light bulb immediately went off in my head. Look for a quilt from some of Vann's shirts soon, I hope.

G13
A military memory quilt

G14
Each one of the blocks in this amazing quilt took five hours to machine embroider.

G15
Made for a new grandchild

G16
Another Christmas beauty

G17
I love this Santa.

G18
Jittery geese in flight?

G19
At last it was time to sample all the tables full of wonderful dishes that board members had made from the recipes of our upcoming Birmingham Quilters Guild Cookbook. I made my Fresh Apple Cake.

Great pictures! I would love to learn to quilt - my husband bought me a sewing machine a few years ago...and I haven't the faintest idea how to make it run :-)....it came with a DVD to watch and I was overwhelmed! When does the cookbook come out? Can blog readers order it??
Merry Christmas!

What a happy DAY for me! I got to 'feast' on all these beautiful quilts, AND I just heard my great granddaughter is only minutes away from making her appearance in the world! Not to MENTION it's actually COLD here! Ahhhh ... life is GOOD!

What glorious eye candy you've given us in these wonderful photos of amazing quilts!!!! Wow!!!!

Congrats to Beatrice for winning such a delightful floral quilt!

I think I'd have been either cross-eyed, nuts, or both by the time I'd made Virginia's astonishingly intricate quilt. Wonder what the name of that block (or pattern) is??

Methinks the setting used for the dear shirt fabrics quilt would be perfect for my multitude of Christmas fabric squares.

Helen, get a copy of Piecing the Piece-o-Cake Way to teach good and easy techinques for getting started with quilt-making. It is SO much easier than it looks and it's great fun. I hope the place where your sweet hubby got your sewing machine offers classes you could take to learn to master the machine. Guess you've got snow already so it might be difficult to get to class.

Hugs!

Your Guild is packed with talent from what you show us each month! Monday must have been a bad day all around for getting to Guild meetings! It was our Christmas potluck supper and three members ended up not attending because the car they were riding in hit ice on the road sending them into a ditch! All are fine--wearing seat belts--and grateful it wasn't any worse. They were missed at the party but we were also thankful it wasn't any worse!

I, too, was wondering what the quilt pattern was that Virginia used. Also, how many people are in your guild? Your group is really active, both in making quilts and bringing food. Have a wonderful Christmas - I love to read your blog and look forward to it. Thanks!

As usual, I hope I remember everything I want to say after looking through your post! The good thing is that I can scroll up and see it intact!
1) I was working on my reader/bookmarks, etc. When I went to work on your bookmark, the description was so wonderfully filled in by you. That's a nice feature when whatever it is we do in the background of our blogs gives the bookmark/favorite a description. Thank you.
2) I loved all of the quilts, oh, wait
2) I cracked up about talking like Yoda. That was great.
3) I loved all of the quilts
4) I fell in love with the shirt quilt, something just grabbed my eyes and then I found out what it's made with.
5) You should do that (if my opinion counts).
6) I scrolled back up to check on something and the same shirt quilt caught my eye again.
7) Virginia's quilt - wow is it pieces or did she quilt the fabric?
8) Chainsaw? Circular saw? Blades. Made me look at the quilt differently.
9) Someone showed me, with a shawl, how the Japanese carry their stuff - like a purse. I'd be interested in the other wrappings. I have a blogger Missionary friend in Japan. Maybe I'll also check with her.
10) Finally - told ya I had a lot to say! ;)
Always enjoy your header and posts when I get to stop by. Thank you!
