Remembering

Photos

August 31, 2009: It wasn't raining and cool like today, I'm sure. But I don't remember much about the temperature. I do remember that my body was threatening to give up, and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to continue the journey another day, another minute. The pain of the fibromyalgia was as bad as it has ever been and worse than usual. I was totally, squeezed out, dragged down, exhausted. In addition, I know now that I was terrified. Somewhere in that slush that was going on in my mind, I suppose I knew we were living the last days of our marriage, of Vann's illness--although I tried with every atom in me to deny it.

I distinctly remember the feeling of consciously forcing one foot in front of the other, taking literally one minute at a time, purposefully not thinking about tomorrow or how much longer this nightmare was going to continue.

To get me through those last days, I reminisced a lot. I went over the years and days of our lives together. Vann and I had some wonderful times. Laughter always lived with us. But we also went through some times that would have torn some couples apart, couples who didn't share the kind of strong love we had. We were bonded with the crazy glue of devotion. Even when we were hell-fire angry with each other, there was never any thought of going our separate ways. I really don't think anything could have separated us.

Many times Vann told me that he would never have survived the years after his divorce without me. It was a horrible time for both of us--but it was hell for him. And I know he helped me survive some hard times in my life as well. We always thought that because we were friends first, before we were lovers, that our bond was stronger.

Weeks, months after I survived that horrible time (and for a while last fall, I thought I wasn't going to), Vann's friends started coming forward and telling me what he had told them in his last days. They assured me that his thoughts were of me, just me. He made everyone promise to make sure I would be taken care of. He knew that when push came to push harder, I could always take care of myself. I'd done it before and could certainly do it again. But we had both been through the tough times. He didn't want any more of that for me, especially now with the physical issues I was dealing with. We had survived together, and together we'd stay, even after he was gone. He left complete instructions to "Make sure Suzie is taken care of," with everyone--from the preacher to the neighbors, his children, my children, his best friends, everyone.

That might not sound unusual to most of you. But to me, when I learned that my husband's only concern during the last days of his life, during the unimaginable pain and indignity that he went through, his all-consuming thoughts were that I would be completely cared for after he was gone, why that's just amazingly humbling to me.

I love you, Boo, my dear and cherished partner, my husband, my life. My friend and neighbor Melissa and I were talking of you just the other day. She reminded me that we would see you again soon. I can't wait, my love. I just can't wait. What a day of rejoicing that will be, huh?

Know that I am lifting you up in prayer this week. God bless you, He is your strength.

I love you so much, & you WILL make it through this milestone. Of that, I am 100% certain!

When we lose our loved ones there are spaces that can not be filled and that is so that we are remembered. The joy and the love that you shared with Vann has continued to give you strength and comfort over this past year. Even though it has been painfully difficult, you have found a way to enjoy the things life brings you. May you continue to find yourself surrounded by the love and laughter of your loving friends and family. Poignant touching post Susan. Thinking of you.

A year a lot of things happen in a year... Some of us grow up, get married and move out. Some of us get older but wiser and learn that they have more family than they ever thought. In this last 12 months I have lost 3 people I loved like family and miss everyday but I have also gained a new family by marriage. I've moved to a new state and grown a lot as a person and a soul. I may not have the chance to touch as may lives as Vann did but I know he touched mine. He made me realize everyone is a gift no matter how awkward they are. I'll mark this day with three candles and all the love I have for the loved ones of those who are in heaven watching us now.
I love you Susie and wish I could give you a huge hug right now.
Love Ash

Ghost in the Gallery

MonGhost

I know you've seen those photos that people take of ghostly images they've captured in their homes. Well here's mine. Do you see him? See his arms and his shoulders? And his little skinny head? And his big legs going down the stairs? Well of course it's a ghost. It's just as ghostly as those photos you see in The National Enquirer and on that tv show called "My Ghost Story."

I watched that very show one day last week when I wasn't feeling like rising from the couch. The particular episode featured three or four subjects who had experienced ghostly visitations, and each one had a photo showing his or her ghost. One was supposed to be a photo of an evil pig with horns and evil red eyes. I could only see a bunch of lines--no pig, no horns, no eyes, no red. Another was the reflection in a mirror of the face of a statue that had been stolen years before. Didn't see it. The other was supposed to be a human figure with no arms or legs. I saw a black blob.

