Those Treasures I Mentioned

I promised to show my thrift store finds that I scored last week on my way to the doctor's office. I had left home early, so I had time to stop at one of our Leeds thrift stores that I hadn't visited in a while. I'm glad I did. I found three beauties.

Plates

As soon as I saw these cheery plates, I could picture them in the little white hutch in my office. And I was right. I love them there.

Pitcher1

And this blue pitcher is perfect for my blue bedroom. When I have guests, I can fill it with pretty white flowers for my visitors to enjoy.

6a00d8341cbb0053ef0147e2a34b23970b-400wi Some of you asked where you could get one of the cute quilter's pins that I bought from a guild friend a couple of weeks ago. I finally have her e-mail address. So if you will e-mail me at suscleve@aol.com if you're interested, I'll send you her address so you can get in touch with her. Her name is Debbie.

I have so much on my to-do list, I don't know where to begin. The laundry alone could keep me busy all week I think. So I guess I best get to getting. Things are blooming and my spring allergies have followed right along on the heels of that cold I had. So I'm coughing and sneezing and blowing the old honker still. What I'd really like to do is crawl into bed with my book, but I won't. I'll get to getting. Bye for now.

Susan, I love the cherry plates you found. I found one in the thrift store in Pell City last summer. It's a Hallmark plate. I have cherries in my craft room and it all started with Mary Engelbriet fabric. From there I was hooked.
I hope the storms are not to bad today. Stay safe. Let's get started on our to-do list, seems we never get caught up. Have a blessed day.

Treasures, indeed!! I love the cheery cherry plates you found and that sweet blue pitcher is so very charming. Your blue bedroom is so pretty and is arranged in a welcoming and lovely manner. Well done!

Tomorrow AMIL go see one of her doctors and will pop into a neighboring quilt shop before coming home. Wednesday another medical appt. will take us near a new-to-us consignment shop and we're going there. I am so excited!!

Remember the best way to multi-task is to put a load in the washer, a load in the dryer, and take a nap!! Be good to you!

Hugs!

The blue pitcher I have one just like it. It was my Mothers's it has a little bowl that the pitcher sets in.
That pin cushion is to cute reminds me of going to Paducah kentucky in April to the national quilt show do you attend that?

We all have the coughing, sore throat and runny nose here.

You have a way of making thrift store finds looks so elegant. In my house, they just look like junk. I can never get the look quite put together. Well done for you!

Those plates are WONDERFUL! You KNOW I love red! And cherries are my FAVE! The blue pitcher looks PERFECT in 'my' room! LOL! Oh, how I want to visit and sleep in that beautiful, peaceful room! (If I DO, will I get to ride the stick horse, too? I LIKE that!) And the quilting pin is so cute! I don't quilt (more's the pity) but I think it would be good for ANY creative person! I hope she sells a ton of them!

Susan, I love your thrift store treasures! I shop thrift stores too and love the "thrill" of finding something special. Your blue bedroom is beautiful and looks like a relaxing place for your guests to stay. I think we got your AL storm here in SC the other night. It was a doozy.
Hope you have a good day today.

PS I like Barbara Anne's way of "multi-tasking"!

He Turned My Mourning into Dancing

Dance
Our beautiful dance team

Think women don't have power? Then get yourself into a room full of them, all praising God and singing his glory and you'll think different I bet.

Last night was the kick-off of the Leeds First United Methodist Women's Spiritual Conference. The power in the room was palpable. We heard some wonderful music from our praise team and a great solo from young Katie T. Our dance team overcame a sound-system glitch to touch us with their talent. And Pastor Judy left no one unmoved with her inspirational message.

A full day is schedule for today, starting with a continental breakfast at 9:00 a.m., starring chicken biscuits and cinnamon rolls. Then lots of good music, inspiring messages, good food, and door prizes. I wish you could all join us.

But since most of you can't, I suggest you take trip over to Beverly's Pink Saturday party and enjoy all the pinkness.

UFO Progress Report: Week 8

Soph&Skip

<<<< Doggies in Time Out? Or just dog-tired doggies?

I'm a little later this morning than I wanted to be getting Mr. Linky up. It has been quite a night here at The Yellow House.

Around midnight, we were hit with a ferocious storm--strong wind, heavy rain, tornado watch. About the same time as the storm arrived, The Two Stooges decided it was a time for a rousing game of let's-chase-each-other-around-and-around-through-the-house-barking-as-loud-as-we-can.

That was after a full two hours of trying to get to sleep with Skipper on my bed having an itch attack or something. Wriggling, squirming, scratching, shaking his little doggie bed in his teeth.

So we're all pretty tired this morning, but we're here. Such as we are.

Edge

The only UFO progress I made this week was to trim the Charisma quilt for binding. Haven't bound the quilt, or even made the binding--but progress is progress, don't you think?

G-Day wasn't too bad, just long. The worst part about the doctor visit was sitting naked in a cold exam room for almost an hour, waiting for Dr. D. Of course I had that tiny little paper towel to cover me and keep me warm--but for some reason, that didn't work too well.

But I had my mammies grammed, my pappy smeared, and my bonies scanned. From a 1:30 appointment, I got back home just before dark, completely out of spoons. The good news is, Dr. D. says that, since I'm at low risk of cervical cancer, I don't have to have the pappy thing again for two years.

I see some of us think along the same lines when it comes to unpleasantnesses. Except I rewarded myself BEFORE the exam. I was afraid I'd be too tired afterwards. And I was. I stopped at one of my favorite thrift stores on the way in to town. Found a couple of treasures, which I'll show you later.

