The Room With the Rocking Horse

Rosie - 1

It took me two and a half days to get this block to the point that I can start the blanket stitching. I'm not as quick as I used to be.

Thanks to you who related your experiences with cataract surgery. I also got a bunch of comments about it on Facebook. Not one person has had anything negative to say, which makes me feel a lot better.

So as soon as I finish the current baby quilt, which I got barely started today, I'll call my eye doctor and have him set it up.

I also have to call my orthopedist (back doctor). After two and a half pain-free glorious days, the pain came back and has remained. The doctor said to calll him after two weeks if I wasn't better, so I'll call.

Happy Halloween weekend everyone. We're having our traditional Halloween chili supper tomorrow evening. Andy is coming and maybe Cait and Kathryn. Keeping it small.

What a sweet block fir Rosie's house! Honey, I have to say that none of us are as fast at anything as we used to be! Thank goodness we get things done eventually.

You'll be glad to have those cataracts gone so the world will be a brighter place once again.

Happy All Saint's Eve to you and everyone. Hope the family gathering is a joy.

Hugs!

I know you love Steven King’s books, I saw a great clip about his life, but when I went back to find it, no luck. I did find this clip about his life.

The Eyes Don't Have It

Maxresdefault

It has become apparent that my eyes are going to have to have cataract surgery if I'm to continue using them, especially for reading and sewing.

My eye doctor has been keeping watch on them for several years. When I had my eye exam in June, he said he thought it was time for surgery, although not critical yet. I asked him  about waiting another year, and he said it was fine to try that. I got new prescription glasses and settled in to stress about having EYE SURGERY!!!!

The condition has worsened since June. Some type is impossible for me to read. And if it becomes necessary to remove seams from a piece I'm working on, out comes the magnifying glass and bright lights. Even then, the process is very hard.

As fate would have it, however, I just found out yesterday that I need to make another baby quilt, and before Christmas, no less. Also I'm trying hard to finish my "Rosie's House" quilt for the quilt show in June.

I think what I'm going to do is make the baby quilt and then call my eye doctor to set up the surgery. If the surgeon can get to it relatively soon, I should still have enough time to finish the Dollhouse quilt.

As for the back procedure, it has now been two weeks, and I am disappointed. After two and half pain-free days directly following the procedure, the pain came back. So I have to call Dr. G and let him know. I'm thinking he'll have something else in his bag of tricks to try.

So that's the situation.

I had cataract surgery in July and I am pleased with the results. My vision is a lot sharper now, but the biggest difference was how much brighter everything is. I felt like I had been looking at the world through a dingy yellow veil. I was super sensitive to light for a couple of months, but things have settled down. The surgery doesn't hurt and you will not be uncomfortable afterwards. There is a complicated procedure with eyedrops you have to follow for a week afterwards. You should go for it. I don't think you will regret it. I hope others will chime in and tell you about their good results.

3 years ago I had cataract surgery on both eyes (a week apart) and had to follow the eye drop regimen for a month after each procedure. I was put to sleep with an IV medicine while the eye "block" was done so I didn't feel anything at all during the procedure. There was no pain afterwards either. Two days after each surgery I had to return for my operative eye to be checked.
DH and I were delighted with the results and do recommend you have sunglasses available to use. Colors are brighter and more vivid and that's a treat!

Did I send you some of the small scale quilt fabric years ago when you were first starting on Rossie's House? Check your email if you haven't done that recently.

Hugs!

I had both my eyes done in the last two months and I am embarrassed to say there is so much grime in places in my house that I could not see! Now I have so much deep cleaning to do! It will be exhausting but must be done, It is nice to really see clearly again and there was no pain whatsoever; only a little irritation the first day. Don't hesitate - you will be so happy.

You’ll be amazed how great your vision will be after cataract surgery. The sky was so blue after I had mine. A fog had been lifted! The surgery itself is not bad. Takes no time.

Back to the Future

House - 1

If you've been reading my blog for years and years, you might remember when I started Rosalie Quinlan's dollhouse quilt. I don't remember exactly what year it was, although I remember that Rosalie gave me permission to share the pattern with blog readers who wanted make the quilt, and we had a sew-along. I never finished my quilt, although some of the sew-alongers did.

Well, I've pulled out the project today and am determined to finish it in time for my guild's quilt show in June. I worked on it for a couple of hours today, as long as my back and Skipper would let me. I'm about halfway through the block making process. I figure if I work really hard, I can get it to Lena for quilting before Christmas. I'd really like to hand quilt it. Maybe.