I'm sure that if the producers of that show "My Ghost Story" happen upon this blog post, I'll get a call any day now to be featured on their show. I don't know exactly who my ghost is supposed to be. But there he is. I know it's not Vann. It doesn't look a thing like him. Below is another closer shot of my spook. I think you can see his legs better in this one. On the top stair there, see? One leg is bigger than the other--another sure sign it isn't Vann.

MonGhost2

Spooks aside, today is Show Off Your Cottage Monday over at Cielo's beautiful House in the Roses. That's the reason I was taking photos when I caught my ghost in the act of descending my stairs. Below are a few more shots, sans ghost, that I took in and around my foyer and stairwell.

Oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh! Did you say Boo! to "him"?

Your many framed pictures are lovely and add so much to your stair hall!

I have my grandma's treadle Singer machine in its cabinet and I made my first garment on it when I was 11 years old. I was in a 4-H club in suburban Chicago, of all places, and I made a skirt.

Just last week friends gave us an old Singer treadle cabinet without the sewing machine and, after a polishing, it's now in AMIL's living room. It looks wonderful and she's so pleased with it!

Be good to you, dear heart!

Hugs to the three of you!

Sunday Morning Coming Down

Well, here I am. It's a new Sunday morning and it's raining and cool. And strangely enough, that makes me feel better. I can feel autumn just around the corner and I rejoice in its imminent arrival. Hurray! Hip Hip! Come on autumn!

Fleal1

Friday I decided to get out of the house and peruse the nearby flea market. And I'm glad I did. I've been looking at this blue chest all summer. (Sorry that pic is a little slanted.) I thought it would be just right for the empty spot in my kitchen.

The chest started out with a price tag of $89. Well, I certainly thought that was too much, so I left it in the booth. A month or so later, I noticed it have been marked down to $42.50. Better, I thought, but still a little pricey. So Friday, the person who owns that booth had a sign posted that declared everything to be half price. So I wrestled that chest into my shopping buggy and made it mine for only $21.25.

The top of the chest lifts up and there's lots of storage space inside. I haven't decided what I'll store in it yet--probably superfluous dishes.

My as yet unmade chicken quilt will someday hang above it. But until then, "Dreams of Junk Food" will suffice. I made this wall hanging, oh, years ago, when I first joined my quilting bee, The Piecemakers. I joined just after the bee had organized a round robin challenge. I decided to take part, but because I had got in late, I did all the rounds myself.

Flea4

  Flea2

Flea3

I also found the fun set of gingham-handled flatware below for $4.

Flea6

...and the pretty piece below for $2.
Flea5

And that's all. I have a very hard week coming up. Not only will it be that dreaded anniversary, but I also have to attend to a matter that I really don't want to attend to. I appreciate all your messages of encouragement. They help so much. God bless you all, and may you have a peaceful sabbath.

Thursday Morning Fever

Dancin DOgs

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother,
you're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Feel the city breakin' and everybody shakin',
and we're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive.

I just haven't been able to get my mind into blogging these days. I apologize to my regular readers that I've had nothing to offer. I've been busy, it's true, with the dogs and the house and such. But that's not really the reason. There just seems to be nothing creative up there lately. A lot on my mind. Next week will bring the first anniversary of Vann's death. I just seem to be going through this time last year, day by day. On this day last year, he had only six days to live--things like that. And the person who has been causing trouble all year is still at it. I wonder if this is going to be my life from here on out.

But I have DANCING DOGS! And so many other blessings. Why can't I just take each day as it comes and be grateful and not let the aggravations get to me?

I have a hummingbird cake order and an order for a pan of brownies, so I best get to getting. And while I'm doing that, I'm going to give myself a good talking to and try to pull out of the funk I seem to be in. Vann would hate this. He wouldn't stand for it. (BTW, he wouldn't stand for the problems the bane of my life has been giving me either.) He was one to take each day as it comes, enjoy the joys and try to overcome the problems. That's what I want to do.

The little dancing dog...your newest addition, is a Heaven sent gift don't you think?? I am always amazed (but never surprised) how timely bits of comfort come to lift our spirits. Go through every moment of this week...feel it all as you work through this natural grieving and we will all be here when you want to come back. I've told you before how I admire and take inspiration from your strength and fortitude...perhaps this is the time to be vulnerable and contempletive as sorrowful as it is. Praying for you and knowing that Vann is looking down with pride at your courage to keep walking through this difficult journey.