BLOGLESS BUSTERS' REPORTS

Deb P., she of the busted wrist, reports that she didn't completed anything this week. But she's almost done with a crocheted cowl for her Ashleigh's birthday, almost finished with an anniversary cross-stitch, and is still working on the wedding sampler.  I hope Deb sends me pics to post when all these almosts are done. I wanta see.

Deb is in the midst of moving her sewing room downstairs to make room for her Ashleigh and SIL to move in with her. (A girl who does all this with a wrist injury puts me to shame.)
"Please tell me that spring has come to Alabama!", Deb adds. (It seems that it has, Deb.) Her part of the world is again buried under a bunch of snow. But she has promised to lay off the snow shoveling and let that wrist completely heal.

Blogless Barbara has made progress this week:

#10, Disappearing 9 Patch, has a label and is off the list.
#5, Summer Fans, has more than half of it's binding hand sewn.
#17, mini paper-pieced Fans: block layout decided, sewing begun.

"I seem to be on a roll on the itty bitty quilts for alzquilts.org." Barbara reports. She has donated six so far to Ami Simms' alzheimer's quilt initiative.

I plan to turn some of my UFOs into an alzquilt for Ami too, in memory of her sweet Madison doggie, who passed away this week.

I feel so totally discombobulated this morning, so I'm shutting down the writing for now, going to the sewing room to see if the stitching seems to flow a little better than this writing is doing.

All you Little Green Quilters, don't forget to add you link to Mr. Linky below. I'm outa here.

Mercy! What a night you three had! One of our dearly departed dogs would always get into the bathtub and quake when it was storming. Any port in a storm, you know.

That wind and rain got here about 8a today and it was an incredible, torrential downpour off and on for a couple of hours. The sun is out now but the wind continues. Another blustery day here - but warm - with more storms possible this afternoon.

I look forward to seeing your reward treasures and applaud your successful trip to Dr. G. I always take knee socks to wear as that helps the warmth and the less bare feeling.

Yes, you quilt trimming is stellar progress! Well done!

Please consider a nap today, okay? Your spoon drawer will thank you.

Hugs!

Congrats to Barbara! She's coming along in grand style with her UFOs!!

Susan ~ I'm still working on the two main UFOs from the past two weeks (crock and geranium and writing in the journals)...so I won't post another incomplete picture of those until they're completed...which might be next week with the x-stitch actually. Lots more green leaves were added this week..but just not enough! I'm thinking about what to start next, and maybe I'll post a preview of that next Friday.

Hope you don't get blown away...our wind today is atrocious! I'm staying in.

It's nice to read about all the UFO busting going on! I have been down and out because of lupus related problems and I haven't been working on my latest quilt which is the string quilt. I plan to email a photo of it to you when it's finished. I'm almost there on it, the top is finished and I'm machine quilting it on my Pfaff. I feel better so quilting here I come!

A friend of mine is dying of cervical cancer. She had started a Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. She has only a few weeks left to live according to the doctors. She gave the Flower Garden blocks to me a couple of weeks ago. She asked if I'd finish the quilt and keep it after her death. I will start putting the blocks together as soon as I finish the string quilt. (I only work on one quilt at a time and finish it
before moving on!) But, hopefully by next week I can start on the GFG quilt. I plan to return the finished quilt to her family. Or if a miracle occurs: to her.

Keep on busting everyone! Thanks to Susan for hosting and for so nicely posting on her blog the results of those who do not blog. What a "fine southern lady" you are Ms Susan! Sandy Gail

The G Is for Gynecologist

Dear-ba-dont-take-the-bet-thx-sanford One of my favorite things to do in the early evening is sit down at my jigsaw puzzle or on the sofa with the doggies, tune in "Sanford and Son," and rest for an hour or so. Racist and grumpy though he be, I love Fred Sanford. He's one of the funniest tv characters ever.

In spite of all the verbal abuse of his son Lamont and sister-in-law Esther, in spite of his contempt for Asians ("Chinese food make me burp."), Latinos ("Get that goat out of here!"), and ugly white people, down deep--way, way down deep--he's really an old teddy bear. I love Fred G. Sanford.

***

Today is G Day. Not my favorite day of the year, btw. That would be Fall Back Day. You know? That day that used to come the last Sunday in October when we get a whole extra hour. That Day is still around, but politicians keep monkeying with it, and now I never know when it's coming.

Anyway, but today is G Day. I skipped G Day last year, the first time I have skipped it since I was a young lass. With what all else I was dealing with last year, I just didn't feel like adding yet another aggravation.

So I thought I'd better not skip G Day this year. So I won't. Trouble is, the fibro stiffness has progressed a lot in the last two years. I'm not quite sure I can get my feet up in those things this time. And I'm not looking forward to the mammy-gramming either. Don't I have enough pain already?

***

All you UFO Busters, remember that tomorrow is Progress Report Day for us. Mr. Linky should be up and running early tomorrow morning for you to enter your blog link. I hope everyone has been busy and has lots of progress to report. Because I don't have any. And I'm not likely to make any today--this being G Day and all.

15 Minutes Could Save You 15% or More

Much more! A whole box full, in fact.

I have a big box of fabric scraps! I mean a biiiiiiggggg box! Big enough to choke a horse--if, that is, I was of a mind to choke a horse, which I'm not. Let's make that perfectly clear.

Scraps
A small sample of what's in that biiiiiggggg box of scraps!