I'm calling the quilt "Rosie's House." Rosalie's husband Neil called her Rosie. I became Facebook friends with this Australian couple and got to know and love them. They subsequently separated and divorced, and I lost touch with them both. Rosie lost her battle with breast cancer and passed away in 2017. I don't know what has become of Neil.

Anyway, that's my project for the foreseeable future.

Love this doll house as it's just too cute! I have some itty bitty quilt fabric that I can send to you for the sewing room's wall quilt - if you want me to.

Methinks I'd put the clothes line in the yard and make that room a library instead.

Enjoy making all if the rooms in this sweet house.

Ugly Quilt Challenges

Dog - 1

This is the donation cuddle quilt I made from my Brown Bag Challenge scraps. I really don't love it. I like the pattern a lot, but I'm just not a fan of the fabric scraps that were in my bag.

Dog - 1 (1)

I think I've learned a lesson though. A couple of years ago, I joined a Mystery Quilt Challenge. For that one, I chose my own fabrics and followed instructions that the challenge leader gave us. When the quilt was finished, I really didn't like it. I folded it away and have never quilted it. (See photo below.)

So what have I learned? Stop joining quilting challenges.

Above is the challenge quilt from 2019. Not sure what the design is supposed to show: bats, frogs, radioactivity symbols? Whatever, I think it's very unattractive.

Both of your quilts would be well loved by kids and I know they're perfectly made since you made them. The red/black Batty quilt with the bats and bat signals (aka radioactive warning signs!) would really delight some little boy!

Methinks we all have at least one quilt that we've made that doesn't live up to our expectations. I know I do.

Hugs!

Cautiously Optimistic

6a00d8341cbb0053ef010535c820f0970c-320wi
For the first morning in years, I woke up pain free this morning. After I got out of bed, I loaded the dishwasher, fed the animals, let Skipper out and back in--still on my feet and still no pain.

To be safe, I sat down with a cup of coffee and my book. But I got impatient. So much to do and feeling pretty good, so why not do a little more. So I did a few loads of laundry, including sheets and coverlet. I became aware of a tightness in my back where the pain usually is, and shortly thereafter, pain--but not awful pain as I would normally have after being on my feet not nearly that long. Maybe a 2 (on that 1-10 pain scale).

I immediately got off my feet and the little bit of pain I was feeling went away. Andy came in with an order of groceries she had picked up for me, and with lunch from KFC. She put the groceries away, we ate, and then we watched a movie. ("Joe Bell"  on Prime. I can't recommend it enough. Wonderful movie, but sad.)

Before Andy left, she brought in my coverlet which was hanging to dry on the back porch and put the sheets on my bed. What would I ever do without Andy and Jesse?

Glory hallelujah!! May all of your days be like today was. Very wise of you to sit when your back said to and am overjoyed the pain didn't get worse!!!!!!!!!

Be sure to smile and hug yourself as you consider all you were able to do.

Thank God for loving helpers like Andy and Jesse, too.

Hugs!

The Truant Blogger is Back

My nephew Jed reminded me that I've ignored my blog for quite a while. I just haven't felt real good. So much pain and fatigue. I've mostly just been doing what has to be done and that's all. Except reading. I have read a lot, and I need to update my reading list in the left sidebar. I have several books to add.

E29a9f-scaledThis isn't me, but this is how my procedure was done.

I had my most recent pain block procedure for my back this morning. Jesse went with me to be my driver. We had to be at the Medical Center at 6:15 a.m. Thank goodness it's only a short drive from my house, maybe 15 miles. But neither one of us was able to sleep last night, knowing we had to be up and about so early. We've been napping since we got back home.

The procedure went well. It was a steroid epidural injection under anesthesia. Also an injection of numbing medicine (lidocaine or something similar) for immediate relief. I'm told the steroid can take up to two weeks for longer lasting relief. I'm to check in with the doctor after that amount of time has passed to let him know if it works. If not, I'm not sure what's next.

My quilters guild meet this past Monday, in person for the first time in 14 months. I was prepared. I had put the binding on my donation cuddle quilt and sewn my president's block to give to our outgoing president. But when the time came, I just didn't feel like making the long drive (about 25 miles). I hear the meeting went very well. I hope I can be in attendance next month.

OK, back to my napping.