I am sorry about the turmoil in your life. I ended a friendship several weeks ago that I felt was just "toxic" and I didn't need it in my life right now.
I also have a family member who has been so inconsiderate during my grieving for Amber. Life is just too short to waste my time thinking about people that don't really care. It is sad and I am hurt but I am better off without some people in my life.
Sendng you big HUGS!

First of all, about that lil' twit giving you trouble: I say you need to give him a good ignoring! If THAT doesn't work, tell him your friend Kai has a Comanche war club (I DO, by the way) and KNOWS how to USE it! Grrrrr! And don't you EVEN think you should apologize for not blogging enough. We who love you - and that's a LOT of us - understand what you are going through right now. Let yourself feel what you NEED to feel, indulge yourself just a bit extra until your heart is somewhat soothed, lean on all of us whenever you need us, and maybe - just maybe - join in the Sophie/Skippy dance marathon! LOVE YOU SOOOO MUCH!

Dear Susan, I miss your posts, but I understand. You are traveling on a rough road at the moment. Take those bumps as they can; the road smooths out a bit just ahead. I don't know why, but sometimes we seem "blessed" with a difficult person(s) (often a relative) in our lives. The Lord has his reasons and He says they are for our good. I'm reminding myself that these blessings are indeed blessings. I tend to think of blessings as fun and pleasant, but --sigh-- not always so. But always for our good.

And so, grieve and learn and grow as you go through the next few weeks. We're here for you, thinking of you and praying for you and waiting for you.

Blessings, blog friend,
Linda H

Hi sweetie,

I'm so glad that your doggie kids have learned to play happily and dance for your enjoyment. There are many good lessons on living in the moment to learn from our furry friends. Perhaps you need to dance when Sophie and Skipper dance?

The coming anniversary is on my mind, too, as that very date is when my mother died in 2004. You'll be in my heart and prayers between now and then.

As for the person(s) causing you headaches and heartaches, tell them they should be ashamed of themselves, that Vann wouldn't have tolerated their bad behavior, and they can get in touch with you again once they've grown up and can quit acting ugly. The choice is theirs but you're not playing their silly games for one more minute. Block their emails, use caller ID so you don't pick up their calls, and change the locks on the house so they cannot enter. They can contact someone in the family if and when they're over their selfish snit fit. So there!

Be gentle with yourself!

Big hugs!

Susan, you have such nice "ladies" giving you advice about the jackass who continues to give you heartaches. Sorry, I'm not a lady...just tell this jerk to...Oh,well,I guess you get my drift. Why oh why are there so many small, mean-spirited people in this world?

You have your babies and your friends and family. We love you.

As they say on the "Sopranos", "Forget abbata it". You are special and the jackass in your life is a a sad, attention-craving, loser.

A Star Has Fallen

Soapbox Cecil Whitmire, who led the transform- ation of downtown's Alabama Theatre from a struggling movie palace into a successful performing arts center, died Sunday after a brief illness. He was 74.

The Alabama Theatre, Birmingham, and all of Alabama, owe a debt of gratitutde to this good man for his tireless efforts on their part.

I will never forget trips to the Alabama as a teenager to see the latest hit movies. And later, my sister and I went frequently to see showings of "Gone With the Wind." Nothing like watching GWTW at the Alabama, unless it would be at Atlanta's Fox, which I've never had the opportunity to do.

Always before the movie, the Might Wurlitzer Organ would rise out of the stage floor with Cecil Whitmire sitting on the bench. He'd make that organ talk, entertaining the audience with many classics, and always with "Stars Fell on Alabama."

Mr. Whitmire began a three-decade love affair with the Alabama in 1976, when he moved to Birmingham from Knoxville to manage a hardware company.

In 1986, Mr. Whitmire led a grassroots effort to save the Alabama from bankruptcy and became president of Birmingham Landmarks Inc., which bought the Alabama, renovated it and turned it into a major performing arts venue for movies, concerts, theater, dance and private events.

"He was a legend in the historic theater circles," said George Culver, who now runs Birmingham Children's Theatre but once oversaw the historic Ritz Theatre in Talladega. He and Mr. Whitmire both were on the board of the League of Historic American Theatres.