Anyway, here they were, all those scraps of fabric. Beautiful fabric. Little scraps, big scraps, middle-size scraps.

During the Great Declutter Wars of 2010, I gathered scraps from all over my sewing room, from all the bins and boxes and bags, and boxed them all up into one humongous box and set it out for the charity truck to pick up. Approximately five minutes later, I brought the box back inside.

Next, I made a plan to divide all the scraps up into much smaller grab bags, take the bags to guild meetings and give them away. I didn't even get far enough with that plan to fill the first grab bag.

So that huge box of fabric scraps has been sitting in my upstairs hallway for many months. From time to time, I open that box and deposit more scraps from projects I'm working on. But I still haven't brought myself to give those scraps away. I want them. So I have two choices: either I let them sit and do nobody any good, growing bigger and bigger. Or I can use them. But to do that, I need a plan. I found one.

By chance, I happened upon the Bumble Beans, Inc., blog. Victoria is the blogger at Bumble Beans. She has a way with fabric scraps that just blows me away. On her blog site, I found a button for Victoria's 15 Minute Sew-Along group.  All this has inspired me to dive into my big box of scraps and create.

15min

15min1

These blocks show what I have done since finding Bumble Beans and the 15-Minute group. If you're interested, you can visit the blog and read all about it. There's a requirement that you have to be able and willing to post on the Sew Along blog, but otherwise, it's a pretty laid-back group.

Here's the idea in a nutshell: After I finish working on whatever sewing project I'm working on, I spend 15 minutes sewing scraps together to make "fabric." (I don't always stick with the 15 minutes. I just sew till I stop.)

A visit to Bumble Beans 15 Minute Sew-Along Group will show you that members do a lot more with their "fabric" that what I'm showing here. For now, I'm stopping with my unit when I can cut a 12 1/2" square from it. Later I might cut these squares into smaller squares or triangles or hearts or stars or something. Or I might just sew them all together to make a quilt. For now, I'm just having fun making them.

37126_159155747450400_104075532958422_339024_5809956_n In other quilting blog news, you might have heard that Ami Simms lost her boon companion Madison yesterday. Madison was a dog of many talents. I encourage you to drop by Ami's blog and read her beautiful and moving tribute to Madison and enjoy the photos. And while you're there, you might leave Ami a few words of comfort. I know her heart is broken right now.

On 02/23/2011, Susan Ramey Cleveland said ...

The good thing about this is that you don't have to consider it starting a new quilt. It's just cleaning up after yourself. Or something.

I also follow Victoria's blog and the 15 minute blog. I have gotten some really good ideas from both. I have found that there are times that I want to sew but don't feel like thinking about a pattern. Just making fabric with Victoria's method from scraps is perfect for those times.

I'm a follower of Ami and Madison's blog so I saw her post yesterday. Cried through most of it. Goldie sent her a loving meow.

And you're so sweet to care so much about others.... it comes through your blog in the way you share.

15 Minutes or More Could...

I have a box of fabric scraps that would choke a horse. (I hate silly sayings like "choke a horse" and "sick as a dog." Why do I use them?)
I've had them all boxed up and ready to give/throw away since The Great Declutter Wars of 2010--but I just can't bring myself to do it. I set the box out for the charity truck a couple of times, but brought it back in both times. I even had a plan to take the scraps to guild in small batches and give them away. But that hasn't worked either. They're my scraps, and I want them.

Sweet Success Has Made Me Bitter

Bummed Doggies
"What's that she's got now, Sophie?" --Skipper
***

OK, guys, here's the deal. Mama's got a brand new table for her Featherweight sewing machine. Loretta and some other girls had their's at retreat, and I wanted me one. Mine has just arrived and it, oh yeah, has to be assembled--or at least partially assembled. So if you two can't help, at least stay out of my way. 'kay?

Bummed Bag

It's called a SewEzi Portable Sewing Table. It comes in a handsome bag and everything.

Bummed Table

You see, most of it is already assembled. I just have to attach the tray that holds the sewing machine and we'll be ready to roll. Let's go, guys.

Bummernuts

The instructions say to add four of these little spacers on top of each of the "hangers" to make the tray be at the proper height for the Featherweight. OK.

Shoot! What's this? A little alan wrench (or is it allen wrench?). I hate those things. They're made for wee folk with tiny fingers.

Wow! That only took me a few hours to accomplish, what with all the fibromyalgia and carpel tunnel and back problems and a horrible cold and all--not to mention both innate and acquired clutziness.

Bummed

Uh oh! But look. The sewing machine sits too deep in the well of the table. There's a gap there big enough to push Skipper through! Do y'all see that? What the hey?
***

Bummed Sophie
"Oh no, I'm not looking. No way. Better duck, Skipper. She's gonna blow!" --Sophie

Bummed Skipper2
"Blow what?" --Skipper
***

Now what do I do? What the crabapple do I do now???? OK, I know. I'll send off an angry email to the company and demand that they solve this problem. After all, this table wasn't really cheap. A little customer ire should solve my problem.
***

Bummed Skipper
"Could I possibly have a treat now?" --Skipper
***

OK, so the angry email is sent. Now I'll just sit here and wait to hear from them. I'll bet heads are rolling at the EzeSew place. (Time lapse while my brain gets a second wind.)