"He was much beloved," Culver said. "He was such a kind, gentle man, and everyone knows how he almost single-handedly spearheaded saving one of the grand movie palaces in America."

Services have not been set, but there will be a memorial service at the Alabama, Hanks said.

In addition to his sister, Lynda Wright, Mr. Whitmire is survived by his mother, Margarette, who also lives in Corryton, Tennessee.

Some of the old theaters are so beautiful, with details the new theaters are sorely lacking! Your Alabama Theater is gorgeous! I grew up with the old Alabama HERE (named for the street where it sat) as well as the Majestic, the Metropolitan, & the River Oaks Theaters. The only one remaining is the River Oaks. It's gorgeous! They rarely show the popular films but instead focus on International & Indie films. I LOVE that theater! Wish we still had our other 3. GOOOOOD memories of all 3. Houston needed a Mr. Whitmire! Blessings on him!

Your Alabama reminds me so much of the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, TN, where I grew up! It also had a Mighty Wurlitzer that rose from the orchestra pit. I saw movies there when I was a child, and then it fell into disrepair. It has been restored and now hosts live events. I am always so pleased wen communities remember their treasures of yesterday. RIP Mr. Whitmire.

It reminds me of the Oriental Theater in Milwaukee. It was in walking distance of my condo when I was doing my urban living experiment. Does this organ rise up out of the stage?

Memphis has The Orpheum theater where the Mighty Wurlitzer organ rises out of the floor, too. It is a magestic theater in the style of The Alabama. How wonderful that The Alabama is still a showplace and active theater in many new ways. The pictures are fantastic.

Go in peace, Mr. Whitmire. You made a wonderful difference in the world!

Hugs to you, Susan.

Happy Pink Saturday

Two Here's another bargain treasure I found at Hobby Lobby the other day. This lovely shabby chic plate rack was half price and just perfect to hold three of my new rooster plates that Nicole found for me. The fourth one is on the shelf of red/pink transferware over my dining room window.

This is my Pink Saturday offering. Be sure to visit Beverly at How Sweet to Sound to see lots (and I do mean lots) more pink.

Inside and Out

Fri4

Earlier in the week, I hit the sale racks at Hobby Lobby. They had all their wall art 50% off. I got the Simplify sign above as well as the two signs shown below.

Fri1

Fri5

I got a couple of other bargains, but I'm not ready to photograph them. As I was playing with my new treasures and deciding where to put them yesterday, Jesse (grandson) showed up and announced that he was ready to cut down the holly bushes in front of the house. I have been wanting to get rid of them since 1996, when Vann and I moved into The Yellow House. They were just little things then. They had finally grown to an enormous height that no one could reach to prune.

So Jesse worked all afternoon getting them chopped down. I helped by dragging them across the street to where the city picks up trash. Well, I drug some of them; Jesse drug most of them. Even so, I was exhausted and soaking wet when we were finished. But Jesse was more tired and wet than I was.

All the hollies are down now, but I still have to kill the stumps, prepare the ground, have the brick pressure washed, and plant some other shrubs in their place. Anybody have any suggestions for good looking, low maintenance plants for landscaping the front of The Yellow House? I'm thinking maybe a combination of boxwoods and nandina.

House

See how the photo of the house looks a little foggy. That's not the focus. That's how humid it is outside. My camera lens fogged up. I think it rained all night; I woke up several times and heard thunder and rain.

Brush

Skipper is checking out the pile of holly bushes that now await the trash pickup truck.

***

Fri6
It has finally happened. Sophie has been dethroned.

***

Ooops! Forgot to add that I'm taking part in Cindy's Show and Tell Friday at My Romantic Home. Be sure to pay her a visit and see all the showing and telling.

Wow Susan, that's a lot of holly! I bet it feels good though now that it's finally gone. I would suggest hydrangea for in front of the house. I know you already have some, but I think they are great - low maintenance and those great big flowers just go on for ages!
Love Helen

I give a big two thumbs up to nandinas as we have them and they produce lovely color year around and red berries, too. They're no trouble at all. I'll add a vote for althea (your choice of white or red/purple blooms) and hydrangeas are lovely but I cannot grow them for some reason.

Love the peaceful kingdom photo and your new signs, and the lovely quilted wall hanging!

Thanks for the link to more fun!