Hmmmm. You know I think my problem is that I put in all four of those spacers. That's what's making the machine sit too deep in the well. If I take one off of each of the four hangers, that should work. But of course that means dealing with that danged allen or alan wrench again. Well, no help for it if I want my table to work. Anyway, those people at SewEze (or was that EzeSew? Hey, I probably wrote to the wrong company!) haven't answered my righteously angry email yet.

Well that was even more difficult than the first time I did it, but the tray is reattached now, sans one layer of spacers, so now my Featherweight should be just the right height.

Well, no, it isn't. In fact, I can't tell any difference. Maybe I should do some calculating. Let's see. The sewing machine is approximately 1/4"-3/8" too far down in the well. The little spacers are, let's see, 3 mm in thickness, so the instructions say. So that means if I eliminate, what, one more--or is it two more?

Hey, doggies, did y'all know that millimeters will not translate into inches? OK, so I'll just eliminate another layer of spacers. That should do the trick.

Well, the operation of the alan/allen wrench is getting a little easier, but the sewing machine still doesn't fit.

I'm doing this one more time and that's it. If it still doesn't work I'm going to follow my late daddy's example and throw the whole entire thing out the window. (I inherited my patience from my daddy.)

Deep breaths. Deep breaths. (That's the advice my friend Stuart gives me when I'm about to blow.) A few more deeeeeeeep breaths. OK. Here goes. I can do this.

Oooph. OUCH! Oooops. Uh oh. Dang it! Bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep bleep. THERE! It's done. Done is done. Done all it's gonna get done. If this adjustment doesn't work, I'm throwing in the towel.

Well, now it's almost the proper height. They say that close only counts in horse shoes. Well, this time close is counting in assemblage of a sewing table. If I ever get over this ordeal, I might take it apart again and remove that last layer of spacers. I bet it will be exactly right then. Why does everything have to be so unnecessarily difficult?

Bummerdone

Now I'm going to run a tub of hot water and pour a glass of cold wine and chill my tired self out for a while.

Anybody seen Frick and Frack? Hey, guys, where are y'all? Hey, doggies, anybody want a treat? Hmph. Guess not.

ADDENDUM: A very nice lady just telephoned me from the SewEzi Company. It turns out I wasn't supposed to use ANY of the little white spacers. MOTHER OF MARMADUKE!!!! Can you believe that? I was a little embarrassed by my evil email and didn't ask her then why the hay fork were they included in the package, and why did the instructions say to add them. I just wanted to get off the phone.

Okay, I am seriously rolling on the floor with laughter. You are the funniest thing. Your story is so cleverly put that I could just picture the whole thing! Wish I lived closer. I actually love putting stuff like that together and would be glad to have helped you. You just crack me up. You aren't old enough to be my grandmother (or maybe better put, I'm too old to be your granddaughter), but all my grandma's are gone now. I would love to be your granddaughter and help you more! And to just hang out with you. I love your sense of humor.

Susan, You made me laugh ... I am sorry, but you did. We all get frustrated with things you have to put together and I often want to throw things out the window.
I like your table. I need to get one for my Featherweight ... could you put it together for me? Just kidding!
Your babies are so sweet! When I am down and feeling bad my babies can always bring a smile to my face. My doggie has been digging to China or trying to dig a basement for her doggie house!
I am glad you have everything resolved with the table! Have a glass of wine for me ... okay?

I am laughing, (just a little) about your situation! I hope you can now enjoy sewing at your table. I picked one up from a quilt show when sew-ezi had a booth at the Minnesota Quilt Show. I was able to wheel it off the floor because it was the show demo! I remember I had to call back the lady that sold it to me, because I needed to readjust it for 2 different sewing machines after I got it home. They have the white spacers and they have some purple boosters so that it is easier to convert the table for different machines. This way you make the white spacers fit for your deepest machine and use the purple risers to make lower profiles be at the correct sewing height. I think it's a great table now!

I sure hear you! WHY don't instructions accurately INSTRUCT these days???

Part of my afternoon has been spent with DS2 trying to put together some sort of German made thing (and I'm a good part German myself)and my question is so when the HECK did those anal-retentive folks stop including detailed to the max instructions in their products??? PULEEEEEZE! We've had this thing partially together 3 times and each time find we should have done something A before we did something B. We got that information on-line and no thanks to the company who made this expensive thing. Grrrrrrrr!

Congrats on seeing the aggravation to it's end and to telling the company their instructions are misleading.

Hope the folks in China send Sophie and Skipper back!

Some wine is in my near future, too.

I have dibs on AMIL's featherweight that belonged to her dear mother.

Loooved the story!!!!. Felt like I was right there with you watching and snickering when you weren't looking. Sorry you had trouble putting your table together. Iam not very good at stuff like that either. DH cannot understand how I can cut and sew 100's of little triangles and then sew those into a quilt but I don't have the patience to put together or fix little things like bookcases or sewing tables. Have a good day.

I was thinking that same thing yesterday, Diane, while I was wrestling with that little table. How is it, I asked myself, that I can make a quilt, which is made up of hundreds of tiny little parts, but when it comes to reading instructions for assembling something hard (as in not soft like fabric), I feel like my brain is on a merry go round?

On 02/23/2011, AnnieO said ...

Too funny! The doggie portion was even funnier! I bought an unassembled sewing desk that came in about eight boxes with a hundred pieces of hardware. Took three tries and the help of two men and a drill to get that sucker together last year...and the air lift was set a teeny tiny bit too low for my machine. I wedged some cardboard under the machine to fix it!

Dream

Dreams-mirror

I feel compelled to write down the dream I had last night. I so often don't remember enough about my dreams to write them, but this one is still very clear, so here goes.

A recurring theme in my dreams since Vann's death has been that he has left me. Not died; just left. (I have never to my knowledge dreamed of his dying, except before he died.) Last night's dream included the "leaving" theme.

Vann was going in for surgery. Before going, he told me he was not coming back home but was going to return to Camilla to live with his parents. He had decided to take his first wife with him because she's the one that his parents love and he didn't want to make them mad. He asked me to give him back his wedding ring (Reality: I have worn Vann's wedding ring on my right hand since his death), so that his parents wouldn't suspect that he wasn't really married. (Reality: He never wore a wedding ring when he was married the first time.) I let him have the ring.

6a00d8341cbb0053ef0133f385a59d970b-400wi
Vann's wedding ring on the middle finger of my right hand. He had this ring especially made to be his wedding ring when we got married.

Now I was faced with the sad prospect of rebuilding my life without the man I loved and without understanding why he had left. An old friend from my school days shows up with his wife and three sweet little kids to visit me. (Reality: I know the name of this old friend, but I don't want to share it here.) The old friend tells me that he has decided to take a second wife and he very much wants me to be her. He explains that, no he isn't Morman but that his church has recently adopted the practice of having more than one wife. The wife is quite happy with the idea.

I spend time getting to know his wife and children, whom I begin to love very much. The wife likes me too, but the children are a little shy to talk to me. They are more interested in playing with Sophie than in talking to me. Then it comes to light that this wife is really dying of cancer, and he needs a new mom for his kids. This doesn't disturb me; I'm still amenable to the idea of marrying my friend and becoming the children's mom.

A hoard of people show up for a prayer vigil for my friend's dying wife (who looks just fine, btw). Some of these people are ones I know, some I don't know. There is much discussion among the crowd about one person's (something she has grown, I can't remember, I think some kind of squash or pumpkin), which she has brought to share. Among the gathered group is another boy from school days (I know his name too but am not sharing.) He holds my hand and smiles at me. He assures me that there's nothing to worry about here.

In the meantime, my kitchen (which appears to be a kitchen where I lived many years ago) is all junky with dishes and some other things I can't quite see, and I'm embarrassed and try to explain to the friend who wants to marry me that I was in the process of straightening up when he and his family arrived. He assures me that he has no problem with my housekeeping and simply wants me to teach his little girl how to quilt. So I start practicing my quilting while the prayer vigil is going on. But I sew through a blue-and-white china plate by mistake and am in the process of trying to take the stitches out when...

REALITY: Skipper starts his high-pitched barking at something going on outside, and I wake up.

It's hard to explain how these dreams that include Vann's "leaving" make me feel. It's sadness and anger and disbelief and panic all wrapped up into one emotion. It's likely just the grief that I haven't quite put to rest yet. I knew then and still know now that Vann would never have left me, except in death. Maybe I think he went a little too gentle into that good night and didn't rage quite enough. I remember just before his last hospitalization that he said to me, "I think I'm ready to go to God's house." I told him I was not ready. I regret saying that now. It could have made him feel guilty about leaving me, and I would never want to do that. And a friend of his later told me that, in the hospital that last time, Vann told him something that I can't even bring myself to completely share. He was agonizing over the fact of what his illness was doing to me. "It's killing her," Vann told his friend. I can't even tell the rest.

I don't' know why all this is coming back today, although it does come back from time to time, particularly after one of the "leaving" dreams. I don't know if any blog readers will read this. I just wanted it recorded for some reason. Maybe just for me.

(Andy's Happy Birthday Wishes following this.)

Well, I definitely read this & - for whatever it's worth - I think it may be a combination of your missing Vann AND a teeny bit of the anger stage of grief. Because anger IS a natural part of grieving! Of COURSE Vann would never have voluntarily left you! He adored you & it was abundantly obvious! Could be that all this comes up because you are tired & feel bad physically and maybe wish Vann were there to take care of you! (He IS there, tho'. I really, really BELIEVE that!) I just LOVE you, Susan!

Dreams fasinate me, especially ones that bring in people from long ago in our lives , but put them in the present time. I agree with Kai that your recurring dreams of Vann leaving are part of your grief, also showing that Vann is still a large presence in your life.
Happy birthday to your Andy.

I agree with the comment above mine by Kai. I think you are working through something. Asking God to give you a more healing dream. I've had one where my late husband looked at me and said (with a huge smile), "I have everything just the way I want it now." I woke up feeling that some pieces of the puzzle fell into my heart. It's a process. Sometimes a long process. I appreciate your willingness to share on this journey. You'll probably never have an idea of how many you are helping through your posts.

Thanks for sharing your dream Sue, I have started having dreams with my Glenn in them and wondered if others go through this too. Mormons (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) don't practice polygamy. They haven't for over 100 yrs. The people who take more than one wife do not belong to the "Mormon" church. They have taken their beliefs and gone their separate way.

Can't explain the meaning of your dream...but I've occasionally had extremely frustrating dreams myself. They seem so real. I don't try to understand or interpret the frustrating ones.....just know your sweet husband loved you and would never willingly leave you. When my dream involves someone that has past away, I talk to the Lord and ask Him to say hello or give that person a hug for me. Don't know if it's possible but I ask anyway. Blessings to you and I hope you get a good nights rest!

I have weird dreams like that too sometimes. Later on something will happen, then all the dreams will rush back to me, and I can see then what they were trying to tell me. It is good to write them down so you can go back to them.