You have been very busy these days but the house sure looks nice in the photos. I am sure that you will find the perfect plants to replace the holly.
Have a terrific weekend.

On 08/20/2010, Linda said ...

Whatever kind of shrubs you choose, make sure to look for those that will only grow so tall --whatever your limit is-- so you won't need to be always cutting them back. Nandina, for instance, can be a low growing variety, or not. I have fought the ones already in our yard when we moved here 8 yrs ago. I know that nandina stems should be cut at ground level, rather than topped, but that can be a chore requiring standing on one's head in the middle of a large bush. This week I lopped off 8 foot stems that were so heavy with foliage they were arching over into the path. This may be an older variety. There may be "new improved" varieties available. A nicely growing nandina has much to appreciate. My point is to check the varietal characteristics before plunking them into the planting site.

How nice to have a grandson able and willing to dig out one's holly bushes!

On 08/20/2010, Linda said ...

PS. Being the front of the house, evergreen foliage would be nice; might even trump flowers, if a choice must be made.

Great post - I'm thrilled I discovered your blog today. This is part of the problem with mainstream, national media trying to discuss events and people that they really don't know the details about, and don't bother to research. Not to mention their biases that you and some of the readers listed. And no question that there is a double standard between the NBA and just about every other sport, especially the NFL.

Mags and Wags

MaG 1 The mailbox contained my brand new copy of Love of Quilting this morning. I love that magazine (and not just because I have family ties to it). In fact, it's the only quilt magazine to which I own a subscription.

I always look forward to the autumn issue. I know it's going to contain lots of Halloween fun. And I wasn't disappointed. This issues has not only several Halloween quilt projects but also a cute, easy-to-stitch banner.

Mag 6

Mag 4

Mag 7

Mag 3

But not all the projects in this months LOQ are seasonal. Just look at this beautiful basket quilt.

MAG 2

And this sweet little Paper Doll Nap Time quilt, which has matching pillow shams.

Mag 5

There's more, much more. Kits are available for the quilts, which is a valuable feature when you're looking for the same fabric that was used in the model quilts.

Mag 8 I grabbed a copy of the newest Where Women Create magazine a couple of days ago when I made a run to Hobby Lobby.

I love this magazine. I get lots of creative ideas from it on ways to organize and decorate my sewing room--most of which I never put into effect. But another reason I love the magazine is that it shows me that I'm not the only one who has too much junk.

This issue has a feature on Amy Butler's studio, a wonderfully colorful space, so neat and organized. There are also features on Jo Packham, Susan Tuttle, wonderful young quilter Camille Roskelley, and many more.

Mag 9

As for the Wags (doggies), what does Sophie do every time I start blogging? Pesters me to take her out, of course. So, gotta go. I'll show the some treasures I found on Hobby Lobby's sale shelves as well a couple of flea market finds tomorrow.

Run, Shop, Cook

Red 2
"I never used to get in trouble all the time till Skipper came here." --Sophie

Skipper
"Ah, bite me." --Skipper

Soph & Skip
"OK!" --Sophie

This exchange took place after Skipper and Sophie chased neighbor Brad's tabby cat halfway across the neighborhood this morning, with me in hot pursuit. They both got a thump on the butt and a "Bad Dog!" Sophie swears it was all Skipper's fault. She said when she heard him utter those two little words, "Chase cat!" she just lost her mind and didn't know what she was doing. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

I have been scarce in Blogland this week, I know. What with dogs and friends and church and family and aches and pains, blogging has sort of taken a back seat.

I just finished making enough mashed potatoes to feed 25 youts (youth) and delivering it to the church. Before that, it was shopping at Wal-Mart, and before that it was chasing Sophie and Skipper through the neighborhood.

Eat-pray-love-movie

Last night, I went with some girlfriends for dinner at Macaroni Grill and then to see the movie "Eat, Pray, Love." I had the most wonderful chicken parmesan for dinner. The movie started out slowly I thought, but it got better. And by the end, I was crying. It's a chick movie, for sure. But most chicks should enjoy it.

We've had lots of good rain here this week. The lawns are looking green again. But the rain hasn't helped the heat much. Just made for more humidity. My glasses steam up every time I go outside.

Well, Frick and Frack (Soph and Skip) are whining to go outside. I guess they want me to prove that my glasses actually do fog up. I'll try to be a better blogger in the days ahead.