Pat, when I close my prayers at night, I ask God to say goodnight to Vann for me and tell him that I love him.

On 02/22/2011, Susan Ramey Cleveland said ...

Robin, I know that Mormons no longer practice polygomy. But in my dream I had a question as to whether this guy was Mormon. I guess because of movies, etc., (especially Outlaw Josie Wales--one of my favorites) the practice is associated with Mormons in my subconscious. I have a good friend who isa member of LDS church. And although he has lots of children and about 568 grandchildren (exaggeration!), he has only one sweet wife.

On 02/22/2011, Barbara Anne said ...

Oh, my friend, I know that grief is processed in bits and pieces over time and this dream is probably another hiccup of the grief process as you said.

Perhaps the idea of Vann leaving in the dream keeps the possibility open that he might have come back had the dream continued if Skipper hadn't barked?

I imagine the friends who come to your home represent the fact that you're surrounded by loving, caring friends and family and that there is happiness ahead. Vann would want you to be sure of that. I, too, believe he isn't far away.

Big hugs!

On 02/22/2011, Susan Ramey Cleveland said ...

Abandoned...yes, that's a good way to describe the feeling I have in teh "leaving" dreams. Thanks, Debbie.

On 02/22/2011, Robin Booth said ...

I'm sorry that your husband is no longer with you. It must be a lonely time. I guess sometimes seeing them in dreams is better than not seeing them at all.

On 02/23/2011, Debra said ...

I will have a series of dreams for awhile where my 1st husband (who I was married to for 20+ years) will come to me & ask me to forgive him and continue to be married to him. I go along with the idea for awhile and then I wake up in a sweat in the dream remembering that I am married to Wes. It's like I have gone off and forgotten to tell Wes I am leaving for my previous life. It's almost a dream inside of a dream. Wes is always patiently waiting for me to return & I am always worried that when I return I will be "in trouble" like in HS when I didn't come home when expected.

At the end of the dream, I always realize I want to be married to Wes and that the past is the past & I can't & don't want to go back there.

I think in the last one I even laughed and said something like, "Are you kidding? and leave this behind (meaning my life with Wes)?" and I haven't had the dream again.

My take is that I am/was still trying to reconcile my 2 lives. I am sure yours is grief-driven. It's a long process but recording it is helpful.

It is so interesting to read this.. we the humans of internet...have forgotten the "dream" - we day-dream rather :)...
And probably this is the firt story since I have been around the internet around something emotional and imagination...
looking at the wikipedia...
"Dreams are a succession of images, ideas, emotions and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is known as oneirology." - thanks for the post.

New Pinks

Pink2

I was lucky enough in the door prize drawing at the quilters retreat to win this pack of pretty pink-and-brown fabrics. The package included a pattern, but I think I'll use them to make pinwheels or stars for an upcoming baby quilt.

At Monday's meeting, a fellow guild member was selling these wonderful quilter pins that she had made. I thought this one bore a remarkable likeness to me (except she has brown eyes instead of blue), so I had to have her.

Pink1
I'm linking to Beverly's Pink Saturday Party. I've missed for the past couple of weeks, so I'm heading over there to see what all kind of pinkness everyone has been up to.

UFO Progress Report: Weeks 6-7

Noah

Since I missed filing a UFO Progress Report last week because I was at retreat, I'm combining two weeks into one So anything you've done in the past two weeks is fair game for this report.

I picked up two quilts from the quilter on Tuesday: "Two By Two" (UFO #1, aka Noah Quilt) and "Charisma" (UFO #32). Now all they need is binding and labeling and they'll be busted. I left "Flutterbugs" (UFO #9) for quilting while I was there. You've already seen the progress I made with "Autumn Whirlwind" (UFO #19) and "McGregor's Garden" (UFO #14, aka The Bunny Quilt) at retreat last week, so I won't repost that.

Charisma

Blogless Barbara reports that her UFO #10, Disappearing 9 Patch, has its binding on and needs only a label. And her #5, Summer Fans has its quilt clips (I was just wishing I had some of these) in place and is ready for the handwork on its binding.

Barbara has also made another itty bitty quilt top for www.alzquilts.org .She used small triangles left over from Pat Sloan's OP Challenge that some of us took part in two years ago.  She made 1 1/2" half square triangles from those Halloween fabrics, added a glow-in-the-dark spiderweb border and an outer border of pumpkin fabric.  Although this project was not on Barbara's original UFO list, it will "count" nonetheless as UFO #27 if it was started before the challenge. That goes for all UFO Busters in this challenge. You can add projects if you discover some that got left off.

Below is Mr. Linky. If you have a UFO report posted on your blog (or even if you don't and you're a member of the UFO bust), please add your info.

After seeing yours, maybe that will be the next one on my list to start.

Bunny Book & More

Bunny Book Some of you asked for the name of the book from whence came my bunny patterns. Here it is, Bunnies & More by Darcy Ashton from Ashton Publishing. I got mine at a local quilt shop, but you should be able to find it online. Just google the title and author.

Remember that tomorrow is UFO Progress Report Day. If you're a Little Green Quilter (Stitcher, Crafter, etc.) and have a report of any kind, please enter your info in Mr. Linky tomorrow morning. If you're a blogless buster, email me your report.

Over the past two days, I've developed a cold or something: sore throat, watery eyes, stuffy head. I know it isn't the flu. I don't think I have a fever and I don't feel bad enough for it to be the flu. But my throat does hurt pretty badly, and lots of sneezing and coughing going on. Funny, I used to never get a cold or the flu. But for the past two years, I've had the flu once and two or three colds. Guess I need to get back on my vitamins.

Book club is supposed to meet here at The Yellow House tomorrow. I'm not sure what to do about that. I don't want to pass on my crud to anyone, but I don't want to cancel either. I suggested to my sister that she might want to host instead, and she sort of poo-pooed the notion. Oh well, maybe I'll be all better tomorrow.

I'm hoping to get a little sewing-room time in today. I'm making really good progress on my UFOs, although nothing is completely busted yet, except for the quilt I passed on the Debra for her quilt donations. But several are very close to busted. Keep in mind that if you have any UFOs that you don't want to finish, Debra would welcome them for her donation programs.

I hope everyone is having the same kind of gorgeous weather we're having here. Temps around 70, with the sun shining. It's wonderful after Old Man Winter's assault on us. Haven't had very much fibro pain all week. It's amazing.

I have an awful cold too. I'm starting to suspect the flu, as I did not get a flu shot this year. The first time in I don't know how long. That's a great book. We have it at our quilt shop too.

Hope you start feeling much better, soon! :-)

We have had warm weather here, but it's been pretty dreary. That's okay. I'll take the warmth! That looks like a cute book!

I posted my UFO stuff a day early, but I'll come back tomorrow and post the link on Mr. Linky. Thanks for helping me keep on top of my UFOs this year!

The Clue on the Cutting Table

A Skipper Lou Blue Mystery

Skip1
I smell goodies.

I was enjoying an afternoon snack of granola yesterday when Skipper came into the sewing room to see what I was doing. Immediately he caught the scent of granola. I, just as immediately, closed the container of granola and hid it. But Skipper would not be dissuaded. He knew the goodies were somewhere and he meant to find them. He concentrated his search on the cutting table, where the container had been sitting until a short time before.

Skip2 Hmmmm. Not here.

Skip3
Pooey! Nothing but scissors blades and pencil lead.

Skip4
The scent is getting stronger, but that doesn't look like a goodie.

Skip5
U
h huh, she thinks she can fool me. She moved the cup.

Finally, when the cutting table gave up no more clues, Skip jumped into my lap and went for my mouth. Having seen where Skipper's tongue has spent a good deal of time, I wasn't having it in my mouth. So I relented, got out the container of granola, and gave my foxie pooch a few bites, being careful to pick out all the raisins. That satisfied him, and he went on his way.

END OF STORY

Now for the rabbit quilt top that I've been promising a photo of (of which I've been promising a photo, I mean). This is as far as I got at retreat. I've been considering borders ever since. I think I'm going to do a 2" green border all around, followed by a pieced border made from 2" squares (checkerboard) cut from all the fabrics in the quilt. At least that's the plan for now.

OMG I actually gasped out loud when I scrolled to the quilt top!!! GoRGEoUs doesn't even begin...

Bad, bad Skipper!! Mine are equally bad though and I won't let them lick my mouth either(although they sometimes get one over on me). I've learned not to leave a plate or glass unattended!!

Love the bunnies Susan - and I think your border ideas sound just right!
Skipper is obviously a very smart dog! Well he'd have to be, he came and found you, didn't he!

What a beautiful quilt. I love log cabin and the bunnies are beautiful. Was it a pattern or did you design it yourself?

That's the finest quilt ever! Gorgeous!

That is too funny about your lil pooch. Glad mine just stand and sniff around. I don't ever have food in my sewing room. I think framing your gorgeous bunny quilt in either the green or blue border would look great, and I love the idea of using all the colors in the last border as well. It will look great, can't wait to see it all finished.

I was trying so hard not to laugh-snort when reading your story! Too cute! Reminds me of my cat when he thinks we are having mac'n'cheese! We can't hide from him!

Love, love your bunny quilt! I have the book with those patterns in it - gotta dig around and find it. Spring is a great time to make bunnies, eh? :)

LOL with your little dog story - mine was like yours, always found a way to the treats.

Little Skipper is such a cutie! Goldie is the first pet I have ever had that has no interest in people food. She loves to drink water from my glass though - yuck! Lids fix that problem.

The quilt is awesome. I love it. Skipper is so smart and he got his way afterall. I loved the pictures. So cute.

Susan ~ The quilt is wonderful, and I think your idea of a border plus checkerboard would add delightfully to the whole effect. I love it!

On 02/16/2011, Sandy said ...

That Skipper!! He's a hoot! Love, love, love that quilt. The colors are beautiful. If it were mine, I'd do a 2 inch inside border using the red (not sure of the color but it looks red) and then maybe a 6 inch outer border of the green. I would be afraid the checkerboard would detract from the beautiful log cabin blocks. Maybe outline quilt bunnies on the green border or bows since they're all wearing bows. Just a thought. You should be very proud of that quilt. It's a winner regardless of how you choose to border it. (I know, a dangling participle!!)

I love Skipper. What am I saying...I love all dogs! that is a great story. I would not be able to resist giving him a treat, too!

LOVE the bunny quilt, your handwork, the fabrics you chose, and the marvelous layout of the blocks. Well done! I look forward to seeing the finished top once you've made your final decision and have sewn it on.

Skipper is too cute in his diligent search! I have a screen door on my sewing room so the cats cannot get inside.

I also have a Laurel Burch mug on my cutting table with the same sorts of items in it.

AMIL and DS2 are fine following the car accident, just really sore from the seat belts and airbags and AMIL has major bruising because of her blood thinner med. Thanks for your concern and kind words!

Hugs!

The bunny quilt is the cutiest. Love it and your work looks amazing. I can't beleive it was on your UFO list.
Skipper sounds like my Gibby, but Gibby would want the whole container full. Still trying to get my home computer up and running for tomorrows UFO post, I missed last weeks.

Your quilt top is lovely...can't wait to see it completed and your doggie, is well, so doggone cute...he knew you'd give in to his desire for granola! *smile*

I think that's my favorite quilt YET! It's HAPPY! And Skipper? Well, let's just say he's provided my entertainment for today 'cause I KNOW I'll grin every single time I think of him with his lil' cute investigative self! Where was Ms. Sophie during all his Sherlock Holmes activity? Probably lying comfortably nearby, shaking her head at her brother! LOL!

Grandma, What Big Teeth You Have!

Ajtc-wolf-and-red When you play, you pay. I know, I know. It's a time-worn old cliche, but true nonetheless. I'm so far behind with everything, I feel like the wolf is on my tail. One would think that a retired widow, living alone with only her two doggies, would have a rather relaxed schedule. But it ain't happening. I have so many things that need to go on my to-do list, I don't know which one to list first.

But the good news is that I'm feeling rather well these days. Spring is in the air. Nothing blooming or anything like that, but temps have moderated (and so have my pain and fatigue). I've already begun to cough and sneeze, so spring has to be somewhere near here.

I guess I'll start with the February guild meeting show-and-tell, as I promised. Here goes.

February 2011 Meeting of
Birmingham Quilters Guild
2-14-11

  Guild19
O
f course, we had heart quilts (well, just a couple).

Guild1
Our own UFO Buster, Lynn, made this beauty for her dad for Christmas. Lynn lives "out west" and isn't a member of BQG, but her mom, Nancy, is.

Guild2
Barbara S. made this sweet little doll quilt at retreat as a gift for her great granddaughter.

Guild3
Memory fails me. I can't remember whose quilt this is, but it's a real clock. Tick tock and everything.

Guild4

Guild5
Memory is a strange thing: I can't remember who made this, but I can remember that she said it's a Gordian Knot.

Guild6
Another memory failure, but isn't it pretty?

Guild7
Vasha made this pretty winter quilt from block-of-the-month blocks that she won in December 2010. And yes, she already has a quilt made from them. WOW!

Guild8
I give up! I'm going to have to start taking notes.

Guild9
Okay, I know this is Peggy R.'s lovely quilt, made from 2010 blocks-of-the-month.

Guild10
Another fine quilter's 2010 blocks-of-the-month. (If I could only remember who she is.)

Guild11
Sally B. made this one. (Score another one for me.)

Guild12
Another lovely.

Guild14
Norma Gene's jacket is so cute. It has quilter's sayings on it like "She who dies with the most fabric wins."

Guild15

Guild16
Judy used some of her grandmother's crocheted doilies in the making of this elegant vest.

Guild17

Guild20
G
erry's "Mama Says" masterpiece

Guild18
Aren't Vasha's little purses just too cute? She made them for our June 2011 quilt show's boutique.

There was another show-and-tell that escaped the camera--again. My bunny rabbit quilt top. I can't believe I didn't get a photo of it at retreat or on the show-and-tell clothesline at guild. I'll photograph it today and post it tomorrow.

Also, I promise I'll take good notes next time so I can give credit where credit is due.

After the business meeting and show-and-tell, fellow member Lura gave an excellent presentation on sewing spaces. She had slides and everything--even one slide of my sewing room as it appeared when I first moved into The Yellow House, all clean and spiffy--many, many fat quarters ago.

The quilter who has two of my UFOs called yesterday to tell me they're ready. I'm going to pick them up today. Don't think I'll show them here until I have the binding on though.

Bye now.

The tree quilt was made by Vasha Rosenblum from blocks she won in December 2010!!! She also made the little purses for our guild's booth at Quiltfest. Thanks for posting the pictures of me in my vest which was made many years ago.

Wow what great quilts. Glad your feeling better. I know all about that list your talking about. Guess we need to learn to break it down into segments -or so I'm told. Happy Quilting!

Great show and tell. I love the Christmas tree quilt. Lynn is a friend of mine through blogging. When I saw her quilt, I recognized it and thought, "How in the heck did that get in your guild meeting as you live so far from Lynn?!" How cool that her mom is in your guild. What a small world!

What a lot of wonderful, creative quilts!!! Applause, applause to one and all!!!!!!! Thanks for taking us along for show and tell!

I'm late checking in because late this morning, AMIL and DS2 were in a car accident - broadsided on the rear passenger door as AMIL was completing a left turn. Both AMIL and DS2 are okay other than the aches they'll have from seat belts and air bags but the car is surely totaled. We spent the afternoon in the ER getting 80 year old AMIL checked out. Thank be to God that no one was badly hurt or worse!

Hugs!

QUILT DELICIOUSNESS!!!! That's what THAT is! I just loved seeing them all! And I must confess, I had a naughty case of ENVY over the baby quilt by Barbara S. because those are all the colors in my bedroom. Sigh! The small purses? Darling! The vest with the vintage doilies REALLY caught my eye because it was a brilliant way to display loved items! And finally - Norma's jacket! How fun is THAT? (By the way, you are some LOVELY ladies! REALLY!) I just wish I had gotten to see YOUR rabbit quilt! Waaaaah!
